What’s next?

The Warriors have lost three in a row — the past two by a combined 107-16 — but still have that slim hope of receiving a bowl berth if they can win out and the bowls can’t find enough eligible teams.

This week, it’s Fresno State, the Warriors’ seventh road game of the season. Here’s a quick look:

> Every week, it seems, the Warriors face an imposing running challenge. Not so much this week. The Bulldogs are averaging 3.1 yards per rush. Leading running back Dontel James averages 3.3 yards per carry. But the Warriors’ own running game is mending. Diocemy Saint Juste and fullback Kaiwi Chung did not play against Boise State.

> The distance between Manoa and Fresno is about 2,500 miles. Easy, right? Well, that’s the direct distance. But there are no commercial non-stop flights between those destinations. That means UH will have another 3-hour bus ride after flying to the Coast. Things are never as easy as they seem.

> The Bulldogs are transitioning to a new coach. Jeff Tedford was hired the past week. Interim head coach Eric Kiesau will coach against UH. Tedford, who was serving as a consultant to Washington coach Craig Petersen this year, has coached quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, Trent Dilfer, David Carr, Akili Smith, Joey Harrington and Kyle Boller. Tedford agreed to five-year contract worth $7.9 million in total base pay, an average of $1.58 per year. If you’re scoring at home, Nick Rolovich earns $400,008 in annual base pay.

If Rolo gets UH to a hawaii bowl berth next year or by year 3, UH better cough up some cash to keep him and his assistants, or rolo will be gone. His salary is criminal.

  4. MattyBoy November 13, 2016 8:29 am

What’s next? How about a REAL Offensive and Defensive Coordinator. That’s what’s next!

  5. Maddog50 November 13, 2016 8:31 am

I hope for their own sake these players just focus on this week of prep and the game at hand, all the other stuff is a distraction and to me nonsense at this point. This roster loses 11 Senior contributors including a long snapper. We have at least 11 freshman playing various roles. I just want the Pride and Passion of Warrior football to show up at Fresno. Forget who they are and their record or situation. Here is a tip-Does anybody think that SDSU or BSU had anything but the game at hand in mind? Think not-time to find the true inner Warrior in this roster and put it on display Saturday! GoWarriors!!!

  6. H-Man November 13, 2016 8:32 am

Please, no more bowl talk for this year. With the manner of their last two losses, it would be an embarrassment for Hawaii to play in the Hawaii Bowl. If they showed better, I would be 100% behind them, but not now. Focus on finishing the season by winning the last two games and plan for next season. And yes, Flying O is correct. Nick Rolovich’s salary and that of his staff needs to be adjusted to be in line with the middle of the other Mountain West head coaches and staff. Time get in line with collegiate football as it is today.

  7. Old Diver November 13, 2016 8:35 am

Rolo has to keep on doing what he believes in doing minus showing frustration in front of the players. From experience going after reserves because the starters and coaches are outmatched is counterproductive to the teams long term goals.

  8. Akamai Okole November 13, 2016 8:46 am

    Great Morning All!

These past 2 games’ results indicate that this is not a “bowl team” but turning that around is solely up to the players.

As the Columnist quoted today, (paraphrasing) do the players approach the last 2 games as “we gotta play 2 more” or, “we get to play 2 more?”

Outmanned and outgunned, or not. The biggest “Aloha” the Seniors can give to the team is the 15 extra practices that will come along with a bowl bid and the edge it gives the program going forward.

  9. Akamai Okole November 13, 2016 8:48 am

    OD,

It’s his style. No hold back, fully transparent.

Maybe the message is to the starters that they gotta take ownership/responsibility for the entire team…on and off the field.

  10. Akamai Okole November 13, 2016 8:49 am

Titans taking it to the Packers.

Mariota gets his 1st TD responsible for and it’s already 21-0!

  11. Buffoman November 13, 2016 8:49 am

Hawaii’s situation is unique as we are the only institution that starts the budgeting process with a unique, unchangeable expense: travel subsidies.

That being said the challenge to attempting to have a competitive coaches salary is something that other A Ds do not have.

Calling out all die-hard Warrior fans: Join us this Sat in Fresno; sitting at the 40 yd line behind our UH bench. Text me at 415-324-0585. Come meet the father of Malachi Mageo & die-hard parents of Kody Afusia & Kody also.

