Wednesday

From today’s practice:

• Strong-side linebacker Art Laurel resumed practicing. He has an injury to his right hand.

• Weak-side linebacker Aaron Brown did not practice because of a sprained ankle. He said he will be good to go tomorrow.

• Right wideout Royce Pollard did not practice because of a tight right hamstring. He expects to start against New Mexico State Saturday night. But if he can’t go, all signs point to freshman Trevor Davis being activated and earning the start. Davis has several nicknames, but Pollard refers to him as “The Rookie.” Pollard has been serving as Davis’ mentor.

• During a special-team drill, Davis out-raced safety John Hardy-Tuliau.

• Center London Sapolu and right guard David Lefotu will make their second consecutive starts. Lefotu and Matagisila Lefiti will split time at guard. If Sapolu needs a break, then Lefiti will slide over to center. Andrew Faaumu, who started the first five games at right guard, has moved to left guard, where he is backing up Brett Leonard. Faaumu said he has healed from a sprained right ankle that kept him out of the San Jose State game.

• It’s official: Mike Sellers is the No. 1 quarter (nickelback).

Few could argue with the credentials of the recent inductees into UH’s Circle of Honor. One was a trailblazer, the other two were blazers in their sports.

But once again the circle is oblong, with the membership leaning heavily toward Olympic sports and non-athlete contributors. In other words: Where the heck are all the football players?

There are only three members who played football during the past 25 years. The list of omissions, from the Nogas, Rich Miano, Garrett Gabriel and MIchael Carter to Ashley Lelie, Chad Owens, Tim Chang and Samson Satele, is noticeable. (Athletic director Jim Donovan does not have a vote, but he assembled the committee, and even he should acknowledge that Niko Noga was the best player on his team.)

I’ve toured many campuses and visited many schools’ Hall of Fame museums. They included wide-spread representations of their successes. And that should be the point of the Circle of Honor. Induction should not be so political and difficult as a Supreme Court nomination. UH has few opportunities to celebrate its successes. Why limit the inductions? And why so one-sided?

This weekend, the recent inductions will be celebrated during intermissions at the volleyball match Friday and homecoming football game Saturday. It is an acknowledgment that while football is popular, in the view of some, it is not honorable.

    Get those honorable footballers recognized!

  5. whitey October 19, 2011 6:11 am

like i said about boo boos. on this point alone, circle of honor, jd is doing a lousy job and someone should remind him that he is in charge of of a dept which includes a lot of athletes and sports. if he thinks he is doing his job on this, look in the mirror and he will see a clown.

  6. Old Diver October 19, 2011 6:11 am

Have the circle of honor criteria ever been published? Or is it “vote for who you like?”

  7. whitey October 19, 2011 6:12 am

    good morning tsaikos.

    Morning, gang!

  9. whitey October 19, 2011 6:21 am

almost every major school or pro sport has something similiar to the hall of fame or circle of honor have a list of candidates for that year published. then the alumni, athletic booster members, or writers vote on the list of honorees. but, not uh, they do things in the dark and expect alumnis and friends to accept the athletic director’s choices. hope jd reads the blog today cause he and his committee sucks.

  10. d1shima October 19, 2011 6:21 am

    Great Morning All!

Is the team practicing in pads today?

    Back to work today.

    Have a terrific day erryboddy!

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Get Well, all ailing Warriors!

Coaches and players- keep up the great work!

Hall of Fame reflects the upper campus mindset. Perhaps the money saved by not renewing football coaches’ salaries will be spent on improving the pool so that someday we’ll have an Olympic swim or dive champ? (sarcasm)

    Have a great hump day!

  12. Wes'side Warrior October 19, 2011 6:25 am

    Howzit, everyone!

Maybe most of the voters don’t know of the older student athletes, and their contribution to the school and state.

Or, maybe they do and just don’t care.

  13. CoolEthan October 19, 2011 6:26 am

How about changing it to the Triangle of Honor.

3 points of foundation vs. a rolling ball

    stronger and more defined

  14. CoolEthan October 19, 2011 6:27 am

But then could morph into the Triads group

    oh oh

  15. Wes'side Warrior October 19, 2011 6:28 am

Or, maybe everyone is peeking at SOMEBODY’s sheet, and copying the names chosen, so they get to keep their *high* position in the Upper Campus Society.

    G’day whitey & all Tsai-ko’s great ‘n small!

So ST, how do we make it known to the committee that we want the aforementioned footballers included?

I don’t want to start a letter writing campaign. Why can’t they put it on-line like so many other choices are made for such things?

  17. LizKauai (iPad) October 19, 2011 6:39 am

I think the problem is in the definition of the title, “Circle of Honor.” It’s too broad.

Change it to, “Circle of Supporters.” That would make it more appropriate to current and past inductees.

    Then

Make a separate one just for athletes alone.

The 1st collection was enuff to take care of the entire complex at the Kalaeloa Outreach shelter! Bernie Luning at the Waianae Outreach Shelter had heard of our effort and asked for her shelter to be included.

Mahalo to gmahoney, the Docs, James, and slugger for your input. For those who had good intent, but bad memory…please remember to bring your donation.

It may seem like a small thing to do, but it was a BIG deal for the kids. Who knows, those donated items may make a difference in some child’s life one day.

Last night I asked the blog people is graduation was a requirement to get in the Circle of Honor. Pomai, thanks for your response. I didn’t think that some of these nominees or current people in the “Circle” graduated. What kind of hornor are we talking about? Shouldn’t it be an honor to graduate from the University of Hawaii? True they are or were great athletes, but isn’t this a higher learning institution? Again, how can they be honored if they didn’t graduate???

    A perspective of Garret’s suggestion:

If Boise and Air Force leaves the MWC then UH, Fresno and Nevada should consider going back to the WAC. Have the WAC renegotiate their TV contract with ESPN or the other networks. The TV contract of the MWC sucks and will be the slow death of football for those schools because that contract runs to 2016 and as reported that Network does not want to compromise. Get San Diego State and UNLV go to the WAC too.

