Making the grade

Roll the credits for academic advisers Sara Nunes-Atabaki and Trina Kudiacek, and tutors Courtney Tsumoto and Amber Tyndzik.
Thirty-four Warriors had a 3.0  or better GPA during the fall semester, led by Inoke Funaki’s straight As.

* * *

The Warriors will open their offseason conditioning program Tuesday, although nearly all of the players already have started some form of training.

* * *

Long Beach Poly safety Stanjarius McKay, who aspires to have a career in the medical field, is down to UCLA and UH.

* * *

Running back Jack Sula, who gave a verbal commitment to UH, still needs to complete some academic requirements. He is expected to join the Warriors in May.

* * *

Lineman Jesse Williams is not enrolled at UH this semester, which began last week. But there still is a possibility he will be able to attend classes — and participate in spring ball — when the NCAA Clearinghouse rules on whether some of the classes he took in Australia meet NCAA standards.

Coach Mack is going to the Grand Slam.
He said he and his grandson are going to the Sony to cheer on Tadd.

  8. AlaWaiPipeLayer January 18, 2009 10:06 am

Woke up and said a prayer for Tadd. Hope you have a lousy day at the range again. May your drives fly long and true. May your balls find perfect lies. May your irons be sweet and find every pin. May your putts roll true and balls find the bottom of the cup. May you find a calm and peace internally to enjoy and savor each moment. Most importantly don’t forget to breathe! Regardless, you make everyone proud, Tadd. You go Tadd!

PS: I think he’ll need to post a 65 to win.

I use to go and watch golf when I was younger, but as the legs get older, its more fun to golf and watch so that is what I will be doing today and catch the recap on Tad.

  20. Momo January 18, 2009 10:47 am

Some how, my post got sent before I ended it . As for the BB team I can see a long season ahead as our team can’t shoot and they are not playing as a unit as youcan see that they are trying to run plays, but it is not smooth. They need to learn how to put the ball in the basket.

  21. jm2375 January 18, 2009 10:48 am

why is there a circuit city ad in the paper today?

  22. Stephen Tsai January 18, 2009 10:53 am

    Justin:
    That’s what he told UH.
Anyway, I hear GDL is the key to the Poly recruiting. He’s at “97 percent” committed to UH.

Okay… it looks like Da Kid is gonna go on a tear here…

  30. Da Punchbowl Kid January 18, 2009 11:15 am

    Howzit Justin!
I don’t know anything about him, but that’s good info. LB Poly sure has a lot of recruits.

  31. Garret January 18, 2009 11:16 am

I thought that GDL was a definite commit…I guess 97% is solid but it leaves a slight worry.

It would be great to get McKay, but didn’t he commit to UCLA? If he stopped having Colorado as a his backup school (in case UCLA kept him as a grayshirt offer), then maybe UCLA made him a regular scholarship offer instead of a grayshirt one? Or did Colorado get tired of being the backup school and offer someone else?

  32. Garret January 18, 2009 11:17 am

Circuit City’s ad in my local paper didn’t mention liquidation or bankruptcy at all. Instead, each page had a headline about how you could purchase the TVs, etc., and pay no interest for 3 years! 3 years no interest when the store won’t be around for 2 more months!

  33. Garret January 18, 2009 11:19 am

Shane Victorino had some advice for the Eagles.

Teams that win championships often benefit from players who raise their level of play on the big postseason stage. Shane Victorino did that with a pair of huge home runs during the Phils’ postseason run.

“Every play counts, that’s what I’d tell them,” said Victorino, a former slot back who turned down a full scholarship to the University of Hawaii to pursue a baseball career. “The pressure gets bigger as you move along in the playoffs, but every step, every snap still counts. You can’t take a snap off.”

  34. whitey January 18, 2009 11:19 am

Good morning Tsaikos. A spectacular day in Hawaii Nei. Best to Tadd and the Cardinals. Thank yous to the academic advisors and turors for the warriors and congrats to Inoki for all A’s.

  35. Garret January 18, 2009 11:21 am

It is nice that the NCAA will have an APR report out for *coaches*, not just schools. It will be on a website that all fans and schools can look at and will be for all sports, not just football.

The NCAA will be keeping score on how seriously a coach takes graduation.

The organization said Saturday it will move ahead with plans to create an Academic Progress Report for coaches, one that could be posted on the Internet for all to see by summer of 2010.

“The point is to shine some light on coaches’ performances and to bring some accountability to it,” said Hartford University president Walt Harrison, chairman of the NCAA’s Committee on Academic Performance.

Schools looking for a new head coach might be more reluctant to hire someone near the bottom of the rankings.

“It could have a modest influence,” Penn State president Graham Spanier said. “Realistically, wins and losses weigh most heavily on a coach’s reputation.”

Another time-consuming part of the planning process will be compiling a list of all coaches in all sports — something the NCAA doesn’t have. Harrison’s committee hopes to present a prototype version of the coaches’ APR Web page to the NCAA later this year.

