Interesting comment from Adam Leonard regarding Miano. I would love to hear players come out and say who they like, although that is unlikely. Can you imagine how hard it was for Graves to come out and say what he said? Now he is probably dealing with all kinds of flack (?) for being honest.

  8. UHfan808 December 7, 2011 7:45 am

    Good morning again, Tsai-kos

    Have a nice day

  9. tommui December 7, 2011 7:46 am

Good Morning to one and all!

I think it was mentioned that Coach Miano was going to do his recruiting locally.

  10. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 7:46 am

Hope the neighbor island recruiting is more thorough than in the past. No more slip ups like with Waimea’s Jordan Dizon. HPA’s Brostek is likely headed to the Pac-10, but still worthy of an offer. Max Unger and Daniel Teo-Nesheim are other HPA players who went on to greatness at Oregon and UW, respectively.

  11. kev-1 December 7, 2011 7:48 am

So people are lobbying for Dino Babers, who happens to be in the running for the Eastern Illinois job. Not that it really means anything, but are we really on the same level as Eastern Illinois?

  12. RedZone December 7, 2011 7:51 am

Thanks coach Mack for recruiting til the end.

I can’t get up for anything BYU including Anae. I cringe everytime I hear those three letters. But then I am a long time UH fan.

  13. tommui December 7, 2011 7:51 am

    kev-1

I missed it – what did Adam Leonard have to say?

I hope David is not going through a bunch of flack – after all, he was asked and he answered as best he could and as honestly as he did.

It is only when one gets older that we either shade things or say “no comment”!

  14. Da Punchbowl Kid December 7, 2011 7:52 am

  17. Nalani December 7, 2011 7:55 am

We would be lucky to get Dino. He’s a great coach. If Eastern gets him, then that’s a major get for them.

  18. RedZone December 7, 2011 7:55 am

I remember UH getting a really good kicker from the the east coast in the past.

  19. Da Punchbowl Kid December 7, 2011 7:56 am

Good Morning Nalani! Any Pono updates?

  20. LETS GO BOWS December 7, 2011 7:56 am

Miano has his favorite’s and if your not one your career is done,GO figure Tank got burn every game but he was Miano’s boy the local boys on the pine would of done a better job, now Miano sends all the coaches to the mainland and he stay’s home and recruit so he can show the people of hawaii that the local boys are first priority but when the season starts he favors the mainland kids….way to sell yourself Miano…come on jd bring in somebody who play’s the best and won’t play that favoritism game.

  21. Nalani December 7, 2011 8:00 am

#19 Pono has is close to an offer from at least two D1s. Nothing from UH at this time. We have reached out to them.

  22. Nalani December 7, 2011 8:01 am

BTW, while we’re talking about UH, has anyone heard where Mac might be headed?

  23. 808Bowler December 7, 2011 8:04 am

    Go get the talent guys.

    Good morning everyone.

  24. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:08 am

RIch Miano, like Bob Nash, is a hard worker who is dedicated, enthusiastic, and loyal to UH. He seems to have a lot of backers pushing for him to be named HC. That said, as I mentioned yesterday, Miano has a place in the program, but not as a HC. He needs to branch out and coach elsewhere to gain more experience, IMHO. If not, then coach another position on defense to broaden his coaching experience.

I also felt that Miano was blowing his horn a bit too hard and may not have come across very well to some one day after McMackin was let go, but that’s just me. Something about it just didn’t rub me the right way. Again, JMHO.

I wish UH and JD all the best in finding the best successor to Coach McMackin. TIme is of the essence. I think the key words are hiring someone who will bring excitement, enthusiasm, fire, renewed interest, and a clear plan and vision for the program.

  26. LizKauai December 7, 2011 8:12 am

    Hi Nalani! Good Luck PONO!

Re Jordon Dizon- he was shown the LOVE when he was very young. I think the decision was made even before high school. Brian Cabral was instrumental in helping Jordon adjust to CU in many ways – it’s not easy to adjust to, well, shall we say, the “culture” of being a minority in a majority environment. Jordon eventually won the day in more ways than one.

Oh yeah… I forgot. This is the Warrior Beat. ST scolded me for talking about Jordon before. Dave made me do it… 😈

  27. LizKauai (Old School) December 7, 2011 8:15 am

Re Miano – I had no feelings one way or the other until I saw him on the news last night.

First impression was not a good one. Especially in the light of ST’s article in today’s paper.

  30. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 8:16 am

  31. LizKauai (Old School) December 7, 2011 8:16 am

tommui- you can see the comments under the past blog post.

  32. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:17 am

Hi Liz. Sorry about that. But I do remember watching a pre-season game years ago between Kamehameha-Kapalama and Waimea. Although outmanned, this kid from Waimea was dragging 4-5 Warrior players at running back each time he got the ball. You knew this kid was special.

Recruiting is not an exact science, as the saying goes.

That’s the beauty of my job: I don’t get paid to give my opinion.

re Graves- as his auntie (I believe) said:

    Helen Graves:

    December 6th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

#236. You are right. DG has good character and a strong faith. When asked, he would not lie to a reporter. He shared his experiences and opinions honestly and forthrightly. Accept the interview for what it was — responses to questions asked at a time when he was upset and stressed.

  36. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:20 am

Vince Lombardi in a famous sideline rant once said: “Grab, grab, grab!! That’s all we’re doing out there! No one wants to tackle today!!”

UH needs to get back to the fundamentals and a HC and coaching staff that drives this home. Football is really a simple game. The team that tackles and blocks better usually wins.

  37. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 8:25 am

Things will be better next season because things always get better after a change. In most cases, there’s a reason a change needed to be made.

It should be interesting if they hire someone outside the current coaching staff because scholarships are one-year deals. When JJ was hired, he cut some players.

Let’s see, walk on to a D1 university and works his way up to starter. Eleven years NFL. Founder Speed and Quickness Clinic. UH pro day coordinator. UH-NFL liaison. Over ten years coaching in college. Years of experience talking in front of the TV cameras.

The only candidates from the mainland will be assistant coaches who have never been a head coach before. Assistant coaches who have been fired before landing an assistant coaching position at another school. Head coaches who are about to be fired. Former head coaches who have been fired. Assistant coaches who want to run a triple option. Coaches who have never been west of the Mississippi. Assistant coaches who have had countless interviews for head coaching positions before and have never made the cut. Assistant coaches who have been demoted. See anybody you like?

  42. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 8:34 am

I did not know that JJ was 23-28 at SMU.

He’ll do great at ASU. Extremely good facilities there. The Pac-12 is going to be wild with all of those offenses.

  43. al December 7, 2011 8:35 am

lizk…are you practicing double standards here?

you got on those of us who aired our opinion of mack.

but, now you are doing the same about miano.

what happened to all the love and peace?

  44. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:36 am

#38: Wasn’t Miano also the DC at one time? How did that work out? Just curious.

I’m optimistic that JD will find the right HC who is qualified and not just someone on the rebound.

    Good morning everyone!

The Poll Question on today’s Star-Advertiser home page is:

“Was it fair that University of Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin was forced to retire?”

Would be interesting to see a larger poll sample size than currently shown.

Vote there if you are interested.

If I recall June appointed co-defensive coordinators. Lumpkin and Miano. It wasn’t pretty for obvious reasons.

  52. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 8:41 am

What makes JJ a good coach is he can coach every offensive position. It’s his offense, he knows what he wants. That’s why he was in charge of running the defensive scout team during practices. He wanted his offense to see specific schemes and coverages.

One of the worst views is on the sideline. But somehow Jones was able to see things from that view. He’s a remarkable offensive guy.

  53. al December 7, 2011 8:42 am

stevem…the poll has been running at a 2-1 clip since it started. the numbers won’t change unless someone loads it. the thing about polls is that they are more accurate than people realize.

  54. WarriorNY December 7, 2011 8:44 am

Wow, I wonder who will be the next coach at SMU?

  55. PolyMom December 7, 2011 8:46 am

Sent text message to Charlie Strong from Louisville. Hope he applies. Told him he would be the MFWIC if he comes to Hawaii. Military talk I know some of you get it.

But let me say this, with guys like Coach Strong he wants you in your seats 15 minutes prior to kick off! And he means it. No slackers.

  56. al December 7, 2011 8:47 am

i wonder if jj will tap some of the current hawaii staff who will soon, er, could be out of a job.

i know he likes rolo and tuioti for example. they could also make for great recruiters for the norcal and nevada areas, places where asu would fit in real well.

  57. PolyMom December 7, 2011 8:48 am

And only three year contract with extensions if successful.

  58. ge December 7, 2011 8:50 am

From reading the Star-Advertiser articles during the football season, mention is often made of the Offensive Coordinator, Nick Rolovich, and Defensive Coordinator, Dave Aranda; and not much about the Associate Head Coach, Rich Miano. Perhaps, that is why his emergence as a candidate for HC is a surprise. What exactly were his dues as Associate Head Coach? Wouldn’t that prepare him for the HC job as much as more so than a Coordinator position?

From what I have heard from him on radio interviews and on the Leahey show, he was most enthusiastic and energetic, and sounded like an up and comer. But due to what I mentioned above, not in the forefront, as compared to the coordinators.

Just an observation. Hope he is evaluated fairly on his application.

    Aloha nui loa

  59. PolyMom December 7, 2011 8:53 am

@al…hope someone from UH goes or went to airport when the Pop Warner kids who won the National Championship who beat College Station, Texas. I want names and numbers for future Warrior program. LOL! BTW those kids from College Station, BIG and strong. Future Long horns and AGGIES.

  60. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 8:54 am

Fair or not, McMackin was always going to be associated with his salary, especially when the economy soured after he signed.

Whatever he accomplished, it would be measured against whatever value system we placed: Is being bowl eligible worth $1.1 million? Is winning a share of the WAC title worth $1.1 million?

It didn’t matter if UH could afford or not afford the salary. It didn’t matter if he accepted the only offer he received.

Because the amount was so much greater than what most of us can possibly dream of earning, McMackin would never be able to live up to the public’s expectations. And that applies to any high-profile public figure, such as a Bishop Estate trustee.

  61. 808Bowler December 7, 2011 8:57 am

Wow jj to asu…. Is that a done deal?

  62. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 8:58 am

Buffoman your #595 yesterday. How about an offensive head coach with a top defensive coordinator? I’ve stated that defense wins games but offense puts people in the seats. Also, maybe because of Tomey being on board, with his conservative approach to football, Coach Mac seemed to have changed his defense to prevent mode once we had a lead, and the offense also got conservative. Coach Rolo said he wanted to implimate a tight end and, at times, 2 running backs. That would have thrown off any inexperienced defensive coaches that we played against (kinda of sarcastic with UH failing to adjust).

  63. Couch potato December 7, 2011 8:59 am

for someone to say have an open mind and then turns around and says tomey and lee are too old, gee willickers.

  64. Darren December 7, 2011 9:01 am

If we were winning conference championships, crushing opponents in bowl games, and garnering Top 25 recognition, then I don’t think any football-loving fan would make a peep about a $1.1M salary.

  65. al December 7, 2011 9:03 am

Coach Jones gets you to the promised land…then rides off into the sunset. Uhhh, what just happened?? Now folks in Dallas know how those in Honolulu felt. And the timing of it all as SMU is being announced into a BCS (for now) conference this afternoon…

  68. al December 7, 2011 9:04 am

    darren…true. but….what?

  69. Bleed Green and White December 7, 2011 9:07 am

Regarding the exit of Greg McMackin, and I will not call it a retirement, I cannot take part in a lie, and that’s what it is.

Call a spade a spade, Mack was fired by UH.

Why can’t they just say that?

With that said, my heart tells me that was the right decision at this time.

Now, looking forward regarding football at UH.

