Video reviews start off road-trip week

If it’s Monday, it’s video reviews and conditioning drills for the Warriors, who are looking to break even in the Mountain West.

At 1-4 in the MW, the Warriors need to win their final three league games. Two of those games will be on the road, beginning with Saturday’s showdown against UNLV.

The Warriors are hopeful of getting back linebacker Malachi Mageo sometime this season. He still is awaiting medical clearance from an ACL injury suffered in the spring. But Mageo is able to run, and he has been helpful carrying and loading equipment bags after games. The Warriors miss his toughness and football knowledge. Because Mageo already red-shirted as a freshman in 2014, he cannot count this season as medical redshirt to prolong his UH career past the 2018 season. Translation: He needs to play or else he loses this season.

Running back Melvin Davis, who is recovering from a knee injury, can count this as a medical redshirt because he missed last year because of health issues. A player who has missed consecutive seasons because of health reasons are eligible for medical redshirt considerations.

must wonder what the UH coaching staff sees in recruits that they are willing to offer scholarships

what are the “must” have characteristics? how do you measure “heart and desire”? who do you talk to? are they so cast in concrete that they cannot change?

why? seem like so many scholarship players cannot break free of whatever level/status they are in now — surely, they are coach-able and willing to learn — if not, why keep them on the team?

recent tweets in next column — take UNLV and give the points as UH will be hapless, again! combine this with another game to make a “4-team parley”

  4. cappie the dog October 30, 2017 2:53 pm

UNLV is 120th in rushing defense.

Handing the ball off to Dioceme St. Juste ad infinitum stands a better chance of working against the Rebels, as opposed to SDSU, who was in the top fifty.

I wish Hawaii fans would have the heart and desire…
But alas, when the going gets tough,
    The Hawaii fans get going.
    Auwe.

    Go Warriors!

  6. islandman October 30, 2017 3:15 pm

4… Hope so, their rushing defense averages 234.6 yds per game.
But Fresno got only 140 yds rushing and 152 passing vs UNLV and could only score 2 TD’s and 1 FG for 16 measly pts.

  7. z October 30, 2017 3:24 pm

I hope we can get Mageo back. We need his toughness.

  8. UH4eva October 30, 2017 3:35 pm

Hang in there. We are waiting to support you in Las Vegas. We have been waiting for a Warrior win in Vegas for years. Go Warriors!

    6. Judging by the lack of predicted final scores, I thought “Hawaii Nation” had already arrived at a near-consensus that SDSU was going to be an automatic loss.

Hawaii should be competitive against the Rebels.

    It’s a revenge game.

The offense was working, relatively speaking, up until last week’s game.

  10. islandman October 30, 2017 5:52 pm

    9. Sports Animals mentioned Red Zone offense stats.
UH is ranked No. 123 out of 129 teams in Red Zone Offense Pct or 70 %. Last in the MWC.
UH has had 30 red zone attempts. UNLV has had 32 and scored 90.6 % of the time.
    ————————————————————————–
UNLV running back Lexington Thomas is averaging 7.0 yards per carry.

  11. H-Man October 30, 2017 7:34 pm

There’s some good data posted today. Interesting match-up between the Rebels and Warriors. But with three starting Warrior O-Linemen dinged up, I’ll call it for the Rebels, 31-24.

And the negative fan reaction is not because the Warriors lost, but the way they lost – no clue by the coaching staff on how to break open the running game. And since they were “out physicaled” they must have just given up.

  12. burro sabio October 30, 2017 8:03 pm

This is the money difference: Randy Shannon had Robb Akey in reserve as a quality control coach and elevated him to full-time defensive line coach. We had to elevate a graduate assistant.

  13. islandman October 30, 2017 8:22 pm

UNLV is 23rd in red zone offense at 90.6 %. They have 11 FG’s to UH’s one FG in the red zone.
    Alabama is 25th at 90.5 %.

  14. Kev-1 October 30, 2017 9:58 pm

ST … Thank you for explaining the medical redshirt situation for Mageo. I was wondering about that.

