To-do list

With the new UH head coach not expected to come from the current staff, here is what awaits the successor to Greg McMackin:

β€’ Compiling a staff: AD Jim Donovan has said he wants the new guy to interview each member of the current staff. No promises on hirings, but each will receive an interview. The probable exception is receivers coach Mouse Davis, who is on vacation and expected to retire from the university. The UH assistant coaches have contracts that run through March 31, 2012. Director of player personnel George Lumpkin, director of football operations Bianca Tokumoto and video coordinator Chris Williams (who is on personal leave) are on one-year contracts.

β€’ Recruiting: This is the dead period, meaning coaches are allowed to make one phone call a week to each recruit and no in-person contact with a prospect through Jan. 3. The contact period opens for three days, then there is the quiet period (during which recruits may make recruiting visits). Then there is a dead period, followed by another contact period. UH will honor grayshirts with signed commitments. It will be up to the new coach to decide whether to honor unsigned gray-shirt offers to quarterback Ikaika Woolsey and linebacker Lance Williams. UH will honor offers to cornerback Justin Turner and defensive tackle Sione Lavaka.

β€’ Evaluate the players: Each scholarship is essentially a one-year contract. While it is a new coach’s prerogative to cut players, it is highly unlikely a scholarship will not be renewed without cause. It probably would take a player having numerous unexcused absences from practices to warrant a non-renewal.

With the committee not interviewing current staff who applied, we know now what direction they want to go in…a BRAND SPANKIN’ NEW ONE. We do have some great young guys on staff so hopefully the new coach would keep one or more of them so there is a slight level of continuity. Exciting times! Let’s it going ya’ll!

I’m sorry, but I just don’t understand that. How can the Athletic Director not have a more direct involvement in the hiring process? After all, if the coach flubs, who will take the blame?

  32. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2011 8:30 am

The committee sends over its choices of finalists to the AD, who then makes the call.

In many places, there is no search/advisory committee. The AD screens the candidates, makes the choice, then sends it up the ladder.

    UH isn’t “many places.”

my opinion is that chow gets the hire, but in a perfect world akina would be hired as associate head coach/defensive coordinator and take over once chow retires. hey, we can dream can’t we? I’d keep miano on as DB coach, tuioti as DL coach. I’d also keep lee as recruiting coordinator, but the writing may be on the wall for the others. glanville is probably out to pasture but NO UH coach inspired more aggressive or harder hitting defense, ever.

One of the ways to explain this is to treat this process like a PTA. After discussions (and arguments), the PTA head says: “Let’s vote on the bake sale. Who would like to make a motion?”

In the coaches search, the AD is the one who has to make the motion.

Why is Dirk Koetter even a “finalist”? As a season ticket-holder, I don’t want Koetter and neither should Manoa. According to this ESPN account [ http://es.pn/uzEGNi ] , Koetter played a major role in reinstating an ASU player accused of rape who was previously expelled by ASU’s chancelllor. ASU police concluded the player *did* commit the assault but Koetter still tried to protect the player and even contacted other schools about offering the perp a scholarship. Koetter’s behavior exposed ASU to legal liabilities that resulted in a “landmark settlement” arising from the victim’s lawsuit. Koetter was also a *named defendant* in the lawsuit and potentially culpable in the destruction of ASU records related to the rape — behavior which could’ve resulted in criminal charges of obstruction. At the very least, the incident depicts VERY questionable judgement by a then-Head Coach with either a perverse or grossly misguided set of priorities and a derelict sense of duty.

When has someone earned the right to become a head coach? Some guys get not one, but two chances to fail and fail miserably as head coaches.

Not so true here in Hawaii :

Dave Holmes 6 years 46-17-1 with a winning record could have coached elsewhere, ended with Hawaii.

Larry Price 3 years 15-18 with a losing record, he ended coaching career with Hawaii.

Dick Tomey 10 years 63-46-3 with a winning record have coached elsewhere.

Bob Wagner 9 years 58-49-3 with a winning record could have coached elsewhere, ended with Hawaii. (Also note best years of continued home attendance of 41,000 of more during he’s years)

Fred VonAppen 3 years 5-31 losing record, he ended coaching career with Hawaii.

(Note worst losing record of 0-12)

June Jones 9 years 76-41 with a winning record, continues to coached elsewhere.

Greg McMackin 4 years 29-25 with a slight winning record, ended with Hawaii.

  78. mikey December 19, 2011 9:28 am

If this record holds true for Hawaii, next head coach will have an winning season for the next 9 – 10 year!

Just saw an interesting piece on Outside the Lines about the Penn St. coaching search. Apparently, Penn St. is not a big payer. Paterno was only making $500,000 with roughly that much in incentives. They were talking about the fact that the current candidates reflected coaches that would not draw a big salary, such as Norwood.

  82. madeinhawaii December 19, 2011 9:32 am

This is more like the PTA is selecting the principle.

  84. mikey December 19, 2011 9:33 am

Rich Miano did not get an interview, if he is not selected by the new HC, and if he he has the aspiration of becoming a HC someday, best to continue on the bigger rock with other NCAA or NFL route to get better exposure and experience coaching position other than DB.

Nick Rolovich to me he is the hottest young OC that needs to get few more notches under his belt. If he is not selected by the new HC, he also needs to expose himself to the world what he has learned so far and he will go a long way to develop into HC someday. And I hope he will return to Hawaii someday and show us how much he has gained to return as Warrior’s Head Coach.