Let me see, and I add the following with all due respect:

Rich Miano as “interim” head coach replacing McMackin, I agree, also the right choice since he was #2 in the pecking order the past 4 years, but I really hope it stops there.

I mean 12 hours later he’s all over every media outlet (tv, radio & print) singing his praises / tooting his own horn.

Mack’s body wasn’t even cold yet!

Let me see, I’m all for promoting from within, in fact in most cases I prefer that, I agree with rewarding hard work and effort….

But, I cannot go along with promoting a guy responsible for the maybe the worst part of the team.

Miano was in charge, has been been charge for 13 seasons here at UH mind you, of the Warriors secondary. um-teenth time repeat offenders by the way as worst part of the team.

in 2011, UH ranked 86th out of 120 division one programs in the nation defending the pass, allowing 244.9 yards per game in the air…..

Overall on defense in 20-11, home team surrendered 387.4 yards per game, that ranks 67th.

I, for one, do not want any part of ANY coach from the Warriors defense to take over the reigns.

  70. LizKauai (Old School) December 7, 2011 9:07 am

Old Diver- The issue as reported by ST was all about the $$$.

Never mind the Xs and Os or warm and fuzzy or caring about graduation rate conversations.

UH has to make the team profitable in the face of HUGE $$$$ issues that would take the brightest accounting minds with ESP, political science major with a public relations minor and tons of markers on the decision-makers who are setting up these conferences… not to mention the broadcast rights, etc. etc.

$$$ is the real issue here.

When I saw Miano on tv last night, I saw the enthusiasm of a campaigning self-promoter. Just a first impression.

But in the light of the overwhelming situation that is facing UH right now, lokahi and aloha – a real TEAM effort is required.

    And “wartime consigliere” is required.

Now, more than ever, it is time to support Warrior Football like never before is we want to see it continue.

  71. Darren December 7, 2011 9:11 am

    Al – What about Aranda?

That was the more confounding part of this season. Everyone knew the offense would not be the same, and the injuries only ensured that to be the case. But on defense, we were able to keep our starters in for the vast majority of snaps. What happened with all those 2nd half/late game collapses?? And I don’t think it’s the talent level of players because we had ballers throughout our D.

While we’re sounding off, certain folks should get off Mike Edwards case…we could only dream about having corners with this type of physical ability back in the day.

  72. Bulla December 7, 2011 9:12 am

Aloha SMU hello ASU for JJ… WOW

  73. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 9:14 am

just a repost from last night.

Tried to dig up some salaries of possible coaches that people have mentioned.

    Duane Akina ($400,000 @ Texas)

    Brian Norwood ($350,000 @ Baylor)

    Robert Anae ($150,000-$200,000 @)

Mark Banker ($350,000 @ Oregon State)

    Dino Babers (<$350,000 @ Baylor)

If these are potential candidates, is $700,000 + incentives enough to lure them away?

I was under the impression that we could not afford some of these guys like Akina or Banker. If UHAD is thinking $700,000+incentives, I think we may have a shot.

  74. Bulla December 7, 2011 9:14 am

  79. SteveM December 7, 2011 9:18 am

    RE: #54

Al — all polls have inherent “biases”. In this case, only people who are online and looking at the Star-Advertiser during poll hours will vote. The larger the sample size, the more credible, with 100% reliability coming only if everyone in the state voted.

So if a journalist referenced it in a story, the only valid statement would be, “According to a X-hour poll by the online readers of the Star-Advertiser today, the vote was 2 to 1 that….”

This poll also has a “bias” that only UH football fans would bother responding. This is good in this case.

  80. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 9:18 am

That owner of the Marlins is a great recruiter.

At 12:01 a.m., the first minute teams are allowed to meet with free agents, the owner greets Jose Reyes while wearing a “Reyes” Marlins’ jersey.

  82. Darren December 7, 2011 9:19 am

#69, Al – Was just responding to Stephen’s comment at #61. It comes down to what he mentioned as the “value system”. But really, that’s what we all expected with the $1.1M salary…and it didn’t seem too far off based on the way the program seemed to be ramping up at the time.

  83. al December 7, 2011 9:19 am

A clause in the contracts of Fresno State’s assistants calls for them to “downplay defeats by not dwelling excessively on them.” Assistants also are instructed not to make direct contact with university officers and members of the school’s board of trustees.

  86. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 9:20 am

I believe Miano was made DC after Mac.. but was replaced by Glanville after a few disastrous seasons of defense who was then followed by Mack. Miano is a good speaker, though.

  87. Darren December 7, 2011 9:22 am

Al – Cool, thanks…that tells me enough.

  88. A-House December 7, 2011 9:24 am

Isn’t JJ going to take some of his current staff with him to ASU? Makes sense to me if he intends to continue with the RNS.

JJ would not ask Rolo to be a part of his team as he RUNS the offense – maybe as a QB coach? but why, when JJ was a QB.

I can see Coach Mack going over to be the DC.

whenever a door closes it is an opportunity to open another.

  89. al December 7, 2011 9:24 am

    darren…lunch one day.

  90. Darren December 7, 2011 9:24 am

#86…that’s freakin’ hilarious. How do you define “excessively”??

  91. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 9:25 am

Professionally, I had a good working relationship with McMackin. Nice guy, very accessible, and he tried to do the right things.

But it’s hard to overlook his salary. After The Advertiser was sold, many co-workers were worried about losing their houses. It’s hard to relate to someone who bought two houses in Hawaii and two in Las Vegas. Again, not his fault, and praise to anyone who can be comfortable in these difficult times, but it’s still hard to relate.

  92. al December 7, 2011 9:25 am

i heard that rolo had an open invitation.

  94. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 9:27 am

Hey Weber State football fans, look who was introduced as the new head coach.

None other than John L. Smith.

    http://www.abc4.com/content/news/slc/story/John-L-Smith-introduced-as-Weber-State-head-coach/I–1Gx6sG0OfP7O49rXnUQ.cspx

  95. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 9:29 am

The new head coach has to have enough connections in the coaching arena to be able to quickly and effectively replace those around him whenever the need arises. Mack brought in Aranda, Rolo, Shaw, Tuioti, etc.

  96. A-House December 7, 2011 9:29 am

If it was all about $$$ for UH, why punish a person because your predecessors were just dummies!!!!! It’s like the NCAA punishing the UH mvb team because they wanted to send a message to the BCS schools who were using players in other sports who had “professional” experience.

Coach Mack’s attorney did a great job in creating or help to create contract conditions; give him the credit and pour “whatever you want” on the past UH President.

    I am a Libra!

I see, thought you meant Rich Miano had something to do with Coach Mack’s being replaced. As far as the TV interviews Miano has given it could rub people both ways. I like his enthusiasm. A head coach needs to sell himself to the fans. A head coach needs to sell recruits to the program. A head coach plainly needs to be a good salesman. I can see where that could bother some people.

JJ to ASU . . . Can’t say that I am surprised that JJ went against his word again. Just last week ST mentioned that he spoke to JJ and he said he wasn’t going anywhere. Pulled a Hawaii all over again. Can’t blame him though. I’ll be glad to watch him in the Pac 12

  116. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 9:39 am

One of the good things about being the interim during the interim is that if you want the job, you can sell the glory and gold that the future may hold under your leadership.

Those that get thrown into it during the season have a tougher sell if it doesn’t go right. Luke Fickell, Russ Pennell, Tom Bradley, tough positions to be in.

  117. Kevin December 7, 2011 9:40 am

Rob Akey has a crappy record at Idaho.

Wonder how he’d with our resources????

Byt I love the guy’s public personality. OHHHHHHH YEAH!!!!! 😆

And NO Im not endorsing him as a candidate.

  118. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 9:40 am

    Old Diver…

I suppose if you put these negatives of this season together..

Miano and Coach Mack had a falling out

    Defensive backfield unusually porous

    Lost games we shouldn’t have

    Point shaving letter

Miano appears to be the only one smiling when Coach Mack’s retirement announced.

Miano seemingly abundantly energized by this opportunity.

You could conjecture the worst, if you wanted to…

  119. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 9:40 am

What are Lumpkin’s duties in all of this.

  120. Couch potato December 7, 2011 9:41 am

  122. Kevin December 7, 2011 9:42 am

    UH’s price range?

  123. Couch potato December 7, 2011 9:42 am

  125. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 9:43 am

Has Miano ever been offered a lucrative position as a coach elsewhere?

  126. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 9:43 am

Good to hear the coaches are hitting the trail hard. I’d think the kids would want to know who they will be playing for, before committing though.

Interesting that Coach Jones will be heading to ASU.

  127. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 9:44 am

Dykes and Andersen aren’t coming here.

    They have higher aspirations.

  128. 808Bowler December 7, 2011 9:44 am

Jj to me is a fixer upper. Fixes programs and leaves. Not ingested in winning championships. Don’t like the guy but he is good at it.

  129. FattyMcButterpants December 7, 2011 9:44 am

Wonder if SMU will turn it over to Dan Morrison?

Really want someone energetic, fiery and passionate as UH’s next Big Kahuna.

  130. Garret December 7, 2011 9:45 am

Coach Jones gets you to the promised land…then rides off into the sunset. Uhhh, what just happened?? Now folks in Dallas know how those in Honolulu felt. And the timing of it all as SMU is being announced into a BCS (for now) conference this afternoon…

    Should SMU really be upset?

0 bowl games in something like 25 years…3 bowl games in a row now.

CUSA to the Big East for *all sports*, which means a HUGE upgrade for their basketball teams and millions more for their Athletic Department. SDSU says that the minimum that they will get is $6.4 mil for football only, where the Big East gets paid more for basketball so their TV money will go from $1.3 mil to ~$15 mil per year. The Big East cannot take the invitation back now since things are too far along.

If you look at it in a strict dollars-and-cents point of view, SMU got a *huge* return on their investment with JJ.

If SMU had hired a coach in lesser demand, their Athletic Department would have had to pay his entire ~$1 mil salary. By hiring JJ, donors paid his entire salary so JJ cost them NOTHING.

The past few recruiting classes have stocked SMU and they redshirted a lot of players this year. Their current recruiting class is probably going to fall apart though–they had the top non-AQ recruiting class and the #3 recruiting class in what is the new Big East…but so many of their players are now switching to Arizona State.

So, SMU paid *nothing* to have JJ take them to 3 straight bowls games and now they will earn $14 mil/year more in TV money about get 5x the NCAA basketball money as a part of the Big East.

  131. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 9:45 am

Yeah, Kevin. I asked yesterday. I hope UH is sending out invitations and not just waiting for applications to come in.

  132. cheepono December 7, 2011 9:45 am

if mike martz is really interested in the UH gig, then i’d be down for a JJv2 (former NFL coach/offensive guy)

  135. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 9:46 am

If Tomey has the energy and desire, make him the recruiting coordinator if the new regime does not have a place for him on the sidelines.

I think he would be excellent in that position. He has nationwide connections having been the President of the coaches association.

He can still give motivational speeches to our players and potential recruits.

  136. primo123 December 7, 2011 9:46 am

  137. Buffoman December 7, 2011 9:46 am

That would work, especially if the o minded HC saw that a strong D could be a weapon. In other words, never let “mo” swing to the opponent. That prevent defense stuff only prevents one from holding on to “mo” and bettering one’s chances for victory.

Yep, get that USC guy that was on yesterday’s blob over here (good to dream) and have that O coordinator from Oregon as the HC. Dreaming again, better get up, no more kala to afford such dreams.

  138. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 9:47 am

    Kevin,

The answer to #125 may say a lot.

  139. Garret December 7, 2011 9:48 am

When Baylor hired Houston’s previous coach, one of the recruits that had been committed to Houston and went to Baylor instead was Robert Griffin III…that turned out pretty well for Baylor and RGIII.

When SMU hired JJ from UH, he took Bo Levi Mitchell…that turned out pretty well for UH.

