I thought that GDL was a definite commit…I guess 97% is solid but it leaves a slight worry.
It would be great to get McKay, but didn’t he commit to UCLA? If he stopped having Colorado as a his backup school (in case UCLA kept him as a grayshirt offer), then maybe UCLA made him a regular scholarship offer instead of a grayshirt one? Or did Colorado get tired of being the backup school and offer someone else?
Circuit City’s ad in my local paper didn’t mention liquidation or bankruptcy at all. Instead, each page had a headline about how you could purchase the TVs, etc., and pay no interest for 3 years! 3 years no interest when the store won’t be around for 2 more months!

commits from recruits are impressive and uh is doing an excellent job this year compared to previous years under another coach. but, more important will be feb 5th after uh gets all the loi. if we lose any of the commits, will wish them the best and hope they remember uh recruiting them in future years. for those who sign, thank you very much for joining uh.
Best of luck to Tadd today! He’s already made an impression on the golf world outside of Hawaii, but today could be huge for him for so many reasons. So much pressure at such a young age…but he showed yesterday he can handle it!

It would be interesting to know if McKay’s communication to UH was today, after his trip to UCLA this weekend.
UCLA has about 21 commits, including 4 corners rated 34, 19, 41 and 43.
Last year, UCLA brought in safety prospects rated 2, 9, and 83, and corners 9 and 19.
In ’07, UCLA brought in safety prospect 47 and corner rated 10.
Bottom line, I don’t know how much UCLA needs McKay, even if he gets an unconditional, pure white offer. He’s looked at as a project.
By contrast, McKay sees the field next year at UH, and gives us a ton of versatility. He’s a perfect fit for us, and should excel in the WAC.

I was thinking that there are a lot of things that mute the fun at Stan Sheriff events.
The drop-in ads always drive me nuts.

I linked the latest recruiting new on McKay that I could find. He’s taking his official visit to UCLA this weekend.
My take on the situation is that UCLA is looking to grayshirt/redshirt him. If McKay wants to play right away, he has a better shot at UH. There is room at UCLA at safety for him, Westgate and Woods came in as safeties, but Westgate played last season as a LB and Woods may be moved to LB.

I don’t think the kids are worried about the coaching they would be getting at Hawaii. Mack is just going after far more talented players than JJ ever did. Many of our recruits are being courted by big time BCS programs. It’s easy to understand why they wouldn’t pledge to UH right away.

I do NOT think that concerns over coaching are costing commits, especially for DBs and other defensive players. I blame the distance for the mainland and the level of competition the WAC offers. UH is going after top-tier recruits, and top athletes want to play against the best and go to the NFL. The competition from the WAC is not near the competition from Pac-10 schools…if UH was in the Pac-10 you would see a huge jump in recruiting for these coaches.
That is why JD’s statement that UH won’t schedule top-tier BCS teams for road games (which would seem to rule out home-and-home deals too) surprised me. That sent a message that UH doesn’t want to challenge itself to play the best, while the schools UH is recruiting against play those types of teams. If that is UH’s plan, it would have been best to keep that plan unspoken.

Any one know why UH decided NOT to legally challenge the NCAA with its decision to take back the VB championship?
I still cannot understand how the NCAA can “create” a new rule/guideline some 3 months AFTER UH wins the championship and then make this ruling RETROACTIVE 2-3 years when Costas played with a “semi-pro” team without getting any pay or benefits. It’s like creating a law that it’s illegal to rob a bank and apply it to some one who robbed a bank 3 years ago.
How can UH ask any question(s) about a relationship with a professional team when the rule/guideline DID NOT EXIST when UH recruited Costas.
Am I missing something or misunderstood what happened? Won’t be the first time and certainly not the last.
I’m willing to take any kid who wants to be here and represent Hawai’i.
If commits change their minds that’s fine. I’d hate for them to be here on false pretenses. It wastes everyone’s time and effort.