  85. Stephen Tsai December 19, 2011 9:33 am

VonAppen was an assistant, not DC, after leaving UH.

  86. kev-1 December 19, 2011 9:34 am

Seems like if Norwood were offered, he would actually have a decision to make, considering he would be making relatively similar money. Hmmm . . . a chance to take an exciting team into a new conference or assume the reigns of a team that has tons of tradition and history, but is currently shrouded in a cloud of suspicion and disgust.

  87. madeinhawaii December 19, 2011 9:35 am

    kev-1,

Paterno probably made a lot more as a guest speaker and through sponsors such as Nike, etc. In 2009, it was reported that he made 1.03 million +.

  88. kev-1 December 19, 2011 9:35 am

The OTL report also commented that the current Penn St. interim coach was granted an interview because it is just the right thing to do . . . you know, as a courtesy. I’m not a huge Miano fan, but usually the guy you name interim is at least granted that courtesy shot.

As a Season ticket holder for the last 29 years, I’m canceling my 8 tickets for the upcoming season. Time for some new blood to come in and root for the home team. UH, is one big scam!

  114. mikey December 19, 2011 10:14 am

Looking back at some posting over the weekend.

Got me thinking, did the current coaching staff under mind winning this year, hoping for a head coach job at UH? I hope not.

  115. mikey December 19, 2011 10:18 am

For any under staff to be considered for a job as head coach.

You need to come from a winning program.

Like Mac did with June Jones winning program.

    Mac just got lucky.

  116. madeinhawaii December 19, 2011 10:20 am

Why did they put three Punahou graduates in the committee? ..Only adds to controversy… especially since we don’t get many Punahou stars on the football team… Maybe they should have spread it around a bit more.

  117. SAWARRIOR December 19, 2011 10:22 am

I predict Norwood as next Hawaii HC.

  118. Slugger December 19, 2011 10:23 am

Mahalo for the ESPN story link on Scott! Missed seeing the TV story they were taping for ESPN. Did it play here in the US?

  119. mikey December 19, 2011 10:24 am

I gave Mac the banner I carried to Sugar Bowl, Thanking the Warriors for a Fantastic Year.

And told him I want to see him next 10 years as a head coach to show players this banner what can be accommplished or I’m coming back to take this banner back.

I wonder if Mac still remebers that?

Wonder where is that Sugar Bowl banner I carried to?

  120. 808Bowler December 19, 2011 10:28 am

Morning everyone. Was talking to my brother this weekend. He painted miano’s house and worked with him. From what he said he isn’t the easiest person to work with. Maybe theirs something to it. Idk. Idk miano but who knows. I would like to see him get a interview. But who ever it is I’m still a warrior supporter.

  121. WarriorNY December 19, 2011 10:29 am

Gotta love how all of us have been arguing about the same thing for a week. I think Tsaiko’s should vote for HC and we’d come up with a more vetted coach than this six person comity…

    Completely Off Topic,

I’m not sure if this made Hawaii news. This happened to a family friend. I really hope throughout the nation they train all school staffs so this never happens again…

mih…my point was the big money is on the board.

  123. bigislandkurt December 19, 2011 10:32 am

I was not real excited when June Jones was named head coach. His “body of work” was one that jumped out at me at the time. He had less-than-stellar results at each of his stops. I think at the time, fans were a bit more excited about McBride.

    But that soon changed.

Whoever is the new coach, I will give them full support in knowing that he is inheriting some really good players, capable to pulling off some great victories next year. Hard to judge without seeing them in action. In short, we have to give them a chance to succeed.

    BIK

  124. bigislandkurt December 19, 2011 10:34 am

Of course Kent Untermman would say that. I’d stick up for my friends too. Seems like a moot point at this stage in the game. Unless he, and all the miano supporters go and “occupy” JDs office and demand a Miano interview! So wot? get chance?

  126. DII December 19, 2011 10:38 am

  128. kakaako kid December 19, 2011 10:39 am

The committee should be commended for not giving Miano a “courtesy” interview. If he is not truly being considered, they should not waste their time and his time. Seems like Norm Chow is granting UH a “courtesy” interview and he should be eliminated for having this attitude about something so dear to us. I have favored Banker all along, but the fast-track pace has me wondering if Norwood is the front runner. I am not sure Akina would be willing to look at our facilities (compared to Texas) and think this is his dream job. Koetter is looking for a stepping stone and would be gone after a successful season and stay after several miserable ones. 6:5 Banker over Norwood.

  129. MattyBoy December 19, 2011 10:41 am

    122,

Uh no. If that was the case, then Miano would be head coach already. I don’t think so…..

  137. (Jesse) James December 19, 2011 10:54 am

If Banker gets selected, I hope that he can convince Coach Cav to come back and resurrect our O-Line….

  138. bigislandkurt December 19, 2011 10:55 am

    Courtesy interview?

Waste time. If I was Miano, I’d rather face up to the straight truths and move on, than to be strung along with something as trivial as a courtesy interview.

On a related note, why does UH “owe” miano so much? Didn’t he make it to the league because of his time at UH? And last I checked, UH paid him a nice sum to coach football. It seems like it is because of UH football that Rich Miano is where he is at today…..not the other way around.

Things like this happens in Big Boy college football. Don’t let your hearts get in the way of business. This is business.