So a recent blog started off regarding the health of 3 OL. I really don’t have any right to know but am curious as to the status. Today is the first day back at practice so maybe we will know-I think both UNLV and Fresno are average teams……right now I can’t really say how we will fare. One thing UNLV has been very porous on defense both run and pass. Our D improved last week but UNLV has an RB two receivers and a couple of quarterbacks who have different skills-the D is gonna have to play inspired to say the least. I hope we have some surprises for the Rebels-that have a difficult time with the read option and I mean difficult. Think this will come down to TOP and who has the ball last-I’ll be there in support-

  16. H-Man October 31, 2017 3:57 am

Maddog, I like what you wrote because you have taken a very objective view of the upcoming game. But as for the read-option, the way Dru has been playing, it does not look like a read-option style offense. Dru has been just handing off the ball to Saint Juste, standing there with his left hand extended. Defenses are not confused about who’s getting the ball and when.

  17. Maddog50 October 31, 2017 5:06 am

H-Man I agree, however there is an option or two on the roster. The only reason I called these two teams just ok, watch a few and you will see. UNLV has some weapons for sure FSU muffed a punt for one of two TDS and a fumble played a role. That being said it will take an effort similar to Wyoming to take this-anything less is not good

  18. islandman October 31, 2017 5:51 am

Average Fresno beat and held SDSU to 27-3 and beat New Mexico 38-0 who beat Air Force 56-38 who beat CSU 45-28 and UNLV by only 34-30 who beat Fresno St. 26-16.

  19. Maddog50 October 31, 2017 6:54 am

Scores of games do not tell the whole story. I happened to watch all those contests BTW FSU throttled SJSU 27-10 and overwhelmed Nev 41-21. Right now we have no room to talk but I stand by my opinion-

  20. cappie the dog October 31, 2017 6:56 am

In Hawaii’s favor: UNLV hasn’t won consecutive games since 2015(Idaho State and at Nevada).

Against consecutive FBS school, you have to go back to 2013(at Air Force, San Diego State).

I’m going to ask my degenerate gambling friend later at work today if this would convince him to take Hawaii.

  21. cappie the dog October 31, 2017 7:02 am

Small victory: Massachusetts has vacated both the “Bottom Ten” and the “Bottom Ten waiting list”.

Small victory #2: Hawaii is not in the “Bottom 10”.

If there was such a thing, Hawaii would be in the “Mediocre 10” poll.

  22. islandman October 31, 2017 7:27 am

Also , an early UH opponent , Western Carolina is ranked in one of the FCS polls.

  23. Inyoface October 31, 2017 7:54 am

We need an ex or current Polynesian pro wrestler to be our new mascot like Vili! The crowd needs to get hyped and entertained between plays, as well as, national attention like Vili did!

  24. Maddog50 October 31, 2017 9:17 am

After having seen the clip of Jahlani numerous times I have but one comment-when I meet him I will nod hello, no way I shake my hand with that vice grip-proud of that young man!!!!

  25. Derek October 31, 2017 10:00 am

One thing UNLV can do is beat UH in Las Vegas. We haven’t won there since Colt Brennan was playing in 2007. So why would this week would be any different. Trust you eyes. We will not win as our defense can’t stop anybody and UNLV have learned that if you stop St. Juste you will stop the UH offense, period. I hate to say it because I want UH to win, but my head says UNLV 40, UH 20. Without our main threat in the passing game in John Ursua, we don’t stand a chance, at all. When it’s all said an done, I predict we will end up the season at 3-9.

Rolo needs to have Cole McDonald or Cole Brownholtz some game action. McDonald is more athletic than Brown and to help St. Juste we need to have the QB run the ball with some read optioon as well as give Tuiasoa more carries. Try throw the ball on 1st down on high percentage passes to give a better chance on 2nd and 3rd downs to pick up the first down. When was the last time we ran a reverse? A double reverse? A backward pass? A shuffle pass? A sweep? A play action pass? An inside hand off? An option to run or pass? We don’t have any imagination on offense it seems. And throwing a 3 to 5 yard pass when you need 7-10 yards to go for a first down don’t make any sense to me. At this point in the season, what do you have to lose. Go for the gusto, man! Practice it in your practices to execute. People don’t go to the games in part because the team is losing, but the team seems to be boring also. And people don’t like to see boring football. You might have watch HD TV football and you can see a lot of games, a lot of very good games. Know what, I just want to see McKenzie Milton and Tua Tagovailoa more than I want to watch UH go 3 and out. Enough! Sorry for venting, but I’m just frustrated as much as people are out there.

