The closer

Head coach Nick Rolovich departed last night on the final recruiting mission before the Feb. 7 signing period.

The Warriors are expected to host at least a half dozen prospects (and their parents) this coming weekend.

    Go get’em Rolo!
    Go Warriors!

Big Weekend to close out recruiting we still have some needs to fill…

  3. PONO January 30, 2018 11:18 am

We have some big needs. The holes keep growing with the transfers. If you’re not concerned about starters leaving you are nuts.

I remember watching McDonald getting loose during halftime warm ups and thinking his release was similar to Tim Tebow’s. Mc Donald had (last season) a long, looping, winding, “rubbery” (not tight) throwing motion. In his Hudl video he seems to excel on deep throws more than the short passes. He may struggle on pitch and catch stuff unless he gets a lot of tutoring in my opinion. He does have a nice big body and a lot of foot speed though. Should be an interesting competition there for QB. I cant wait to see it.

The University of Hawaii is a good school academically and the athletes will get a good education if they put their minds to it. Also, where else can you get to live in the best climate in the United States, and swim in some of the best beaches in the world.

The football team is also like ohana (family), and in these days of smart phones and FaceTime, your Mom and Dad are only a click away. In addition, Coach Rolo is a straight up guy who knows football and is respected by the community. There are so many benefits by coming to Hawaii that you will never get anywhere else!

On my break from pulling a plow – from my view, McDonald needs to be on the field somewhere, the kid can run.

I agree 100%. I think (in my opinion) you can see Rolo put in a lot of effort trying to build a brand (Ohana, Hawaiian style, etc.) and into creating (in its infancy stage) an identity (Run and Shoot; Speed on defense) for this program. Just like in a business there are always constant adjustments to the key staff (coaches) and staff (players). You may sometimes lose some “good people” in the process but there has to be mutual trust between ALL parties involved (even administration). It takes time to build and in the beginning (where it is now) it (success) may be hard to perceive for some so it is very fragile and can be destroyed by the less patient. When everyone is on the same page this can work.

Growing pains – there will be losses but there will be gains! Keep up the good work Coach!

Thank you blog, for always knowing I’m not a bot!

Probably some mainland parents are concerned about
the recent nuke attack aimed at Hawaii. Thus Rolo may
be trying to calm their fears down somehow someway.
Macademia chocolate nuts would help. 🙂

Anyone think that maybe Rolo may have cleaned house with the Coaches and now with the Players.
Pressure is on to win and get the fans back before the point of no return.
Now is the time to find out, so he can recruit new players before letter of intent day February 7th!
Best wishes for a great signing day.

    I think it’s a matter of perspective.
If I were in charge, I’d promote the fact that Power 5 schools have so much respect for my program they’re poaching a Mountain West school.
And if I were in charge and somebody left, I’d say, thanks for your contributions and I’m sorry you’re going to miss being part of a new and exciting offense.
We had a reporter who left the paper to join an online (non-sports) publication in town. We wished him well and …

On the previous post; OL 6’3″ who can dunk a basketball?, yikes!! maybe he can also be used to try blocking xtra point after td or FG’s. How’s his 40 speed??, might he be used as a FB in short yardage? does he have good hands catching passes? Lots of possibilities, I think??

  13. Stephen Tsai January 30, 2018 2:10 pm

I just realized “the closer” could either be like Mariano Rivera or Robert Flack/Donny Hathaway’s “Closer I get to you …”

  14. Rodney January 30, 2018 3:51 pm

Not to confident in Run n shoot with this staff. They should hire Ron Lee as consultant or offensive analyst

  15. Buffoman January 30, 2018 4:28 pm

Someone a while back posted that he did not see a problem with the r/s option. It needed some more tweaking but it had possibilities. I agreed especially since the guru of the r&s said it was now passed it time. Why has many teams with a tight end seem to burn us in a passing attack and we were never able to do the same to opponents when we had one? And now we’re going to delete that position. Hope we are going in the right direction.

  16. Inyoface January 30, 2018 6:07 pm

Hawaii football warrior nation group should be banned from Facebook.

  17. What? January 30, 2018 6:32 pm

RnS, RPO, West Coast Offense, Triple option, Pro Set offense.

Hopefully they can find an offense that can fit their personnel.

It seemed with Chow, UH changed offenses, and coaches every year. The trend with coaches leaving and players leaving has continues under Rolo. UH must be a really good training program for players and coaches because other programs are poaching the players and the coaches at the same time.

