Lost weekend

It was a challenging weekend in Las Vegas for the Warriors, who were scheduled to return to Honolulu early this morning.

For a 12-game schedule that featured two byes, the Warriors probably could use a third one. The depth on the offensive line has been tested. The defensive line was without ailing d-tackle Viane Moala this weekend. And yet another inside receiver — tight end Kade Greeley — was not available because of flu-like symptoms.

Kudos to center Taaga Tuulima for stepping in at center, and for guard John Wa‘a for re-entering to provide leadership.

But the Warriors will need more production if they wish to keep alive their thinning post-season hopes.

Bows still played em close. Stick together for the final run.

Armchair coach says that we should have had the hands team in when they kicked off following our penalty. Changed momentum big time.
    Go Bows!!

  3. H-Man November 5, 2017 8:23 am

To me, the Hawaii Bowl went out the window when they lost at Nevada. The loss at UNLV put the nail in the coffin. With so many injuries and the Warriors still having to face Fresno St, Utah St and BYU, I see the season ending with a 3-9 record. I know the players will play hard. I will go to the games at Aloha Stadium, But sorry, the coaching staff has not assembled, nor scripted, a winning template.

  4. Kev-1 November 5, 2017 8:37 am

The losing streak does not boil down to the injuries. More attention should be paid to the dropped passes by receivers and poor throws by the quarterback. Some people need to stop giving this offense a pass. The offensive line has done fine even with all of the injuries.

  5. Kev-1 November 5, 2017 8:47 am

I’m also very confused by the rotation of receivers. One week, Rolo says Bernard should be starting. The next, he’s not even on the field. I also have a hard time believing that Timoteo has fallen off that much to not get playing time all year.

I wish the local sports coverage would shed more light on why some players are playing and others not. I’m not just wondering out of nowhere. A lot of the questions I haver are due to the contradictions that Rolo makes in his call the coach and coaches show.

  6. What? November 5, 2017 9:11 am

At this point a 5-7 season would be an accomplishment. But, 3-9 is the most likely outcome.

This team does not look like a winning team. Whether it’s the coaches, the players or a combination of both, this team finds a way to lose.

The onside kick at the 50 yard line was a momentum swing for UNLV. Did the coaches just assume UNLV would kick it out of the endzone?

Post season? Their postseason will be watching other teams play in bowl games.

  7. islandman November 5, 2017 9:26 am

UH is averaging 21.7 pts in the MW conference games, not enough to win most games. That average is only ahead of New Mexico and San Jose St.

  8. z November 5, 2017 9:40 am

Got to give it to UNLV coaches. They saw that we used a dlineman on the kick return and onside kicked the ball to him. Funny getting caught like that after using our own version to catch them sleeping. I actually thought that Rolo was going to call a time out after seeing UNLV line up. So far this season it seems as tho teams are really prepared when they face us. We just seem struggle with our execution.

  9. Sangamon Keith November 5, 2017 10:08 am

On paper, we stil have a chance but both Fresno State and Utah State are relatively hot. Of course BYU is off to a terrible start this season … so we get chance.

It was frustrating to see a slow start again from the offense. If the had executed as well as they did later in the game, we’d probably would be happier to day. Unfortunately, it seems that we’re now DSJ one-dimensional at the star since none of the other teams have or will be taking Dru Brown or our wideouts seriously at this point.

  10. clyde November 5, 2017 10:17 am

z @ 8: Totally agree with your points. Unfortunately, that D-lineman was playing in only his ninth game of American football, so can’t lay the blame on him (plus, I really like his potential). Once UNLV split 4 and 5 wide to each side of the field, a timeout or some frantic sideline instructions to move players up or at least make them aware might have helped. Instead it appeared coaches and players were caught flat-footed. A bit of a gamble on UNLV’s part as I doubt the playbook calls for an automatic onside kick in that situation, but it paid off big time.