West Division of the WAC will include UH, Fresno, Nevada, UNLV, San Diego State, San Jose.

East Division Utah State, New Mexico State, Idaho, Texas at San Antonio, (Colorado State, New Mexico, Wyoming) One of those schools to seek C-USA affiliation.

Have C-USA take LaTech when they lose UCF, SMU, Houston.

As for the other sports anyone’s guess with Seattle, Denver, UT-Arlington and whomever joining the WAC. UT-Arlington are reviving their football program as the go forward.

C-USA and WAC to create the alliance. MWC last in first out. Have MWC be the associate commissioner to Benson with he taking over with the retirement of Benson.

Big East will prevail over the WAC, C-USA and the MWC. To many top guns at the executive level with interest for the Big East.

  29. Garret October 19, 2011 7:56 am

3 football players from the past 25 years of UH football teams for the Circle of Honor? It is almost like UH doesn’t want to honor their football team.

I have NO problem with the 3 selections this year. I do wonder at how only *3* UH athletes were chosen worthy when so many others (including many non-football players) have not been inducted into the Circle of Honor.

Honoring student-athletes who played for UH, re-establishing bonds with former UH athletes, getting the general public to read about former UH athletes, and getting valuable media attention that translates to free marketing of UH and its Athletic Department…the Circle of Honor committee and how it is being run seems to have ignored all of those things.

  30. Garret October 19, 2011 7:58 am

UTSA is looking to jump from the WAC to the MWC…before it has even joined the MWC.

a source who wished to be remain anonymous told me Saturday morning that the Roadrunners already have been on C-USA’s short list for some time. And considering UTSA has publicly stated that its dream location was always the C-USA, it would appear that the only thing lacking is an invitation from this new mega-league. Which, of course, the Roadrunners would jump on.

Very newsworthy information, of course, but hardly earth-shattering when you do the math.

Should the Mountain USA or Conference West or whatever they’ll call this giant of a new league look for more new members, the pickings are pretty slim. Barring some stunning development, and one of the BCS leagues fractures apart, there are only two leagues it can reasonably be expected to raid – the Sun Belt and the WAC.

And looking at those leagues, the numbers of schools that would add obvious value are slim indeed.

Didn’t Ferd write a story that stated the exit of Boise State has reduced the payout from ESPN from 4-4.5 million to one million?

  32. Garret October 19, 2011 8:05 am

UHAD budget comparison…take away all of UH’s travel expenses including that for recruiting and UH still spends far more than other WAC schools.

    UH: $35 mil

    SJSU: $20.8 mil

    Nevada: $24 mil

    Fresno: $26.7 mil

    Idaho: $15.7 mil

    Utah State: $19.3 mil

    La Tech: $16.5 mil

Why don’t we schedule a game against Georgia? We all still remember the Sugar Bowl like it was yesterday 3 years after the fact. I think we’ll get over it if we play them again and this time actually compete…

Random thought while thinking about the omission of the 2007 team…

  34. Garret October 19, 2011 8:10 am

Didn’t Ferd write a story that stated the exit of Boise State has reduced the payout from ESPN from 4-4.5 million to one million?

Here is one of Ferd’s articles (less than a year old) that shows that the WAC was getting $4.5 mil when BSU was in the conference.

  36. Garret October 19, 2011 8:12 am

    WarriorNY,

UH has turned down multiple opportunities to play road games at SEC and Big 10 schools where UH would get at least $1 mil. Schools like Georgia would lose a lot of money if they played home-and-home games with UH, especially since they wouldn’t use the Hawaii Exemption since they are in a conference with a title game.

A school like Georgia makes $6 mil or more per home game. They make $0 per road game. CBS/ESPN also pays SEC schools extra to have extra home games since only home games give TV rights to SEC schools.

  37. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2011 8:13 am

    #33,

I think Georgia would be happy to have us play at Georgia. Here, not so much.

And JD is not going to schedule a one and done body bag game.

Georgia is not having a great year, but I personally do not want to see us look even worse than we did in the Sugar Bowl considering how we got our okoles handed to us by UNLV and San Jose.

Maybe someday though…kinda like over the rainbow.

  38. Kevin October 19, 2011 8:13 am

In the record books, Wilkins is to UH softball as Elam’s kicking tales are to UH football.. Still “untouchable”.

How about a congrats for her???? No?? Ok monku monku as they say…

In name value alone, let alone accomplishments, Natasha Kai is to UH soccer as Colt Brennan is to UH football and she’s a local icon with a gold medal for her country.

How about a congrats for her?? NO??? Ok… monku monku as dey say…

Patsy Mink… well, what else do I need to say? For those with daughters that aspire to be collegiate athletes and their parents that would appreciate her education being paid for at the same time, well, you can thank Ms. Mink for that and more.

How about a little congrats for her as well?????????????????

  39. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2011 8:17 am

Or as a certain coach implied…If we added another $10M to our football budget, we could go to Georgia and play up.

  40. Shoko October 19, 2011 8:24 am

    Garret,

Thanks for those links. So, is it true that ESPN renegotiated their TV deal with the WAC to one million since Boise State left. The story mentioned that WAC commissioner Karl Benson refused to confirm or deny the rumored ESPN terms and I haven’t heard anything since.

  41. Garret October 19, 2011 8:30 am

If the Big 12 decides to stop at 10 teams right now, Big East schools might be off the table for them if they want to add 2 more teams in the future. In other words, if the Big 12 replaces Missouri with BYU or Louisville and stops there, this whole conference realignment thing could finally settle down.

If the Big 12 and Big East have TV rights granted to the conference like the Big 10, things will settle down finally in realignment.

Yes, a school like WVU could pay its $10 million and move to another league. But the league it’s leaving would retain the media rights until the end of the contract, which could be 10 years. And the media rights are an athletic department’s most important financial asset. No school is leaving those behind. No league is taking in a school without them.

