Mission accomplished

It should be a happy return for the Warriors, who head home today following last night’s road victory against Louisiana Tech.

Several Warriors, including linebacker Corey Paredes (sore knee), should benefit from the upcoming bye week.

Here’s Richard Torres, who scored on an interception return:

Major Mahalo to Curt & Meg, who managed to get us the best seats in the house!

The German food was very authentic. The beer was taste tested by Koakane & (J)J, the rest of us just managed to stay sober long enuff to enjoy watching Julie do a sensational Chickin skin dance!

Warriors gotta rest up , heal up, catch up on academics.

and, continue to improve, and get ready, physically and mentality,

    for eight consecutive games.

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  13. ai-eee-soos October 2, 2011 1:46 am

ST: Do we still need an opponent for 9-08-2012 ?

San Jose State may be available (but offer a home game at Aloha Stadium only).

  14. al October 2, 2011 1:50 am

make room folks…the band wagon just got filled up.

  15. al October 2, 2011 1:57 am

12…sometimes you gotta ask yourself, is it worth playing that 13th game?

sacrificing a much needed bye week, is it worth it?

the physical and mental rest mid-season not to mention the chance to catch up on some academic issues would be a more than welcomed break.

not too bad if we played 8 home games and 5 road games.

we really should be petitioning for that extra week in the season as the only true beneficial “hawaii exemption”. applying this early start or later start would give us two bye weeks. perhaps the earlier start would be most helpful to both our opponent and ourselves, because it would only work if both hawaii and its opening opponent were allowed to start the fall camp a week early as well.

been throwing this out every year for so many years. hopefully, one day this will become a reality for hawaii.

  19. al October 2, 2011 2:09 am

was good to see that smattering of black n green amidst the sea of red.

near the end of the game as that red sea started to dissipate in speed of light-like fashion except for that green clad fans of the warriors in that one corner it sure looked a lot like christmas literally and on the scoreboard.

  20. al October 2, 2011 2:09 am

didn’t bet the house, but, managed to get some extra change yesterday.

  21. TChahng October 2, 2011 2:11 am

    Congrats on a great win!

  22. al October 2, 2011 2:15 am

unsung hero of the game…has got to be london sapolu.

after playing a very yeoman-like game last week replacing the oft injured lefiti. sapolu came in right after sila made yet another errant snap and took control out there. a feel good story for a kid who has played in the shadows of dad’s great accomplishments all of his life.

  23. al October 2, 2011 2:16 am

…while at the same time i really felt bad for lefiti who has endured so many injuries to finally have the opportunity to start.

  24. A-joe October 2, 2011 2:17 am

This was a defining game for the Warriors. A pivotal game that set the course to their season.

  25. Pomai October 2, 2011 2:29 am

  26. Mokie the warrior October 2, 2011 2:31 am

  27. al October 2, 2011 2:38 am

adrien cole #44 la tech linebacker is probably glad that he doesn’t have to go up against the runaway truck a.k.a. joey iosefa or did he play more like a runaway rhino?

  28. al October 2, 2011 2:39 am

#26…that was a gift from la tech.

  29. al October 2, 2011 2:41 am

believe that many of those kicks were pooched by design to keep the ball away from a certain return man in red who was giving us “fitte”s.

  30. al October 2, 2011 2:41 am

…and we lack the leg to boot it out of the park.

I agree with Al–London Sapolu did a great job and deserves a lot of praise. He may be easy to overlook because the best thing for a center is to not be noticed…a center (unless you are Samson making a downfield block) only seems to be noticed when there is a bad snap, penalty, or sack from the interior.

  46. wafan October 2, 2011 5:47 am

What was up with that 20+ minute delay?

I guess the replay official could not hear the whistle.

Good thing Mack got fired up! Loved his, “Get your hands off of me!” move. Good thing, too, he was not mic’d.

It is really bad when both teams dispute the officiating on the same call.

  65. Garret October 2, 2011 7:00 am

UH went up nicely in the computer rankings after the win, as expected. Unfortunately, both the WAC and MWC have *really* struggled in nonconference play this year. The MWC has really gone down (TCU counts for the MWC but won’t be a top-10 team this year, etc.).