And NO, I am not a Miano hater. I got so much aloha for his story and his accomplishments. But this story just does not add up in the credentials category that is required to be a head coach in Big boy football. Previous posters are right — he needs to get off Oahu and venture on to some other programs. Perhaps be the head coach of a small school, a JUCO, or even a coordinator at some mid major. That is the REAL reason why he is not getting an interview — his resume does not add up. His time at UH certainly does, but that is not a condition that necessarily breeds success. One word: Nash.

Move on. Open your hearts to the new era. Great things await.

I am one of those making calls.

I feel, as many of my fellow FB Alums, that out of courtesy and respect, Rich Miano should have been selected to be interviewed, not auto-selected to be Head Coach, but to be interviewed.

I might add that many of us

FB alums have questions for the interview committee as to their football game & football program acumen, or, pose those questions to the person who selected the search/interview committee.

  140. mikey December 19, 2011 11:00 am

madeinhawaii #117 I don’t think the fact that they were to the same school is really that important. What they contribute to the Community and to UH is.

If what school has contributed the most players to UH, I would suspect that it would be Waianae or Waipahu. The Kahuku players seem to gravitate to BYU/Utah and Kamehameha goes mostly to Colorado

  143. numbah1 December 19, 2011 11:10 am

#113, Sayonara, “Sayonara.” Guess since he won’t be interviewed by the committee (made up of mostly business leaders) Miano’s supposed influence in the business community was BS, huh. Or, perhaps he’s really that outclassed by the finalists.

  144. Let Donovan Choose December 19, 2011 11:11 am

  146. 808Bowler December 19, 2011 11:16 am

Maybe by not having miano hc uh can keep him on board with all the programs he runs. If he become hc and do bad and get fired them he be gone with all that he do. I know they said no coaches are gurantee a job but what they say and do can be 2 different things. Gurantee miano gets kept on board with the new hc.

  148. Old School Dave December 19, 2011 11:23 am

Maybe Miano will consider coaching another position like outside linebackers with the new HC. Such a move can only help his coaching resume. Nothing personal, and I think Miano has tried his best, but I feel that the defensive secondary would benefit from a new coach.

  149. al December 19, 2011 11:25 am

  150. Koa Tree December 19, 2011 11:26 am

Jim Donovan is putting himself in a corner. He apparently has no real input in the current hiring process. As far as responsibility as you reference above, ST, JD could be the “fall guy” if the new coach does not work out and yet others will certainly be credited if the new coach pays off. Not a good position to be in for JD. I think the interviews of the current assistants would only be because certain committee members would like to save a few of the assistants on the current staff.

  151. al December 19, 2011 11:26 am

Oh well… life goes on. Main thing we get a coach that can surround himself with some very adroit assistants.

  156. Derek December 19, 2011 11:41 am

I’m with Kent Untermann and Jesse Sapolu who called in to BC this morning. My wife and I were season ticket holders since we were at UH as students thru the Bob Wagner years. You are talking about from 1965 to around 1995. That’s 30 years. Since UH offered PPV I’ve bought the PPV entire package every year. I’ve been a long time Koa Anuenue booster for years, I’ve been a NaKoa member too for several years. Now, sadly I am neither because we are on fixed income and sadly I am disgusted with how the hiring has gone down or will go down. I think Miano has gotten a rotten deal up to this point. Of the other interviewees

I’m not overly impressed. Everyone of them have had their moments, but also have had failures also. I can’t back anyone of them, and I don’t think Miano is any worse than them. Everybody has something to prove if they are to take us to the next level. If they are not totally sold on Miano, give them a 1 year contract an see what he can do. If he doesn’t prove the team’s performance UH can move on. If he does well, UH can extend his contract. To me, it’s a no lose situation. It’s worth a shot. It won’t cost much. Miano will not grumble because he’s a team player and his heart is here. Don’t disrespect him.

  158. Garret December 19, 2011 11:48 am

Nevada is bringing some of its band to the Hawaii Bowl thanks to extra seats available on their charter. It appears that the WAC will lose big money on the Hawaii Bowl this year, since the conference covers the cost for the charter. The nice thing is that Nevada will be paying for 25 more hotel rooms. Picking 30 out of 130 band members much have been really controversial…the 100 band members who aren’t getting an all-expense trip to Hawaii must be pretty unhappy.

The WAC pays for the charter, but it is the school’s responsibility to contract with a charter company. Hackett said the quotes on two 737s this year were about $415,000 and $383,000. Ryan’s Charters, the company Nevada deals with frequently, then came back with a 767 for $360,000.

The savings will balance out with the need for about 25 more hotel rooms, but Nevada managed to make a little more than $160,000 in 2009, the last time it played in the Hawaii Bowl.

There are 130 band members, and only 30 are going.

“They were very tough decisions,” said Plenk, who had about 48 hours from when he was notified to come up with his top 30.

  159. Garret December 19, 2011 11:49 am

Nevada sure won’t be selling many tickets…just *10* tickets sold via phone, but 590 tickets distributed via their pass-list (comp) tickets.

As of Thursday afternoon, Nevada had sold just 10 tickets through phone sales, but had distributed about 600 because pass-list tickets count in tickets distributed. The Hawaii Bowl, mostly because of its annual Christmas Eve date, has historically not been a well-attended game by fans of mainland teams. In 2009, there were about 150-200 Wolf Pack fans at the Hawaii Bowl.

  160. Old School Dave December 19, 2011 11:52 am

While I respect their opinions, I would not expect anything less from a former teammate supporting another. But sometimes even the judgement of friends can be clouded and not be objective.

