Howling getting the start at MB, rest of starting lineup stays the same
Koelsch, Castillo, Maglio, Iosia, Granato, Kahakai

  2. greenthumb September 30, 2017 4:09 pm

Are we (in Hawaii) blocked this year from Big West since it is sidearm streaming? Just getting a black box.

  3. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:14 pm

Hawaii up 10-5, TO UCR. Howling with the last two kills.

  4. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:15 pm

    2. it shouldn’t be blacked out in Hawaii.

  5. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:17 pm

I am able to watch. try this link

  6. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:21 pm

UCR tied it at 12, UH has scored three straight including block by Maglio. 15-12. Timeout highlanders

  7. warriorfan September 30, 2017 4:22 pm

Not a good stream but better than nothing.
I don’t think Casey should be playing backrow, I like Mckenna R coming in to play there, she can hit from back there as well.

  8. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:26 pm

Hawaii in that bad rotation with Iosia in the front row. Was 18-13. it’s now 18-18

  9. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:27 pm

Ahuna with the kill for UCR. ties it at 19. TO UH

  10. warriorfan September 30, 2017 4:27 pm

When Mckenna G struggles the wahine struggle, she’s not off to a good start.

  11. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:32 pm

    Highlanders take Set 1 25-20
outscored Hawaii 7-1 at the end. Ahuna with a couple of kills
For the first time since UH rejoined the Big West UCR has taken a set in Riverside

  12. Kahuna September 30, 2017 4:33 pm

Ugh! Not able to watch anything meaningful. I’m at the McD across from the stadium ready for football and I’m getting one second of action….then freezes.

  13. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:34 pm

    10. than she is.
do think that the Big West doesn’t do Hawaii any favors. the Wahine are the only match of the week for most teams. UCR was off last night.

  14. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:36 pm

    12. don’t know what to tell you. I’m not having issues

  15. warriorfan September 30, 2017 4:36 pm

wahine need to wake up, Cal Poly taking care of business so far.

  16. Astroboy September 30, 2017 4:36 pm

Strange, I just reloaded the stream and the audio came back three times louder and the video quality jumped to HD.

  17. warriorfan September 30, 2017 4:41 pm

jeez all these hitting errors, evan Mags is making them.

  18. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:47 pm

Hawaii not looking good at all Ma’afala setting. UCR up 15-11.

  19. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:48 pm

Rosas with the kill. late touch call. it’s 16-11. no replay. TO UH

  20. Marcie Purdy September 30, 2017 4:48 pm

Haha…I tried that and yes three times louder and had video but still stop and go…quick freezes.

  21. warriorfan September 30, 2017 4:50 pm

they are getting outblocked by a very small team, and Granato has 8 errors already, kind of a nightmare start to this match.

  22. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 4:57 pm

    wow. Riverside wins 25-19.

  23. Brandon September 30, 2017 4:58 pm

This is utterly pathetic. They deserve to lose this match with the way they are playing

  24. mei mei September 30, 2017 4:58 pm

    yikes!
this is hard to watch ;(

  25. Ashley September 30, 2017 4:59 pm

    wow,
Hawai‘i looks awful. Definitely not NCAA worthy if you ask me. no way they will beat other teams in the conference with performances like the one we are seeing tonight. they look defeated.

  26. mei mei September 30, 2017 5:00 pm

    why was Iosia pulled?

also wish coach would pull Granato out, looks like she is off 2nite
try another OH (Sibs or Ross at this point)

  27. Maverick September 30, 2017 5:02 pm

UH is inconsistent. Theme of the year.

  28. Volleyball Fan September 30, 2017 5:03 pm

Cal Poly is now ahead two sets to zero, but each time they had to come from behind a slow start. Team seems a bit shaky and sloppy at times, sharp at other times. If anyone finds the Riverside match hard to watch, why not switch over and watch Cal Poly vs. CSUN? Anything can happen in the upcoming third set.

  29. warriorfan September 30, 2017 5:03 pm

    Everyone is off, even Mags.
Kendra can’t put a ball down, and Mckenna G way too many hitting errors.
Wish could would have made more substitions than just taking out Iosia, Would have like to have seen Sibley or Skyler , anything to not go down 2-0.

