Warriors enjoying 2-0 start

No, it was not a “pretty” win. Then again, it wasn’t supposed to be artistry. Football is rough, unpredictable and 3 hours of punches, counter punches, and counter-counter punches. For the Warriors, here are the good things:

> The Warriors are 2-0 for the first time since 2009, when they opened with victories against Central Arkansas and Washington State. It was in that road win in Pullman that Nick Rolovich and Dave Aranda were handed the keys to the offense and defense. Aranda is a now a millionaire defensive coordinator at LSU. Rolovich, of course, is a not-a-millionaire head coach.

> The Warriors extended their winning streak to five, their longest since 2010, when they won six in a row. That streak went like this: Charleston Southern (66-7), Louisiana Tech (41-21), at Fresno State (49-27), No. 19 Nevada (27-21), at Utah State (45-70 and Idaho (45-10).

> Diocemy Saint Juste is back. Saint Juste and Meffy Koloamatangi are nominees for player-of-the-week awards for offense and special teams.

> Sure, WCU quarterback Tyrie Adams did some damage (270 yards passing, 107 rushing). But Detrez Newsome, who was the NCAA’s all-purpose leader in 2016, netted 27 rushing yards. Last season, Newsome had 12 negative-yard carries; against UH, he averaged 1.9 yards per carry and totaled 17 negative yards.

> Stan Gaudion averaged 41 yards on three kick-away punts and placed a sky kick on the 1. There is something about Australian punters.

> The students were back. Unfortunately, they will have to wait until Sept. 30 for the next UH home game.

Thoughts?

* * * * *

Congrats to Marcus Kemp and Leo Koloamatangi on being assigned to the practice squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Detroit Lions, respectively. It gives them a chance to develop their skills and earn a nice check.

Here’s the math:

> A practice-squad player is paid weekly, earning a minimum $7,200 per week. He may be paid a higher amount, but all practice-squad wages are included in a team’s salary cap. If a player is on the practice squad for the entire 17-week season, he will earn $122,400.

> A player promoted to the 53-player active roster will be paid for at least three weeks, even if he is cut after one game. The NFL’s minimum annual salary is $465,000. That equates to $27,352.94 per game. If Kemp or Koloamatangi are promoted to the active roster, they will be assured at least $82,058.82.

A practice player also may be claimed and signed to another team’s active roster. But he can’t be poached to another team’s practice squad.

    Akoteu had 4 solo tackles.
UH had 14 tackles for loss, including 5 sacks.
Moala had 3 TFL, Manoa 2, Zeno had 2.5 TFL and one pass break up.

I think going after the ball and trying to knock it out of their hands is good even if it yields up YAC. Go Warriors. UCLA players are just Hollywood over rated actors in tight pant suits. I’ll predict after I see what bg posts… šŸ™‚

  4. Stephen Tsai September 3, 2017 11:39 am

Maybe I’m naive, but this is what I don’t understand.
If you live on Oahu, your options for watching the game live are pay-per-view at home, at a restaurant/bar/movie theater, or going to Aloha Stadium. Maybe we don’t like the prices. But it seems to be a fair agreement, especially because of the $2.3 million UH receives from local cable.
So if UH/MW are willing to provide telecasts for free (through an app) to mainland fans, why would a mainland fan re-stream it on platforms that Oahu people can access for free. OK, I know why. They want to do what they think is a good deed. The thing is, that gesture, while very well meaning, could cost all the mainland folks free access.
It would be like grandma saying: “Here’s $100 but only spend it on yourself.” And then you give half to your friend. Eventually, grandma is not going to give you the $100.
    Just my thoughts.

    Mr. Tsai,

This whole Spectrum baloney, “promises to make and promises to keep” that’s shown on TV and played on radio every other minute, it seems, will end up as truer baloney!

Hope the ghost of Robert Frost scares the Spectrum suits into giving him TONS of royalties:
The woods are lovely, dark and deep, but I have promises to keep, and miles to go before I sleep.

