Warrior Beat: Warriors return to practice

After a four-day break, the Warriors resumed practicing this evening.
The Warriors, who have a bye this weekend, began the 90-minute workout in late afternoon and ended under the lights at the Ching Athletic Complex.
The drills were light contact, although they probably will intensify for Friday’s practice.
“I’m refreshed,” slotback John Ursua said. “It feels good to be able to have a bye and take my mind off a little bit and refocus what our goal is now as a team and show what we are, how we can bounce back from this.”
After a 6-1 start, the Warriors have lost four in a row. They need one more victory to ensure a winning 13-game regular season and earn the accompanying berth in the Hawaii Bowl.

I remember when UH drew 43,000 for a game with Abilene Christian back in the 80s. Sports is not interesting for the general population.
I wonder if had “choke” complaints about Aloha Stadium and the traffic at the concert or if anyone decided to turn around and go home?
The crowd was crazy at the concert last night. To see that many people in the stands brought back memories of old for UH football. So sad nowadays. Even had the wave going around. Was more like a tidal wave with that much people.
Also was cool to see Bruno and his crew sporting the UH rainbow attire the entire show.
Hope UH is recruiting very hard right now. They will need all the help next year.
Traffic. Workers were let go early from work so they would not be caught up in stadium traffic. Nice. And great to read that Bruno Mars wore UH Rainbow attire to show his support for the program. Four days off. Rest good for body and mind. For players and hoping maybe some coaches had some time off at the beach.
Yep, we have fallen a long way from the golden days.
My best memory ever of football at Aloha Stadium as a spectator and not playing, was the 1977 prep bowl, the ultimate town v. country, public v. private school battle. If I’m not mistaken, the crowd was about 30,000 and we employed the old Halawa Housing VIP pass, which usually meant jumping a wall, but on this occasion, we got a gate opened from one Halawa boy, Art Smith, who played at UH and later for the Raiders.
And some all-time prep greats were on the field that night: Daryl Gabriel, John Kamana, Willie Kamakana, Frances Sequeira Mark Tuinei, James Holt, Nathan Fletcher….
The highlight of the evening was a very Jack Tatum-esque almost beheading of John Boy Kamana by Nathan Fletcher, where a collective hush and then ohhhhhhh, took over the crowd—too classic. Plus, for all us raggedy Halawa types all those pretty private school girls made for a classic fall evening in the islands….
The Warriors needed this break. Between travel and no byes, a lot was asked of them. Looking forward to these last games!
Happy hunting to our mainland recruiters. Bring back some lively ones.

Shore down the UH football program already. A perfect time would be when/if the current Aloha Stadium needs to be demolished and the new Stadiuk build (which, by Hawaii standards, should take 3-5 years; perfect time for the program to clear its mind and figure out just what the heck they want for the next 100 years). Go to a lower division, have a great budget for it, the revolving door head coach aituation will be assumed.
And U.of Hawaii football will be much better off for it.
Part of sports is to have courage. I’ve never seen ANY of your posts mention that word, Bool. You sure YOU played the game?
You sort of silly CG, because if you actually knew anything granular about this, is the basic fact that without D1 football you cannot support the bulk of the other sports. There is a rather simple calculus that is tethered and cornered in the requirements of title IX that mandate about 44-45 percent of the scholarship spots be dedicated to women’s/non revenue sports—this is in relation to the total male scholarships a school awards. Thus, if it is not already painfully obvious, if you eliminate the higher number, e.g. the D1 football scholarships, the mathematical corollary is that you also reduce those spots that are slated for women’s and non-revenue sports. Not brain surgery my friend….
And at least I have memories, ones in which I was actually on the field, both in HS and college….what about you, working the saimin stand maybe?

Old Halawa Housing VIP Pass… An exercise (drill) I often ran returning home from school. Darren Benitez was one o.g. on dem rights of passage, back then it was “mano a mano” as CCTV wasn’t a threat. Da stories ones feet could tell. Just like sports, I took the off da rock approach to live my dream as a LEO. Outta da GSH(gov.sub.hou.)but still housing boi @ heart. Though HPD of UHFB ain’t the same…. hmm “Ieova ile tatou va” go warriahs.

DPK, I must admit to all, for reasons of both transparency and well, I want to unburden myself with the secret I have carried for too long, is that we both shared a locker at the old Glades as we were apprentice understudies for Prince Hanalei back in our glory (aheeeem) days. Gosh, it feels good to finally share that….
Nobody will support a FCS program.
That is a non-starter.
Schools such as North Dakota State, Sam Houston State, and Eastern Washington would outrecruit Hawaii.

Two things…..”once in a lifetime” event like Bruno Mars concert, you willing to put up with a lot. It’s like going to Disneyland where you wouldn’t mind waiting an hour for a 30 second ride. Most sane people wouldn’t stand in line for anything
Secondly……the younger crowd are more patient than the older folk. Older folks have place to go and things to do. Younger kids can stand in line and chat the hour away with no regrets.
That said….going to UH games still sucks. Spend hour there and the team lose the game. Those attending the concert know they will leave with a smile on their faces at the end of the event.

chicken grease, you are an idiot. unless you’re saying that UH should drop to division II, which would affect EVERY sport, including historically successful sports like women’s volleyball, and would basically kill recruiting and athletic department revenue across the board, then please shut up and stop trying to antagonize boolakanaka because it’s clear you have no idea what you’re talking about.

Well, I mean, nobody wants to watch boring losing football. Generally, even when June Jones teams lost, it was still fun and exciting to watch.

okay. cool! let’s do that. I nominate chicken grease to walk into the locker room after the season is done and tell everyone in there that the program is cut and everyone in the room better start pulling some massive amounts of student loans because they all lost their scholarships. Chicken Grease, you can start with John Ursua and the next person up can be one of the last scholarship players on the bench who works his tail off every day at practice and the offseason to be a part of the team and attend the university and spends thousands of hours every day training and practicing hard for the team even though he may never even see the playing field.
