Rolo vs. Chang
Quarterbacks coach Craig Stutzmann caught passes from Nevada receivers coach Tim Chang and UH head coach Nick Rolovich when they were Warrior teammates.
Here’s Stutzmann’s assessment:
> On Chang: “Timmy, I think, had a quicker release. He played in the system for such a long time. His anticipation was pretty good. The ball came out fairly quickly. He had the quick release that came out by his ear. I played with him at Saint Louis. When (Jason) Gesser got hurt our senior year, Timmy ended up playing the last two or three games for us. I played with him in high school and in college.”
> On Rolovich: “That guy has a cannon. He has a little bit longer delivery. But once he got the understanding of the (run-and-shoot) system, he did a good job of looking defenders off and sticking (passes) on guys. He knew his delivery was a little bit longer so he had to move guys a little bit more (with his eyes). But, gosh, he has a cannon. I remember him splitting Channon’s fingers a couple times. Channon (Harris) would always come back, saying, ‘Damn, Rolo, take a little bit off.'”
> Verdict: “Rolo’s my favorite. I’ve got to say that. And not just because he writes my paychecks.”

Always fun to hear success stories from the not so distant past. Now if they could only transfer those skills and successes to the present a bit quicker . . .
Hmmmmn, from my day, the guy with biggest cannon—no doubt, Bernard Quarles. Guy could legit throw 70 yards….

This should be a fun game with Rolo and Timmy on opposite sides – two of Warriors great quarterbacks. I went to the games when Bernard Quarles was playing, but I can’t remember the games, nor details of how he played. Who were his receivers? Wasn’t he a good running quarterback? Just too old with a fading memory.
The Nevada game this weekend is a very important one. The Colorado State game established that we are not in the top tier of the conference. Nevada currently clearly is in the bottom tier. If we don’t win and win decisively we will also start to look like a bottom tier team. The local fanbase is fatigued with being a bottom tier team. If we lose in Nevada their fragile hope for a brighter future will take a hit and Aloha Stadium will start to feel like Aloha Mortuary again for the San Jose game.

Did I read that Timmy is the “inside receivers” coach? Seems out of place, but I guess the OC (Mumme) has the seniority and background to coach the QB’s.
IIR Mumme’s system is complex and takes time to fully integrate. Would be really appreciative if they get better sometime after this game.

Saturday I say is a must win for both teams.
More so for Nevada being they just lost to conference foe.

I’d have to disagree, I would say this game is more so of a must win for Hawaii. Nevada’s season is pretty much screwed as it is. If Hawaii were to lose to a win-less team, also would be it’s fourth loss in a row, I think that would really put the season and bowl hopes in jeopardy. Not to mention that it would really kill attendance (If it already wasn’t killed after this past Saturday’s loss).
Bowl schmol, I don’t care. Just focus on winning this one and look no further……..that’s how you get better. A solid mistake free 3 unit effort with reckless passion. Nothing else matters. It is well past the time for some of these guys to prove themselves. GoWarriors!!!!!

according to Sports-Reference.com, Bernard Quarle’s 1981-1982 stats were as follows:
1981: 40/76 602 yds 4 TDs – other QBs were Tim Lyons and Ralphel Cherry; top WRs were Merv Lopes (23 rec/313 yds), Ron Pennick (22 rec/311 yds), and Duane Coleman (13 rec/226 yds). Gary Allen rushed for 1006 yards so they didn’t need to pass as much.
1982: 103/188 1350 yds 7 TDs – other QB was Cherry; top WRs were Walter Murray (13/31 rec/494 yds), Joe Nobles (19 rec/355 yds), and Duane Coleman (24 rec/287 yds). The featured RB was Anthony Edgar who had 900 rushing yards.
1982 was my first year going to UH games. I remember Joe Nobles being the clutch receiver going over the middle to make key 3rd down receptions.

Boola and UH Fan for Life, many thanks for shaking the cobwebs. Aahh, Walter Murray, Gary Allen, Ralph Cherry, Joe Nobles, Merv Lopes, greats from the past. I met Tim Lyons at the 2012 USC pregame get-together at the Coliseum. Really nice guy. Jesse Sapolu was there too. Both guys are real gentlemen. They left a lasting impression on me.

