Family ties
Former UH head coach Bob Wagner said he would be “disappointed” if the next Warrior coach did not have ties to the program as a coach or player. Wagner said there are enough candidates with school ties that UH needs to “keep it in the family.”
He said a deserving candidate is someone who has “sweat equity” in the program.

Duke Bukoski, a former all-state receiver from Saint Louis School, is in the process of relinquishing a football scholarship at Idaho State to transfer to UH as a walk-on. If all goes well, he would be able to enroll at UH in January for the 2012 spring semester.

The argument seems pretty simple to me when it comes to the downtrodden attendance this season.
ONE side believes Coach Mack shouldn’t have been let go and they blame stadium officials and policies.
ONE side believes does place the blame on attendance due to the team’s overall performance and this Coach Mack is the point man on this, as with ANY head coach.
The combination of a stuggling team with unprecedented losses to lesser teams AND compiling stadium security policies led to the decline on attendance.
Sorry, blaming ONLY the stadium staff’s policies is incorrect and removing any responsibilty from ONE individual that is tasked with the ultimate responsibility for the welfare of the program.
We’re not talking about a gradual decline from the average 36K dwindling down to 34K or 33K… We’re talking about a decline from 36-34K down to 22-21K and and UNPRECEDENTED 90% drop in student participation over the course of ONE GAME (NMSU game to the USU game).

Thx D1. The whole recruiting process is a rollercoaster ride. But we are believing in faith that the Lord has something awesome for Pono. It will be an awesome story that I can share with everyone when it all falls in place. He is on the board with several very good programs and we’re just waiting for someone to pull the trigger. His grades are good and he’s training hard right now. Kaha’i is his personal trainer. ha!
The university as a whole could benefit from some OBJECTIVITY as opposed to relying on “da hui”.

I KNOW Wagner came in as a coordinator so that’s why I asked “when he FIRST came to Hawaii”.
While his first position was not obviously the HC position, I think Wagner could appreciate the fact that people can still come here, win, be successful and then adapt and make those friendships, relationships, etc…
Wagner’s final UH staff included Banker and Ken Flajole (now the Rams’ defensive coordinator).

That period of no-home games being a factor makes me wonder because one would think with all that dead time at home people might be starved for some football at home, BUT for the non-season ticket holder, they’ve probably made plans in advance in situations like that.
But the WHOLE season had a very OFF feeling to it.
There have been a lot of good coaches who have come from “the family.”
Dom Capers coached the UH DBs in the mid-1970s. He’s now the defensive coordinator for that unbeaten NFL team in Wisconsin.

Rich Miano was the first UH coach in Colt Brennan’s home.
Bob Wagner came to UH in the spring of 1977 as the new defensive secondary coach under Larry Price. Wagner had been a GA (much older than most) at Washington under Don James for 1 season. Prior to that he coached at at several Div-III schools back in the Midwest. When Larry Price resigned after spring ball, Wagner was retained by new UH HC Dick Tomey. Wagner was elevated to DC in 1983 (?) after Doug Kay (who was one of the best UH DCs ever) left. After that, he was named HC in 1987 when Tomey left for Arizona.
Prior to 1982, UH football offices worked out of portables (now used by the ROTC and the HELP ESL Program) in the “Quarry” as it was called. Not much privacy back then, so when coaches needed to speak to players individually they used to go to their cars and talk.

Wagner did a lot for UH, and many of the school’s changes came from ideas he wrote about in his book.
Wagner was a big factor in starting Na Koa (he was the first coach to break away from the Quarterback Club), and he decided to implement an offense to compensate for the disadvantages of recruiting in Hawaii. And he beat BYU twice. His undoing is that after winning the 1992 Holiday Bowl, Utah and other schools poured money into their facilities and program; UH did not. Schools like Fresno State began taking Prop 42s; UH stopped taking them.
But Wagner certainly has local ties now. He’s the AD at Kamehameha-Hawaii.

As far as the next HC, may the best man win. Hopefully that WILL be a man from within the UH family. But family ties aren’t always a good reason to hire someone. Anybody who’s worked for family or in organizations where family was hired first can attest to that fact.
Whoever the next Head Coach is, let’s do our best to welcome and support him and the program.

Bob Wagner wasn’t a perfect, but he did a lot with what he had at that time. After the Holiday Bowl win in 92, the attitude among the UH administrators from what I heard (Stephen can correct me if I’m wrong), was “Hey, you did well with what you have, why should we invest more in facility upgrades, coaching salaries, recruiting budgets, etc.)? In the process, someone had the bright idea of tightening admission requirements (becoming the “Stanford of the Pacific”), that affected the recruiting, particularly from the JUCO ranks. Thus, school like Utah starting making huge in-roads to recruiting in Hawaii.
When Wagner was let go, he had a winning overall record, and had signed Adrian Klemm, Kaulana Noa, Tony Tuioti, etc.
The fear was attendance was dropping, and that it would affect season-ticket sales.
Former UH player, now attorney/newscaster Shawn Ching commented that the sofas recently replaced in the football coaches offices were the same ones there when he was a freshman in 1987.
So who is in and who’s out? I don’t mind if it is third hand knowledge. Let the people know 😉