    WAC:

45 Nevada (they are 1-3, but they have the #1 SOS so far this season)

    92 Hawaii

    94 Fresno State

    108 SJSU

    131 Idaho

    133 La Tech

    143 Utah State

    154 NMSU

    MWC

    6 BSU

    38 TCU

    43 SDSU

    59 Air Force

    66 Wyoming

    123 UNLV

    129 Colorado State

    207 New Mexico (207!)

    http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/bkc1011.htm

  66. Garret October 2, 2011 7:04 am

The good thing is that the schedule sets up nicely for UH. The bad thing is that it will be really hard for UH to earn any computer points to move up in the computer rankings. Here is the rest of the schedule:

    108 SJSU

    154 NMSU

    131 Idaho

    143 Utah State

    45 Nevada

    94 Fresno State

    166 Tulane

    50 BYU

As we’ve seen from past years, beating teams ranked extremely low can actually result in UH going *down* in the rankings because they hurt the SOS so much.

  67. Garret October 2, 2011 7:07 am

Conference rankings go by nonconference games…and the MWC is far, far below all of the AQ conferences this year. UH needs the MWC teams to win their nonconference games and get at least 1 team in the top 5 and at least 2 teams in the top 25 or that AQ appeal will be really weak.

The Big East is actually the #2 conference in the computers and the MWC is #7, where before this season the MWC was close to the Big East. And that is with the MWC’s #2 team (TCU) counting for the MWC instead of the Big East.

  68. letsgowarriors October 2, 2011 7:09 am

Clapp has earned the right to be the #1 slotback, IMO.

  69. letsgowarriors October 2, 2011 7:09 am

great move by the coaches to start Sampson at X. probably a big reason why the offense is running smoother.

  70. RedZone October 2, 2011 7:23 am

If Aaron Brown keeps playing the way he does he could end up in the pros. Size is not a factor with Sampson. He plays big. Pollard got over 200 yards receiving but he must have run a thousand yards in the game. I like how Mo frustrates other coaches. Clapps number should be 1. London is a Sapolu. Need I say more? Iosefa has become a duo threat. Our future opponents must be shaking their heads. This was Tank’s best game. i am so happy for him.

    Way to go Warriors.

  71. CoolEthan October 2, 2011 7:26 am

  74. Matt October 2, 2011 7:29 am

    Garret,

Not sure if the ratings were still being updated.

I just looked at the latest Sagarin ratings and it has

    51 Nevada

    76 Hawaii

    83 Fresno State

    109 Utah State

    110 SJSU

    112 Louisiana Tech

    123 Idaho

    148 NMSU

    161 Tulane

    51 BYU

The link you provided above was for basketball. Correct link is http://www.usatoday.com/sports/sagarin/fbc11.htm

Here’s where our non conference opponents rank so far:

    95 Colorado

    35 Washington

    125 UNLV

    159 UC Davis

  75. Matt October 2, 2011 7:33 am

  84. Da Punchbowl Kid October 2, 2011 8:15 am

    Good Morning Gangeez! 🙂

Don’t ya just love the morning after a big Warrior win?

    al –

    Your #27 –

Didn’t Cole and Iosefa bang heads on that one play? Immovable object meets irresistable force. Love the way Iosefa just put his shoulder down, stayed in bounds and “counter punched” Cole’s hit. Did you notice on one of the very next plays, UH ran what looked like the same play, and Cole didn’t hit nearly so hard and left the game for a bit after that second collision. Iosefa is relatively new to the RB position, but is getting better with each snap. He was a nice “smash mouth” back to have against LA Tech’s defense. There was one play where almost the whole Dawg defense had to gang tackle Iosefa to stop his forward momentum, and they couldn’t take him to the ground. Gotta love it!

  85. A-TEAM October 2, 2011 8:16 am

Sila is still a good player, but you have to make adjust when needed. Agreed that L. Sapolu looks like his dad and came delivered when his ticket got punched. I like that more more redshirt freshmens stepping up. It going to a good season this year. But really looking forward 4 next year.

