Playing the percentages
In the debate against football, it has been argued that head coach Greg McMackin is outrageously overpaid while volleyball coach Dave Shoji is outrageously underpaid.
But here’s a look at the numbers: McMackin’s base salary ($1.03 million) accounts for 8.9 percent of the $11.6 million revenue the football program is credited with generating. Shoji’s listed base salary ($179,438) is 8.2 percent of the Rainbow Wahine’s credited revenue of about $2.2 million.
In seeking an extension, McMackin has offered to lower his base to $850,000 a year, which would place his salary at 7.3 percent of the Warriors’ revenue. UH has sought to lower the base to a high of $700,000, which would be 6 percent.
Football’s credited revenue is 40 percent of the athletic department’s overall budget. Women’s volleyball is credited with contributing 7.6 percent.
Statistical comparisons, of course, can be interpreted to fit any argument. Which is what I just did.
What UH needs to do is not look at other schools or money lists. It needs to determine what value it places on a coaching position. If it wants to pay a basketball coach more or a football coach less, that’s fine, as long as it sets its own value system as opposed to letting other schools dictate the market.

Great post above that puts things in perspective dollar-wise with the coaches. What bothers me is that the $11M in revenue mentioned above is projected to decrease with the conference realignment, isn’t it?
On the football side of decision making: if we swap coaches there is no guarantee that the new coach would be a run-and-shoot system coach, and I believe UH has recruited towards that end.
I love Coach Mac’s love of the state, people, UH, and his players and coaches. His care and concern is genuine. He has helped to raise his team’s APR scores. I understand that there are many that compare him to what the big schools are doing. I remember wanting that Kikaida doll from Arakawas just because the kid across the street got one. But, our family’s priorities and resources weren’t the same as those of the kids across the street. For us, family, church, school, and sitting in the yard every day to pull weeds were more important. So, that’s what we did. Never mind that the family across the street used chemicals on their yard to kill the weeds. That wasn’t how we did it in our yard.
We just need to get back to winning and keep winning.
We need to play with more intensity, like our defense did Friday night. We need to be like that in all three phases, plus the coaches.

I think any one of us can take a machete to the athletic department budget.

But I’ve always believed that an athletic department — or any business — should go in the other direction and try to find ways to generate more money rather than slash budgets.
It should go back to basics. Instead of hitting up people at $100-a-plate dinners, stage $20 or $10 dinners. And instead of high-priced auction items, have smaller items, like game-used gloves. First, in this economy, UH needs to be sensitive to people who want to help but are on limited budgets. And, second, I think everyone should feel they can afford to bid on something at an auction. So maybe it’s old equipment or baseballs, but there’s money in the masses.
Going back to our kicking game…
I understand that most times, a backup QB is used as the holder, just in case a funny play is wanted or needed. But, maybe we could use a speedster with hands, like a speedy WR or DB, who could actually chase down someone that’s trying to advance a kick the opposite direction. I mean, we haven’t tried a fake field goal in like a hundred years or so. So, what’s the harm?
Word on the street is Tony Tuioti gave an inspiring halftime speech that inspired the defense.

ST, maybe UH needs to open up a booth, (or drive that mobile machine like the one Rainbowtique uses), over at the Stadium Swap Meet. The Stadium should not charge them for the space, and they could sell all kinds of old, used stuff there. At least try it out on a one month trial basis, and see what kinds of money and interest it generates.
One of the great opportunities was when the Warriors switched from Nike to Under Armour. Lot of disposable products after that. And UH can always claim that all gloves sold were worn by Davone Bess or Greg Salas.
Would be cool to have them sell old stuff, and have autograph sessions tied to it. They used to do stuff like that for Pro players while we were in Michigan, but I don’t know the inside workings of the deal. As long as we don’t use current college students, I think we should be okay. There were set prices for autographs, depending on who it was.

The 2 things I posted are not contradictory. The MWC’s Commissioner and CUSA’s Commissioner said that both conferences would not change their TV contracts even after the alliance. Maybe that is because of the nature of how the contracts were written, plus the contracts cover more than just football while the alliance is only for football.
Pres. Kustra is probably correct that *every* MWC school is unhappy with their TV contract. Lack of replays drove BYU away, they didn’t even care about the money as much as others. I’m sure that JD doesn’t like the MWC’s TV contract, as it will cost UH millions of dollars if it kills PPV.
So, every MWC school doesn’t like the MWC’s TV contract and feels they are underpaid by CBS/Comcast. But Craig Thompson says that the contract will be unchanged until it ends (2016 at the earliest). That just seems to indicate that the MWC signed a bad TV contract and committed themselves for 10 years with no out clauses. That is bad for UH.
So if we go by revenue to determine coach’s salaries, doesn’t that mean that women’s soccer, softball, rowing, track & field, etc., should get coaches that work for free? Football HAS to make a big profit or UH cannot afford the nonrevenue sports required by Title IX…
I thought UH wanted to cut Mack to $650k…if they are asking him to go to $700k, that is higher than Pat Hill’s $650k and something like double what Nevada pays their coach. Football revenue will take a big decrease in TV and will be paying travel subsidies. UHAD won’t get their WAC payout this year but none of the coaches will get extra reductions due to that.

I find it interesting that UH made more from TV last year than Washington State! The WAC+PPV got UH nearly $3 mil, while Washington State got just $2.7 mil from the Pac-10’s TV deal plus their local TV deal. Unfortunately, UH’s PPV money could go away completely while Washington State will be getting $15 mil next year and soon will be over $25 mil from TV.
I am shocked that UH has been making more TV money than Washington State all these years…no wonder Washington State couldn’t compete in the Pac-10.

Contract negotiations at UH really look like traffic accidents in Hawai’i.
A bunch of folks stand around, measuring, talking, pointing, talk some more, while a couple of them wave the resultant traffic by saying, “Everything is under control. There is nothing to see here.” But, the wrecks are still there 2-4 hours later and the traffic backs up for miles. In the meantime, the folks on the road are upset because they are going to miss important deadlines and clients will get away.

Yeah, I don’t think Coach Mack is an issue. Sign him up at the reduced rate and get on with it. What would be disastrous is sitting on the bottom of MWC/C-USA with a set of crappy TV deals.

Here I go again, and some very basic tackling drills, please.
Just looking at today’s paper and seeing how the top 4 played, one cannot help but notice that the reason they are at the top is largely due to their ability to be consistent in the htree areas. They score like crazy, keep the other teams from scoring (the worse was Okla who gave up 17) and had great special teams play.
Also watched games yester day and heard time and again the commentators speaking of how the folks are making “text book tackles” wrapping up the runners and in some cases because of that caused turnovers.
When we get to consistently play like this, we may not be top 10, but we won’t look like #83.
One thing i noticed watching the top teams play was the amount of talent they had. We have some talent but their rosters are over flowing with it.
Top four has a more talented pool of players (speed and agility). Warriors got to make due with what they got. However, I agree tackling is fixable as is special teams play. 😉
Oh, I hope the Niners can pull out a win. That would be awesome!