I’m not anti-Timmy Chang but I would rate three quarterbacks ahead of him.
1. Colt Brennan(please, somebody give him a job before he turns into Scooter in “Hoosiers”; as a
high-round draft pick, he would have stuck in the league longer as an injury-ridden QB)
2. Nick Rolovich(doesn’t he still hold some obscure record: most yards in a 5-game span)
3. Michael Carter(because he played with broken ribs; because you need a representative from the
Wagner years)
4. Timmy Chang(he never threw over 60%)
I’m tempted to put Brian Moniz ahead of Chang, but some of you may think I’m being a troll. Does anybody out there want to make the argument of Moniz over Chang. Probably Chang is better because he played pre-season NFL for the Eagles. And Moniz may have been a product of being blessed with excellent receivers and a monster of a running back.

Alex Kaloi and Mike Biscotti were pretty good QBs for UH back in the day. Remember watching Kaloi when he was a sophomore QB at Leilehua HS and he was special. He was a tough buggah who could take a hit (from teammates like Cliff Laboy in practice)
Timmy Chang was my favorite with Colt a close second. Chang threw beautiful deep balls–so nice I imagined even I could catch them. He did not have the receivers that Colt had. Chang’s record interceptions was largely from balls bouncing of his receivers helmets, chest pads, and wooden hands.
24. Kaloi’s stats weren’t that good at UH, apparently. He threw twice as much INT’s as TD’s. He was the Hula T QB for Larry Price, 1974-1976, but didn’t play too much in 1976. his last season. Was he injured ? Who was the QB in 1976 ?
He could run pretty good though I remember one play where he ran right up the middle through center for a long TD at Honolulu Stadium.
There was a backup QB named June Jones in 1974, but he did not play one minute, i think.

26 – I recall a season-ending injury, maybe the neck. IIRC some freshman name Gaison took over.
Alex Kaloi suffered a neck injury his senior year and never played again. He was a better runner than passer. Stats were’t the best, but one tough player who took a beating in the Hula-T offense. He became a successful dentist on the Leeward Coast. Think there was an Oklahoma transfer named McReynolds (?) to took over, but didn’t do very well. Freshman Blane Gaison also played in 76, but had such a bad experience, he was ready to transfer to Boise State before new coach Dick Tomey re-recruited him to stay.
27 to 29, thanks for the memory. Also, Jones bio says he was at UH 1973 to 1974. I don’t think he played one down at UH but he did very well after transferring to Portland St. 50 TD’s to 20 INT, 1975 to 76. He was at Oregon 1971-72 .
I rather have the Rolo T to the Hula T for offensive power.

Gary Allen played 8 yrars or 9 years for the Dallas Cowboys in 1985, as a backup running back to Tony Dorsett.

Was it the San Diego State game this past weekend where their mascot appeared to be a student dressed up as an Aztec and looked pretty cool, like the old days of the similar warrior at UH. That would be the a good plan to go back to, plus offering the student picked to get free tuition as an incentive. If this is somehow offensive to the Hawaiian culture and Studies at the UH, could someone please explain why?

Very anxious for this weeks game. We are 1-7 at Reno over last several years. The Greeley kid at TE is intriguing. Hopefully we are at full strength in the OL and the other two units come to really play “Warrior” football. I’m looking for some fire in the belly type of play right out of the box and as the Coach has been quoted-not getting too cute with some of the offensive play calling. The most complete game so far has been against Wyoming-two long plays may have been negated had some DL not made poor choices. Hopefully we can kick the ball into the end zone and not deal with all the drama. Anyway we will find out about team leadership in this game because this is one that has to be played full throttle start to finish-GoWarriors!!!!!!!!

The film adaptation with Anthony Hopkins doesn’t capture the deadpan humor in “The Remains of the Day”.
The manservant’s whole world is butler minutae.
There is this scene where he sits around with other butlers and talk about hall of fame-level butlers with the same sort of awe that we reserve for great coaches and athletes.
Butler-ing is his entire world; his religion. Just like how I imagine fans of Penn State and Baylor. In the book, the butler puts up with his boss, a Nazi collaborator. Some fan bases will put up with anything.
I love this athletic program.
I will put up with total crap as long as we maintain our integrity.
Kazuo Ishiguro also wrote “Never Let Me Down”. It is almost as relevant as Margaret Atwood’s “The Handmaid’s Tale”, as contemporary fiction goes. The kids at the school are a great analogue for the people of North Korea.
Ishiguro is Japanese, but he’s England’s greatest living writer.

Nevada game, I believe, will dictate the rest of the season, we are as talented or more so talented than anyone else on our schedule (except for SDST, I dont mention BYU because they look AWFUL right now). Beat the teams you should beat and you are 7-4 going into the BYU game. Anything less would be disappointing. I also think its time for Rolo to take the play calling away from Smith and lets get back to put 35-40 pts on the board..