  140. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 9:49 am

Off topic… “Cheaters” just came on, on tv. Didn’t even know that show was still on! Hahaha!

And now, back to your regular program…

  141. koakane December 7, 2011 9:49 am

    d1 #113?????????????????????????

    also check email

  142. Buffoman December 7, 2011 9:50 am

I agree with Garret on JJ. If they had a lesser guy running the show, Big East would not be considering SMU. He turned them around and got them noticed enough to put them in position for a bigger pay day.

  143. Garret December 7, 2011 9:50 am

JJ has 2 4-star QB commits (1 for this class and 1 for next year’s class) and a 5-star QB transfer (Gilbert)…if they all go to Arizona State their QB position will be stocked.

  144. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 9:53 am

So, are McMackin’s properties in Hawaii listed for sale already? If so, since when?

  145. Garret December 7, 2011 9:53 am

One interesting thing is that SMU has 21 commits and Arizona State has 23 commits…some SMU commits aren’t going to be invited to Arizona State and some Arizona State commits will be encouraged to go elsewhere. I’m assuming that they will make room for the 4-star commits, but almost all of the other commits are 3-stars so there will be 15-20 3-star commits that will be needing to look for other schools now.

If UH had been coming off the success of last season, UH would be in position to scoop up all of those 3-star commits from California that need to find another school now. Timing $#@%.

  146. Don Weir December 7, 2011 9:53 am

    Duffer (from yesterday)

Albert Holmes was a teammate and he was one smooth running back. Neither tremendous power nor quick slashing moves but Albert flowed to openings and then headed north or south for the yards.

    #72 Darren

If you go back a few years and look at several DB’s I think you would find several greats such as teammates Hal Stringert, Jeris White, John Duckworth, Tim Lyon, and one name that escapes me (I’m older now I guess) that we called the Hulk (out of Bakersfield).

  147. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 9:54 am

I remember when Martz came to Detroit a few years ago, to be the OC. They only won a couple of games that first year, and he was fired the following year when they failed to make the playoffs.

  148. Don Weir December 7, 2011 9:54 am

    Tom Mui

You want to contact Al, Garrett, Robert, ST, et al and set this up?

  149. Garret December 7, 2011 9:56 am

The funny and sad thing is that SMU had its biggest recruiting weekend in 25+ years this past weekend and it will turn out to be one of the biggest recruiting weekends ever for Arizona State. Gabriel Marks is a stud recruit out of California and he says that they will all go where JJ goes.

  150. Da Punchbowl Kid December 7, 2011 9:56 am

That’s what Aunt Miriam sez, anyway.

  151. A-House December 7, 2011 9:57 am

It would be a huge mistake if UH hires a “well known” coach – big bucks and 4 or 5 years and gone then start all over again.

Why would a “well known” coach want to be HC at UH?

  152. Darren December 7, 2011 10:02 am

#147…Don Weir, no disrespect was meant for any of our past great corners. Stringert and Jeris White push back to my earliest memories of UH football. Dana McLemore was another great one that came through our program. Guess my point was that guys like these don’t come along often in our program…better appreciate them while they’re here.

  153. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 10:02 am

    A-House,

    #152

UH won’t hire a “well known” coach for big bucks. The list below is of coaches who are semi-known and presumably *affordable*.

Some of them have lots of experience, been successful OC/DC, known recruiters in Hawaii/Cali/West, some kind of connection to the State etc.

It may be a matter of reaching out to them and seeing if they have any interest.

    Duane Akina ($400,000 @ Texas)

    Brian Norwood ($350,000 @ Baylor)

    Robert Anae ($150,000-$200,000 @)

Mark Banker ($350,000 @ Oregon State)

    Dino Babers (<$350,000 @ Baylor)

  154. 808Bowler December 7, 2011 10:02 am

Oc for Baylor would be intresting.

  155. al December 7, 2011 10:08 am

  159. tommui December 7, 2011 10:10 am

No man, when he has lighted a candle, puts it in a secret place, neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they which come in may see the light. …

So I can see where Miano is coming from.

This statement is not an endorsement but something to consider when anyone yells out “choose me, choose me”

Used to do it in grade school when players for whatever were being picked.

  160. Kevin December 7, 2011 10:11 am

I’m assuming all those salaries are coordinator or positional coaching salaries…

Someone like Akina will want to be a HC for maybe only 200-300K more????

  161. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 10:12 am

Does any of the potential HC at UH have families? I know its more expensive to live her but, what a place to raise a family.

  162. tommui December 7, 2011 10:12 am

DON WEIR #149 – I passed the honor to AL who has/or will do so.

  163. eagle December 7, 2011 10:12 am

  168. iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 10:16 am

    Kevin,

Yes those salaries are what the currently make. I don’t know if Akina would jump for $700,000+incentives especially when Texas tried hard to get him to come back.

The others at $350,000 or less may be more likely to.

  169. Couch potato December 7, 2011 10:16 am

  174. eagle December 7, 2011 10:22 am

Tom — agree that those who have the strongest desire, and the willingness to shout ‘i do want the job!’ must be considered [High Level of Commitment — or self-sales skill or both]…

The humble, quiet men who operate away from the glare of bright lights are often among the best (JJ, Mack, Tomey, Wagner) …

although to build fan and student recognition, dollars in coffers and butts in seats, e-skills and front-man speaking/sales skills out are going to be needed …

If a Coach cannot sell himself, he’ll not likely be able to sell the program …

  175. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 10:23 am

I was suprised that June Jones stayed as long as he did in Hawaii. Throughout his college playing days and coaching days, including the professional ranks, he never really stayed too long at one place.

  176. Couch potato December 7, 2011 10:27 am

the uh coaches are going to be asked some tough questions while they are out recruiting. especially when they can’t say with 100% certainty the offense and defense they will be running and who the staff will be in a few weeks.

of course it will be all moot if it is already written that the new warrior hc is from within.

  177. Slugger December 7, 2011 10:28 am

  180. koakane December 7, 2011 10:32 am

IMHO the fball program needs to move onto the next level by bringing in 3/+ stars recruits at least home and away, to win on a constant basis to be in the conference top tier, to get assistants to teach their position with passion (aka coach Cav) and to build a strong local relationships to improve facilities.

afterall, he don’t need the money.

he could pick and choose his next employment if he chooses so.

my guess is that jj has his own people now.

  185. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 10:48 am

    Na Koa Endowment.

Any tsaiko’s looking for a year end tax write off to a registered 501 C 3? Looking to support UH Football in the future?

A donation to the Na Koa Endowment is tax deductible and will help generate income for the UH Football program in the years to come.

We are currently searching for a venue to host a Letterwinners reception on the Friday before the USC game. Mahalos PolyMom for helping out on this.

We will wait a bit to see where, or if, the SDSU game takes place before getting into the planning stage in SAN

    MIH

I respect your views on Miano. I happen to disagree. I would hate to see our present coaches nailed to a cross because someone wants an outside hire. Why does Rolo get a pass because there was talk of micromanaging but the rest of the assistants need to man up for their faults. My choice is Miano unless someone better actually applies.

  194. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 11:30 am

UH President’s house is just sitting there empty. How about make it into a dorm for the football team? Ah, maybe too far from lower campus.

  195. kev-1 December 7, 2011 11:35 am

    Animal House????

  196. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 11:36 am

Mike Sewak. Could be that one coach from the state of Georgia that has shown interest.

  197. Not an Expert December 7, 2011 11:36 am

It looks quite obvious that the new head coach is Miano unless a big name coach will want to come for minimal salary to bask in the sun’s glory.

Why would the current coaches be recruiting and have the hardest time to answer one question. Are you going to be coaching at UH next year? If the answer is I don’t know than they truly are warriors. Their love for the school and Hawaii working to the end and hoping for the best.

  198. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 11:36 am

Kev-1: I can see the keg being thrown from the second floor 🙂

The reporting by ST is very professional. I do not know him personally but when one reads how he reports and state things, No Ka Oi.

  200. Not an Expert December 7, 2011 11:42 am

Looking back at the end of 2007, UH was at the doorsteps really the foyer of getting to the next level. Instead of going forward with greater strides it appears we were sent back out to the yard.

When the next opportunity to get to the next level comes the leaders need to make every effort to get in and stay in. We don’t get too many opportunities being out in the middle of the Pacific.

  201. A-House December 7, 2011 11:48 am

Speculation is driving a 10,000 ton engine that is out of control.

  204. Not an Expert December 7, 2011 11:54 am

According to AZcentral.com at 2:15 p.m. no agreement has been reached with JJ. There appears to be some snags and JJ asked his staff back to Dallas.

  207. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 12:05 pm

Didn’t realize that Robert Anae has more than just deep recruiting ties to Kahuku.

He is a Kahuku alumn and his father Famika Anae was Kahuku footballs long time coach.

Wouldnt mind seeing an even bigger Kahuku pipeline established. 🙂

  208. kkv3000 December 7, 2011 12:08 pm

It seems according to espn that ASU might be pulling back their offer to JJ. According to espn JJ called his staff home yesterday and met with them this morning to tell them he was taking the ASU job and the deal was 95% done. ASU AD got negative feedback from influential boosters and may be pulling the offer. Interesting, SMU can’t be happy!

  209. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 12:15 pm

Off topic: I saw Tom Berg on tv. He looks like the villian on Shaft. The one with Samuel Jackson. No not Peeples. The other villian. And do you know why they call him Peeples? Cause he always takes care of his people.

  210. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 12:18 pm

I’m sure SMU boosters aren’t happy with the JJ situation. And they have some very BIG TIME boosters. Just ask Craig James.

  211. A-House December 7, 2011 12:18 pm

I do not worry about UH football because the world will end on 12/21/2012 – accoridng to the Mayan calendar!

em, Alfred E Newman, “what me worry”?

  212. Wassup December 7, 2011 12:19 pm

#209. I know of a school that would be welcoming to him.

  213. Warrior Dave December 7, 2011 12:23 pm

Agree that SMU is not happy. How can JJ go back now. Opens the door to come back to UH as I predicted when he left.

  214. Wassup December 7, 2011 12:26 pm

#214. Watch out what you say, a poster may tell to take your delirium pills.. Hahaha

    Hope he comes back home…

  215. Pomai December 7, 2011 12:27 pm

Nothing wrong with tooting your own horn. Also like his action right now. Would he make a good HC I don’t know and neither does anyone else here know. As someone before said it’s a crap shoot, even with someone like JJ it was. All I know is that I will be getting my season tickets and be at all the tailgates and games God willing.

  216. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 12:28 pm

Influential boosters. Can’t live with em, can’t live without em.

LSU coach Les Miles told a story about when he was the HC at Oklahoma State. After one too many cancelled practices because of inclement weather, Miles went to T. Boone Pickens about possibly funding the building of an indoor practice facility. Pickens said no because he wanted to put his money into the stadium renovations. Miles walked away feeling that Pickens was calling the shots on running the football program which set the wheels on him looking elsewhere to coach.

  217. Warrior Dave December 7, 2011 12:30 pm

ASU administration is so screwed up. Boosters saying no since Saturday but still they negotiate with him to agree in principal. Then they Charlie Brown him when he’s ready to kick the ball.

Not a good reflection on the school.

  218. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 12:34 pm

Looks like it’s official – ASU has pulled the offer to June Jones. School president said it took too long, but more likely influential boosters objected to the selection.

    http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/7327205/arizona-state-sun-devils-pull-coaching-offer-smu-mustangs-june-jones-sources-say

  219. Pomai December 7, 2011 12:36 pm

Wouldn’t that be a kick in the arse, ASU and SMU don’t want him and he applies for the UH job…..LOL

  220. anklebiters December 7, 2011 12:41 pm

As the world turns, again…….major backlash from donors and background questions has led ASU to look at other alternatives other than Jones. Donors have quite a pull here it seems and ASU is making a mess out of the hiring if what has been reported is true.