Well, UH Football has lost 50% of their games!
Roughly 43% of their special teams efforts (kicking / punting), have been blocked!
It’s rare, very rare college football that an extra point be blocked and return by the other team for 2-points, well, it’s happened twice this season to the Warriors, what’s the odds / percentages on that ever happening?

Virginia Hinshaw gave McMackin a 1000% raise to replace June Jones as head coach at UH. He was making $110,000 as D.C. and had never, ever, been a college head coach before (Oregon Tech – but c’mon now).
Now really, talk about bad business!

How ’bout Jones was “on the books” at UH for $400,000 annually, left after a 12-0 season and the schools’ first ever trip into a BCS Bowl. How in God’s name does the next guy get well over 100% more money than that with record accomplishments?

I honestly believe people would tolerate such “heartbreak” losses much better if the salary involved was far less obscene, or, for that matter, earned and deserved.

Coaches are doing an amazing job at the recruits we do get and getting the most out of them. I feel we can continue to do what we are doing and do it well.. but if we wanna go “Boise” on people – recruiting has got to be the bigger picture in this program.

In many of the labor disputes or arbitrations or fact-finding, one key component has been the argument of “equal pay for equal work” – or what does X get for doing the same job as I do.
I’m not saying that this is a right approach but it is one that the labor unions have used in their negotiations with the State/City/private employees.
When JJ left for SMU, times were bleak and whatever contract was made at that time is past history. Let’s stop trying to re-write history. It’s useless to argue “should have”, “could have” etc.
Perhaps it is naive on my part, but have Coach Mac and the UH considered splitting the baby in half – he wants $850 and the UH wants only to give $650, why not split it to $750 plus incentives.
If we are offering a 3-year deal to Coach Arnold and he wants 5 years, make it a firm 4 year deal plus 1 and 1 if certain criteria is met.
But let’s get it done before we get into another crisis situation such we had when June left for SMU.

And yes I have been attending to at least 9 home home games out of the year every year for quite some time. I mostly likely still will. But I’m beginning think otherwise now. No excitement anymore.
I believe many people feel like I do in that Coach Mack is a very nice person. I appreciate some of the things he does off the field like give his condolences to the family of a UH fan who recently passed.
If UH’s expectations are to win the conference, have a winning record and go to the Hawaii Bowl, then his pay should be reduced to $500-$600K if that’s what the budget allows. If the expectations are to defeat better than average BCS teams (i.e. Washington) consistantly and win the conference, then we need to look for a new HC as Coach Mac has not accomplished this.
Let’s not forget Coach Mac also gets a money from his TV show, free use of a car (I believe his wife also gets free use of her own as well), and things (monies?) from Na Koa. We have a couple people who post on this site who are affiliated with Na Koa who could provide some insight as to what Coach Mac receives from the organization.
With regards to recruiting, I don’t believe we will get the NFL-caliber players such as Pisa, Davone, Salas, etc. These players came because of June. I don’t see any players of that caliber on this year’s team nor do I see them coming because they want to play for the current coaches.
If there are problems, you make adjustments. Period.

Even if you had someone who had visions like Chris Petersen as head coach, he’d still be stuck in the mire of what is called UH ADMIN and its Self-Autonomy that makes it hard for the Athletic Department to ask for legislative help. We have a government that has squeezed every penny it can away from the education budget and has left all of our State schools in such disrepair that we are all hurting for it. Those dreams would soon be but pipe dreams and reality would set in and a couple of seasons later, he’d be looking elsewhere to fulfill those dreams.
And maybe that’s why Mack is the ideal coach. One who is taking things slowly from the ground up. Building the coaching staff by taking on seasoned mentors at a fraction of their values to guide young coaches like Rolo, Aranda, Tuioti and company. When Coach Mack’s salary is put under consideration, one has to look at the entire coaching package, not just his salary. How much for all the Coaches?

Really what is the true story on Hinshaw resigning. A very strong supporter for UH Athletics going and gone.
Goes to show that the upper campus has no inclination to build UH athletics especially the way they do things or not do things. Intellectual brain performance overpower the physicality of body performance.
Yet academics at UH is no where near the top of universities across the country. Meaning that the intellectuals that are running UH are playing the survival game of me. No one else really matters. I have my agenda and we of this mind set will continue the process. Also we can’t have coaches make a lot more money than us.
In order for change and growth in both areas UH needs a leader to mesh the two together and have a long term plan for overall success. An image and a blueprint for all supporters to follow. Based on attitude and leaders current and past it is and will always be a struggle. Academically do some believe we are an IVY league school and can compete with them? Athletically do some believe we are a BCS team and compete with them? I hate to say neither.
UH seems to have the same mindset like our state and city politics. Not what’s good for the people and community but what’s good for me and my livelihood.

Big East has been on the brink of losing their AQ status for several years. Year after year former commissioner Mike Tranghese have gotten on his knees and begged for reprieves from his Old Boys ties within the BCS committee. Current commissioner Marinatto has no ties and has run the conference into the ground. With Pittsburgh and Syracuse bolting, the BE is left with only 6 subpar football members. The Big East is ready to sell it’s soul to Boise. They need Boise to survive. Boise doesn’t need them.

I don’t begrudge anyone earning what they earn. You can only get what an employer is willing to pay. If somebody’s first offer is about eight times what you were previously earning, you’d better sign quickly.

It appears UH is willing to pay the football coach the current amount — $700,000 plus incentives that could bring it up to $1.1 million — if it matches last year’s feats. Basically, UH’s negotiation stance is it paid appropriately for last season but not for this season.
The point should be is that UH needs to figure out the value it wants to set for a coach’s salary in anticipation of the type of performance range it expects. It could be any amount — higher, the same or lower — but it has to be a fixed rate void of future regrets and not based on what others place the value of their coaches.
That said, six blocked kicks (and I count more) is not acceptable.
And how is Haku?

The crash was a significant setback for Colt Brennan, who is training in Arizona.

somehow the o line is taking flack which is not true. it is the qb’s job to get rid of the ball in 2-3 seconds, but see how long it takes for him to get rid of the ball. imho, he cannot see his receivers because the height of the o line or he is too locked into one receiver. the qb running is his own problem because he holds on to the ball too long. don’t blame the o line.

