Warrior Beat: Expansion football

With eight games in the books and five more remaining in the regular season, the Warriors are seeking to make use of a new redshirt rule to expand the active roster. The amendment allows a player to appear in up to four games and still count this as a redshirt season.

“We’re going to see some guys who really aren’t freshmen anymore,” head coach Nick Rolovich said. “We want to see if there’s anyone who can help us, especially on special teams, and have a role on defense.”

Expanding the active roster is useful for home games, where there is no limit to the number of players who may suit up. The league restricts travel rosters to 70 players. The Warriors play host to Nevada on Saturday at Aloha Stadium.

“We’ve got some good young guys who been in the program for a few months now,” Rolovich said. “We’re going to see if any more can help us.”

Here are some prospects, with the number of games they have played this season:

Quarterbacks — Chevan Cordeiro (1), Jeremy Moussa (0).

Receivers — Robert Funkhouser (0), James Green (0), Kahale Huddleston (0), Nick Mardner (0), Eric Rooks (1).

Offensive linemen — Alex Dalpe (0), Ernest Moore (0), Gene Pryor (1).

Defensive ends — Jonah Kahahawai-Welch (0), Jonah Laulu (2), Zach Ritner (0).

Defensive tackles — Foi Shaw (0), Justus Tavai (0).

Linebacker — Andrew Choi (0).

Defensive backs — Tony Cabral (0), Kai Kaneshiro (1), Alaka‘i Mashima (2), Dylan Toilolo (0).

The 2019 Warrior Volleyball season is less than 3 months away!
    From Coach Charlie Wade:
“The 2019 UH Men’s Volleyball Team is readying for a shot at the National Title. Coach Wade is preparing the squad with a scrimmage with Nittaidai University in Japan in November.

2019 tournament teams include Pepperdine, USC and BYU. Please consider supporting our boys by joining the UHMVB Boosters. They (the boys) are always appreciative.”

This is the best and easiest way to get to know the coaches and players. Participate in post-game potlucks, host a post-game meal, attend pregame “chalk talks” given by the coaches, help in coordinating/planning for various functions.

Kekaha Boy: Thanks for the YouTube link to Stepteau and Co.’s rap video. Brandon Thomas has a good voice for rap.
By the way, do you pronounce Kekaha, “KeKAha?” Or “KekaHA?” Just asking for a friend.

Aloha everybody ~ WAHOO!!! It almost Saturday and time for FOOTBALL and a ‘FRY-‘GATE.
You read that right –frygate–. Homey and J(J) are bringing dueling woks to ***CABANA A*** to fry up whatever grindz you want to bring. The normal routine will be the same: early crew at 9ish, grills/woks on fire about 10:30, talk story / eat ono fried grindz until clean-up around 4:30. Donations to pay for the Cabana, pop-up tent and common items are always appreciated. Remember, everybody is welcome. Questions – email me at jboster(at)yahoo(dot)com. Hope to see everybody there. GO BOWS! Cheers, SB

Khoury Bethley, #13, will be a stud for us in the future. I enjoy watching him on special teams. He, along with Manase Time, #25, both play angry. Bethley has also seen action on defense. I believe both players have played in more that four games.

#5 NotNasti you’re welcome! as for your Kekaha question….I’ve heard both versions pronounced, but the latter is what I am used to hearing or pronouncing growing up there in West Kaua’i.

As young as our team is, it’s good to get game reps to some of those red shirts. It will come in the toughest part of our season and give us a good look at what who have down the road.

Good luck to all the Warriors – regulars, red shirts, and scouts. Work hard, be excellent.

I love the way guys who were originally non-scholies have become studs for us. It speaks to our coaches and culture as a team.

In other news….UH out performed 800 other universities with a football program…in terms of revenue. Operating profit of $8.9 mil…? Last year revenues were….$11.8 mil!

Where is Rolo’s BYU show at????? Can’t find it, whats up no show when we lose????

  15. cappie the dog October 18, 2018 7:13 pm

Islandman…Well, I’ll still attend the games. I feel awful for Coach Beeman. I want her to succeed.

How many six-foot-plus post-players pan out anyway?

Kamilah Jackson was under six feet.

I liked Rebecca Dew because she was an English major.

The Delaware transfer had no recognizable skill set.

The last functional six foot center to play for Hawaii was Christen Roper.

It’s hard to fault homesickness; it hurts less that she’s going home rather than transfer to another D1 school.

Look at the softball team: Justin Smethurst, Brooke Wilkins, and Rachel Lack.

Didn’t Coach Coolen allow Kaia Parnaby’s sister on the team to bring a little bit of Australia to the islands?

Again, I hope I am wrong, but I think it is going to be a brutal season.

Julissa Tago has to wake up every morning and yell, “I am Tago!”

After her first two games last season, I thought she was going to be the team’s leading scorer.

    She is the key.

burro sabio: I highly recommend “Season of Glass”. It was her first album after John Lennon’s death. I collect Yoko Ono albums because I am a Beatles completist.

  17. Savich October 18, 2018 8:21 pm

Actually they got a shot. As long as they don’t play “dance with me.” She got to be treated well. She make rich, she make you sick. Just kick some butt.

Cappie, thanks but no thanks, my long furry ears can’t handle her voice.

  19. Whats up October 18, 2018 11:11 pm

    Islandman,

Yep my mistake I fixed is below and added where to watch it, for those that are unable to attend in person.

Nevada at Aloha Stadium *Home Game on Spectrum Sports
Fresno State at Bull Dog Stadium (Homecoming Game) *Road Game on ESPN 2
Utah State at Aloha Stadium *Home Game on Spectrum Sports
UNLV at Aloha Stadium *Home Game on Spectrum Sports
SDSU at Aloha Stadium *Road Game on ESPN

Last 5 games of teams that will probably be favorites to beat Hawaii, except maybe UNLV.

But on the bright side, 2 road games at Fresno and 3 games at home in Aloha Stadium.
Anytime Hawaii plays at Aloha Stadium (Home) the Warriors level of intensity, pride and swag increases.

    Go Warriors of Hawaii

  20. Whats up October 18, 2018 11:31 pm

And Hawaii does have a late in the season BYE Week on Nov 10th, just before the UNLV game Aloha Stadium. That Bye week is huge to give the Warriors much needed rest and practice time to work on schemes and techniques.

Probably not a bad idea to get some of the younger Warriors some game experience in the last 3 home games of the regular season. Build depth.

    Go Warriors of Hawaii

Has made all 558 snaps in the 8 games.

Has a near perfect GPA, majoring in Engineering.

(I will be looking for his name in the All American Academic Team.)
