Hawaii defeats Long Beach State in 4
Junior setter-hitter Norene Iosia had her fourth triple-double of the season, her second straight, and senior opposite Angel Gaskin added 12 kills as Hawaii defeated Long Beach State for the fourth straight meeting, topping the 49ers 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20 in a Big West volleyball match tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Iosia had 26 assists, 12 kills and 10 digs for Hawaii (10-6, 6-1). Senior middle Sarah Liva added 11 kills and senior libero Tita Akiu had 16 digs, her 15th match in double digits, for Hawaii (10-6, 6-1).
Senior hitter Tyler Spriggs had 18 kills for Long Beach State (11-9, 3-4). The 49ers outblocked the Wahine 11-7 with senior middle Emma Kirst in on six.
Long Beach State also had the edge in digs, 66-61. Junior hitter Hailey Harward had a match-high 20 digs.

8:54: Long Beach challenging a touch off the block. Don’t think so but I could be wrong. Looked like Williams hit the tape and it went out. If it is not overturned, Hawaii would be up 11-9.
8:40: for the first time since 2015, Beach takes a set. 49ers win it 25-23. Iosia called for the set, no surprise she was blocked.
835: It was a 7-0 run that put the 49ers up 15-12. Hawaii tied at 17 then went up 19-18. 49ers not going away. Liva blocked. Beach up 21-19. TO UH

736: 49ers set wide, should have been called a lift, wasn’t. Anyway, Hawaii up 24-22. TO Beach
733: so weird. ball hits the hair bun of Tyler Spriggs. it is an ace. there should be no discussion. That is a touch. Up ref overturns it.

I thought we had a more balanced offense in set 4, and of course a few breaks down the stretch helped. Good win.
Good to see Gong be the serving specialist. Need to get ready to next year. Probably Okino to libero and Gong to Defensive specialist. Tita is definitely setting the bar for future Libero’s. She is the best of all Hawaii past libero’s in my opinion.
Akiu has my vote for All American. Imo, the gears are still not quite clicking even if they came away with a W. Coach will need a strong recruiting class next year. Okino will need to take her game to the next level in future. Blunt assessment, culture must change sooner rather than later.
13. the culture has been changing. They have a pretty good class coming in. They will be young but a talented young. Most players had committed by the time Ah Mow-Santos started recruiting so I’d cut her some slack.

Granato:3 more service errors and hitting close to .000. Passing horrible as usual. She needs to be replaced her n back row.
Granato is not quick enough to play the back row. Plus, too shanks/overpasses on serve receive.

Wahine struggled to overcome #125? No surprise attacking variations hidden under sleeves to stop bleeding in latter part of 3rd set and gave up like #70? Too many weak settings to Granato who should receive ONLY high loop sets where she can elevate and pound it. Avoid making Granato to tip shot which rarely finds the floor. Settings should be tailored to suit the each type of hitter to raise the % KILL of hitter. Other hitters did a good job particularly, Liva & Angel! Good even set distribution!

14 . Agree with your assessment. Next year is Coach Robyn’s and staff 1st recruit class. She had to add the transfers to add from the departure from Coach Hall’s/Shoji’s departed recruits. The 3 transfers (1 and out) has been huge contributors.
From my observations, next year will be the start to the rise of what I predict will be very very promising years ahead for Wahine Volleyball. They have some heavy ‘Guns’ coming in from all over the world. The “Culture” is being set, now its time to roll in the ‘Factory’…
16/17/18–you noticed 19/20–think setting woes is having 2 different setters. I like Faith , but sometimes she gets TOO CUTE! Are setters looking across the net (?)–opp teamblockers are just waiting (offense tends to get predictable)! As for Granato , I remember coach Dave repeatedly saying that when shes back row, she plants and doesn’t move her legs (does anyone count how many times she is diving for balls)? Think Okino can play , but question mark , as a starter. Think Gong should get more playing time , to develop. Also , maybe give Kamalei , Trinity and Sibley more playing time (at OH) Just making suggestions , ’cause there really is nothing to lose (all depends on Wahine crushing Poly in 3) and winning out. With present RPI , don’t think they have a chance. Well , HOPE and play well , WAHINE—-GO BOWS
16/17/18/22…that problem existed from day 1, years ago…Fans and bloggers (probably everyone in the volleyball circle) can probably see that digging/passing is her biggest weakness that has improved a little. There still must be a reason why she has to stay in where you could sub someone in (substitution limitations?)
Obviously, she appears to have athletic limitations in jumping (elevating) and moving around but she has always seems to lead us in kills most of the time with but with a low efficiency/hitting pct. (Amount of Attempts/ Kills/Errors) At the end, She is trying her best to do her best!! She has been rewarded being named Big West 1st Team in 2017.
Wahine’s best power hitter, Granato brings a hidden strength as she draws attention of best defenders towards her. That is why even distribution raised overall team % kills. For the same reason, over-loading Granato, brings the team down too. Balance distribution is vital in every single game. As Granato has enough power to get the points off defenders’ side of body & block (& hair) and can minimize hitting long in open space. Keep pounding (instead of slowing down) even after a streak of hitting errors. Wahines can upset Poly ONLY with a fair contribution (>10 kills/30 TA) from Granato’s power hitting. Show off power hitting stats today…
Regarding recruiting, we do hear some criticisms, and at times even innuendos about how things are shaping up. Coach is obviously rebuilding, and imho, doing a very credible, earnest job and fair to everyone. So, imo, a good measure of any team’s progress and character is the attitude of the team, how supportive they are of each other, how they accept their roles and responsibilities.
Optimistic for the future and looking forward to the Big West title and earning post season.

You said recruiting was almost done when Robyn was hired as HC. Are you saying the class of incoming recruits for next season are Dave’s???
Recruiting for 2017 and 2018 was done. Her first recruiting class is really 2019 and on paper looks like the best we’ve had in a while. There are commitments from 4 known players and 2 unnamed foreign.

26. Players cannot officially commit until their senior year so HS Class of 2019 are incoming Class of 2019.