  43. uhfan09 October 19, 2011 8:51 am

About wear and tear on the body, every team suffers the same thing its just who can suckit up and play. Hawaiis problem is the way they practice mostly only helmets no pads and hardly no contact. At least practice in full pads so there body will adjust to all the extra weight not just on gameday go full pads and expect the body to endure all the hits.

  44. Wes'side Warrior October 19, 2011 8:53 am

    Re: Athletic Department Budget Comparisons…

Looks like raw numbers. There’s also no adjustments made for COLA. Obviously, it costs more to live and maintain everything in Hawaii than it does in most places on the mainland.

We pay a ton for indirect facilities.

  45. WarriorNY October 19, 2011 8:58 am

    Garret,

I know JD doesn’t like us to travel cross country but couldn’t we use the $1 million to play them at their place?

    @35

    RE: Georgia

It doesn’t matter if we lose, so long as we play well like we did against USC last year. That’s all I’m saying. It may take away the bad taste out of our mouths.

We would be able to play with them. At least for a little bit.

I think we can play with anyone in the country so long as we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot with turnovers or bad special teams play. Look at all of our losses in the past two years… All of them, except Boise ST. last year were because of turnovers or bad special teams play.

  46. SteveM October 19, 2011 8:58 am

After all the math was done, the UHAD still made $1.3 mil overall last year. And that was without a student fee. We were near the top of the conference in ticket sales too, which helped.

Some schools had ZERO in broadcast/tv money. Wow.

  49. madeinhawaii October 19, 2011 9:17 am

    Circle of Honor….

In this day and age of the internet and cell phones… why isn’t the public invited to vote and count for a % of the vote?

UH still working in the dark (ages).

Hello! ? UH? Can you hear me now?

    Jojo,

You’re welcome! Glad you got it.

    Kekoa,

I’ll send some books w/ MsLiz to the T-Gate.

  51. Bleed Green and White October 19, 2011 9:18 am

Kevin – I agree with 100%, this years inductees into the UH Circle of Honor, congrats to one and all, well deserved each, Natasha, Brooke and the late Patsy Mink.

However, a few years a years ago I reached my “boiling point” with the powers that be regarded the Circle of Honor. Too politically motivated, too personal, too ignorant for my liking.

I’ve read some of the posts and actually have issue with some of them.

One asked what is the criteria? What said how can it be honor if the didn’t graduate?

To me, the UH Sports Circle of Honor should simply honor athletes, men, women and / or coaches, for what they did while they wore the school colors (uniforms) for their respective sport, period.

If they graduated, great. If not, fine too.

Political affiliation, upper campus ass-kissing, fund raising, I’m not saying it doesn’t have a place, need, or right to be honored, but to me, not in the Sports Circle of Honor.

Could they hit a ball, shoot a ball, throw a ball, make a tackle, run, jump etc…? And did they do it well while they represented the University of Hawaii? Isn’t that all that really matters?

Please, allow me to make a few comparisons, and please do not take them as dis-respectful, because they all deserve the attention. My point here, and I sure hope it’s taken that way, is that the ignorance of either the committee itself or the ignorance of the persons on the committee, that’s the problem:

    – Clay Stanley is in, he was 3rd team MPSF

    Costas Theocharidis is not in

Are you kidding me? Again, Stanley’s honor is deserved in my opinion, but how in the heck is Costas not in, the guy was a 4 time First Team All American.

It’s examples like this that just irk the cr*p out of me.

1992 Holiday Bowl football team should be in, the 2007 team that went 12-0 and earned a trip to the Sugar Bowl. How about Al Noga, first true first team All American, how about Niko Noga, to many, the most outstanding player / physical specimen to ever grace the campus. Don’t believe, somebody go ask Dick Tomey.

I’m glad Anthony Carter got it in so soon, how about Reggie Cross, Riley Wallace for that matter, Trevor Ruffin, Jarinn Akana….?

Tita Ahuna, Joey Meyer, John Matias, Mario Monico just to name a few.

Take the B.S. out of the process and honor those that University of Hawaii fans cheered for while they participated honorably in their respective sport, isn’t that what it is supposed to represent?

Again, please take no dis-respect toward any athlete already in, that’s not my intent, they are all deserving, minus the non-sense please, and let us all enjoy.

  52. madeinhawaii October 19, 2011 9:18 am

Is there a study that shows the total number of athletic scholarships per school as well?

  53. Couch potato October 19, 2011 9:20 am

congrats to the honorees. no can grumble about them. it’s the exclusion of many great UH football players over the past years that i going grumble about.

Mr. A-House, i must have missed the news of recent states seceding from the union and the bombardment of fort sumter and other similar bull run battles that are happening on the continent. 😆

  54. Don Weir October 19, 2011 9:27 am

In response to the lack of football players inducted into the Circle of Honor I would like to point out one of the greatest UH players of football (as well as track) was inducted during the last year. Richard ‘Potato’ Furtado was one of the great running backs to play in memorable games against Cal and UCLA. He was in the same backfield as Tom Kaulukukui could run, pass, and kick. Richard was also one of the great track stars of the late 30’s and early 40’s in both running events, and his specialty, the javelin.

Richard went on to form athletic leagues for youth on the island of Hawaii and founded restaurants on both O’ahu and Hawai’i.

  55. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 19, 2011 9:34 am

    From yesterday’s blog:

If you want to honor particular individuals (for their athletic achievements), then submit their names and a brief description of their careers to the Department of Athletics administration with a cc. to the UH Administration and the Board of Regents shortly after July 1 of each fiscal year.

An on-line poll is not how these types of awards are made. Many people on this site, for example, vote on a daily basis for best coach or quarterback or ??? That’s a popularity contest. That skews the results.

The purpose of this award is to honor someone who has not just played a collegiate sport as an undergraduate but also has contributed to making collegiate sports something really great.

For those of you who have not walked around The Stan reading the Circle of Honor plaques, it is an experience worth taking the time.

If you are not comfortable in writing a letter nominating/supporting a particular individual, then ask someone who is to include a petition signed by folks who agree with you as part of her/his communication with the UH Administration at all three levels.

