Thursday in the Bay

SANTA CLARA — It’s the day before the game on the road, which means NFL scouts are set to meet with the UH coaches to evaluate players.

There are about a dozen scouts in the hotel where the Warrior are staying. The buzz is that quarterback Bryant Moniz is drawing a lot of interest.

Also, it was confirmed that David Lefotu will start at right guard tomorrow. It will be his first career start.

The Warriors had a 45-minute walk-through at Spartan Stadium today.

Here are left guard Brett Leonard and center London Sapolu:

We had a little rain – two inches on Tuesday. Not enough for Arlington to lift water restrictions. And a little bit on Wednesday. Clear skies today, with no rain expectations.

I recall the spring game at aloha stadium 3 years ago. Moniz was about the fifth QB in the game, right after Steele Jantz, if I recall correctly. I recall thinking that this fifth stringer was the best QB on the team.

And, since we’re on the subject of annual events in the area, we used to march in the daily parade during the week long California Salinas Rodeo (pronounced ro-DAY-oh by the locals who used to always correct us).

Then, there’s the Monterey Jazz Festival, races at Laguna Seca Raceway, marching down, and then back up the hill in Carmel-by-the-Sea around Halloween. (The parade used to end near Clint Eastwood’s Hog’s Breath Inn restaurant… I think it was their city’s birthday celebration or something). The list goes on and on. Now that I think about it, I really miss the area.

  74. rich2176 October 13, 2011 9:45 am

Wes’side Warrior – my dad got transferred to Ft. Ord in 1980 and retired in 1985. He’s been working at Bayonet/Blackhorse for about 15 years. (You wouldn’t recognize it since the Army doesn’t run it anymore.) Folks still live in Salinas and it’s always a treat to go visit from L.A. I’m disappointed I can’t go to the game this weekend, but there was no logistical way to get from San Jose to my golf tournament in Ventura Saturday morning unless I left @ 5 a.m., and that wasn’t going to happen after celebrating a nationally televised WARRIOR victory.

    Kuulei Can Play

Junior college transfer Kuulei Kabalis has earned the starting libero spot for the Wildcats and is averaging 3.59 digs per set so far this season. The native Hawaiian tallied 20 digs in the win over Creighton for her first 20-dig match as a Wildcat and had a new career-high of 23 at Missouri. Kabalis showed she can produce in a win over South Dakota State as she tallied 16 digs in the 3-0 win. Kabalis has tallied 15 or more digs six times this season. She also has proven to be one of the team’s top servers to keep teams off balance. Kabalis is third on the team in aces and had three in the win over Hofstra. Kabalis also is the first player in the program’s history from Hawai’i.

  87. kawika49 October 13, 2011 10:54 am

    UH Fan 808 & J/J:

The Nevada away game has been moved to 7 pm there/5 pm here (standard/winter time). You might want to let the management at Café Bronco know.

Actually, the Wahine volleyball team will be playing New Mexico State that night – it’s senior night starting at 7 pm. Hopefully, the football game will be on a channel that is accessible for those of us who do not have digital service from Oceanic.

We’re going to record the last half of tomorrow’s game and watch the first half at a bar close to the Regal Theatreshich is hosting the Hawai`i International Film Festival. Over the next ten days, we’ll be going to 26!!! flix and one forum.

I do have some potentially significant updates concerning Aloha Stadium, but the person I need to check with is on vacation this week and I’ll be on vacation next week so the following week is the earliest I’ll be able to find out wassup.

The NCAA is looking at cutting 5 football scholarships (3 football scholarships in D-IAA), 1 men’s basketball scholarship, 2 women’s basketball scholarship, and increasing the value of all scholarships to the full cost of attendance.

Following a six-hour meeting in late September, the Resource Allocation Working Group, chaired by Georgia President Michael Adams, agreed to consider a reduction in FBS football scholarships from the current number of 85 to 80 and a reduction in the number of FCS football scholarships from 63 to 60. The reductions would likely follow a move toward a full cost-of-attendance scholarship that is expected to be passed in early 2012. In addition to football, the group agreed to consider a reduction in the number of men’s basketball scholarships from 13 to 12 and in women’s basketball from 15 to 13.

Don’t know where you guys went for that burger and fries, but if you’re able to find a Fuddrucker’s out there in San Jose, man, that’s some serious burgers!