  11. Derek November 5, 2017 12:09 pm

You can make a lot of excuses or reasons why things have not gone well of our Warriors, many of which are quite valid. But, you know what, nobody outside of Hawaii gives a hoot about us that we’re struggling. That fact is, we are 3-6 going on 3-9. At this point in the season, we wouldn’t even beat UMass which played Tennessee and Miss. St. tough and they also won 2 games the last month. Let’s count the ways shall we, fans may have other good ideas.
    1. Dru Brown has regressed based on his play. True or False?
    2. Not having Gifford, Tulimasealii, and Tago hurt the depth on the defensive line? True or False?
    3. We haven’t replaced Marcus Kemp at wideout who was the only consistent deep threat. True or False?
4.. After we lost Ursua for the rest of the season, things in the passing game pretty much went south? True or False?
    5. The play calling hasn’t been good and is a big head scratcher? True or False?
    6. We haven’t replaced Rigo Sanchez’s talent, producton and efficiency? True or False?
    7. Has the coaching staff been doing a good job? True or False?
    a. In coaching the players?
    b. In recruiting?
    c. On game day situations?
8.. UH’s tackling is good, or very good? True or False?
    9. It appears the UH offense is not exciting? True or False?
    10. Defensively, we don’t have an effective pass rush? True or False.

It was tough to watch how we lost. It was, to me, a very winnable game. We are missing a playmaker QB who can do a lot of things to move the chains and score. The QB has to make things happen. All you have to do is to look around the country who are having good teams, and not only throwing the ball too. The Army QB Bradshaw hardly throws the ball, but runs that offense so well and they are winning, now 7-2. Heck, last nights Kahuku-Mililani OIA championship game was so exciting and made the UH games actually boring by comparison. I long for the day that once again, UH plays the kind of football I once enjoyed. The days of 2006 and 2007, the days of 1989-1990, 1992, the Tomey tough defense, the Nogas, the Odoms, the Owens, the Gabriel’s, the Branch, the Sydners, the Rolos, the Changs when points were plentiful and fans would flock to the stands. I’m a senior now and I’m slow and I feel and old man. But my mind still knows what it’s like to see some exciting football. Oh my goodness!

As someone said, I think it was Al, that we need to get that one player who will take us to the top. The Holy Grail. I assume that he was talking about a QB, because he is the most important position on a football team. Colt Brennan was that person for UH. You can possibly say that maybe McKenzie Milton is that person who could have made the difference for UH. The teams are different for sure, but it appears that Milton is that person to Central Florida based what he’s doing. My apologies to Al if it wasn’t you. So, UH is still searching since 2007. I don’t know if there is someone in the program who is or if one of the recruits that have committed is the one. All I know is that that person will have to perform on the field and do it and we will all know then. But, it’s not one person to be successful. It’s a whole team, but that one person is the one that takes it over the top, a championshp. So Rolo, keep looking and coaches, keep looking, and get lucky.

I hope those big donors who threaten to not donate if Ben Jay didn’t change the name back “Rainbows” about 5 years ago. Are willing to pay $ for the declining attendance and interest from 30,000+ as Hawaii Warriors to around half that as Rainbows. The lack of talent on the depth chart is directly attributed to recruiting pitch as “Rainbow” the past 5 years to Mainland recruits.

Rolo got a bad deal following Ben Jay, Norm Chow and those complaining big time donors take Hawaii Football down to Junior college level program. Rolo you need to save your job by changing the name back to Hawaii Warriors for recruiting, figure out who on the coaching staff needs changing.

The Rainbows might be able to steal 1 (BYU) of the last 3 games but the Bows will most likely keep on track and have another non-winning RAINBOW Season. We Hawaii Warrior fans would like to thank those whining big donors for aiding in the decline of UH Football recruiting talent, loss of attendance and TV interest. Keep up the good work, Go Bows.

  31. Old Diver November 5, 2017 4:41 pm

Watching the replay it appeared the reason Rolo did not call a timeout on the UNLV onside kick is because he was not focused on the play. Seconds after UNLV recovered the kick the camera focused on Rolo who appeared to be concentrating on which play to call. He looked up then looked to someone standing next to him and you could see him ask “How did they get it?” Check out the replay if you still have it.