  13. tom-warriornation November 13, 2016 9:13 am

Question: why wasn’t Paul Harris used in the SDSU game (think he played only one series in the 4th quarter)?

  14. Maddog50 November 13, 2016 9:18 am

Fresno either shows up rested and renewed after a bye or rusty and resigned, again it matters not. Regarding Coach Rolovich removing the bench….your in uniform your on the team your in the game mentally and emotionally. If you don’t know how to act you should question your commitment and figure out if your one of those that says “we’ve got to play two more or we get to play two more”. You build a team by rooting out those that are not committed so as not to distract those that are.

  15. Old Diver November 13, 2016 9:21 am

UH was playing catchup from the get go against SDSU. Harris is not the pass protection blocker that Lakalaka is.

  16. Former UH Athlete November 13, 2016 9:34 am

Ahh yes… Fresno, CA. The taint of the nation.

Farms, gangs, and plentiful source of Black Friday brawls at Walmart.

I’ll forgive the screwdriver incident since the level of play hasn’t been worthy of a rivalry the past several years.

  17. kev-1 November 13, 2016 9:38 am

Still talking about a bowl game? How about focus on being a more disciplined team that can make plays when they are handed to them and not make stupid mistakes when they hurt the most?

A better performance the past two games may not have changed the win/loss outcome, but at least we wouldn’t be scratching our heads so much now.

A bowl game would have been a great cap to Rolo’s first season. But this team just needs to learn how to compete week to week.

  18. BigWave96744 November 13, 2016 9:48 am

ST, Chris Petersen. Spell check must have put Craig

  19. BigWave96744 November 13, 2016 9:51 am

How much of Boise’s offensive success due to Zak Hill? One can only wonder what our offense would have looked like if Zak stayed. Oh well…..

  20. clyde November 13, 2016 10:18 am

In its present state (of mind and body), this team just as easily could beat Fresno State or lose, and the same goes for UMass. How about tabling bowl talk for another week or two? Regroup and focus on Fresno.

  21. islandman November 13, 2016 10:20 am

Zak is Co-Offensive coordinator/ QB coach with Scott Huff, Co-Offensive Coordinator/Offensive Line coach . Who calls the plays ?

  22. NorthShoreFan November 13, 2016 10:55 am

    Guud Morning Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
    Painful weekend….Wahine B-ball, Men-B-ball and then football.
    New week…hoping for new results.
Bench should have been provided for the Defense only…they played most of the game again.
I feel for Coach Rolo. To see a couple of dozen players not interested in the game would demoralize the ones who are playing and trying for a win. How do you adjust the attitude when you need the players to self motivate? Maybe scholies should be on the line for next year…not sure.
There was some bright spots…mainly Sanchez…doing a fantastic job!
Hoping Dru can let lose and just have fun playing. Don’t think too much. Trust your eyes and instincts.
    IMUA WARRIORS!

  23. 808 November 13, 2016 11:12 am

The offense needs to help out the defense. They cannot always depend on Rigoberto Sanchez to kick field goals for the team to score. He would need at least 12 field goals a game to keep them in the game and the defense would need to play lights out every game.

San Jose St puts up 31 on Boise St. Hawaii scores 16 points. Dru Brown started off well as a starter and has since cooled down. Of course it doesn’t help that his WR’s drop balls that are thrown their way.

Let’s see if Hawaii can finish the season strong with the next two games.

  24. Maddog50 November 13, 2016 11:25 am

Just an observation-BSU took cues from previous opponents and tightened up and crowded the line at LB level and secondary. Against SJSU and others they played bend don’t break and were off the ball. That pretty much explains what Paul Harris was able to do is get beyond the crowd and use his ability to get down the field. BSU played much more aggressively than they had against previous opponents.

  25. Balko November 13, 2016 11:33 am

I think we can forget about paying the coaches more money: KHON reported on the UH AD on 10/29/16 “This year’s deficit was $3.2 million, compared to $4.2 million in 2015.”

A bowl game will only exacerbate the problem by forcing the AD to pay the coaches bonuses and cover the cost of unsold tickets (likely a lot).

As for removing the benches during the game, ESPN had a video with their announcers chuckling about the lack of results removing the benches had on the play in the second half, and ended with video image of the the players sitting on folding chairs.