It’s just never a good idea to have carpet in football offices.
Bob Wagner’s teams would hold clinics or mini camps throughout Oahu high schools. I really liked that. Got the younger kids all fired up. Coach Lumpkin was there. Nice guy and easy to talk to.
Wagner’s last recruiting class included George Ornellas, Stevie Laulu, Peter Salavea, (and as ST mentioned) Adrian Klemm, Kaulana Noa, Tony Tuioti. The first three mentioned all left after one year due to grades and other issues.
And they were right… but it wasn’t Wagner’s fault.. it was the hiring process and hired coach that followed.
Re: Carpets- Stephen would be interesting to get the CSI guys to examine the carpets…..maybe not.
I think the low point was when the turf was removed from Cooke Field. Seeing the players do conditioning drills on the black top.
I remember when Larry Price used to bring recruits to campus in the white Rainbow Warrior mini van. He’d basically show them Cooke Field and that was about it. Back to Waikiki.
For those of you who want to support the Hawaii Bowl by buying tickets, but don’t really want to go to the game, they have a unpublicized program. They will allow you to buy tickets through them and they in turn will give it to a charity of your choice. When you buy through them and have it go to a charity you don’t have to pay any of the fees. Exactly, Bob Wagner was the first big picture guy we had as head coach. Wagner told the administration that they were moving money too fast from football revenues to comply with Title IX and that it would affect the success of the football team. After the Holiday Bowl win the administration felt the football team would be on cruise control and didn’t listen. Wagner was assured that wins and losses didn’t matter as long as he ran a clean program. That’s what made his firing so sad and caused Wallace’s out burst. I know JD gets some blame here, but like the rest of he has to follow orders
JJ is a great coach, but it didn’t hurt that half the WAC teams bolted before his first season.

In Wagner’s last year, the team had a disappointing season, and underacheived. As attendence fell and they continued to lose, I remember a lot of dis-harmony…. interviews with non-starters saying “I don’t know why “I’m not playing… type quotes…” I vaguely remember columnists saying UH needed to make a decision about changing coaches cuz they were losing money…. fans saying the offense was stale, and we needed a change…. Declining attendence was one of the reasons Hugh Yoshida gave for firing Wagner… There were a lot of similarities to Mack’s last year….

That guy was, in my opinion, the best defensive coordinator at UH. he sure made our boys play tough and brought a real sense that when you come to play a UH team, you’ll remember who hit or tackled you.
There has been a lot of talk about attendance and the declining amount of season tickets being sold. Mac and his performance might be one factor in the declining attendance.
One factor, however, that no one has talked about is the seat premiums. I understand that the seat premiums bring in money to the program, but its done so at the cost of fans. Now UH is asking a smaller group of season ticket holders to shell out more money to support the program. If they hadn’t instituted the premiums, they may have had more season ticket holders.
They also increased the premiums this year, probably turning away even more season ticket holders.
I could understand if the stadium was always sold out and you had a large wait list, but now you are asking a smaller group of people to give more money. Its become a team for those that has the means to go.
Many now don’t buy season tickets because they can’t afford the premiums and now only come when they want to buying single game tickets because its cheaper.
Its sad, when I look around the section I sit in, to see all of these long time season ticket holders missing. I am not talking about just a few, but maybe 20 or so people in our section alone. Many who had been supporting the program for over 15 years. I think UH should waived the premiums for those season ticket holders that had bought season tickets for over 20 years as a way of thanking them for their long standing support.
If you want to talk about building a fan base, the premiums were a step back from that. It was a way to push out long time supporters of the program. UH could have been better in not pushing out those fans.
#71 Yup The team started to go downhill, but I still say it was about the time that Coach Johnson “lost” his playbook. I think it was the previous year.
Wagner’s firing helped vonAppen get a lot of things. VonAppen’s firing helped JJ. JJ’s departure helped McMackin. I think the trend is going in a different direction now. UH is not going to invest more money into the program; it’s going to try to make better use of the money it does allocate.
I remember Riley Wallace speaking up for Wagner and wondering if that would lead to his termination, too. It was pretty heated. I had a deeper appreciation and respect for Riley after that.
Buffoman: Doug Kay was an outstanding DC for Tomey’s 80-82 teams. Really knowledgeable coach who knew how to properly utilize the players he had and make adjustments.
UH practices at that time were very different from today. You’d see players walking back to the locker room bloodied, taped up, limping, black & blued. Very different time and breed of players and football. That’s how UH developed their reputation for a hard hitting team back then.

Hard to say?? Don’t really know who the candidates are?
I suppose there’s a balance between aggressive practices and functional practices. In the 90s, UH had a hard-hitting safety nicknamed “Torpedo Head.” He was probably one of the most ferocious tacklers I’ve ever seen. But, alas, Torpedo Head kept getting hurt in practice, and never really played for UH.
But Falaniko Vitale did make it in another violent sport.
Who knows what the students are thinking. There is a disconnect between UH and the whole state, not just between athletics and students. Not like the state (and O’ahu, for that matter) is huge. I mean, we basically have a captive audience. Seems that most activities that involve the community and UH happen in the town area… no parade with UH band, or meet and greet with some athletes on the Leeward side or the North Shore, or even on the other side of the Pali, which is relatively close to Manoa. Maybe the rail system will allow for practices at UH-West on occasion. It’s good that Coach Mack had us reaching out to the neighbor islands. But we gotta reach out to our own local (O’ahu) communities (and the military, as has been often mentioned) too, to generate interest and support for those ‘seats in the seats’. PPJ2 brings up clinics and mini camps with UH and local schools… that is a perfect way to reconnect! But don’t limit it to just football. Make as many connections as possible… athletic and academic. Our coaches and many student-athletes do a lot already. I never hear of academic professors making time to better local high schools. Maybe some of them do. I just never hear of it happening.
Marketing bites. UH should also have more going on with sales of their product line. While living the past 15+ years in Michigan, we’d see the usual Michigan and Michigan State stuff in nearly every store. There were lots of places selling Ohio State and Notre Dame stuff too. Now in Georgia for the past 5 months, and of course there’s the usual Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia Southern stuff. There’s also lots of Florida stuff out here, with some SEC stuff sprinkled in. Not much of anything else. No ACC, Big East, etc. (aside from those in-state teams)… at least not in our area, and we’re about 45 minutes or so from Athens. I’m gonna have to go to a game there, just to compare experiences with the Big House.
My pick would be Rolo. He might be the biggest risk but with the greatest potential return. Miano might be second. I am curious about what Cal Lee could put together. Heck, as a Punahou alum it sure felt like he was running a college level program over at St Louis all those years. The guy is a winner.
I honestly think that the HC almost doesn’t matter if we don’t increase the salary ranges for the assistants. It is crazy that there are OCs and DCs out there that make more money than their school presidents, but that is the world we live in.
I don’t think that anyone that looks like they might treat the program as a stepping stone should be considered. If Koetter had three winning seasons in a row he would be off to a different program without a second thought. I don’t mind ambition… but the ambition should be to create a dynasty (Peterson style) at UH.