  32. z November 5, 2017 7:25 pm

Can someone ask Coach Rolo why Posa takes a hop a at the snap of the ball?

  33. Warrior Dave November 5, 2017 7:47 pm

    #31,

Rolo isn’t calling offensive plays. It’s primarily being done by Brian Smith as OC, and I think Stutz as QB Coach

  34. Maddog50 November 5, 2017 8:31 pm

Lotsa negatives and certainly no excuses…….the depth chart is thin at a number of positions. Injuries abound and guys like John Waa playing hurt. This game like two others were gifted that makes a three total. You can certainly look to a number of things. The QB Stanton is clearly the reason UNLV won the last few games. Right now we need to manufacture a win or two and recruit to the needs-OL DL Receivers and DBs. Coach Rolovich certainly has my support and will succeed. BTW the onside kick is on the Special teams coach-

  35. azwarrior22 November 5, 2017 8:33 pm

I made the road trip and I was very disappointed. UNLV made the first downs when they needed to. And how the heck did we get victimized by an onside kick. We couldn’t pressure their QB or defend their tall receivers. Our defense is continually gets torched.

And our offense is almost non-existent. The only time we moved the ball is when we passed first to set up the run. I think the QB competition needs to be re-opened.

A lot of changes needs to be made and it should start with both the DC and OC.

We can’t beat the beatable teams so how do we expect to go bowling?

  36. z November 5, 2017 9:22 pm

Watched game again. Can’t really blame the OC. A lot of plays were there to be made. Players need to execute. Seems like all of our receivers dropped passes in the game. The plays in the endzone was there. Dropped passes, holding penalty, offsides really hurt this team. But we where still able to march down the field and almost tie the game. I was surprised at how much time our oline was able to give Dru. Maybe a foot or 2 lower the pass would have been caught then we would still have to go for 2.

  37. H-Man November 5, 2017 9:34 pm

Let’s not fool ourselves, this is Nick Rolovich’s offense. The OC is tasked to execute the game plan.

  38. Old DIver November 5, 2017 10:20 pm

#33 Rolo could have been ordering pizza, who called that play is not the point.

  39. What? November 5, 2017 11:34 pm

This is Rolo’s offense and this is his team. At the end of his tenure, he will also be judged by win’s and losses. This is his 2nd year with a record of 10-13 with a Hawaii Bowl win. It might not be the greatest. But, after seeing Chow, this is an improvement. Actually, after Von Appen, every other coach is an improvement.

  40. Maddog50 November 6, 2017 3:44 am

With three games left I just want some wins! I am also very excited about the future of those underclass men on the team and this next recruiting class. Tuulima and Trifinovich both gained extremely valuable game time and performed well. I was up close to both Kipper and Vanderpool, we need about six more guys like that. I was at the game and knowing what I knew my expectations were tempered-surprisingly if you did not see the improvement on Defense, well it was there. Stanton at QB makes plays few in this conference can make-big mistake by pulling him from QB ranks early on. UNLV is far from special-they have a few playmakers who made a few plays, that was the difference. Right now we don’t have a playmaker with Ursua out we don’t have one. DSJ could be a weekly threat if we had the health and depth upfront. Still excited very much so about the future with at least 15 or so redshirt freshman-think we have good ones coming and more to find. It’s gonna be just fine-

  41. cappie the dog November 6, 2017 4:25 am

4-8 is pretty ugly, but it’s more wins than both Norm Chow and Fred Von Appen ever produced in a season.

Most likely, they won’t beat Utah State at Logan, if they can’t beat somewhat hapless UNLV.

    Fresno State or BYU?

    BYU.

Ty Detmer returns to the land of 59-28.

    Jeff Sydner.

Aside from striking a Heisman pose in the end zone, what I remember most about him is that he said, “Let’s win a National Championship,” at a press conference, and expressing his disappointment by all the funny looks he was receiving.