  26. Maddog50 November 13, 2016 11:55 am

Just for the record the game was on CBS. The folding chairs were for players in the game busting their butts to compete. For the record-also there are funds distributed for conference record performances and participation by the conferences and also APR performance so the revenue from the bowl season even goes to conference member schools at bowl time whether your in or not-

  27. islandman November 13, 2016 12:25 pm

19, Harsin calls the plays, except for 3rd down passing plays, which Zak calls. Zak is Co-Offensive Coordinator with the OL Coach at Boise.

  28. A-House November 13, 2016 1:15 pm

I would welcome more discipline by Coach Rolo and his staff, but it all starts with him

if scholarship players leave, give the scholar hips to those who give 100% all the time in practice

which leads to: if 15 scholarship players leave and 10 scholarships are given to current deserving players — can UH give out 30 scholarships for the 2107 recruiting class or are they stuck with 25 maximun for each year???

what happened to the Evansville football team where nearly every player/coach perished in the plane crash – were they restricted to 25 scholarships the following year?

  29. Willie November 13, 2016 1:54 pm

Front and center on the Star Advertiser sports page is the drop by Kemp. Please start using your hands as your 1st option in securing the ball. Last year he was awful on this technique, this year improved but looking the ball into the hands needs to become automatic.

So are the Warriors still “0 – fer ” on National televised games?

  30. burro sabio November 13, 2016 2:12 pm

Mr. A-House, it was the Evansville basketball team in that horrible incident. Are you thinking of Marshall (movie We Are Marshall)?

  31. z November 13, 2016 3:13 pm

    Befuddled.

  32. Huh? November 13, 2016 3:56 pm

    #28 A-****

You have convinced me that you now have moved in to the pole position of #1 troll.

Your criticism is insensitive to these young men who have come here to fulfill their dreams and get an education all the while they get to represent this university and this state.

A few were from the Chow regime and they needed to shake off the bad vibes of that era. Only 2 dozen came from Rolo’s time. Rolo and his entire staff have busted their butts trying to mold this motley crew to his standards. Anyone with any sense of football knowledge, leadership, and goals would know that only God could mold av100 pounds of clay into a miracle.

  33. Huh? November 13, 2016 4:02 pm

The past 4 years there was no rhyme or reason to the methodology on recruitment of football talent and of men of character.

If a kid sent video and said he wanted to be a warrior, he would be on the next plane.

Today, our staff cross checks double checks, watches hours of complete game video (not just highlighted stuff ).

This is going to take time.
If you are too impatient or just a troll. Then hop off the bus brother because there too many people with more heart that will wait patiently.

  34. Da Punchbowl Kid November 13, 2016 4:27 pm

Patience and persistence. The coaches know what’s gotta be done, the Warriors do to. Let’s look for a couple more wins to end the season and surprise everybody at how well the Warriors have done this season. The Warriors have come far, but must go further.

    GO WARRIORS!!!

  36. 808warriorfan November 13, 2016 6:16 pm

“Rolo” should tell the team anyone who doesn’t give 100% effort is off the team … granted these are Norm’s players who don’t know how to win and are reverting back to their “losing” ways … need to separate those who want to give effort regardless of talent and those who are wasting the teams’ time in trying to get back to glory

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS !!!!!

  37. 808 November 13, 2016 6:20 pm

If Hawaii can close out the season 6-7, that would be a good springboard for next year. As for a bowl game, it would be nice. But, finishing 6-7 would be a huge step in the right direction. They have already matched the most win total in a season for the last 4 seasons.

Win at Fresno St and the team will have 3 road wins plus more wins than the previous 4 seasons under the previous regime. Now that’s improvement. It’s a small improvement. But, the Rolo era could turn into a successful period in UH football history. The interesting thing about it is in 2-3 years, we will know the fruits their labor.

    —————-
The men’s basketball team is not off to a good start also. Let’s hope they can get on track before the start of conference play.

  38. sfogate November 13, 2016 6:27 pm

How much this team travels is not the issue. CAL traveled further than UH to Sydney and they won, so let’s stop using the travel as one of main excuses. If the team flew in just before game time, then yes this would be a factor but they don’t.
This is a building year and Rolo has done a good job.
Removing the benches: I understand why it was done (from the coach’s view point) and I see why the players sit on them. I am guessing the sitting players are the ones that never or very rarely see any playing time. You can only follow the coach around, for so long, before you see that no matter what happens on the field (WRs dropping passes) you will not get the nod to see what you can contribute.

