Ursua to miss rest of season

Slotback John Ursua has been diagnosed with a torn ACL and will miss the rest of the football season.

Ursua, a third-year sophomore, suffered the injury on the first play of the second quarter the past Saturday.

Ursua is sixth nationally in receiving yards per game (111.2) and seventh in receptions (7.8 per game).

If they are going for Hawai’i bowl, all 5 games need to be wins. Iowa, West Virginia, South Carolina, those big names teams will attract 50,000 fans in Aloha Stadium in December. Someone needs to replace Ursua. Or give to Ammon to pick up the pick up throws. Find someone.

Diocemy has 1,904 career rushing yardage. He’ll obviously come in second to Gary Allen. But a good showing still needs to be there for them to win all five games.

Ursua was the guy to make the first downs. Now someone else will be that guy. He will be missed on 3rd & 8 or 3rd & 5. These are the plays that will give them the wins. 25,019 fans showed up on Saturday night.

Devastating loss for the team and Ursua. He’s such a dynamic player who brought national attention to the team. Next man up (Collie, Tullis, Timoteo), but how do you replace the swag that Ursua exudes; it’s the kind of confidence that filters through a team.

Muhammad Ali; don’t count the days, make the days count. And Hugh Hefner? A twisted faith, but he likes stupid women, even though he ccomes off as smart or intellectual.

Warriors should take Muhammad Ali’s advice.

don’t ask if can; ask how

with more than half the season done, can Ursua seek a medical red shirt?

someone mentioned that Dru Brown is 3rd best in UH history for completion % — is that true? seems to me a lot of passes are in the turf or over the head or too long or………….

  7. Casual Observer October 16, 2017 1:54 pm

DSJ is having a terrific year and you can see how he is using vision and patience to compliment his explosiveness. However, equal credit should be given to the O-line. Regarding Gary Allen, who were the O-line back then?

I feel so sick today learning about Ursua’s ACL. Hard to replace that kind production and inspiration the way he plays so hard all the time . And his infectious smile and how he just loves to play football with his energy. We can just hope that he’ll be ready to go for the beginning of next season. So, who’s going to fill those shoes and step up. It’s an opportunity for several players to make a difference.

Looking at the remaining schedule it’s hard to see that UH can be favored in any of them against SDSU, UNLV, Fresno St., Utah State, or BYU. I say this because our defense is so bad. San Jose St. is arguably the worst team in the conference and they gained over 500 yards of offense. Our passing defense can’t cover anybody. Opponents receivers are catching passing like they in a vacant lot with nobody around. Come On, Man! If Rolo doesn’t do anything about that, we will be blown out just like Colorado State did to us a couple of weeks ago.

Ursua. Will be missed. Hope everything goes well with recovery!!

    Go. Bows.

First and foremost best wishes for a complete recovery … Needless to say he will be missed … If I may use this forum I’d like to express my opinion here … This is one Rainbow Warrior Fan who is not happy w/ the performance of our “D”. “Rolo” needs to take a hard look at Coach Legi; maybe just have him coach the DL and bring in another DC … Kevin Clune maybe looking for a job as Gary Andersen is out at Oregon State. Another coaching position to look at is OL as there are way too many Holding and False Start penalties. With a new AD coming in at Nebraska I think it’s safe to say that Mike Riley may be out at the end of the season which means it’s very possible Mike Cavanaugh will also be looking for a new job. The problem w/ that is he’s used to making good 6 figure money which UH can’t pay but I’d like to see how the OL plays under John Estes. He could very well be the answer right here at home …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

Maybe they will start to design more looks and throws to the rarely thrown to tight ends. Was there another throw to the tight end by Brown or was the only one thrown was by the backup qb for the touchdown in the last game?

Seems like other teams throw a lot to their wide open tight ends with great success. Spreading it around May be helpful.

  12. m October 16, 2017 2:59 pm

    Get well John.

  13. Z October 16, 2017 3:23 pm

Maybe Tuiasoa in the backfield with Diocemi in the slot on occasion to get StJ in open space?

  14. H-Man October 16, 2017 3:25 pm

Coaches adjust. Next man up. Best wishes to John Ursua for full recovery.