Rich… small world! I was stationed there from 82-83, and then again from 84-86! Got relatives in Marina and Seaside, as well as friends and old Army buddies scattered throughout the area.

Can’t wait for tomorrow’s game! Even with the scouts on hand, please play within yourselves. Sometimes, with the added pressure, we try to do too much. They are there to see what we do within our system. Show them how things run when everyone’s clicking on the same page!

    Go, Warriors!!!

  100. madeinhawaii October 13, 2011 12:15 pm

I wonder if cutting 5 scholarships will bring greater parity to D1 football?

It would mean 600 less scholarships to go around, however, and I feel badly for those athletes that would have otherwise gotten a full ride.

  101. rich2176 October 13, 2011 12:23 pm

#101 – You probably know or heard of my dad. He was one of the CSM’s there. When he retired in 1985, they took over an entire parade field for him. My mom was a volunteer at the Thrift Shop…LOL.

    London at center, check.

    Lefotu at guard, check.

I would like to see the coaches move Lloyd to guard. Having Lefotu and Lloyd for the next three years would make the inside of the line very solid. It doesn’t matter who the plug in at center. Nobody plays noseguard anymore.

I know I mentioned that the Big LEast could conceivably ask for 3-4 years commitment by all members and that wouldn’t be asking too much. Some message board chirping about the Basketball faction of the Big LEast want a 15 year commitment by the Football faction before they start to bring in a school like Temple for all sports.

Its only unsubstantiated rumors off course but wouldn’t that be something. lol

    ST:

Looks like a mixed-bag of seats at Spartan Stadium – some blue theater style, some bench seats (concrete and aluminum)?

Who gets dem blue seats? big donors?

No can beat Aloha Stadium seats – now only if they would get rid of some “security” issues and make it easier for the seniors who have difficulty moving about! Udub and Sam Boyd stadium you can bring in filled water bottles – why not in Hawaii? Is the “plantation” mentality still bugging us? If so, let it go already.

  146. Old School Dave October 13, 2011 7:19 pm

Watched the ESPN program “Depth Chart” – Oklahoma State Football and their quarterbacks. Good behind the scenes look at the day to day preparation from fall camp to the season opener. Ultimately, ($$$) OSU backer T. Boone Pickens name came up and he was interviewed. I remember the days when OSU was just an afterthought and punching bag to OU. With T. Boone’s contributions to the program (sparkling facilities), they’re now on the verge of becoming a regular in the national rankings and a premiere football program.

Perhaps it’s wishful thinking, but I wonder if (or when) UH will have its own T. Boone Pickens come forward and make considerable monetary contributions to the UH football program in order for them to move to the “next level”, so to speak. Based on Oklahoma State’s example, there’s a direct correlation between money, financial donors and the product that’s put on the field.

  147. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 13, 2011 7:41 pm

    Old School Dave,

First we have to identify UH billionaire alumni which to this date probably do not exist.

I think the closest would be Richard Parsons who is the current Chairman of Citigroup. His net worth is a “pathetic” $100,000,000. LOL!

  148. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 13, 2011 7:45 pm

While it is important to have a solid athletics program, it is 1000X more important that we have a solid academic institution in place to attract brilliant minds.

Its no coincidence that schools like Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Yale etc. rank at the top of “most billionaire” alumni.

Many bloggers here stress the “student” aspect of student athlete, so we must remember UH’s academics is of greatest importance.

i thought that the coach said it would be “pedal to the metal” from here on out a few weeks ago after returning from las vegas.

…and yet, we take two days off in a row and literally “walk” thru.

doesn’t anyone realize that this is not going to be an easy game?

this could be the second trap game this year, remember how we fell in to the pit in vegas?

    manoa malarkey…the coaches contracts.

    how to right an overpayment?

    a. seek a 50% reduction in pay

    b. don’t offer an extension

    c. table discussions much later until it is too late.

    c. all of the above.

how to right missing the execution of a time sensitive contract deadline (well over one year)?

    a. offer a 45% pay increase

    b. offer a lengthier term than first agreed upon

    c. include five punahou tuitions

    d. all of the above.

how to hide the fact that a coach is in her last year of her initial contract?

    a. never host a press conference with that coach’s program.

    b. tell the coach that this is her last year but we’re giving you time to find a new job by next year as long as you keep it quiet.

    c. refuse to attend any games

    d. all of the above

People can say that the economy is in dire straits so the coach should take a cut.. but the football program is making money.. or WAS… don’t know how it will be under the MWC umbrella. But maybe it’s time to ask the boosters what they are willing to contribute again.