Year 3 and 4 are his money years. If Rolo doesn’t produce, the will there be another coaching change? Or, will he be given a longer leash than the previous HC’s? He did get the team to the Hawaii Bowl and won in his first year. That Hawaii Bowl win probably bought him an extra year or two to improve.

Inyoface: why did you say that?

#17 why do you care you’re banned, hehe.

  21. amela January 30, 2018 8:15 pm

I hope Mermea stays, the new defense coaches will he help him more than the previous staff with all their experience.

  22. Rabbit Ears January 30, 2018 10:04 pm

It’s pretty obvious why coaches leave. If Rolo is the lowest paid coach in the league. What do you think the assistant are. Add in high cost of living.

Tom Warrior Nation- Keep on doing your thing. The university AD need ten of you.

  23. Palolo January 30, 2018 10:50 pm

We will be better than 3-9. Coach Rolo upgraded the coaches and now has more openings for better recruits. If quitters not with us just get out of the way, new players coming in Feb. 7th. Geevum.

Looking at the defensive line situation for the upcoming season I think (in my opinion) there is REAL reason for optimism here. If Mermea could be convinced to stay on board the amount of different packages they could employ could be as diverse as the receiver packages. Rittner and Thomas have such incredibly high motors its unreal how they just “pop” on the Hudl videos. Thomas is kind of skinny but damn fast and Rittner has some nice thickness for a young guy and gets low leverage on the edge rush. Mataafa looks more comfortable with his leverage at chest and shoulder level. He doesn’t force blockers backwards but “blasts” then sheds them, then squares up and then “blasts” again. Keene is a “scrape and square” leg wrapper, not as physical on video but very effective (Alvis Satele style). Moala put up nice numbers that kind of went under the radar (oh yeah, plus he blocks kicks). Akoteu was a little more effective than Faalologo (he was banged up a lot) and looks ready (he seemed to have a nice comfort level with his abilities toward the end of the season) to break out. Zeno was a beast against Western Carolina and has a weird quickness to his powerfulness (if that makes sense) that surprises you sometimes. He gotta finish tackles a little better though. Padello is awesome but is so undersized. What an inspiration to all us normal sized people. I also cant wait to see what Doug Russell brings to the rotation. On his video he constantly pushes dual blockers backwards. I hope he’s ready. His is a different facet than Akoteu. more of a trodder, while Akoteu is more of a scrapper. But Mermea is the jewel of the bunch in my opinion. He can line up anywhere and penetrate. He has next level size and has some chippiness to his temperament. I didn’t even mention Kahahawai-Welch who can redshirt, bulk and tone up, then become the next Alama-Francis or Mel Purcell. And then there’s Laulu who looks like he could be a solid, legit. H-back. I cant wait. I hope things work out for EVERYBODY (players and fans).

Actually, we play Navy… But I’m with you. Whoever is on the field wearing a UH jersey will have my support.

    RE: #25

Great analysis, suckkabooya. Liked your descriptions of each players style and technique. Do you think Taala will have an impact this season?

  28. Maddog50 January 31, 2018 5:44 am

As the supigning day looms any idea who those 6 or seven prospects might be? Really jacked for “Solo” to commit on Sat. Barring last minute stuff indications are he will commit-really like Fila from Farmington tweet about being thankful for opportunity. I expect this young man to be on scholarship after two year period. Would really like to have some confirmation of any additional transfers rather than rumored, so as to put it to bed and move on. Battoon Banker et al will put as much speed and aggressiveness on field as they can muster. This will be exciting. Offensively with the addition of Lavao, Ilm, Pryor we need two maybe even three immediate impact OL. Protecting the QB. Combined with a play extending QB will enhance and improve the receiver performance. I believe the culture of the program will reset to the mind set “Your in for a long day against us”. Time for Tavai, Mautautia, Hensley et al to seize control of teams mantra “Iam as mad as hell and I’m not gonna take this any more! Exciting times ahead! GoWarriors!

  29. Maddog50 January 31, 2018 5:56 am

Should be signing and Farrington in the above post. One last thing, please give strong consideration to Tom Kitaguchi’s effort to support the program. We need more folks like him, there is strength in numbers! GoWarriors!!!

  30. A-House January 31, 2018 6:46 am

walk-ons and scholarship — NCAA or UH rule not eligible for 2 years before earning a scholarship?

while many “flap” about supporting UH Tom K is doing a hell-of-a-job with his support to UH — that’s putting the $$$ where the mouth is!

wish our legislature would do the same — ditto the Hawaii Tourism Authority

  31. roygbivs January 31, 2018 9:23 am

    Sorry.
    Yes, it’s Navy.

    Thanks #26
