Tuesday report

The Warriors had a creative practice today, working on the strategies they expect to use against San Jose State Friday, as well as unveiling some new wrinkles.

Also:

sjtu7

• Kawika Borden, who has recovered from hip and ankle injuries to emerge as a dynamic special-team player, has been added to the 64-player travel roster.

• Defensive end Tavita Woodard also will travel.

• Not sure if this is significant, but the players yelled, “automatic,” as Kenton Chun jogged onto the field for a placekicking drill. Chun and kicker Tyler Hadden will travel.

• Brett Leonard resumed practicing today after being held out for a week because of the after-effects of being struck on the head during the Louisiana Tech game. Leonard declared himself physically fit. It should be interesting with center Matagisila Lefiti getting more reps at right guard.

• Miah Ostrowsi was running at full speed today. After missing the previous three games, he is set to rotate with Justin Clapp at right slotback.

As an old fut, I’ve always embraced this lament: If I knew then what I know now . . .

Well, UH supporters should know this: This might be the good ol’ days for fans of UH football. Consider:

• Warrior games can be shown on ESPN.

• The coaching staff includes Mouse Davis and Dick Tomey.

• There is a conference opponent in Northern California.

• Bryant Moniz is the starting quarterback.

• Kaniela Tuipulotu and Vaughn Meatoga are starting defensive tackles.

• Aloha Stadium is still standing.

• The Warriors are in a conference.

Cool birthday wishes to Wes’side Warrior.

I still don’t understand the logic of joining the MWC since we have to pay for their charter flights and hardly get any money from the conference’s tv deal. We also may lose our PPV at 2 million + per year. I really think the MWC should renegociate their tv deal. The top teams are leaving the MWC. Must be a reason for that. How can we survive? We must be hoping for a larger tournout at the games, but with the “name” teams leaving, it may be like the WAC again. I did like the idea of getting out of the WAC but now I’m not so sure. Maybe we should have gone independent.

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

    Papajoe –

If UH stayed in the WAC, our conference opponents next season would be 87 Utah St, 99 San Jose St, 113 New Mexico St, 114 Idaho and 82* UT-San Antonio, 50* Texas St

    * – FCS power ranking (Div1AA). Note that UC Davis is currently 29

    MWC – 121 New Mexico, 111 UNLV, 97 Colorado St, 92 Wyoming, 81 Fresno St, 66 SDSU, 54 Air Force, 56 Nevada

I can’t see fans being excited to play those remaining WAC teams. If you also take into account the other sports moving to the Big West, this all makes “cents”.

  15. LizKauai (iPad) October 11, 2011 7:44 am

    Tsigh..

No Child Left Behind now taking control of UH?

The end of Football will just be the harbinger of the end of UH…

A university education becomes more and more meaningless in preparation for the practical world and fewer people will be able or even willing to sacrifice for it….

The old world order is rolling up.

But for the rest of THIS SEASON, I got my season tickets, got my (mofo) plane reservations, and am READY TO CHEER FOR OUR WARRIORS!!!

  30. Wes'side Warrior October 11, 2011 8:31 am

    Morning/afternoon, everyone!

We’ve seen the ups and downs throughout the years… talk way back when about the possibility of stepping down to a lower division… and we somehow pulled through.

This is not the time to bail out on our school and student athletes. I thought, after the debacle in the desert, that there was mention that Coach Mack’s contract was going to be done after seeing how the team performed at LaTech? Now, I’m hearing of a possibility that it may not happen until the end of the season? Are they really trying to reduce UH to an academics-only school? And how will that affect Hawaii’s overall economy? I’d rather they make a big push and work with everyone connected to the HTA to redevelop our tourist industry.

I am approached every day I go out, whether it’s grocery shopping, paying bills, getting gas, whatever. Everyone asks, “Are you from Hawaii?” because of the hats or shirts I wear. This always leads to some discussion about our football, softball, or volleyball teams. It is some sort of a novelty to these people, that we are so isolated and yet still manage to compete with their schools up here on the mainland, even with the crazy amount of traveling required. Conversation almost always drifts to something about wanting to visit Hawaii before they get too old.

Up in Michigan for the past 15 years, we’d always see vacation commercials for the Caribbean and Florida, especially during winter months. We’d never see anything on travel to Hawaii, unless we’re watching a nationally televised game.

Anyways, enough of my rambling. Just a bit of frustration seeping in with all this foot-dragging. I agree with what others have said, though. Make it known through media who are involved in these contract negotiations, and ask every one of them if they understand the impact they have by delaying this, as well as their position on the current struggle. As far as I can see, we’ve been steadily improving both on the field and in the classroom. Coach has taken voluntary cuts on top of that. Not his fault that they offered such a huge pie to begin with.

  31. tommui October 11, 2011 8:37 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

jm2375 #28 The concept of a “sound mind in a sound body” is primary reason why physical education was required at “schools of higher learning” and even filtering down to grade/intermediate/high schools.

If we are talking about athletic programs that feature team sports but not on a D1-D3 level, you have University of Chicago, MIT etc.

However, if you want to have community-wide support, you got to maintain and encourage a successful athletic program. Look at all the fair-weather types that jumped on the Colt Brennan/Sugar Bowl bandwagon!

  32. Shoko October 11, 2011 8:37 am

Big East is a sinking boat. Don’t know why BSU would even consider joining the conference in only football. I remember when the Big East only wanted TCU as a football-only member and they said screw that.

    http://www.idahostatesman.com/2011/10/11/1834996/boise-state-coach-has-an-open.html

  33. papajoe2 October 11, 2011 8:44 am

Someone needs to get these people together in one session to work out Coach Mack’s contract. In yesterday’s blog #198 by MIH, someone wrote to JD and his response was something like this: the athletic director, chancellor, president, vice chair of the board of regents and chairman of the board of regents must approve any contract longer than 3 years and paying $500,000 or more. No wonder its taking a long time to get it done. Too many people involved. Getting them together is just 1 of many steps. Coach Mack also has to agree on the contract and may have his wantings that all those at UH may not agree too. Must all of those people invloved agree to everything before its offered?