  161. Bowwar December 19, 2011 11:54 am

#152 – That’s exactly the position I feel Miano would excel in should a new coach be hired. I don’t feel any new coach should be obligated to choose any of the existing staff although there are some that might be good to keep.

Honestly, based on the credentials and feedback, this is going to be a very TOUGH call…Alot will depend on the interviews and what each candidate had to offer. I’ve revised my guess that it will be either Akina, Banker, or Norwood. Either of them will do a good job at UH.

Talk about committees –in general– reminded me of a Murphy’s Law that stated “When a committee makes a bad decision, no one is to blame”.

Went looking for it on Google, but found this one instead: “A committee can make a decision that is dumber than any of it’s members”.

    πŸ™‚

Anyway, if JD has the final choice, I will support his decision.

  172. kev-1 December 19, 2011 12:02 pm

Either that, or his job prevents him from wasting time on a blog.

  173. primo123 December 19, 2011 12:02 pm

i dont think the committee believes MIANO is the right person for the job at this time. They beileve there are better candidates in the pot.

That said…..they may actually be doing MIANO a favor, by NOT interviewing him.

This way, the next head coach, can interview and then HIRE Miano onto his staff. This current situation just doesn’t warrant hiring Miano at this time.

    Couple of reasons:

    1. Why hire someone from the regime you just retired the head coach from?

    2. Which HC candidate would hire to their staff, someone that was also interviewed for the same job you just got? By not interviewing Miano, gives him the best chance of getting onto the next HC’s staff.

    3. Why not interview/hire Miano for HC position?….See #1 and #2 above…..

  174. kev-1 December 19, 2011 12:04 pm

  179. puamamane December 19, 2011 12:09 pm

I don’t get the handwringing over Rich Miano. Yeah, he’s a Hawaii loyalist. But Miano was also responsible for the WORST performing unit on the team this season next to STs. The Warriors ranked near the bottom among all schools in passing-yardage-allowed [ http://bit.ly/tNAJwL ] and passing-TDs-allowed [ http://bit.ly/tS1qnM ]. In fact, you could reasonably assert that had Miano’s unit performed better, Hawaii might have managed 3-4 more wins (4 losses by 8 points-or-less) for a 9-10 win season. You could also make the case Miano’s retention through 13 seasons and several head coaches is “reward” enough.

  180. primo123 December 19, 2011 12:10 pm

  182. papajoe2 December 19, 2011 12:12 pm

30 for Nevada’s band is a tough decision but probably made easier now that school is out. Some of the band members could be from out of town. I take it that the charter is leaving out of Reno. Getting flights at this time of the year to go to Reno must be very expensive. I bet the members that are on the bubble would be fighting to go to Hawaii. I’ve been to Reno in November and that is the coldest place I’ve ever been to.

  183. primo123 December 19, 2011 12:13 pm

miano says he probably wont be interviewed.

but he will support the new head coach whomever it will be.

Whoever made the right prediction on the next coach please don’t say I told you so or I knew he was the one. Everyone got a 20% chance of being correct.

My 20% chance is Chow. Why because he will keep 1-3 of the current staff and he will be like Mack retire down the road and most likely a winner. Also another pension check to add to his retirement. The most important question answered is I will not use UH as a stepping stone.

Flip side I have an 80% chance of being wrong.

Nice change of pace will be good for UH too.

  209. mikey December 19, 2011 12:46 pm

12 years of same secondary coaching is just too long at one position.

Change of pace from different view will be welcoming to position players.

  212. Old School Dave December 19, 2011 12:54 pm

Did Kamehameha DE Kory Rasmussen ever consider UH? I’m sure that the Kamehameha HC David Stant (former UH D-lineman) is a UH backer. I think the jury is still out on the Colorado program and John Embree. Still, Boulder seems to be an attractive place for many Hawaii HS players (thanks to Brian Cabral).

  219. AdmrVT December 19, 2011 1:01 pm

ST — Your 1st and 3rd points on your “to do list” will become critical, given the apparent short list of candidates from which the new coach will be chosen from, and more so, since many want the program to move in a new direction.

As I noted, there are about 50 players on the roster who are freshmen, redshirt freshmen or sophomores – with the offensive players tailored to the RnS. With a change in system, expect a slow migration of players in the next year, unless the new coaching staff finds a place for the returnees fit in. Thus, we begin a 3-year rebuild and transformation. Hope those clamoring for change exhibit patience. We are going to need it.

That rumor goes back years ago and started on the internet.

A private investigator, hired by the someone close to the VB Player and her family, traced the rumor to an anti-football professor at UH. The professor said he heard the rumor from someone, but he admitted he did not have any evidence of such a claim. The professor said he just wanted the media to do an investigation. He never agreed to back off, but he did stop and deleted posts where he could.

The VB player is married and according to those close to her, had her first child a few years ago with her husband.

    REPOST and adding some thoughts:

i dont think the search committee believes MIANO is the right person for the job at this time. They believe there are better candidates in the pot.

That said…..they may actually be doing MIANO a favor, by NOT interviewing him.

This way, the next head coach, can interview and then HIRE Miano onto his staff.