If the Bows win the WAC and go to the Big Dance and win a game… will they get to keep any of the money? or do they forfeit it all to the WAC?

    madeinhawaii,

UH leaves behind *all* NCAA tournament credits it earns when they leave the WAC. Each NCAA tournament game played is worth $1.44 mil to its conference…so, if UH would make it to the national title game that would be 6x$1.44 = $8.64 mil that the WAC would get. The winner of the national tournament game makes the same as the loser–schools earn more for their conference for each game they play.

Schools that earn NCAA tournament money don’t actually get to keep any of it directly–they earn the money for the conference and then get an equal share with everybody else when the conference splits the money. The Big 12 used to give something like 10% of the NCAA money earned to the school that earned it…but that is part of the “unequal” revenue sharing that they are being criticized for.

People can say that the economy is in dire straits so the coach should take a cut.. but the football program is making money.. or WAS

Almost *every* D-IAA school makes money from football. However, football needs to make enough profit to cover almost all of the nonrevenue sports that a school offers, especially all of the sports that are added due to Title IX to compensate for the 85 scholarships that football has.

If UH just made $1 mil from football, they would have to shut the football program down or cover a HUGE shortfall due to all of the nonrevenue sports. UH cannot even go to D-IAA because the travel would prevent any D-IAA conference from adding UH and UH couldn’t be indy in D-IAA.

  187. Garret October 14, 2011 2:55 am

    Al,

Very, very good points for your post on contracts.

Trying to correct the overpayment this way just seems shortsighted to me. Upper Campus gave a bad contract and now are making things far worse to try to get money back.

That time sensitive failure by Upper Campus will cost UHAD in so many ways, really killing the bottom line.

Letting a contract expire in that manner is bad, but not nearly as bad as the first 2 mess ups you listed.

  188. Garret October 14, 2011 3:05 am

Normally schools that enter a conference do not get a full share of NCAA tournament revenue right away–they only share in the NCAA tournament revenue earned after they are a member of the conference. If the Big West follows in that standard practice, then UH won’t get a full share of their NCAA tournament revenue until 2018 (tournament credits are earned for 6 years).

The Big West has been getting about $1 mil less than the WAC in NCAA basketball money, so even if UH got a full share they would be getting much less than before. Nobody seems to have mentioned that drop in revenue for UHAD, but I’m sure that JD has seem how that will impact the bottom line.

2011 distribution of NCAA basketball money (averaged per team):

    Big 12: $1.89 mil

    Big East: $1.56 mil

    MWC: $625k

    WAC: $350k

    Big West: $211k

Note that the Big West will have to divide their NCAA basketball money by 10 instead of by 9 after UH joins, so if they give a full share to UH each school would get $190k.

The dugouts creation at that stadium is a nifty idea. The front row seating is already elevated from field level, which was smart. But football players don’t eat sunflower seeds during games,so the dugout grounds should stay semi-cleaner. :>

  224. learn magic tricks October 16, 2011 7:32 pm

I am not paying $14 to discover how this magic trick is accomplished. There was a man that showed up to a class of us students at an frozen treats shop a week ago and ask if anyone had a dime. My friend gave the person a dime and he brought out a sharpie marker and said to put her initials on the back and front of the coin. Then he brought out a clear balloon out of his pocket and blew it up. The guy took my pals signed dime and stuck it within the balloon through the walls. We’re able to see the dime and hear the dime within the balloon. Amazing. How on the planet can one do that? After the magic trick was done he handed my pal the balloon and said to enable the air out of it and to rip it open to see if it absolutely was her signed dime. It was. I discovered a relevant video of the identical trick on youtube. Will someone please inform me the way they accomplish this because I don’t have fourteen dollars to my name. http://bit.ly/coin_balloon_magic_trick_video

I’d really love to be a part of online community where I can get advice from other experienced people that share the same interest. If you have any recommendations, please let me know. Kudos!
