Must’ve been Pittsburgh who pulled out. Coastal Carolina posted their schedule and had both Utah and Pittsburgh in the Hawaii tournament but Utah confirmed they weren’t coming back this season. Not sure that Coastal Carolina and Oregon can be in a tournament together based on availability. CC is only free the 2nd weekend and Oregon is free the 4th weekend.

Yay for Jennifer Carey. One of my favorite Wahine setters as well as Caley Thurlby. Looks like Cal will perhaps start a Hawai`i pipeline with 3 Hawai`i connections there.

  3. rabbit ears May 22, 2018 2:20 pm

So where are the indoor recruits???

  4. aaaaa May 23, 2018 10:32 am

Any truth the rumor that Leka Kiner-Falefa transferred to UH?

  5. Cindy Luis May 23, 2018 7:05 pm

    4. yes, she is transferring but paperwork hasn’t been cleared. Not sure if she has to sit out. She played at North Texas in 16 and UNLV in 17.

  6. Cindy Luis May 23, 2018 7:07 pm

    1. don’t know who it was that pulled out. they’re still working on that third tournament.

  7. Cindy Luis May 23, 2018 7:22 pm

    3.
As for recruits, transfers are Angel Gaskin (Sr. 6-1, Opp), Tita Akiu (Sr. 5-2, L) Leka Kiner-Falefa (5-8, DS) and Sarah Liva (Sr. 6-1 MB). The latter two haven’t been made official with paperwork pending.
Signing in Nov. was incoming freshman Trinity Castaneda, 6-1, OH

  8. Kahuna May 23, 2018 8:08 pm

I’m not sure but somebody whom I trust said that Leka might have to sit out one year due to being a double transfer in D1. Going from D1 to JC then back to D1 would allow her to play. If she was a graduate student and a double D1 transfer, she would be OK.

Leka have a redshirt year available so maybe it is in her best interest to RS, then have two years to start after Reyn Akiu graduate.

BTW….is Kamalei Krug still walking on???

  9. Brandon May 23, 2018 11:02 pm

Gaskin and Tita will start. As well as Granato and iosia. After that, it’s a guessing game imo.

    Imo the best lineup is
    OH- Granato and Castillo
    opp- Gaskin
    MB- Burns and Williams
    Setter- Iosia
    Libero- Tita

I think this lineup can win the big west. It’ll be challenging but I know they can do it. Poly will be tough but beatable.

  10. kahuna May 24, 2018 12:45 pm

Hopefully this coming season, we will be a more pin to pin hitting team. Last year, we did not have a true OPP so Maglio and whoever was the other MB were counted on the be more offensive. With Granato at one LS and a true OPP in Angel Gaskin, Norene should be able to spread the sets out more and give the opponents more offensive weapons to watch out for. If Casey can improve to a point where she can terminate at a more consistent level, we will be tough to stop.

Without Magiio, our MBs are young and somewhat lack offensive firepower.

  11. ruffles May 24, 2018 2:01 pm

hopefully not pau adding players (or a player) yet, one more Div 1 ready transfer OH, should make Wahine very competitive, while giving youngsters chance to develop. Anybody heard any rumors?

  12. rabbit ears May 24, 2018 3:42 pm

Waiting for the european and canadian pipelines

  13. kahuna May 24, 2018 4:48 pm

I do wonder if UNC transfer Taylor Borup will be a Wahine. She is good friend with fomer UNC indoor VB Julia Scoles, who signed on with the Sandbows.

Borup have yet to announce which school she will transfer too. There is always a possibility that she could end up here. Don’t know what the chances are but as long as she haven’t announced where she will go, there is always hope.

She is 6-4 and long. If we land her, we should be a force since we will be able to match up with Cal Poly and all their size.

  14. ruffles May 24, 2018 5:12 pm

How long ago I asked about that being possible, but no response (borup), I guess was too much excitement about sandbows. I was saying borup’s instagram was kinda maybe giving small hints, or maybe only wishful thinking on my part. And from what I read about UNC volleyball, J. Scoles was kinda the glue that the others gravitated towards, so the sandbows are really lucky to have her, talent + leadership. I know only speculation, but oooo exciting!