The current situation just doesn’t warrant hiring Miano at this time.(he’s part of the staff that just got their HC, retired)(The perception of CHANGE needs to occur to bring the FANS back to the stadium)(We don’t want STATUS QUO)

    Couple of THOUGHTS:

    1. Why hire someone from the regime you just “retired” the head coach from?

    2. Which HC candidate would hire to their staff, someone that was also interviewed for the same job you just got?

By not interviewing Miano, gives him the best chance of getting onto the next HC’s staff.

    3. Why NOT interview/hire Miano for HC position?….See #1 and #2 above..

  250. 808Bowler December 19, 2011 1:52 pm

#233 Good point. There are 3 “Bert Kobayashis” involved with UH athletics. Bert T. Kobayashi, an attorney, attended UH but received his BA from Gettysburg & JD from Hastings. He’s a big mover (obviously, sitting on the selection cmte) in Hawaii athletics & reportedly negotiated McMackin’s contract. Bert A. Kobayashi Sr. & his son, Bert A. 283. Old Diver December 19, 2011 3:05 pm

    It’s about the process……………….

When choosing to fill a position which is on the public dime it’s all about the process. While we might complain about the President, Senator, Governor etc. we respect the office because we trust in the process in which they were chosen. We understand the process of majority rules and each person has one vote. In the case of the selection of the head coach, the process has been hidden behind closed doors. We the public are not privy to the criteria the selection committee is using. We don’t know how the selection committee was formed and who selected them. It is hard for me to believe Jim Donovan selected the members and gave them the sole responsibility to make the selection since it’s his butt on the line. If not for the prying media we would have no idea who was interviewed. We still don’t know who applied. The new head coach will be tainted by a process which we the public do not trust. That is not fair to him.

Takeru Kobayashi, born in Nagano, Japan, ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes at the Nathan’s Coney Island hot dog-eating contest in July 4, 2001 , doubling the previous record of 25. The record was so unexpected that when Kobayashi got to the later numbers, the organizers ran out of signs indicating how many dogs Kobayashi had eaten and had to resort to handwritten signs. Kobayashi would go on to break his own record three times in winning the contest six consecutive times (2001–2006).

  308. Redondowarrior December 19, 2011 4:32 pm

If it’s Norwood, hope he can bring Randy Clements (also from Baylor) with him. Clements is the co-offensive coordinator in charge of the OLine. Baylor really improved their run game when he came aboard.

  309. tommui December 19, 2011 4:51 pm

#305 Derek – if you mean Bert Jr. – the one that is on the Committee – he is one of the officer in Na Koa, a big donor to the UH and its football team, does a lot of charity work, knows a lot of people and probably hits them for contribution to the UH athletic programs.

He probably knows more about football programs, organizations, and the football game – probably more than a lot of people on this blog.

  310. DII December 19, 2011 4:58 pm

Banker out? Maybe the other 4 will ride off into the sunset! In comes Miano….The Holy Grail!!!!!

  311. puamamane December 19, 2011 5:06 pm

#310 Bert T. Jr, the atty and selection cmte mbr, isn’t (currently) listed at Na Koa as an officer or director [ http://bit.ly/vDh5IH ]. Agree re football cred as former player, major booster & Manoa mover.

    #301 WassupDoc/Capitolist

Just to let you know that Bert Kobayashi (formal name Bertrand) was a member of the State House from 1979 through 1982 and the State Senate from 1983 through 1994.

reminds me of a story when Ah Sook Wong was killed in a Tong war in San Francisco. They were really after Ah So Wong. And they sent an apology to the widow “So sorry, wrong Wong, slip of Tong”.

Senator Bertrand Kobayashi is not the Bert Kobayashi of the selection Committee or the Bert Kobayashi of the Board of Regents or the Bert (B.J) Kobayashi of construction fame or the Bert Kobayashi who was a Supreme Court Judge, father of Bert Kobayashi of the selection committee.

  317. shorebreak December 19, 2011 5:39 pm

3 Punahou people on the selection committee; is the enrollment at UH 50% from that school. Let’s see the numbers.

Okay Tsaikos…may the best man win. Last of the kids arrive tonight.

    TD! NINERS!

  320. tommui December 19, 2011 6:18 pm

All this stuff about Punahou – I don’t know if it is Punahou-envy or some troll trying to get a rise out of people. If the people on the committee are able citizens, I don’t care whether they graduated from Punahou or Timbuktu.

If we are going to make enrollment at UH the criteria, then we should have a Japanese HC. Or if it Chinese, a Chinese coach. If the majority of our enrollment comes from Waipahu, then a graduate of Waipahu or if the percentage of enrollment is female, then a female coach.

If you want to argue that Norm Chow or Duane Akina are absolutely unqualified, it isn’t because they went to Punahou. If you want to argue that the best person to be the coach is Norwood, then why should we have him as coach if the enrollment at UH doesn’t have enough African-Americans.

  321. Kanole December 19, 2011 6:19 pm

Dirk Koetter a leading candidate. Many happy Jaguar fans!

    http://jacksonville.com/opinion/blog/429812/tania-ganguli/2011-12-19/jaguars-offensive-coordinator-dirk-koetter-reportedly

  322. d1shima December 19, 2011 6:26 pm

Actually comments are somewhat split with unhappy Jag fans and those who say his hands were tied by: 1) the HC’s “70’s style” game-planning; and 2) no talent beyond MJD

  323. d1shima December 19, 2011 6:28 pm

  330. Shadow December 19, 2011 6:45 pm

Koetter??? I can’t imagine what the Committee sees in this candidate. His body of work is not impressive at all. The thing I remember about him is that UH “killed” his team in a Bowl game. The Warriors clearly outcoached, outplayed, outeverythinged his Sun Devils & we might pick him as our HC? I’ve also seen the Jaguars play in person and their offense is hell. I hope JD has the last say and can put some sense in the final selection.

