As mentioned previously, the players may sign an official NLI but coaches can’t talk about them until paperwork is received and processed.

I believe Hawaii will do one big release so that may be a few days for indoor women and men. See beach update at bottom

Signing with the indoor Wahine this morning at Dublin Coffman High (Ohio) was Riley Wagoner, 6-foot OH, recently named to the AVCA High School All-America second team.
Also signing at the Hawaii Convention Center this morning was Braelyn Akana, 6-foot OH, Kamehameha.

Others who had given their oral commits for indoor:
Amber Igiede 6-3 FR M Baton Rouge, LA St. Michael the Archangel

Canadian Anna Maidment
Hannemann’s and Maidment’s paperwork received and cleared. Hardisty received late, should be processed by morning.
Walking on are Ili’hia Huddleston, Hi’ilawe’s sister, El Camino

Laurie McGrath Hilo High
Hawaii had a commit from Maidment’s playing partner Erika Vermette but Vermette has decided to remain in Canada and play indoors.
For the Warriors, they are expected to sign two this week.

Jeez Louise, it sure makes one feel super old whenever the children of former Warriors and Wahine come to play for UH. Welcome to all!

  2. H-Man November 14, 2018 7:55 pm

Looks like all the sand commits have signed. Come on outdoor commits, Hanna, Tiffany and Amber, let’s see your pictures posted on this blog.

  3. H-Man November 14, 2018 7:57 pm

Sorry, looks like mistake “INDOOR” commits. Fax those NLIs.

  4. Kahuna November 14, 2018 8:30 pm

Amber signed already. They had a signing ceremony at Amber’s HS and her family’ was there to witness the signing. Maybe Cindy didn’t have time to look for it but it’s on her HS facebook page.

I know it’s only a picture but just by judging by the looks of Amber Igiede signing NLI with teammates, she looks like a determined “keeper”.
Riley Wagoner being named to the AVCA 2nd Team High School All-America is not too shabby also. That’s a pretty high achievement!!!
I can only sense Robyn and Angelica Co.
have been waiting for this 1st crack of their RECRUITS. They have both been there and done it. I feel they know the physical components to make a National Contender. Now, once all the recruits commit, it will be the coaches jobs to make these girls buy into the Hawaii-Style Volleyball Culture. I believe it will and can be done. Oh boy, I can’t wait a whole year…

  6. Bleachercoach November 15, 2018 1:15 am

Riley Wagoner is one of the top 48 players named to the 1st (24)or 2nd(24) top players in the country. Only Hawaii and UCSB from the Big West landed a Top 48 girl in the country.
Nebraska got 3 girls from the 1st Team AVCA “Under Armour Team”
Riley must be a super athlete to be on the 2nd Team AVCA “Under Armour Team”.
Can’t wait to see what she can do for Hawaii in 2019 thru 2022. (2023 if she RS one year )

Contemporary players transfer with such regularity, I think redshirting a potential star like Wagoner is dangerous.

Every year, for all sports, I cross my fingers that every player with remaining eligibility returns.

I root for Megan Huff at Utah, but her decision to transfer still stings a little.

  8. H-Man November 15, 2018 7:12 am

But Megan chose to play basketball and a program/conference that she felt could help her get to play professionally. Sorry, but Wahine basketball could not provide that for her. Wahine VB, on the other hand, is a different story.

  9. Hot November 15, 2018 8:21 am

    7. Not to be a Debbie Downer, but just a bit of reality check: McKenna Granato was a FIRST TEAM Under Armour All-American, and she isn’t exactly exhibiting super athlete abilities as a senior.

My understanding is that Wagoner is an OH2-type passer/hitter (think Kalei Greeley) who will complement a terminator-type OH1.

  10. H-Man November 15, 2018 9:47 am

Kahuna, thanks for update on Igiede. I wonder why Hawaii Athletics hasn’t posted an update on Wahine VB? They have for Basketball and Soccer.

  11. Bleachercoach November 15, 2018 9:54 am

8…Yes I know Megan Huff personally.
I wish she didn’t cross over to basketball although she is sensational there. I know Megan Huff, Nikki Taylor, Annie Mitchem, with Emily Maglio could probably taken us to the Final Four. Megan was an absolute awesome volleyball player. She just didn’t wait long enough or they didn’t give her the opportunity to play soon enough…btw, Megan is having an awesome Senior Year for the Utes BB team….She is one of the top players in the Pac 12

  12. Kahuna November 15, 2018 10:04 am

H-man…instead of dribbling out information in bits and pieces, they are probably waiting for all the girls to clear before announcing and post pics/comments. Would be embarrassing to talk about a recruit, then find out the one girl didn’t clear.

Robyn and her team have more important task at hand(matches today and tomorrow) so their focus is winning the matches. We get plenty of time to do this recruiting thing.