Assistant coaches salaries will be crucial to attract talented people. Success is often dependent on the staff the HC puts together. Not sure what the UH salary scales are for assistants are now, but I remember former coaches like Mike Cavanaugh and Vantz Singletary living in the UH faculty housing in Manoa during their time here. Housing costs being what they are (see this morning’s SA Headline).
On the decline of attendenace for our games I was thinking of making a list of who I thought was responsible then realized it would be a long list, so maybe I should make a list of who is not responsiblie, so here is the list:

No, I’m sorry, but there is no “MIGHT” when it comes to the performance and overall fan opinion of Greg McMackin as a HC effecting a decline in attendance this past season.
However, the GRADUAL decline over the course of 10 years CAN be attributed to the premium seat contributions.
These are two different things. The contention among most in terms of current concerns IS the attendance this past season so unless there was a massive increase in premium seat contribution prices from 2010 to 2011 or a drastic increase in overall ticket prices (our season tickets have stayed the same).
Again we’re talking about a season to season decline of an average of 35-33K on average to now 23-21K.
Who is not responsible for lack of attendance?

In response to #89. If UH had not pushed out a bunch of season ticket holders and kept a larger, more stable base of season ticket holders we would not have been in this position where we are relying on walk up sales to fill in the stadium. Everyone knows that the fan base here are made up mostly of fair weather fans that are come out according to performance, weather, and opponent.
I agree that the steady decline was due in part to the performance, but that also is one of the factors.
What would be interesting to look at would be to see what the season ticket holder base was during the von appen era and what the attendance was during those years.

My choice is whoever has the HC experience atleast on the D2 level winning team that was sucessful majority of years spent.
None of this one year crap, unless it worked with program jumping to program.
Going to the MWC needs experience, and a quality support staff.
Just because he has ties with the program as a coach or player is great, but shouldn’t be the priority.
I supported Mack, but did not agree with his salary and lack of HC credentials, and look where this is now. Too much $$ went out, and is still going out with the buyout clause.

Is it structurally possible to install luxury boxes at Aloha Stadium? Paid for by private donors, of course. Maybe too much State bureaucracy and red tape to allow this? The existing press box kinda reminds me of the old at Honolulu Stadium. Even FCS Div-IAA school stadiums have luxury/sky boxes.

UHAD is $10 mil in debt, money problems are seriously limiting what all of its teams can do, and you think that it is good that donors didn’t want to pay any of Mack’s salary? Given UH’s financial situation when Mack was hired and the even worse financial situation now, I don’t understand that stance. The only person that truly benefited from having all of the money paid by UH was Mack, since his pension will be $30k/year instead of $15k or so.
There are schools where the majority of the coach’s salary comes from the booster club or donations. SMU pays $0 for JJ, for example. If UHAD could find boosters to pick up all of the next coach’s salary, that would give a huge boost to not just football but the entire Athletic Department.

I HOPE UH maximizes the money they will put into the program when it is all said and done.
I don’t know how Na Koa operates, but from what people have been saying when it comes to a position coach getting his salary, or most of it from Na Koa, I personally don’t agree with that. Booster organizations are meant to BOOST the bottom line and not pay for what is supposed to be paid for by the budget. Certain expenditures and or “incidentals” are covered by booster clubs and that’s great.
I am NOT saying Na Koa is doing anything wrong, but unless I am misinformed or ignorant on it, they just do what is asked of them by the program as a result of shortfalls.
To me, that X amount of dollars that is supposedly for a positional coach’s salary could have gone towards other needed items or services for the program.
Salaries should be off limits when it comes to booster club funded items.
If individuals of a booster club choose to boost the salary of a coach then that too I cannot disagree with as it is the choice of individuals, but what people don’t want to see is the general funds of a booster account feeding salaries.
Funding the recruiting coordinator position is one of those exceptions though in my opinion. That position as I have come to understand it is NOT a normal coaching position and was created by Coach Mack as he felt it would BOOST the program as a whole which is fine. But a solid and permanent mainstay positional coaching position should not be paid for by the club as a whole.
People donate money to SUPPLEMENT a cause in athletics for the most part, not because they are now the ones expected to “sign the checks”.
Na Koa, like all booster organizations, it’s officers and members are concerned with improving a program financially and not worrying about keeping it afloat AS the bottom line payors. That’s the responsibility of other paid individuals tasked for that duty.

I *never* said that the Pac-12 “looks down on UH academically”. Academic reasons play NO factor in UH not getting into the Pac-12.
Boise State’s President openly admits that their academic situation makes them unworthy of being in the Pac-12, but he has discussed a 10-year plan to get their academics up to a level where they could be acceptable to the Pac-12. Adding PhD programs left and right helps their case.

seems like certain UH individuals liked the notion that “others do it so why not UH”?
I wrote a stink letter to H Fraizer about the “premium seat charge” and asked him to use a lower price, such as $25 the first year and gradually increase the fee, rather than hit us with a $200/seat charge. as usual, no response so I canceled my mauka blue seats and moved to the South end zone and sat with the “bus drivers”.