A good QB with all the time in the world will look like a Heisman candidate. In last night’s Oregon Ducks game the QB, under pressure, rolled right and made a fantastic TD toss…on the run. Perhaps our receivers don’t know how to help the QB by finding the open lane/spot. But I think they do.

LC, reference the crash at las vegas and seems that the drivers and owners had major complaints prior to the crash. one of their major complaints was that the track was not made to handle that many cars and by doing that, it was asking for troubles.

Whitey, this is read type offense. The O line has to give enough time for the QB to get through at least two of the four reads. There’s very few set routes. It’s not like the line breaksdown on every snap but other teams have been able to apply a decent amount of pressure without blitzing.
If you checkout the replays of the games count how many times Mo has to stepup in the pocket or move around to avoid the rush. The thing is he’s moving around with his eyes down field looking for an open man. He keeps a lot of plays alive without resorting to running every time he’s flushed. Think back to our last fulltime QB starter. There were several game where Alexander(a non running QB) led the team in rushing attempts. Mo should be lauded for his play so far although his arm strenght does get exposed at times.
He’s our only real offensive weapon that other teams fear. Protect him.
Don’t think the whole project needs to be blown up. But I would suggest these things:
• Every coach needs to recruit.
• And work year-round in Hawaii.
• The top five local recruits need to be identified, and UH needs to land at least one of them. And then two of the top 10. And three of the top 15. Minimum.
• If there’s going to be a big Hawaii gathering, bring the cheerleaders.
• Cut ticket prices for Saturday’s game.
Well, let’s look at the long haul – what people call the “big picture”.
If we retain the present coach for at least two years, we can at least preserve the recruiting period for 2012/2013 while we look for the leader that will lead us to the promise land. We obviously cannot find that leader by wishful thinking – it takes planning or perhaps a heck of a lot of luck. And it will involve $$.
If we wish to terminate the present coach, I’ll be willing to chip in, say $500, even though I live from social security to social security check, but another 5,000 of us must be willing to do so NOW (5,000 x$500=$2.5mil).
as a practical matter, if one wants to think in those terms, perhaps 20,000 people should toss in $500 and end the athletic department’s deficit instead.
As a practical matter, unless we are willing to put our money where our mouth is, we should stop belly-aching.

The ‘Cats at WSU had a great game against Idaho State, 39-12. The D line had 8 sacks, ‘the beast’ had 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, and recovered a blocked punt on the 16 yard line. ISU total rushing yards was -1, negative 1 yard rushing. All the 808 boys did very well, Hoke 7-12 for 200+ yards, 200 yards rushing,Kehano had 3 catches and 2 TD’s……great game, great homecoming, and now we head home tomorrow morning 🙂

Watching the Oregon/Arizona St., game last night, what really impressed me is when the Ducks rb&qb went down to injuries, the replacements were inserted and it seemed like the Ducks never missed a beat!, infact, seems like the entire team got a boost!?…dat being said…I think UH needs to start inserting qb’s who will be up next-year, and give them more playing time; Moniz looked like he was not in sinc in the 1st-half and could have used a breather. Hope the coaches don’t delay and wait till next year and say then that their qb’s don’t have enough experience, la-la-la!!???

We don’t necessarily have it. But neither do many, many BCS teams.
In the year that Brian Kelly bolted for ND after a terrific season at Cinccy, he told reporters that he could go against ANY team in the nation. Bama, LSU, Florida, you name it….for ONE game, for ONE week.
Many of the 1st string players in college ball are in the same realm…in the 2nd/3rd string you get to see why Bama is Bama, LSU is LSU. They are almost as good as their 1st string.

One of the issues I see is that if UHAD is pressed on paying $600K-$700k for a coach, regardless of who we can get then we narrow our choices imo.
If its just that we want to pay Mack $600K but would be willing to pay Coach X more then thats a different story.

Observation on our team – during the last min. when we where in the Hail Mary mode, players were lined along the sideline with arms interlocked as one, win or loose. Showed me that they are still believers in themselves as a team and Ohana.
I don’t believe we as fans are more disappointed in their performance than each player.
Until I see that the team does not respond to or as a group demand a change in their coach(s) guess I’ll continue to support the team and coach’s.
Being in Morro Bay enjoying the fresh air, food and drinks helps with my disappointment in San Jose –