  26. SteveM October 31, 2017 10:58 am

    RE: #28
Derek — kinda what I had been saying as an armchair coach. Suggested using others in the I-formation and even have enough talent for a triple option (shudder). Then the pass can really open up.

Better than DSJ right and DSJ left for 3 yards each hoping to break one. Gotta do something different because future opponents now has a lot of game film on how to stop us cold.

Who wants a Dick Tomey book signed in person by Coach in Vegas?
    https://www.bookshawaii.net/rise-of-the-rainbow-warriors.html

Called HZone and said they are bringing about 100+ Dick Tomey books to Vegas, so you should all pick them up early before Friday’s Nakoa event at the California hotel on the 2nd floor (5pm-9pm). The HZone schedule at the Cal hotel (2nd floor) is: Nov 1, 2 & 3; Wed-Fri; 9am to 9pm.

    http://nakoa.org/event-calendar/warrior-bash-vegas/

FYI: Dick Tomey will not be at the Hzone stand but only at the Nakoa event on Friday to sign your book. Coach will not have any books on him to sell; so you need to get them from HZone first.

Coach Tomey told he will also be at the UHAA event ($43 pupu party) at the Cal also on Thursday evening but I haven’t been able to confirm that with anyone at UHAA yet.

There is a possibility that I might not make it there this Friday or Sat–my own conflict with a tennis tournament.

For all those attending this UNLV game; Sam Boyd stadium has a clear bag policy also:

Derek is right–where is the creativity of our offense?

Why don’t we do flare passes to our RB coming out of our backfield (like the NFL) and have them go one on one vs LB”s?

Where is the jet-sweep that kills us when other teams do it to us?

How about modifying the Run-Pass Option to include a WR to come around from the other side to take the outside pitch; after faking the run & QB keep??

  30. Derek October 31, 2017 12:16 pm

While we are talking about this week and the rest of the schedule, early letter of intent signing is just around the corner the middle of December. Most teams have more than half of their commitments locked up. We have 8. From my vantage point we can use a better punter and a better kicker. If we can get a person that can do both, like Sanchez did, that would be great.. Right now, we are losing the kicking game big time. You want to win consistently, we have to have a much better defense. We had tough defensive teams during the Tomey and Wagner years. Since then, not so much. We need a strong front 7 with at least 2 or 3 pass rushers. Haven’t had a good pass rusher since Travis LaBoy. Wouldn’t hurt to have a playmaker dual threat at QB too, ala Milton and Tagovaioa. Dillon Gabriel is someone to watch next season as he continue to grow and get bigger and stronger. He has an offer from Navy. Good genes.

  31. A-House October 31, 2017 12:42 pm

remember the days when UH did a “student body right”, then a “student body left” just like USC back in the 70’s with Gary Allen and Larry Scherrer (sp) carrying the ball

they did it until the “D’ stopped them or the OC decided to run different packages

that was fun because we all knew what was coming and so did the opponents

now, even if the ‘D” stacks the front 8, UH still does “up-da-middle”

win or lose at UNLV, we will be there for Fresno State — unsure how long we will stay

speaking of punters and kickers — is the kicker purposely kicking high and short to allow team mates to go down and make a tackle or is the kicker just no mo leg?

punter was terrible last game — does he have “leg” or purposely doing lousy, short punts?

  33. A-House October 31, 2017 12:53 pm

    Derek:

another way to look at “early signing” or lack thereof means more “walk-ons” will be awarded a scholarship?

yest, it’s best to do it earlier than later and if very successful, the February LOI day will become moot as all available scholarships will have been given
