Filling the slot

It was, of course, devastating for the Warriors to lose slotback John Ursua for the rest of the season because of a torn ACL. He was the leading receiver (7.8 catches per game), accounting for 30.9 percent of the Warriors’ 152 receptions.

But after Ursua departed, the Warriors re-worked the game plan. When Ursua played, Dru Brown threw to three different receivers. In Ursua’s absence, the Warriors ran 69 plays — 52 rushes, 17 passes. The pass distribution went this way: Dylan Collie 6 targets, Ammon Barker 4, Keelan Ewaliko 4, Dakota Torres 1, Diocemy Saint Juste 1, and Isaiah Bernard 1.

Collie, who already had a significant role in the offense as a slot and wideout, will be the featured inside receiver. Even before Ursua’s injury, Kumoku Noa was groomed for a role in the offense. Kalakaua Timoteo III, Davine Tullis and Isaiah Bernard also have practiced at slotback. And tight end Kade Greeley, who did not play this past weekend because of an ailment, should be good to go against San Diego State. Greeley is a precise route runner with dependable hands.

I like this spreading -it-around passing offense. And maybe a little bit more of Ryan Tuiasoa in the running game. Would like to see some of either Freddy Holly or Elijah Dale, if he’s not red-shirting, in a game other than San Diego State.

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Yes, very unfortunate to lose Ursua at this point. Critical juncture for the season. With SDS coming up, we need all hands on deck … literally. Plus side is we do have a good bunch of receivers and it is time to step to the plate.
O-line did well but we do need to spell DSJ a bit. No need for 25 + carries per game. I know he wants the rock but the season is long and we need to keep the boyz healthy too.
Hoping the D will start to light up. Like the light gets turned on and they all get on the same page. No man unaccounted for … is my wish.

Kemp was placed on waivers yesterday. The Chiefs needed a running back.

A player goes down, other[s] gotta step up, it’s their chance to play!! This is a team sport, 85 scholarships, numerous walk ons’, there’s a diamond in the rough waiting to be discovered.

Get chance win 3out5… season in the balance

ST — please ask Rolo if he remembers the “I formation”. If I had a “fullback” like Tuiasoa and a “tailback” like DSJ… exciting run-set-up-the-pass action…

…and tom-warriornation’s suggestion of the triple option with McDonald in the mix is interesting. Old school offenses that we have the personnel for… 🙄

Marcus Kemp is the “Moonlight” Graham of football.

I second the installment of the triple option.

If Garrett Gabriel can run the triple option, so can Dru Brown.

Still no comment on D-Stubb? What’s the scoop on him from the coach?

  15. amela October 17, 2017 9:46 pm

Kaiwi Chung at fullback best blocker to open lanes for DSJ, no doubt.

#15 … “Amela” … I agree … Kaiwi Chung @ FB in the “I” Formation … for short yardage Kaiwi @ FB and Tuiausoa at TB … would give the opponents “D” a different look … with a bye week hope “Rolo” would put some plays like that in as SDSU might not expect it …

  17. What? October 17, 2017 11:32 pm

I think there is a reason the team doesn’t run the I-formation. It is an offense that requires probably a more pro style system. Hawaii tried the pro set system with Chow’s first year and then the offense moved to a more spread offense under Chow. But, the team still kept on losing. Constant changing of the offense will set the team back several years.

The offense Rolo is using is fine. Fix the defense and reduce penalties and Hawaii will win more than they lose.

This is the first time in quite a while that the Warriors have had back to back home games in conference. The bye week should give them time to heal rest and hopefully adjust for SDSU. They will have a chance if the offense comes out playing from the start, the special teams has no breakdowns. As far as the defense goes they will have to stack the box to slow down Penny and the secondary….well that’s another story. The Warriors gave away two games -it’s now time to take one back no matter what the odds. This game will determine the character of this team. I am not an advocate of any wholesale changes-I am an advocate of executing your assignment with all out effort-GoWarriors!!!!!

Kemp automatically gets 3-week salary minimum for being signed to roster contract. That’s $82,000 for just suiting up and standing on sidelines for one game. If he returns to practice squad, he gets minimum $7,200 per week with 10 regular season games left … don’t know about post season.