I don’t many here would say coack Mack is not a publicly nice guy (most don’t know what he’s like in the lockerroom). I believe what Matt Boy is saying is that the record just does not equate to salary (current) and what he may be wanting going forward.
If we want a nice guy and inconsistent play where we have mistakes as we’ve seen, we can have that, just not at a pay grade that yells out we deserve better.
In a previous response to my post regarding how the top 4 played. I was by any stretch of anyone’s imagination referring that our tough, hard playing team was at the same level as those of the top four. I was stating that if our coaches taught our team the fundamentals of blocking and tackling, special team play, basic fundamentals which seem to be what those top four do over and over again, we would not be having conversations about loosing to UNLV or SJSU, and maybe UW for that fact.
MY point was that we do not appear to have that and what has resulted is what we have. I feel bad of our boys who play hard and want to represent well. “Hard to build a house if you don’t have the right tools.”
Regarding the spot, that replay is hard to get a good feel for where the spot should be. The announcers made a point to remind the viewers that the yellow line is not necessarily the first down marker but only a reference. When Iosefa went down it appeared that the nose of the ball may have hit right on the yellow reference line. After the ball hit the ground he moved his arm and the ball forward. However, it is difficult to say if it was a good spot or a bad spot. Mac should have called for a review of the spot. The failure to do so is on him.
In the end, there were too many horrible plays by UH to say that just one play or another was pivotal.
Special Teams helped K State and the Oakland Raiders win their games.
Yesterday, K State blocked two field attempts by Texas Tech and Lockett returned a 99 yard KO for a TD.
Today, Oakland faked a field goal, holder Lechler threw a TD to Kevin Boss who started on the line to block. Jacoby Ford ran back a 101 yard KO.
Both teams won by 7, ST played a major role.
On the K State game, Guidry blocked both FG attempts coming up the middle. The ESPN commentators said TT linemen made an adjustment, to seal the gap they were crossing each others legs to cut off the open lane.
Don’t think how important getting the right Head Coach? You can point to the following:
1) Jim Harbaugh for the 49ers over Mike Singletary. You gotta be kidding, right. Yes, Singletary is a Hall of Famer (player), but there is no comparision as a coach. Harbaugh has a proven track record of taking a down program into excellence, evidenced by his stints at UC San Diego and at Stanford. He recruits, molds, and tutors QBs into great players. Evidenced by Josh Johnson at UC San Diego who is now with the Tampa Bay Bucs and Andrew Luck at Stanford who will be the #1 pick in the 2012 draft (guarantee). Look at how the Niners play now. WOW!!! They seem to have the swagger that lacked before. The #1 thing that the 49ers do now is that they run the ball well. Alex Smith is not Aaron Rodgers, but Harbaugh works with him to play within himself and not try to have everything
on his shoulders which can add even more stress. Harbaugh is great at evaluating talent and his vision to put places in the right position. Two examples, Owen Marecic and Bruce Miller, two former linebackers in college who Harbaugh had them playing fullback. Blocking is very underrated. Just watch how the 49ers block now compared to before. No comparison.
I’m a 49ers die hard fan and I’m stoked. We have the perfect Head Coach now and his brother ain’t bad either. Can you say playoffs? We won’t get Andrew Luck in the next draft but Harbaugh and his coaches and scouts will have a strong draft anyway, I’m certain. Look at their 2011 draft class, most of them made the team and many of them are playing a lot of snaps, ie Bruce Miller, starting fullback, Kendall Hunter, runnng back, Chris Culliver, CB, Aldon Smith, DE and at least 5 or 6 draftees or free agents are reserves, including Colin Kaepernick, QB.
2) Chris Peterson – Yeah, Boise St. was already a successful program and Dan Hawkins did very well there. But, you have to believe that Chris Peterson is the brain that makes everything work. He’s taken the Bronces to places that nobody thought they were this good for so long. It’s quite unbelievable. Boise State, in the Top 10 almost every year?
Are you kidding me!!! I am so impressed with Boise State that I recently bought a Boise St. cap in Las Vegas. No to mention, they cover the point spread most of the time, hehe.
3) Brian Kelly, Notre Dame – he’s another guy that has taken his teams to greater heights. First at Central Michigan where they won multiple MAC championship, then at Cincinnati where he won the Big East and took his team to a BCS Bowl. Remember, Cincinnati who came to Aloha Stadium and beat UH after UH had a big lead. Kelly is a fiery coach and is a great coach. Because of his work at CMU and UC, he landed the job at Notre Dame.
After 2 straight close losses to begin the season against S. Florida and Michigan, Notre Dame
has recovered to win 4 straight against Michigan St. (convincingly), Pudue, Pittsburgh, and Air Force. Next week they will play at home against USC and I like the Irish in that game. I wouldn’t be surprised if Notre Dame win the rest of their games to finish 10-2. With that record he could land a BCS bowl bid. Kelly has something that Harbaugh and Petersn all have in common. They all know how to win with how they hire coaches, a strong work ethic, evaluating and recruiting players, coaching them, teaching them, strong leadership, and knowing that plays will work. Want more examples?
4) How about June Jones! How ’bout them Ponies? Jones has proven that he’s taken bad programs from the outhouse to the penthouse. At one point Hawaii and SMU was at the bottom of the barrel. You could say Jones is a miracle worker. He himself expereinced a miracle by surviving a car crash. If you saw the car wreck no way he could have survied that. But he did, and he took our team to an undefeated season in 2007 and took us to the Sugar Bowl. There were 4 miracle wins that year agianst at La Tech in OT, at San Jose St. in OT, at Nevada in OT, and at home against Washington when we were down 21-0 in the first quarter and we won 35-28. Jones also beat Boise St. that year for propel to a WAC championship w/ a perfect record. This year, SMU has already beaten TCU who is very good and went to the Rose Bowl last year, and Central Florda who won the Conference USA title last year. I guess Jones and his team is making amends. For me, I miss June Jones. He has that confidence in him and he believes in what he does and know he has a great eye for evaludating talent. Look at Greg Salas, Davone Bess, Colt Brennan, Pisa Tinoisamoa, Ryan Grice-Mullins, Michael Lafaele, and Ryan Mouton. Look at Jones’ SMU team now. He has landed a lot of good players for his program. SMU is now 5-1 with the only loss to Texas A&M which is not a bad loss. In fact, TA&M started the season being ranked a high as #7. Two close losses to Oklahoma St. and Arkansas derailed the Aggies but those 2 teams are not shabby. I can see Texas A&M winning their rest of their games, including beating Oklahoma. I’m not impressed with Oklahoma’s play yesterday against Kansas.

Blocking extra points is becoming a big deal. USC puts Matt Kahil in the center as blocks are made by defenders to allow his 6’7″ frame to extend very long arms into the kick tragetory zone. Tomey either is locked in a time warp of yesteryear or suffering from early onset alzeimers as this special teams performance continues.
Special teams need energy, focus and a plan. Maybe this former head coaching great considers this assignment beneath him.
Whatever, I predict a change in this area and soon or coach Mack will have to answer.

Again, Pilares and Salas may be in the NFL and JJ’s recruits.. (don’t know who recruited them specifically)… but they developed into exceptional players under Coach Mack.
They also moved into the slot positions under Mack, not JJ. Salas was a Wide Receiver until 2009 when he moved to slot and started to really catch everyone’s attention. Pilares was a RB till he moved to slot in 2008 (under Mack) and started to garner attention too. Both were underweight and really built themselves up for their final season under Mack and Hefferman…
I don’t know if they would have done as well under Mel deLaura.
I read an article in the SA sometime back, in the editorial page, where a Hawaii resident was complaining about all the publicity given to UH athletics and a large article about the offer to Coach Gib to extend this contract.
Monku, monku, monku. If he felt that the “academic” side needed the publicity, then start a drive somehere to get the press/tv, etc to make academic achievement the “glory” at UH. Certain parts of the academic system was given props when “cloning” was accomplished and several times when large “grants were awarded to UH academics.
Yes, we do not hear about “salary” for profs – maybe they would be willing to share with the general public what they are being paid and what they want – however, this would be against “union” rules – would it not?
Thus the question, who has greater influence in bringing $$$ to UH – the dean of a school or UH coach? who teaches more students to be better individuals – a UH prof or UH coach? does a prof teach and preach “ohana” to students? not in my days and don’t believe they do it now – why, because it’s not in their job description.
My worst prof was a lady who came in, told us to read 2 or 3 chapters, left for a meeting with her business “partners” (other UH profs). Next class, her only question was “any questions”; okay, read the next 2 chapters. This went on for the entire semester. Wonder how much she was being paid?
The Mustangs are doing well under Mel DeLaura S/C, 5-1, one more win and they are bowl eligible.