  56. Wes'side Warrior October 19, 2011 9:37 am

Yes, repeating what’s already said above…

    Congratulations again to all Honorees!

The issue here is the names on the not-invited list. Most of the names that people come up with instantly are the ones that got us fans into the stands. Yes, the ones already inducted deserve to be there. But there are so many more whose names are just plain missing.

And, I wouldn’t mind seeing a list of the secretive Order of the Knights of Upper Campus, and a little background info on each of them.

  57. (Jesse) James October 19, 2011 9:46 am

    Good morning Tsaikos…

Congrats to the honorees….but like others have stated, many more individuals deserve the recognition.

Go Warriors!!!! Take care of business on Saturday!!! Stop screwing around and focus!!! Start strong Finish STRONGER!!!

Hope to see everyone at the T-gate!

  58. Weben October 19, 2011 9:47 am

The Circle of Honor is a good reflection of where the University community places its values with regard to Athletics

  64. jm2375 October 19, 2011 10:10 am

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Congrats to the Circle of Honor inductees.

#53 – I agree to a point. Clay Stanley only stayed a couple of years and was still a developing player, but then went on to play on the Olympic team. Costas was a great player, but, it was because of him that the NCAA stripped the team of the National Championship. I’m still sore about it, just saying…

Does a certain time period have to elapse before someone is considered for induction?

    GO WAHINE!

    GO WARRIORS!

Looking forward to seeing Chawan, Lefty & UHfan808 on the field on Saturday. 😀

#51 MIH . . . if you are trying to contact UH, you either need to call them from a land line on a rotary phone. If that doesn’t work, I heard they recently got a beeper. If you page them with your number and put 911, they might call you back. If not, you could always page them back 43 (just a test of old school beeper lingo – does that count as swearing on this blog?)

Maybe NaKoa and the WarriorNation should create it’s own Hall of Fame, just for Football, and include with it’s players and coaches, key people who helped the program along the way. People like Dr. Edison Miyawaki, Ben Yee, Papa Leahey, Bloghost, etc 🙂

Going back to yesterday’s picture of the sign “The Tougher it Gets the Better we Play”, I have a question. Does this transcend to, “The Tougher the Opponent, the Better we Play”????

If so, could this explain the UNLV and SJSU games?

Wasn’t this a knock on UH teams of the past, where some dubbed them as a team that played up the ability of the opponent?

  70. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 19, 2011 10:26 am

Of the past inductees, which ones do you think are not worthy of the honor?

The Circle of Honor does not just examine the collegiate aathletic career but also the life of the honoree both personally and professionally over an extended period.

For example, there are a few people in the Circle who never played for UH – or for that matter for any college team – but who used their clout in the greater community to support UH athletics by raising both $$$$ & awareness of the sport. I am thinking specifically of baseball, but I am sure that other sports have benefited as well from having a advcate or champion of the sport itself.

The honoree does not have to be dead or retired from the sport.

I am not arguing that the list should be expanded, but the value of the honor is diminished if more than a half a dozen are listed each year.

  73. kev-1 October 19, 2011 10:31 am

I don’t think there should be a sererate hall for football. I think the circle of honor just needs to get it right.

  74. turfwar October 19, 2011 10:34 am

Well said Tsai. No other athlete in any other sport puts more of themselves and sacrifices more of their bodies than the athletes in the football program. I’ve done work involving the athletes at UH for many years in many of the sports and no other sport requires the daily and year long grind that is asked of football players. If you doubt that just look at their physiques. Pick 20 of the strongest, fastest, leanest, and most explosive athletes in any given year on campus and they will most likely be football players. Don’t get me wrong, they all work hard and show dedication to their sport of choice but when compared with time invested and the injuries sacrificed for the love of the game no other sport matches what is required and asked of football players. And much of it is done just to avoid injuries, how much work is required to excel is another story.

  75. kev-1 October 19, 2011 10:37 am

MIH . . . this reminds me of the game telephone in school. I wonder if that’s how they conduct their meetings and make important decisions.

“What do you mean why didn’t I re-sign June Jones to a good deal? By the time the message got whispered in my ear, it was – remind June Jones to eat a good meal. No wonder I didn’t get it. That’s okay. We don’t really care about football that much anyway.”

  76. markazulu October 19, 2011 10:46 am

Sorry about the videos guys I just feel they are great videos with great messages that could go to our coaches, our players an MOST IMPORTANTLY OUR FANS! Simply put dont give up on our boys it takes our failures to help build our success! We all want to win as fans an players an coaches they have Experienced the greatness before but fell so short of it! They have tasted agonizing defeat! They need to learn FROM IT! Because if not it’ll keep happening again an again but they are indeed BETTER than that. Through the shortcomings of this season we still have 7 games left an I refuse to give up on them an our coaches! I want to see them succeed we saw a glimpse of what glory was in 2006 & especially 2007 IF It happened once it can HAPPEN AGAIN it could’ve been a fluke but we better make sure if we get another chance its not! Leave no doubt! Champions play with anyone our boys are better an you know what our coaches can do better than what they are putting out I know their better than producing teams that go 2008 (7-7) L: ND 49-21, 2009 (6-7) L: Wisconsin 51-10, 2010 (10-4) L:Tulsa 62-35 in their final games their better than that! No excuses though but I will always believe in our Warriors! It’s not WHO YOU PLAY its HOW YOU PLAY!!!

PLAY LIKE CHAMPIONS Only they can define themselves 7 games left PLAY LIKE CHAMPIONS! DEFEND THE WAC!

    GO WARRIORS

Happy Homecoming Week, Tsaikos! I hope the stadium is PACKED this Saturday…come out and support our Warriors. (Hey, even my brother who’s a UO alum and big Duck fan is bringing the wife and friends to tailgate and game!).

Congratulations to the 3 ladies for their induction into the UH Circle of Honor, and hmmmmmmmmm…what’s the criteria for CoH? Is it like the Pro Football Hall of Fame where they’re eligible after only a certain number of years, then need to be voted in?

Talk about UH football…Na Koa Football Club is trying to locate the gentlemen who played UH football prior to 1967 to make sure they’re on a roster of former players for recognition.