  34. A-joe October 11, 2011 8:47 am

I have a friend who’s son KILLS in flag football yet, refuses to step up and play Pop Warner. He hasn’t told me straight but, I can see his point; Why go up and play with the bigger boys and be mediocre, maybe get hurt. He’s having fun right now. Eventually he’ll be old enough to play high school ball. He’ll wait till then.

Jumping to the Big 12 or Big East is just too much of a leap for Boise right now. They don’t have the backend infrastructure to support such a sudden and drastic move.

The system BSU currently has in place works perfectly for the situation they’re in. But, it can’t hold up and withstand the weekly riggers of bigger stronger opponents.

Surely, Big 12 or Big East exposure could lead to better recruits. But now, BSU is competing against bigger programs for the same talent. What 4star blue Chip athlete would want to spend 4 years in the Ponderosa when they could be under the big city lights of Austin or NY.

And besides, BSU would look like dicks to abandon a conference they just got into. (Don’t wanna blatantly burn any bridges as they step on member’s faces on their climb to the top. Too soon for that)

BSU has gotten to this point through excellent strategic planning. They’ve systematically taken baby steps and invested into their future to propel them forward. Who knows in 10 years when BSU has a 50,000 seat stadium, a good flow of outside revenue streaming in and a sustained solid program, they may outgrow the MWC pen and seek greener pastures.

What’s weighing heavily on BSU’s mind is- can BSU survive beyond Peterson? What happens when he leaves? Do they find someone else to replicate what he’s instilled? Who would that be? Does the program go in another direction? Can they afford and sustain such a move? This and many other factors predicates their next move forward.

Much to contemplate. Till then, baby steps is working just fine for them.

Is it fair to expect more from a program that now has a bigger and better foundation than it eve

Just for arguments sake…What if the higher ups see a program that did more with less 1999-2007, but now see a program doing the same with MORE. Weird ah?

What does that say? What is really fair here?

Adjusted for inflation, it’s probably about the same now.

  41. madeinhawaii October 11, 2011 9:06 am

So is the MWC dead already?

  42. madeinhawaii October 11, 2011 9:08 am

Hawaii needs to get an additional week exemption for itself and the team it plays first for it to survive. That alone will increase it’s value to whatever conference it is in as the first game will be the ONLY game around and viewed by millions.

  43. Old Diver October 11, 2011 9:11 am

Why is UH leaving the WAC for the MWC? Well think of it this way. It is like jumping off the Titanic (WAC) into a life raft (MWC) in the middle of nowhere. While you could still die on the life raft, it won’t be immediate like staying on the Titanic.

Hawaii doesn’t have a goal and a clear strategic path to get there. Right now, Hawaii is in a “maintaining mode” at times teetering on “survival mode.”

JD needs to sit down with key legislatures, state and downtown business leaders, philanthropic supporters and pound out a clear goal and direction for the program. Assess the resources Hawaii has and use them favorably to the program’s advantage. Explore new avenues that can expand Hawaii’s reach.

With Air Force and TCU out of the picture, is there enough in the MWC to generate the kind of attendance we need to pay for these travel subsidies? The loss of the top tier teams (worse if Boise leaves) puts these subsidies in a totally different light.

  61. bigislandkurt October 11, 2011 11:11 am

    Aloha A-Joe!

I respectfully disagree. And this don’t happen too often my friend.

All Boise has done is systematically destroy virtually each and every opponent put in front of them….no matter what conference. Sure, there was last year’s Nevada game….but aside from that, Boise has constantly beaten everyone they have played. Oregon. VaTech. Georgia. Oklahoma.

Pundits say….”yeh, but can they do that every week”? I tell you this. Boise has been a Juggernaut. And they have constantly made successful leaps each and every step of the way –from their days a junior college to the national powerhouse brand they have today. There is a history that goes back much farther than Hawkins, Coach Pete and anyone else us UH folks may know about concerning recent Boise history. Coach Pete gonna be one of those throw backs…..one of those that stay at the same school for many years. He loves his situation in Boise….almost God/joepa like. But if he just so happens to decide to retire and become the Governor of Idaho, I have to believe that they will keep that engine/system humm’n like a bee.

Based on their history, I have no doubt in my mind that they will succeed in the Big East or Big 12. Remember, we talking about a Big12 that will be missing A&M, and possibly Missou, Texas and Oklahoma. Everybody is just trying to be premptive in preparation for the dominoes to fall…again. And when they do, the whole baby step theory goes out the window. It’s all about the benjamins baby. $$$.

    BIK

  62. madeinhawaii October 11, 2011 11:17 am

Softball had their first practice yesterday as Jason Kaneshiro reports in the paper today.

It’s true, there is a new level of enthusiasm this year. Clean slate indeed and people will come to enjoy the new and talented incoming freshmen.

Returnees look solid and confident, but not relaxed or content either.

Good level of energy yesterday and everyone lookin strong and physically conditioned for the season.

  65. Couch potato October 11, 2011 11:31 am

Great to read about ESPNU carrying the UNR game. Did a quick check on the weather history for November 12th in Reno:

    Lows between 5 (1903) and 46 (1984) degrees.

    Highs between 27 (1985) and 73 (1990) degrees.

Not too late to get those L.L. Bean orders in…

  69. A-joe October 11, 2011 11:55 am

It’s all good, braddah BIK. We just trying to keep it real.

This is where I say don’t only look at what’s being done on the field. Look at what’s being done off.

Boise historical success didn’t come with overnight split decisions. Their predicated success has been due to a slow systematic growth off the field. Case and point- In 1968 Boise didn’t begin to build a 70,000 seat stadium in hopes of someday filling it. They were realistic. They built one that sustained their immediate needs. As they’ve grown over the years they’ve added to stadium.

What’s admirable about Boise is rather than maintaining a status quo, they’ve consciously invested into their future, year after year, to further their program.

Baby steps have been good to them.

I have no doubt Boise can play with the big boys. What they can’t do is maintain their success with a tough schedule week in and week out. And why should they. They’ve got a clear road to a national title with a schedule they can dominate.