Congrats to tson of Tsaikette Nalani for the great game he played this last week.
Nalani, is Kahai’s little brother going to be a Warrior at the next level too? He’s got the skills, methinks.
Sorry, I didn’t quite finish. My point is, look at how our UH Warriors played so far. As you look back we have 20/20 vision. How is our coaching? How good is our strategies? How good are the coaches in making game adjustments. What grade would you give to the coaches?
1) Our win at home against Colorado was a good win to start. But, there were questions how good is Colorado. Well, after 6 games, they are not very good. They are 1-5 with their only win against Colorado St. who is even worse than the Buffaloes.
2) Washington – we played very hard against them, but falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter, again and it was an uphill battle all day. It was astonishing to me that Washington had so many big plays for long yardage against us. And, I do happen that Steve Sarkisian is a very, very good coach and he’s taken a down program to on the upswing. One of his strengths is play calling and what works in certain situations.
3) Losing at UNLV is the bottom of the pits. Yeah, maybe they caught us in a “trap” game but we are not supposed to lose by 20 points as 20 point favorites. As it turned out, UNLV’s win against us is their lone win to date. In all the other games, UNLV has been blown out, including against Southern Utah at home, 41-16. Upsets happen, I know, but I don’t like the way we played. Did you? I didn’t think so.
3) UC Davis – UH played solid, but you have to remember who’s the competition. Still, it was a positive as we went to the next game.
4) La Tech – this is probably our best game so far, winning on the road in a tough place to
and traveling so far. I came out feeling after that game that maybe we have turned the corner as far as playng a pretty complete football game. But alas,
5) San Jose St. – I knew it would be a tough game if you looked at SJSU scores against UCLA and BYU. the Spartans were very compeitive and we in the games until very late in the both games, because losing. Calamity of UH. Fumbilitis, Fumbalaya!!!! Interceptions including a pick 6 by SJSU which was called back because of a penalty. Blocked kicks! I can’t count after 2 of them. It was frustrating. Yet, the team played tough an came back.
We had control of that game and should have won, but it “let em off the hook”. To me, the responsibility is sqaurely on the coaching. I would have gone for the first down at 4 and 1 to seal the game. We played the conventional way and it was suppposely smart by punting, leaving San Jose St. with a little less than 2 minutes left in the game. I didn’t feel good because SJSU was moving the ball against us all day long. They only stopped themselves with turnovers. We didn’t “really” stop em. You know what happend. And I don’t understand why we didn’t challenge the stop of the ball after the 3rd down play when I saw the replay and I thought Iosefa had the ball over the line to pick up the first down. Game over. Second, why didn’t UH try to get SJSU offsides to get 5 yards to get the first down. It was worth the try. I don’t understand the thinking. Even so, failing the first 2 possibilities I would have gone for the first down to get the 1 yard. My thinking is, the “feel” of the game felt like maybe the last team to get the ball would win. You play to win the game!!!! Coaches get money to take risks. I would rather have a coach to be bold in the attempt rather than being conservative. In stocks, being conservative you make “some” money. Take more risks and you either get burned or you can get the big payoff. Which one would you rather have? I guess only young people can stand to lose because they have much time to make up for it. Older people don’t have much time so they are conservative by nature and that is understandable. Would Steve Sarkisian, Paul Johnson, or Urban Meyer have punted? I don’t think so. June Jones, I don’t think either. Coaches prepare the players in practice to run plays that will work in certain situations. That’s by they have practice, right. What would Nick Rolovich have done? I really want to know. For real. M
Maybe it’s time to have a younger coach who is a breath of fresh air and can bring some new strategies and some much needed energy and enthusiasm. Such a person that comes to mind is Brian Harsin, Offensive Coordinator at Texas who was the Of. Coordinator at Boise St. until he moved this year. Somebody like that. Is Rolovich the right guy? I don’t know.

Boise did a remarkable growth spurt, but everyone forgets where they get their kids. They used to go to Long Beach State, Cal State Fullerton, LA State, Chico State, San Francisco State, Cal State East Bay, Sonoma State, all no longer giving hundreds of scholarships. UH benefited somewhat from the Title 9 demise of those programs but Boise had a little easier admissions hurdle.
Thats my biggest fear for Mack – agents already making contact, people in the know getting excited about someone that they believe has the energy and the selling power for recruits to be part of a special program, yada, yada, yada..
Something not right, this aint about $650k or $800k. Why would you want to seemingly kill your programs recruiting, off field drama, etc? Seems like somebody wants to take a big momentous leap forward and lead the program to the next level and I am betting the Boosters will make money come out of their ass to partner in and make that happen.
from a fan prospective I a lousy critic of Mack early on. I’m a fan of Mack now because i like the fight in the old man. We came really close on some talented recruits over the last 4 years. Change mind at last minute close.. had we landed them, I think Mack would not be in this situation. I hope he gets his extension and he gets to ride off into the Hawaiian Sunset and pass the program off to one of his assistants. Uh, ST, you say not signing coach mack is hurting recruiting. i may be wrong but aren’t most of the leaders and starters on the team walk ons? seems to indicate that coaches either not very good at recruiting and evaluating talent, or not recruiting great talent and settling for the mediocre. we might as well just wait for the walk ons… and take the approach of the basketball coach and go for the blue chips and hope and pray that upper campus lets them in.
Nothing against our players now, I bleed green and white and black! and support them all the way. something must be wrong internally for the team to lose games that should be won.
IF there is a need to hire a new coach, head or assistant, I hope they choose “younger” guys who are HUNGRY to prove themselves. It seems we have veteran coaches who are just collecting a paycheck until they retire. We need more guys like Tuioti who are able to fire up and inspire the guys. If they feel they want him at a reduced rate, and want to start naming a successor following an extension, then make an offer.
If they feel that he is not their guy, then make that decision, buy him out and name a successor.
But deciding not to decide is needlessly hurting recruiting.
Suppose they don’t want to give him an extension. Then he’s going to enter a lame-duck year.
Suppose they decide they don’t want him. Then they have to find the money to buy him out, convene a search committee (because that’s what they do best), hire a coach, then assemble a staff, then identify recruits, then recruit within a month. And if the new coach wants to bring in his own staff, then the school will be paying for two staffs for several months.
Again, make a decision.
Actually, 18 of the 22 offensive and defensive starters in the San Jose State game started their UH careers on scholarship.
UH should be 5-1 now, and it lost two games it should have won, but the situation isn’t as dire as it seems. There is a lot of talent on the roster and coaching staff.
But, again, protect the kicker.
It’s actually 19 of 23 if you count Mike Sellers as the starting quarter.
I’m a true blue Worrior fan. I don’t publically point finger and blame, when things go wrong . Some times all it takes to help solve problems is clearing and organizing the players minds . Too much information can slow down the action process .Maybe all we need is a hypnotist. Because you can teach and coach somebody only to a certain extent . The players must have the natural ability to perform but most importantly they must have the burning desire to block and tackle .
I also notice the away games , they look a step slower than the home games .They got to hit the ground running with reckless abandon .
And for godsake, LEAVE THE COACHES ALONE .