How many football players have UCLA sent to the pros in the past 3 years?
With so many “underclassmen” declaring for this year’s NFL draft, wonder how this will affect the respective program’s APR? Recall reading, about 2 years ago, that the SEC had one of the lowest graduation rates with Auburn and Georgia below 50% yet I do not recall they being penalized like the WAC ( San Jose, UH, etc ). The NCAA should publicize all the 119 school’s APR annually for all to see.
Or do some schools have so many athletes not graduate within the given 5 years that their “average” is unacceptable. Of course, the NCAA has never been an institution where “one for all and all for one” philosophy applies. It’s been protect the “big name schools and screw the others”.
Yet, are not the NCAA “big wigs” also Presidents of schools? Who pays their salaries, travel expenses, etc.? Point being why does the NCAA need so much $$$?

I’m still upset about the men’s volleyball title being taken away. It appears to me that other schools have appealed that sort of thing (including the following year!) and they won…but UH didn’t seem to challenge the ruling very hard and didn’t present the case effectively enough.
There are certain law firms that represent schools all the time in appeals to the NCAA. Those firms contain many people who recently left the NCAA administration…which helps a lot I’m sure. Most schools use those law firms, but I’m not sure if UH did.
Was your favorite AD in charge at UH at the time? If so, that is all the answer you need as to why UH didn’t pursue their avenues of appeal stronger.

From what I now understand, UH was so happy not to have been found guilty of having “lack of institutional control,” it basically threw Costas under the bus. Again, Costas didn’t take any money. He didn’t have an agent. He justs played on a team that had some players who were paid. But where he played, there are no pure amateur teams. And the protest was filed after his career ended, which was a year after the 2002 title.
What also was strange was BYU was found to have committed similar violations. While its coach lost his job, BYU kept is national title.
At least the MPSF allowed Costas’ league records to stand.

The one thing that troubles me about APR is that it doesn’t affect the one-and-done folks in basketball. I mean, Duke, North Carolina, Ohio State and Texas could have been stripped of a lot of scholies if the football rule was applied to basketball.

You really seem to be into conspiracy theories regarding the NCAA, but the APR is purely a mathematical formula and nobody is sneaking with the APR. I do look forward to the completion of that NCAA website that will have the APR scores for every sport for every University.
The simple answer for why other schools avoid APR hits:
1. BCS conference schools spend a LOT of money on academic tutoring, advisors, and academic facilities for their athletes. That is actually a recruiting tool also. The articles comparing the spending on academic resources for athletes showed a *huge* gap between the big-budget schools and most non-BCS conference schools.
2. Many schools have “athlete-friendly” majors and any athlete struggling with academics are “encouraged” to switch to those majors and take “athlete-friendly” classes. A classic example of this is Michigan–remember that series of articles I posted last year that showed how their athletes focused on one particular major and how their “independent study” was pretty much an automatic “A” class in which they did little to no work?
3. Having some athletes leave early doesn’t hurt that badly if the rest of the athletes are making adequate academic progress. The APR standard doesn’t require everyone to graduate, if some hits are taken a school can still safely be above the standard. Plus, some athletes who leave early take summer school (like Vince Young) and get their degrees.

Wow, it looks like China’s BYD battery manufacturer has a battery for electric cars coming out this year that will well surpass the performance of the batteries on the market now. I do not disagree with #137…sadly, that was a UH decision according to what ST indicated. Kind of hard for UH to appeal their own decision to not appeal.
Okay, now the timeline makes sense…it was not back in 1995 (I got confused by #127), I had thought that it wasn’t that long ago. I just looked up several articles on the issue and it is clear that HF was in charge then…and the reports said that he was in charge of UH’s appeal process.

I am not after a consipiracy theory, but I am after fairness/equality for all schools when a certain rule is applied.
Certain schools are getting around or finding a way to get around the rule, like Michigan, by cheating the student out of a quality education. This means that the athletic department is only concerned about the student’s abilities/talent on the field and not the student himself. a quick check shows that seven ucla football players were drafted in the past three years and six of the seven were on teams this year. this does not count the total number of nfl players.
uh on the other hand had six drafted and only four remain on active rosters.