  36. Garret January 18, 2009 11:23 am

Congratulations to the Warriors and to their academic advisors! Special shout out to Inoke for posting a 4.0 this semester! That is yet another way that he’s shown leadership.

  37. whitey January 18, 2009 11:24 am

commits from recruits are impressive and uh is doing an excellent job this year compared to previous years under another coach. but, more important will be feb 5th after uh gets all the loi. if we lose any of the commits, will wish them the best and hope they remember uh recruiting them in future years. for those who sign, thank you very much for joining uh.

  38. Garret January 18, 2009 11:24 am

Best of luck to Tadd today! He’s already made an impression on the golf world outside of Hawaii, but today could be huge for him for so many reasons. So much pressure at such a young age…but he showed yesterday he can handle it!

    Hi, DPK,

It’s good, 2009 has shown a little improvement for me. How about you?

  44. lava January 18, 2009 11:45 am

It would be interesting to know if McKay’s communication to UH was today, after his trip to UCLA this weekend.

    UCLA has about 21 commits, including 4 corners rated 34, 19, 41 and 43.

Last year, UCLA brought in safety prospects rated 2, 9, and 83, and corners 9 and 19.

In ’07, UCLA brought in safety prospect 47 and corner rated 10.

Bottom line, I don’t know how much UCLA needs McKay, even if he gets an unconditional, pure white offer. He’s looked at as a project.

By contrast, McKay sees the field next year at UH, and gives us a ton of versatility. He’s a perfect fit for us, and should excel in the WAC.

  45. Da Punchbowl Kid January 18, 2009 11:48 am

    So far so good, Ted!

  46. FloridaTed January 18, 2009 11:49 am

    Goooooooooo Tad!

I was thinking that there are a lot of things that mute the fun at Stan Sheriff events.
The drop-in ads always drive me nuts.
But not so much as when it’s announced: “Western Athletic Conference baseketball. Stan Sheriff Center.”
And that’s during a timeout in the middle of the second half.
It’s like: Wow, I wondered where I was.
I think they could learn a lot from Vin Scully and Al Michaels. Sometimes the p.a. guy needs to turn over the sound to the fans.

  62. AlaWaiPipeLayer January 18, 2009 1:44 pm

#3 Tadd gets it to 9’…two put par. Gotta get the putter going. He’s live on TV now.

  63. Stephen Tsai January 18, 2009 1:50 pm

It’s always weird to see Steve Tasker on the tube.
I once interviewed him too long at the Pro Bowl. He missed the team bus back to the hotel. So I had to give him a ride. Nice guy.
Then he gets eaten up by Deion Sanders in the game.

I linked the latest recruiting new on McKay that I could find. He’s taking his official visit to UCLA this weekend.

My take on the situation is that UCLA is looking to grayshirt/redshirt him. If McKay wants to play right away, he has a better shot at UH. There is room at UCLA at safety for him, Westgate and Woods came in as safeties, but Westgate played last season as a LB and Woods may be moved to LB.

  68. Da Punchbowl Kid January 18, 2009 2:36 pm

  77. Jason January 18, 2009 2:54 pm

4.0 is hard for anyone, especially an athlete. I think I’ve only had one 4.0 semester in college. Kudos to all those athletes who are doing well in the classroom. 🙂

  78. Jason January 18, 2009 2:55 pm

And kudos to the advisers and tutors, too. That ain’t easy as well. 😛

    Jason – senioritis… nuff said.

  80. Garret January 18, 2009 3:11 pm

    McKay update.

Just talked to a Poly coach and he said Tepa is at Oregon. He also said Stan McKay just committed to UCLA so I’m trying to confirm. They must have scrapped the grey shirt idea.

  81. Jason January 18, 2009 3:11 pm

Wow, you mean senioritis kicked in after my third semester in college? 😉

My next best semester actually was last semester. 😛

  82. Garret January 18, 2009 3:11 pm

    Another article about McKay.

I was able to speak to a few sources today and was told safety Stanjarivus McKay of Long Beach Poly was having a great time and there was a lot of belief he would commit before he leaves campus Sunday. He was set to meet with coach Rick Neuheisel after the basketball game.
I am not sure whether it would be a gray-shirt situation with him coming to school in January 2010 or coming in time for the 2009 season.

  83. Garret January 18, 2009 3:14 pm

Recruiting tidbit about another UH commit that was posted on SH.

Interesting that link mentions sighting of Kahuku safety & also UH prospect Aulola Tonga on-campus at UCLA this weekend for his recruiting trip. Let’s hope that Aulola doesn’t commit to UCLA after this weekend.

Although Aulola was originally supposed to visit UH next weekend, it looks like the U-Dub Huskies are now scheduled for next weekend instead. Hmmm…

  84. Garret January 18, 2009 3:15 pm

There are so many rumors around about Manti Teo.

We begin this week with the scorecard of Hawaii’s top recruit and the nation’s highest rated linebacker, Manti Te’o. A scorecard is needed because of all the “inside sources” who know exactly what Te’o is going to do when it is time for him to announce his college decision.

“He is definitely going to BYU.”

“That would be true, if he were not going to USC.”