Benjamins or not, Boise just doesn’t have the infrastructure in place to support such a sudden drastic move to a bigger conference. Someday, they will. Just not yet.

Rome wasn’t built overnight. Certainly not Boise as well.

  70. A-joe October 11, 2011 11:56 am

btw- did I mention, Boise not moving.

  71. A-joe October 11, 2011 12:04 pm

Why is Texas, USC, Oklahoma, LSU, Florida, Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Alabama sooo successful year in and year out?

They can buy their success without BCS money.

    Boise can’t.

    Someday, they will.

Mahalo for letting us know, A-Joe… as well as the Boise reminder… 🙂

Because this is a blog, some people like to voice conjecture about conference realignments, coaches future, etc. Keeping it simple, I’m into supporting the team, right here, right now. The players on the team are focusing on their next game, one game at a time. (That’s what they tell me…) This season’s goal… WAC Champs! I doubt that they are tossing and turning in their sleep about conference realignments. I’m not going to waste my energy on worrying about that right now. Just support the team & coaches. Focus your positive energy to the team. I don’t purport to know much about football, but I do know some of the people who are playing & coaching the game. They appreciate your support.

Who knows by the time Hawaii gets into MWC next year 2012; we’ll have all the Oldie WAC opponents left to play with.

  81. rainbowfan October 11, 2011 12:42 pm

Hawaii softball wahine had 158 home runs in 2010 and only 56 in 2011, Majam had 30 in 2010 and 9 in 2011; Iwata had 18 in 2010 and 15 in 2011.

The type of bats allowed made a big difference, so Bob should go back to some small ball, if he hasn’t already.

  82. mikey October 11, 2011 12:45 pm

Boise State is already doing it without BCS Money.

    Have you seen Money Ball?

BSU gets Bargain players (Underrated player) playing like they belong in BCS Schools.

And so does TCU and SMU is coming along nicely too.

They just signed 4Star Running Back for next year already.

Hawaii never had that but we’re hoping one day!

  83. mikey October 11, 2011 12:47 pm

  86. A-joe October 11, 2011 1:16 pm

Mikey- Yup. Seen it. Boise ain’t money ball.

I’m not talking “chump change” out of pocket purchases here. I’m talking buying yourself a new system without blinking an eye. And survive as a program without sweating it.

-Notre Dame is on their 6th buyout since Holtz left.

-Michigan did it twice after Lloyd Carr.

-LSU didn’t blink after Nick Saban left.

-Alabama tried six times after Gene Stallings retired.

-Ohio St. recent purchase is purely damage control until they can find someone to right their ship.

Boise just can’t afford to do it. We certainly can’t. If we could Mack and Trap would’ve been long gone by now.

Can Boise stave off USC, Ohio St. or Notre Dame from plucking away Peterson? Do they have a back up plan if Peterson leaves?

  87. Couch potato October 11, 2011 1:25 pm

A-joe, that’s truckloads of change those schools spent! never thought of those “purchases”.

if Petersen gets lured and takes his staff then, aiyah. deconstruct the stadium.

    Couch Potato,

Sorry kind of swamped right now. Months ago, Ralph provided links to stats for 1st base/catcher Kayla Wartner and I provided some info on 3rd base player Austin Wilkerson.

You can find a detailed stat listing for Wartner via MaxPreps I believe.

You can find youtube videos on both. Wilkerson’s video is the most recent and Wartner’s one dates from 2009.

The walk-ons Keiko Sugihara and Stacy Rosengren also have youtube videos.

  92. Hawaiianbod October 11, 2011 2:05 pm

    Happy Birthday Westside Warrior!

  93. Ralph October 11, 2011 2:09 pm

AHouse commitments are verbals to date: for 2012 Boise State, TCU and SMU have 16 verbals, UH 1.

Boise and TCU are where we want to be as non AQ schools, successful in conference and good enough to compete in BCS bowls. JJ at SMU wants to emulate the success and footsteps of TCU, and he is on his way in achieving success. As A Joe stated, do we have a plan?

  94. whitey October 11, 2011 2:15 pm

  95. whitey October 11, 2011 2:18 pm

Okay Whitey, I just took a peek at Rivals.com, maybe different on Scout.com

  97. WarriorMojo October 11, 2011 2:20 pm

    Re #9

I was going to let this pass, but it’s been bugging me. What do you mean by the phrase “guys like Chun and Bubba Luna”? Unless you mean “guys who the coaches think can make a play that may make a difference in the game”, it sounds like you are disrespecting these young Warriors. If I’m reading too much into it, I apologize. If I’m reading it correctly, who are you to slam these players?

If the coaches believe that Chun is the best place kicker on the team and that he is significantly better than Hadden, then he needs to be on the trip. I’m not getting how that is even up for debate. Take the guys who give you the best chance to win. Period.

Or are you suggesting that taking Davis and Muir — two guys who are scheduled to redshirt — gives us a better chance to win THIS game, THIS year?

  98. Ralph October 11, 2011 2:21 pm

Rivals list Eddie Lackey as our only verbal to date.

  99. Couch potato October 11, 2011 2:30 pm

i thought Lackey, Adams, and Woolsey committed to the Warriors? no rely on rivals or scout to get up to date info.

  100. Ralph October 11, 2011 2:38 pm

I now remember Tsai reporting on Adams and Woolsey as commits.

  102. kev-1 October 11, 2011 3:19 pm

#97 . . . I don’t think that is what was implied. If anything, it just hints at redshirt. Don’t think disrespect intended, but of course, I never write um.

  103. mikey October 11, 2011 3:22 pm

I have listed Commit so far Adams OG, Lackey OLB, Woolsey QB, and I don’t know about Turner CB but list Hawaii as only school of interest with offer from Hawaii.

All of them 2 Star but hope they play like ‘Money Ball’ (Under-rated players like BSU)

wanna be BCS school players. They are Hungry! Mo determind like ‘Mo’

Warriors will take that any day rather then 4 or 5 star who aren’t as determind and hungry.