  15. islandman October 16, 2017 3:30 pm

Better let the other running backs run more, so Saint Juste doesn’t wear out, etc.
Why doesn’t Tuiasoa get more chances ? This is his last year.
Defensive backs coaching may have a change ? per Bobby. A different lead coach or something.

  16. M L Warrior October 16, 2017 4:02 pm

Any idea how Chris Posada is?

  17. M L Warrior October 16, 2017 4:04 pm

    Chris Posa.

I say get more players involved in different grouping and change things up to keep opponents guessing. Practice special plays to perfect execution for various situations. Get McDonald more involved in certain plays including some passes. You can’t just do the same things over and over again if some things don’t work. You have to throw long a few times to keep the defenses honest and on their heels.

Best wishes for full complete recovery for John U. Now the question is who has commitment and conviction to fill his shoes. I still say if they can return to the form they had at Wyoming they have a chance to win all 5. BTW Meffy looked like his old self Saturday-he needs to stay that way. The secondary is the biggest issue-alignment/assignment appears to be the flaw. We will see-they can win all five.

  20. H-Man October 16, 2017 5:05 pm

Yup, agree. Need to change some on offense. I like Cole McDonald and Ryan Tuiasoa in bigger roles. Don’t know what to say about pass defense. I am baffled.

    Great Afternoon All!

    Best wishes to Mr. Ursua.

Close one going on in Music City. Guys with Hawaii ties on both sides.

    Das it

I was a little puzzled by Rolo’s response on the Coach’s show with Kanoa in response to how to replace Ursua. He said it is an opportunity for other guys to step up and he mentioned Isaiah Bernard and Kumoku Noa. Isn’t Noa redshirting? Are our active receivers that bad? What ever happened to Stubblefield? That kid was a top recruit and he has never seen the field. Isn’t he back from his injury? Why would you put a kid like Noa out there over all of those other receivers who have been working so hard?

Either I misheard the comment or simply don’t realize how poor we are at receiver.

  23. kev-1 October 16, 2017 9:47 pm

On another note, I think Ammon Barker looks more like a TE than a WR.

  24. Darren October 16, 2017 10:54 pm

It was Kalakaua that coach mentioned.

I recall hearing that they expect Posa back by next game. Norman has filled in very well when called upon.

  25. burro sabio October 16, 2017 11:16 pm

#22 – Noa redshirted last year.

  26. burro sabio October 16, 2017 11:21 pm

Not that it’s any indication of what Noa is capable of but he’s a legacy Rainbow Warrior, and this is what his brother is doing this year.

  27. Coach DB October 17, 2017 5:51 am

Best wishes John, the D really has to step it up and play better. The new players on the field filling in were recruited to play football SO PLAY! Unfortunately everyone has injuries right now that’s part of the game, so no one is at full strength. So go play as hard as you can and coach as well as you can and let’s hope for the best!!!

  28. cappie the dog October 17, 2017 6:17 am

If Coach Rolovich wants to be the 1982 Washington Redskins, I guess John Ursua’s injury will be somewhat mitigated.

The offense will miss Ursua’s yards after the catch.

I hope he makes a full recovery and returns as the same player.

  29. islandman October 17, 2017 7:58 am

Today, Tsai said Kade Greeley may be used in the slot and Noa may be in the mix.

  30. A-House October 17, 2017 9:15 am

like others I’m baffled by the lack of use of players who were recruited, given scholarships, practice, but no playing time

surely, coaching staff saw something that was the focal point for the above — so, why are they not playing? maybe, coaches are so “tunneled vision” to their depth chart and spend too little effort beyond the 3rd line — therefore, how much effort does one expect of all those not listed on the 3-tiered depth chart? sad to say, they will get nearly zero attention and inhibit their learning

let the position coaches concentrate on 1 – 3 and let the “grad assistants” work with all others — grad assistants must provide written progress reports on all players they work with w/o placing them on a gradient chart w/ recommendation on who can move up

  31. Ipu Man October 17, 2017 11:55 am

So how long is John in the hospital, if at all?

  32. Ipu Man October 17, 2017 11:57 am

Mariota playing with a strung ham
    showed true grit.

Best wishes to Ursua. Somebody will step up in the meantime.

    GO WARRIORS!!!