  30. Bleachercoach September 30, 2017 5:03 pm

23….You are absolutely correct….oh boy they will hear an EARFUL during intermission..If I was the coach I would say this, ” You folks are the first team to lose 2 sets and maybe the match to UC Riverside since entering the Big West Conference. Its pathetic!”

  31. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:10 pm

    30. no, it’s the first team to lose sets when playing at UCR
this would be a devastating loss. Very surprised Sibley not in

  32. greenthumb September 30, 2017 5:11 pm

4, thanks, Cindy. I got in that way on my laptop. Not sure why iPad had issues.

  33. warriorfan September 30, 2017 5:12 pm

Wahine need to buckle up and pull this out, they loss this and it’s goodbye NCAA tournament.
Granato needs to hit smarter or get pulled.

  34. greenthumb September 30, 2017 5:16 pm

This is a good time for Ross fireplug in the back row.

  35. Volleyball Fan September 30, 2017 5:16 pm

    31. I don’t think so. Didn’t Cal Poly lose an entire match at Riverside some years ago before Adlee van Winden joined the team? I faintly recall that this happened one time.

  36. Ki September 30, 2017 5:22 pm

How many times does Granato have to mess up before she is replaced?

  37. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:24 pm

UH up 18-17 on a block of Ahuna. TO UCR

  38. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:26 pm

    35. we’re discussing UH, not the rest of the Big West
Wahine had never dropped a set at UCR since rejoining the BWC

  39. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:28 pm

Koelsch with 2 kills, it’s 21-18. TO UCR

  40. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:32 pm

Castillo with the final 3 kills. UH wins 25-20

  41. Maverick September 30, 2017 5:36 pm

LBSU up 2-0 on UCSB and leading in the third. Ruddins sure could use some help on that team.

  42. mei mei September 30, 2017 5:36 pm

please continue to dig deep na wahine!
    ladies got this!

  43. Volleyball Fan September 30, 2017 5:39 pm

    38. Sorry I misunderstood you. I was also wrong about UH finishing up with Riverside before Cal Poly match with CSUN. Cal Poly won in three straight sets. This time Torrey van Winden was the most valuable player. Meanwhile, UH still has a chance to come back in five sets.

  44. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:40 pm

UH up 6-2. Maglio with her 600th kill. TO UCR

  45. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:48 pm

UH was up 12-6. It’s now 12-10. TO UH Ahuna still serving

  46. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 5:53 pm

UCR with a hitting error. it’s 17-13. TO UCR

  47. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 5:56 pm

come on wahine! charge all the way!

  48. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 6:01 pm

Castillo ends it 25-19. on to Set 5

  49. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 6:02 pm

alright wahine, time to charge all the way and finish this!

  50. Maverick September 30, 2017 6:02 pm

Sounds like UH is playing at home. Huge crowd for Na Wahine.

  54. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 6:14 pm

    wahine stay hot! and finish!

  55. greenthumb September 30, 2017 6:14 pm

Looks like Granato is getting stronger as the match goes on. 8 more to go.

  56. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 6:18 pm

Granato with 22 kills. UH up 11=5. TO UCR

  57. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 6:21 pm

Block by Maglio and Castillo ends it 15-7

  58. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 6:22 pm

    and na wahine rises again!

    but was that really necessary?

  59. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 6:25 pm

    55. indeed

nevertheless na wahine still deserve an earful. they lost the first 2 sets to the bottom of the league/something a team considerable smaller than them. and barely survived.

theyre lucky they survived. how shoddy would it have been if they lost or worst swept.

  60. mei mei September 30, 2017 6:25 pm

    whew~~~!!
it’s gonna be a heart attack type of season.
    win is a win !
give credit to UCR tho…what an awesome transfer from Kamehameha for them.

  61. Astroboy September 30, 2017 6:25 pm

I suspect Robyn will be yelling at them the whole flight home.

  62. vballfan September 30, 2017 6:26 pm

The Wahine need to work with a “sports psychologist” like Chris McLachlin to help break the habit of slow starts. The low production in first two sets is unacceptable. But, a win is a win.

  63. warriorfan September 30, 2017 6:27 pm

And that’s why Robyn is the coach, Mckenna G came through in the end after a horrible start.