  221. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 12:43 pm

I wonder what about him they don’t like.

  222. Pomai December 7, 2011 12:43 pm

It would be a large kick if UH hired JJ and he brought Mack in as DC LOL

  223. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 12:44 pm

Funny line: Many ASU boosters felt that June Jones was Dennis Erickson 2.0. They want to go with a younger, new face to lead the program instead of an older coach.

  224. Musashi December 7, 2011 12:44 pm

Re: #220, Yup Pomai, reading the SMU boards it looks like they’re pretty ticked at JJ right now too . . .

  225. Pomai December 7, 2011 12:44 pm

IWWTHM – could be that he does things his way and the boosters don’t like that..

  226. Iwonderwhytheyhateme December 7, 2011 12:44 pm

If a donor is dishing out big bucks, they probably have a say.

    No different here in Hawaii.

  227. Wassup December 7, 2011 12:45 pm

    Merry Christmas?

  228. Pomai December 7, 2011 12:46 pm

    GazetteAirForce Frank Schwab

Lt. Gen. Mike Gould tells The Gazette that Air Force will officially remain in the Mountain West.

I’ll be writing more as we go on Gould’s thoughts, but he stressed loyalty, integrity, regional rivalries and the academy’s mission.

    GazetteAirForce Frank Schwab

Gould also said there is the possibility to rework the television deal to get MW teams more money. He and Craig Thompson met w/ CBS this wk.

  236. Pomai December 7, 2011 12:57 pm

  237. easybruddah December 7, 2011 12:58 pm

I hope JD is on the phone right now making JJ an offer! Stranger things have happened….and most times there IS a reason why things happen at the right time….

  238. 808Fringe December 7, 2011 12:59 pm

LOL! WOW! Looks like JJ is screwed either way. No can go back to SMU now after you shafted ’em for a team that said, NO CAN TOO!! Funny as hell!! Wonder if JD gonna call him…NOT!

  239. Dan-O December 7, 2011 12:59 pm

Darren……good to see in this day and age of greed, that someone has some integrity (and balls) to say NO.

Then again, its refreshing that it comes from the institution that provides the future leaders that protect our country.

  243. easybruddah December 7, 2011 1:02 pm

Not if SMU forces him to resign.

  244. primo123 December 7, 2011 1:07 pm

  246. primo123 December 7, 2011 1:08 pm

maybe….SMU so pissed at JJ, they just retire is ass…..no buyout no nothing…..

    JJ = unemployed gunslinger……….

    maybe maybe…………

  247. rich2176 December 7, 2011 1:10 pm

Didn’t June sign a two-year extension through the 2014 season? What gives?

BTW – thanks to #102. That contract language for Mack is pretty weak. I’ve got lots of comments, but the bottom line is that if Mack leaves early, he OWES UH $550k. If UH terminates him without cause (fires him), he’s owed the balance of his contract, and if he’s terminated with cause (I.e, NCAA violations, etc.), he’s owed nothing.

There’s nothing about “early retirement”, so that would come under the category of him leaving early. The way the contract is written, he would owe UH $550K after taxes. The way this “retirement” is being stated, he was given his $1.1m for next year, but UH is gonna withhold $500k. Nothing in this entire scenario is kosher. Bottom line, it’s almost like he was guaranteed $5.5m if he worked 2 seasons or 5 seasons, and if he left early, $550k is “retained” by UH. I only took two semesters of business law, but I read employment contracts quite often and don’t see swiss cheese language like Mack’s contract contains.

  248. primo123 December 7, 2011 1:13 pm

#248 they just added an addendum to the whole thang……and he signed a retirement addendum….must’ve been good. I’m sure he had his attorney check it out first….didnt he use kobayashi guys?….those are some sharp cookies in the jar i hear..

  249. kakaako kid December 7, 2011 1:24 pm

JJ would not be happy or successful returning to UH. Do we really want to be the fallback? Let’s think forward, not backwards. If the run-and-dump continues to be our offense, then Richie is our guy. If we want to move toward the stretch option like everyone else, this is the time to crossover. Mack’s “early” departure provides an opportunity to change/implement. Believe it or not, JD has to look at style of offensive football we will play when selecting a coach. Are we gonna get verbal commits only to say oops? Are any of our recruiters considering pro-style QBs? A tight end? Sounds like Richie (or someone currently on the staff) has JD’s eye.

  250. Old Diver December 7, 2011 1:30 pm

JJ used to complain about the higher admission requirements at UH than our opponents had. Probably got sick of the higher admission requirements at SMU too and decided to move to the Pac-12. Just saying…….

  251. kev-1 December 7, 2011 1:31 pm

That is pretty messed up that Arizona St. did that. What will JJ do now? “Ummm, honey? I know I told you I wanted a divorce because I was in love with another woman, but that didn’t work out and I changed my mind.”

    awkward . . .

  252. Kokokev December 7, 2011 1:34 pm

JJ got too much antsy pants…..now it might be biting him in the okole. You play that game and sooner or later it’ll catch up with you. I’d rather have a coach who wants to stay here….much longer than JJ did the last time.

  253. Old Diver December 7, 2011 1:35 pm

Arizona State University. Isn’t that where Herman Fraizer received his formal athletic director training?

  254. primo123 December 7, 2011 1:41 pm

#255 NEW or used? big difference.

    better yet…post us a picture….

  255. Couch potato December 7, 2011 1:41 pm

Old Diver, if you look at the admission requirements for freshmen at asu, some requirements are more stringent than uh manoa. e.g. asu – top 25% high school graduating class, uh manoa – top 40%. asu – 3.0 cumulative gpa (competency courses), uh manoa – 2.8 cumulative gpa.

  256. primo123 December 7, 2011 1:41 pm

For ALL that wants JJ back….stop living in the past….he had his down side too.

  265. KeleguenBinadu December 7, 2011 1:51 pm

I still want to learn more about who really is applying besides Miano. We can speculate who we want or who makes sense. The more important thing is, ‘who wants the job?’ So far, I’ve only heard Miano say so.

In regards to JJ, I would like him back. If ASU boosters didn’t like him, and SMU are pissed at him and may no longer like him, he’ll be welcome here, I think a lot of fans of Hawaii want him back.

  266. Couch potato December 7, 2011 1:55 pm

no matter, his career is pau so any agent could gift him.

  267. Buffoman December 7, 2011 1:56 pm

    #254 too funny!

Look at it this way, if JJ does for some reason goes to the fall back, and comes back here, he’ll stay and end his career here.

And, if I read the blogs correctly some of those 4 and 5 star recruits would go/come with him.

Someone made mention that it was Wags that made Tomey’s defense what it was. As I recall in those early year it was not Wags (or Ellison) who was the D coordinator. There was another guy and HE made that defense really fire. Can’t remember his name, sorry, maybe Mr. Wier can help.

  268. rico December 7, 2011 1:56 pm

i think Miano is the BEST choice.

  269. 808Fringe December 7, 2011 1:59 pm

Wonder if JJ would go to UCLA? They’re still looking for a coach right? As much as I liked him when he was here, no Thanks! Time to move on. Turn the page or get a new book for that matter.

Next to recruiting season, the anticipation of who the new coach would be is the next best thing!

  270. Old Diver December 7, 2011 2:00 pm

    #257

Sorry I didn’t make myself clear. I meant the admission requirements for athletes. Most PAC-12 schools can make admission exceptions, UH cannot.

  271. Haleakala December 7, 2011 2:06 pm

JJ will probably have to leave SMU after this screwup by ASU. But there are many schools looking for head coaches and he will find another position that suits him.

  272. Da Punchbowl Kid December 7, 2011 2:06 pm

    266 –

The Lord do what he wants. He don’t care about no Sun Devils. Besides, I’m not really talking bout the SDs in this instance. Its just weird how that played out…

  273. Kokokev December 7, 2011 2:08 pm

    #269

4 & 5 star players might follow JJ here but that’s a big ocean and alot of miles from home…..not like livin on the continent. JJ was a time and place here….a chapter in both his and UH’s life. I don’t think going back is going forward. The right HC is out there but I doubt that it’s JJ

  274. RedZone December 7, 2011 2:08 pm

Lyndell Jones was one of my favorite corners.

JJ could make it back in time for the elections.

I would take him back. I thought we gave 2nd chances?

  275. RedZone December 7, 2011 2:09 pm

    JJ still could go pro.

  276. Couch potato December 7, 2011 2:16 pm

    Garret

Bo Levi Mitchell may have lost his job at SMU, but he did win a national championship last year and this year came a whole lot closer to beating a decent UDub team than our guys did. Had he ended up at UH he may very well have been a three or four year starter.

  290. cocobean December 7, 2011 2:37 pm

#255. What year vette? If this is regards to the infamous anonymous letter, the same guy sent another letter to the UH admissions office retracting his accusations of players being involved. He said it was his mistake. He says that it was actually some coaches who were involved.

  291. SteveM December 7, 2011 2:37 pm

    JJ back to Hawaii?

Hmmm…. Many believe he did not leave for SMU just because of money…more to effect change in Hawaii and take the challenge of bringing another downtrodden team to national prominence with his Run & Shoot offense.

He did not come to Hawaii in the first place for the money, leaving millions on the table in the pros.

    Get chance? Hey…could happen!

Coming back to Hawaii will put an exclamation point on the “not for money” future History of June Jones.

  292. Couch potato December 7, 2011 2:37 pm

the mayan calendar was mentioned so i took a look at it and came to the conclusion that the world is not going to end in 12/2012. the mayans lived in cycles, one cycle is ending and another is beginning. so no worries, 12/2012 is just a new beginning. 🙂

  293. Ipu Man December 7, 2011 2:37 pm

It sounds like you like to go with a younger guy…

    Can understand that…

    Or ru Rich Miano’s mother?

  294. expat December 7, 2011 2:38 pm

June Jones’ contract expired and he took a new one at a different institution. You can quibble about the exact timing… But he did not walk out on UH…

There isn’t much bio info available but my recollection is that Dan the Man Morrison played for UCLA. That goes back a ways though– I had him for freshman social studies in high school. He would be an interesting candidate for HC. He was a successful HS coach at both iolani and Punahou if memory serves and has had good success in coaching QBs since 1999. Doubt he would be interested though.

  295. Ipu Man December 7, 2011 2:39 pm

    :>) :>) :>) Kokokev

  296. cocobean December 7, 2011 2:40 pm

  297. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 2:44 pm

    Expat:

    I like Morrison.

When he coached at Punahou, he used to always call people: “Hombre.”

And then he got to UH, and stopped that.

  298. Stephen Tsai December 7, 2011 2:44 pm

    Mayans

    Hmmm. Whatever happened to them?

That’s right. They all died off.

  299. cocobean December 7, 2011 2:45 pm

JJ is a good coach. What might rub a lot of people the wrong way about him can partly be summed up by a question once posed about him.

On a scale of 1-10. How would you rate JJ’s ego?

  300. Kokokev December 7, 2011 2:45 pm

Age is not the most important factor…. I have no recommendations as to who the HC should be and boom not a Miano guy either…..just want to shake all the trees and see what falls out…..keeping all options open for the best decision to be made. Sometimes you fly a name out there and get the bandwagon going….you might disillusion prospective coaches to show interest in the position….

  301. Kokokev December 7, 2011 2:51 pm

    Brah……smallkine childish….but no matter.

  303. kakaako kid December 7, 2011 2:53 pm

JJ will return to SMU. Just as we wanted him back then (and now), wins forgive indiscretion. Even SMU understands his pursuit of a legit BCS conference. What kills me is considering Tomey and Davis as good for the program. Recruits are tweeting, while these guys are licking stamps (or morse code). Do you really think players can relate to these guys? The next coach should clean out the majority of the coaching staff. We need new coaches that we can develop into future head coaches. We will revisit this scenerio sooner than later. When we look at the current staff, not many choices as successors. This is a sad scenerio and speaks to the need for a great staff rather than a good coach. My the next coach move us forward.