  15. Kahuna May 24, 2018 6:04 pm

I get the feeling that Taylor Borup is kind of in a bind. I read somewhere that there are some schools that want her but are not good fits for her academically and socially. Then there are schools that want her but no room or scholarship available for her.

Hope she is considering UH but don’t know what she is looking for in a school. UH is kind of far from home for her but hopefully she is the adventurous type and willing to venture to Hawaii and learn a new culture and be part of a top 20 team in front of one of the largest fan base in America.

C’mon Taylor. Join the Wahine Ohana. You will enjoy your time here and promise that you will be treated like family by the team and a celebrity by the fans.

  16. rabbit ears May 24, 2018 6:17 pm

Taylor Borup would be a good get. We need some tall top level players. Hope someone is camping outside her apartment.

  17. Brandon May 24, 2018 9:02 pm

We’re not in Borups top 3. It’s not a done deal so we may land her, but a couple pac12 schools, and other big name schools are looking at her. Don’t think she’ll land here but never say never

  18. Brandon May 24, 2018 9:04 pm

Also we never know if scoles May rejoin and play indoor. If she does, we will be a force. Girl has got some major game

  19. po’okela May 25, 2018 9:23 am

she’s (scoles) a total baller and loved the energy of the indoor game.

i wonder if she’ll be able to come to the indoor matches and not feen to play in front of a large crowd once again.

  20. kahuna May 25, 2018 4:04 pm

If Julia Scoles is going to play indoor again, she would have to wear some kind of helmet to protect her from another concussion. I believe she decided to concentrate on beach because the game on the beach is a lot more safe.

With the indoor game, you can bang heads in some many ways. You can collide with teammates going for the ball, you can bang your head on the floor trying to roll after pancaking a ball, you can get hit in the head by a spiked ball, you can go crashing into seats trying to save a ball.

She may fear long term affect on multiple concussions so she is doing the safe thing and giving up indoor in favor of beach. I know she will do well as a beach player also.

I have the feeling that Julia will be similar to Carly Kan. Both are athletic, Both have high volleyball IQ and both are winners. Whomever is paired up with Julia should be thrilled. Julia was the #1 volleyball recruit in her state. Top 10 nationally in her class and has a 30 inch vertical. If that is not enough, she was an all state basketball player in NC. Extremely talented young lady with ton and tons of athleticism.

She will be a stud, I predict.

  21. kahuna May 25, 2018 4:13 pm

WOW…forgot to mention she is a 2 time state High Jump and Long Jump champion.

    Dang…the women is talented.

  22. WizeMary May 26, 2018 4:21 pm

Somehow I feel a 1997 vibe with this team.

  23. WizeMary May 26, 2018 4:26 pm

Casey Castillo or Sibley = Jessica Sudduth
McKenna Granato = Heidi Illustre-ish – had the most attempts and low 200 hitting pctg.
Iosia vs. Ma’afala = Hubert vs. Miyashiro frequent subbing out of the starting setter
Williams or Howling = Jenny Roberts

  24. rabbit ears May 27, 2018 7:38 am

    #22 that’s not good.

  25. Andrew May 27, 2018 5:54 pm

    #22 and #24

Not to mention the volleyball landscape is much different now than it was back then in ’97. The haves are much farther ahead than the have nots now.

  26. Volleyman May 28, 2018 1:00 pm

According to Volleytalk, Sydney Kidd and Chloe Luyties will not be returning to the Sandbows next year.

  27. rabbit ears May 28, 2018 2:08 pm

Luyties is a tough lost. Not sure why she wasn’t given more opportunities this season. The girl can ball.

  28. Kahuna May 28, 2018 4:59 pm

Too bad about Luyties. She would have be pen a full timer next season. Wonder if there was some resentment on her part when the coaches put true freshman Page Dreeuws in over her.

With Luyties leaving, UH is going to need someone who was not expected compete for time, to step up. My guess is Napoleon, Scoles and Loker will probably jump into the flights. Maybe someone like Jenna Banz, Cali Bunn or Reagan Hurkett need to get better in a hurry.

Wonder if there will be a graduate transfer coming in and add to an already crowded roster.