Stephen, and the 4 starters who did not start off on scholarship are: Bryant Moniz, Royce Pollard, Richard Torres, and Corey Paredes. Obviously, some of the scholarship players didn’t turn out to be good players or the Fabulous Four walk-ons improved by leaps and bounds. I.E. Corey Nielson was a scholarship player. In his 3 seasons, 1 a redshirt season he was always at the bottom of the depth chart. We can all agree he was a mistake. But I really like Nielson. He’s a good guy and I wish him the best.
Perhaps NMSU can afford to have one player not graduate?
I can understand the frustration and exasperation of some UH fans.

I remember all of those years where it sometimes would go up to the week of the opener to determine a player’s eligibility.
Now, at least, UH knows early if a player will be eligible to play.

The BOR, President, Chancellor or any other high mucka mucka does not go out to recruit students; they sit back and take whatever comes their way.
Coaching is totally different – one must bust da behind to find, follow, evaluate and reach out to student athletes to secure a signed LOI.
The only similarity between the two is “teaching” – one by the books/lectures, etc. Other on the field/studying films, etc. What is in the book does not change; regardless of course or field of study. An athlete must do this PLUS learn/train for his/her sport.
To equate waiting to determine an athlectic coach contract is NOT the same as negotiating with the union on salary and benefits for professors. How much does it hurt” UH to prolong settling a union contract or selecting a Dean or hiring a professor? Unhappiness by profs?
Uneasiness by an applicant?
How much does it hurt UH to prolong a decision to negotiate a coach’s contract? A lot! It can affect recruiting and securing commitments from student athletes targeted by a coach and his/her staff and possibly losing recruits for the 2012 class!
Many donate money to UH academics and it’s use is determined by the college Dean. Some are more open than others. UH Foundation claims violation of “privacy laws” if UH discloses how the donated money was spent. Really? I can see not publically listing the name and contibution by donors; this may be a “privacy law” violation.
Therefore, I beseech those “holding up” completing Coach Mackin’s contract not to delay the process any longer. Make the final decision to extend or terminate his contract him.
Seems to be alot of stress regarding Mack’s contract.

At first glance during the extra point and fg attempt it appeared the linemen on the left side were slow to react to the snap. After stopping the video of both our special teams formation and SJSU’s formation it is clear where the problem lies. The spacing between linemen on the left side is wider than the spacing on the right side. This allows for an aggressive defense lineman to wiggle through between the gaps. Our formation has the same number of players on each side of the center. If you check out SJSU’s formation the gap between the o-line is tight and even on both sides of the center. I am going to have to place the responsibility for this on all of the coaches not just Tomey. Someone should have raised their hand and pointed this out before the season started.

PAT block came in the B gap between the left tackle and the left guard.
The FG block came in the A gap between the left guard and snapper. On that one, Ingram blocked a defender head on, and then Johnson stormed the gap. Good tactic by San Jose State.

Yeah, 5-1 would have been good. But, when you look at it, UH could have won the UW game too. Falling behind 21-0 in the first quarter is a tough task, but we were there in the 4th quarter with a chance to win. We could have been 6-0 if things fell our way. That’s why I get fired up when the team is not playing consistently and the execution is not there, especially at crunch. To me, it’s all about coaching. It’s about the “state of mind” the proper “focus”, the intensity for 4 quarters. The Niners committed 15 penalties today. That’s a lot. I wonder if it’s an NFL record for most penalties in a game? But the Niners won inspite of that because of the coaching, the focus, the intensity for 4 quarters and they won it very late in the 4th quarters. Good teams find a way to win anyway they can get it. Winning ugly sounds so good. As Vince Lombardi said “Winning is everything.” The recent Oakland Raiders and 49ers were a sorry lot. Now, with one change at Head Coach,, Hue Jackson and Jim Harbaugh is turning them around and playing inspired football. Players have to “Believe” that we are going to win, no matter what happens in the game. Every play is an important play. At UH there is obviously something wrong here and things have to change. The blocked kicks as I see it mostly because of the blocking up front. The defense is coming up the middle and penetration the front wall and getting a push through the seams or pushing the offensive linemen backwarks. Last year, we did not have any of those problems. We finished 10-3 and I thought we played very solidly. I agree, the team has good players but we are not in sync on all parts of the game, offense, defense, and special teams. The coaches have to take the brunt of the responsibility. The buck stops there.

• JJ said he wouldn’t negotiate during the season. He gave HF basically a six-month window to negotiate a new contract.
• HF didn’t make an offer.
• End of 2007 season, SMU calls JJ’s agent.
• After Sugar Bowl, JJ confirms he received $2-million-a-year offer from SMU.
• HF counters with $1.1-million a year offer. JJ says no.
• McClaine takes over negotiations.
• McClaine makes offers of $1.3 million, $1.5 million and, finally, $1.7 million.
• In rejecting the offers, JJ believes things won’t change if he stays. JJ reaffirms commitment to SMU.
• McClaine makes Hinshaw release HF without cause, meaning it’s a no-fault divorce and HF is paid off the remainder of his contract.
• UH is less than a month away from signing day.
• McClain and Hinshaw accelerate the interview/hiring process, claiming that it will hurt recruiting if the process goes by its usual speed.
• McMackin, the defensive coordinator, emerges as the leading candidate.
• With McClaine’s blessing, Hinshaw offers McMackin the first counter offer ($1.1 million) made to JJ.
• McMackin offers jobs to each of the assistants on JJ’s UH staff. Dan Morrison, whose daughter and grandchild live in Dallas, opts to go with JJ. Reinebold and Suan also decide to go with JJ. McKnight is on the fence, going back and forth, before deciding to go with JJ.
• Mack hits the ground running and pieces together a fairly decent recruiting class. It wasn’t easy because Bess and Grice-Mullins decided to apply for early admission into the NFL draft, and Colt’s successor, Tyler Grraunke, was experiencing personal problems that required UH to recruit two quarterbacks — Greg Alexander and Brent Rausch.
• First year, Mack had to rebuild the offense.
ª Second year, he had to rebuild the defense.
• Third year, they win share of WAC title.
And here we are today.
Thing is, none of that is possible without the backing of the Board of Regents and the supporters (see: Hawaii banks).
Which is why it is strange everyone now is saying: “Don’t remember what happened.”