  93. Ralph January 18, 2009 4:02 pm

you would think a DB would want to come to UH because we lose all of the starters including nickelback….only JP Davis played any significant time. maybe there is concern with the coaching they would be getting at UH

  94. Justin January 18, 2009 4:23 pm

    Ralph,
I don’t think the kids are worried about the coaching they would be getting at Hawaii. Mack is just going after far more talented players than JJ ever did. Many of our recruits are being courted by big time BCS programs. It’s easy to understand why they wouldn’t pledge to UH right away.

  95. bstunna2002 January 18, 2009 4:45 pm

Hey ST was the news on Stan McKay post UCLA visit? I wonder what happened to the Colorado offer. Wouldn’t it be great if all 3 LB Poly kids bought Jerseys while they were down here and on signing day their myspace pages have a pic of all three wearing a Warrior Jersey. Come on GDL be the closer for us here imagine 3 of the top d players in Cali’s most competitive division all donning warrior uni’s who would have ever thought oh and Mack get P. King a schollie boy is a baller.

  96. jm2375 January 18, 2009 5:06 pm

off topic…. Congrats to my co-workers for finishing the HURT 100 race – 1 finished the 100 mile race and 2 finished the 100K.

  97. Garret January 18, 2009 5:16 pm

    bstunna2002,

I think that ST’s post was written before McKay’s official visit to UCLA was over.

  98. Garret January 18, 2009 5:23 pm

    Ralph,

I do NOT think that concerns over coaching are costing commits, especially for DBs and other defensive players. I blame the distance for the mainland and the level of competition the WAC offers. UH is going after top-tier recruits, and top athletes want to play against the best and go to the NFL. The competition from the WAC is not near the competition from Pac-10 schools…if UH was in the Pac-10 you would see a huge jump in recruiting for these coaches.

That is why JD’s statement that UH won’t schedule top-tier BCS teams for road games (which would seem to rule out home-and-home deals too) surprised me. That sent a message that UH doesn’t want to challenge itself to play the best, while the schools UH is recruiting against play those types of teams. If that is UH’s plan, it would have been best to keep that plan unspoken.

  99. XxFaithxX January 18, 2009 5:29 pm

    STEELERS!!!!!!!

Man o man, 2 great playoff games!!

no worry my friend. re my friend marilyn, we all get different experiences and those experiences shape our opinions of people. when the women’s bb team leader and its program helps bring down
Warrior Nation, whether they call themselves Rainbows or not, then that is affecting Warrior Nation, no ifs ands or buts.

and I wish all the talk about the commits would wait until NLOI day, then we can see for ourselves whats the haps. I like jump right in too, but the wize thing to do is to hold my piece.

dare you go Momo, I’m holding my piece. 😀

Mr. Funaki, a special “well-done” for you! Straight A’s while training/playing a sport is simply outstanding!!

And, a special thanks to the coaching staff for putting so much emphasis on academics. This is also reflective of new recruits to the program.

Any one know why UH decided NOT to legally challenge the NCAA with its decision to take back the VB championship?

I still cannot understand how the NCAA can “create” a new rule/guideline some 3 months AFTER UH wins the championship and then make this ruling RETROACTIVE 2-3 years when Costas played with a “semi-pro” team without getting any pay or benefits. It’s like creating a law that it’s illegal to rob a bank and apply it to some one who robbed a bank 3 years ago.

How can UH ask any question(s) about a relationship with a professional team when the rule/guideline DID NOT EXIST when UH recruited Costas.

Am I missing something or misunderstood what happened? Won’t be the first time and certainly not the last.

  119. addahknowjoe January 18, 2009 8:52 pm

How many football players have UCLA sent to the pros in the past 3 years?

With so many “underclassmen” declaring for this year’s NFL draft, wonder how this will affect the respective program’s APR? Recall reading, about 2 years ago, that the SEC had one of the lowest graduation rates with Auburn and Georgia below 50% yet I do not recall they being penalized like the WAC ( San Jose, UH, etc ). The NCAA should publicize all the 119 school’s APR annually for all to see.

Or do some schools have so many athletes not graduate within the given 5 years that their “average” is unacceptable. Of course, the NCAA has never been an institution where “one for all and all for one” philosophy applies. It’s been protect the “big name schools and screw the others”.

Yet, are not the NCAA “big wigs” also Presidents of schools? Who pays their salaries, travel expenses, etc.? Point being why does the NCAA need so much $$$?

  123. Garret January 18, 2009 9:02 pm

    A-House,

I’m still upset about the men’s volleyball title being taken away. It appears to me that other schools have appealed that sort of thing (including the following year!) and they won…but UH didn’t seem to challenge the ruling very hard and didn’t present the case effectively enough.

There are certain law firms that represent schools all the time in appeals to the NCAA. Those firms contain many people who recently left the NCAA administration…which helps a lot I’m sure. Most schools use those law firms, but I’m not sure if UH did.

Was your favorite AD in charge at UH at the time? If so, that is all the answer you need as to why UH didn’t pursue their avenues of appeal stronger.