  86. Da Punchbowl Kid October 2, 2011 8:17 am

    UH 41 Them 21

  87. Da Punchbowl Kid October 2, 2011 8:23 am

    Warriors –

    THIS is who you ARE!

Stay focused, humble and hungry, and you’ll get better each week. Said it before, sayin’ it again, this is a team which has a chance to be very good in all phases of the game, Offense, Defense, and Special Teams. Keep working hard and that’s gonna happen.

You made Warrior fans proud. Finish!

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  88. papajoe2 October 2, 2011 8:36 am

No forget Wahine Soccer today at 5.

  89. BowsForever October 2, 2011 8:37 am

This is the UH I was looking for this season.

Still needs improvement of course, but Moniz is his usual rock-solid self (smartest, most efficient UH QB ever? I think so!), and Pollard had a great game.

Special teams redemption for blocked PAT with a TD, Torres continues to show his high football IQ, and on and on.

    Good win!

  90. Ipu Man October 2, 2011 8:42 am

SJSU has a place kicker from Stockholm,Sweden, Jens Alvernik, a senior. Wonder if he does long distance field goals? BTW, wasn’t

it great that UH tried that long one! Gutsy.

  91. Ipu Man October 2, 2011 8:47 am

Hope Rolo tries a “hook & ladder” play someday…

  92. Stephen Tsai October 2, 2011 8:51 am

On Moniz’s punt, he called it himself. They were going to do it in the first half but he had too much tape on his ankles.

  93. Da Punchbowl Kid October 2, 2011 8:53 am

Where are you posting from, Stephen?

  94. Da Punchbowl Kid October 2, 2011 8:57 am

That punt by Moniz will be a nice play to have in his bag of tricks.

  95. tom mui October 2, 2011 8:57 am

    GOOD MORNING HAWAII!

AL hasn’t surfaced since 3:00am this morning – hope he’s sleeping late.

I think it was ST that mentioned Jackson had gotten injured somehow prior to the game. Hope he is OK.

    ST – great shots.

  96. al October 2, 2011 9:00 am

i actually felt like that 52 yd attempt was ill advised.

up 20-6 at the 35 yd line 4th and 19 with 1:45 left on the clock.

kicking game is struggling, one kick already went awry.

what if that kick was blocked? we give up mid field possession or worse a return to the house.

pooch kick and try to pin them back around the ten would have been fine giving them a longer field and take off 25 seconds or so.

    or

go for a ten yard pass pattern in hopes that the receiver could get the 19 yards, if not we turn it over with twenty seconds off the clock and the ball on the 25 yard line. (8 seconds if we drop the ball.)

or maybe that halfback pass trick.

  97. Stephen Tsai October 2, 2011 9:02 am

  101. postmanke October 2, 2011 9:05 am

I like the call with Moniz punting..

but hey, we have an NFL punter on the team let him pin it – unless there was an option to go for it. whatever the case, Moniz needs just a little more lag and he good!

  102. al October 2, 2011 9:05 am

he should go take some dancing lessons to increase his fluidity.

    or watch some ilaoa tapes.

by the time he is a senior he’ll remind folks of jerome bettis.

  103. らす べがす October 2, 2011 9:05 am

    decent win for UH.

still worried that Mac doesn’t have that killer instinct

instead of trying to run the clock out (not our offense’s forte’)

we should have just gone out to score, after all LA Tech’s D

  108. A-joe October 2, 2011 9:12 am

Each year, every team needs to re-invent and find themselves. Who they are. What are they’re made of. A defining moment emerges when everything just “clicks” and make sense.

-My high school team had heir defining moment during a night at summer camp. Everything just made sense. Everything began to fall into place. That year, the team went on to be league champions for the 2nd time in school history.

-After an embarrassing loss to the Eagles at home the 49ers found their turning point in a game against the Detroit Lions. That game set the tone, defined their team on their way to their 5th Super Bowl championship.

-Colt Brennan and the ’07 team found their defining moment against San Jose State. That game solidified their team chemistry and propelled them through the rest of the season.

What did the warriors find out last night:

    – All of their hard work is paying off. The system works if they just believe in it.