#220 Moonsurfer. I cannot agree with you about leaving the coaches alone. It’s part of the game when you become head coach. And criticism will fly when the team starts losing. I don’t always agree with the call for a head coach’s head, like when Bob Wagner got the ax. But I couldn’t have been happier when Von Appen got the ax. As for Mac, it’s too early to call for his head. He has logged good wins including the W at Ruston. The loss to Tulsa in last year’s Hawaii Bowl was hard to swallow. And losses like the one to SJSU in the waning minutes of the game only brings out more frustration. That’s a game Hawaii should have won. Our defense played good enough for a W with six turnovers in the second half. The offense played good enough for a W. Sorry, but the coaching staff failed in the end by not going for a first down with a half yard to go on 4th. Tell me the offense with Iosefa could not have gotten the first down. It was a terrible call by the coaching staff to try a kick, especially when we all know this has been a weakness all year long.
Derek, definely under achieving to this point. Mack is not a micro manager which is good and bad. It seems it’s the little things or the over looked things that is tripping the team up.
In as much as my warriors drive me crazy sometimes, I gotta admit that our program is in a much better place now than it was years back.

What an unfortunate situation. Unnecessary losses piling up in the record books. And for no good reason. No reason other than a head coach in over his head. A head coach who will do anything but the right thing to “avoid confrontation or controversy!” The people of Hawaii deserves better. They deserve better than a leader who is willing to go down with the ship (the sinking of the Titantic) rather than admit he might be wrong. A leader who is really only good at smooshing and politics, but not much else when it comes to winning football games. On a positive note he has surrounded himself with good coaches, ones who are better equipment to lead the team. But when it comes down to those crucual moments when decisions need to be made in a split second, assistant coaches, DO NOT defer to Coach Mac. That is not his strength. Our team has lost too many games that we should not have lost. The last two bowl games, UNLV and now San Jose come to mind as blatant examples of such. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD HIS CONTRACT BE RENEWED!
Just one more thing on the PAT and FG units. The wider gaps on the left side means the o-line men have their feet spread apart farther than their shoulders. You lose lateral movement and explosiveness when your feet are farther apart than your shoulders. This loss of lateral movement hinders the left side of the line to plug the gaps.
Not a strategist, but it seemed like the odds were in UH’s favor at the end.
SJSU had to 90 yards in 1:26 without any timeouts after having turned the ball over six times and being stopped once on the previous seven possessions.
Well, I guess the odds are 1 in 8.

just finish watching the Packers and Rams game. Salas was wide open in the end zone all alone after his defender fell and Bradford did not see it. Salas in the slot seems to be open a lot. The first play for the Rams offense was a pass to Greg for about 10 yards but the Rams got a holding penalty on that one. If the Rams can learn to finish their drives they could end up being a pretty good offense.

Change “seems to have” to “has”. You have to know the history and work culture within the UH system to understand why it is the way it is. Part of it is the heavy reliance on hiring student help on the administrative side of things. Plenty of these student help eventually became FTE’s while never really having worthwhile work experience outside. Now add that to the mindset prevalent in Hawaii state and city government and what you get is this inability to think outside the box. Because of politics, it is ingrained to not make waves which means the status quo is perpetuated. To make matters worse and compared to other academic institutions of UH’s size, lot of these civil service and APT employees could care less about UH athletics. They are there to collect a paycheck more than anything else.
The academic side has their own set of problems that isn’t unique to UH…. basically, the ivory tower syndrome where the PhD types in certain disciplines (the ones usually outside of public health, engineering, science, and business) also have almost zero exposure to the real world with regards to how their research is applicable outside of academia. The problem at UH Manoa is compounded by the fact that they cannot compete with some of the more prestigious universities when it comes to pay especially when adjusted for cost of living (no surprise there). That isn’t to say there are some great people making do with what they have…. like that professor emeritus Ryuzo Yanagimachi who initially did all his cloning research in a really old and tiny lab housed in an equally decrepit warehouse (which was also where UH’s food sciences department was located) with some really old equipment before his grant money from his discoveries allowed him to build that new state of the art lab. But then again, some highly regarded research departments at Todai (Tokyo University) are in equally decrepit conditions which speaks to the resourcefulness of individuals when funding is tight. Off setting that however is that you have a lot more tenured academic staff who are literally in their own world….. and yes, some of those are the ones who show up in the lecture hall wearing shorts and t-shirt and look like they just crawled out of the makeshift bed some of them have in their offices. Not much professionalism by some of these profs at Manoa…
So what does the above have to do with UH athletics/football? A lot when it comes to general apathy and support. Often times, that shows up in the decision making process regarding priorities. Yeah, I know eggheads at other institutions also have their gripes about athletics but most of them temper those complaints when the revenues generated from football/basketball end up also financing a whole lot outside the athletic department. With UH though, it is a systemic problem compounded by the fact that this is the only NCAA Division I program located out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean where the cost of living is through the roof with an economy heavily reliant on the service sector which means, people have to choose their priorities a lot more carefully. With PPV and theater viewing options, the choice for some becomes reducing the hassles (of not having to deal with traffic or the nazi’s at No Aloha) to forgoing the whole thing altogether.
As for McMackin… don’t really care if his contract is extended or not…. That right there is general apathy rearing its ugly head and it is none of my concern since I’m no longer a season ticket holder…. gave it up after the 2009 season ending a streak starting at the termite palace… and haven’t been to a game since. Furthermore, I rarely watched any of the games since then either so after the 2010 season when I saw their record, I thought it was because of me not going to games or watching them. LOL. Haven’t missed it much since lot of other things ended up occupying the time. Which is one of the great things about living in Hawaii as there are plenty of activities to do. This right here is what UH is up against when they start losing long time supporters via apathy and/or attrition as the more senior supporters pass on. If the younger generation can’t carry the torch, then the university is going to have to do a better job in making the product more attractive. How they do that is their problem. Unfortunately, Hawaii’s isolation and therefore insular ways of thinking prevents bold and innovative thinking and more so, concrete action.
Of course this weekend when I noticed they lost to SJSU, I had to sneak a peek at what kind of meltdown would be taking place in the Hawaii blogsphere because I remembered how annoyed I was after that 2008 loss. Which is why I’m back here posting this. Tsaiko land is pretty calm compared to the railing some of us were doing back in 2009. Not much one can say about WSN since complaining is the defacto standard. But when I saw that thread on SportsHawaii with the 4-letter F word (the one ending in E, not K), I know the natives are getting restless. I also wanted to see for myself how they loss and so I watched a replay on ESPN3. To be honest, it didn’t seem as bad as some are making it out to be if you just read postings. But that is what being unattached does to you… makes you far more objective to either side. UH gave it away in the first half, SJSU in the second. Special teams breakdown was the difference. In other words, I saw both teams moving the ball on offense. I saw great defense by both teams. But when both teams screwed up, they gave up opportunities to score points. Some of those were mental mistakes and some were basic fundamentals. Both are correctable and that is up to the coaches to address and fix. A good gauge of course is that as the season progress, a team should get better so long as there aren’t major injuries. If that isn’t happening, then something is being lost in translation.
don’t get me wrong, i support all of the student athletes that wear the UH uniform, but college athletics is big business, bottom line. coaching and administration is such the integral part of their success, and everyone knows that, so let’s be solution oriented…… we all know what the problem and the concerns are.
if we want Mack out, we gotta pay the piper, bottom line, or keep dancing to his tunes…..