    ISN’T Miano a MAYAN name?? hmmmmmmm….

  318. bigislandkurt December 7, 2011 3:11 pm

Why don’t my na’au trust Miano?

I guess over the years, I’ve just never been “wowed” by him as a coach. I loved him as a player and followed him all throughout his NFL days. Wasn’t he our DC under JJ at one time? And if he was, I remember our defense really sucking under JJ. They only times we fared well was when Glaneville and Mac were around.

I’m trying to like the possibility of Miano, but the things I like (continuity, possibility of seeing the RnS again, retaining some of the current coaches) are far from the actual person named Miano. If he gets the job, I’ll support him because I’m a warrior fan. But my gut is not feeling good about this one. I wonder if all the other coaches are behind this possibility?

Christianity’s control of the history books would like for us to believe that native peoples like the great Maya and Taino actually disappeared. No, our great civilizations were robbed and dismantled in the name of the conquistadors and the empires they represented. The men were enslaved and women were raped which then created a new race called latinos and “hispanics.” Trust me my friends, we are still around. WE have not died off. And we are quite proud of our native blood.

hasn’t been brought up too often if at all…let’s consider the oc rolovich for a moment.

is a very active and great recruiter.

has embraced his alma mater, the state of hawaii, and its culture.

knows this run n shoot as well as anyone in the nation having played in the system and coached it.

has a playbook that has been kept under wraps by the conservative exiting headcoach that would just explode on the gridiron.

knows what it takes to get to the next level having been in several nfl camps, nfl europe, and arena football.

is bright, articulate, and a great communicator.

can bridge the gap with the local community, student/athletes, and the mainland.

is well respected by his peers and players.

would take the job at 400K per year.

    is a great public speaker.

will ensure proper discipline from his staff and players is achieved.

would double as the oc thus providing for another coaching position.

did i say is a successful recruiter.

would maintain perhaps a third of the existing staff and strengthen it with some new blood.

    is humble in public.

will expect a lot from his staff and team.

will have the respect of the team and supporters.

has great new ideas for the future of hawaii football.

  362. Kevin December 7, 2011 3:49 pm

If there is one thing similar about the JJ and Mack head coaching regime, it’s that there was never a consistent period of CONSISTENT play and performance in the 3 phases of a football game.

    OFFENSE, DEFENSE, and SPECIAL TEAMS.

Chad Owens was a beast, Matt McBriar is an NFL icon between the pipes, John Hardy-Tuliau is Mr. Right Place and Right Time, and Dan Kelly had epic moments. But in the whole BODY of work, was special teams a solid CONSISTENT aspect of our game over the past 13 seasons? Special teams overall declined big time under Mack, but even under JJ was it CONSISTENT???

Defense was a big problem under JJ. Admit it. Mack as DC helped bring two WAC titles and a Sugar Bowl. But we were notorious for getting chewed up on the ground under JJ. Again CONSISTENT???

Offense was the cornerstone of JJ’s tenure and suffered under Mack. Simple as that.

JJ’s teams had better overall results, but there were deficiencies in the areas of defense and special teams that cost us.

Mack’s teams had many many things to be concerned about, more than JJ’s teams.

BUT both were never consistent in ALL THREE PHASES OF THE GAME.

13 years of that and I think UH football needs a make-over and doesn’t need to fall back on familiar faces.

  363. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 3:53 pm

  375. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 4:14 pm

I still don’t see what Coach Rolo brought. We ran the same plays for two straight years. I don’t even recall a single trick play. Offense did well last year when both Pilares and Salas were in. Got tons of YAC with them. Vanilla this year. Even in our basic plays, we didn’t do much.

I hope a couple of key coaches are kept for continuity’s sake. But it just seems our version of the RnS has run it’s course, and we need to move on.

Just my opinion, so don’t send the Conquistadors after me.

  376. wafan December 7, 2011 4:15 pm

Agreed. After what Mr. Tsai reported about Jones saying he already had a contract and a job, and a two year extention, why would he attempt to run to ASU? Was the prospect of the long distance travel a bit much? Was ASU offering that much more than SMU?

Maybe it really was the golf.

These sports have new head coaches:

Mens and women’s basketball Men’s volleyball Wahine Soccer Wahine Water Polo

Gib Arnold and Charlie Wade and injected their programs with tremendous energy. Both have shown drastic improvements in the overall production of their programs with Arnold yielding a 19 game win season and Charlie Wade returned the volleyball program to the MPSF playoffs as well as both seeing an increase in attendance and fanfare, most visible and nostalgic is with the Warrior volleyball program where the Bozo’s V 2.0 is starting to slowly emerge with the heavy involvement of students and student-athletes dressing up and making their presence known.

Michelle Nagamine started out rough but finished well in the WAC also returning her program to the WAC tournament. Notably upsetting heavy favorite Utah State at home during the WAC reg season.

Three coaches have shown they have improved the on court/field product early on thus far.

Dana Takahara-Dias has had two back to back losing seasons with early exits in the WAC tournement. While there was a significant increase in paid attendance and turnstile figures these past two years, she has struggled to present a consistent product so far. I believe they only have one win against a D1 opponent this season so far.

Wahine Waterpolo is a spring sport so cannot say. They will have A LOT to live up to considering their past reputation and success.

  394. al December 7, 2011 4:32 pm

376…not sending the conquistadors after you. but, perception by many would be exactly as you have seen. however, those close to the situation will tell you this much.

first, rolo has been kept under wraps by mack these years. the conservative play calling can be attributed to the hc as he often would press the over ride button.

second, this year more evident than last year(still a problem) is the fact that our oline gave our qb’s less than 2.5 seconds to unload the ball. therefore, the qb had to look for the quick and conservative five yard pattern. our qb’s spent more time on their backs than they did in bed. they got chased, sacked, hit, and finally even got a broken foot for that. you could hang that on improper techniques being taught for the past four years as well as lack of recruiting depth.

third, it is easy to blame the qb for int’s or the oc for this and that. understood. but without the proper protection even joe montana to dwight clark could not have saved us this year. to blame the play calller for poor results is proper if the oline was stout, however, not so. in this case as well, it was the hc who too often with the help of others in his ear would change the play thus change the game plan that was prepared all week long.

fourth, rolo had very little help from the wr coach who has alread packed his bags and left dodge. i hope he is on leave without pay.

all things considered, rolo was working with his hands tied behind his back. two of them have retired already and the other will soon be in minnesota again.

rolo now understands what ron lee went through during his tenure with this same regime and why he ultimately threw down his headsets one game in disgust. credit rolo that at least he stuck it out these past two years.

    …nuff said.

One way to give quarterbacks more time is to have them

drop back longer in the pocket. This forces the defensive

end rushers to rush deep. Then the qb avoids them by

moving up towards the line of scrimmage and throws his pass…

    UH SEARCH ADVISORY Committee

    Rockne Freitas

    Peter Ho

    Bert Kobayashi

    Dwaine Kurisu

    Edison Miyawaki

    Jean Rolles

These people are NOT selecting the new coach but are screening the applicants and then ranking them as part of their recommendations.

The Selection Committee itself will be announced shortly. They are the ones who will actually make the selection.

Why these people – except for Rockne Freitas – with no serious experience in playing intercollegiate, let alone professional sports? ANSWER: Their general as well as sports business backgrounds, their communications backgrounds, their financial & political connnections to Hawai`i – das why.

Meanwhile, let’s practice our yelling skills for this Friday’s NCAA Sweet Sixteen face-off between USC and UH.

More food for thought….an embarrassment for ASU for the way they have conducted their search so far…this type of nonsense needs to stop.

The fallout from the June Jones-Arizona State saga continues to surface.

Leigh Steinberg, who represents the SMU coach, wrote the following in a brief blog post:

Just had one of the most bizarre endings to a set of productive discussions to bring a client to a new situation. Everything was set,few tweaks left, and the principal decision maker yanks the deal w no real explanation.

This came out about 90 minutes after news broke that Arizona State had pulled their offer to the coach when it been reported by several sources that the deal was nearly done.

Later on, Steinberg posted again, obviously frustrated with what was being said about his client in the aftermath of the ASU situation crumbling:

June Jones character is impeccable and unimpeachable, has done charitable & community, active & spiritual Christian faith. For any institution to try and scorch the earth by impugning man of honor is despicable—cowardly leaks.

The Mayan people are alive and well in Central America. I saw them on a cruise through the Panama Canal with a stopover in Guatamala. The are short people with most of the women well under 5′ tall and the men probably average about 5’2″ or so. I think at one time, the world’s shortest woman came from there. I saw her, her daughter, and grand daughter. She is an older woman and is around 3′ tall. Daughter is a little taller, around 4′.

One thing Big East commissioner Marinatto said in today’s conference call with the press is that the 27-month notification period to leave the Big East only applies to current members, not incoming ones. Boise State and the other newbies would only need to pay a cash penalty if they changed their minds before joining on July 1, 2013 (similar to TCU). A lot can happen between now and then.

Just a couple weeks ago, I taught my Stats kids about voluntary response sampling and how it is a biased sampling method. 😀

San Diego State in the Big East? Sure, why not. Every day college football seems a little more ridiculous. I’m so disappointed in the WAC, the MWC and our own leadership.

I’m more worried about the conference situation than the coaching situation. Bachi maybe for bailing on the WAC. Maybe it is time to go independent? Whore out for a couple of big paydays and hope we can get into our own bowl game.

  436. WarriorMojo December 7, 2011 5:47 pm

I would definitely be in support of Rolo. You want to talk about game management, half time adjustments, going for one versus two PATS, saving or burning timeouts, etc., etc.? All that stuff is second nature to a good OC. It is how they HAVE to think in order to attack.

That is a unique approach to coaching, to thinking. Even other offensive coaches don’t necessarily think that way. There are lots and lots of great O-line coaches who gave completely failed as HCs because they lack that type of thinking.

I think Rolo might be a great pick. Has he/will he apply though?

Campaigning for your choice of head coach is part of the fun of sports talk. The variety of views here is no different at any school. Tainting our assistant coaches with an anonymous letter is unfair. Advocate for your favorite candidate, trashing the other candidates is for the other blog.

  440. WarriorMojo December 7, 2011 5:54 pm

    Re #438

    Exactly.

While other coaches don’t necessarily keep track of down and distance, an OC has to.

  441. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 5:54 pm

    Al, fair enough.

Since he was promoted to OC, all we can see is what’s presented to us via tv crews. We don’t see Coach Mack saying much to Coach Rolo at all. In fact, most times, coach Mack isn’t near Coach Rolo when he’s talking to our QB. I’d venture a guess to the voice in his headset more than anything else.

My concern is that we mostly called the same plays over and over. Nothing creative at all. Some series, we’d constantly go deep and not even be close. We see receivers give up on routes, or be in areas not even close to where the ball went. We’d call plays that seemed we weren’t trying to move the chains to get into any kind of a rhythm. We see a blitz coming, but no hot receiver(s) to go to. As lots of folks wanted to blame the HC, I place these kinds of responsibilities on the OC. Similarly, the DC is responsible for us being out of position, not wrapping up, etc.

We had a few guys on both sides of the ball doing incredible things. But we also had a few that left us scratching our heads time and again.

Then there’s the energy factor. When things get tight, or we need to run hurry up, I don’t see wide-eyed excitement from our OC. I see calm & laid-back. When we fall behind and momentum has gone over to the other side, I see worry. Actions of the leader speak just as loud, if not louder, than words. I see the defense trying to rally troops. I see Graves trying to rally troops.