    – Individually, the players have found what roles they play. What they can best contribute to the team.

    – The Warriors can comeback from a deficit, build upon a lead and dominate on the road.

    – Everyone knows they’ve got each others back. From Mac not backing down, fighting tooth and nail to “re-reverse” a controversial phantom “5th Down” to the O-line standing up to the blatant cheap shot hit laid on Brett Leonard.

-The coaching staff can see the light going on above every player. The players are hungry for more. The coaches are more than willing to deliver.

    – Coach Shaw has got the O-line humming. They’ve developed a thick skin and a good “reset” button to rebound from mistakes

-Coach Aranda is like a kid in a candy store. He’s found his D to be interchangeable and won’t lose intensity with any combination on the field.

This game will be their defining moment of the season.

    http://www.shreveporttimes.com/article/20111002/SPORTS0203/110020340/Jimmy-Watson-Hawaii-dominates-La-Tech-WAC-opener

The contest was a typical testy affair between the Bulldogs and Warriors with some fisticuffs displayed on both sides. It may also have been the worst officiated game in WAC history, if you listen to the Tech fans and administration.”

“I will pursue a review of the officiating of this game with the WAC office,” Tech athletic director Bruce Van De Velde said. “The officiating isn’t why we lost the game. Hawaii is very good. But it was officiated badly.”

Hawaii was allowed to receive the kickoff to open the game and to open the second half.

“I still haven’t gotten an explanation on that one,” Dykes said.

And there was a 22-minute delay in the second quarter when the officials reviewed whether Hawaii had been given five downs to secure a first down. They initially said it did happen and gave Tech the ball at the Hawaii 22. Then the call was reversed and Tech was given the ball at its own 36.

“I’m still waiting to find out what happened there,” Dykes said.

Another cheap shot by a typical mainland journalist with this comment to start off the article:

Maybe it was because Hawaii was allowed to do a penalty-free Haka dance before the game and it intimidated Tech.

Game Ball to Sapolu for backing up his team mates.

Chris Tanaka showed a film clip of Brett Leonard lying flat of his face,

Sapolu went after the LA Tech guys. Sapolu and TWO LA Tech guys were flagged.

    All three flags cancelled out.

So San Pablo plays at BYWho before hosting the Warriors. If they beat the Cougars they will be on a 3 game winning streak with 2 games in a row away from home. If they lose to BMU, they will be glad to be at home with 2 games in a row on the road. Caution to the Warriors: Don’t take this team lightly. Anything can happen when you play an away game. What if those horrible calls that the referees made at LaTech went their way? It could have had different results from the final score.

The nearly four hours spent at Pinky’s yesterday turned out to be a lot of fun with over a dozen flat screen tvs in an area about the size a standard classroom in a local high school. About 15 Tsaikos and about 25 other local fans were going ballistic throughout the entire afternoon.

Boy, does J/J have a loud voice!! It was like sitting next to a foghorn.

Is there any way that tv sets can be lowered in public places without having them blocked by people walking in front of them throughout the game.

We had a small radio with us, but the noise was too loud to hear an analysis or explanation as to what was going on with the delay or the kickoff until well after the game was finished.

AL: We’re working with Koakane for the weekend wins payoff – it’ll be either at the Fresno State or Tulane T-Gate. November 19 or 26. Decision will be made a couple of weeks in advance.

Congratulations to the Wahine volleyball team again. Barring serious injuries, it doesn’t look as if the balance of the schedule will be any challenge until the playoffs.

I can’t speak to any of the other locations where the away T-Gates have been held this year since we were at a private home for the UW and UNLV games; however, there was certainly no pressure to spend a lot of money on food & beverages at Pinky’s. We ordered an artichoke/spinach dip with chips during the first half of the game, and, in the second half, split a dessert plus ordered one beer and two cups of coffee refilled several times during the entire game. I doubt seriously if we spent more than $20 including a tip.

Watching a game in a mall food court can be fun but it’s an entirely different experience sitting around a table in a much smaller environment. There was a baby with his family at a nearby table and several people in our group made sure that everyone got a high-five – including the baby – whenever something great happened – like the picksix or Tank’s run into the end zone for another TD.

