After 20 practices, the Warriors broke training camp this morning.

The Warriors will enter their regular practice schedule on Monday, the first day of UH’s fall semester. The roster is permitted to expand at that time. The Warriors depart Wednesday evening to Denver in advance of next Saturday’s season opener against Colorado State.

For the second day in a row, the Warriors practiced in their game-day black helmets. The decals will be added next week.

As reported in your favorite newspaper today, kicker Kekoa Sasaoka has left the Warriors and is heading back to junior college.

What JC is headed to ? My next door neighbor and friend from small kid time was a 3 year starter at CSU—part of prep lore trival—who was it? None other than one of the most dominating Monarchs…Todd Schmidt! Played in the era of the great nose guards, (Niko, Al, Tavita..) and he was right up there with them!

  4. H-Man August 18, 2018 1:56 pm

Okay, so is Rolo ready to name his QB starter? I have a feeling it won’t be till game time that we’ll find out.

    One more week!

    Go get ’em Warriors!

A walk-on player has to be in residence for 1 yr now to be able to be awarded a scholarship and it is not counted under the 25 annual limit Previously it was 2 years.

    David McCracken:

Rolo believes that his three quarterbacks — Cole McDonald, Chevan Cordeiro and Jeremy Moussa — are each capable of winning football games this season.

And that it’s a possibility that all three quarterbacks will see game time this upcoming season.

“I think we could win some football games with Cole, with Chevan and to be honest, with Moussa, too,” Rolovich said after the team’s final training camp practice. “Moussa’s got, probably the most talented arm.

Cole and Chevan are better athletes, but I think there will be multiple quarterbacks playing this year. I can see that happening. You always got to be prepared for that because of injury.”

    Howzit Tsaikos!

The last time UH opened the season with a conference game was 1994! (vs BYWho).
    Looking forward to the season.

    GO WARRIORS!
    GO WAHINE!

I am still not a robot.

  9. Bowwar August 18, 2018 3:25 pm

I think it’s a BIG failure for Rolovich & staff not settling on a QB starter with only 7 days before the opening game…It also shows that none of the QBs have set themselves apart from the others. I hope this not indicative of a bad season…Sigh!

  10. Luki August 18, 2018 3:29 pm

Keep CSU guessing, no need name starter yet

Failure? Really? Indication of a bad season? Really? Sigh.

  13. H-Man August 18, 2018 5:33 pm

If Chevan is everything that has been written about him, then we should be okay (as I step up to drink the Kook Aid). But I still feel, in my gut, that a freshman QB that took his first D1 snaps THIS summer is really not ready for the bright lights. Even Tua at Alabama joined the Tide in the spring of his freshman year to get a jump on his D1 adjustment. From a logical standpoint, I would go with Cole McDonald who is now in his third season as a red-shirt sophomore. If he isn’t ready by now, he never will be.

  14. kalua pig August 18, 2018 6:03 pm

cole will be the starter.you already know cuz.

  15. HawaiiMongoose August 18, 2018 6:37 pm

My prediction: Cole will start. If UH is ahead or close at halftime he’ll stay in the game. If UH is trailing by multiple scores and the offense is sputtering then Chevan or Jeremy will start the second half.

  16. Boolakanaka August 18, 2018 6:37 pm

Watched the Bears/Broncos game, Dejon Allen played the majority of the 2nd half at guard and was very solid.

  17. islandman August 18, 2018 6:52 pm

I watched a few minutes and saw a Bronco player with “Garcia-Williams” on his jersey.
Allen is listed on one depth chart as 4th at RG.

Which team had the overall season #1 passing, total offense and scoring offense last year in the MW ?
Answer: Colorado St. ( No Run N Shoot for them).

  22. burro sabio August 18, 2018 8:02 pm

Who said the coaches haven’t chosen the opening game starting QB?

  23. dreamcitymike August 18, 2018 9:04 pm

No worries in naming a qb yet …coaches are on it, no rush just get it right! All 3 are talented & have something to contribute…we’re in a good place…go warriors, geev’um come game time!!