  104. Stephen Tsai October 11, 2011 3:29 pm

    I’ve always felt Boise State’s players weren’t under-rated, they were under-publicized.

Boise does a terrible job of promoting its players, and it has some quality players, especially on defense.

Boise has a great coach, great schemes, great work ethic. But it also has great players, too.

  105. showthemsupport October 11, 2011 3:32 pm

its easy to be automatic when you dont kick outside the 30 yard line. I dont see how that comment above serves any purpose Mr. Tsai.

Glad Miah will be back. He is for sure a spark out there for a the team. Welcome Back!

Glad the game will be on ESPN! Go Warriors

  106. mctruck October 11, 2011 3:38 pm

    Wes’side, happy birthday sir.

what’s da scoop on contract offer UH made to coach Gib???, if I’m understanding what I’ve been reading thus far….he has not made a commitment?? wonder if he’s just going to coach without a contract this season, hoping to do real well and perhaps get a better offer from else where, thus leaving on a moments notice without ever signing on to a binding contract????…maybe his assistant left because he was aware of what was coming down the pike??

  107. Old School Dave October 11, 2011 3:39 pm

Old guy ramblings on ways to increase attendance at UH football games:

    1. Do away with PPV, except for the neighbor islands. Back in the day, UH used to draw 40,000 for games against the likes of Abilene Christian and Praire View. UH fans couldn’t get enough of the Rainbow Warriors back then. If you’re a fan, you should go to the game instead of watching it at uncle’s garage. Bottom line is that an empty stadium looks bad and hurts recruiting.

    2. Make the Aloha Stadium experience more pleasant by banning alcohol on the PREMISES, not just the sale inside. Sadly, it’s only a matter of time before someone is either killed or seriously injured by some alcohol fueled altercation. I like my brew like most others, but I can go 3-4 hours without it and still have a good time. Problem is that the guys who cannot handle the booze are often the biggest baboozes in making things unpleasant for other fans who just want to enjoy the game.

    3. Long term plan, build an on-campus stadium in the area of 50,000, without a track. Have UH manage it, as opposed to the Stadium Authority. It looks like the Rail is going to become reality, so make use of that eventual connect to the UH Manoa campus. The Ala Wai golf course would also be a good location – come to the game by canoe if you want, ala UW’s Husky Stadium. While I don’t like Boise State, I do like the direction their AD is taking for the future. They’re going to expand their stadium to 50,000 and the sky’s the limit. Too much manini kine, shortsighted thinking at UH, IMHO.

    Bronco Stadium Expansion link:

    http://news.boisestate.edu/update/2010/08/30/view-renderings-of-proposed-bronco-stadium-expansion/

  108. mikey October 11, 2011 3:39 pm

Wasn’t Mac a back up plan after JJ? He did get more than a what $1 Million?

We are on our way to BCS and Soon.

Look out for the Warriors BCS. Not this year but soon, if not for 2 losses we could have won

And you heard it here first, BYU and Hawaii will WIN the rest of the game this year for a final show down at Aloha. Boy what a final game that will be on National TV yet! During that final week most of other college football game will be PAU! And all Eyes will be upon us.

We are coming back to BCS – New Orleans Sugar Bowl! In fact people of New Orleans wants us ‘Hawaii Fans’ rather than say Georgia tells you something.

    I Believe in Warrior Football!

  109. mctruck October 11, 2011 3:41 pm

    ST,

I think Boise recruits players who are, “athletic” no matter what position they play…quick and athletic.

  110. mctruck October 11, 2011 3:48 pm

It seems like yesterday, most of us thought the MWC was the place to be; now all of a sudden things look pretty shakey for the MWC and the BleakEast as well.

  111. mctruck October 11, 2011 3:51 pm

just my thinking…wouldn’t it be great if the PAC12 decided to expand and invited both Boise and Hawaii to their ranks????…football only.

  112. whitey October 11, 2011 3:52 pm

i think to get a solid recruit, you need to recruit the his entire family, but then you can only bring the recruit on a visit and not the family, so if distance is the usual problem, i can see why it is hard to convince a player to commit early.

  113. mikey October 11, 2011 3:52 pm

I whole hearthedly Agree with Old School Dave:

Do away with PPV since we’re not going to get $2.5 Million going MWC anytime soon.

That’s why BYU left MWC to set up their own channel and not share with MWC.

I use to be a season ticket holder but now we can get 20+ people at our home for free Big Screen TV on DirecTV. and not even pay $475 PPV to Oceanic.

We do go to UH games but on selected basis, like Fresno and BYU game this year.

Aloha Stadium do make it very un-people-fan friendly.

Time for a change and Fill the Aloha Stadium like they use too.

  114. whitey October 11, 2011 3:57 pm

of course, the opposite is also hard to understand why the hi kids go to the mainland when they are offered a scholie to uh. but then, can see their point and administratively, uh has more problems than a similar school on the mainland. example, class availability for every student.

  115. whitey October 11, 2011 4:01 pm

no knock on aloha stadium, but if you are 60+, would you buy a seat in the yellow section??

Finally, the coaching staff is seeing that Sila is NOT

the best man to be snapping the ball. I hope they make it a permanent change in games.

Is Jackson going to be able to play on fri?

  118. mikey October 11, 2011 4:11 pm

Well BSU players are not 4 or 5 Star players.

But they are well mannered, obedient, respecful, plolite and courteous football player who gets very little ‘Personal Fouls’

That’s what a great football team does. it’s call ‘Deciplend’

  119. Kala October 11, 2011 4:12 pm

    #117.

I got seats in the red, my parents are old, and the south end zone elevator people wouldn’t let them go up without a “pass”. There’s a bunch of jerks that work at the “NO” aloha stadium!

  120. Shoko October 11, 2011 4:23 pm

I think most of the credit of BSU’s success is attributed to the coach and staff that can get players that are not four or five star recruits and use their strengths to fit perfectly into their system. If Coach Pete ever decided to leave, which he has adamantly said he won’t, BSU football might just turn into a mediocre program. That guy is amazing.