It looks like the NCAA’s plan to provide $2000/year stipends to scholarship athletes may be voted out. The interesting thing is that athletes who signed with their schools last month will get the stipend for all 4 or 5 years while athletes who sign NLI in February may not.

I thought it was strange that Hinshaw or someone with UHAD didn’t want boosters paying for part of Mack’s salary. Then Don Weirs posts that Shaw is paid somewhere around $30,000 from Na Koa.
Maybe I’m reading too much into what ST says about UH not investing more into the program but utilizing what it does invest to it’s maximum.
So with that being said, the next HC is going to have to live with that understanding.
There is only ONE guy that has been named that I can bet SOME money on the fact that he accepts that and can accept that because he’s lived through it and that is Rich Miano.

NO, that is not what I’m saying. SMU’s boosters are paying over $2 mil a year to pick up JJ’s salary, having booster donations does *not* limit what is paid to a coach.
Paying $300k would be idiotic for a program trying to stay in D-IA. Utah State is getting an awesome deal this season paying their coach $375k and they are happy he agreed to a raise to just $425k…but those types of salaries are an anomaly.
I just do not see why we should celebrate that UH paid Mack’s entire salary instead of having some of it come from elsewhere. The portion that UH did not pay could have gone to assistant coaches or upgrades that the football program sorely needs.
Wouldn’t it be better then to keep Miano as an assistant/associate and hire someone else for the bigger $? I mean, since he can accept and live with it?

That’s what I was referring to when I meant “positional coach”.
I don’t think Na Koa, as a whole, should have been responsible for paying that amount or ANY amount for the salary of a critical position coach or any “permanent” coaching position.
Personally, I don’t see Miano going anywhere.. same with Cal Lee and Lumpkin.. either here or nowhere else… so get someone else and let them reapply for their positions here. Rolo, on the other hand, I understand he has an offer elsewhere already.
CUSA gives its Hawaii Bowl representative a *sweet* deal. CUSA probably loses $500k or more on the Hawaii Bowl, but they don’t seem to care. If the MWC/CUSA merger happens, the Hawaii Bowl could be in serious trouble because they don’t pay enough to get Pac-12/Big12/Big10/ACC/SEC/BE and the MAC and Sun Belt cannot afford to lose that much money on a bowl game.

The way I look at it is UH paid McMackin $600,000, so it’s already on the hook for that amount toward the 2012 head coach.
Anything over $500,000 the first year means UH will be paying more for the position than if it kept McMackin.
But that’s fine, given the alternative: The possibility of a dramatic decline in season-ticket sales.
The best way to to do it would be to backload a contract, so McMackin’s buyout comes off the books.
Trouble is, when you buy out coaches at reduced rates, then what potential coach will agree to a back-loaded contract? It’s the MegaBucks rule: Take all of your winnings up front. Tomorrow offers no promises.

Also likely, Cav will retain some of the current staff whereas Rush may bring his own…

I used to go to every UH game from Maui since I moved here from Oahu in 2003. I have not had season tickets for the past two years, but this is due to the economy, not the team. I had season tickets since Wagner (even went to every Von Apen home game). I definitely think the economy played a huge role in the drop in attendance.
I love college football. Most people in Hawaii don’t, unless they gamble (and are winning that weekend =)). Whenever you see polls in the StarAdvertiser online regarding UH football, the #1 answer is always “I don’t care”. I agree that the problem is marketing. Of course you have to field a good product, but more importantly, you have to inspire and grow the fanbase; make them want to be a part of it all. A long-term approach needs to be applied to a constant marketing campaign. To be honest, I’m not certain why this is even needed. I grew up in KY, moved to Hawaii in ’89, and don’t know many people that have lived here their entire life that are as in love with Hawaii football as I am. I would even cheer for Hawaii against Kentucky.
I think McMackin was doing an OK job, but nothing amazing. I think a lot of it has to do with his personality. While a good coach, and awesome person, he obviously didn’t have the FIRE to WIN WIN WIN and HIS WAY. This goes back to a previous statement I made about not thinking a long-time assistant should be hired as head coach. The best head coaches are not assistants very long. They gain the experience and connections that they need, then take a head coaching job ANYWHERE because they HAVE to do things THEIR WAY. I believe their brains are wired this way. You see the same thing in the corporate world. Some people are happy doing a great job, but some people have an unstoppable desire to be the best and make their mark. This person would be the head coach we’re looking for.

A visionary AD with guts and talent knows who he wants the run his football program and goes after him. We as usual are letting the fight come to us with this process, far too many chefs messing with the recipe and quite frankly as you’ve seen this is not considered one of the better coaching jobs in America. It’s gonna be interesting………
A-House… after moving to Georgia, we had to go through the process of registering our kids in school here. In the high school, while we waited, I browsed through a book that had listings of top colleges, ranked in various subjects. One such listing was research grants. Another was average scholarship cost. Although that book was for a couple of years ago, it was interesting. Several California schools were near the top of the list. Hawaii was nowhere to be found. There were smaller schools that received more in grants than UH. Maybe that’s a key topic for the PAC-12. Don’t know. Don’t know how we compare to Colorado and Utah (grant-wise), but our APR scores are better than Colorado. Plus, consistently winning on the football field would help our case too. Although, again, I don’t see what Colorado brought to the PAC-12, aside from trying to get Texas to come along.
Tomorrow is the last day of school this year for my kids. If I remember, I’ll try to make my way back to that office to find that book.