For basketball teams with the small roster size, you’d have a ton of schools (UH included) with huge APR swings year-by-year. The roster sizes of both sports are not really comparable, and the rules aren’t consistent for entering the draft for both sports…so, you *cannot* apply the same rule to both sports. That is a simple fact–as long as the early entry rules differ and the roster sizes are so different, the APR rules have to differ. UH would also have been hurt by English leaving early and some other situations with basketball if the APR rules were stricter.
I do not disagree with you that what Michigan did was shameful, and I’ve posted other articles about how athletes “cluster” in majors at many other schools too. However, that isn’t violating the APR rules, since they are getting grades in classes that count towards their degree.

I don’t follow Lewis so I don’t know. But I do remember that BYU got their title back the year after UH lost theirs.
The NCAA used to allow high school basketball players to go straight to the NBA (Kobe, Garnett, LeBron, etc.). Now, they require those players to play in the NCAA (or Europe) for a year before they can enter the NBA draft. Since they made that rule, can they penalize the school the athlete attends when he leaves for the draft after 1 year?

sad thing about the basketball team is that the players are being labeled as lazy or are just standing around or having a poor attitude.
i don’t know about you guys but, i don’t blame the players as they are being unjustifiably labeled. i tell you, it is the system that they are running or the abscence thereof. we seem to have no clue as to how to attack a basic 2-3 zone.
true we lack a solid pg, true we are really missing a 2 guard, and a 3 who can consistently take the outside shot. can’t do anything about that this year.

What’s at stake
The NCAA ruled that UH committed a “secondary violation” for using an ineligible player during the 2002 men’s volleyball season. Here is what is expected to happen:
UH will relinquish 2002 national championship and trophy.
UH will pay fine of $5,000 to NCAA.
UH will not forfeit regular-season matches during player’s four-season career.
With the exception of the player, UH players will be allowed to keep their championship rings.
Player must return all of his NCAA awards.
Player will not be asked to repay scholarship money.
The NCAA violation
The NCAA bylaw under which the University of Hawai’i was found to be in violation involved Article 12 regarding amateurism. Under Article 12.2.3.2, competition with professionals, the rule was revised and became effective in August 2002, after UH had won the NCAA men’s volleyball title.
Here is the rule before August 2002 and its revision:

An individual shall not be eligible for intercollegiate athletics in a sport if the individual ever participated on a team and knew (or had reason to know) that the team was a professional team in that sport. …

The NCAA yesterday stripped the University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team of its 2002 national championship because it used a player with professional experience, school officials announced.
“This is a sad day,” UH men’s volleyball coach Mike Wilton said.
UH and NCAA officials refused to publicly name the player, but Costas Theocharidis, a four-time All-America outside hitter who finished his UH career in April, told The Advertiser last month he was the target of the NCAA investigation. Theocharidis did not return messages left on his cellular telephone yesterday.
The NCAA ruled that Theocharidis, who was raised in Greece, played in 22 matches for a professional team in Europe before enrolling at UH in August 1999. Although UH officials said the accused player did not receive a salary or sign a contract, a player forfeits his amateur status

No mater how you slice it, I think the NCAA was right on this call by taking away the Volleyball championship away from the UH. It looks like a straight forward decision to me where the amateur rules prior to 2002 mandates that an amateur can’t play on a professional team in that sport. And Costas did. If I were the UH I would have looked at Costas’ application where he’s required to list all outside sport’s clubs and affiliations etc., and see if there was any intent to defraud, cheat, and circumvent the rules on Costas part-and if there wasn’t then all the finger pointing should be towards the athletic dept, compliance people or whom ever at the UH that processes these applications.