  124. Stephen Tsai January 18, 2009 9:03 pm

    A-House:
From what I now understand, UH was so happy not to have been found guilty of having “lack of institutional control,” it basically threw Costas under the bus. Again, Costas didn’t take any money. He didn’t have an agent. He justs played on a team that had some players who were paid. But where he played, there are no pure amateur teams. And the protest was filed after his career ended, which was a year after the 2002 title.
What also was strange was BYU was found to have committed similar violations. While its coach lost his job, BYU kept is national title.
At least the MPSF allowed Costas’ league records to stand.

  125. whitey January 18, 2009 9:04 pm

colonel, i can see that there is some fire tonight and can feel the heat from here. hahahahaahaaaaa

  126. Stephen Tsai January 18, 2009 9:04 pm

The one thing that troubles me about APR is that it doesn’t affect the one-and-done folks in basketball. I mean, Duke, North Carolina, Ohio State and Texas could have been stripped of a lot of scholies if the football rule was applied to basketball.

  127. A-House January 18, 2009 9:08 pm

    OK, you attorneys out there.

Is there a “statute of limitations” for NCAA rulings or decisions? If not, I hope Jim D takes up the cause to restore what rightfully belongs to UH.

Can UH, now, challenge the NCAA decision to take away the VB championship?

whitey: maybe that asst AD forgot everything he/she learned in law school and is one who does not like to make waves ( no moral courage ).

Back in 1995, there was no General Counsel’s office like there is today. But, I have vey little confidence in their abilities in their decisions – like the Sugar Bowl fiasco.

  128. Dara January 18, 2009 9:10 pm

Thank you, Mr. Tsai and you Tsaikos…for spreading the word about Gido. When I called Gina on Friday morning, she was so distraught, she couldn’t talk. Thanks again…you are an amazing bunch. Cheers to the final 2 NFL games of the season (Boooo! Seven months is too long)!!!

  129. Garret January 18, 2009 9:12 pm

    A-House,

You really seem to be into conspiracy theories regarding the NCAA, but the APR is purely a mathematical formula and nobody is sneaking with the APR. I do look forward to the completion of that NCAA website that will have the APR scores for every sport for every University.

The simple answer for why other schools avoid APR hits:

    1. BCS conference schools spend a LOT of money on academic tutoring, advisors, and academic facilities for their athletes. That is actually a recruiting tool also. The articles comparing the spending on academic resources for athletes showed a *huge* gap between the big-budget schools and most non-BCS conference schools.

    2. Many schools have “athlete-friendly” majors and any athlete struggling with academics are “encouraged” to switch to those majors and take “athlete-friendly” classes. A classic example of this is Michigan–remember that series of articles I posted last year that showed how their athletes focused on one particular major and how their “independent study” was pretty much an automatic “A” class in which they did little to no work?

    3. Having some athletes leave early doesn’t hurt that badly if the rest of the athletes are making adequate academic progress. The APR standard doesn’t require everyone to graduate, if some hits are taken a school can still safely be above the standard. Plus, some athletes who leave early take summer school (like Vince Young) and get their degrees.

    A-House,

I remember when ST reported about how UH had a computer lab donated for athletics tutoring but the room was locked and none of the athletes got to use it. That was really sad.

  137. A-House January 18, 2009 9:20 pm

    ST:

How can someone decide that it’s better to not be charged with “lack of institutional control” when the rule did not exist when UH recruited Costas. Someone at UH had no balls!!

Com’on, if the protest was filed a year AFTER the 2002 title was awarded, then the new rule/law was created, and then go back 3 years and say Costas is ineligible is truly BULL SHIT!! Some admin type at UH, if he/she is still there, must have many nights of restless sleep over this kind of decision or simply does not care for UH as an institution. This kind of admin decisons drive me crazy and CHEATS THE ATHLETES AND UNIVERESITY OF ITS RIGHTFUL OWNERSHIP.

  138. Garret January 18, 2009 9:21 pm

    A-House,

Was that really back in 1995? Wow, that was under a different AD. I guess ST gave the real explanation above…I’m guessing that the statute of limitations is well over for an appeal.

  139. Garret January 18, 2009 9:23 pm

    A-House,

I do not disagree with #137…sadly, that was a UH decision according to what ST indicated. Kind of hard for UH to appeal their own decision to not appeal.

  140. Garret January 18, 2009 9:29 pm

Okay, now the timeline makes sense…it was not back in 1995 (I got confused by #127), I had thought that it wasn’t that long ago. I just looked up several articles on the issue and it is clear that HF was in charge then…and the reports said that he was in charge of UH’s appeal process.

  141. el guapo January 18, 2009 9:30 pm

Walter Kirimitsu was General Counsel at the time.

    Wasn’t the lab vandalized?

  142. A-House January 18, 2009 9:31 pm

    Garret:

I am not after a consipiracy theory, but I am after fairness/equality for all schools when a certain rule is applied.

Certain schools are getting around or finding a way to get around the rule, like Michigan, by cheating the student out of a quality education. This means that the athletic department is only concerned about the student’s abilities/talent on the field and not the student himself. Also, getting A’s for little or no work is no different in doing no work but being paid as some athletes have mentioned of “financial aid” provided by boosters.