  79. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc October 19, 2011 10:52 am

Left out a key word in #75: I am not arguing that the list should NOT be expanded…..

Mahalo to Kekoa for the books/toys drive. The Windward Homeless Coalition started a similar program last spring. During a four-month period, we collected/distributed more than 5,000 books, toys, games & sports equipment to homeless kids and teens in urban Honolulu, Windward O`ahu and the North Shore. WHC wanted to continue the effort, but I was not able to get any help in collecting & distributing items so we decided to defer future drives until someone was willing to take on the effort.

  80. PowderPuff October 19, 2011 10:57 am

Oh, and while we’re talking UH football and Na Koa, on its Facebook Page and website, Na Koa will be featuring brief profiles of members each week. The honorable Tsaikos are encouraged to let it be known if you’d like to be profiled……this week’s profile is Kim Fujiuchi. After that, we’ll continue to spotlight Na Koa members, so watch for that.

  82. d1shima October 19, 2011 11:13 am

I’m not slamming any of the members of the CoH…just pointing out that as a recruit coming for a visit, it is very obvious where football is placed in the scheme of things at this University.

Comments here clamor for big-time defensive studs, fleet receivers, top-notch quarterbacks, kickers who can peal the leather off the ball with their kicks….they gotta be less than impressed by Hawaii’s lack of an on-campus stadium, last-century training facilities, and, as pointed out by the Blog Host, manini representation in the Circle of “Honor”.

    ….and I haven’t even mentioned the HC’s contract!

  83. d1shima October 19, 2011 11:15 am

Speaking of the UofO. I noticed several families sporting some Duck Swag on my flight back from PDX on Monday…HC Kelly is becoming quite a fixture in the islands!

  85. PowderPuff October 19, 2011 11:23 am

d1…really? Is he here at high school games…hmmmm?!??! Went there for my bro’s graduation 10 years ago, and the facilities were top notch back then. I can only imagine them now. Mom went to UO too, well…she probably went the same time as Phil Knight, so pre-Nike. 🙂

  86. AlaWai October 19, 2011 11:26 am

Regarding Depth IMHO…comes from talented players at every position, recruited in chronological layers, with an emphasis on athletes who can fill in at various positions. Dilemma: Because of limited scholies we must rely on walk-ons. Dilemma we still need to equip, house and make sure they are fed and medically cared for. Dilemma: $$$

Solutions! Help students find housing closer to campus to reduce commute times. 2 to 3 valuable hours are lost every day. On campus clinic for health and rehab. staffed by med schoolies and access to meals prepared by food service, tropic ag and TIM students.

  87. Kevin October 19, 2011 11:31 am

Saw a great piece last night during the pregame show for Wahine volleyball.

It was a feature on what the game day preparation is like for the Wahine. It showed them in and around the arena before a match and little things like a mural of former players on the entrance of their locker area, lockers with custom plaques of each player’s name and above their lockers are all the WAC reg season and tournament trophies and God knows what else.

For those that saw the Hawaii Five-O episode on Monday that are not familiar with the SSC facilities, YES that was their real locker room and surrounding areas.

Shoji can bring in recruits and show them, this is where we play and this is our house.

UH football… and some other sports, don’t have that to show. For football, do they take them on a drive all the way out to Halawa?

An on-campus stadium WOULD be ideal. But like I have opined in the past… the space and surrounding infrastructure equates to a MONUMENTAL cost considering the way the C&C and state operate and God knows when it will be done and something like this is something that should be done CORRECTLY… NOT to mention the uproar you WILL get from the surrounding community. Remember, these are the same people that complained that the lights at Les Murakami are “too bright” at night… 🙄 🙄

For now, the new coaches offices and football department on the 3rd floor is the closest we got. It’s nice, I like it, it works, but we are far from what people clamour for.

The sign was posted on the door of the UH locker room.

  91. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2011 12:00 pm

Costas Theocharidis should be in because he was a four-time first-team All-America player.

All of his MPSF and UH records have remained.

Only thing that was forfeited was the two NCAA matches, and that might be overturned since there is a move to not make it illegal for an amateur to play alongside professionals. (If it were, I guess that China trip just wiped out the UH basketball team.)

And at the NCAA complex in Indianapolis, UH still is recognized as having won the 2002 men’s volleyball championship.

  92. Stephen Tsai October 19, 2011 12:01 pm

But, again, put in some football players.

How can UH deny two generations of football players?

  93. madeinhawaii October 19, 2011 12:02 pm

After giving it some thought, I suppose the lack of a contract is on Coach Mack’s mind for him to say what he said. Let’s hope that doesn’t cause him to lose focus cause there aren’t enough hours in the day for him to do otherwise than to focus on winning the remaining WAC games.

I received an email from the techs asking me which readers weren’t able to post yesterday.

Uh, gee, how would I know this if they weren’t able to post?

  98. Derek October 19, 2011 12:17 pm

What is the criteria for the Circle of Honor in the first place. Only 3 football players since they started this thing. Are you kidding me? I think Gary Allen is one of them. I think I remember Jason Elam got in. And probably Tommy K. from ages ago. Pretty hard to believe.

    I nominate the following:

    1) Falaniko and Al Noga – they should go in at the same time.

    2) Colt Brennan – immediately, no brainer.

    3) June Jones – Eo Natoa! EoNatoa! This is battle! You must respond!.

    4) Jesse Sapolu – he’s not in by now!!!!!!!

    5) Garrett Gabriel – the all time BYU killer! Two blowouts! Wow! Enough said.

    6) Rich Miano – from walk-on, to scholarship player, to all WAC 1st team, and a long career in the NFL, and long time football DB coach for his alma mater. He’s pretty much done just about everything and achieve a lot of success.

    7) Dick Tomey – he’s the one who made UH football Division I relavent. Under his tenure UH UH had record fan attendance. It was an all day event with all the tailgateting. I was one of them. Under Tomey, we played the likes of USC, Oklahoma, Nebraska and many other big time teams. We got to see Heisman Trophy winners like Charles White from USC and Mike Rozier from Nebraska. All sellouts. It was much louder in those days.