  24. dreamcitymike August 18, 2018 9:15 pm

No worries on naming a qb at this time, coaches got it… they’re on it! All 3 have the skill set to contribute! Shock the world in the MWC come Sat.

  25. Maddog50 August 19, 2018 2:18 am

Dejon Allen and Jerrol Garcia-Williams both played well albeit that it was 2s and 3s. Both have a chance. JGW got pt last year mostly on ST. Those depth charts vary greatly and some are dated CBS sports had D Allen as #2 LT. He has not played that position in pre-season. Hi best shot appears to be practice squad-NFL teams only carry 9 OL the bears have at least 15 on preseason roster-

  26. Paniolo August 19, 2018 6:45 am

I really believe since Warrior head coach Nick Rolovich has resurrected the “RUN AND SHOOT” offense, he will go with the quarterback who was literally born with that offense – Chevan Cordeiro. I can’t think of any freshman quarterback locally or on mainland College football schools was ever successful in their first year. So I might be wrong about the starting quarterback.

  27. Maddog50 August 19, 2018 7:38 am

So it begins. Wait all year long for this. Will be severely disappointed if the Warriors aren’t amped up hair on fire ready to give CSU some of what we ate at their expense last year. No reason no excuse not to come out physical and stay that way all 4 quarters-I do know one thing this staff is a major upgrade as far as assessment coaching teaching and prep-now it’s leadership and grit by those on the field. Optimistic-go Warriors!!$

  28. boolakanaka August 19, 2018 7:49 am

#24 Paniolo….more than a few: One, and I have actual memories as we played them—Jamelle Holloway in 1985 (UOKL), Dan Marino (PITT), Rick Leach (Michigan), Terrelle Pryor (OSU), Peyton Manning (TENN), Matt Barkley (USC)…..etc….

  29. islandman August 19, 2018 7:58 am

    24.
“…. It is going to be a little more difficult than in the old days. Back when June was here not everyone was running four receivers, so what you’ll see now is defenses a lot more familiar with the formations and defenses a lot more well prepared for the route adjustments than 15 years ago. ”
    (Ron Lee in today’s paper).

  30. oneseason August 19, 2018 8:01 am

Less than one week until the Colorado State game. It would be nice if CSU got overconfident. With UH’s 0-4 record since 2000, and it being a home game for them, they might just do that; UH-CSU: 21-51 (2017, Home), 22-49 (2014, Away), 28-35 (2013, Home), 27-42 (2012, Away).

  31. boolakanaka August 19, 2018 8:14 am

Potentially good news for Trayvon Henderson, Bengals released their starting safety of the last 4 years, George Iloka, this weekend.

  32. Whats up August 19, 2018 8:54 am

If Rolo is going with a pure RnS offense then 6’3″ 210lbs QB Jeremy Moussa would probably be the starter from day one, with that a big live arm. Moussa has been with the Warriors since spring and has a little more time learning the playbook and working with the team than Chevan.

But since Rolo is favoring a combo offense of RPO and RnS, that favors Cole and Chevan due to the athletic needs to get the defense to believe that the QB will actually be a threat to run at any given moment. Not saying that Moussa doesn’t have mobility because he does, even Tom Brady will take off and slide when he has no other choice but to run.

Bottom line, I expect Cole McDonald to start the Colorado State game and with a pretty new O-line he will have to use his legs and experience to keep plays alive and keep himself upright.

Early this season, I expect the offense to struggle and lean on the defense to keep Hawaii in games. And the Hawaii defense will eventually tire out from being on the field way too much in games. Once the QB situation is settled and the O-line has time to gel, the WR’s get on the same page as the eventual starting QB. The Hawaii Offense will come alive and not leave the Hawaii Defense hanging out to dry.

Barring any major injuries, I expect the offense and defense to be firing on all cylinders by the San Jose State game. By the SJSU game we should know how good this seasons team will be and give us glimpse of what to expect in 2019 as well.