Did I read somewhere that the NCAA is looking into what Michigan and other schools are doing to make athletes “eligible”.

Like ST posted, why does the NCAA not apply the same APR rule to basketball as it does to football? Is it because the “big time schools” would be hurt?

  143. Garret January 18, 2009 9:34 pm

Ka Leo article indicates that HF sure didn’t spend much to fight for the men’s volleyball team.

“This is the end,” UH Athletics Director Herman Frazier said Tuesday of the year-long issue, adding that the university has “exhausted all our appeals.”

Frazier said that he considers the matter “completely closed.”

Gouveia said the basis of the appeal was that the rule does not mandate the removal of a title but says that the NCAA “may” remove a title. Frazier said that the appeals process cost the university less than $20,000.

  144. jm2375 January 18, 2009 9:35 pm

ST – I was wondering about that in bb. I kinda got worried about it when GU picked up a very highly rated recruit (Monroe) this year. The only player I remember John Thompson Jr let go early was Iverson. Probably cuz he was such a problem child.

  145. al ™ January 18, 2009 9:37 pm

a quick check shows that seven ucla football players were drafted in the past three years and six of the seven were on teams this year. this does not count the total number of nfl players.

uh on the other hand had six drafted and only four remain on active rosters.

  146. Garret January 18, 2009 9:38 pm

ST’s article about how UH accepted the NCAA’s ruling.

“At this point, we have to just take our medicine and move on,” Frazier said.

“We’ve exhausted all of our appeals,” Frazier said. “This is it for us.”

Frazier said UH hired an outside law firm to represent the school on the Mainland. Those fees, plus the airfares to argue the case in Phoenix, cost the school “probably less than $20,000,” Frazier said.

  147. jm2375 January 18, 2009 9:39 pm

Garret – I thought Lewis lost their title too and that’s why Sean Carney transferred to UH. Did they actually get it back?

  148. MIke January 18, 2009 9:41 pm

Saw Alexander at last night’s hoops game and he looked totally bored. Don’t blame him. He was gone when I looked over with a few minutes left in the game. Thank goodness for free tix.

  149. Garret January 18, 2009 9:45 pm

    A-House,

For basketball teams with the small roster size, you’d have a ton of schools (UH included) with huge APR swings year-by-year. The roster sizes of both sports are not really comparable, and the rules aren’t consistent for entering the draft for both sports…so, you *cannot* apply the same rule to both sports. That is a simple fact–as long as the early entry rules differ and the roster sizes are so different, the APR rules have to differ. UH would also have been hurt by English leaving early and some other situations with basketball if the APR rules were stricter.

I do not disagree with you that what Michigan did was shameful, and I’ve posted other articles about how athletes “cluster” in majors at many other schools too. However, that isn’t violating the APR rules, since they are getting grades in classes that count towards their degree.

  150. Garret January 18, 2009 9:47 pm

    jm2375,

I don’t follow Lewis so I don’t know. But I do remember that BYU got their title back the year after UH lost theirs.

  151. Garret January 18, 2009 9:49 pm

The NCAA used to allow high school basketball players to go straight to the NBA (Kobe, Garnett, LeBron, etc.). Now, they require those players to play in the NCAA (or Europe) for a year before they can enter the NBA draft. Since they made that rule, can they penalize the school the athlete attends when he leaves for the draft after 1 year?

  152. Garret January 18, 2009 9:49 pm

Big day tomorrow and I’m posting way too much…good night everyone.

  153. el guapo January 18, 2009 9:50 pm

  154. el guapo January 18, 2009 9:55 pm

The pro leagues are the ones who dictate when players can be drafted, not the NCAA.

  155. al ™ January 18, 2009 9:57 pm

    mike….he was not alone.

  156. al ™ January 18, 2009 10:10 pm

sad thing about the basketball team is that the players are being labeled as lazy or are just standing around or having a poor attitude.

i don’t know about you guys but, i don’t blame the players as they are being unjustifiably labeled. i tell you, it is the system that they are running or the abscence thereof. we seem to have no clue as to how to attack a basic 2-3 zone.

true we lack a solid pg, true we are really missing a 2 guard, and a 3 who can consistently take the outside shot. can’t do anything about that this year.

but, we can go back to the drawing board and redefine how we play and wnich systems to run.

NCAA penalty strips UH of volleyball title

    By Stephen Tsai
    Advertiser Staff Writer

    What’s at stake
The NCAA ruled that UH committed a “secondary violation” for using an ineligible player during the 2002 men’s volleyball season. Here is what is expected to happen:

UH will relinquish 2002 national championship and trophy.

UH will pay fine of $5,000 to NCAA.

UH will not forfeit regular-season matches during player’s four-season career.

With the exception of the player, UH players will be allowed to keep their championship rings.

Player must return all of his NCAA awards.

Player will not be asked to repay scholarship money.