Miano – he’s got “sweat equity” for sure. If you play safety, you’re a leader right! All great coaches have that competitive fire. Jim Harbaugh, Miles, Saban, Peterson, Kelly, Kelly, Hoke, etc. You can see it on the sidelines. I feel Miano has that.

What got me about McMackin this season was how no one in UH’s Admin circle had his back. UH Football coaches are pretty much an island unto themselves. Win and everybody wants to be on your island with you… lose and it’s like your island got hit by Iniki II. Nobody wants to visit you.
My choice for HC is Nick Rolovich. Best mind on the staff. Offensive orientation. Recognized name. More able to relate to students. More likely to give Hawaii 10 years of continuity. Already has the staff in place.
Best option is Miano! Please not Akina.

PolyMom- Your previous statements indicate Polynesian Profiling has been rampant all along. Well beyond the two years required by your said person assisting you with the investigation. It’s been prevalent all through out the southeastern section of the United States a per your claim. With that, you should have more than ample the current two years of rosters to base your investigation on.
If your claims are based on the last two years, the media day speech given by the coach in question should have occurred in this time frame. I did a search for media transcripts from all of the SEC teams within the last three years. I got all except two years from Ole Miss and a year of Tennessee. Of the transcripts I got, I could not find any fan asking a question to any coach about Polynesian players. Perhaps your claim occurred during those missing media days either at Tennessee or Old Miss.
If this speech occurred beyond the three years of my SEC search this should give you more than ample roster evidence to base your investigation on.
Now, If this speech was given by a coach NOT in the SEC, then I have to ask, what evidence do you have so far that implicates several SEC teams practicing Polynesian Profiling?

Since then our government has recognized the injustice that has unknowingly occurred for years over such a simple gesture. They have taken great strides to right this wrong, not only with Polynesians, but with other lessor known minorities such as the indigenous Alaskans.
I’ve fought our state government for the right to bury my ancestor’s bones found at Keeaumoku WalMart. Over this 6 year battle we uncovered major discrepancies in the state’s system. Several state workers quit their jobs while others got relieved of their posts. The whole system got revamped.

Norm Chow. It was either him or Duane Akina. To be honest, I was one of those who wasn’t keen on Chow this time around. Different story when he was a finalist against F.vA. Mainly figured now might be a good time to go for youth. Looking at the known applicants, only a few key names stand out on that part of the scale.
Why the change of heart? One of the few applicants who has an offense pedigree at the Division 1 level and at some powerhouse schools. Recruits well. Has a proven resume and track record at the highest levels. Brings a instantly nationally recognized name and credibility to the program.
Heading into a new conference, I believe that sort of actual experience will be a great asset. What’s more, he actually applied again after that prior experience. That tells me he wants to be here.
What I don’t know is if he is one of those who has been a lifelong assistant for a reason or if he has just been highly selective considering he has applied for the head coach at other places before but either removed his name from consideration or turned down the offer.
Oh, the guy made his money already so something tells he wants to be here for the challenge.

IMO, UH has some good talent, but they need to be used properly. I didn’t like the play calling, but I hope with Rolovich having complete authority for the offense that he will open the playbook. I didn’t like how we ran the clock down to the very end to run a play, especially when we were behind. There seemed to be no sense of urgency. Obviously, coaching decisions were questioned. For the most part, Mack/Tomey were conservative. Player coaching can be improved. Some changes need to be done in certain positions. Kicking was atrocious need to be addressed and can be addressed. The poor kicking might have cost us maybe 1 to 3 ball games. For sure, the San Jose St. game. The big key for next year is improving the offensive line, replace solid replacement for the defensive line, and finding our next starting QB. Hopefully, that QB is the holy grail. Yeah, and get some tight ends, and a hybrid player. And get the next Chad Owens too while you’re at it.

Someone earlier, asked about Dick Tomey. DT did not play football. I’m not positive, but I think he was a baseball man.
Akina was hired by Tomey and coached outside linebackers from 83-85 seasons. He was an unpaid assistant prior to that for a year. He went to the CFL after that, I believe, where he coached wit Rich Ellerson.

The schools that are giving the ‘supplement’ to one group of players and not to others, and are receiving federal funding, will be in a court case under equality/equity/access precedents (Brown v BOE). One may not sign away constitutional rights even though it is a scholarship offer.

When I was leaving high school for college I had pick a school in Texas to attend, but to my suprise, one of my teacher advised me to stay on the West Coast. The very teacher was born and raised in state of Texas.
Needlessly to say the least, I picked a Southern California School, and loo and behold meet many Hawaii students. But I pick out a New York Bronxs Jewish roommate.

Duane Akina has 28 years of journeyman service in D1A football and over 25 years with Washington, Arizona (Tomey) and Texas (Mac Brown)–all top calibre programs, including a 3-year stint with Dick Tomey at Hawaii. However, most of his coaching has been on the defensive side of the ball. Akina coached with Dick Tomey for 14 of those years @ Arizona as DB coach and shared DC with Mac Duff until being demoted to DB coach again. In 2005-2007, at Texas, Akina was promoted to Co-DC, again with Mac Duff. After a frustrating season, in which the Longhorns defense allowed a school-record 4,498 total yards, Akina was demoted to DB. Mac Duff resigned.
In 2007, it was reported on a Texas website that Akina was earning $300,000 per year. About the same amount that Norm Chow was initially earning when he came on board with Pete Carroll @ USC in 2001.
No question, Duane Akina has a resume and caveat signaling a checkered career of success.
At Arizona he helped Mac Duff produce the “desert swarm” which drew national acclaim for the wildcats. At Texas he mentored three all American DBs. But, following the 2007 season was demoted after a frustrating season which saw the longhorns relinguish a record number of total yards.
What remains is Akina’s skill in recruiting skilled-players and his ability to reach into the national college football inventory for talented position coaches/recruiters. A daunting task given Hawaii’s less than sufficient funds available to be competitive. If Akina doesnt clean house it will immediately raise red flags.
Moreover, many, including yours truly, would like to learn of Coach Akina’s offensive plan.
Historically, Tomey, Wags, Von Appen and MAC had strong defensive backgrounds, but with the exception of WAGs, started off poorly offensively.
Akina appears to have the background-knowledge as a potential CEO to put a viable football program together, but as in all businesses, does this candidate possesses the instincts to build and market a winning product without the lure of glitter that came with programs like Arizona and Texas?
This is one selection that cant be made by kicking-the-tires on a chassis of a good-looking model.
The 5 million dollar check from Ahahui Koa Anuenue presented to UH athletics represents a total collective effort by ALL UH booster clubs over the last.. Well year or so.
X from Na Koa, X from Hardcourt Hui, X from Wahine Volleyball, X from Wahine Softball booster clubs and so forth totalling 5 million.
The money has been there and it’s more of a symbolic gesture than anything.