I heard tons of interviews and read articles and stories about how columnists and talk show hosts talk about how the NCAA is like a cesspool filled with cheaters, namely at all the big time schools and conferences. Basketball is the worst. Article after article I’ve read where some of these star athletes are getting paid, athletes families being taken care of, professors being bribed-everything. If your familar with the Reggie Bush case that’s a prime example of the NCAA not enforcing the rules. And you want to know why? It all comes down to the monies, the tv revenues. And less about integrity, but don’t expect the NCAA to bring down the cash cows.

I had heard that the NCAA took away UH’s volleyball title because it wanted to crack down on schools being lax in their due diligence with non-US players who may have played with professionals in their home country playing in NCAA sports (specifically basketball), so they took away UH’s volleyball title for the rules violation because it was a minor non-revenue sport (few schools field men’s volleyball teams). It made schools do their due diligence to ensure non-US players were eligible in all sports because no one would want to risk losing an NCAA title.

Remember, Mack looked up at the crowd by the tunnel after the ND game as he went off the field. Our coach has class and holds his head high. With guyz like Funaki on our team, Hawaii has excellent role models and a excellent future. And I gotta remind myself, this was Mack’s first year with some key coaches in their first yeat at D1. It takes time to get all the parts working well together, getting the most out of each other.

Re recruits- sometimes the kids can get “spoiled” a little early- thinking they are being wooed by colleges a la Jerry McGuire characters.
I like what Coach Jones did- finding good boys who were humbled by circumstances that made them hungry to prove themselves truly good and appreciative that a school would give them am opportunity for “redemption” and a second chance to be successful.
These athletes were already digging deep in the playbook of character and “clinging to the hem of the robe” of the Lord. They had something to prove to themselves, their families and society. And they did, and they are loved and successful today.

Hey! I ran into Aaron Bain late last night at Pearl Kai 24 HR Fitness.
He asked he if I was using a machine and I had to do a double take to make sure it was him, but yeah, I just thanked him for all he did this year despite the over all struggles the offense had, he was real adamant to thank those that kept coming to the stadium this year despite the record and hopes nothing but the best for next year’s team.
He mentioned that he’d be graduating in the spring (I think OR he’d continue his schooling beyond that).

Curveball ~ Sac was actually very comfortable at 35…long as I stayed inside da house with my fireplace blazing! Used to burn a cord of wood we cut from up there past your place in the Sierra’s.
Whenever we went up to cut our own Christmas tree down, we’d go visit an old friend my grandkids had nicknamed, “Grizzy Adams.” He lived up past Auburn on the way to Grass Valley. They loved to spend the day snow sledding out back of his spread. That was before they discovered Boreal.
We all learned about Dr. King in school, but I understood the true scope of his influence as I got older.
We still hear about discrimination in our country and for us that live in Hawaii, it’s hard to fathom and understand.
Personally and honestly speaking, I cannot even begin to understand how some one that lived during the time of Dr. King could just “turn the other cheek”. I have yet to even come close to trying to attain those kinds of morals.
Dr. King is BY FAR a better man than I am and I think we all know and believe that he is a better man amongst most men and women. The world would benefit with more “Dr. Kings” in positions of power in government, business, medicine, etc…

Walking the hills of Maunawili this morning, I could not help but drift back to my posts last night about the UH’s VB championship taken away from the NCAA.
Since there was no negligence involved it taking away what the NCAA did, there should be NO statute of limitations applicable to this situation. Similar to Congress passing a law and decades can go by before it is challenged in the judicial system and then revised by Congress. If I am correct, UH can re-open its appeal at any time. Correct or am I blowing smoke up my ass?
Now, what is the process and who can file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) with the NCAA to reveal WHO filed the complaint against UH? I would like to see any documents filed including transcripts/notes of phone conversations between the person(s) and NCAA and how the NCAA decided on actions to be taken against UH inlcuding who voted for and against the penalties. I don’t believe this is considered “privileged” information.
Also, I would like to see the process, documents, logic, and votes by NCAA members on why BYU was able to keep its championship and trophy in tact.

