Warriors finish preseason strong

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — The Warriors held their final preseason practice today on a neighboring Division II campus.

It was a solid 90-minute practice, which concluded with Dru Brown’s 28-yard scoring pass to wideout Ammon Barker in the 2-minute drill. Ryan Meskell also launched two field goals from 40 yards as the Warriors worked on quick substitutions.

Rolovich said red-zone scoring, third-down conversions and fewer penalties were the trifecta of focus this preseason.

The Warriors will have a walk-through session to get loose and clean up some schemes in advance of Saturday’s season opener against UMass.

After practice, the Warriors visited the Basketball Hall of Fame.

    odda kine news …

Former University of Hawaii football coach June Jones has been promoted to head coach of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, the Canadian Football League team announced today.

Jones joined the Tiger-Cats as assistant head coach on Aug. 2. He was appointed Hamilton head coach by vice president of football operations Kent Austin, who stepped down as head coach with the Tiger-Cats in the midst of an 0-8 start.

“June and I have established a great relationship, and I feel comfortable and very confident with him handling the on-field product moving forward,” Austin said in a statement from the team. “This organization, its fans and partners deserve a championship calibre team and we fully expect to work together to return us to that level.”

Jones went 76-41 in nine years at UH and led the Warriors to the 2008 Sugar Bowl before leaving for SMU. He served as offensive coordinator at Kapolei High School last year and was named director of athletic programs and development at Saint Louis School last December.

Ipu Man — thanks for tracking the predictions! I suggest you list the predictions from UH low scores to the highest. Of course, you need a second separate list if there are predictions for the other team to have the higher number.

Congrats to June Jones for his promotion to Head Coach in the CFL! His team is currently 0-8. Does JJ have another miracle remaining?

  12. What? August 24, 2017 4:23 pm

June Jones wanted to be a HC again. It’s good to see he is getting another chance. I guess he will have to give up his position as AD at St. Louis. Or, did he just sign a 9 month contract with the school?

What? From what I understand JJ’s only gone temporarily and will return to the AD position. However, this was when he left for the assistant coach position. Things might change.

Ok so practice is over-words get replaced by effort and results. UMass will give a great effort unless we put them in that place of “here we go again”. The offensive line is almost all new. Key defensive positions are a lot of new guys too. If we come out from the start playing up to potential I can see Warriors scoring 4 or five times on offense. Legi will be gaming and gambling on D. I like our chances and prefer underdog role even if it’s a couple of points. GoWarriors!!!!!

  17. What? August 24, 2017 6:28 pm

Thanks! In the end I think it all worked out. Matlin made the call. With a 7-7 season last season and a promising outlook for this season, Rolo could be on his way to starting very special with Hawaii football.

It’s just feels like there is hope again at the start of the season instead of hearing we need at least 2- 3 years to see progress. It’s exciting to see how the season will unfold.