    The NCAA violation
The NCAA bylaw under which the University of Hawai’i was found to be in violation involved Article 12 regarding amateurism. Under Article 12.2.3.2, competition with professionals, the rule was revised and became effective in August 2002, after UH had won the NCAA men’s volleyball title.

Here is the rule before August 2002 and its revision:

    Previous version

An individual shall not be eligible for intercollegiate athletics in a sport if the individual ever participated on a team and knew (or had reason to know) that the team was a professional team in that sport. …

    2002 revision

An individual shall not be eligible for intercollegiate athletics in a sport if the individual ever competed on a professional team in that sport….

    (Revised April 25, 2002, effective Aug. 1, 2002.)

The NCAA yesterday stripped the University of Hawai’i men’s volleyball team of its 2002 national championship because it used a player with professional experience, school officials announced.
“This is a sad day,” UH men’s volleyball coach Mike Wilton said.

UH and NCAA officials refused to publicly name the player, but Costas Theocharidis, a four-time All-America outside hitter who finished his UH career in April, told The Advertiser last month he was the target of the NCAA investigation. Theocharidis did not return messages left on his cellular telephone yesterday.

The NCAA ruled that Theocharidis, who was raised in Greece, played in 22 matches for a professional team in Europe before enrolling at UH in August 1999. Although UH officials said the accused player did not receive a salary or sign a contract, a player forfeits his amateur status

    for the full story-
    http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/article/2003/Sep/06/sp/sp02a.html

    In my opinion-

No mater how you slice it, I think the NCAA was right on this call by taking away the Volleyball championship away from the UH. It looks like a straight forward decision to me where the amateur rules prior to 2002 mandates that an amateur can’t play on a professional team in that sport. And Costas did. If I were the UH I would have looked at Costas’ application where he’s required to list all outside sport’s clubs and affiliations etc., and see if there was any intent to defraud, cheat, and circumvent the rules on Costas part-and if there wasn’t then all the finger pointing should be towards the athletic dept, compliance people or whom ever at the UH that processes these applications.

he needs to have someone who can develop his guards and implement an offense for him.

nash’s strengths differ from this stuff, so he needs to find the perfect compliments for his coaching team.

Stick with the conspiracy theory. I’m in agreement. I heard tons of interviews and read articles and stories about how columnists and talk show hosts talk about how the NCAA is like a cesspool filled with cheaters, namely at all the big time schools and conferences. Basketball is the worst. Article after article I’ve read where some of these star athletes are getting paid, athletes families being taken care of, professors being bribed-everything. If your familar with the Reggie Bush case that’s a prime example of the NCAA not enforcing the rules. And you want to know why? It all comes down to the monies, the tv revenues. And less about integrity, but don’t expect the NCAA to bring down the cash cows.

I had heard that the NCAA took away UH’s volleyball title because it wanted to crack down on schools being lax in their due diligence with non-US players who may have played with professionals in their home country playing in NCAA sports (specifically basketball), so they took away UH’s volleyball title for the rules violation because it was a minor non-revenue sport (few schools field men’s volleyball teams). It made schools do their due diligence to ensure non-US players were eligible in all sports because no one would want to risk losing an NCAA title.

    Thanks, momotaro.

  173. Pomai January 19, 2009 1:07 am

I do believe that the player’s mentioned in #170 would still be in the NFL even if they went to a small school/UH, when the tire meets the road it’s the rubber.

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere.

At least UH is offering to good players. Gotta feel good that our coaches are scrapping with the big boyz. Its all about pcerception, really.

Remember, Mack looked up at the crowd by the tunnel after the ND game as he went off the field. Our coach has class and holds his head high. With guyz like Funaki on our team, Hawaii has excellent role models and a excellent future. And I gotta remind myself, this was Mack’s first year with some key coaches in their first yeat at D1. It takes time to get all the parts working well together, getting the most out of each other.

    whitey,

I see that roysan16 answered your question.

    Go Warriors!

  176. bighilofan2 January 19, 2009 2:49 am

And with recruiting Hawaii kids to play for Hawaii, if you believe in eye candy, its only going to get better. Thats what Rich Miano and the Cooke Ching Field and the Speed and Quickness clinics are going to do. That man is building rapport with the coaches and kids. Like PBS, it takes time to make a great pot of soup.

  177. bighilofan2 January 19, 2009 2:51 am

Gina Hashimoto ~ Thank goodness you have your dog back home. Pets sometimes become a very important part of the family.

It was clearly a top priority for you to offer such a generous award. I hope that who ever found your dog did not seek the reward.

Now I can get back to bed!

(Note to Pomai – Pray for early Spring thaw).

  179. bighilofan2 January 19, 2009 3:04 am

it was less than a year ago that 2 OL at the S&Q clinics were recruited, Chauncey and Benson, for the upcoming class. plus they went after Cayman before his zingers helped Punahou. just goes to show that our coaches know what they’re doing on the recruiting side.

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

Re recruits- sometimes the kids can get “spoiled” a little early- thinking they are being wooed by colleges a la Jerry McGuire characters.
I like what Coach Jones did- finding good boys who were humbled by circumstances that made them hungry to prove themselves truly good and appreciative that a school would give them am opportunity for “redemption” and a second chance to be successful.