P.S. Still hate those donks tho. 😉

  121. koakane October 11, 2011 4:25 pm

‘a’ole loa to the yellow section

after reading the various happening around the conference scenes and following all the talk about the WAC and MW I’m placing my faith/belief that someone in the UH system is looking out for the athletic program. that person is plotting, planning scenarios which will provide UH with options and opportunities to be proactive instead of reactive.

time will prove me right or wrong but I seriously hope in the long run UH is at least in the mix.

  122. koakane October 11, 2011 4:27 pm

Thanks for these tips. One thing I should also believe is always that credit cards giving a 0% interest often lure consumers in zero monthly interest, instant endorsement and easy internet balance transfers, however beware of the real factor that will certainly void your own 0% easy neighborhood annual percentage rate and throw you out into the terrible house fast.

“While rumors continue to swirl around Boise State and a potential invite to the Big East — the New York Post reported that an invitation to Boise State is “imminent” — the Broncos’ football team is trying to prepare for its first Mountain West game.”

“People are making way too big of a deal about that (Boise State-Big East talk). I was just stating facts on maybe some merits to go or not. I think that’s a long ways off. I think our president and athletic director are looking at every situation,” Boise State football coach Chris Petersen said Tuesday on the weekly Mountain West conference call.”

“I think the conference we’re in is great, I really do.”

The only job that Coach Pete in Boise would even bat an eyelash toward would be the Oregon jobs. And most Boise fans know that. Riley is on the hotseat at OSU, so the possibility is certainly there for Boise’s coach to leave. But why would he? If money was truly his ambition, he would have been gone already. He has a pretty good situation there going in Boise. He is the coach of a juggernaut program that has a NATIONAL PROFILE, regardless of conference affiliation. America (and espn) loves them some Boise state and those Boise folks will mortgage the grandkids to make sure they are able to keep that coach in place for as long as they can. In short, he is not going anywhere.

Manoa should have 2 or 3 All American types every year but us no can get the top players, from our own state.Anybody want to help UH Football,if you know any of the families lobby for the home team. UH is doing a great job considering our best is mostly 3stars. So support the program or get out of way

BSU has a culture of football success. It goes waaay back. There’s total support from all aspects of the community, the man in the street, political bigwigs. leaders of business and Upper Campus. Everyone and everything Boise is geared to helping the football team succeed.

Petersen didn’t ceate it. He stepped into it and took it to another level.

  142. bigislandkurt October 11, 2011 4:53 pm

My good bradduh A-Joe! Call me crazy, but I believe Boise could go into any conference right now (sans the SEC) and compete to win it all. If it was truly about having a fluff schedule on their way to the BCS each year, wouldn’t they have chosen to stay in the WAC? I think Boise has taken a page out of Pat Hill’s “Any team, any time, any place” book of scheduling. They want to compete and play good teams because they truly believe that they can win….and most of the time they do. The difference between them and Pat Hill’s teams is that Boise has won. So much that it has the rest of us green with envy. Me included.

    BIK

  147. A-joe October 11, 2011 5:01 pm

    Boise not going.

  148. wafan October 11, 2011 5:03 pm

I think the major difference between BSU and UH is that the major and minor players in Boise believe and will do whatever it takes to ensure success.

In Hawai’i, folks question, believe and do the minimum only when it suits their needs.

  149. Garret October 11, 2011 5:10 pm

shoko, interesting read on 126 about academics. some of the other tsaikos mentioed this and also said bsu does not have a phd program.

The Tsaikos that mentioned that were *way* behind the times on what has been going on at Boise State. Their football team makes the news, but they have spent over $100 mil in upgrading their academic side also. They also took some of their less “academic” programs and moved them to a JC in Boise so that the academic standards for their campus would be higher.

I know that they have PhD programs in at least Electrical and Computer Engineering, Geosciences and Geophysics. They have been fundraising for the capital and salary positions needed to add PhD programs as quickly as they can.

  151. Garret October 11, 2011 5:13 pm

Washington State’s AD gave a VERY candid interview where he revealed that the only reason the Pac-10 invited Colorado last year was because they needed to create instability in the Big 12 so that Texas and Texas A&M would go to the Pac-10! The *only* schools that the Pac-10 cared about adding were Texas and Texas A&M, all the other additions were just to get them.

Apparently he was in on PAC TV meetings while at WSU. TV execs told them Texas was the only school that made a difference for TV money. He said inviting Colorado was purely a strategic move to break up the Big 12 so they could try to get Texas and Texas A&M. When that didn’t go down, they added Utah just to round out to 12.

There is a link to the actual audio of the interview if you want to hear it yourself in this thread.

  152. A-joe October 11, 2011 5:14 pm

There is no doubt Boise can play against bigger programs. We can speculate all we want as to why or how Boise chooses to stay or go. We can even pull the latest and greatest article from our favorite online news source, post it here to boast our claims.

But the fact remains, Boise is not leaving the MWC anytime soon. They don’t have the infrastructure in place to sustain such a move.

For a program that’s demonstrated it’s intellectual prowess on the Gridiron all these years, moving to another conference now would be a pretty dumbass move.

  153. Garret October 11, 2011 5:14 pm

The MWC exit fee is $0…from what I’ve read, you just give up your final year’s conference revenue. C-USA has a *very* different exit fee–5 years of TV revenue plus $500k.

Schools leaving C-USA must pay their annual share of television revenue under dual contracts with Fox Sports Network and CBS Sports for five years and an additional one-time $500,000 fee.

BYU has apparently turned down the Big 12 for now, but hopes to join a conference sometime in the future.

At least one source reported on Tuesday evening that BYU had told the Big 12 Conference that they were staying independent and not interested in joining the Big 12…that is only partially true.

The LDS Church has for some time wanted independence to be free to play in various regions across the country, without the geographical limits a conference schedule would put on their athletic programs. Now that they have that independence, there is a significant push from the LDS Church to honor existing contracts, both with the teams on their upcoming schedules and the bowls that BYU has agreements with.

I am told tonight by a source very close to the program that “this is no way a permanent situation”, and that the BYU administration is “very well aware of the changes going on in intercollegiate athletics, and will revisit the possibilities of a conference affiliation in the future.”

    http://gregswaim.com/2011/10/is-byu-staying-independent/

  158. A-joe October 11, 2011 5:44 pm

The MWC has an exit fee in place.

