Ailments end two Warrior careers

Two players who entered as walk-ons will not get to finish their careers because of physical ailments.

Linebacker Max Broman, who was put on scholarship this past summer, and Terrence Sayles, who worked his way to starting corner and off-set kickoff returner, have completed their UH careers, head coach Nick Rolovich confirmed.

The timing is unfortunate. Broman, who was raised in Utah, will miss a chance to play when the Warriors travel to Utah State next week. For Sayles, who served six years in the Army, he will not be on the field for Military Appreciation Night against Fresno State this Veterans Day weekend.

I though Sayles was just a Junior? He is listed on the UH website as a RS Junior.

If it is the end, good luck to both.

  2. Ipu Man November 8, 2017 10:49 am

Hope their scholarships are not pulled.
Thanks to both for their grit and skills.

  3. A-House November 8, 2017 10:50 am

WOW — this is the first time I’ve heard of this — a player can be “dropped” during the middle of a regular season because his eligibility clock ran out?

was he aware this was a possibility before the season started? did UH know?

  4. NotNasti November 8, 2017 11:03 am

A-House, they are not being “dropped.” ST says the reason is physical ailments (Medical).

  5. Stephen Tsai November 8, 2017 11:06 am

OK, meant to say that Sayles’ UH career is over, apparently.

  6. Stephen Tsai November 8, 2017 11:08 am

Sayles is a junior. He’s not with the team this week. It’s not because of academic or disciplinary reasons.

  7. Old School Dave November 8, 2017 11:31 am

…….and us guys, we still stay hea.

  8. Derek November 8, 2017 12:00 pm

No reasons were given for what ailments. Why the secrecy. Up until now, UH always disclosed what injury or medical reason when a player is out either for games or rest of the season, or career ending.

3 UCLA basketball players arrested in China for shoplifting, including LiAngello Ball.

  10. z November 8, 2017 12:34 pm

Okay now I am soooo confused. 2 players career pau. For somewhat unknown reasons? Not academic, not disciplinary. Ailment? But why?

  11. islandman November 8, 2017 12:39 pm

Broman’s was due to physical ailment, as i read it.

  12. Isleboy November 8, 2017 1:16 pm

This team has so many ISSUES. Reminds me of past
Coach…had a vet who took scholarship ,money and
Never attended class. When requested for pay back…
He quit team middle of season and left state!!

  13. jm2375 November 8, 2017 1:29 pm

Best wishes to Max Broman and Terrence Sayles.

It’s called HIPAA, people. UH isn’t allowed to disclose unless the player allows it.

  15. Old School Dave November 8, 2017 1:36 pm

Yep. Privacy regs and laws involved. But if you still no believe den better call Gina Mangieri. For da peoples who wants to know. Da da daaaa……….

  16. A-House November 8, 2017 1:45 pm

i can understand about Bowman whose career with UH is done because of a medical reason – will presume his scholarship is good to the end of this semester.

but, with Sayles — me keep scratching da head and saying WTHeck — dropping a player mid-season because his eligibility clock expired — is this correct?????? what is missing? can “compliance” person provide an explanation?

were the coaching staff aware of this happening???

  17. A-House November 8, 2017 1:48 pm

#14 — is this why Jerry was absent from the gym??? having a good time in LV and having lunch at the oyster bar?

  18. Akamai Okole November 8, 2017 1:48 pm

    Buckets

  19. Akamai Okole November 8, 2017 1:49 pm

Jerry wasn’t at the gym? o-O

  20. A-House November 8, 2017 1:57 pm

the last winnah of mega bucks was this guy from the Philippines — must have had to “wire” the funds to a bank back home

well, no playing Mega Bucks again until it goes over $11 million — past 4 or 5 trips most I won was 30 credits after putting in a Ben Franklin — not a day, but for the entire trip — das, $500 down da tubes!!

maybe, I should stick to playing table games like craps; let-it-ride; pai gao; black jack — for fun, I like to play the 100 hands video poker 1 penny video poker machine just to past time cause I losing too much.

realized playing 25 cents 3 or 5-card video poker machines can eat up the $$ right quickly

people say play 3-card poker — slow and cannot lose too much — not very lucky with any kind of poker.

    my #19:

can casino legally collect US income tax for a non-resident?

ever hear of a casino issuing a 1099 for large winnings at the crap table? a friend won over $30,000 at one “sitting” at a LV strip casino and they handed him a 1099

  22. A-House November 8, 2017 2:23 pm

    ST:

any additional news/tidbits about 2018 recruiting and/or who will sign on 12/20/2017?

overhear any position coach who is very upbeat about a “red-shirt” player and why?

any “future” news can offset current doldrums

  23. Sangamon Keith November 8, 2017 2:29 pm

I’m confused about comments being made … both players are said to have physical ailments (injuries) that have ended their career. I didn’t find the part about me Sayles eligibility running out … accept one of the first posters making that assertion. Did I miss something?

