Allen named to MW first team

Dejon Allen continued his remarkable week with his selection to the Mountain West first team for football.

Allen, who completed his UH eligibility in the past Saturday’s regular-season finale, was named the Warriors’ offensive MVP at the team banquet on Saturday. Allen also has accepted an invitation to play in the Jan. 20 East-West Shrine Game in Florida.

Diocemy Saint Juste, who set UH’s regular-season record for rushing yards, and middle linebacker Jahlani Tavai were named to the second team.

Defensive end Meffy Koloamatangi and defensive tackle Viane Moala received honorable mention.

The big omission was safety Trayvon Henderson, who was shut out despite being regarded as one of the Warriors’ top prospects for the 2018 NFL Draft. Henderson will compete in the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., in January.

Hoping that Dejon has a long and distinguished career in the NFL.

  3. Warbow November 29, 2017 10:34 am

What happened to Hendersen this year, all MWC pre season pick? The Rolo excuse makers will say injuries, but I say it was coaching that threw him under the bus. Yoro needs to get packing.

Good for our all stars! Hard work pays off!

Had a chance to meet and speak with Dejon a couple of times and have to say that he moves like a good athlete. Saw him take the stairs once he was dancing down them. I second your remarks, turfwar!

I’m Taking Predictions For The MW Championship who You Got Fresno Or Boise ??

And what teams do you have going to which bowl.

Come on guys we can talk about other teams in other conference but can’t talk about our conference teams.

  7. A-House November 29, 2017 12:46 pm

perhaps the 2 most disappointing things about UH 2017 season is the decision to NOT play other QBs on a regular basis and their defensive scheme allowing the middle to be wide open

was it so important the DSJ attain the most rushing yards in a season and not regularly substitute during the season? individual stats more important than winning games?

the lack of depth due to injuries can be partially attributed to the replacement players not trained to step up as needed? is it not a position coaches responsibility to train ALL players?

will the HC make staff changes after the early signing period or will we, fans, be faced with the same staff and hope that they can make significant changes before game #1? or, will it dry up on the vine and see a new HC for 2019?

what will the future bring, I wonder?

  8. A-House November 29, 2017 12:49 pm

we agreed to attend the Hawaii Bowl only if UCF is one of the teams — unlikely as they will be tapped for a higher paying bowl nearer to Florida

did the UCF coach accept another job at a Power5 conference?

I hope Tavai gets an honest assessment of his possible draft position because in my opinion he is not the complete product that we all can see he should be. He needed some help and there will be a lot more for him next year if he chooses to stay. As the season went on he became less a playmaker and more of a guy left to clean up the ‘mess’ left by the scheme. Poor thing for him. Some scouts might not know how good he actually is. He can show them his full potential next year. I think he can make big plays (like Tinoisamoa, Aaron Brown, Parades) and has the ability to blow up runners (like Chris Brown and Blaze Soares) but we didn’t get to see it because there was a lot of pressure on him just to get the sure tackle, especially because the secondary was so bad at tackling. A medium big JC LB would be nice to recruit (especially while breaking in Paul Scott) so Tavai can be positioned anywhere he is mismatched. With the maturation of Mautautia and the addition of two 300 pound plus interior guys I am optimistic. I just hope he stays.

  11. H-Man November 29, 2017 3:14 pm

Listening to coach Rolo on Call the Coach, he seemed to indicate he is not contemplating any coaching changes “at this time,” but maybe some shuffling. Interior DL big-body types, this does not look like an area of urgency. Besides Samuela Akoteu and Viane Moala, there’s Anthony Mermea (6-4/300) and Doug Russell (6-5/300) that were recruited last season. Tristan Nichols/Arizona Western (6-4/295) is a solid commit and may be one of the early signees. Baraka Beckett (6-4/275) is another commit.

A-House, Navy and Coaches Niumatololo and Jasper may be one of the teams paired with a MWC team

  13. BigWave96744 November 29, 2017 4:11 pm

I’m beginning to think the staff will remain the same with 2 new position coaches being added and Dru will be the starter in 2018.

Setting my expectations low so I won’t be anymore disappointed in 2018

  14. Buffoman November 29, 2017 4:24 pm

I mentioned that it appeared that Rolo would play a pat hand with his staff and just add the one for Naeole’ s departure and the 10th. That being said, he knows what he’s doing and will assume the results of his decisions..