  64. Volleyball Fan September 30, 2017 6:28 pm

In watching the tail end of the UH-Riverside match, I was surprised to learn that UH audio was synched with the Under Armour video. I get to watch UH matches live on the mainland, but not in Hawaii.

As for Cal Poly next week, I think that Hawaii will wake up and play a whole lot better than in Riverside. No win is guarantee for either side. It should be an interesting match.

  65. Ron September 30, 2017 6:32 pm

I never doubted the outcome. I’m lying I doubted up until 11 to 5 in the 5th!!!

  66. Big Island volleyball fan September 30, 2017 6:36 pm

    61. Robyn cannot yell at them in the plane. She’ll probably do all her yelling in the locker room after the match and then settle down. For sure UH will come out hot against UCSB next week. Both UH and Cal Poly have slow starts so whoever is overall sharper will win that match.

  67. Bleachercoach September 30, 2017 6:38 pm

    63. Very true but we cannot depend on her alone against a Top 20 Team….We just don’t have a true “Terminator” YET who hits at a high pct. until we recruit one. Mags hit at a high pct for a MB but we need a strong OTT. OH type that can play consistent throughout the match. Even with that type of player we need a well balanced team. To me, Emily Hartong was the last one. She played every match and played it very well throughout until we met our match against BYU in the 1st/2nd Round of the NCAA at the Stan where they just wore her down with double and triple blocks.
Good win but not great tonite because of the caliber team we played. It still feels rather good going into next week match up with Cal Poly (2 unbeaten left)

  68. 2left September 30, 2017 6:57 pm

Was at the game and very interesting contrast between teams at the break before the deciding fifth set. UCR was intensely huddling. Hawaii was dancing. Loose turned out to be good.

  69. greenthumb September 30, 2017 7:03 pm

68, thanks for sharing that. Any other neat things you saw? Also, from the video it looked like Hawaii had most of the crowd, but we only saw one side of the gym. How did the audience split overall?

  70. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 7:31 pm

    here is a..interesting fact.

wahine had 17 aces in a sweep match last night…a new record post rally scoring….

    here is a..shoddy fact.

wahine had no aces tonight and 9 service errors. riverside aced castillo 4 times – she said she misses passing right? meaning misses the ball passing?

  71. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 7:34 pm

    8. didnt coach robyn take care of ‘that bad rotation with Iosia in the front row’?

and how exactly is that a bad rotation especially against an undersized team?

i hope robyn fixes that right away. i dont care if she needs to put her spin serving libero as mobile reserves in the front row subbing her out or doing a double sub.

  72. 2left September 30, 2017 8:27 pm

    69. Seemed like 60-70 percent Hawaii fans. Felt like a home game with lots of friends and family in the house. Around me I think we’re the Castillos, Ross’s, Greeleys, and Skye’s family brought in a four foot cutout of her smiling face. The student section was on the camera side, but only 20 percent filled and half were UH fans. Twice a guy and a girl ran with a UH banner from the UH bench to right behind the UCR bench. Crowd went wild (but I personally felt that might have been a little too much “in your face”).

  73. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 8:41 pm

    61. she won’t be yelling on the flight. They had a lengthy chat after the match. at least an hour.
    62. McLachlin works with the team
    63. Granato went 13-0-21 the final 2 sets.
    71. obviously it wasn’t fixed since they gave up runs when Iosia was front row.
One issue, according to Ah Mow-Santos, is the hitters haven’t adjusted to the smaller teams. The Big West teams do not have the size the Wahine faced in pre-conference

  74. Cindy Luis September 30, 2017 8:53 pm

Part of the recap from UH
The University of Hawai’i women’s volleyball team (10-5, 4-0 Big West) survived a five-set thriller in reverse sweep fashin on Saturday night at UC Riverside (8-8, 0-4 Big West), 20-25, 19-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-7 in the SRC Arena. For the Rainbow Wahine, it marked their eighth-straight win. McKenna Granato overcame a rough start to finish with a match-high 22 kills while Casey Castillo and Emily Maglio both finished with 14 kills apiece as the Rainbow Wahine remained unbeaten in conference.

Granato finished strong, with 13 kills and no errors in the final two sets. She finished with her sixth double-double of the season with 11 digs to go with her 22 kills. She also added a pair of blocks and an assist for a match-high 23.0 points.