As the shuttle bus that I was on circled Aloha Stadium, I felt for sure there would be at least 25K in attendance when seeing the parking lot near capacity. The VIP sections were, by my estimate, 80% full. And it was nice to see the students (est. 400) at their “designated” spot in the parking lot. Even the parking lot at LCC was 100% full with cars overflowing to the side of the entrance road. Yet, announced attendance was just over 22K. My point is, if UH expects to reach an attendance of 30K, something has to be done to make more parking available. As it stands now, I don’t think it’s possible.

Congratulations to the team for the 2-0 start. The O-line controlled the trenches all game and DSJ and RT did a great job finding the holes and breaking tackles. The defense also made some key stops and played physical with lots of katooshes.

Question for coach Rolo: against UMass, Hawaii had a lot of big plays passing the ball while last night we dominated Western Carolina with the running game. Was this due to the opponent’s defensive schemes or our offensive game plan?

  10. UH Fan for Life September 3, 2017 12:49 pm

Last night’s game had two consecutive plays where a blocked resulted in a score (TD by Travon the thecblocked field goal followed by 2 points by Western Carolina off the blocked PAT). You don’t see that everyday. We were wondering if that’s ever happened before in an NCAAF game.

Congrats to BG for predicting the outcome to within 1 point of the actual score!

Western Carolina is a good team and their pass defense tight and excellent…in my opinion anyway. Their offense was potent and I love the hook and ladder they employ freely. Now that we have won, I would cheer for them in future games. Be interesting to watch Inside Access this week.

I thought the UH offensive plays were same-o same-o until I realized that we would be sharing this game film with UCLA this week. So maybe not reveal anything new and different?

  14. Whats up September 3, 2017 1:46 pm

Watching the UCLA vs Texas A&M game right now… UCLA doesn’t have much of a run game but it doesn’t hurt to a potiental #1 Overall NFL Draft pick QB Josh Rosen at the helm. The Hawaii secondary will have it’s hands full at the Rose Bowl next weekend.

  15. Boolakanaka September 3, 2017 2:10 pm

Josh Rosen is college football’s Jay Cutler, million dollar arm, 15 cents heart…..

Bringing this over from the last blog:

“Went to the stadium last night after missing out for the past 3 seasons. Started the afternoon with the Tsaiko tailgate and talked about shared Tsaiko experiences that Iā€™ve held dear through the years. Such a unique and caring bunch of folks that Iā€™ve had the privilege to know. There are still many that I missed at the tailgate for one reason or otherā€¦off-island, some are off-nation, but the relationships are still there. Special thanks to Sailor Blue and Mrs Blue for the unbelievable job they do in every aspect of the tailgate. They literally bring so much of everything to make it a special evening! We were so blessed that they walked into our lives.

I am unabashedly basking in the fame and glory to two consecutive predict the scores wins. Itā€™s hard not to let it go to my head and start a betting service, if I were into bettingā€¦but alas, itā€™s too much work for a retiree, so Iā€™ll just reveal my secret. I take my best case scenario and my worst case scenario and go halfway in between. Of course, Iā€™m just starting up a business selling time-shares in the Golden Gate Bridge and will gladly sell as many as needed if there are any believers out thereā€¦. hahahahaha”

As far as predicting for the UCLA game, I refuse to choose against Hawaii. So, I won’t prognosticate. I just believe strongly that the game will be closer than many expect. GO WARRIORS…ALL IN

  18. SteveM September 3, 2017 3:05 pm

Kudos to the UH students who came to the game last night! I noticed the almost full section and asked my seat partner if the section was still for UH students… šŸ™‚

Hey BG, you can’t sell timeshares on the Golden Gate bridge because you have not bought out my interest in it. Make me a deal I can’t refuse…

  19. Chicken Grease September 3, 2017 3:16 pm

    Texas A&M 38
    UCLA 10

Right now. On FS1. 2nd quarter. Few seconda more and it will be halftime.

Warriors just might be able to do the job there at the Rose Bowl later on.

  20. Chicken Grease September 3, 2017 3:19 pm

Leahy, DeMello, the others need to dress a little better during that halftime rant for UH football games. What’s with the jeans and/or khakis? Haircuts are so military-style short too. And the BEARDS. Come on, guys. The whole world is watching. We don’t have to be THAT “mountain”-ous in this league.

Hope they can talk about less obvious things about the game too.