I never said or inferred that there was any type of academic requirement to get into the PAC-12 in terms or research, grants, etc. The Pac-12 would take several below-standard schools if Texas would come along with them, for example.
Boise State is several levels below UH and that could be used to screen them out. However, UH is not at a level that would be screened out. UH academics are NOT the reason why UH is not in the Pac-12.
If Texas said that they would join the Pac-12 (and give up the Longhorn Network) if Boise State (or UH) would also be admitted, the Pac-12 would say yes in less than a second.

I have been very supportive of Coach Mack in the past and still do today. I respect what he has done and when I was back on the islands last year I came to the games in large part of what he was about not because of the outcome of the games. I was there for the Hawaii Bowl and while that was a tough game to watch, I distinctly remembered early on how difficult it was going to be for the team to win when we lost our tackle and then lost Pilares. Still had they lost as badly as they did with no one going down, I would have supported him this year too, regardless the record. If I was in Hawaii, I know this, I would have been a season ticket holder.
So whoever was yelling that might as well have been “booing” our team.
Droping down to anything less than D1 status is immediate DEATH for UH football and all of UH athletics as we know it.
Opponents can’t afford to fly out here on DII budgets and even at FCS, the travel costs for UH and the subsequent drop in funding or interest will eat UH athletics alive.
I’m just busy mocking those that suggested it as a plausible fiscal reality as soon as Greg McMackin announced his resignation. I dunno somehow the departure of Greg McMackin = the death of UH football as a D1 program is a valid idea for some…

The other check must have had too many zeroes when looking on from the stands to be anyhing more than symbolic. The ‘real money’ check was from the UH Lettrwinners Club to UHAD for $50,000 for upgrades to the Nagatani Academic Center.
I also disagree that the SEC schools don’t recruit Poly. When I was in Hawaii last year, I met a haole guy that promotes Samoan players and he told me that he tries to steer them to the South East because he’s from that area. He has open several pipelines and when I asked about what about UH, he told me that UH has always been a place of choice but the thinking was that UH was getting spoiled thinking that they could just get these guys to just walk-on. He believed that there was a lot of Div 1 talent and as a result he was making some good progress in the South.
That $50,000.00 check was a damn good one, especially for it’s cause.

Reason I’m not sold on Miano:
Granted he has many years of service here and contacts in Hawaii. He is very motivated. But something is missing for me for Miano to take to the next level.
#1. This years DB was a little disappointment to say the least as Miano said “This is one of the best DB coming back with a lot of Potenials.” Seems many of the DB didn’t show up to potential.
#2. He needs more experience and exposure and should go to another Big NCAA school for position other than DB coach.
#3. When I asked him over the summer “shouldn’t we go undefeated this season?”
He replied ” Boy you don’t ask for much do you?” Shouldn’t you as a coach?
We also ended with one of the lowest of SOS this year! We should have gone undefeated with such a low schedule as we did in year 2007! Sugar Bowl!
Selecting Miano means most of the coaching staff will remain, which could be a plus and/or more of a minuses to me. I would like to see Rolo on offense and Tuioti on defense remain at least. Just my 2 cents.

I vote miano… But reading akinas bio I like him also and Brian Norwood.
I think in order to get attendance back up we need to cut prices of concessions stands down or make a discount price for students of all ages k-college. It’s not right that a family has to pay $100 dollars n up for tickets and then spend another $100 n up in food! Nobody has that kind of money anymore. If we cut the price down an bring back the families we will mold our youth into loving UH football and athletics again. Aswell as put more people n them seats.
Also if we start by making tailgating fun for the college atmosphere. Maybe throwing a pregame concert with one of hawaiis hottest bands each week. This would bring in all students wanting to watch their favorite band and they might say what the hell I’ll go to the game since I get in free anyway!

I was the beat writer in 1995, but I honestly don’t remember much about Banker. That season was a blur. But I do remember that Tupu Alualu hosted his own end-of-the-year banquet.

Last 15 years working under OSU’s Mike Riley as DC. In 1995 he was Bob Wagner’s outside linebackers and special teams coach. He has recruited heavily in Hawaii and SoCal., coached at OSU twice, San Diego Chargers & Stanford. I believe his salary is in the $250-300K range.

I would vote for Rolo for head coach. Anyone who can throw for 500 against the bad boys from Provo has what it takes. He is a connector to the young fans, the players and to those of us who are a “little” older. Who knows who would help this young man to be a great, dynamic head coach.
From what I’ve heard on the radio and from the blog host he is intelligent, quick on his feet, articulate and can be what we want and need as as a head coach.
There is never any guarantee that he would stay put if a better offer came but im sure he woul think twice about leaving.