Castillo hit .500 for the match, with 14 kills and three errors in 22 attacks. She added three digs and two blocks. For the sixth time this year, she had double-digits in kills and ended the match just one kill short of tying her career-high.

Maglio finished with double-digit kills for the sixth straight match and 11th time this year. Her 14 kills against the Highlanders pushed her past the 600 career kill mark. She entered the match needing just 10 to hit the milestone mark as she finished the night with 604 career kills. Maglio also led UH with three blocks while posting two digs.

Savanah Kahakai continued her march up the UH career-dig ladder, passing former UH All-American Kanoe Kamana’o for No. 6 on UH’s career dig list. Kahakai needed just four digs entering tonight’s match to tie Kamana’o at 1,220. Kahakai finished the match with 15 digs which brings her career total to 1,231. She is now chasing Kanani Danielson who is at No. 5 in UH career digs with 1,233. It was the 11th time this year and her fifth-straight match that Kahakai has had 10+ digs.

Tying her career-high in digs tonight was Clare-Marie Anderson who finished the match with 10 digs for the third time this season and fourth time in her career.

  75. Kahuna September 30, 2017 8:57 pm

I think Robyn need to pick her spot to “yell”. Constant yelling is not going to work in the long run. It becomes noise when you do it all the time. She need to TEACH. Use the time to instruct, teach and inform on how to get better.

Everyone knows Robyn is intense but that does not mean she has to be a screaming maniac. You can be just as effective in getting your message across in a firm but calm tone.

  76. Warriorfan September 30, 2017 9:05 pm

    75. She aint a screaming maniac lol
I think her tone is perfectly fine.

  77. warriorwahine September 30, 2017 9:54 pm

bet na wahine wont hear the end of it despite them winning. they deserved to be chewed for their first and second set performance against pretty much the weakest team in the league. they were leading the first game and then what?? was swepted aside and had to be threatened to be swept to react. worst than sleeping on the court. they ‘survived.’ even the announcer who is on hawai’is side said they survived.

    73. i thought robyn took care of that since that 5th set loss to byu?

  78. Maverick September 30, 2017 10:02 pm

    70. The aces record is an all-time record.

  79. FitTrainer October 1, 2017 4:46 am

The team apparently had some really long, hard practices just before they left on this road trip. You can bet they will be worked in the gym this week as well. I just hope it isn’t overdone because with training, travel, school etc. They need a balance of recovery time as well so they are well rested for the big games this weekend.

  80. tako October 1, 2017 6:42 am

Every win is a great win. Every win allows the Wahine a chance at post season play. Every win demonstrates the team’s ability to step up. Every win is better than a great loss. Great job Wahine!

Rest up and get ready for two more great games this weekend. Rooting for Mags to get 20 kills per night this weekend.

  81. FitTrainer October 1, 2017 8:50 am

    80. Tako, agreed on all. Way to stay positive!

  82. oldtimer808 October 1, 2017 9:31 am

This team is a work in progress so I found it interesting how our coach used our players. The freshmen are getting valuable experience and I believe Mags will become a six rotation player soon. I expect every match this year will be difficult so to be able to pull out a win on the road is commendable.

  83. islandman October 1, 2017 9:42 am

    77. Fullerton looked weaker than UCR. UH coming back from 2 sets down was very good.
I think i saw Robyn was standing nearer the bench after the first two sets or so instead of standing close to the court. Some opponent coaches sit mostly on the bench during the games.

  84. noblesol October 1, 2017 10:55 am

Shoji would say they fail sometimes to match the other teams intensity.

Most of Hawaii’s BW competition in recent years measures season success two ways. How close to the top did they finish, and how many sets did they take from Hawaii. They plan all week just for Hawaii, then come out guns blazing and adrenaline pumping looking to steal a set or two before Hawaii collects themselves and reacts.

It’s not always about taking care of just what’s on their side. They need to understand what is on the other side and what is coming their way, with a team commitment to smart play, execution, effort, trust in each other, and being in the zone and in sync as a team when the first whistle blows. That applies to everyone from the coaches to the last player on the sideline. Then there will be success in matching the intensity and tactics on the the other side.

Of course, easier said then done. But it’s a way to get off the roller coaster.

