Gallup leaves Warriors
Walk-on quarterback Kyle Gallup has decided to leave the Warriors.
“I’m not going to be leaving Hawaii, but I’m going to be stepping away from football,” said Gallup, who was one of four quarterbacks on the spring roster. “I love the program. I love coach Rolo. I love what we’re doing. … In my heart, I feel like I’m being called to enter into a new season of life. I’m a walk-on, too, and for me and my future wife, it’s not necessarily the best situation if I’m working. It’s kind of needing to step up and enter into a new season of life, and me feeling God is calling me into a new season of life.”
Gallup and Haley Beaumont, a member of the UH track and field team, are set to marry this summer.
Gallup said he has no plans to transfer to another school before earning a bachelor’s degree at UH. Without football, Gallup is on schedule to graduate in May 2019.
He also said he was receiving a fair opportunity in spring practice, and the decision was not football-related.
“I felt I was on that way,” Gallup said of being in the rotation. “I feel I’m fully capable of doing that. But I think, even if that had been the situation, the person I am … if I feel I’m called in a certain direction in my faith, I need to do that, or I’m not going to feel like I’m doing what I’m supposed to be doing.”
Gallup said he will focus on school, work, his wedding, and helping his churches. He attends Pawaa on University Avenue and Mana in Kapolei.
There are no plans for the Warriors to move another player, such as QB-turned-wideout Karson Greeley, to quarterback this spring. Saint Louis School quarterback Chevan Cordeiro and Kolney Cassel, who has played at Sacramento State and SMU, are set to join the Warriors this summer.
Gallup was a walk-on at Marshall in 2015. He enrolled at UH in 2016, but redshirted in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. He missed most of 2017 with an injury and, when he returned, he was set to move to tight end. He moved back to quarterback this spring after the tight end position was eliminated in the switch to a run-and-shoot offense.
“This was going to be the year I was able to play,” Gallup said. “I was getting the reps. I was getting everything I wanted. In my heart, I feel I’m being called to enter a new season of life.”

Today’s baseball game between UH and UC Davis has been postponed because of heavy rain in Davis, Calif.
The teams are scheduled to play Saturday and Sunday, with both games starting at 10 a.m. Hawaii time.
“Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains,” coach Mike Trapasso said.
He said the team will spend today in study hall and watching the Masters.
“That’s the schedule for today,” he said. “It sounds exciting, doesn’t it?”
The rain out today will help Dylan Thomas recover to close on Saturday and Sunday. Although it may rain on Saturday, making Sunday a doubleheader. Interesting times for the baseball team.

Mr. Tsai, your comments yesterday was spot on. But I think the powers that are in charge does not think this sport has the prestige that other sporting events bring. Perhaps too violent for them. Revenue sharing sounds good tho. We’ll see down the road.

On the one hand, life is short — and a college-playing window is even shorter — so I would have tried to have played as long as I could. The real world is a cold, cold place.
On the other hand, he’s a walk-on who doesn’t have a disposable income, so, yeah, maybe it’s time to get on with life.
Either way, he’s a bright, friendly young man and it’s always good to chat with him.
We need some real committed football players. Too many of them on present roster
are just there……looking for an answer.

Gonna miss not having a TE position even though we never really had a TE presence that intimidated defenses. Good TE’s are as rare as good centers in basketball.

It is snippy and snarky at times on the WSN. A little more fiery exchanges there than here, It can definitely be a turn off for some. The rhythm here is at a nice comfortable pace for the “Mature fan”. The Sports Hawaii Forum used to be somewhere in the middle but after the guy that was doing all of the preparation and legwork had his baby (Chawan Cut?), it’s not as interesting as it used to be there. One thing that connects everything is the “Stephen said” factor, there is usually deference to things Mr. Tsai details. UH sports. Love the discussions.
Former UH CB Nick Nelson tore his meniscus during a private workout for an NFL team. He will have surgery and will be out 3-4 months. He was pegged as a 4th round draft pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. He should be ready for the upcoming season.
Kyle Hatton had one bad outing.
I would trust him with a six-run cushion.
But I get it.

So what happened to today’s scheduled 4:30 pm football practice? I was at lower campus from 1:45 pm to catch the first softball game of a double-header with Cal Poly. Wahine won first game 11-0. I kept waiting for the football players to show up on either the grass practice field or Cooke Field. No football. I left UH around 5:05 pm when it became obvious there was not going to be football practice in the afternoon. So what happened?

The Rainbow Warriors have made a change to Saturday’s #HawaiiFB practice moving the start time from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.
So I drive in to lower campus to watch football practice at 4:30 and see the field empty so I turn around and drive back out only to find out I don’t get my $6 back for a 2 minute visit. No refund policy. Something not right about that. At least post a sign or something. Gonna email Matlin and see what he says.
I am disappointed with UH Athletics when they make changes without posting a notice on their web site. Nor did they update their published practice schedule. I double checked the schedule before making may plans for the day. It was 4:30 pm. I feel as though they don’t give a s###. I drove from Ewa Beach for the football practice. I went early only because the Wahine softball team was playing. But the games were televised, so I would not have driven to UH just to see their games. And in my opinion, it’s no wonder attendance to football games continues to drop with this kind of attitude from UH.
26 – It’s not Matlin’s call. Call the Facilities/Parking office to complain.
27 – It’s a practice for the team, not the public. The coaches can change the schedule if they wish.
#27 the change in schedule was posted all over social media on Friday afternoon. They weren’t negligent with fan notification.