  39. A-House November 13, 2016 7:09 pm

    burro:

correct amundo! Evansville BB team and Marshal football.

  40. A-House November 13, 2016 7:27 pm

    huh? #32:

#1 troll am I? because I criticize the coaches and question some of the players?

what is your criteria for being #1 troll??? pray tell what is so insensitive about wanting the coaches to create more discipline and players who cannot accept this position and leaving?

the only player I singled out yesterday was Kemp who has a bad habit of using his arms and body to catch passes – is this not true??????? if you were a NFL scout and touted him as a “sure thing” — wonder how the teams you represent feel when they see Kemp catching balls?

what has my criticism got to do with this being “insensitive” to young men who decide to play for UH???????

and you criticize me for having no sense of football knowledge, leadership, and goals just from several of my posts???

who are you to criticize me for stating my opinions on this blog????????

are you God to know who I am, how I think, my leadership skills, goal setting skills, etc?

your #33 states that there has been no rhyme of reason to UH recruiting? how do you know that? are you Chow? if so, then you may be correct!!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW, I will NOT hop off the bus that I have been riding since 1959 to present – why don’t you!!!!!!!!!!!

  41. ai-eee-soos November 13, 2016 7:37 pm

Errybody – go look at the moon !!! Time out, already.

  42. amela November 13, 2016 7:37 pm

I think if we had their players our coaches would look just as good as Mr. Hill.

  43. H-Man November 13, 2016 8:11 pm

“In Internet slang, a troll (/ˈtroʊl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people, by posting inflammatory,[1] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a newsgroup, forum, chat room, or blog) with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[2] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion,[3] often for their own amusement.” Wikipedia.

Huh? A-House was criticizing coach Rolo and his staff, not the players. And I don’t think his comment falls into the definition above. Remember, it was coach Rolo who was upset with some of his players’ behavior/demeanor during the game and as it turned out, asked the benches be turned over. Aloha Stadium personnel took it upon themselves to remove the benches. With this action, A-House surmises that some players may wish to transfer when facing tougher behavior expectations, but that would only amount to more scholarships being available above the annual NCAA limit of 25.

  44. Arcumfortis November 13, 2016 8:46 pm

I left the Boise State game at the end of the 3rd quarter. In my almost 30 years of being a season ticket holder that is my earliest departure. Not even Chow time drove me away so early. It was painful to watch. It’s been a hard year. Such a roller coaster of moments of promise and more moments of disappointment. We looked like a defeated team from the get-go on Saturday. I don’t know what to think anymore. Let’s hope we can pull it together and win the next game. At least it will create a spark of interest for the last home game with the chance of going to the Hawaii Bowl (though it would not be very satisfying to get there with a losing record). The fans’ patience has been pushed to the limit. I didn’t expect a win on Saturday but I did expect us to compete. The game seemed over before the 1st quarter ended. That was very disapointing. I know it will take time. I hope it will turn around. But I get fatigued watching awful football. I am not surprised that the blog has gotten edgy and contentious. I would prefer that we lay a beating on Fresno rather than ourselves. But I understand the frustration and feel it too.

Rating for NFL is down this season, not sure what it is with college football but it seems something is missing this year in football. Maybe it’s the long presidential election, lack of player excitement or seasonably warm weather.

  47. hilosupaman November 13, 2016 9:24 pm

Bowl game or not…. BEAT THE GUYS IN RED!!!

    #expecttowin

  48. Tempmanoa November 14, 2016 3:16 am

I like Rolo as a coach, but he is young and inexperienced. He needs to learn not to criticize the team and players publicly. It is proven scientfically that you get maximum perforamance out of people by being positive. But if you are going to be as negative as he has been over the last few losses, he needs to at least keep it private. His taking away the benches was ridiculed by sports media– including ESPN video even if they did not broadcast the game.

  49. iceebear November 14, 2016 7:21 am

All I can say is that if the team is now in a losing mentality funk akin to last year, then they could easily be beaten in both remaining games and that will even impact next year, having to re-institute any positive energy and attitude. Are the players even holding any counsel with each other about their performance or are the leaders of the team indifferent at this point?