  85. rabbit ears October 1, 2017 11:55 am

Games like this you kind of want to forget and move on. However, Riverside did expose the wahines weaknesses. Blocking from our outside hitters. Noreen setting has been subpar lately also. I am sure passing has alot to do with it. But her connections have been off. Granato early sets struggles was related to poor sets.

  86. warriorwahine October 1, 2017 12:43 pm

    85. the setting may as well been the issue. norene despite her nice hands may just get chewed just like higgins gets it. because when the hitters dont hit right, its always the setters fault.

  87. J October 1, 2017 12:56 pm

    72. 2left, Skye’s expression when she was greeted by that 4-foot version of her face… I don’t think she knew what to think. Of course that was after the post-match team meeting…

  88. FitTrainer October 1, 2017 3:01 pm

    85. I concur. The outside blocking has been a weakness. Hopefully, the team is already working on make adjustments to the defense playing behind them. The connections have also been off. While Iosia has “nice hands” she has not been at her best as of late. I wouldn’t say it is just to Granato. The connections have been off (often too low to all the middles). That said, we know the passing hasn’t been perfect and both Koelsch and Castillo are still working in their approach so that might be contributing factors in their connections. The revolving door of players early on may have also contributed and hopefully the connections will be sharper.

There will be days/matches like this. Even the best teams in the country experience something like this on occasions. No need to be all depressed and make like the world is crumbling.

We righted the ship and won the match…that is all that matters. There were also some disadvantages we faced.

One is we had to prepare for two teams on back to back nights. I believe we were Fullerton’s only game this week. Riverside played on Tuesday so they had three days to concentrate on us, We had to juggle two different scouting reports on two different teams on back to back nights.

Riverside was well-rested and played with a chip on their shoulder. Give them credit for coming out strong.

#89, that is the Big West scheduling for you. All BW teams appear to only have to play only once on the weekend they play UH, whereas UH oftentimes has to play on back-to-back nights, both at SSC and on the road. It is definitely a handicap, with the excuse being that UH does not have a travel partner if I recall correctly. And guess what? UCSD applies BWC membership and creates a potential travel partner and are rejected. UCSD would not get a travel subsidy so it’s good for UH, but our conference opponents do not want to lose their advantage against UH despite receiving the travel subsidy.

Maybe I’m way off, but that’s what I see. The only solution is to power through the disadvantage and kick BWC rears.

With the odd amount of teams in the BWC (after Pacific left), one school was bound to be the lone wolf. Dave volunteered his team as the lone wolf in 2013 in hopes of saving money on travel expenses. Its been that way ever since.

72, thanks for the extra details! Nice for the families to be able to see their Wahine members play in person.

#91, I understand that. The denial of UCSD’s application to join BWC is what puzzles me. UH would have a travel partner. And UH would not have to pay travel subsidies to UCSD. UCSD could not have been denied for academic reasons.

just my opinion—present team has potential , but could be tweaked! Still think Castillo should be opposite(better block vs. opposing teams left side )- Sibley and Granato at OH – Koelsch as blocking sub for Iosia – Mck Ross backrow sub for Castillo/Granato . Still waiting for Mags (and possibly Ross ), to play all around. Team will suffer for loses of Smith (Gong and Okino winners),Misraje and Lipscomb (needed terminators at OH) and Light (6’1″ setter) but still have good players coming in! TEAM needs to stay FOCUSED !!!! I believe in you-ROBYN —- GO BOWS

Quick question for all: if a hitter gets roofed on a swing, is that considered an error for stat purposes? if not, is an error only when it is hit out? Sorry for what might be a stupid question.

94: I agree that there are some different lineups I’d like to see Coach try out. Personally, I think Castillo has been playing pretty well at OH (hitting wise), so I’m inclined to keep her there. Hawaii tends to get stuck in rotations when Iosia is in the front row. Pro/National teams often have a double sub for this reason. I’d love to see a Ma’afala (who has set the ball brilliantly to the middles and has a solid jump serve) & Sibley double sub regularly. The other option (especially if we’re running low on substitutions) is to keep Koelsch in as the back row setter and just sub Iosia out for Sibley.

    connor,

Yes, getting blocked for an opponent’s point is statistically a hitting error.