These athletes were already digging deep in the playbook of character and “clinging to the hem of the robe” of the Lord. They had something to prove to themselves, their families and society. And they did, and they are loved and successful today.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

    Stanjarivus McKay

    From ESPN West Recruiting Blog

“I already made my decision but I don’t want to release it until I’ve had a chance to call the other coaches and let them know first. I’m planning to do that tomorrow.”

This is pretty classy of S. McKay. Showing a little gratitude to the other coaches and teams, showing a little respect along the way by thanking the other coaches tells a lot of the type of character that S. McKay has.
I don’t know if all recruits have the same decorum. But for Coach Mac, I’m thinking, he’d have to have a lot respect for the athletes that go elsewhere but also part with class. And S. McKay certainly did.

    Coach Mack,

Perception and communication, its all in da communication.

Yesterday afternoon da wife an I wuz at Home Depot buying stuffs. Get dis lady working there, used to paddle, put on a little wait so I tellz her
“hey why don’t you come back an paddle, Tues. Fri., 3:15, do yu guud” She says “yah, but you not going work me to death right?” an I sayz to her “wit me, next ting yu no, yu goin get vizhuns ah da whip, da black go go boots going up to mid thigh, barkin….” she looks agast an sayz in da sultry voice “hey, you talkin to my lie dat an your wife is standing right here…” and my wife tells her “he’s talking about himself” 😆

Hey! I ran into Aaron Bain late last night at Pearl Kai 24 HR Fitness.

He asked he if I was using a machine and I had to do a double take to make sure it was him, but yeah, I just thanked him for all he did this year despite the over all struggles the offense had, he was real adamant to thank those that kept coming to the stadium this year despite the record and hopes nothing but the best for next year’s team.

He mentioned that he’d be graduating in the spring (I think OR he’d continue his schooling beyond that).

Nice guy. Braddah can lift A LOT!

It goes with what Jason said the other day about the additional challenges these guys face that can be very distracting during their time at UH. They hunger for excellence because they’ve seen what the bottom of the barrel looks like. For them, there is no where else to go but up!

Whenever we went up to cut our own Christmas tree down, we’d go visit an old friend my grandkids had nicknamed, “Grizzy Adams.” He lived up past Auburn on the way to Grass Valley. They loved to spend the day snow sledding out back of his spread. That was before they discovered Boreal.

We all learned about Dr. King in school, but I understood the true scope of his influence as I got older.

We still hear about discrimination in our country and for us that live in Hawaii, it’s hard to fathom and understand.

Personally and honestly speaking, I cannot even begin to understand how some one that lived during the time of Dr. King could just “turn the other cheek”. I have yet to even come close to trying to attain those kinds of morals.

Dr. King is BY FAR a better man than I am and I think we all know and believe that he is a better man amongst most men and women. The world would benefit with more “Dr. Kings” in positions of power in government, business, medicine, etc…

A reminder of the risk involved for all who strap it up…

That hit was downright intense. I believe the last piece of information is that McGahee’s neurological functions are normal and not much to report on his “intense neck pain”… Best case scenario it’s just a case of whiplash and he’ll WALK out of there with a headache.

Good to see him moving his limbs as he was carried out of the stadium though.

With all the DUMB things pro-athletes do on and off the field getting the kind of media exposure those actions do, it brings reality to the surface to see players from both teams taking a moment to hope for the best for a fallen brother.

I think McGahee will be fine. You can’t keep a football player down!!!

Walking the hills of Maunawili this morning, I could not help but drift back to my posts last night about the UH’s VB championship taken away from the NCAA.

Since there was no negligence involved it taking away what the NCAA did, there should be NO statute of limitations applicable to this situation. Similar to Congress passing a law and decades can go by before it is challenged in the judicial system and then revised by Congress. If I am correct, UH can re-open its appeal at any time. Correct or am I blowing smoke up my ass?

Now, what is the process and who can file a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) with the NCAA to reveal WHO filed the complaint against UH? I would like to see any documents filed including transcripts/notes of phone conversations between the person(s) and NCAA and how the NCAA decided on actions to be taken against UH inlcuding who voted for and against the penalties. I don’t believe this is considered “privileged” information.

Also, I would like to see the process, documents, logic, and votes by NCAA members on why BYU was able to keep its championship and trophy in tact.

    roysan16:

the “original” NCAA language of participation on a “pro-team” does not match the team Costas played on – it was a team with 2 or 3 professionals players, NOT a professional team.

current rule is vague and does not really address specifics and, IMHO, would be very easy to tear apart by a half decent attorney.

and, what about all the U.S. college players who play against a team with pros on their team or opponents team (pick up basket ball game or charity game)? does this not happen all the time? or, is the NCAA rule discrimnatory only against non-U.S.A. players?

I am amazed that “lack of institutional control” included steps not taken by a school for something that did not exist 5 years before the complaint was filed and deemed necessary by the NCAA to revise the “rule” and retroactive it 5 years. If a school blantantly abused a rule, then it’s a different story.