  331. Bryson December 19, 2011 6:45 pm

If this rumor is true about Koetter being the next HC then I relinquish my season tickets.

1)I will not support someone who can look the other way when their star players are involved in illegal activities.

2)I will not support a coach who was average at best being a head coach.

3)I will stick around to witness a “watch the grass grow type of offense being installed…

I would be very dissapointed if this does happen…more dissapointed that he would be hired without a true face to face interview…Skype is one thing but seeing someone’s mannerism in person is a complete different story…

Yes, a man tasked to to lead our program, but a man nonetheless.

    Life is funny sometimes…

  342. Ralph December 19, 2011 7:05 pm

K State arrives Tuesday night via Hawaiian Airlines. Hopefully all of the Diamond Head Classic teams utilize Hawaiian Air, a Diamond Corporate Partner in UH athletics.

K State will play S. Illinois Salukis at 11:30 am on Thursday at the SSC to an empty house. In the last 2 weeks they played at 2 neutral sites, INSIGHT Coliseum in Wichita against West Virginia before 15K fans and a week later at the SPRINT CENTER in Kansas City before 17K rabid fans defeating #20 Alabama.

I hope the Diamond Head Classic can help kick start the UH season with more than 4K fans that have attended the previous pre season games.

  343. Kevin December 19, 2011 7:06 pm

Now I can say it, but out of the finalists… I wanted Norwood.

  360. Bryson December 19, 2011 7:30 pm

I’m just not a supporter of jumping out of 1 frying pan into another and to me that’s what the hiring of Koetter would be…Right now he doesn’t know if he’ll be employed next season so he’s trying to secure a job which I understand …but 1 of 2 things will happen if he is successful he won’t be here long… If he isn’t then the repercussion could have a long lasting effect on this program…

  361. MattyBoy December 19, 2011 7:32 pm

What do you mean by controversial?

  362. Manoa Mist December 19, 2011 7:36 pm

  366. Old Diver December 19, 2011 7:50 pm

I can understand why some might want to give up their season tickets if Koetter is chosen and I can also understand why some believe they are fair weather fans. Just to be clear I’ll be going to the games next year and will continue my Na Koa membership. When I look on the stands I see them filled with middle age to older fans. These people make up the base who support the program financially and by attending games. This demographic will be the ones who are offended by the type of program Koetter ran at ASU. You can call them whatever you want but they keep the program going. The big money players are important but if you lose your base you lose your program. I hope the committee keeps this in mind.

  367. Luna December 19, 2011 7:50 pm

Not sure about these Punahou alumni….if they couldn’t get into St. Louis and had to go to Punahou can we trust their judgment?

  368. Old Diver December 19, 2011 7:52 pm

Sorry for the poor grammar, tough typing on a smart phone.

  369. madeinhawaii December 19, 2011 8:05 pm

Koetter’s overall record at Arizona is about the same as Mack’s was at 40-34, but his in conference record is terrible at 21-28. Yes, he was in a tougher conference, but he also had higher rated players at his disposal… in other words….parity. If he really is the next head coach, one has to wonder if it was selection by lowest bid.

  370. Old Diver December 19, 2011 8:11 pm

    #370

    MIH

Koetter had way more money to work with, a lower administions standard and no institutional control. That is a winning formula at most schools. Maybe the committee will be working to lower entrance requirements and those cumbersome institutional controls.

  371. kryon December 19, 2011 8:13 pm

YO-Committee and applicants:Think & do like Justin’s song…”you can take da boy from da island but not da island from da boy.” Make a Hawaii coaching dream team!!! 65 yr Chow HC, cuz last chance by age. Rolo OC. R & S with pro-style. Akina DC. Keep Cal, Miano, Tuioti, and Tomey(recruiting). Bring in some other hawaii ties to finish off the staff. You all want to come home only as HC. Well time to just come home and put the “OH(yeah)” back into “Ohana”. Lets see how good you can make us together. Nuff making the mainland happy. Return the Love & respect back to the island.Lets make Hawaii big time. Time to give back.

  375. kapakahi December 19, 2011 8:18 pm

While Dirk Koetter might be the leading HC candidate….probably because he’s the only finalist with college head coaching experience, no obvious local ties….or even contacts with the local HS coaches for recruiting purposes….since Dirk never actively recruited any local kids while he was at Boise State or at Arizona State.

If Dirk is indeed the next HC, JMHO that his assistant coaching staff will need to have some good contacts with the local HS coaching community…..to fill the biggest recruiting need area (Oline)….especially with alot of good local HS Class of 2012 Oline prospects….in order to build some depth.

  376. Da Punchbowl Kid December 19, 2011 8:19 pm

    Hire the guy that can:

    1) Score points with some version of a spread offense and do so without 4 5 star level QB’s

    2) Get the defense to fly around and hut people

    3) Improve the special teams that were an embarrassment

I’m really warming to the fiery, energetic Akina after 4 years of the jovial grandpa. Hire Akina, keep Rolo

Akina makes twice what Aranda was making here. The salary of the assistants is really more of an issue that the pay of the head coach. This might be the main reason there were a lack of big name applicants. Don’t expect the next HC to bring in big name assistants.