  171. Not an Expert October 2, 2011 12:34 pm

Sideline analysis easier to do than coaching:

The oline not having any starters or maybe 1 from last year has done a credible job and will only get better. Sopolu genetics has been given the opportunity and did not disappoint

As for the receivers Pollard has stepped out tremendously. Clapp looks like a Salas in the making. The other receivers needs to step up more. Stutzman is good in catching the ball and needs to be tougher after the catch. Blocking needs to improve greatly. Bright doesn’t look so bright. Cannot get separation and blocking also is an issue besides catching the ball since he is usually in traffic. Is the turftoe a concern?

Running back is still in the works. Spurts of brilliance. Many times the blocking back is not in the proper position to help out. Why the sacks and Moniz having to scramble.

For the defense great job overall. Need improvement on wrapping up and being aggressive going to the ball. Too many arm tackling which does not bring the ball carrier down. When on the field you are not the spectator but the participant. I believe swarming to the ball carrier provides more positive than negative results.

Learning from a win and looking to improve the areas that needs to be improved on will make for a better chance on having a winning season. Continue to strive and best to all the players, coaches and support staff.

    ST & Tsaiko Blog Dogs:

Aaahhh…what a satisfying feeling, the day after a big win and on the road too! Agree with other blog dogs that Sapolu did a very credible job with no major hitches in his performance. Where was Bright? Seemed like Stutz, Clapp, and Pollard were the only ones playing. Iosefa’s break out game where he showed his stuff. Defensive line gave major push to hold LA Tech offense. O line also did a good job and special teams….Aaahhh, wotta feeling!

    http://www.rgj.com/videonetwork/1194712875001?odyssey=mod|tvideo|article

  181. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 2, 2011 2:54 pm

    Shoko #180

Are you saying “unreal” in a bad or good way?

I watched the video and liked everything I heard. Brutal honesty and no sugar coating.

Giving credit to Boise as being #4 in the nation but slamming his offense for not doing their job.

  182. Shoko October 2, 2011 3:05 pm

    IWWTHM,

Well, I just think that he lacks tact when dealing with the media. He comes of very abrasive. It’s no secret that he hates dealing with the media, especially after a loss. He also seems to deflect the blame to his coaches and players rather than himself. Coach Mack is not like that. In fact, I can’t think of any coach that would throw his staff and players under the bus like that.

  183. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 2, 2011 3:24 pm

    #182 Shoko,

Go on youtube and type in coach meltdowns or something. Mike Leach, Mike Gundy and Joe Paterno are good examples of how they tell it like it is. That’s just how some coaches are. I don’t think its wrong so long the problems are being addressed. 2 roads to the same destination.

  184. cocobean October 2, 2011 3:30 pm

Ault is the anti-Mack. Definitely not a player’s coach. Make a mistake in practice or a game and you’ll hear about it. He demands, not ask, for accountability. When you see how brusque he is with the press you can only imagine how profane he is in the locker room.

The thing is he’s been successful doing it his way. His teams won’t get beat because they weren’t focused, unprepared or lacked effort. He’s the kind of boss the most people don’t like to work for. The kind of boss where the bottom line is all that matters.

  185. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 2, 2011 3:33 pm

    #184,

Same with Leach. If not for his issue with Craig James’ son he would still be at TTech.

I wouldn’t say that either type of coach is better than the other. Some players respond well to positives while other players only respond when they hear the negatives.

In Hawaii’s case it seems we play a heck of a lot better when we are Pecked off and not given the respect by opponents, media, public.

    Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  188. Shoko October 2, 2011 3:47 pm

    IWWTHM,

In my humble opinion, if I was a Wolf Pack player it wouldn’t sit well with me if my coach – who I spill blood, sweat and tears – talk as if I didn’t give my all in a game. Sure they make mistakes, but Ault has two chips on his shoulder: One that says “I’m a Hall of Fame Coach” and the other that says, “I went 13-1 last season”.

