JJ returning to Hamilton

For June Jones, there will be a second act of Hamilton.

Jones said he has agreed to return for a second season with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League.

Jones was hired to run Hamilton’s offense on Aug. 2, then promoted to head coach on Aug. 24. The Tiger-Cats were 0-8 when Jones took over the team. They went 6-4 the rest of the season but missed qualifying for the six-team playoffs.

In a related note, Toronto defeated Calgary to win the 2017 Grey Cup. Calgary’s quarterback was Bo Levi Mitchell, who made a verbal commitment to UH in 2017 but ended up signing with SMU in 2018. Mitchell, who ended up transferring to Eastern Washington two years later, helped Calgary win the 2014 Grey Cup and was named the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player in 2016.

” Calgary’s quarterback was Bo Levi Mitchell, who made a verbal commitment to UH in 2017 but ended up signing with SMU in 2018.” Huh? 2017 and 2018? Must be early morning fuzzies.

June Jones’ college coaching days are likely over after the Art Briles decision. College administrators will not tolerate — or risk their jobs over — that kind of thought process given the broad scope of sexual abuse Briles tacitly condoned.

As far as the Run n Shoot being good for teams with less talent , etc. Rolo pointed out that the JJ teams had talent. Such as Lelie, Colt, Bess, Grice-Mullen and you can add the other names to those.
So besides that passing scheme, those teams had good athletes.
It’s a myth that those teams had less talent than the teams they played.

Islandman, I would say they had good talent, but they had a lot of wins against teams that had better and more talent– these would be Big 10, SEC, and Pac 10 conference teams. With JJ we had wins over Alabama, Michigan State, Northwestern, Purdue, Washington, and Arizona State. I would also consider BYU a talented team win since it went 12-2 the year we beat them. Boise State had a talented team in 2007– they went 10-3. In many cases we were undersized on the lines, undersized at linebacker and DB and did not have P5 team speed at DB either. Our receivers were quick and some could have played almost anywhere, but we also had good receivers that were undersized and quick but not fast. Jason Rivers was one of our best receivers, and he was a top sprinter in high school, but his 100 time would not have come close to qualifying for track meet finals on the mainland. Lelie was an exception, but we only got one like him.

    RE: #6
    Exactly!

Not saying we should go back to the pure Run n Shoot, but when you look at your bench and you don’t have the biggest, strongest, and fastest….one should devise schemes (if possible in this era) that might be better suited for their skills. Not just hope someone will suddenly become a superstar or we’ll get lucky.

Didn’t Boise have trick plays/schemes which their bench practiced? They got to get in the game and do something meaningful. Same idea.

If Rolo can get more talent and develop his existing players, then year 3 will be productive. If he can’t get the talent he needs or develop his current players, then well, we will see 15K to 20K at the stadium for every home game.

I still believe Rolo can get it done. Listening to call the coach show on Tuesday night sounded promising. Of course, that is what was said for this season.

    —————————-
I don’t think players like Bess or Colt would get into UH today. It sounds like UH Admin is less forgiving. That’s unfortunate because some players will do better the 2nd time around if given the opportunity to succeed.

I think that Ivan Jasper at Navy with Kenny Niumatalolo would make a great coordinator or head coach. He is a genius in running variations of the triple option that he and Kenny learned from Paul Johnson and at times he has had a good passing attack to go with it when Navy had a decent thrower. I have heard that he would consider adding more passing on a consistent basis like he played in with Paul Johnson at Hawaii with the right talent. That would create an offense like Central Florida with Scott Frost who runs mostly triple option with a deep passing attack opened up by the defense keying on the triple option. Air Force has tried this with good success.

Not only did JJ have talent, JJ was well versed in that offense so him running it is not the same as Rolovich running.

Some fans are just so unrealistic in asking coaches to change offense. You can only teach what you know. I know Rolovich played in the offense but he does not have the mind of a June Junes and would not be that efficient in running it. As a qb for UH all Rolo did was run the play the coaches call. He didn’t have to ask JJ what the rational behind calling the play at that time and why he thought that was the best play to run, etc…..