As for Reggie Bush, the NCAA already made an excuse for not pursuing their investigation because it may jeapordize the criminal investigtion. I don’t see the NCAA making any outward effort to bring its side to a close. Or, is it like the civil case must wait until the criminal case is completed (like OJ Simpson ). If the NCAA continues to keep its track record of “favoring” the big name schools, is there a cause to fiel a Federal discrmination suit against the NCAA? A discrimination suit, I was told, once filed, opens that entity to any and all issues that the prosecutor may find interesting and chose to investigate. That’s why companies do not like Federal discrimination actions because it can open a whole can of worms.

    so ST, our good neighbor:

What kind of call did Coach Mack receive from S. McKay?

Did one or more of the Long Beach Poly recruits commit to another team?

Will there be a new blog today? Nah, go enjoy your holiday!!

  257. Kazz January 19, 2009 12:54 pm

    A-House,

I share the same feelings you do about that incident as well as many other things regarding the NCAA.

Too many times we have seen stories about larger instituations getting a slap on the wrist and TOO MANY TIMES have I heard stories from those that attend those same universities that share the same suspecions.

  258. Kazz January 19, 2009 12:55 pm

    ST,

I know the season is underway and there is a lot to do, but do you think Coach Wilton would have some time to chat with us?

  259. Kazz January 19, 2009 1:05 pm

    A-House,

The more and more I read the blog over the last couple of days about UH’s 2002 National Championship in Men’s Volleyball, the more I believe that had Jim Donovan been in charge back then, he would have gone down swinging.

Jim Donovan would have not laid back and let the NCAA easily take away what was rightfully ours!

A-House ~ What is your intention in bringing the matter to the fore? Do you feel that we will gain anything from appealing the ruling now that the water has flowed over the washed out VB bridge?

…and A-house do you honestly think we can get these lunk heads to establish a new set of rules that will apply to all of the Sports teams?

If that were possible, then I say the Reggie Bush case is just one of the ‘shadow’ cases that should be re-opened and ruled on as harshly as they did our insignificant little VB tantrum that some ‘anon’ pinhead threw.

Get a rope!…(Just a figure of speech Mrs. A-house!…No worry!).

  261. Kazz January 19, 2009 1:12 pm

    Kekoa,

Has our resident attorney Tom Mui given his $0.02 about this?

  262. Kekoa January 19, 2009 1:59 pm

Kazz ~ No, and I’m not quite sure what the big gun slinger from Hilo would do. If he comes in like “Gun Bangley” and opens up with both barrels blazing…it ain’t gonna pretty! (But, as usual, it will be very entertaining).

Maybe because it’s just the right thing to do! Being the fact that the fumbler had the lead in it makes it just that more right……..

It reminds me of David(A-House) and Goliath(ncaa)

    GO Get’um A-House

    Kekoa:

I, for one, would like to see the NCAA rescind its position that cost UH the men’s VB national championship and make it “right” for all to witness because I truly believe that’s the right thing to do.

I do not know what it will take, but I hope that Jim Donovan will take a very hard look, including consulting with attorneys( not UH General Counsel’s office ), about the pros and cons of reopening this matter. This would include an apology from the NCAA that they erred and state why BYU got to keep “everything” versus UH losing nearly everything.
And, why did UH have to pay a $5,000 fine? Did the NCAA really need the cash?

I know that Jim D has many things on his plate, but I will discuss this when I meet him again and seek his opinion. And, I agree with Kazz, that Jim D would have done a much better job to insure that Hawaii kept its national championship in tact.

I believe this is very important for Hawaii. Maybe not so important to UCLA, but their students, IMHO, could give a rat’s ass about the 11 or 12 national championships in VB – only thing that counts for them is football and basketball. As some of the students said of their attendance at the 1995 VB championship games at Pauly Pavillion, “we came only because they no like make ass that more Hawaii fans showed up versus UCLA fans/students.”

Can our “house” attorneys respond with their positions on this matter so we can also review other opinions and why?

CHANGE, if President-Elect Obama can ask the nation to seek change, why can’t I? Does this mean that change will occur? I certainly hope so and so did Dr. Martin Luther King when he said, I hope that America will someday recognize the abilities of the person and not color of their skin……… and now our “local” boy will be sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.

There is great joy in this for me because I personally knew his Dad and as peers attending UH and dorming at Atherton YMCA. My Hawaiian pride is showing and I hope it flows from each and every resident of Hawaii. As it was said in the First Olympics by Mrs. Bogardus, “our boys”.

Right on Col A-house! You got me so pumped up about making this issue “Pono” that I’m ready i’m ready to follow your marching orders! Let’s get some answers to those questions.

  266. Kekoa January 19, 2009 4:48 pm

A-House ~ I already have a meeting scheduled with Rep Mark Takai on Wednesday afternoon after the opening festivities at the Capitol about another matter. Perhaps I can ask him to weigh in on the matter.

As you suggested, we do have some legal minds that can offer other opinions. He is certainly one that may take the lead if due diligence, and persistence yield a way to right the wrong.