Humility and compassion is key to success. Don’t dump on your players or assistant coaches for a loss. And thats exactly what Ault does on a regular basis. Ault’s vocabulary rarely involves the word ‘WE’.

  189. iwonderwhytheyhateme October 2, 2011 3:51 pm

    Shoko,

In my humble opinion if he was such a horrible coach to his players it would not pay dividends and he would not be where he is today. The name e-Bola rings a bell.

Coach Ault may not be the type of coach that is warm and fuzzy, but it fits his players, his staff, and most importantly UNR’s program.

I don’t see Ault getting the ax no matter how much their AD hates him.

    IWWTHM,

You can’t rule with an Iron Fist all the time. It affects the psyche with the players and assistant coaches.

As far as dividends, sure maybe last season, but that guy since his return hasn’t returned positive revenue in terms of expenses versus profit. It has always been in the negative and only exacerbated by the other non-revenue sports.

In a situation where the ref’s are unsure about the call etc. does the AD of the home team or conference commissioner have any say?

If Mack yanked the players off the field and refused to play a down of football, could he appeal to someone other than the officiating crew?

The Big East met and ESPN mentions some of the schools that their commissioner has been given the green light to target. Air Force being invited for all sports instead of football-only is new, but maybe because Air Force doesn’t have options for its nonrevenue sports if the MWC/WAC/WCC turned it down.

The presidents and chancellors of the 14 remaining Big East members and TCU have authorized commissioner John Marinatto to “aggressively pursue discussions” with certain schools interested in joining the league.

The source said a number of schools were discussed, including Navy, Army, Air Force, Temple, Central Florida and a new name in SMU, which would be a natural rival with TCU if the Horned Frogs honor the commitment to join the conference in 2012-13. All of these schools except Army and Navy would join the Big East for all sports.

    http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/7051020/presidents-chancellors-give-commissioner-ok-expand-big-east-conference

  216. Garret October 2, 2011 4:52 pm

The MWC’s commissioner says that the Big East and current MWC school TCU are talking with Air Force to try to get them to join the Big East. Can the Air Force really compete in the Big East in Basketball?

With rumors swirling about the Big East being interested in adding Air Force, Thompson is rooting for the Falcons to stay put.

“I know they’re getting tremendous calls and pressures from people in the Big East, from administrators in the Big East, TCU has reached out and said ‘Why don’t you look at this stuff?” Thompson said. “People have to make decisions. What I hope happens is that we stop, call a timeout, take a deep collective breath. Why rush into anything right now? We know for a fact that a couple of Big East schools have left. Is that the end of it? Is there more? Why jump into something right now?”

I don’t know if I like the idea of the service academies playing in the AQ conferences. Just doesn’t seem right.

  218. A-joe October 2, 2011 6:31 pm

I’ve always believed if someone is not happy and wants to leave, let um. It’s worse begging and pleading with them to stay.

If anyone wants to leave the MWC, by all means please go. I’d hate to have them playing in our house knowing they don’t wanna be here.

213: IWWTHM- LT’s AD had said he would bring up yesterday’s game officiating with WAC league officials. Thing is, Benson was at the game. He did nor could do nothing about the situation. The league itself is falling apart and losing credibility. I can’t foresee any meaningful judgment with bite to come down from the WAC office. A stern warning and a wag of the finger is the best Karl can do.

Suspension of the officiating crew? Please. The crew would just as soon go back to officiating D-II or local high school ball again then face any meaningless wrath from Benson.

But the officiating was just as bad as a Rick Perry debate; painfully confused and incompetent. Their public exposure was punishment enough.

  219. Pomai October 2, 2011 6:57 pm

IWWTHM – Ault is the AD, and he is a jerk from the get go. He suffers from the same thing your buddy neil does. IMHO he will be beside himself knowing he still has to play us, he has stated in the past he hates playing Hawaii either here or there.

He has no class, yeah you get down on your players but not in the press you do it in the locker room, and it’s just like Vegas, what happens in the locker room stays in the locker room.

It’s been a great weekend for sports.

    1) Wahine volleyball won 2 games in straight sets as expected.

