Pay scale weighs against Warriors

Some teams are the Yankees.

Some teams are the Marlins.

Guess which Mountain West football teams are playing high-stakes poker and which are playing Go Fish?

According to USA Today, this is the total salary pool for assistant football coaches:

1. Boise State — $2,085,101

2. Colorado State — $1,884,000

3. San Diego State — $1,741,708

4. Fresno State — $1,700,000

5. Wyoming — $1,587,612

6. Nevada — $1,524,605

7. UNLV — $1,474,532

8. New Mexico — $1,459,875

9. Utah State — $1,452,320

10. San Jose State — $1,278,036

11. Hawaii — $1,200,000

Air Force did not report its salaries because, well, it’s Air Force.

    Any prospects visiting this weekend?

  3. Old School Dave December 10, 2017 8:49 am

Still Bleed Green, but kinda tired of this situation. Not sure such information (UH assistant salary pool ranks last in MWC) has any effect on Legislators, UH Administrators (some who would like to see football go away), and the general public (some who view this as irrelevant and an excuse for not winning). Sadly there is a sentiment that winning will return if UH just hires a coach who will eliminate running plays and just pass on every down. With the nearest MWC school some 2500 miles away, such facts about the condition of the Football program (aging facilities, low salaries, lacking resources for players, transportation costs) are “out of sight, out of mind.”

In the meantime millions more of State funding ($$$) will be provided for the Mental Hospital and now a new computer system.

    Old School Dave:
Eight visits this weekend, some more next weekend. It’s going to be a nice Christmas for UH, or so I’ve been told

  5. Arcumfortis December 10, 2017 9:13 am

Seems a pretty direct correlation between assistant coach pay scale and team performance in the Mountain West. Nothing too mysterious here. The only mystery is why we don’t respond to the simplicity. If we want a poor product on the field let’s keep paying poorly. At least the results will be predictable.

  6. kama krab December 10, 2017 9:45 am

    Howzit Everybody,

Damn that’s a pretty pathetic stat. As long as we are one of the lowest paying jobs in the nation, we will continue to see up and down results.
There are times where I wish I could give more but buying season tickets and pay-per-view eat a lot into what’s left in my pocket. Donating the $20 by many would really help. Thank you Tom for building the foundation.

  7. burro sabio December 10, 2017 9:48 am

Hoping for a happy outcome for Ivin Jasper’s son Jarren.
As Mr. Tsai noted a few days ago, there’s something to be said for assistant coaches wanting stability. There’s also a lot to be said for friendship and loyalty.

State funding has to go to solve the homeless problem such as providing more affordable housing and for rail and infrastructure repairs, among other things. The general public has to provide for their own housing and the cost of living before football donations or tickets.

  9. H-Man December 10, 2017 10:14 am

Totally agree with Acrumfortis. Can’t expect more if you pay poorly. I find it shameful. As for Air Force, when you consider their head coach’s salary is $2.5 mil, they probably have the highest assistants’ pool and refrain from reporting since it will serve no purpose other than to shame the Mountain West.

  10. H-Man December 10, 2017 10:22 am

Hawaii Athletics is like going to a gun fight with as knife.

  11. Tom-warriornation December 10, 2017 11:05 am

Mahalo Kama crab; and others who have chipped in; our team needs more fans like you!

  12. Lowtone123 December 10, 2017 11:11 am

With that kind of money UH will only be a stepping stone for young coaches to move on to bigger opportunities at other schools that can pay more.

  13. ai-eee-soos December 10, 2017 11:53 am

ST: That’s great news on the recruiting front.

Gotta sign that OL coach too.

” Eight visits this weekend, some more next weekend. It’s going to be a nice Christmas for UH, or so I’ve been told. “

  14. What? December 10, 2017 12:09 pm

There you go, the money says it all. Other teams have money, UH doesn’t.

The state has to address affordable housing, rail transit and other social programs before addressing the need to improve UH football.

Even in our own budgets at home, we ask ourselves, is it a need or a want. If it’s a need, we spend. If it’s a want, we save until we can afford it.

UH will win again. They just won’t win on a consistent basis

  15. Stephen Tsai December 10, 2017 1:28 pm

I think affordable housing is more of the concern than homelessness, although it can be said one leads to the other. I think if you throw money into housing — like a section 8 program — it doesn’t keep housing costs down. Maybe there should be a reinstal cap? All I know is it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

  16. turfwar December 10, 2017 1:28 pm

ST you should publish the COA for each school. That is just as big if not a bigger factor in competing with other MW schools.