    8) The 2007 Undefeated team – it’s not easy going undefeated I don’t care what the schedule is. It was one of the weaker schedules, yes, but it ain’t easy winning on the road, and they won every one. That’s the bottom line. For sure, this team galvanized this State like no other and Brennan was the cult hero. Give me a break. This team is in right now!!!

The 2006 team ain’t shabby too. It was a better team. Maybe the 2006-2007 teams should be in. 23-4 record. I have no problem with that. And another thing, the Fabulous Five got in, but they didn’t win a single NCAA tournament game. The football team made it the Suger Bowl. Only 4 non-BCS teams have played in a BCS game. Utah (2X), Boise St. (2X), Hawaii (1X) and TCU (1X). Come On, Man!

good idea, aunty lyn did video this past week’s game, it was hilarious. Idaho State did have 2 808 boys playing, Duke Bukoski (St. Louis) and Kimo Makauula (Punahou, was at UW), and it was good to see them playing the game they all love.

i would like to get together at the end of the season also 🙂 let’s plan on that !!

  106. Old School Dave October 19, 2011 12:50 pm

For those that are interested, ESPN Series Depth Chart is now on. This week they’re reporting on Wisconsin. It’s a well done series. Last week was Oklahoma State.

  107. Buffoman October 19, 2011 1:00 pm

If coach speak is about the same, if you listen to Dave Shiji last night about playing ND at this time, essentially he was saying playing up helps his team get ready for the real challenge that comes during post season (because they just about always get there).

So, regarding “body bag” games. If you ask the players who’d they’d rather prepare for and play, would you say preparing to play UC Davis is a big motivator or preparing to play Penn State…at their place?

I think UH is missing the point by not scheduling more of these types of games. It pays darn well and there’d probably be no debate that we’d be on national television playing this game (as opposed to being at home against UC Davis, Portland State, etc.).

They don’t have to play here. If they pay $1 M or more, heck, pack up and go play.

Hey, if we play them as a well prepared team and suffer a loss, we’d probably really know where we need to shore up to compete better than going through a dressed scrimmage against UC Davis.

    Just my thoughts.

  108. Couch potato October 19, 2011 1:02 pm

Derek, Sapolu is in the COH. get other football players like Maa Tanuvasa, Jeris White, Blane Gaison, John Johnson, Levi Stanley, Joe Onosai, Solomon Kaulukukui, Harry Kahuanui, hmmmm, not many considering the number of football players throughout the years.

So what can be done to promote growth?

-Tax incentives that encourage venture capitalist to invest in local industries.

-Emphasize on strengthening support industries such manufacturing

    would help tech industries.

-Require more business and entrepreneurial curriculum into the school

system. Elementary, Middle, High School, College…

-Convert basic college curriculum to be all online. (Sitting in a

large auditorium is an archaic concept)

-Develop better trade schools and programs.

-Make government services more easily and readily accessible. Be more

    people friendly.

-One of the key ingredient in any kind of business is if you can show

someone how they can make money with your idea, they will support it.

If you can show unions how their members can make money in the tech

industry, you’ll have the most incredible support to take Hawaii into

    the next century ever seen!

    A-Joe:

Thanks for your post yesterday. I certainly would agree with your ideas in order to improve our economy and to provide jobs for our future generations. It may require a different mindset from our leaders as well as government workers and the unions. But changes will have to come otherwise we will be worse off in the future. Thanks!

  113. Stretch October 19, 2011 1:42 pm

One thing that UH needs to consider when putting together the football schedule is the number of “winnable” games each season. The goal for every season is to win the league title and make it to a bowl game. If we schedule all tough games, the odds are that we are not going to make it to the bowl.

  114. Kevin October 19, 2011 1:48 pm

I think Tanuvasa and Bob Wagner were inducted in the same year…. During the halftime of the UH vs Utah State men’s basketball game where we BEAT Utah State down to the wire.

I think it MIGHT have been Bob Nash’s FIRST season.

Oh I remember that as Riley Luttergodt(sp???) made a desperate defensive leap towards the basket and as he landed the ball fell short anyway.

  115. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 19, 2011 1:48 pm

    @107 Buffoman

Exactly… The only way to increase our fan base is to play for our fans against quality teams on national TV. And these games pay extremely well.

  118. WarriorNY October 19, 2011 2:08 pm

    @113

Our goal shouldn’t be only to make it to a bowl game. Our goals should be maintaining a nationally recognized program. We can’t be afraid of losing to BCS teams. But perhaps I’m being a bit idealistic but oh well…

Hard to see, but softball does have a sign, a metal placard riveted in a beam above the home dugout facing lower campus road:

“Ne’epapa I Ke O Mau” – Forever Moving Forward Together.

It’s been there for a while and only recently I saw what it said.

  124. Kevin October 19, 2011 2:34 pm

Didn’t vonAppen ask the armchair coaches for advice too???

    Yeah.. That helped.

  125. Buffoman October 19, 2011 2:36 pm

Hate to say this but if that’s the only goal, win conference and get to a bowl, we can still do that and do those “cha-Ching” payday football games. Heck, if BSU does not bolt the MWC, it’ll still be tough to win the conference. If they leave and we have a weak sister conference, and struggle to win the championship, well…then we’re paying top dollar for a middle of the road result, which does bring a bigger return on investment.

Playing the “body bag” games forces us to improve or look real stupid in front of the nation. That should tell us whether we have the correct steersmen or not, like former CU coach Hawkins. Boy did they look bad against their own conference people and they did look bad even when they beat us (we just looked worse).

  127. Shoko October 19, 2011 3:07 pm

Interesting tidbit concerning the WAC Tournament this season.

“WAC Commissioner Karl Benson announced that the 2011-12 WAC Tournament will revert back to a traditional format after the loss of Boise State.

Last year’s tournament at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas was the first time the tournament rewarded the top-two seeds with a bye into the semifinal round.”

