Rado Parapunov POW again, UH No. 1 in poll, 2 in RPI

Hawaii opposite hitter Rado Parapunov has been named player of the week four times in the last five weeks in the Big West. Photo by Steven Erler/Special to the Star-Advertiser.

Rado Parapunov earns his fourth player of week award in five weeks.
The 6-foot-9 junior opposite averaged 4.89 kills per set and hit .472 (44-10-72) in a 3-0 week for the Rainbow Warriors, who improved to 23-0 on the year. UH hasn’t lost a set all season long.
Parapunov notched 18 kills on .640 (18-2-25) hitting in the rematch against UC San Diego. He had 15 kills and a season-high six blocks against Concordia.
The native of Bulgaria turned in 11 kills and five blocks in the opening match against the Tritons. He had 12 blocks over nine sets for a 1.33 average.
Freshman of week to Punahou product Ryan Wilcox of UCSB

Top five places stay the same
1. Hawaii (16 votes). 2. Long Beach State. 3. UC Santa Barbara. 4. Pepperdine. 5. UCLA.
Moving up from 9 to 6 was USC.
As for the RPI, 1. Long Beach State. 2. Hawaii

Also today the SandBows (18-7) stayed at No. 6 in the Beach poll
The top 14 didn’t change. Thought the loss to Cal Poly might change things but the Mustangs losing to Long Beach State created a wash.
1. UCLA (all 33 votes). 2. USC. 3. Florida State. 4. LSU. 5. Pepperdine. 6. Hawaii. 7. Cal Poly. 8. Florida International. 9. Long Beach State. 10. Stetson.

“…down to No.2 in the RPI”? BOY, THE NCAA COMMITTEE IS REALLY RACKING THEIR BRAINS OUT, TRYING TO FIGURE HOW TO WRECK U.H. MEN’S VB.

    1. has nothing to do with NCAA committee. This is a computer-generated strength of schedule rating. Hawaii played UCSD twice, Tritons with an RPI of 25, and Concordia once, Eagles with an RPI of 23.
    It was going to drop.

There continues to be a lack of understanding on this blog about how RPI works.

Blog posters should not view RPI in the same way as the AVCA poll. The poll has a built-in bias that rewards weekly wins and punishes weekly losses, generally. In the poll, we would expect UH to remain #1 if they continue winning. But the RPI calculation, a team’s record is only 25% of the calculation, while the remaining 75% is based on who a team plays, and who a team’s opponents play.

The reason for UH’s RPI rank drop has to do with playing 3 matches whose opponents have losing records, while LBSU played a 14-8 UCI team twice. UH’s played teams with a cumulative 15-43 record (.259) versus LBSU playing 28-16 (.636). Because SOS forms 50% of the RPI, this opponent record disparity increased LBSU’s SOS relative to UH’s.

As an aside, UH leads LBSU in the other two components, team winning percentage and Opponents’ SOS, but by smaller margins that the SOS difference.

This sheet shows LBSU and UH’s raw scores for the 3 RPI components:

    2. My post #3 above was not directed at you, Cindy. Just seeing the same misunderstandings on RPI that have existed for the past few years. I just elaborated on what you posted above.

A couple of interesting items on RPI:

    1. Had LBSU lost one of its matches to UCI while UH remained undefeated last week, UH would have barely retained the #1 RPI ranking despite playing UCSD and Concordia-Irvine.

    2. Assuming both UH and LBSU win their matches this week, UH’s RPI rank will rise to #1 again. LBSU plays 5-15 UCSD twice, while UH plays 17-5 UCSB twice.

    Objective: RPI.
    Subjective: Paranoia

    What side are you on?

This is ridiculous. SPREAD the word and vote. We have LOTS of fans here in Hawaii who know how to use the internet. Joe, Rado and Stein were leading up until yesterday. They are well deserving of these awards but will lose them yet again if Hawai`i fans don’t get off their lazy you know what and vote. It’s such an easy thing to do.

SPREAD THE WORD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am. I think alot of the votes are from friends and family of mine.

Yeah….no reason to be alarmed. We will be playing LBSU the final two matches of the season. If we beat them, the RPI will take care of itself.

    You’re a diplomat.
    That’s a compliment.

I’m an ideologue, a paranoid one.

    5. no offense taken. I was just doing a simple summary comparing who UH played and who LBS played.