If Air Force leaves the Mountain West for the Big East, it will be the first league school to pay an exit fee. That fee is expected to be about $5 million.

After Utah, BYU and then TCU gave notice they were leaving in the summer and fall of 2010 with no more than a wave goodbye, the league’s board of directors revised the bylaws in June.

Now, any member resigning before June 30 of the year prior to departure, as Utah did, will forfeit its final year of league revenue. WOW!!!!!! they used 250 volunteers and made 13 milllion phone calls throughout the usa. the athletic dept was the third largest money, $89.6 million. during this period they had 37,215 new donors. this is another WOW!!!!

  164. HawaiiMongoose October 11, 2011 7:04 pm

It’s still quite possible that Missouri will go to the SEC and the Big 12 will backfill with Louisville, Cincinnati and West Virginia. That will pull the rug out from under the Big East’s grand expansion plan. They will be left with UConn, Rutgers and USF and will have to add a minimum of five new all-sports members. Their best available all-sports choices will be UCF, Temple, ECU, Houston and SMU; if Houston and SMU decide to pass, they’ll have to resort to two from among Memphis, UAB, Southern Mississippi and Marshall.

You could probably add Alabama to that group and it wouldn’t keep AQ status. I can’t see BSU putting its football team there. Navy might decline too, and that would cause Air Force to pass. In short, any threat to the MWC could disappear in the next couple of days if the SEC makes its move.

  165. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 7:23 pm

    al,

perception may be that AF/service academies athletics is paid for in whole by taxpayers money but that’s not totally true.

The Naval Academy Athletic Association and Air Force Academy Athletic Association are the funding arms for those respective schools. They get their money from tickets sold, concessions etc.

i doubt that the AF academy “upper campus” will foot the $5,000,000 bill. it will have to come out of the Association.

As a fan of Hawaii and hoping for stability in the conference we are moving into next season, I hope that the SEC takes Mizzou.

  168. Garret October 11, 2011 7:51 pm

    A-Joe,

I stand corrected. I should have remembered that $5 mil exit fee, that was a good thing that the MWC did.

  169. Garret October 11, 2011 7:54 pm

    HawaiiMoongoose,

I really do hope that the Big 12 raids the Big East, as that will solve a lot of problems for the MWC.

In my opinion, Missouri’s decision really isn’t important. If Missouri goes to the SEC, then the Big 12 may replace them with a Big East school. If Missouri doesn’t go to the SEC, then the SEC may take a Big East team (West Virginia). Either way, Missouri’s decision could result in 1 Big East team being taken.

  170. Shoko October 11, 2011 7:58 pm

It’s all about leverage. Big 12 has it and the Big East doesn’t.

  171. Garret October 11, 2011 8:01 pm

I think that the big variable isn’t Missouri…it is whether or not the Big 12 wants to stay at 10 teams or go to 12. If the Big 12 stops at 10 teams, the Big East will probably remain strong. In fact, if the Big 12 takes Louisville, the Big East’s AQ numbers might actually get stronger.

    Two major considerations:

    1. If BYU isn’t going to the Big 12, then that leaves one more space that the Big 12 might fill with a Big East team.

    2. The Big 12’s TV contract actually discourages them from going to 12 teams. ESPN owns their Tier 1 rights which includes the conference title game. ESPN told the Big 12 that they would pay the Big 12 the same whether or not they had a title game. So, if the Big 12 goes to 12 teams, they have to split the money with more schools without getting a single penny for the title game’s TV rights.

The Big 12 won’t get any extra money for a title game until they renegotiate their Tier 1 TV rights…and that contract has 4 more football seasons to run. Given how things are going with TV rights, the Big 12 could expand to 12 in time for that contract negotiations and get 3x their current money. That is why the 6-year pledge ties everyone until after the TV contract is renegotiated…after the TV money goes to $30 mil/school, they won’t have to worry about defections.

  172. al October 11, 2011 8:04 pm

iwwthm…however, the perception by the public would still put egg on some general’s face. especially when so many don’t even have a roof over their heads nor a hot meal in their belly.

  174. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 8:08 pm

    al,

that’s true. often times perception is reality, at least in the political world anyway. and last time i checked, academies and DOD have to go before Senate/House committees to beg for money.

  175. Garret October 11, 2011 8:08 pm

No matter what Missouri decides, they will play in the Big 12 next season. Is the problem that Missouri cannot decide or is the problem that the Missouri doesn’t have the votes to get into the SEC but no other candidate does either?

The Big 12 will operate as a 10-member league, including TCU and Missouri, for the 2012-13 school year, interim commissioner Chuck Neinas said in a Tuesday teleconference.

The league’s configuration after that, Neinas said, will depend on what decision Missouri administrators make on the school’s future conference affiliation.

    http://www.star-telegram.com/2011/10/11/3437635/big-12-sticking-with-10-teams.html

  176. Garret October 11, 2011 8:10 pm

The Big East will pay Air Force much more money than the MWC does. Under the new TV contract that the Big East will get, Air Force will come out more than $5 mil ahead from what they would have gotten from the MWC.

In other words, Air Force isn’t going to be grilled over that $5 mil exit fee. So many MWC schools would happily pay that fee also.

  177. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 8:16 pm

What I am dying to see is what a conference made up of CUSA schools + 2 service academies will command on the TV market.

Worst case scenario is WV, Louis, Cincy leaving for the Big 12.

Does the Big East expect to get the same kind of money with so many of the core FB teams gone?

Or is the Big East going to give some of its basketball money to FB-only members too?

  178. Garret October 11, 2011 8:18 pm

I mentioned yesterday about how ESPN told the ACC to raid the Big East after the Big East rejected ESPN’s contract offer. CBS Sports has an interesting conspiracy theory article.

The resulting stories have been eye-opening — none more than a report in this weekend’s Boston Globe that featured the following quote from Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo on the subject of the ACC’s decision to poach Syracuse and Pittsburgh from the Big East: “We always keep our television partners close to us. … TV — ESPN — is the one who told us what to do.”