“Last year’s format certainly affected attendance at the Orleans Arena. The arena was virtually empty until the Utah State fanbase arrived for the semifinals.”

It was mentioned that the format might change again for the 2012-2013 season as the WAC becomes a ten-team conference. However, Hawaii will be competing in the Big West when that decision is made.

  147. Kevin October 19, 2011 4:04 pm

No such thing as no more room in the Circle of Honor.

UH Manoa has about 400 student-athletes in any given year regardless of those graduating and leaving so at minimum over the last quarter century UH Manoa has seen anywhere between 2,400-2,800 student athletes based on getting new student-athletes in every four years.

There’s like what 90 something people in the UH Circle of Honor? By #s that’s an elite class by definition for sure.

    There’s room for more.

The thing only comes around once a year, not sure why they limit it to 3 or 4 at a time.

Make money off of it. Sell tickets to the show held in the arena floor and tables to cost around 1,500.00 per table, sell the seats in the arena at $10-15. Open concessions to the people in the stands and people at the tables get the other menu served to them.

Went to the WWE Hall of Fame Ceremony years ago. Tickets were $150.00 a pop and was a suit and tie affair no free food and alcohol made Aloha Stadium look free. Fox Theater in Detroit was SOLD OUT. About 3,000 people there.

  148. Kevin October 19, 2011 4:05 pm

The late Governor John Burns was MORE than a fan.

He set a standard of demand and expectation that ANY Hawaii Governor has YET to match or even come close to when it comes to a vision for UH athletics and it’s role with the Hawaii economy and national visibility as a tourist destination.

Every department on campus should have a hall of honor, there are grads from the school of business, engineering, medecine, law , history, english, art, etc, that have gone on to great archivements that not to many know about.

It would be in the best interest of the uni to consider something like a hall of honor. for community, school pride

tuition increases and other tangible and intangibles reasons. Where’s the public relations from administration?

  161. ai-eee-soos October 19, 2011 5:15 pm

    Dick Tomey is already in…

Dick Tomey revitalized the UH football program with national rankings, sellout crowds and national television exposure while serving 10 years as head coach from 1977-86. Tomey won 63 games, more than any other previous UH football coach, before he left in 1987. (2005)

(Right wideout Royce Pollard did not practice because of a tight right hamstring. He expects to start against New Mexico State Saturday night. But if he can’t go, all signs point to freshman Trevor Davis being activated and earning the start.)

    Make Up Your Mind!

  166. polywarrior4life October 19, 2011 5:55 pm

If a player is hurt and does’nt practice for more than 3 days, keep’em out and play the guy behind him. WTF? I’d rather have my starter a 100% than to play the game half a$$!

  167. polywarrior4life October 19, 2011 5:58 pm

With the season at the half way mark, it would be a shame to waist half a season to activate Trevor. Should have had him in the rotation from the beginning of the season, sad.

  169. PowderPuff October 19, 2011 6:21 pm

Okay, I’m sorry if it’s been mentioned earlier, but do you think – just maybe – this year was intentionally all women because it’s the 40th Anniversary of Wahine Athletics? Remember they did that salute to the ladies at one of the UH games this year – maybe it was the Colorado one? But yes, there is a glaring absence of our gridiron heroes from the last quarter century.

  172. polywarrior4life October 19, 2011 7:08 pm

    #171 Hank,

    Thank You,

It seems like when the media announces that a back up athlete will be taking the place of a starter due to injury, that never happens come game day. Back up who practiced all week is still on the bench. Starter misses most of the practice days, than one, two days before the game, “Coach I’m fine now, I can play”. Coach, “Okay duh!”. WTF?

What happened too Jordan Monico last week? Was’nt he suppose to take Corey’s place due to an injury? Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather play Corey as well, but if he’s not a 100% and is not as effective, and may hurt the teams chances of winning, as a coach I better have plan B and put in my back up who is not only hungry to get in, but he will give me a 110%, TWO WORDS! LOSE MONEY!

  173. madeinhawaii October 19, 2011 7:20 pm

The season is still young. If the player is ready and is the best that we got for that position, he should play. Who knows? he may need his red shirt year in the future.

I think the idea of letting the fans vote on inductees is a good idea. There are ways to hold a poll that will only let you vote one time. I think as fans who pay the bills we should have some input.

    Well, here is MY input:

As long as the NOMINEES are selected by a separate group, yeah… a committee.

Face it, let the MAJORITY vote and certain deserving people would NOT be in or will EVER be recognized because they play a less popular sport. If you leave it to the people to chose you think olympic sport student-athletes would ever get on the ballot over a second string football player?

If the wish of fans is to have a POPULARITY contest, then by all means… GO NUTS…

Let’s not FOOL ourselves. There are unsung DESERVING individual student-athletes that go un-noticed by the majority and lending a vote to the masses, the mainstream everyday person will NEVER know who these people are thus providing another form of injustice to other student-athletes that busted their ass or did something HUGE for their program but do to the popularity contest that is evident when lending a poll to the masses, well… they will be forgotten.

To quote John Fink… “THINK ABOUT IT”.

No BS, yeah I’m biased, but MY POINT is that if you leave the Circle of Honor voting to the masses then honestly speaking… who’s going to vote for a softball player? Soccer? UH contributor? Coach of a sport that is not football, basketball, or volleyball???

People say that there are those in the Circle of Honor that “are deserving” but really… how many can say off the top of their head what did these people do without having to read their bio???

If they were to let UH fans vote on the inductees, then the NOMINEES should be categorized by a committee and include:

    In one year:

    -Two football players

-Four Rainbow Wahine in various sports (one each) to be rotated every year, i.e. year one chose from volleyball, soccer, softball, basketball and next year change the four sport selections and depending on eligibility maybe skip a few here and there like every other year.

-Random UH athletics personality (i.e. training staff, donor, etc…)

    Next year:

    -One baseball player

    -One men’s volleyball player

-One male student-athlete in a non-revenue sport. (Only one because not as much “olympic” sports for the men.