JJ have been a coach for a very long time and could call plays in his sleep. Rolo is only in his second year of being a HC and he does not have the experience off a June Jones.

You think anybody can just change offense and then expect it function like a charm??? You think coaches can just say..”you know what, I like the Navy offense…I think I’m going to run it”. It doesn’t work that way. You only coach what you know. Rolo knows a little RnS but also knows a little Pistol. He is trying to incorporate the best of both. I have no problems with him doing that. He just doesn’t have the players now.

We need to give Rolo more time to recruit players that fit his offense…what ever it is. We’re asking him to run his offense with players recruited for what looked like a “pro-style” offense. Similar to when Chow was hired, I really didn’t believe he would be successful his first two years. Chow simply didn’t inherit those types of players to run the pro-style offense he wanted.

We ran the ball to much in the second half of the season. Then again all we did was throw short passes to the sidelines. The deep pass and the middle of the field was never a threat. Aside from no passing threat, I think one of the reasons we didn’t run well in the second half is because Dru would not run. When Rolo was at Nevada, he always had QB’s that were a threat to run. Dru was never a threat to the opposing D as he always handed the ball off to DSJ. It made us one dimensional.

With his third recruiting class coming soon, I expect to see significant improvement in next years team. Like a die hard fan, we WILL renewed our season tickets for next year.

Rolo is doing fine. This complaining and bellyaching is pathetic. The guy took over a program that only won 13 games over four years. It takes years to recover from that history. Sure Fresno State turned it around but that program hadn’t suffered over four years of poor coaching, recruiting and leadership.

Given his positive community approach and linking the team to local traditions and values, Rolo passes all the necessary measures to revitalize the UH football program. Whining over this season’s disappointment are for losers … supporting the positives of Rolo’s approach will lead us back to winning seasons.

    9.

    Thank you for writing that.

I have this argument with friends at work practically every week.

Because I don’t look like a “moke”, they don’t take me seriously.

You have to bet stupid amounts of money to be taken seriously at my place of employment.

I think Navy is slumping because the starting QB fell in love with his stats and didn’t want to share the ball.

Sort of like a shoot first, pass second point guard.

    But I’m not a hater.

Anything is better than the pro-set.

  14. Former rainbow believer November 30, 2017 9:01 pm

Rolo is one of the coaches that I wanted. He just doesn’t have good coaches under him. All coaches that never really coached as offensive or defensive cordinator. Lempa leaving and the offensive coach leaving hurt. I hope he gets new offensive and defensive coach who can recruit. Need better talent to win. To bad for this year with so many injuries. Headcoach has to be a good leader not just a coach.

  15. Old Diver November 30, 2017 9:03 pm

Is there any word if Matlin is going to extend Rolo’s contract by another year? Not doing so would indicate Rolo has year three to turn things around or it’s over for him.

  16. seewhy November 30, 2017 10:31 pm

    RE: #14

Coach Rolovich’s term is a 4 year appointment from Nov. 30, 2015 to Nov. 29, 2019. And an extension clause stats that if the team participates in a bowl game in either year 1 or 2 of the current contract, the appointment is extended by one year. So since the team went to a bowl game last year, Rolovich has been granted a 5th year.

recruiting classes — seems that nearly every recruiting class only a few, if any, play as true freshman

thus, last year and this years classes will not be fruitful until 2019 and beyond.

with Dru Brown as #1, I don’t see a winning season before 2020 — however, wishing that I’m very wrong on my prediction.

one very obvious thing is that UH WRers, the past 4-5 years have great difficulty getting separation from whomever is defending them — any special reason why?

  18. A-House December 1, 2017 7:38 am

bottom line for finances is ticket sales — anything else that’s done to attract attention to the program, but does not increase ticket sales is ?????????????

unquestionably Hawaii is culturally different than any program on the mainland — however, it takes winning games to attract the faint of heart to buy tickets and they are not cheap — at $30-$40 a pop, a family of 4 needs to spend $120 for tickets only and then the “jacked-up” prices for food and drink

does the Stadium Authority or concessionaire set food/drink prices?