I also said that it will be an interesting 2018, as he is going to have to really sell the fans that he has all under control. There are a bunch of folks who feel change is necessary, but we are just fans.

    Howzit Everybody,

    Long time no blog.
Anyway, I highly doubt the coaching staff stays the same going into 2018. Besides the shuffling of duties, I think there maybe some staff members leaving on their own. Don’t know who it might be, but there is always one or two that leave for more green.

Also I definitely agree with those that say the offense needs to be opened up and the defensive schemes need to get tighter. I’m a football guy and it was pretty sickening watching the product put on the field this year. Besides all the disciplinary stuff (which as a former football coach is unacceptable to me) the team just did not look like they wanted to be there and as a paying spectator, that is just not acceptable. Being that I put most of my expendable income into buying season tickets and pay-per-view, I would hope that the least these young men and coaches could do is put a product on the field that can compete. I’ll be back for more next year but I truly hope that Nick, the coaches, and players can get things together.

It is very interesting reading the posts. So many different perceptions of what is wrong, what needs fixing, and some with the solutions for the fix.

Did anyone mention that you can’t fix a thin cupboard?
It takes nearly 4 years to properly staff the ranks and file. You don’t pull a rabbit out of an empty hat do you?

Could any of us been able to curb the growing number of injuries?
    Could anyone have?

As it is, these were galliant young men who were thrown into the fire time and again. Often volunteering to “go back in” in spite of some debilitating injury. It’s one thing to play hurt, but, it’s really something to say “put me in coach i’m Ready to play” all the while playing injured.

    …nuff said!

  17. Arcumfortis November 29, 2017 5:22 pm

It was a very disappointing year. The program is on the verge of a death spiral as the community of fans is fatigued with watching a losing and unentertaining product. It was painful to watch many games this year. Season ticket sales will undoubtedly be down next year. For Rolo and the program next year is critical. If there is no obvious improvement in the product on the field I am very pessimistic about the future of UH football.

  18. z November 29, 2017 7:26 pm

I know we had a lot of injuries but it was early on that I saw that we had a lot of problems with our defense. I felt then that we would have to score a lot to win games. But we all saw how that went. Still I think that our passing game will be much improved next season barring injuries. We just need to replace our 2 runningbacks. I also hope that we will have other quarterbacks ready to go if our number one whoever it is is having a bad game. Players can have a bad game. It happens.

  19. Not Sean November 29, 2017 8:22 pm

I have no worries that we will lose any coaches to greener pastures….nobody’s going to hire them.
Sorry to go against your post, Kama Krab.

  20. burro sabio November 29, 2017 8:43 pm

al you need a lamp so you can search like Diogenes for educated football fans.

  21. What? November 29, 2017 9:12 pm

I think the cupboard is thin or bare is a reason that has been used for the last decade. Their sub .500 record is proof of that. I think what most people want to see is what you do with the players you have and making the most of the talent you have on the team.

If the run and shoot or the triple option gives you the best chance of winning with lesser talent, why not go with the offense that can produces points? Wagner with Paul Johnson did well with the triple option. I use to think it was a gimmick offense and I would rather see a more conventional offense that most teams use. But, who cares what offense UH uses. If the team wins, it doesn’t matter. Other teams don’t see it that often. So why not use it.

The school or the state will not fund the football program to keep pace with the other teams in the mwc. If that’s the case, make the most of the talent pool Hawaii can attract.

I mean how many people believe UH can be consistent winners like Boise State year after year for 20 years? If that is your goal that is unrealistic. Football cost money and the school or the state doesn’t have it or is willing to spend that kind of money. The attendance this year said it all regarding the interest of UH football in this state. Football is something to do on Saturdays if you have nothing else to do. And, that’s okay also because this is just entertainment and the football players are student athletes. A lot of them will get their degrees and most of them will never play football again after college careers are over.

I listened to the call the coach show on Tuesday. It sounds like the early signing in December can help with getting the players they need.

  22. Akamai Okole November 29, 2017 9:51 pm

A sure sign of the depth, or lack of it, can be seen in the special teams.