  395. Ralph December 19, 2011 8:52 pm

Adolpho becoming a force, 14 pts, 15 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 BS. Add that to Jackson’s 20 points and 10 rebounds, the Na Wahine got a force in the paint. but their 20 TO is a constant problem.

  396. d1shima December 19, 2011 8:53 pm

    Possibility?

Leave the most financially successful program in the nation to take a drop in position for less than half the pay from a school who has annual department shortfalls to live in a more expensive place where you wouldn’t be able to afford a home? Sounds good but

Bert Jr. is a public school grad – he went to Roosevelt; I agree totally with d Tommui’s comments. To add, he also was a military interrogator. I was opposing counsel in a case with Bert; he’s tough, smart, and fair. He’s a heavy hitter with a lot of life experiences. it’s good that he’s sitting on the advisory committee.

  400. Old School Dave December 19, 2011 9:02 pm

Assistants, if they’re capable up and comers, usually spend maybe 2-3 seasons at one school, then will receive an offer to move on. Dick Tomey had a number of very good young assistants like that. That’s the nature of the beast. I read about some Utah fans complaining about the fact that many of their coordinators and assistants have made a name for themselves and moved on to greener pastures at other schools.

  403. Luna December 19, 2011 9:03 pm

No Miano…….I’ll take Akina. He wants it and has family here. I have an issue with a coach with no local ties as it usually does not work out with CEO’s that transfer here to run local business’s either.

  404. Old School Dave December 19, 2011 9:05 pm

I remember back in the day when UH BOR and attorney Wally Fujiyama was kicking up a storm. Read about him in Cayetano’s book. Former police office who became a high powered attorney. He was a straight shooter that rubbed some the wrong way.

It was always difficult to judge the AD because he inherited coaches and administrators.

This is the end of the fourth year. By the end of this week, he will have hired three of the coaches of profitable programs (football, men’s basketball and men’s volleyball).

Hmmm…. looking at who Donovan hired, he has been selecting younger coaches. Wade and Arnold were also known recruiters. If these are some of his criteria, Norwood would definitely shoot towards the top of his own list.

Koetter??? I can’t imagine what the Committee sees in this candidate. His body of work is not impressive at all.

Body of work is just one of the things they will look at. To be fair, Koetter knows his stuff when it comes to a passing offense. He played quarterback so he is sort of like June Jones in that regards. If you look when UH hired Jones, his body of work at the time was not impressive either. His only head coaching stint at that point was in the NFL where he had a losing record. From the time of his college playing career, he was a constant mover, never in any one place for a long time. So when Jones was announced as UH head coach, I was skeptical. But he stayed for awhile and put the program on the map.

As to why Koetter couldn’t produce during his time at Arizona State, only he can answer that. Same goes for the things that went down during his watch. Talking to Boise fans, they liked Koetter because he was a personable guy. Leads me to believe part of the problem is ASU with its party reputation. Plus wasn’t our former AD from there?

He isn’t my top guy because of those problems. Brings too much questions as far as his decisions go. I know the pressure from boosters and the administration to win is great but you have to make certain calls that go beyond those things.

Did a lot of reading today, and some soul searching regarding the current state of football at the University of Hawaii.

With all the names that have been made public over the past few days, I took some time to read up on all five candidates that were interviewed over the weekend.

To me, there’s two candidates I just don’t get.

Banker and Koetter. Now I understand they both come from brand name programs collegeiately, and Koetter, in fact, is currently OC for the NFL’s Jaguars, but…….

I’m finding it hard to get excited about two prospects from organizations that are in major slumps right now.

Oregon State went 3-9 in 2011 and the Beavers were ranked #83 in the country in total defense.

Jacksonville’s offense right now is anemic, horrible even, ranked dead last in the NFL. Dang, in there last game they threw for 91 yards.

Again I ask, “Why is anybody excited about such possibilities?”

With that said, Duane Akina, since his original departure from the 808 after five years under Bob Wagner, I’m yet to figure out where the Hawaii part of him stood. Not many recruits with local ties in his 14 seasons at Arizona, not ONE to my finding did he ever pull into Texas in his 11 years.

Those three, in my opinion, is my hope, are out.

That leaves Brian Norwood and Norm Chow. Both, I think, we can call true candidates with Hawaii ties.

Chow, in his 40+ years of coaching and a resume that’s second to none, has always recruited Hawaii. And back to his resume….WOW! Part of three National Championships and mentor to 4 Heisman Trophy winners. Not to mention guys like Jim McMachon and Hall of Famer Steve Young. Again, WOW!

Norwood, can’t find anything negative about the guy. Nothing.

Family, God, Team, Family….Any way you mix or match it, it comes out winner.

Not worried about age or anything (46), but I withhold all out excitement because after his only seasons as DC, our Radford graduate had those responsibilities taken from him.

After all is said and done, and after my own personal process of elimination, I’m at a point where I’d be most excited if Norm Chow was named later this week as our new University of Hawaii head football coach.

Norm Chow, head coach, Warrior football!!!!!

  438. Derek December 19, 2011 11:07 pm

You cannot compare Bob Nash with Rich Miano. Hawaii has a lot of Division I football players, lucky to get one a year in basketball. It’s like comparing apples, with oranges. Nash couldn’t get good players in BB. Arnold is proving that he can get better players. Miano has recruited v. good players ala Colt and Kealoha.