    Is this surprising?

Absolutely not — because there’s been speculation for months that the Big East sealed its fate last May when it rejected a nine-year, $1.4 billion television contract from ESPN. Long story not so long, the Big East decided it would rather open up bidding to NBC and Fox than accept that deal from ESPN, meaning the Big East was probably going to sign a deal with NBC or Fox, meaning NBC or Fox likely was on the verge of gaining a relevant share of the college sports landscape, and that’s not something ESPN (or anybody in ESPN’s position of power) would have liked.

ST . . . The heading to your picture of Harding and Funaki should have read “two old farts.” Are they about the same age? Maybe Funaki is a year or two older?

  180. Garret October 11, 2011 8:22 pm

ESPN may be trying to destroy the Big East because NBC and Fox would love to bid on the Big East contract. Having more than 1 bidder will drive up the value of the Big East’s TV deal. They may not get the $1.4 bil that ESPN offered…but they will get many, many times the $%^# contract that the MWC is stuck with now.

The MWC’s TV contract has been seriously underpaying them for years. Taking away all outside TV rights drove BYU away and may eliminate UH’s PPV. They should have been getting much more money, which would have helped them build their programs and would help UH starting next year.

  181. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 8:23 pm

I want to commend Army for its latest comments on how they aren’t interested in moving to the Big LEast. Hard to believe that there actually is a school out there that cares about the student athlete above buying snake oil from a man named Marinatto.

“Right now we are happy where we are and happy what were doing,” Corrigan said on Thursday’s MetroNews Talk Line. “Our mission is ultimately to produce leaders of character to lead the United States Army. We think our best position is where we are right now.”

one thing developed by two brothers that is the root of all this evil power mongering.

    iwonderwhy,

I remember how forceful you were that no CUSA school would want to join the Big East. When I pointed out how East Carolina has applied something like 14 times already, you said that was only one example. I didn’t want to go into detail back then about how SMU had public statements by their leadership and websites set up trying to get the Big East’s interest. Still, I think that it is clear now that the Big East can probably take any CUSA school they want and they may be able to take MWC schools also.

Every scenario for Big East destruction assumes the Big 12 will expand to 12. That ignores the facts of their TV contract where the ESPN contract won’t pay for a title game and the Fox contract won’t pay a single penny more whether or not they have 10, 12, or 16 schools. So, the Big 12 will have to accept taking significantly less money to go beyond 10. They may do so, but they are best served to wait a few years for the 11th and 12th schools…and BYU is leaving the door open for then (their WAC agreement ends after next season) and delays gives the Big East time to survive.

Think that the Big East can’t rebuild from CUSA schools? They *already* did that once and ESPN offered them $1.4 bil recently.

  186. Garret October 11, 2011 8:29 pm

Army has *never* been in any of the published scenarios for the Big East. They have been clear that they aren’t looking to join a conference. When Army tried to be a CUSA member, they were something like 6-23 until they quit the conference.

  187. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 8:34 pm

    #187,

What *published* scenarios are you referring to? Media in general or documents coming straight out of the Big LEast? Cuz I would take this quote as the Big LEast wanting Army.

“Mueh insisted: “The Big East wants Army. Absolutely.” The Black Knights, however, have concerns their program might not be ready for the rigors of playing West Virginia and other top teams in the Big East on a regular basis.”

    http://www.denverpost.com/sports/ci_19073868

  188. Garret October 11, 2011 8:37 pm

Chris Petersen sure talked candidly about why Boise State might go to the Big East:

“What are we talking about here? We’re talking about money,” Boise State coach Chris Peterson said Monday. “That’s what they’ve got to figure out. Who’s going to be in the league anyway when it’s all said and done? It’s all this if, if, if, if.

“But if the money thing all makes sense — that’s been the big issue with all this stuff — then I think you take the next step.”

    ST,

Why do you say that ‘This might be the good ol’ days?’. Are implying that the future of Hawaii football doesn’t look good???

  192. Garret October 11, 2011 8:49 pm

    iwonderwhy:

You are looking at a quote from the Denver Post about the Big East scenarios? Sure Air Force wants Army to join, but the Big East and Army seemed to have understood a long time ago that Army wasn’t going to join.

    New Jersey’s top newspaper:

    Big East East:

    Rutgers

    UCONN

    UCF

    USF

    Temple

    Navy

    Big East West with BSU:

    BSU

    West Virginia

    Louisville

    Cincy

    Air Force

    SMU or Houston

    Big East West without BSU:

    West Virginia

    Louisville

    Cincy

    Air Force

    SMU

    Houston

    http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2011/10/big_east_continues_to_explore.html

    Sporting News:

Big East additions: BSU, Temple, UCF, Air Force, Navy, with SMU/Houston waiting for spots

    http://aol.sportingnews.com/ncaa-football/story/2011-10-11/report-boise-state-temple-invites-imminent

    West Virginia’s main newspaper:

    Division I:

    Rutgers

    Connecticut

    South Florida

    Central Florida

    Temple

    Navy

    Division II:

    West Virginia

    Air Force

    SMU

    Houston

    Louisville

    Cincinnati

    http://www.wvmetronews.com/wvu.cfm?func=displayfullstory&storyid=48447

I can quote the NY Post (I think I posted that on this blog yesterday) and probably 6 other newspapers that show Big East’s priorities and division options…and they all leave out Army. Many of these were published *before* Army came out and said they weren’t interested in the Big East.

  193. Garret October 11, 2011 8:52 pm

Posting 10 published scenarios for the Big East that all do not include Army would definitely be overkill for this blog. I hope that those 3 qualify as *published*. One thing to note is that the newspapers located in Big East areas are the ones NOT mentioning Army while the Denver Post quotes Air Force’s AD as being the Army interest.

And if you actually study what Air Force’s AD was saying, he was acknowledging that Army was NOT in the plans for Big East’s expansion due to lack of interest by Army.

