    1. I’ll never hit that high note.

  3. Don January 28, 2018 5:22 pm

The refs need to issue the UCLA bench a warning. Some nasty language coming from that group…

  4. Aloha73G January 28, 2018 5:32 pm

That rally at 19-17 was AMAZING on both sides!!

  5. Cindy Luis January 28, 2018 5:35 pm

sorry keep losing the wireless. UH up 24-20. no 24-22.

  6. Cindy Luis January 28, 2018 5:36 pm

Van Tilburg who looked like he strained his back on his first serve puts it down. 25-22

  7. Big Island volleyball fan January 28, 2018 5:44 pm

If Van Tilburg’s back hurt so much, why not rest him? I’d rather lose to UCLA than to exacerbate his injury and risk the whole season. A player’s health is more important.

  8. Don January 28, 2018 5:52 pm

    7. What back problem? SVT looks fine…

Matautia in for van Tilburg. Cowell also in for Rosenmeier

  15. Brandon January 28, 2018 6:23 pm

Is SVT out because his back is still sore or wade just trying something new?

  16. Cindy Luis January 28, 2018 6:32 pm

UH wins the challenge, touch on Cowell attack. Worsley immediately turned to Wade to say challenge.

  17. Cindy Luis January 28, 2018 6:35 pm

  22. Cindy Luis January 28, 2018 7:28 pm

    Bruins up 23-21 TO UH

  23. Warriorfan January 28, 2018 7:46 pm

Well not a good loss, need every win possible in case Uh does not win the big west tournament to get the at large.
Too many serving and hitting errors to pull it off.

  24. Big Island volleyball fan January 28, 2018 7:56 pm

    23. One loss won’t sink the team, especially since UH had a previous win with UCLA, a good split. Likewise, if UH can split with Long Beach at home in the final two matches, there would be a good chance to get the at large. It would be great if UH could beat the Beach on Senior night.

  25. Cindy Luis January 28, 2018 7:59 pm

great match. UCLA wins it on an ace 32-30

  26. WaWa January 28, 2018 8:27 pm

Haven’t read any of the posts, but here’s my take on this match. I do like how Charlie gave a guy like Cowell meaningful playing time. However, I did not like how he used his Outside Hitters as Serving Specialists for Middle Blockers. Can’t remember if it was set 1 or 2 when he used Matautia for a Middle Blocker. That is his next OH down the depth chart. SVT & Rosenmeier definitely could have been replaced during the second set by Matautia.

Then 3rd set comes along and both OHs are replaced by Matautia & Cowell. In that 4th set, Rosenmeier was used for a MB, SVT was used for Parapunov so that left NO left side OHs to back up any of the OHs. I feel Cowell could have been replaced by Rosenmeier down the stretch, but he wasn’t available because he served for a middle. It was a relief that SVT was able to get those kills in because UCLA’s block should not have been worrying about the ball going to Cowell when he was in the front.

Seasons ago Charlie was terrible at using his bench. I’m not sure if it’s when he had Zarkovic was added to the staff. Although there were times when both Siki & Fey should have been yanked. Anywho, I don’t wanna get off tangent. “Depth aint ‘depth’ if you don’t use it,” but you don’t want to use it to the point where it limits your options.

Granted Anastassiades missed all but one serve last night. He should continue to use OHs like Cowell/ Anastassiades who are lower on the OH depth chart or, heck, even Namahoe who’s one job is to play backrow…although his serve needs some work and is probably part of the reason he isn’t seeing much time.

  27. Hot January 28, 2018 8:46 pm

    26. Also, Wade has three liberos with starting experience. I’m wondering why he doesn’t suit up two. Specifically, Namahoe. Gage Worsley has a great serve and can be used as a DS to be in the back row with Tuileta. Tuileta has had his passing and defensive woes, so why not have a second libero available? I remember they used to suit up two, when Harrison Phelps was the second libero.

  28. Ron January 28, 2018 8:55 pm

This was a good reality check for the Warriors. They have to play there best to win and they did not do that tonight. It was still very good volleyball and Ma’a has really stepped up his game. Agree with BIVF, we need at least a split with LBS. We need to sweep the rest of the conference which will not be easy. This team has the horses for a title run, they just need a little more time working together .

  29. Kahuna January 28, 2018 9:40 pm

Brah….we lost to the #2 ranked team in the country. Some of you make like we lost to some scrub team. Of course this a disappointing lost but this lost will not affect us negatively in the national ranking nor will it affect us negatively on the national stage. We were able to hang with the #2 in the country with our “B” team OHs for most of the match. I do wonder if UCLA was to take out Missry and Hatch and still compete?

This team will be better for this. Plenty of holes exposed and UH can now patch up those holes and improve on this.