  21. H-Man September 3, 2017 5:06 pm

“Rosen, given time to throw in the pocket…” will kill you. So Warriors know what it will take to have a chance of beating the Bruins.

  22. Bowwar September 3, 2017 5:29 pm

45-44 UCLA…Rosen leads the Bruins to a last minute comeback. The officiating was somewhat questionable, but make no mistake Rosen is deadly when given time. UH might have a chance If they can put pressure on Rosen & they overlook us.

  23. Uncle Claud September 3, 2017 5:37 pm

Whoa! Did you see how UCLA beat a good team, Texas A&M, after being down 34 points in the 4th Quarter? Amazing! Go ‘Bows!

  24. Duster September 3, 2017 6:03 pm

Volleyshots comments are closed so I’ll rant here. The live streaming of Wahine Volleyball has sucked, especially tonight. I am watching from NYC and get frequent freeze ups in the video, turning it into a radio broadcast by Kanoa and Chris. Is it Big West TV or Spectrum? It had hiccups on Friday but I was in Massachusetts so it ain’t my locale. It’s like Max Headroom all over again, but the screen did not go into perma-freeze with Max.

  25. Chicken Grease September 3, 2017 6:05 pm

  27. A-House September 3, 2017 6:31 pm

best part of last night’s game was the student section — nearly 3/4 full in both of them!!!

still believe community college student should have the opportunity to qualify for “student activity” privileges such as buying an athletic card, if they desire.

UCLA won?!! I stopped watching in the 3rd quarter, didn’t think they even had a chance to comeback.

    Guud Evening Tsaikos…Bootiful Evening!

    BG…U da Man!…fantastic prognostication…

Rosen is as advertised…deadly…. from 44-10 down to 45-44 win. Fantastic games of the tube today. WV and VT was a good game also. Toggling between two games all day…

UCLA?….we got to get good in a hurry….

  31. NorthShoreFan September 3, 2017 7:24 pm

Yup, it was a…(excuse me)…inyoface comeback with Rosen in control. If you get to see a replay check it out..awesome win.

This is absolutely NO excuse not to stream.

Spectrum seems to keep digging with their explanation here.

Shoving down their innane “promise to make and promises to keep” when they messed up royally with the ONE presentation that shouldnhave buttressed the brand!

Make your promises. Keep your promises, Spectrum.

Question for Coach Rolo: The stickers on the helmets – what are they? They look like either leaves, canoe paddles, or a Hawaiian weapon. Btw, glad the stickers are back! What are they awarded for?

  36. cappie the dog September 3, 2017 8:40 pm

The UCLA comeback is the best thing that could have happened to Hawaii.

After an emotional victory against a quality opponent, there is going to be a letdown.

UCLA is going to be overconfident.

In short order, the game will be close at the half; the coach will go ballistic in the locker room: And then UCLA will eventually pull away in the 4th quarter.

Overall, I think the game will be closer because of how the Bruins won.

    UCLA 45
    Hawaii 31

  37. Chicken Grease September 3, 2017 8:51 pm

Darn, cappie. You are certainly a realist.

I was happy watching the UCLA v. Texas A&M game. Figuring UH would fare thee well if a UCLA is playing like this. Like watching Die Hard with the Warriors as McClane. Cheering him on.

Then it turned into A Serbian Film. šŸ˜³

Start directing your positivity to UH WARRIORS NOW, Hawaii fans!!!!!

  38. H-Man September 3, 2017 10:20 pm

Great game! Two wins down and only 4 more to go to get a berth in a bowl game. Next week at Ucla will be tough. In fact the next three games are probably the toughest block of games on the schedule. Hopefully we can get at least one win in the next 3 games. Go Bows!

  43. oldtimer808 September 4, 2017 6:45 am

When it comes to UH football predictions, I never go against the home team so UH 32 UCLA 30. As far as Spectrum doing the UH Wahine Volleyball matches, the over head video camera filming has got to go. This was never done in previous years and I always appreciated the camera work done prior to Spectrum’s take over. The NCAA tournament also does over head video filming to my dismay because the optics in my humble opinion does not present the match properly. I always thought that Oceanic did the best camera work during the volleyball games until now.