For all you fans complaining about the spot that brought up 4th and 1 on our 44, and the subsequent non-challenge by Coach Mac, let me ask this…
If you guys are so enamored with the rest of our coaches, (with all of their combined years and experience as coaches), but just not Coach Mac, why is it that none of the rest of our coaches were screaming for a challenge of the spot as well? Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, we lose sight of things. Why is it that none of the rest of our coaches were screaming to go for it instead?
As previously mentioned, our defense WAS on fire the whole second half, up until that point. We kicked the ball away and got a spot on their 12 or so. We died when we stopped being aggressive and went to a PREVENT defense, giving up everything underneath. One missed tackle here and there, and bingo, they scored. Our mistake. Lesson learned.
Yes, the 2 pts we gave up on that blocked PAT did us in, but we still had the lead until we went PREVENT.
In his first three years, Coach Mac has a 23-18 W-L record. Coach Jones had a 21-16 record… that is on top of the magical NCAA-record-turnaround year. At least Coach Mac hasn’t lost to any D-IAA teams, like Coach Jones did. And he’s improved the football team’s overall APR.
I believe we can win the rest of our WAC games. We need to come out on fire and in synch every game. We need to play with, and keep, the intensity from start to finish. No worry about the last play, just keep going forward with purpose. Forget those *fans* yelling stupid stuff to our own team. Block them bandwagoners out. Our defense showed how Warriors handle business (aside from getting burned on that last drive). Our whole team, to include coaches, need to show the same fire and determination, play after play. Forget about sulking in the corner. Pick yourselves up and move on. Stay aggressive on offense and defense. Big plays are big momentum boosts… but so are long, sustained dink-here dink-there move-the-chains to score TD’s drives too. It frustrates the other team to no end when they realize they can’t stop us. Protect the ball so we don’t stop ourselves.
Okay, now get out there and take care of business. Need to get these fair-weather fans back into the stands! They want us to be like big time programs, but they won’t show up unless and until we start winning. And, we know how to win, we just gotta be more consistent. These first six games should have taught us a lifetime of lessons. From this point on, we take these learned lessons and move forward.
Remember this sick feeling of letting a close one get away… and vow to never repeat it again!

JJ vs Mack – The records are similar, but the most important thing is that the players would go to battle for JJ. Sad to say but I am not sure you could say that now about Mack. It’s all about respect. As I mentioned in #213, Mack doesn’t have “it”.

From the little I’ve heard in interviews, I’ve never heard disparaging remarks coming from any former players regarding Coach Mac and “respect”. Even when new recruits are interviewed, they always have positive remarks of Coach, the program, and the school.
Since I’m away, my only eyes are those times when the camera zooms in on Coach and his staff. True, he is never shown being animated and throwing things around, like some of his mainland counterparts. We have heard how heated things may get once in a while in the locker room, and we do see him arguing with a ref on once in a while.
Our defense does step up to play when the fire is lit. Perhaps they are taking on Coach Aranda’s personality, as well as those of some of the defensive leaders, like Brown, Paredes, and Torres. The offense tends to take on Coach Rolo’s calmness, and Moniz is also a calmer type player. If both Coach Rolo and Moniz don’t outwardly project a sense of urgency, our offense seems to take on that characteristic too. Colt would always be seen rallying his troops. Greg Salas was also a leader, and did what he could on the sidelines and on the field. I’d never see Coach Jones doing that. It was always one of the players. We don’t see that in sideline shots when we’re struggling now. Just saying…

Meanwhile, as ‘corny’ as it seems, I still support the program and the team. That’s all we have the power to control, since we are not an integral part of hiring or firing coaches.
These young men are trying their level best to win. Their parents read this blog as well. To come on this blog with all your negativity certainly doesn’t make either of them feel like they made the right choice in coming to UH.

That’s a pretty good characterization of the coaches/players. Also goes to show you that this is not a perfect world. We can celebrate the difference when they put it all together and fine tune the Green Machine for positive results.
True, Coach Mac is ultimately responsible for what happens, but we’ve also got elected and emotional leaders who need to step up and do their part. If sulking in a corner, what kind of message are we conveying to the rest of the unit and team? We need some to go around hitting pads and firing up our boyz to get back out there and take care of business. If we suffer a turnover, our boys should be fired up to just smash the other team the next time they go in. Our defense does their part by getting us the ball back, but then we don’t capitalize on it. We’re throwing bombs instead of getting into a rhythm. Then we’re forced to kick it away again. We need to be consistent not only in winning, but in moving those chains.
So far, we’re 31-75 in converting 3rd downs, while our opponents are 44-89.

haha! Good stuff, Kekoa! As tough as it’s been for us, you just know it’s been even more frustrating for our boyz. They really don’t need the added drama in the stands (or Upper Campus, for that matter).
So, yeah, I’m here as always, cheering them on and hoping they can finally put it all together. Take care of the ball, and we won’t have to go through those disappointing moments. I do have faith that things will be fixed and we will have a winning season. I am not expert enough to be a coach. But, I know how to be a lifelong fan, no matter what.

Although Coach Mac may seem like a soft-spoken individual, I remember the Colorado game where he took two consecutive timeouts. Yelling, face red and eyes bulging. I thought he was going to strangle someone or perhaps have an aneurysm. I think Mac has a hidden mean streak in him. Piss him off and your gonna get a mouthful!

The SJS game was a bad loss simply because we should’ve/could’ve won. When SJS got the ball back with 2 minutes left and a great punt by Dunnachie, there was some degree of confidence because defense was suppose to be the strength. However, UH had a hard time getting to the QB and on that 37 yd TD, they showed blitz and still couldn’t get to the QB. So, instead of bending and not breaking, it broke. Wrong call?
The main reason for the loss is special teams. We aren’t a team worthy of being champions if we can’t kick PATs and FGs. Coaches always say they know what is wrong and will fix it. Doesn’t seem like it. In fact, it got worse. What seems to be a routine matter for most team has become an obvious struggle for UH. And aren’t other teams going to be chomping at the bit knowing how easy it is to block UH’s kicking game? Not to mention two run backs of blocked PATs. How often has that happened in UH history?