I can only go off of what I see, and my perception, based on my own experiences.

  442. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 5:56 pm

At least Rolo coached elsewhere before Hawaii.

  449. Old Diver December 7, 2011 6:13 pm

    #395

    al,

Only now I am getting a better picture of what was happening on offense. Just counting fingers it appears the offense was being coached by just two guys on who were on the same page. I can see now why you were so adamant on seeing the program take a new direction. I would like to see Rolo as offensive coordinator get his chance to actually run the R&S his way.

  450. Hilo-Warrior December 7, 2011 6:13 pm

Sorry that would be offer June the Position.

  451. FattyMcButterpants December 7, 2011 6:14 pm

I have no problem with turning the offense over to Rolo, but is he ready to have the whole shebang turned over to him? All the day to day, full team administrative crap that the head coach has to wade through in addition to running the offense? I dunno…

  452. Hilo-Warrior December 7, 2011 6:14 pm

Maybe not a 20% but I think you guys got the hint. Maybe like 3 or 5% percent.

  453. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 6:19 pm

I agree with Old Diver. Let Coach Rolo actually implement what he wants and run the RnS his way. I’ll give him that much of a chance first. I’d love to see tweaks… two RB’s, a TE, some creativity once in a while.

So now, we first wait and see… who will lead us into the next chapter?

  454. Shadow December 7, 2011 6:21 pm

Al (#343!), how you know so much about Rolo? It’s not that apparent when one sees him in tv interviews & the results from the offense this year & in the Vegas game a couple of years ago when the offense couldn’t score from inside the 1yd line in 4 straight downs. (Not doubting you, just asking.)

  455. rage777 December 7, 2011 6:23 pm

The thing that confuses me with Boise State, is this: If they were to go to the Big East next year, that means they haven’t gotten the revenue shares two years in a row. The first year they gave up money from the WAC to go to the MWC. Now if they go to the Big East next year, they would forfeit the money from this year to the MWC. How in the world are they paying the bills? The Big East might still be a BCS conference, but then again maybe not. I don’t think BSU or SDSU will do as good as they think with all the travel.

Not to mention, SDSU and BSU better not be complaining about travel expenses when they go to the Big East like they did with Hawaii.

  456. cocobean December 7, 2011 6:25 pm

    RE: Selrction Committee.

Rockne and the five big donors.

Rockne has more clout than JD. He has Greenwood’s ear, JD does not. He’s the one Greenwood listens to in football matters. I don’t care what his job title is but he’s Greenwoods consigliere when it comes to athletics.

Donors, especially big ones have a lot to say about coaching hires. Ask JJ, he knows.

  457. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 6:25 pm

  459. rage777 December 7, 2011 6:25 pm

    ST,

Do you know what language was in the contract Hawaii signed with the MWC and Big West? I want to know if Hawaii has to pay for SDSU’s travel since they came in later. Does it say Hawaii will subsidize all Big West teams travel, or only those teams that were in the Big West at the time the contract was signed?

  460. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 6:31 pm

Sorry, didn’t mean to blurt it out like that. You can delete it if you must. Just that… most I’ve ever won was maybe fries from the Monopoly game at McDonald’s. 462. Shadow December 7, 2011 6:39 pm

Speaking of Big East, I read that one of the ideas to be discussed at the next BCS is whether to go with the 8-10 highest rated teams regardless of conference affiliation to improve the current bowl selection process & stop the ridiculousness in conference jumping.

  463. Wes'side Warrior December 7, 2011 6:43 pm

If they do that, they still need to limit each conference to the top two teams as reps, and no more, even for at large bids. Otherwise, we’ll soon see only two conferences represented in BCS bowl games.

    RE: Miano.

He’s turning out to be a media darling. At first I it was subtle , now it seems to be full support from most media outlets. Everyone is giving air/face time to plead his case. Most commentator/reporters have positive things to say about him, over achiever, hard working, relentless……..

I’m ambivalent on him. He was way down on my list of current staffers to succeed Mack. Now he’s at the top of my list, ahead of Tuioti who was my top pick. At first I was against picking anyone from the current staff unless there was no other viable option. Now I’m not so sure.

Maybe seeing on TV and listening to him on radio is clouding my judgement. In my head I think it’s better to go outside the program but my heart is telling me he may be the right guy. Says all the right things, projects the energy which Mack seemed to lack.

Chock up another one for the power of the media. It’s beginning to work on me.

What? ST listed the names of the people on the committee already.

You mean you are waiting to hear about prospective candidates right?

  476. Derek December 7, 2011 7:18 pm

Miano was on the sports animals this afternoon. Interesting interview. I got the sense that a few recruits will be making some commitments very soon. I was quite surprising to learn that only 5 coaches were recruiting prior to this. Obviously something is wrong here. Every asst. and the head man should be recruiting, period. That has to change.

Al, interesting comments about the play calling. I thought the offense was not varied enough, that we did not have a special play or plays for each game. I don’t recall seeing a reverse, a halfback pass/option, etc. Personally, I like some deception in plays such as man in motion, read option, reverses, play action passes, misdirection etc. These are very effective of slow the rush, keeps defenses on their toes, and the opponents having to make continual adjustment. Because UH offensive play calling was so stale, by halftime the other team was able to make adjustments and shut us down. So it’s not a surprise that we couldn’t hold a lead. I think Rolovich is a sharp cookie and if givien a more free reign in the play calling you would see the offense open up a little more. That’s one of the things I don’t like about veteran coaches is that they tend to get more conservative. A younger guy is more willing to take risk and is more daring. That’s natural, that’s life. I think Hawaii fans wants a winner, but we also want an exciting brand of football. If so, the fans will come. If you are young you put your money in the stock market or mutual funds. When you get closer to retirement you move the money to money market funds, CDs or bonds for more steady income.

It tends to be colder at night, in my opinion it is because the sun is gone and where it went to is speculation but we have our opinions.

  480. al December 7, 2011 7:27 pm

the play book, rolo’s play book has tight ends, h-backs, two backs, a whole bunch of stuff that was never allowed on the field.

game management is/was managed by the hc.

for me, i’d have gone for it with 35 seconds left in the half and three timeouts to burn. especially after my opponent missed a fg. play to win is always my motto. not play not to turn the ball over or play not to lose.

bury them with another td or at least a fg. use that gimmick play now. the season hinged upon this game. winning this game not playing not to lose.

rolo had the same thoughts i was told.

For those who thinking about “sponsoring” sumboddy one plate lunch.

    Reminder from WassupDoc:

These people are NOT selecting the new coach but are screening the applicants and then ranking them as part of their recommendations.

The Selection Committee itself will be announced shortly. They are the ones who will actually make the selection.

  484. d1shima December 7, 2011 7:36 pm

    Who’s doing the interviews?

  485. PolyMom December 7, 2011 7:45 pm

@al…really you think ROLO can do the job? I dunno…I want a clean and fresh start. I want new people. Let me be honest, Tomey, to old. The kids can not relate. Heck, I want some new blood in town. Rolo needs to go be a head Coach at some big JC school, like Saddle Back, El Camino, anywhere. Let me say this I took a young man who played at Pasadena City College to the San Jose game last year. This kid had Big time numbers. Yet he let him slip away. The game of football has changed. We need a QB who can take the big hits, run and throw the ball. Look how much the NFL has changed???? Mike Vick changed the game. Now you got Tebow who is changing the game. All of the haters are eating their words about Tebow now. Good! I knew he would beat the panty boys like Matt Lineart and even Carson Palmer. You know the weak USC cry babies.

Remember change can be a good thing.

  487. cocobean December 7, 2011 7:52 pm

    #472. Agree.

Just finish watching the L & L Show. Papa gave Miano his unequivacal endorsement. Heard the Animals giving their endorsements. Really think the media is creating a ground swell of support him.

People on the seach and selection committees aren’t immune to the growing sympathy for Miano.

  488. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:00 pm

Well, hell, if that’s the case, just dissolve the search committee and simply give the job to Miano. Everyone seems to be in love with him. Just don’t expect a boost in season tickets come next season. Miano = more of what we saw this season. Didn’t do very well as a defensive coordinator under June Jones, questionable play from the UH secondary during his tenure there, rumblings from players and those close to the program about blatant favoritism by him. I fail to see how his choosing to distance himself from Coach McMackin and what we saw on the field will work in his favor. Only thing working in his favor is that he’ll work for peanuts if hired as the new HC.

Sorry, Miano backers, nothing personal as I’m sure he’s a nice guy. In fact all of the coaches on staff, including McMackin were nice guys. I like nice guys. But it all comes down to Ws and Ls.

  489. wowlaulau December 7, 2011 8:09 pm

#489, so how do you know ” Miano = more of what we saw this season”. I can’t recall when the last time Miano was a head coach….lol

  490. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:11 pm

Have you ever interviewed for a job and realized that you weren’t going to be even considered for the job because the interviewers already had someone else in mind and they were just going through the motions? I hope the selection committee doesn’t give in to any popularity contest from the media or public.

This ground swelling of support for Miano from the media and others in the community is reminiscent of when Norm Chow interviewed for the UH job back in 95. Chow knew that he wouldn’t get the job when he found out that another candidate, Fred (I have Super Bowl rings) von Appen, was staying at then UH Athletic Director Hugh Yoshida’s house when he flew in for the interview. During the interview, Yoshida voiced his displeasure with Chow asking too many questions about the job, and he knew then and there that he didn’t have a chance in getting the job.

  491. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:16 pm

#490: I know what I saw in our defensive secondary this season and season’s past. At least guys like Bob Wagner had a successful record as a coordinator to be considered for the HC job after Tomey left for Arizona. I have no qualms if you like Miano and respect your opinion. I just have a bad feeling about him based on what I’ve seen in our secondary (blown coverages, poor or missed tackles, players being out of position, lack of adjustments, etc.). Being popular and a nice guy doesn’t mean you’re going to be a winning head coach.

  492. Derek December 7, 2011 8:18 pm

Miano was on Leahey and Leahey tonight (taped this morning). Again, nice interview. I like what I hear. He wants the job, but he said if not he still wants to be with the program because Hawaii is his home. If he gets the job, this is what I would say to him as far as personnel.

    1) Yeah, get some tight ends.

    2) Find the next Chad Owens to return kicks.

    3) Find a kicker who has a big leg.

    4) Playmakers

    5) Offensive and Defensive lineman.

I noticed that 4 has non-conference games in 2012, USC, BYU, Lamar, and South Alabama. Does that mean we are playing 9 conference games to complete the 13 game schedule? I thought we were not playing Wyoming for a couple of years! Also, are we playing at least one conference USA team since the conferences are merging? Or are we trying to schedule one more non-conference game, yet to be named? Just asking.

With McMackin gone, and Mouse moving already, is the one going back to Minnesota Gordy Shaw? Would Ashley Lelie in line to be wide receivers coach or maybe Craig Stutzmann returning? Keith Bhonopha is director of football operations at Boise State. Does he want to coach here? The better question might be does he want to live here. If Miano gets the job he does have connections to the NFL so I’m sure he would get some input on coaches, both in the pros as well as colleges.

  493. cocobean December 7, 2011 8:20 pm

#499. Not a Miano backer. Just making an observation.

He wasn’t the DC under JJ. That one year it was a committee effort.

Where are you getting your info about blatant favoritism from? Saying those things is almost like that infamous anonymous letter. Which players did he favor over which players. Who are those unnamed that are close to the program saying that. Charges but no specifics or names.

  494. Old Diver December 7, 2011 8:21 pm

Rolo was a gunslinger when he played here willing to take that chance to lead his team to victory. Miano is cut from the same cloth. You don’t survive eleven years in the NFL by playing under the radar. The radio interview indicates Miano and Rolovich are on the same page. We are not going to survive next season without taking risks and chances. USC can play it safe and hire proven because it can afford the best athletes money can buy. That said, I believe Rolo’s only chance of remaining offense coordinator is if Miano is head coach.