Keep in mind, this is a signing PERIOD and not only a signing day. We have another two weeks or so the find other prospects.

Natasha Burns announcing her intention not to return means we can go find someone else to fill her slot and there could be someone out there that may want to come and the coaches may take a look at them after Friday’s match.

  13. Kahuna November 15, 2018 10:23 am

#10….why would we feel down with Wagoner? A good OH2 would be just as valuable as having two OH1 type. Robyn would love to have a Kalei Greeley or a Riley Wagoner on this team. The abilty to pass the first ball the mark will allow UH to run their offense more efficiently and give the setters more options.

We currently have two pin hitters that are very good “in system” hitters in Granato and Gaskin. If we had Kalei or Riley on this team, :McKenna and Angel would put up much better numbers and so would our entire team.

Because we lack decent passers, we were forced to use Granato(who is really an average passer) in the passing rotation….thus taking her away from focusing on hitting and forcing her to pass.

We are just soooo lucky that Tita Akiu came. Without her, we would be a lousy team. It just shows you how important passing and ball control is in the game of volleyball.

Riley will provide steady passing and ball control. She will be a valuable member of the Wahine team and would not be surprised if she starts from day 1.

No downer here regarding Riley Wagoner. I’m actually excited to see her.

  14. AdmrVT November 15, 2018 10:28 am

    #13: Plus 2 = 3 more scholarships open.

#10: Don’t sell RW short & underestimate her potential. The accolades they have achieved thus far identify her as a top recruit but do not define her.

  15. Warriorfan November 15, 2018 11:05 am

The signing period goes on till august 1st.
No more fall and spring signing period for volleyball , it’s just one huge period from november through august.

  16. kahuna November 15, 2018 11:46 am

#16..are you sure you are correct? This is the volleyball early signing period and will only last for two weeks.

One huge signing period from November to August sound ludicrous. Why would the NCAA allow volleyballers to have such a long recruiting periods while other sports have limits on went they can recruit and stuff.

You must have mistaken August 1 from Dec 1. If I remember reading correctly. this early signing period started November 14th so two weeks would make it Dec 1 not August 1.

  17. kahuna November 15, 2018 11:52 am

#16…Never mind…you right..LOL Just went to look it up and you are right. Sounds kind of weird to allow volleyballers to recruit year round. I guess its a minor sports and they don’t need split signing period.

  18. Crazy4WVB November 15, 2018 12:33 pm

I wouldn’t expect to see more signings after the 5 they just got. Five freshmen is a lot for one class when you only have 12 to give. I would hope that maybe a transfer or two around April or May 2019 to fill the team. Unless of course a top 10 recruit is available lol

  19. H-Man November 15, 2018 1:48 pm

Kahuna, yes, the coaching staff is busy, but the athletic department has a Media Relations staff (Director + 2) and a separate Digital Media staff (Dir + 1). I believe they’re equivalent to a Public Relations function and are the ones responsible for coordinating, preparing and releasing information including recruiting status.

    12.

I just watched Huff play online against Alabama.

I watch with awe every time she plays.

I was happy for her when she made First Team All-Pac 12.

I was in Laie when Hawaii played a neutral court game on the BYUH campus against Texas A & M.

I have a theory that game was a contributing factor to her transferring.

She was a good volleyball player, too.

    She made the right decision.

  22. Hot November 15, 2018 4:49 pm

14 & 15. Not selling Wagoner short. Just reacting to the “super athlete” comment by No. 7.

Agreed that Greeley was very solid when she was healthy and UH would be lucky if Wagoner turns out like her. But they still need a terminator to have any chance of going far in the postseason.

  23. Kahuna November 15, 2018 5:38 pm

This is a team game. Everybody on the court will have a role and each role is just as important as the others. Without a good pass a terminator will not have a good set to hit and the setter does not have many options.

Riley will play a pivotal role on the team.

Having terminators on the team does not always equal wins. Look at us this year. We don’t have a true terminator but we are 10-2; in conference. LBSU have Arizona transfer Taylor Spriggs and Nebraska transfer Kashauna Williams, yet they have a record under .500 in conference because they suck at passing.

UCSB Lindsay Ruddin is the premier terminator in the conference. How good is UCSB??

I want a well rounded team. A well rounded team do the little stuff well. Passing falls under the category of “little stuff” to some.

“If you win the pass and serve game, you will win a lot of matches”…that is the quote I hear from the volleyball commentators all the time.

    new thread up for Thursday.
As mentioned in the original post, I believe Hawaii is waiting on all to sign before the release goes out.
This has nothing to do with Media Relations. First the NLIs have to be cleared through compliance.
As for Granato, she is one of 20 Wahine every to reach 1,000 kills.
