Bear market for former UH football intern

Makana Garrigan, who has served on the UH football coaching staff the past three seasons, has joined Maine as a running backs coach.

Garrigan is reunited with assistant head coach Pat Denecke, who is the Black Bears’ run-game coordinator and offensive line coach. Denecke, Garrigan and UH head coach Nick Rolovich were on the Nevada staff four years ago.

“The weather is slightly different,” said Garrigan, noting tonight’s 12-degree temperature at the Orono campus. “Just a little different.”

Garrigan was a UH graduate assistant for defense for two seasons. Last season, he was an intern.

“As a coach, you’ve got to make the moves,” Garrigan said.

In addition to coaching the backs, Garrigan is assigned to recruit in Connecticut and Rhode Island.

The Black Bears compete in FCS.

Yeah, I checked the link about the 24 Warriors’ academic recognition. Nice. Was impressed with Makai Manuwai – Chemistry; Ta’aga Tu’ulima – Mechanical Engineering; Ilm Manning – Pre-Engineering. These are hard majors. And to do it while playing football…impressive.

most certainly agree with all posts who confirm its tough to be an “academician” while playing any sport in college — Kudos to all who made the list any all others who were close!!!

heck, it’s tough just to graduate in 4 years as a student only!!!

Great news about these student athletes! Amazing job guys!
Now if can get 50-60% of the team there…. This is what college football is all about!

Very impressive list. Good to see that kind of progress from the program. Part of the larger process. Terrific. Good luck to Coach Makana. I remember UH playing Maine once. A group of Maine University fans had dinner at a restaurant I was working at, they were so nice people. I wonder if Garrigan will have “one eye” on his recruiting assignment on Hawaii.

Boise State has now lost its DC, Andy Avalos to Oregon. Avalos will be earning $750,000. Earlier, BSU D-line coach Chad Kauhaahaa moved on to coach USC. Hope UH can keep their coaching staff intact for once. Fingers crossed.