    He declared early.

    And it actually worked.

Unlike (insert name here, I forgot it), our last great kickoff returner, who ended up being cut by the Jets. I remember he scored in a pre-season game.

  42. cappie the dog November 6, 2017 4:34 am

If Hawaii wants to be truly competitive in college football, they either have to sell its soul and cheat(and I don’t think Coach Rolovich is the guy), or run the flex-bone(or the spread).

You’re not going to win consistently in the SEC running the triple-option, but you surely can in the West side of the Mountain West Conference.

  46. clyde November 6, 2017 7:23 am

One week a lot is made about Isaiah Bernard giving the team a deep threat. The next week he doesn’t get on the field. Did Bernard even make the trip? Is he injured? That said, nice to see Kumoku Noa make the most of his opportunity.

  47. A-House November 6, 2017 7:38 am

    WR/Slot separation from DBs:

what is the problem? is it the coaching or players or both?

speed – yes, speed is great, but a commodity UH does not have.

i turn again to Jerry Rice who had 4.6 speed, but his success is separating from a DB was great

concentration by offense and defense lacking again with dropping balls, miss assignments, penalties, etc.

does UH have mediocre coaches and players? yes, most play hard and give 100%, but there are those who seem to not care

yet, we will be there next Saturday nite!

  48. islandman November 6, 2017 7:54 am

The defense played well in the 1st half, except for the opening TD. Also in the 3rd quarter.
Today’s article said that UH received the penalty of 15 yds leading to UNLV’s onside kick because a UH player vaulted a teammate to try to block a point-after kick. Nick is waiting for an interpretation from the MW office. I think that was the one that radio announcer Bobby said the official called the penalty for “leverage” .
Rolovich said he should have called for timeout on that kickoff, in hindsight.
Trifonovitch kicked good, hope he continues like that. Last year, Rigo had only one time he kicked 3 FG’s in one game.

  49. islandman November 6, 2017 7:57 am

    45. The box score play by play says it was T. Henderson ( personal foul). Vaulting, i think

  50. Derek November 6, 2017 8:13 am

Where are the commitments? Only 8 now. Letter of Intent early signing is Dec. 17. You talk about how many offers UH have made, over 80, maybe more by now. The majority of teams will surely have their commitments locked up early and the majority of the best players will sign early. If you get players signed in February you will get some good players, but many recruits signed late will be reaches or lower rated players, at best 2 star players or not rated at all. The last 4 star player we got is probably Ulu-Perry and he’s a transfer from UCLA.

  51. Maddog50 November 6, 2017 9:05 am

According to one recruiting ranking report we are # 7 in the MW with 8 commits. Some teams in the conference have less than that with a few that report only 4. As the recruiting carousel turns I would imagine that by the early signing date things will ramp up to at least a dozen or so. The early signing date is an option all will not exercise. I am sure we are still lining up a bunch of visits.

What are the safeties looking at? It happens over and over.

  53. A-House November 6, 2017 10:40 am

perhaps, as Maddog50 posted — there is some hope in the current RS frosh who can make a significant impact in 2018 and perhaps one or two true frosh who will be able to start

hope coaches are not bent on hell to play “upper class” over someone who has much to offer in 2018

each time I watch other schools play, there are true frosh or RS frosh who are starting over the ‘older’ players — perhaps they are an exception — remember the true frosh at Utah State who displaced a Hawaii player who came back to UH? — forgot his name, but he was good

for whatever reason, and this is my opinion only, UH like the 49ers do not recruit black QBs and there are talented ones out there — back in the days, UH had very good black QBs

  54. A-House November 6, 2017 10:52 am

last Saturday we went to see the Wahine VB last home game — it’s been a long time since we last watched a game in the The Stanley

I wanted to see Sky Williams play, but she has been regulated to the bench since she played in the first few games — remember her name mentioned as having excellent games when we were on the East Coast in late August.

UH and Long Beach State do not have the “hammers” like they did in the 80’s and Misty May used to kill us
