In all honesty, Hawaii is not going to be in the poll unless they win at least 2 matches in the NCAA tournament. And the only way that’s going to happen is if they win the Big West.

Not too worried about the big west IF the wahine continue to serve the way they have and continue to hit smart.
Wahine should serve and block big west teams off the court( including cal poly) the way they have been serving.
I don’t understand why people are so fixated on the polls. Polls have no bearing on whether you win or lose a match.
If the Wahine play each game like it’s their last of the season and win their conference, than the polls will take care of itself…..but their RPI is what truly counts.
I really believe the girls can do it as they seem to have finally found their “mojo”, and with Robin and crew urging them on, their destiny is in their hands.
Polls have no bearing on whether you win or lose, but they are a reflection of it. Plus, recruits pay attention to the polls. And I don’t recall people complaining about the attention paid to the polls when UH was ranked in the top 15. Rather, they were basking in such news.
Love all the recency bias here. If Na Wahine plays teams of Northern Arizona’s caliber, then they should serve and block them all off the court. Too bad that is a pipe dream, and not reflective of the BW. The team is too inconsistent to believe they will dominate the remaining schedule of teams, and it still hasn’t proven it can beat a top 25 team.

6-Other than Cal Poly, Big West is terrible this year. I disagree Northern Arizona would probably have a winning conference record if they played in the Big West this year. I would be shocked if Hawaii lost more than one or two games in conference this season.
Only a few coaches vote for the weekly AVCA polls. Hawai’i as does any other school will use the polls if they are in it and want to market the program. However, as it stands, the RPI is the one tool that the committee uses that is closer to ranking the post season teams.
Below is the link of who voted and how they voted for this week. There is a lot of conference and team bias per the coaches voting. Many haven’t seen the other teams play or do they vote consistently. Relax.

8. Seriously, look at the body of work to date. No. AZ matches are not a good basis for predicting future performance. I love it when you critique a team, all of sudden people question if you are a fan. If that were the case, there would be no fans of the team. Just read the threads from the first weekend when UH went 0-3.
9. No. AZ would not have a winning record in the BW this year. Also, how is it that BW is terrible this year? BW has a better non-conf record than last year. Sounds like more hyperbole.

I saw as well, that the conference RPI was up over last year. I don’t think the conference will be a cakewalk but there also isn’t any top 25 teams (based on the polls). I don’t think any team can be taken lightly.
The team still has a good shot at winning conference in my opinion. I think it will come down to scouting reports and game plans. Last year Hawaii had LBSU’s number even though the teams were fairly evenly matched. Hopefully, that can be repeated!
Baylor received 36 points n the AVCA poll. Cal Poly 61. So as I see it, Wahine beats Cal Poly, they get some votes. UCLA, BYU keep winning. Wahine beat Cal Poly second time and stay undefeated in conference, then they stand a good chance to get ranked.

Our recruitment has been lackluster the last few years under DS, the proof in the pudding… you have to recruit top-tier talent and not ‘projects’ or try to develop players. Those days are gone!!
Wanna win titles, recruit talented players…. See the direction that our men’s team doing, Charlie Wade has upgraded the recruiting, trying to get the best talent here. Got to the National Semi-Final (Final 4) and I believe our men will get that National Title we all desire.

I agree that Cal Poly will be the biggest challenge. It is possible that both UH and Cal Poly will share the Big West title if each team wins on its own home court and doesn’t lose to anyone else.
16- Easier said than done. Look at the UH Campus. Hard to compare to Stanford, USC ,UCLA or Washington. Even Shoji send his boys away. We need to go overseas again. Charlie Wade does, So does the Beach.
16. Recruiting to UH has been tougher compared to before. Now most of the top tier talent goes to the bigger name schools.
Posts concerning the top recruits going to the Bigs. The obvious reasons are repeated over and over again. I would like to read more about how UH can come up with others means and ways to solve the recruiting problem, competing with the Bigs. One way may be Angelica’s European connection or Robyn’s Team USA. This year’s team just needs one, just one terminator to compliment Mac G, Mags and Casey. Look at how one player, Torrey V-W has influenced Poly’s rise.
20. Torrey van Winden was not recruited. She asked to transfer to Cal Poly. When I met her in person this summer on a visit to Cal Poly campus, I asked her why she left UCLA. She had her reason, bad experience, but did not specify. Cal Poly was simply lucky to get her. UH will also need luck to reel in a big hitter, likewise.
Cal Poly just beat UC Davis in three straight sets. The star of this match was not Torrey van Winden this time. She had started very slow and hit negative in the first set and then started catching up. Instead, today’s star was the senior, Raeann Greisen with 13 kills out of 15 attempts and no errors, the most kills in either team, and she’s not even a middle blocker! She hit for a monstrous 86.7%! Evidently the block was so focused on Torrey van Winden (she was blocked several times), that Greisen capitalized on easy hitting opportunities. Cal Poly has a bunch of good hitters there.

The poll doesn’t mean anything and as we’ve long said, it’s coaches’ opinions and the points fall where they do.
Many of us have been saying that Cal Poly will be the key to this season.
Agree that the rest of the Big West isn’t great.
Spoke with UCI coach today. She agreed. And hopes that the BWC could be a two-bid league
Torrey Van Winden left UCLA for a couple of reasons, including playing with her sister and for the school her family has long had ties.
When I asked Sealy if it was a surprise, he just looked at me and said nothing.
Not sure if that was a yes or no.