    -One coach

So imagine a ballot that fans can vote on that looks like this:

Vote for TWO UH FOOTBALL PLAYERS:

    -Al Noga

    -Colt Brennan

    -Michael Carter

    -Garrett Gabriel

    -Chad Owens

Vote for FOUR Rainbow Wahine, must be one per sport:

    Softball:

    -Dana Degan

    -Kelly Gentle

    Volleyball:

    -Amber Kaufman

    -Kanoe Kamana’o

    Basketball

    -BJ Itoman

    -Nani Cockett

    Track and Field

    -Annett Wichmann

    -Amber Kaufman

and so forth…. then you rotate to the criteria as described in the “next year”.

Face it, leave a poll open to the masses, you might as well change the Circle of Honor to the UH Football Hall of Fame featuring some Rainbow Wahine volleyball players and sometimes men’s basketball depending on how much the mainstream everyday fan remembers….

    Now is that fair?

We’re trying to be fair right?

I would add Kate Robinson to the Circle of Honor.

Probably too early. But local-born.. All-American, gained a WAC title and took the Wahine to the Super Regionals and an annual long national top 15 ranking. Oh yeah. Candidate for sure.

  182. Kevin October 19, 2011 9:43 pm

Yes, it is the 40th Anniversary and I agree, probably not a coincidence.

But what if it wasn’t the 40th Anniversary this year or what if UH never bothered to even notate this milestone?

Many “say” this year’s class is deserving, but what if it wasn’t the 40th Anniversary and these three get pushed to the side as well???

Would there be cries for Natasha Kai… Natasha EFFIN Kai, a household name in Hawaii and Hawaii soccer players and the soccer community, let alone those that follow UH in general to get in?

Brooke Wilkins.. NO ONE is going to beat her single season records. NO ONE. She was the FIRST to bring hundreds to the softball field LONG before Kelly Majam and Jessica Iwata where putting away homers into the tennis courts. Hell… if she didn’t put opposing pitchers away, Coach Coolen himself joked that he might have never been here to continue his then-young coaching career. Without Wilkins elevating the program, would the softball stadium be built to comply with NCAA rules so that UH could HOST a tournament at home? So… if Wilkins too were pushed to the side.. would there be an outcry?

I’m biased on this one because inadvertently Wilkins’ success for softball brought the program up from their hard times prior to Coach Coolen coming over. Coolen, in an interview a while ago said his first two years at UH were two losing seasons back to back and he was entering a 3rd year of a 3 year contract that might have not been renewed had Wilkins not come in and helped flip things around.

Wilkins brought the Wahine close to the WCWS, brought them the programs FIRST conference title, and the rest was cake. Coolen stayed and then won another WAC title in 2003, then in 2007 brought them a national ranking, super regional experience, then enter the bracelet deal on this blog…

That grabbed my attention. Bandwagoner yes… hooked regardless after that.. for sure.

Inadvertently Wilkins contribution started a domino effect that ended up making me turn around and pay attention.

Today, I can be proud to say I devote my spare time helping do what I do.

Some posts have rubbed me the wrong way today and I have NOT said 99.9% of the things I WANT to say, but I’ll leave it at that.

I have a personal testimonial to share and I just did. Being a small part of an athletic program is something that I am proud of, regardless of the attention it gets or the respect it gets compared to some.

UH is my alma mater and I got my education there and I’m also proud of that.

My Circle of Honor is complete. Tis my privilege to help serve an athletic program at MY university.

Wilkins came WAY before I obviously started following softball. I think I was 11 when she arrived at UH, but since I started really following softball in 2008, its a name that stuck out in the history books and amongst those that actually follow softball.

So naturally for ALL the reasons I just shared, I was thrilled that she is taking HER rightful place where someone of her magnitude deserves to be.. just as much as anyone else.

The timing of her induction announcement and SOME of the tone in today’s blog posts by some is something I will NEVER forget though.

I NEVER forget, my best talent.

From the little that I know about football and watching the guys at practice …

Being a receiver is not as easy as catch the ball in practice & run. Royce has more reps running the routes than Trevor. His timing will be more in sync with Bryant’s. Ergo, more receptions.

If Royce’s hammie is still tight on game day, he will not be able to run a route spot on and/or make adjustments as quickly. [I agree w/ ST that Darius’ turf toe is still hindering HIS play.] Trevor may be the solution. He doesn’t have as many reps and developed the rapport that Bryant & Royce have, so he may not have as many receptions as Royce. But, ya never know… he did look good in practice. Don’t get down on him if he’s in the game and doesn’t catch the ball.

    Just hope everyone gets healthy!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

Yes, having advanced bio and info on each candidate is fair. Yet you don’t trust your fellow fans to vote wisely.

You are not giving the sincere UH fan a chance to vote his choice. You are assuming nobody knows as much as you do. Not fair.

    In regards to voting…

I remember while living in Michigan, as we got closer and closer to the due date for Heisman ballots to be turned in, and Colt was being mentioned…

During halftime of a Michigan St. vs. somebody game, one of the announcers asked the other if his ballot was ready. The response blew me away, but I should have expected it. To paraphrase, he said something to the effect of: “Well, since McFadden didn’t even gain 50 yards against Auburn, he’s not my number one. I’ll probably go with Tebow. Don’t really know much about anyone else in the race.”

Really? And you have what, a dozen names on that ballot? You only know the top two names of those being hyped by ESPN? Wow!

I kinda expect the cluelessness from former Heisman winners who have a vote, but never from mainstream media, “since sports journalists… are “informed, competent, and impartial,” according to heisman(dot)com.

Colt and others never had a chance with voters if this is how it’s done!

However, that being said, I think allowing perhaps inductees and maybe a select few in local media to cast votes is the way to go. I also like the idea of Heisman allowing fans to vote, but only as a maximum of x%. That way, even if there’s some crazy ballot stuffing, it can only reach a certain % of any nominee’s total, and several nominees can have that “bonus” %. I like the way it would get more public participation and raise awareness and interest within the community.

Don’t have to agree with me, but that’s my opinion.