  439. bigislandkurt December 19, 2011 11:11 pm

    It’s Chow’s to refuse.

    If he refuses, Koetter.

Open your hearts to the new era for the warriors. Could be very soon my friends. Be like water.

    BIK

  440. madeinhawaii December 19, 2011 11:35 pm

    Derek,

Yes, Miano did recruit a few good players, but he recruited them for Head Coaches, JJ and Mack, not for Rich Miano. There is the difference.

  441. whitey December 19, 2011 11:40 pm

ciriticing the selection committee is one, but not knowing who they are and bad mouthing them is not too smart. i don’t kow any of the selection committee personally, but i do know that the rock went to osu at the same time as sam harris at colorado and john berrington at iowa state, jean rolles husband started chuck’s cellar and my uncle richard use to babysit her kids, duane kurisu the winter ball league in hawaii which produced ichiro. i have heard or read about the rest of the committee and they seem to have the right stuff to select our hew hc. to bad mouth them is not too cool expecially if you neva met them.

  442. Bleed Green and White December 20, 2011 12:11 am

For me, I really never did appreciate Miano publically politicing for the gig. It kind of rubbed me the wrong way. I don’t know the guy, but it came off almost desperate, almost begging and really sincere or classy.

As for the committee, don’t know them either, personally that is, but each one of them is highly successful, so how could you not have respect for them.

Upstanding members of society et all…….

Koetter, to me, simply had nothing to do with Hawaii. At all seemingly. I like the fact we can grow our own. One of us so to speak.

Akina, in my opinion, unlike Chow, never really worked the local kids to join him wherever he was coaching. I always felt Chow kept his feet firmly planted on the rock thru recruiting.

Banker, I just didn’t see the logic in hiring a guy from a program struggling more than UH. Despite the fact it’s in the PAC-12, it was the bottom of the PAC-12 wasn’t it….?

Norwood, I really do look at him as a close second to Chow. I read up on him and it a;; comes across as great person. Family man, straight as an arrow seemingly Much class, stand up person, well liked, and currently part of a very successful program.

  443. krump1_AKA_protector December 20, 2011 12:30 am

    Derek on #440,

I’m tired of people bashing Coach Nash undeservedly. He recruited good players; had 3 very good players in the fold. UH, in its well-documented incompetence, could not hire Nash in a timely fashion, so the 3 players went to Utah State and New Mexico state and at least 2 ended up as all-WAC Conference players to my recollection. Since then, UH has streamlined / shortened their hiring process (e.g. Coach Gib’s hire). UH set Nash up for failure; place the blame where it really belongs. And by the way, it didn’t help that Hiram was rusty and hobbled and that his best player (Amis) went down unexpectedly. If Nash been hired sooner and the 3 had stayed, it would’ve been a different story and you wouldn’t constantly be bad-mouthing a classy coach.

  444. Capitolist/WassupDoc December 20, 2011 1:35 am

Congrats again to the Wahine basketball team for their win earlier tonight. A completely different team came out to play in the second half.

With respect to selecting the new coach – I would definitely prefer to hire someone who is young and able to grow rather than someone who’s been around for the past seventy kazillion years.

However, if I am still around next September, I’ll be at Aloha Stadium no matter who is selected. However, I don’t think that I’ll even finish up 2011-2012 NCAA sports year.

The only really junk hire over the past decade was Jim Bolla.

The baseball team officially starts spring training on January 3rd. Go ‘Bows.

Whoever it was that snarked at the use of the word Rainbow as a team name, go take a Hawaiian culture class before you bad-mouth the word. All the men”s teams should be called Rainbow Warriors.

  457. Buffoman December 20, 2011 6:53 am

Koetter must have said things that were simply amazing to have the committee overlook past alleged transgressions at ASU. His must have been a well laid out plan of action with promises to keep much of the staff.

Somehow if that is the case, I just do not see that translating to a huge ground swell of re-interest by the fickled local fan base to rush out and buy tickets. Hopefully, if he is chosen, there is something else buried in that “package” he put forth, such as he would get Chris Naeole to coach O-line and Mike Singletary will come to be D-coordinator as they both really don’t need the money.

I am not advocating for Koetter, but doesn’t it seem reasonable that he would be the front runner for now simply because he’s been a HC?

  461. VonAppen December 20, 2011 7:13 am

According t0 BC Miano didn’t even make the first cut. Applicants had to have a HC or coordinators experience to survive the cut. Was that the DQ’s for the job?

  462. bigislandkurt December 20, 2011 7:15 am

Just say no to the possibility of Singletary in Hawaii. NO NO NO. Too much rage. His players turned on him in San Fran. I wonder why? And these very same players are now part of the #2 seed in the NFL.

  463. bigislandkurt December 20, 2011 7:16 am

Koetter might be the front runner because UH and Norm Chow could be MILES apart on a contract agreement.

    just say NO to Koetter

  465. RedZone December 20, 2011 7:34 am

I don’t mind Koetter using UH as a stepping stone. Many have. It would also mean that he would have to be successful to do so. I think that is what we need now.

  466. VonAppen December 20, 2011 7:34 am

Reardon: Koetter x’s and o’s are right up there but- with the recent national scandals his checkered past at ASU-UH upper campus would put itself in a bad place by hiring Koetter.

There will be behind the scenes action today.

BC said two former NFL HC’s, Mike Martz and Brad Childress, applied but did not make the cut.

He also thinks a decision will be made late this week or early next week.