the “original” NCAA language of participation on a “pro-team” does not match the team Costas played on – it was a team with 2 or 3 professionals players, NOT a professional team.
current rule is vague and does not really address specifics and, IMHO, would be very easy to tear apart by a half decent attorney.
and, what about all the U.S. college players who play against a team with pros on their team or opponents team (pick up basket ball game or charity game)? does this not happen all the time? or, is the NCAA rule discrimnatory only against non-U.S.A. players?
I am amazed that “lack of institutional control” included steps not taken by a school for something that did not exist 5 years before the complaint was filed and deemed necessary by the NCAA to revise the “rule” and retroactive it 5 years. If a school blantantly abused a rule, then it’s a different story.
As for Reggie Bush, the NCAA already made an excuse for not pursuing their investigation because it may jeapordize the criminal investigtion. I don’t see the NCAA making any outward effort to bring its side to a close. Or, is it like the civil case must wait until the criminal case is completed (like OJ Simpson ). If the NCAA continues to keep its track record of “favoring” the big name schools, is there a cause to fiel a Federal discrmination suit against the NCAA? A discrimination suit, I was told, once filed, opens that entity to any and all issues that the prosecutor may find interesting and chose to investigate. That’s why companies do not like Federal discrimination actions because it can open a whole can of worms.

I share the same feelings you do about that incident as well as many other things regarding the NCAA.
Too many times we have seen stories about larger instituations getting a slap on the wrist and TOO MANY TIMES have I heard stories from those that attend those same universities that share the same suspecions.

The more and more I read the blog over the last couple of days about UH’s 2002 National Championship in Men’s Volleyball, the more I believe that had Jim Donovan been in charge back then, he would have gone down swinging.
Jim Donovan would have not laid back and let the NCAA easily take away what was rightfully ours!
A-House ~ What is your intention in bringing the matter to the fore? Do you feel that we will gain anything from appealing the ruling now that the water has flowed over the washed out VB bridge?
…and A-house do you honestly think we can get these lunk heads to establish a new set of rules that will apply to all of the Sports teams?
If that were possible, then I say the Reggie Bush case is just one of the ‘shadow’ cases that should be re-opened and ruled on as harshly as they did our insignificant little VB tantrum that some ‘anon’ pinhead threw.

Kazz ~ No, and I’m not quite sure what the big gun slinger from Hilo would do. If he comes in like “Gun Bangley” and opens up with both barrels blazing…it ain’t gonna pretty! (But, as usual, it will be very entertaining).

I, for one, would like to see the NCAA rescind its position that cost UH the men’s VB national championship and make it “right” for all to witness because I truly believe that’s the right thing to do.
I do not know what it will take, but I hope that Jim Donovan will take a very hard look, including consulting with attorneys( not UH General Counsel’s office ), about the pros and cons of reopening this matter. This would include an apology from the NCAA that they erred and state why BYU got to keep “everything” versus UH losing nearly everything.
And, why did UH have to pay a $5,000 fine? Did the NCAA really need the cash?
I know that Jim D has many things on his plate, but I will discuss this when I meet him again and seek his opinion. And, I agree with Kazz, that Jim D would have done a much better job to insure that Hawaii kept its national championship in tact.
I believe this is very important for Hawaii. Maybe not so important to UCLA, but their students, IMHO, could give a rat’s ass about the 11 or 12 national championships in VB – only thing that counts for them is football and basketball. As some of the students said of their attendance at the 1995 VB championship games at Pauly Pavillion, “we came only because they no like make ass that more Hawaii fans showed up versus UCLA fans/students.”
Can our “house” attorneys respond with their positions on this matter so we can also review other opinions and why?
CHANGE, if President-Elect Obama can ask the nation to seek change, why can’t I? Does this mean that change will occur? There is great joy in this for me because I personally knew his Dad and as peers attending UH and dorming at Atherton YMCA. My Hawaiian pride is showing and I hope it flows from each and every resident of Hawaii. As it was said in the First Olympics by Mrs. Bogardus, “our boys”.