As mentioned by many they had a chance to elevate the program as Tomey built the program, when Wagner won the Holiday Bowl and when JJ took UH to the Sugar Bowl.
Success here and there. Miss or hit. Pay more because of JJ and now pay less because of Mack. (an excuse) UH leadership and decisions done by the effect more than cause.
Again what are the long range plans as a university as a whole for the football program. Talk and more talk and no big dreams to get away from how the program is run or viewed. The program has been pretty much the same over the last 30 years making an appearances in the top 20 here and there.
It is time that UH leadership becomes more of a cause than the effect. Think it, plan it and go out and do it. But first know what the ultimate goal is.

Warrior football needs to become a force to be reckoned with. It needs to win it’s conference on a regular basis, and never all below third place. It has to win 3 out of 5 games on the road at the very least and should regular seasons of 10 or more wins.
Boise has demonstrated that you can have a winning season, each and every season. We should demand at least that much.
BUT we cannot expect it to be solely the responsibility of our Head Coach. UH and the State need to get behind the program, lay out the foundation and the envision the path it must take to get there and not deviate from the plan, supporting all the extra-curricular activities and promotions that must accompany the drive. Boosters and Fans must also learn when and where to cheer or critique. UH and the State must put up the funds till the ball gets rolling. Like a perpetual energy generator, it has to be kick started and brought up to a certain level before it can start to feed off it’s own energy again.
We almost had it in 2007, but 2008 and 9 killed that momentum and the Bowl loss in 2010 snuffed the Olympic fire.
Bring back the option with Ivin Jasper. I’m also thinking the AD may change as well.
A-Joe, kanaka and polys in general have always had an up hill battle. That is why when you go after folks the turtle always wins. Good research, making friends with their community. That is how you take um down. But you have to understand that with Polys really making a big splash in the NFL…of course there are folks that are saying..,Wow, where are they from? Look at guys like Riki Ellinson, half Maori but very proud of being Poly! So many Poly players in the NFL.
Let me say this one reason that there are no Polys on that side of America…kids have hard time to acclimate. Thus being said…you get these kids leaving school not even there a year. So it gives Coaches a good reason not to recruit them. Our kids have to man up and show their stuff. And when you take a scholarship you stay there and prove to them our people are just as good as their players!
This will be a day to remember…end of the Iraq war. And my oldest sons birthday. Bring our boys home!

I don’t think it is a good idea to factor in the $500,000 we are paying Mack next year into the next coaches pay. I also don’t understand why everyone is so dead set that we won’t pay another coach $1m again. I would not be surprised to see a contract at $900,000.
Can they do the contract with a base pay of $X00,000 and a bonus of $X0,000 for every win?
Example: base salary $500,000 + $30,000 per win
If UH goes 10-3 the coach gets $800,000.

Earlier in the today’s blog someone mentioned that the local players are expected to walk on. I’m too lazy to look up who posted it and their exact comment about it. I can see the coaches point as a coach from another sport once told me that he cannot win with only local players and have to save scholarships for mainland players. I always wondered how a lot of our top stars and even our future NFL players would start their college as a walk on. I was wondering on the point of, are we recruiting the right people? Wasn’t his year’s team captains all walkons? It’s hard to evaluate high school players and seeing in the future if they will pan out, but it sure looks like UH has a large amount of walkons.
Not Chow, his offenses lacked scoring or any other punch since he left USC, with the Titans, UCLA and Utah.
In case anybody missed it or even cares, USC lost to Illinois in Women’s Volleyball in 5 sets. UCLA vs Illinois in the finals.

According to Scout.com & OregonLive.com, big-time OT prospect Jeremiah Poutasi (Desert Pines HS, Las Vegas, NV) apparently scheduled to take an official recruiting trip to UH this weekend….his last official recruiting trip…..after already having tripped to 4 BCS Conference schools (Arizona State, Utah, UDub, and Oklahoma State).
Hopefully Jeremiah is seriously considering UH….and not just taking a pleasure trip.

USC volleyball found out what UH teams goes through traveling to the mainland. After 4-5 days of rest USC needed to travel 3 times zones to play in the final 4. Making it even tougher was they playing 5 every night in the regionals. Then having to fly 3 time zones to play on Thursday.
I wonder if fatigue had set in a little? Nah no excuses.

I would love to have JJ back. He’s the only coach that got the Warriors to the big dance. HF/or whoever really screwed up by not trying to retain him. He had great assistant coaches, all the pieces were in place for a long time. I loved seeing Sungod, Cav, etc. on the sidelines to motivate the Warriors.
And one more thing before I call it a night,
For those backing Miano, I got one thing to say, if he could can count to 11 I would feel a little bit better about the man but from what I seen the past couple of years, the man has a very hard time signaling plays and counting at the same time. Teach the man how to count then I would give a 1 in 1,000 chance of getting the job rather than a 1 in 10,000 chance. Either way hiring Miano would be the death of football at the college level. Plain and simple.
Hoping for D Shoji’s other past number two man has a great season as well. Good luck coach Wade!

Banker is your classic “long time assistant” like Nash for Riley Wallace.
Banker spent 15 years of a 16 year career as an assistant to Mike Riley! And one not so successful year at Hawaii.
Not really pulling for one coach or another, but most time it seemed as though Miano was calling in plays, but the D linemen were slow in subbing out. May be wrong though. Good luck to whoever gets it. Can’t wait!

The defensive substitution problems were caused by Aranda making late calls. The other substitution problems would have been on offense or special teams. I can appreciate Miano not being some people’s choice for HC but blaming him for every damn problem with the team is unfair.