  194. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 8:56 pm

    #193,

Umm ok, I dont know why this is even worth arguing about but fine. I guess they don’t list the divisions out like you have listed above, but the Washington Post does call ALL 3 service Academies in the Big LEast a “scenario”.

“One scenario for beefing up Big East football would make a powerful statement in terms of prestige and patriotism, with all three service academies — Air Force, Army and Navy — targeted for inclusion.”

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/colleges/big-east-conference-considers-adding-six-teams-for-football-with-one-scenario-calling-for-the-service-academies-to-join/2011/10/10/gIQA4Y0zaL_story.html

  195. Garret October 11, 2011 8:57 pm

Several people have asked what I have been trying not to ask all day…ST’s comments sure do sound like things are not looking that positive for UH.

I would take ST’s comment about Aloha Stadium very seriously.

The ESPN comment is also important–I love being able to see the games and being able to watch replays on my computer or phone whenever I want.

Next season UH games will probably end up on the mtn network…and Dish customers don’t get that network. Or, the games will end up on Oceanic PPV…and Dish customers cannot get Oceanic PPV. How much less will UH be seen starting next season on the mainland and how will that hurt recruiting?

  196. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 11, 2011 9:10 pm

Question 1: How many members of a conference does it take to secure a binding exit/solidarity clause?

Does it require unanimous consent, super majority or majority?

Question 2: Would the Big 12 care if the Big LEast exit clause went up from 27 months to 3-4 years and $30M?

    Not their kuleana right? 😛

Regrettably, for many cloud computing platforms the vehicle analogy you provide doesn’t work out. If you see an automobile as a means to an end, and all you care about is getting there, then you need an application platform like Google’s AppEngine. Here you just add an application, and it will be taken care of. If on the other hand you run ec2, you’re no longer worrying about computer hardware, but still about instances and virtual servers. They all run OS’s that need to be maintained; it’s like taking taxi’s but still having to know everything about the taxi’s engines. I predict that down the road we’ll move towards AppEngine like models or ‘managed clouds’.

That October 10 Washington Post article is old, the Big East had a teleconference after that article was written with dozens of articles written AFTER teleconference leaving out Army and listing the other schools I mentioned. Even that article notes that AF and Navy are in discussions with the Big East and Army is being “courted”…they don’t even say that the BE is courting them, so this is consistent with AF talking to Army with no interest from Army.

I also was specifically referring to newspapers local to Big East teams…what Big East team is located in DC?

Note also that the Washington Post published an article on October 11…and says that Army is NOT a candidate for the Big East. So, the one East Coast newspaper that you could point to that mentioned Army specifically said a day later that Army was not on the list for the Big East. And Navy and Air Force were still on the Big East’s list despite Army not wanting to join because of Army’s struggles in CUSA.

Today, I went to the beach front with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

  301. Kasey Dumphy October 20, 2011 10:34 am

The stirrings of the hungry poor are spreading rapidly. How long before we have the BDF outside Purity, Brydens etc.?Forget global warming, feed the people. If the Anthropomorphic Global Warming theory is indeed true (which I doubt), I prefer to be 1 degree warmer, than starving.I strongly suspect most Bajans would agree.Read what The Christian Science Monitor reports:” Americans may fret that Wheat Thins cost 15 percent more than a year ago but in poor nations, such price hikes aren’t taken lightly. In Ivory Coast last week, women rioted against higher food costs, leaving one person dead. In Haiti, four people were killed in protests last week over a 50 percent rise in the cost of food staples in the past year. From Egypt to Vietnam, price rises of 40 percent or more for rice, wheat, and corn are stirring unrest and forcing governments to take drastic steps, such as blocking grain exports and arresting farmers who hoard surpluses. The UN International Fund for Agriculture predicts food riots will become common on the world scene for at least a year. The World Bank says 33 countries face unrest from higher prices in both food and energy. Even in grain-rich America, wholesale food prices are rising at a rate not seen in 27 years. The most acute “ag-flation,” however, is in Asia and Africa, where food costs take up a higher proportion of family income. And the face of hunger is now seen more in cities as a historic shift takes place with more than half of the world’s population soon to be living in or near urban areas. The food price hikes may not be temporary, according to the UN World Food Program, which sees long-lasting causes, such as spreading deserts and more demand for grain-fed meat. The WFP itself, which feeds about 73 million of the most destitute people, warns its rich donor nations that it will require more money for some time to come. Its latest need: $500 million more by May 1. The food price crisis has created a welcome stir about government policy. Last week, World Bank President Robert Zoellick called for increased agricultural production in poorer nations while warning rich countries not to set up more trade protection and subsidies for farmers. “This economic isolationism signals a defeatism that will reap losses, not the gains, of globalization,” he said. Indeed, a government’s attempt to control food markets, either for farmers or for urban dwellers, often creates the kind of distortions that contribute to higher prices. One of the worst examples is a rush by Europe and the US to devote more farmland to growing biofuels – a dubious action to curb greenhouse gases. In 2008, about 18 percent of grain in the US will go to make ethanol and, according to the Earth Policy Institute, such production over the past two years could have fed nearly 250 million people. UN officials are split over their high priority given to biofuels in the fight against climate change, with Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon now suggesting a review of that policy. But international bodies also need to review reduced investment in agricultural productivity. A second “green revolution” from scientific research, like that seen during the 1960s, could transform farming once again. In Asia, where two-thirds of the poor live, growth in farm productivity is down to 1 percent a year compared with 2.5 percent two decades ago. More money needs to go toward research in creating new strains of grain and toward better irrigation. Too many nations are rushing to industrialize and urbanize at the expense of farmers. Food riots signal the need to rethink global stability and the critical role of those who till the land and feed us all. “

  304. web design October 20, 2011 12:08 pm

Adrian hi, thanks for your comment. The Delete/Backspace keys are disabled since I was not sure about what should happen when the user presses them. If the user presses for example the “Delete” key the text on the right of the cursor should move one position to the left. But this could lead to a text which is not valid for the mask. I could alter the behavior so the text will not move to the left and just clear the cursor’s position but I think the best solution (in terms of usability) was to disable the functionality altogether.