  495. kryon29 December 7, 2011 8:21 pm

the main people in UH must think we fans are fools. Even the media make us so. UH always makes huge statements that they are doing their best and work hard to build a decent and competitive program. We all buy into it. still nothing changes but the ticket prices. Just look at the ncaaCF recruiting section in ESPn and it will show you proof on why we cant win.UH is out worked in recruiting year in and year out period. Got really 4 commits so far while boise rakes in on commits. Why.How can we expect to legitimately compete.

UH needs to do 2 things:

Upgrade 1950’s campus to attract the new era players. Make our university more of a 21st century college experience and they may want to come. Kam honolulu has the idea. Its not just a school up there but there own community.

Dont talk just work hard at recruiting.Year round. We throw it 40+ a game we should be able to recruit 3 star receivers in the hundreds. hinged upon this game. winning this game not playing not to lose. game. winning this game not playing not to lose.

  496. Not an Expert December 7, 2011 8:24 pm

Someone on SportsHawaii.com felt there was a skunk on the staff. Why UH didn’t seem to make critical plays in the secondary at crucial times.

I did notice one coach who had many conversations during the games in prior season not having them with Mack on the sidelines. Was it cause Mack talked to Tomey a lot or vice versa.

I do hope that jealousy or envy or being an undermining weasel (skunk as called) has no validity to it.

  497. PolyMom December 7, 2011 8:24 pm

Wow yesterday you all were posting about pakalolo. Today it is about Mayan’s. What is up with that?

  498. Old Diver December 7, 2011 8:25 pm

A big name head coach doesn’t sell tickets, winning sells tickets.

  499. cocobean December 7, 2011 8:27 pm

    #494. Meant #491.

#491. See #493. That’s what I’m talking about. The media seems to be behind Miano. It’s seems to me the media is giving Miano every chance he wants to plead his case. He’s been convincing every time I see him.

The more he’s on air the more people he has a chance to convince.

  500. el burro sabio December 7, 2011 8:30 pm

Someone who is a good position coach does not necessarily make a good head coach

Someone who is not a good position coach does not necessarily make a bad head coach

  501. Chee! December 7, 2011 8:38 pm

#491 – Norm Chow’s interview for HC prolly left a bad taste in his mouth to this very day…

  502. Haleakala December 7, 2011 8:40 pm

I like what Rich Miano says about his emphasis on getting the best recruits. I don’t think that there was enough energy placed on the aspect of getting information on and getting the best players possible in the past. I wouldn’t mind if he got the job. But whoever is selected by the advisory and the search committee, I will support him.

  503. Kevin December 7, 2011 8:40 pm

Ok.. I want to see the selection committee that selected the selection committee then. 😆

  504. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:42 pm

494: Ok I agree, I should retrack the “favoritism” comment about Miano. I guess you need to talk to the players themselves to get the real story. I’ll back off on that. My bad. I simply have problems with what I’ve seen from the UH secondary play the last few seasons (not a slight against the players by any means).

Again, maybe Miano should have been given another chance or more time to actually be a defensive coordinator to prove himself instead of by committee. We’ll never know. He’s a good guy, from all indications, very articulate, smart, etc. He’s also taking advantage of the fact that he is the only known candidate for the job at this time. I’m just concerned that it may cloud the decision making process when comes down to hiring a new head coach.

  505. Old School Dave December 7, 2011 8:50 pm

I remember when Dave Holmes resigned/was forced out in 73 after going 9-2. There was a ground swelling of support for DC Larry Price to take over. One of the candidates was a USC defensive assistant named Dave Levy who was very interested in the UH job. I’m not privy to what happened, but if I recall correctly, Levy was deemed the best candidate, but in the end Price was hired. Maybe Don can fill in the missing info on what happened.

  506. Derek December 7, 2011 8:52 pm

Nowhere does it says to be a Head Coach that Head Coaching experience at the Division I level is required. The question that the search committee will want to know is that if the applicant has the work experience, demonstrated skills, and his plan to be an effective and successful leader of the program, period. The main job is to manage people, the staff, the coaches, the players. Effective leaders do a good job to managing and coaching to get them do their jobs to produce. Of utmost, good communication skills and clarity of purpose. Some of them is pre-game, halftime, or end of game speeches. Above else, understanding each player and each coach is an important part of the team.

Vince Lombardi was never a head coach until the was chosen to be one with the Green Bay Packers. He was assistant coaches in college at several places like Fordham and Army and with the NY Giants before he went to Green Bay.

Al, can you find out what Rolo would have done on 4th and 1 on the 44 yard line with about 2 minutes in the game against San Jose with us having the ball, 3 time outs, and San Jose with no time outs. As we all know, we punted and San Jose St. got the ball and went about 80+ yards to score a TD to beat us 28-27. I’m positive he didn’t makie the call.

  507. wowlaulau December 7, 2011 8:57 pm

Have you guys ever met norm chow? lol, think Greg Mcmackin communication skills but grumpy, well actually worst than crumpy…..

  508. madeinhawaii December 7, 2011 8:57 pm

    Kevin,

ST listed the screening committee… I’m now waiting to see who will be on the final selection committee… AND who they get to pick from.

  509. AlaWai December 7, 2011 8:57 pm

Derek: Tomey’s mantra is to punt and place the games fate into the hands of the D. Always was and always will be.

  510. cocobean December 7, 2011 9:01 pm

Really big IF. IF Miano gets the job….

The litmus test if he was the best choice will be the staff he puts together. He has to cut the dead wood and replace them with coaches that will help him move the program forward.

Keeping most of the same staff, to me, will be an indication that he may not have been the best choice. An indication he did a good job of selling himself and nothing more.

A new coach means change. IF he is the new coach he must make changes.

  511. BigHiloFan2 December 7, 2011 9:07 pm

I am sending a lot of players out to the “selection committee”, and alot more prayers out to the peeps who are going to select the next HC.

our leaders need to show guts. leaders who believe in themselves. leaders from the front.

leaders who know how to win. and, next year, will choose a winner. not a good talker. a winner.

if the players we respect for being honest are not talking in favor of a present coach, then we gots to look outside the program. no ifs, ans, or butts. we need an a$$ kickin Marine. Buds Trained. Someone we all don’t mind going to war with. someone who will push our program just a little bit more.

Sorry to the peace niks. Happy December 7th.

  512. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:07 pm

So basically the screening committee selects the selection committee who will compile a list of coaches. Once that is done, another committee will be named to select a group of people to look at the list of coaches names and pare it down. After that, we are going to name an interview committee to interview the coaches to break it down even further. After interviews, we will need to launch a search for a hiring committee who will be responsible for reviewing the process with the AD from start to finish to see if they approve. If they do, they will give the AD the okay to hire the coach. The AD will then put together a committee to make the official hire and put together the coaches contract.

I don’t do well with anticipation. I just like know already.

  513. Willie December 7, 2011 9:08 pm

One of the best Leahy & Leahy shows, honest and telling it like it is.

When Miano was asked what was lacking in the program one of the things he said was the need for discipline. That was great, making this a priority means minimizing one variable that can get in the way of winning. Have been harping on this a lot in the GM era, check my blogs. There was not consequence of action for selfish, uncontrolled lolo acts. If Miano is appointed HC, I would like him to remember this. Placing the team before individuals will hopefully mean something. Personal fouls carry the max 15 yards.

  514. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:10 pm

Just thought I’d jump on the “you’re crazy if you think JJ is coming back” bandwagon. No man in his right mind would give up $2 million a year to come here for $600-700K. Some say it isn’t about the money. Um, when you make that much money it is.

  515. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:11 pm

If Miano felt there was a need for discipline on the team, as a coach on said team, why didn’t he instill some?

  516. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:12 pm

Willie, I don’t mean to discredit your point. You make a VERY GOOD point about discipline.

  517. cocobean December 7, 2011 9:15 pm

    505. On Monday I was dead set against Miano or anyone else on staff. But he’s been on every evening news cast, a couple of morning “news” shows. the radio and even PBS. He’s a convincing saleman, very sincere in what he’s saying.

On the Animals Show he talked about keeping aspects of the R & S merged with the use of TE’s, two RBs and aspects of the read option. I was eating up everything he was saying.

If I had a vote on the selection committee I would have given it to him then and there. Lucky I was snapped to objectivity when I recalled Larry Price’s presser, “the Hula T, a new computed offense with no set tendency.”

  518. Willie December 7, 2011 9:16 pm

kev-1, You can have input with discipline in the position you coach. Just think, not a lot of defensive backs has those lolo & selfish moments. It all starts at the top.

How come it seemed that Rolo could not really call plays he wanted. Looking like playing not to lose instead of winning? Did you watch the sideline, see how often GM was in Rolo’s ear. How many times GM was in the QB’s ear after Rolo gave him the play? Perfect example, 2nd half of the Fresno State game, 2nd time out called & Rolo finished giving Graves the play, GM held on to Graves while the play clock ticked away and Rolo was not even in the conversation. Starts at the top.

  519. d1shima December 7, 2011 9:17 pm

If Miano felt there was a need for (insert here) on the team, as a coach on said team, why didn’t he instill (insert here)?

  520. BigHiloFan2 December 7, 2011 9:18 pm

and to kev-1 and willie, about discipline, what I saw 3 years ago when the db who went pro was dissing RM during a practice, when ARM was trying to persuade the kid to show more discipline, and the db was running off his mouth, in front of other teammates, that really really really irritated me.

if they choose RM as HC, and he doesn’t get onto the player that disrespects HIM, then he will lose the respect of the team. I think he already has, but I’m not saying that fore sure. I don’t know.

I am not for RM. I am for Hawaii. Thats all I care about, Hawaii. Us not being respected on national tv is a big no no.

  521. cocobean December 7, 2011 9:18 pm

    #518. computerized offense.

  522. Willie December 7, 2011 9:18 pm

kev-1, no offense taken. Think about the same players making the same infraction over & over again, but they still stayed in the game. I know I made a comparison to the Oakland Raiders on this subject.

  523. al December 7, 2011 9:19 pm

derek…i was there sitting on the 50yd line 21st row seat 1. it appeared to me that rolo wanted to go for it. i think he had a play called. I think it was tomey who told mack to punt. then we got conservative in the second half by direction.

  524. BigHiloFan2 December 7, 2011 9:21 pm

which is why we need a OC for HC

  525. Willie December 7, 2011 9:21 pm

Just making a comment on RM’s comment about the discipline subject. Just was a sore that festered & bothered me and someone on the coaching staff brought it up. Hey, like they say actions speaks louder than words. Like BHF2, it’s all about Hawaii, been there in the stands almost every game for 32 years now.

  526. RedZone December 7, 2011 9:22 pm

cocobean that sounds like it came from Rolos playbook.

  527. BigHiloFan2 December 7, 2011 9:25 pm

i left the stands last year. not because of the team, but because of alot of other non relevant issues. i think i am a good example of the fans who stayed away these past couple of years. like my cousin, who is hoping for a coach we can believe in. someone who won’t cry for taking on the Irish. Who knows how to file up the fan base, and won’t leave us feeling we gotta apologize for being accused of being mean.

I keep thinking of the Florida peeps, who called us hula hula girls. i can’t wait for the payback. to Wisconsin. to Washington. to USC. to BYU. to BSU.

i want a coach who will inspire us to believe in us. Us includes the team and the fans.

  530. cocobean December 7, 2011 9:38 pm

#527. Miano did make reference to Rolo when he was saying those things. Got more respect for Rolo now. Seems Rolo didn’t have a free hand in implementing plays in practice that weren’t part of the pure R & S.