    2. Wahine Soccer won their first 2 conference games against Utah St. and Nevada.

    3. Warriors blow out La Tech. How sweet.

    4. 49ers won on the road for the 2nd straight week. Things are looking up.

    5. Cowboys blew a big lead, again. I’m happy for Dominic Raiola from St. Louis HS/Lions center. I worked with his mom at a bank.

    6. UW beat Utah in Salt Lake City.

    7. Paul Johnson’s team is undefeated at 5-0.

    8. June Jones’ SMU beat TCU on the road.

    9. I really like Russell Wilson from Wisconsin who trashed Nebraka 48-17.

    10. Boise St. keep rolling along, even thought they couldn’t cover the spread.

    11. Looks like Alabama and LSU are on a collision course in early November.

    12. Farrington finally beats Kahuku. Good for Randall Okimoto and his program.

    13. Happy for Tank Hopkins and Richard Torres who returned fumble and interception for TDs yesterday.

    14. Ravens beat the Jets by making 3 defensive touchdowns. Ironically the Jets also made 2

also and it set an NFL record of 5 returned touchdowns in one game, including a 107 kickoff return by Joe McKnight of the Jets, formerly of USC.

Did you know, Tony Romo lost to UH, 61-36 when he was playing at Eastern Illinois on August 31, 2002. The winning UH quarterback in that game……none other than Timmy Chang. And that’s the way it was.

  234. Ralph October 2, 2011 8:48 pm

Ja Marcus Russell, Jason Campbell and Terrell Pryor, three quarterbacks not noted for their passing and they all part of Raider Legacy, someone cursed us! If Al Davis needed people to hold an umbrella or over head light for him they would be acceptable, but as quarterbacks, dang, they suck.

  235. madeinhawaii October 2, 2011 8:55 pm

Ralph.. gotta be fair though.. Ault was the Coach before he became AD and hired Toomey.. only to fire Toomey and become the Coach and resign as AD. I guess he felt that he could do more to help balance the books as a coach than as A.D.

    Great week for UH sports.

The Wahine SoccerBows victories were awesome! Coach Nagamine has everyone believing. The VolleyBows are putting it all together. The Warriors were FANtastic! And not that it matters, and I could be wrong, but I think Coach Mac says, “Get your hands off of me!” rather than “Don’t touch me!”.

  242. al October 2, 2011 10:22 pm

210…although i don’t know for sure, logic would have it that if he had pulled his team off the field he would risk the fact that he would put his team in jeopardy of losing the game by forfeiture.

don’t know if football has protest rule. in baseball, a team may ask for a protest. the head umpire then records the alleged protest of rule and then notes when the protest was filed with the inning, outs, balls n strikes, number of runners on base, score. the official scorekeeper then notes such as well who is at bat and the official lineup at that juncture. then, the game is played on as if nothing occurred.

if the protesting team wins, they would normally just drop the protest and take the win.

    football????

Interesting facts member Dr Jon at SportsHawaii:

Someone on the Bobby Curran Show said that Macmackin had never won a come from behind and that if UH is trailing by the end of the 1st quarter they had never won, so I decided to look it up myself. UH actually trailed Central Arkansas at the end of the first quarter but came back to win. This is the only exception. In fact in 46 games UH has lead at the end of the first quarter in 25 games, been tied in 6 games and been behind in 15 games.

In the 25 games where they were ahead they have won 22 and lost 3. But if you break it down by home and away. In 14 home games where they lead at the end of the first quarter they are 14-0. In the 11 road games where they lead at the end of the first quarter they are 8-3.

In the 15 games where they were behind at the end of the first quarter, they are 1-14. In 8 home games where they were behind at the end of the first quarter they are 1-7. In 7 away games where they were behind at the end of the first quarter, they are 0-7.

In the 6 games they were tied at the end of the first quarter they are 3-3. But in 3 home games where they were tied at the end of the first quarter they are 3-0 and in the 3 away games where they were tied at the end of the first quarter, they are 0-3.

Which means that when playing at home, if UH is ahead or tied at the end of the first quarter they are 17-0. If they are at home and behind at the end of the first quarter they are 1-7.