  30. Lori January 28, 2018 10:08 pm

    Some observations – not criticisms

It appears SVT is still not comfortable on the left. It shows in the big games hence a lot of mistakes last night and tonight until he went back to the opposite. Why did Charlie sit out SVT so long – maybe his back was hurting him? Why did he wait until the middle of the 4th to bring SVT back in (yes, they hung in there for a while but by that time it was a frenzy to catch up and keep up). I think Austin deserves the start over Brett. Yes Brett does have good games but I do think he is inconsistent also. Anyway just some thoughts. Tough loss but I agree, the B team played well to keep the guys in the match.

  31. Lori January 28, 2018 10:23 pm

Sorry. I just read the article by Cindy. Yes, SVT did tweak his back and that is why he was out until the middle of the 4th. I do still think he is not comfortable in the other position and it might become troublesome against the better teams.

  32. T103 January 29, 2018 5:32 am

Junk loss but UCLA is #2. I’ll take a split with them over being shut out going 0-2 against them. I noticed first 2 sets both teams did well serving unlike the 1st night, service errors up the yin yang. The SE returned in the 3rd & 4th, maybe b/c they were trying to serve tough to throw each others ‘system’ off. I understand why they pulled SVT but not sure why Rosey. They had their reasons. Austin did good, he hits a sharp angle, I wonder if the blockers had moved in closer to the middle would he be able to hit line, have we seen him hit line yet as one of his shots he has in his arsenal? Nonetheless it was a fun match to watch, didn’t go our way. I hope we can continue to work on establishing our middles and open the pin hitters. Rado his such a heavy ball and he’s a leftie which is a little bit harder to defend b/c most attackers are right. And need we say more about Gage? uhhhh hello!? #1 recruited libber in the country! Glad we got him! Anyway, here’s hoping we improve and stay healthy!

  33. Warriorfan January 29, 2018 5:58 am

At home Uh should win these type of matches though, expectations have gone higher, things to work on sVT has to get it going on the left because rado is too good to keep on the bench and service, need to find a way to get serves in the court in the clutch the warriors missed a lot of serves late in fourth when they could not afford to.
And blocking needs a lot of work.
Ucla is good but Splitting with them at home makes them favorites over UH for at large hopes ,need to beat BYU now.very few chances for error especially at home long beach hosts the big west tournament and beating them there will be a tall task so need to get every out of conference win at home from here out!

  34. Warriorfan January 29, 2018 6:15 am

That second to last play was just unfortunate bad luck for the warriors , if they had a libero on the court they probably pick up that hit by the ucla opposite, looked diggable but Gasman was back there.

  35. Warriorfan January 29, 2018 6:18 am

One thing I am upset with coach wade, he should have called his last time out after that freak play by Maa and kill by hassenhauer UH was stunned they needed to take time out and ice Hassenhauer chances are he probably misses his serve after timeout:/.

  36. islandman January 29, 2018 3:07 pm

Rado was taken out in the 4th set partly because of his blocking, per TV commentary. Stijn was subbed in for him.

  37. Cindy Luis January 29, 2018 5:18 pm

    http://www.hawaiiwarriorworld.com/?p=45340
new thread up for Monday regarding poll.

    26. Matautia came in to serve in Set 1. UH wins it.
Rosenmeier was struggling. 2 kills in Set 1, none in Set 2. UH loses. Van Tilburg strains back on a serve early in set 1. Told me when he fell he thought he had dislocated something
Cowell played all four sets. Started Sets 3 and 4 at OH. Cowell was 5-1-14.
    Anastassiades did not play Sunday.

    27. he has suited up 2 but didn’t Sunday. G. Worsley came in as a DS but you have to remember in the men’s game you only can come in once if you are not a starter. no re-entry as in the women’s game.

    28. they don’t need to split with Long Beach State. Win the Big West tournament and they get the automatic into the NCAA. But a split would be good for the case for an at-large.

    30. Both Rosenmeier and Matautia have both been inconsistent but Rosenmeier puts up a bigger block.

    31. SVT’s natural position is at left-side and converted to Opp.
after so many reps at Opp the last two years agree it has taken him a while to get comfortable there. but if have watched this season, he has played on the right in some rotations as well as being in the middle on switch blocks.

    32. why pull Rosenmeier? stat line 2-4-10, no kills after Set 1. no blocks.

    33. I’d say UCLA is favored to win the MPSF.now. BYU has shown it is vulnerable. We’ll see how they look when they are here in the Outirigger.

    34. to be honest, I think UH started celebrating a bit, thinking it was an ace. the crowd certainly was cheering like it was over. There was NO block up.
and remember Gasman had just served so no way to have a libero in.

    35. agree with you.

    36. don’t hear TV so don’t know when that was said. h was 1-1-2 before leaving play-by-play doesn’t list subs so can’t tell you when that was.