  531. fmrplyr December 7, 2011 9:39 pm

Please do not hire Rolo. He kicked me off of the football team. I didn’t do anything wrong. He asked me to go into the game, and I told him no. It was embarassing to be sent into the game with less than a minute on the clock. If you hire Rolo, there will be more players kicked off of the team because they don’t play by Rolo’s rules. At least Mack stuck up for me and tried to talk Rolo into letting me stay. Mack is the bomb. Miano is a great guy too. I think he wanted to give me another chance. Rolo sucks. He thinks we’re in the Marines or something.

  532. Derek December 7, 2011 9:42 pm

Al, thanks. Also, Ala Wai. I was watching the game at my friends house and was telling go for it!!!! You have the game in your hands, make one yard the game is over and we win. If you don’t make it you have another chance to win by stopping them. Punt it away and play prevent defensem, bend, but don’t break. In theory, that’s what conventional strategy would call for. However, watching the game all day it’s not like San Jose St. coudn’t move the ball. In fact, they had no trouble moving the ball by the pass. That loss to me sealed the deal that Mack had to go. He should have had more confidence in Rolovich.. Maybe Tomey made the call, but Mack is still responsible.

  533. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:45 pm

518 . . . that offense sounds good to me. I agree with your view of Miano as you. Flat out didn’t want him in the beginning, now I think I may be getting sucked into the hype. I hope its not just hype. He is sure saying a lot of the right things.

One thing that is starting to become evident, despite the obvious support for Mack because he was a nice guy, is the discontent that may have been lurking on his staff that many of us had suspected for a long time. I am sure this happens on every coaching staff though, as different personalities have different ideas.

  534. tommui December 7, 2011 9:45 pm

#498 PolyMom: I think some people were confusing my favorite Maui Wowie with pakalolo. They make great chocolate candy bars – (except maybe the white chocolate with coconut). Google the Maui Wowie name if you are interested. They take mail orders.

  535. joecitizen December 7, 2011 9:47 pm

Screw head coach. I want Miano to be my Governor.

  536. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:47 pm

532 . . . you’re kidding me right? You’re telling us that an OC has more authority than the HC to kick a player off of the team? Not buying it. And yes young man, if your coach tells you to get in the game, you get in the game. How could you say no? You were a member of the team weren’t you? Sounds to me a comment from an undisciplined former player.

  537. kev-1 December 7, 2011 9:48 pm

  539. d1shima December 7, 2011 9:56 pm

    Cha wait!

Coach says, Get in the game.

Player says, No. I embarrassed to play for this team.

Player no like the coach’s rules.

Coach no like the player play anymore.

And so what is the problem?

  540. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 9:57 pm

Tomey’s conservative actions rubbed off on Coach Mac? Maybe Mac hired him for his experience and respected him too much to listen to him instead of his gut. I remember watching Tomey’s teams at UH and he was too conservative.

  541. Shadow December 7, 2011 10:00 pm

With all the “thou is great, Rich” by Rich, i wonder how the others on the staff feel if they plan to apply for HC. I wonder how the search/screening committee feel – they’re all intelligent people who embrace local values such as being humble & taking care of others.

  542. Kevin December 7, 2011 10:06 pm

We need a head coach for a head coach.

    I’ll repost:

    Kevin:

    December 7th, 2011 at 3:49 pm

The best defense is a good offense?

    In retrospect…. LAZY.

Come my people and shut thy doors about thee.

For power should come to punish the weak for their inequity.

For on the second day of 2012, a familiar force shall arrive to claim what it is his… And it will be the end of the world as you know it.

During this year’s games we (people who watched PPV at my house) questioned the play calling on offense. Why don’t they run any play action passes to freeze the linebackers. They did it one time for a short score. Never saw it again. It was toward the end of the season but I forget which game. All these long passes to it seems, nobody. Also, against Cal-Davis, we did a running back pass with Iosefa and it worked. Never saw it again. Clock management was bad too. The take a knee with 3 timeouts left in the half. Looking back it does remind me of Tomey’s years here. Tomey left because he knew the fans wanted him out and was very lucky the Arizona position opened up. I also was wondering why they didn’t dicipline players who got personal fouls and players who lipped off too. I also didn’t like the rule if you are a starter and cannot practice, you still start if you can play. The season is starting to make sense, but I don’t like it. JMHO.

If ti was all so bad, we need to clean house. Bottom up.. top down. All this Miano stuff just seems to polished for me. Too well-prepared, almost like a campaign that’s been put together ahead of time. I don’t like it. Sorry… just my opinion. I know I’m out-numbered. But it just doesn’t feel right.

  551. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 10:20 pm

Miano said that inspite of JJ taking SMU to 3 bowl games and didn’t have a winning season for a while before he got there, only 14,000 in the stands.

Dick is ultra-conservative, but he was 63-46-3 here and 95-64-4 at Arizona. No can argue with that. And before anyone points out his record at San Jose, he never had a chance with all those lost scholarships and even less fan support than we have here.

  554. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 10:26 pm

MIH, I kinda of agree with your #551, but now a lot of things are coming out that I wondered about especially during this last season. I hope it doesn’t end just yet. Let the coaches keep explaining what went on during the season. It’s proving I’m not nuts and just was complaining too much. bwahahahahahaha.

  555. papajoe2 December 7, 2011 10:34 pm

#554 ebs, cannot argue about the record, but he was going down hill toward the end of his Hawaii stint. He too is a real nice guy but, watching everyone of his games here in Hawaii got to be boring and very predictable. SJS was boring too. When Bob Wagner took over, he took chances on 3rd down and was more exciting. Wags didn’t start off great, but his teams were more exciting. He too went downhill, but I noticed it was after coach Johnson “lost” his playbook. Word was it was passed around the WAC coaches, but that was not confirmed.

Jim Harbaugh finished playing in the NFL in 2001. He coached the QB’s for the Raiders in 2002 and 2003.

Two years of coaching, then head coach at U. of San Diego in 2004. Wow. Somebody had to really take a chance on him at San Diego. Look at him today.

  567. al December 8, 2011 12:37 am

are you saying perhaps we take a chance on an ex-qb?

  568. Pride. December 8, 2011 12:40 am

So Art Briles was a high school coach before getting a college coaching job at Texas Tech in 2000. After coaching at Texas Tech for three years, Briles was hired to become the head coach at Houston in 2003.

Now has a quarterback as a finalist for the Heisman trophy. Someone at Houston really went out on a limb to hire someone with only three years of college experience.

  569. Pride. December 8, 2011 12:45 am

Todd Graham was a high school football coach untill 2001, when he was hired to coach linebackers at West Virginia. Five years later he was the head coach at Rice, then Tulsa and now Pittsburgh.

  570. Pride. December 8, 2011 1:03 am

Perhaps Al is right. Perhaps Rolo deserves a decent look?

  571. al December 8, 2011 1:07 am

however, it is not i to judge.

perhaps one on the selection committee has a keen eye for potential.

  572. al December 8, 2011 1:09 am

what i like about rolo is that he is confident and yet has a humble way about him.

two traits that could take him a long way.

  573. al December 8, 2011 1:10 am

plus, he is my kind of guy.

i hear he has a passion for sushi bars.

  574. kev-1 December 8, 2011 1:11 am

Pride . . . you’re actually making a better case for Cal Lee than you are Rolo. High School coach, moved to college ranks, now just waiting for his shot as a head coach. Now, I don’t disagree with your logic, and agree that maybe Rolo should be given a shot. But following your logic (which I think is solid), why do people get so up in arms when someone suggests Cal Lee?

  575. Pride. December 8, 2011 1:22 am

#575 – Hmmmm, you’re right kev-1. Boy, did I screw that one up. Lol. Well throw Cal’s hat in the ring.

  576. Pride. December 8, 2011 1:24 am

Rumor has it that Dirk Koetter applied? Not sure if that is true or not? The Jaguars are dead last in the NFL in total offense. Koetter is the OC. Hopefully he’s a better HC than an OC.

  577. al December 8, 2011 1:25 am

well then throw tuioti’s hat in the ring, too.

  578. kev-1 December 8, 2011 1:26 am

  582. Pride. December 8, 2011 1:32 am

I have all the respect in the world for Cal Lee. I know for a fact that Cal Lee can manage games and manage the clock very well. He is definitely experienced at all phases of the game. He actually is the type of guy that could help a young coach like Miano, Rolo, or Tuioti, transition into the head job.

Another guy that would be good at that would be Buzzy Preston. Buzzy has tons of experience and could help the young guys with the small details that are needed to succeed at the job. I also believe that Buzzy still “bleeds green”.

  583. al December 8, 2011 1:34 am

koetter, otherwise has a nice resume.

  590. Pride. December 8, 2011 1:45 am

Would be interesting if both Mark Banker and Mike Cavanaugh applied for the job? Same could be said if both Dino Babers and Brian Norwood applied for the job? Heard that one NFL team had a coach apply and another one from the same staff inquire about the Hawaii job. Interesting. Even though the pay is not that high, there is interest from some guys just to get their foot into the head coaching door. Once they get two or three years under their belt, then they can move to geener pastures from there. Would we allow ourselves to be played like that? Or do we just look at it as a reality of today’s coaching world.

  591. al December 8, 2011 1:47 am

  592. Pride. December 8, 2011 1:48 am

I am not impressed at all with the list of canidates. They should not hire someone with June Jones ties. They need someoone to instill new blood into the program. Coach Miano I think would be a step back for the program. If he haf all of these ideas before why didnt he use them. He is a good coach but he should not be our hc. Glanville also would not be good, he couldnt win at Portland state. None of the other canidates bring any excitement to the program—- We can do better

  652. krump1_AKA_protector December 8, 2011 6:46 am

I’d just like a Head Coach that will let Rolo do his thing without any restraints. If Rolo became HC it would divert some of that energy and focus. There were many who complained there was no “vertical” game. How the heck can you get a vertical game or enable the QB to go through his progressions if you only have 1 to 3 seconds to get rid of the ball? What hand-cuffed Rolo was that inconsistent protection on the O-Line. What hurt was losing Austin Hansen for the season. He would’ve shored up that leaky Tackle spot. In any case, the young, inexperienced / red-shirted guys have a lot of talent, but have to step-up in a hurry. If they do, This Offense will become deadly again. Agree with others that the lack of consistent wrap-up tackling was a concern that needs to be addressed. Hope John Hardy-Tuliau becomes the starter at Corner opposite Mike Edwards; that should go a long way toward shoring up a key part of the secondary.

  653. RedZone December 8, 2011 6:50 am

Re JJ: It’s my recollection that he came to Hawaii because of the atmosphere of the community. His wife (at the time) was undergoing or had completed cancer treatment and he felt Hawaii was the place to be while she recuperated. Two years later…divorced and ex-wife moves back to Oregon. In spite of going to the Sugar Bowl, I never felt JJ did anything good for Hawaii football. Look, four years later, what a mess we’re in now. Even Timmy Chang’s records didn’t last that long. I for one, don’t want to see him back. Look at his recruiting record, weren’t most of the outstanding performers during his tenure walk-ons?

Re Tomey: I also recall that after going to the Rose Bowl while he was at Arizona, he got a raise and the year after that, Arizona fired him. Bowl game, pay raise…one year later, fired. I remember his mantra, it’s so hard to have winning seasons. 7-6 seasons just don’t hack it.

Re Miano: 13 years on staff without being wooed away because of his talent by other schools, it’s like Nash sitting on the bench for 20 years and expecting to have a better record than his predecessor’s (barely .500). People aren’t chameleons and can’t change themselves in a blinki of an eye. Not even long term. They are what they are.

In my opinion, if you fire the coach and continue to do the same thing all over again (RnS) and expect to have success with the same staff, that’s the definition of being crazy. The Head Coach is fired, then CLEAN HOUSE. That’s the athletics director’s job. Get it? DIRECTOR!