If UH is away and either behind or tied at the end of the first quarter they are 0-10. If UH is away and ahead at the end of the first quarter they are 8-3.

    Dr Jon

But wether win or lose WE Bleed green an will keep cheering for you guys an though they dont see it we do appreciate it!

Just wish fans would show Hawaii Program some love win lose or draw an just go support the home team! People have more pride in their high school teams then Hawai’i football now! They play for us guys remember that when they win WE WIN AS A STATE! The reason we aint a big name school is cause of the lack of support an most people will go for a winner so just keep winning wins will cure EVERYTHING!

An seriously if you want recruting to suffer, players to question to stay or go, another LEARNING CURVE just sign coach mac for 2 years an if you plan on getting someone else then wait through those 2 years but for now it doesnt help to do the waiting game DID THEY NOT LEARN FROM THE JUNE JONES INCIDENT!!! Didnt we just get some highly touted freshman quarterback if we lose Mac what happens with the assitants just keep Mac sign he’s done a FINE job except for consistent ending season loses but what is he 26-20 an didnt he have a better winning percentage after 3 season than June Jones? Just re-sign him right now an not let it linger anymore I hope Coach Mac them keep playing with a chip on their shoulder every year cause they need to in order to gain national media attention again!

Unless you wanna take a step back I suggest you re-sign Coach Mac!

    Go Warriors I Bleed Green

C’mon people lets start filling in the stadium an rocking the house!

Just asking. Can we do away with the “best guess WITHOUT GOING OVER” (sounds like Milton Bradley or Mattel type of rules rather than Tsaiko standards, if you ask me) and stick with the BEST GUESS period? If WarriorNY won, he was a total (+ or -) of 7 points off. Izzy was only 2 total points off. If he officially lost , he WAS robbed. He should be Champ! Jack Flash should be 2nd with only 3 total points off. I’d like to lobby for ‘izzy’. Like Coach Mack, I want a review of the review!

I had predicted last week that John Hardy-Tuliau will block and kick against LaTech and that just might be the difference in a tight game, 31-30. Well, Hardy-Tuliau blocked the extra point after LaTech’s first TD, but unfortunaly Tyler Hadden also missed an extra point after UHs first TD. Oh well, I was right 50% of the time.

The difference in the game was Torres’ int. and Hopkins returned fumble for TD on the ensuing kickoff. That broke the game open right there and gave UH the cushion it needed, 41-13 to stave off the Bulldogs who can be dangerous. There was still a lot of time left in the game so I was still leery. But, UH was able to kick a short field goal to give UH 3 score lead to make it a little more comfortable. As you know, winning on the road if not easy and you cannot take anything for granted. Remember, UH led Colorado 10-0 at halftime last year and ended up losing 31-13. You have to play the full 60 minutes. Two example yesterday, Detroid overcame a 24 pt. deficit to beat the Cowboys and the 49ers overcame a 20 pt. deficit to beat the Eagles. Even Texas A & M had a big lead at halftime and lost 42-38 to Arkansas in a great game. And, of course, Utah St. blew another game in the 4th quarter to BYU, a 3rd such game in which they lead by more than a touchdown beginning the 4th qtr. I watched them Utah St. several times already and they can move the ball and score. UH will have a tough time winning that game at home against them if we’re not careful. Utah St. wants some payback after they lost at home to UH 7-45 on homecoming day. It was a rainy day, but UH played probably their best game of year on that one.

Did you know, that UH beat Ben Roethlisberger and his Miami-Ohio Redhawks at Aloha Stdium. It was a great game and Roethlisberger was simply fantastic as a true freshman. I believe the finally score was 52-51 something like that. So we’ve beaten Roethlisberger and Romo. We also beat Ty Detmer, a Heisman Trophy winner. That was one of the best games in UH history, top 2 or 3 for sure. Not certain, but I think the UH QB that beat Roethlisberger was Rolovich, but I could be wrong on that one. Will have to look it up.

Bitter sweet though that this will be the last time in Ruston. It was something that we looked forward to going to every 2 years. But all in all, ALOHA to the Mighty Warriors as they continue this year! – Johnny “Da Warrior”!