  24. warriorsanddolphins November 8, 2017 2:39 pm

Alot of things being covered up? I have questions on why is timoteo so deep down the depth chart that he hardly plays. Same for Stubblefield.

  25. BigWave96744 November 8, 2017 3:10 pm

What at Kiko Faalologo, haven’t seen him suited up for a while. Is he dobe due to injury?

    Also will Malachi Mageo play?
I saw if we lose thia week, they should rest him for the season for a complete recovery and be at full strength in 2018

  26. BigWave96744 November 8, 2017 3:15 pm

On a positive note, Kamuela Borden finishes his mission next month and will be able to participate in spring ball and help replace Meffy & Manoa at DE

  27. J-Dog November 8, 2017 3:49 pm

A-House, not sure why you keep posting about Sayles being “dropped”. I don’t recall this being mentioned unless you are privy to some info.

Man, you post some weird comments.

  28. amela November 8, 2017 6:01 pm

College football not allowed to release an injury list?

  29. burro sabio November 8, 2017 6:18 pm

    No

  30. Kev-1 November 8, 2017 7:05 pm

#23 … I been asking about those two receivers for a long time. No news. I don’t get it either. I have been wondering about the contradictions between what Rolo says and who plays for awhile. Just this past coaches show he said something about Kala going to contribute. We’ll see if he even plays.

It’s also possible that Kala plays more than I notice and he just doesn’t get the ball thrown in his direction. I don’t think Dru makes it through very many reads. Pretty sure he is a first read and throw type qb.

  31. islandman November 8, 2017 8:04 pm

Timoteo is listed in the Participation in the Box Score for the UNLV and San Jose St games. I didn’t look back further than those.
Could it be on special teams ?

  32. Kev-1 November 8, 2017 8:32 pm

Pretty sure Timoteo hasn’t seen a target since the UCLA game.

  33. Maddog50 November 9, 2017 3:10 am

Some things are better left unsaid. With suspensions dismissals and various issues better for all to just let it be and move on. Regarding playing time you earn that with effort talent and behavior. Some things have occurred that obviously leave no options other than what has occurred. Take a look at the College football injury report-tons of dismissal and “left team” comment. Privacy laws protect the athlete- wish these two the best. I just want a win! GoWarriors!!!!

  34. Maddog50 November 9, 2017 5:56 am

Picked to finish 2nd in MW division-some team members stated openly goal was to win the conference. Three games just plain given away WYO, NEV, and UNLV. Well past the point for team in totality both Coaches and players to “Play Warrior” ……….Defend Pride Rock. Absolutely can win all three with all out effort and execution. Take a look at where D Browns numbers are-imagine if just half of the passes that hit hands were caught! Imagine if just 25% of miss throws hit the receivers. Execution and amped up effort is critical. GoWarriors!!!!

  35. Paniolo November 9, 2017 6:20 am

Warrior head football coach Nick Rolovich is either still wet behind the ears as a head football coach or is ignorant. He never used his back-up quarterback when the Warriors are behind and not winnable football game this year. I have watch Division one and a few Div two football games on television, if starting quarterback is struggling, bring in the back-up. Not with Rolovich.
Nick Rolovich need to replace his entire staff after the last game of 2017. Bring in an experienced Offensive line coach and coordinator; bring in an experienced Defensive Coordinator and coaches under the DC. Will Rolo replace his entire coaching staff? FAT CHANCE. The results will be another losing year in 2018 and probably the end of University of Hawaii Division one football as hardly anyone would attend a Warrior home game
Rolo is definetley an conservative playbook coach. He refused to open his offensive play book up. If Nick Rolovich does not do all this changes, I am done with Warrior football.

  36. DaveLetterMan November 9, 2017 6:30 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
ST, I’m confused. You’re saying Sayles’ career is done but this morning on BC’s show, Yoro said he’s looking forward to having him next year. He wished he had him longer.

  37. Old School Dave November 9, 2017 6:38 am

Better call Gina Mangieri – because people want to the know. Neva mind privacy laws.

Examples of opening up the playbook and wide open offenses:

  38. graham November 9, 2017 6:55 am

    Good luck to both players

This season has been a huge disappointment, I was expecting a big year. I thought that Rolo would get offers to leave. Boy was I wrong.

  39. Kahuna November 9, 2017 7:22 am

Is it possible that Sayles’ eligibility was found that it will expire after this season and was only discovered recently?

He is not your normal kid out of HS. He was in the military and was in and out of the program He was here during Norm Chow’s tenure so it’s not like Rolo was keeping track of his eligibility clock all along.

How many years he had left is not easy. I also heard there are age limit place on NCAA D1 athletes. I do wonder if Sayles falls into this category.

  40. A-House November 9, 2017 7:27 am

weird comments? no, look beyond the surface — dig deeper.

  41. Derek November 9, 2017 8:15 am

Strange things going on, man! Toro talking to BC this morning about Sayles. Nothing said about any career ending due to ailment. In fact it appeared Sayles still playing and in the mix. What the……!