  17. suckkabooya December 10, 2017 1:55 pm

I think the worst decision the State made was the decision to host the APEC Conference. Please no more of that.

  18. Ipu Man December 10, 2017 4:06 pm

    As Condo maintenance fees rose,
    so did homelessness.
You can no longer charge $400 a month for an empty condo.
The law was well intended to keep buildings in shape, but
it benefited the banks more than the people.

  19. islandman December 10, 2017 5:42 pm

14 and 15. The homeless problem can lead to a health crisis like in San Diego which has a Hepatitis A crisis. It can happen in Honolulu too.
Honolulu has to open more restrooms for the homeless among other things, having vaccinations, etc.
    9. Another blog said Air Force is below UH in salary pool.

  20. roygbivs December 10, 2017 6:35 pm

I do hope that the AD @UHM gets to see these figures, and can get us to around that 1.4-1.6M range. Have to stay competitive with our counterparts or we’ll be escorting ourselves out the door. This is our ONLY D1 university for the state and should put more resources into it. Considered condensing the community colleges to 4-5 campuses, take those funds and make a commitment to the community, sports brings all of us together.

    Thinking out loud

  21. Casual Observer December 10, 2017 6:37 pm

    18. Vacant or not, condo maintenance fees must be paid by all owners since there are common expenses for upkeep of the property. Some buildings cost more than others depending, e.g., on how many amenities your building has and the cost of maintaining those amenities. If your Board doesn’t upkeep your building and allow it to go into disrepair, the property will lose value and become an undesirable place to live. Unfortunately, $400/mo is maybe low average. But for sure we all wish it could be lower.

  22. WWF December 10, 2017 7:38 pm

Increasing taxable revenue streams into the State could cure a lot of problems. A Lottery benefitting education and housing would be a good start.

  24. al December 10, 2017 9:04 pm

1.8 mil should be the minimum salary budget.
These figures that are posted probably do not include allocation for the additional assistant coach for 2018.

The scale should have projections for annual increases of a set percentage. Say 7-10% compounded annually for incumbent staffers.

“You get what you pay for.”
Maybe we need to increase our governor’s and legislator’s salaries. Eh?

    …nuff said!

  25. Steve December 11, 2017 3:05 am

It’s simply amazing to me that with the obvious problems with our state finances, with charges of corruption and gross over runs with not just the rail but many other projects, that we still talk about Fielding a football team at all ! School buildings in need of repair, skyrocketing rents that are driving people to the streets- even some hold jobs, I believe it’s time to give football a little less concern guys.

  26. Makiki December 11, 2017 3:31 am

That is this year – what have previous years been?

  27. burro sabio December 11, 2017 6:41 am

#25 – that is short-sighted. Everyone who believes we should not have a football team needs to look at the overall economic impact generated by a successful team. Most of all, government needs to look as the impact and invest in athletics. If you believe that the Diamond Head Classic is good for Hawaii, football can provide the same effect.

  28. Maddog50 December 11, 2017 6:42 am

I thought this was a Warrior Football blog-kudos to Tom Kitaguchi for his effort to raise some donation for the program-Tom I will be donating. I hope soon that we fund this program correctly it deserves to be.

  29. Coach DB December 11, 2017 8:17 am

YOU MUST BE WILLING TO FINANCE THE EXPECTATION!!!!!

  30. clyde December 11, 2017 8:49 am

Can they afford to pay a certain OL coach?

  31. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2017 9:23 am

    UH football makes money.
Can UH afford the other sports?

  32. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2017 9:36 am

Air Force’s top five assistants average more than $200,000 per year. UH only has one assistant earning more than $150,000. Unless Air Force has four coaches making $50,000 each, it still is likely UH is at the bottom of the pay pool.

  33. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2017 10:28 am

Hawaii: Source tells FootballScoop former Nebraska and Oregon State offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh is a candidate for the offensive line job at Hawaii.

    Sign up coach Cav, already.

  36. ai-eee-soos December 11, 2017 11:45 am

Hey – what happened to Stephen Tsai?

He posted 2 hours ago, then nada.

I hope that he has to attend a press conference

    announcing the signing of ….

  37. islandman December 11, 2017 11:53 am

    31. Wichita St once had a football team but that program lost money and was discontinued in the 1980’s, I think , per an article.
    They now have a successful
basketball program among other sports. So it’s possible to lose money in football.
Gonzaga makes money from its basketball program and donations, etc. That program once was in bad shape.
St Mary’s and UCI have non- football athletic programs but I didn’t look up how they are funded.

  38. Stephen Tsai December 11, 2017 11:55 am

    ai-ee-soos