  23. kev-1 November 29, 2017 10:02 pm

As disappointed as I am with the way the season played out, I am thinking that holding true with the coaching staff (at least the coordinators) may be the best way to go. A revolving door of coordinators does not produce results. If Rolo has faith in his staff that they can turn it around with another year of consistency, then he will have to hang his hat on next year’s results.

  24. kev-1 November 29, 2017 10:03 pm

I will say that there MUST be a QB change. Dru had his second year and showed tremendous regression. Don’t be fooled by his completion percentage. Look at the route tree that he completes passes. Dink, dunk, slant.

  25. kev-1 November 29, 2017 10:11 pm

And I don’t get the debate about why Rolo doesn’t think the run-n-shoot will work. You don’t need to run a pass heavy scheme on every play to open up the offense. You can go with what the flow of the game dictates. But the fear of implementing too much of a passing attack is ridiculous. That is what Hawaii needs. We will never be able to match the size and quickness of our opponents. It was the scheme that helped Hawaii be successful during the JJ years. And lets not forget that UH was still successful during the McMackin years too with the same offense.

  26. SteveM November 29, 2017 11:09 pm

Kev-1 — I recall JJ himself sayin that the “pure” run-n-shoot will not work anymore and he had made adjustments. We never saw the adjustments unless he implemented them at Kapolei high.

I have faith that Rolo, who was the QB in JJ’s offense, played in NFL Europe, and studied the Pistol at Nevada would have some hybrid passing attack in mind. No, I don’t understand throwing for 3 yards when you need 12 hoping for YAC.

Rolo’s experience with the running game might be a bit too recent. DSJ against the defensive box didn’t work so well after the first few games. Maybe knowledge of flexbone, wishbone, Veer, I-formation, and even the Hula-T might have helped DSJ and the bench once in a while. Ifa, coulda, shoulda…

I agree with Al in #16… and as Coach Tomey said, “Never blame the players–blame the coach”.

  27. suckkabooya November 29, 2017 11:24 pm

Boise could do it, why not us? Our fan base is out there somewhere (20000 plus went to the Sugar Bowl) so we need to figure it out from there. UH football needs to prove to the powers that be (Legislature, tax payers, the big Donors and the bandwagon joe fan) that Warrior football is worth investing in. Wahine Volleyball did it (build a consistent winning program) so it can be done here. It seems impossible right now but I remember the days when we scoffed to see Boise on our schedule. It wont happen overnight and it will take max effort, acute outside of the box vision, a more watchable product and the investors trust but… Boise did it. Boise Idaho. We need to figure this (bleep) out.

  28. Old School Dave November 30, 2017 5:50 am

Hawaii’s isolation contributes to a lot of the lagging facilities and lack of resources. Politicians, UH Administrators, the general public (dey only go Vegas) have no idea as far as how behind UH is behind with regards to improved Athletic Facilities. Bobby Curran and John Veneri talked about how USU’s in Logan, Utah (not exactly a popular destination) has leaped ahead of UH in terms of their athletic facilities (new strength & conditioning building, in-door practice facility, football complex, renovated stadium, etc). Still, this all falls on deaf ears, because it’s so far away.

Some fans view the lack of new facilities as simply an excuse (just throw da ball with da Run-N-Shoot and we’ll win!), but I saw a USU team with players that were bigger, faster, stronger, more athletic. On the other hand, I see the same tire looking facilities in the Lower Campus. Give credit to the coaches and players who do with what they have. More can be done, though.

In the meantime, the State gotta spend more money on the Mental Hospital.

  29. Old School Dave November 30, 2017 5:56 am

Hawaii people: “If UH no win, I not going watch dem. I get better things for do with my money.” And when UH wins: “Ah…Aloha Stadium is junk.” “Too far for drive there.” “Da beer is too expensive.” “Takes too long for walk to my seat.” “I no like……..” “We like be entertained, but UH is boring.” Spectators, not Fans!

    # 27, While they seem comparable on the surface, make no mistake about it, they are vastly different. One on overall budget, two, with specific charges for travel, and three, and probably, most importantly, committeemenr from their respective state: see—

Boise State’s $39.4 million athletics budget for fiscal 2018 includes $3.25 million in student fees and $4.88 million in institutional/state support—see here: http://www.idahostatesman.com/sports/college/mountain-west/boise-state-university/article171459337.html#storylin