Five meetings/briefings today including a very interesting Stadium Authority meeting. I am too tired to summarize what happened at the Authority meeting, but I URGE all of you who have serious complaints about the Stadium’s policies & procedures to make arrangements to attend its next meeting on Thursday, January 26, at 10 am. Will explain why in my report.
There will also be a public comment meeting not yet scheduled on Stadium Adminiostrative Rules and Fees coming up. Will post that information here. That meeting will be scheduled at 6 pm and not as part of its regular monthly meeting.
Carl Clapp was at the meeting and reported that Justin is doing great and is ready to start working out.

I believe at one point Miano was a co defensive coordinator under JJ. It was just a title. Lumpkin was running the show. One of JJ’s former defensive coordinators quit because of Lumpkin. To put it bluntly, there was no reasoning with him.

I found an article that said he was the DC in Feb, 2005 but before that season started, Glanville replaced him. Then McMackin replaced Glanville in 2007. Lumpkin was DC in 2004, and I believe Kevin Lempa was DC before that. McMackin in 1999.
If so, we have never seen Miano really take charge of the defense for a season, have we?

I think George Rush would be a great head coach at Hawaii. Winning the junior college national championship every year would be great for Hawaii’s self esteem.
Joe Salavea hired to coach the defensive line at Washington State under Mike Leach. Inoke Breckterfield retained by Jim L. Mora to remain at UCLA to coach their D-Line. Was looking at them as possibilities to come in as D-line coaches with the new coaching staff.

I really don’t like Duane Akina. During the years that Akina has been at Texas they have won double digit games nine out of eleven years:

I am really worried. There is too much traffic and crowds at the games right now. Imagine when Akina and the Warriors start winning 10 to 13 games every year? There will be more dummies coming to the games. The stadium will be crowded, the parking lot will be packed. Some of us who can’t afford premium parking will have to park far away and walk ten miles to get to the game.
Say no to Akina. I like winning seven games a year. We will still go to a bowl game, but the stadium won’t be as crowded. There is more room at the stadium for us true fans. Thank you.

Banker – let me see, Oregon State ranked #83 in the NCAA in 2011 in total defense, allowing 411 yards per game. Beavers were 3-9 in 2011. Perspective: OSU #83, Tulane was #82, Washington State #81. UH if you’re interested, ranked #67.

Good point, but lets remember UH has more wins than Texas over the past two years. During that time Texas has probably spent over $60 million dollars on their football program. UH around $15 million.
So according to Tsai’s count, there are eleven to fourteen scholarships available to give in the 2012 recruiting season.
So if, as Hawaiian says, the interim staff gets committments from five mid-year JC transfers, that’ll leave about six to nine offers left for the new staff to tender when they get started?
Not a good way to start a program.

ST: still doing the coach survey? Miano
Wonder if they’ll ask any potential coach what their approach will be to altitude games in the MWC. We can’t go into every altitude stadium with no clue, or might as well chalk up all of those as losses automatically. Next year also has USC and BYU on the road. We’ve been to all of those stadiums in the past, usually with poor results.
Jeremiah Poutasi is a 4-star offensive tackle from Desert Pines in Las Vegas, Nevada. Poutasi has now said he has his last trip scheduled and it is to Hawaii this weekend. Oregon knows this and is trying to persuade him to come to Eugene instead. If he’s seriously considering playing football at Hawaii over Oklahoma State, Washington, Utah, ASU and Oregon, he’s probably not interested in a great football program. More than likely, though, he’s simply interested in visiting the sunny beaches of Hawaii. (Something June Jones used to say was one of the biggest obstacles in recruiting in Hawaii. He once said they could get anyone to visit, but they never knew if the player was really interested in playing there until they arrived.)
Nobody but Poutasi knows what his intentions are, but visiting Oregon over Hawaii would signal only one of a couple things. He’s committed to the coaches at Hawaii who’ve been recruiting him, which is great. Or he’s committed to Utah or UW or someone else and he’s looking forward to soaking up the sun. Because if he’s interested in Hawaii over all three of those other schools (as a football program) that would make very little sense.
Here’s hoping Poutasi visits Oregon and he understands their staff’s timing for offering his scholarship. He’d be a great fit.
Coach Chip Kelly was reportedly in Hawaii not long ago visiting defensive end DeForest Buckner at Punahou High. Buckner is 6′ 7″, 230lbs. and a four-star rated defensive end. He recently reported that his visit to Oregon was “stunning.” Buckner is scheduled to visit Cal this weekend, and UCLA, Utah and finally Colorado the weekend of January 27th. (Boulder in January … brrr.)

I’m figuring that playing anywhere in the US is simply a choice for education, a change of scene, playing time and crowd.
It has very little to do with exposure for the NFL as those guys find talent anywhere. Just watch when folks are introduced on Sundays and I am just amazed at where some of these players are from. True the big name schools have a number but the number that come from “directional” schools is amazing. They (NFL scouts) find talent.
Staying with the thought, if I was a 3 or even 4 star kid, why would I want to go to a school that was recruiting 4 and 5 star guys for the same position as me knowing that I’d have to really fight for playing time, all the time because the next year, they’d be recruiting for another 4 or 5 star guy for my position.
where as if I played at home where we don’t normally get the 3 star guys, I know I’d stand a darn good chance to start and play.
Must be the change of scene, education and crowd factor to make one go away.
i was a walk on in 84 and 85…with that said…ABSOLUTELY NO AKINA!!! “YES” to miano, he is not only committed to hawaii, he is committed to mentoring and developing players to go to the next level…he has invested in this community (speed and quickness) and its children for years. former walk on/ standout, eleven years in NFL and thirteen coaching at UHM…experience, desire, committment, game plan, ENERGY, that’s the kind of coach i would like to have “mentoring” my son…
with the exception of maybe experience which surely does not translate into “skill” or “knowledge”…one thing is for sure…a “MENTOR/COACH” Akina is not!!
