Byrd makes quick impact

Let’s play word association.

Clue: Fast receiver.

Answer: Byrd is the word.

JC transfer Cedric Byrd has caught attention of spectators with his quick first step, quicker cuts and his Hoy-Hoy-trap hands. Byrd, who is expected to complement slotback John Ursua, has excelled in the second slot and run-and-shoot offense, and is making the critics forget … uh … um … what was the name of that receiver who was just here?

Byrd, who transferred to UH in January, said he learned of UH’s plans to reinstall the run-and-shoot during his recruiting visit.

“They said I would have a lot of fun in this offense,” Byrd said

In JC, Byrd said he was timed at 4.35 seconds in the 40.

Byrd said he is enjoying UH and Hawaii. “I love it,” he said. “Everybody is, like, chill. Everybody is laid back.”

Ouch…I forgot the slots name but his nickname was hands of stone and it was for a completely different reason than Roberto Duran…

Love it when a plan comes together! Fly, Byrd, fly!

    Second and still notabot!

I believe offensive recruiting will gain traction with the RnS back

“I love it when a plan comes together!” Gonna love watching Byrd and Ursua work the secondary.

who on the qb depth chart has the know-how to run the R&S? I hope the offense will click with this strategy…. should be exciting!

I’m not going to trash players that transfer. But I’d like to welcome Mr. Byrd to Warrior Nation with open arms. Glad someone is stepping up.

That’s the kind of info we were waiting for. I was wondering what his 40 time was. Now lets hope Rolo can incorporate all of the receivers/backs in all kinds of different packages to keep everybody engaged and focused (and fresh). But the base package with two playmakers like that (Ursua/Byrd), that’s a terrific starting point. So great to hear.

Speaking of two playmakers, the best dual threat ever are RGM and DB.

fastest UH player was Mike Aikiu (sp) who ran the 40 in something like 4.32 seconds or was it 4.23

selected by Houston Oilers in the 3rd round, but did not stay long — actually, fastest, but played in only a few games over 2 or 3 seasons

40 times are great for hyping the player up but quickness and football smarts can carry you a long way.

Two of the best slots in UH history….Greg Salas and Davone Bess….were not blazer but quick, smart and strong. Incidentally, both had careers in the NFL. I think Ursua will be the next one.

Young Mr. Byrd will have another gear but I hope he concentrates on reading the defense and catching the ball. Speed is not going to help if you cannot get open.

If Byrd can master the offense with big time speed then……WOW…..we will have a big time stud on our team.

    Go Cedric Byrd!

UHAD should develop a strong plan, if not already in the works, to attract fans starting from the elementary grade level

it will take years and winning seasons with exciting playing, offense and defense, to rebuild the base.

us, who were younger in the 1960’s are near the top of the “senior class” — I know of only 2 men, one 96 and other 101, who still travel to away games – 1st was with us for Michigan and 2nd at UCLA

same principle applies to Boyd Gaming whose “seniors” are quickly disappearing — these are the ones from the late 1950s through early 60s, who were in their late 20s or early 30s, who supported Sam Boyd’s opening of his “downtown casinos” and kept it going after the “twin-tower” attack — The Cal GM readily admits that the Hawaii crowd kept them afloat after 911

appears to me that the “younger” gamblers today who use Vacations Hawaii stay downtown, but gamble elsewhere — just see the small crowds at the Cal and Main street Station casinos — even on weekends — Fremont Experience casinos are packed including Fremont Hotel & Casino

great day in our valley — started a little overcast, but sun’s a blazing away now — great for those with panels for hot water and electricty

AHouse, Mike did not have the greatest hands, but he did lead the nation in blocked punts and had the quickest first 3-4 steps I have ever seen in person. In today’s testing environment I would not be surprised if he went sub 4.3, and that’s not hyperbole, this is a guy that beat Ron Brown of the Rams and 1984 gold Olympic 4 by 100 relay team, twice in the 60 in college. Mike is without question the fastest bow of all time.

How fast was Ashley lelie? I seem to remember him just running away from defenders with no trouble. I hope Cedric Byrd will be remembered at the same time as some of these great Warriors mentioned above.

#9 Kahuna, right on with those two. Don’t forget Chad Owens, he could cut on a dime, had Barry Sanders type hips and that burst to maximize “YAC”!

Anyone know where that WR transfer with the posted “dropsies” ended up?

  16. Petey808 March 25, 2018 12:47 pm

Anybody know how Kalakaua T is progressing?

  17. suckkabooya March 25, 2018 12:59 pm

Yep. For those who never seen Mike Akiu rush the punter It would be hard to believe just the hearing stories. There’s got to be some videos of it somewhere. Some teams had him figured out and could contain him but there were some teams that he just “went off” on. I never seen speed like that before or since. His first step was unbelievable too. There was a long time urban legend that he had timed under 4.0 somewhere. You would normally scoff at such a claim but for him it was possible. Legendary Warrior.
