I know you probably copied and pasted from a UH release, but you might want to tell them to correct their release — I don’t think “OCSports will be broadcasting live from Minnesota”. lol!
From the same article on the HawaiiAthletics’ site: “-UH holds an all-time record of 8-1 against Illinois and is 4-0 against the Illini in the post-season. Their last meeting was in the 2009 NCAA Tournament Stanford Regional when UH defeated Illinois in four sets.” Yup, and that was 8 years ago.

32. cindy so stan sheriff was in serious talks of hawai’i had sights on the then pac 10. so why didnt that happen?
as for ‘big west expansion’ i guess for arguments sake though bakersfield may be another bottom of the league but this year they still won the wac conference and are in the big dance – for now. as for sac state, irvine dominated and owned them easily. and check out their 5 set win vs pacific. good riddance to them leaving pcaa/big west right?
all kidding aside, why does the big west want more bottom feeders or weak teams? even for uc san diego, sure their academic prestige is wonderful but their athletics not so much, they are at the bottom of DII and they want to move up to DI? thats a joke. sure the mens team may be in big west now and previously mpsf but they were and still are at the bottom of the league.
however, i wouldnt mind for recruiting sake have uc san diego, if it were up to me i say we take bakersfield but ditch davis (that team maybe no slouch but is always at the bottom of rpi) and instead have ucsd take their place – geographically would be awesome for big west leaving it all in socal and of course – ripe for hawai’is taking.
6. Not sure where you got the impression that UCSD athletics is “at the bottom of DII.” Actually UCSD has one of the top DII athletic programs. This is from the UCSD press release about joining the Big West:
“With the transition to Division I, UC San Diego will build upon a solid foundation of academic and athletics excellence, having been consistently ranked among the top seven Division II programs in the country on 11 different occasions in the annual Directors’ Cup standings. In 2016, the Tritons placed third in the nation and have twice been named national runner up.
“The 23-sport program has captured 30 national championships, 43 teams have finished as national runners-up and 48 others have achieved national third-place honors. With 251 national, regional and conference championships, and 138 national individual championships, UC San Diego student-athletes have also earned 36 prestigious NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships and 78 Academic All-America selections.
“The Tritons have ranked first among all Division II institutions in the last eight National Collegiate Scouting Association Power Rankings, which comprehensively measure student-athlete graduation rates, academic strength and athletic prowess. UC San Diego has also been honored with the NCAA Division II Presidents’ Award for Academic Excellence.”
Just for context, there are currently 305 American and Canadian colleges and universities classified as DII for NCAA competition. Also, 7 schools are in the process of reclassifying from DIII to DII.

IMO, UCSD has a more vibrant athletic program than UH. UCSD has 12 men’s programs, while UH has the NCAA D1 minimum of 7. UCSD men’s programs that UH does not participate in are cross country, fencing, rowing, soccer, track & field and water polo. The women’s programs match up about the same, except for fencing and rowing, sports that the UH Wahine do not participate in, but the Wahine participate in sailing. They’re a good addition to the Big West. I wonder the level of their facilities? Better than UH? Better financed? And, their student population in 2016 was 35.821; UH in 2016 18,056. Hummm.
And the Triton women’s volleyball completed their 2017 season 16-10 overall; 10-7 conference.
UCSD is a good addition. Good market, good recruiting base, good school, noses a little high in the air so they’ll be fun to beat. Bakersfield on the other hand, is blue collar all the way and will always have a little chip on their shoulder. Overlook them and they’ll make you pay.
First 4 to 8 years I expect BW will take some RPI hit. But change is always in the air. Eventually, the P5 conferences seem destined to extend the financial gap between themselves and the mid-majors, and tournaments like the NIVC are being established (re-established) to handle the growing gap. If the gap gets to be too much, the P5 may break away and the mid-majors may be glad to see them depart.
As much as the gap is widening; as much as the P5 fans thumb their noses at the Group of Five, they need the punching bags to hone their game before conference starts. It’s a balance the NCAA has to juggle.

what happened about Pac-10? Sheriff died.
personally think UCSD has been a very good DII program.
when people mention more Triton sports programs than UH, it is because the football numbers skew what happens for the rest of men’s sports. UCSD doesn’t have football so their gender equity numbers mean they can have more men’s teams.
17 on Ah Mow-Santos’ generosity. Shoji did it every year as well, usually bring redshirts along to get the experience of the NCAA atmosphere.
