AP college preseason poll familiar at the top, Sunny at the bottom

By Dave Reardon on August 16, 2021

The top five of the Associated Press College Football Poll made me think of one of my favorite movies, “The Usual Suspects.” It’s Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson, Ohio State and Georgia, in that order. I’m among the 47 of the 63 voters who put the 2021 national champion Tide at No. 1 … you know, Nick Saban doesn’t rebuild, he simply reloads. They went 13-0 last year for Bama’s sixth national crown under Saban. The rest of the No. 1 votes […]

Live football blog: Hawaii vs. San Jose State

By Stephen Tsai on December 5, 2020

Nick Starkel threw two scoring passes and Tyler Nevens rushed for two touchdowns to lift unbeaten San Jose State to its fifth victory in a row. The Spartans are atop the Mountain West with a game remaining in this eight-week season. Boise State’s game was canceled this week, leaving the Broncos with a 4-0 record against league opponents. There were concerns about the status of this game all week. Santa Clara County’s coronavirus-related restrictions forced the game to relocate from […]

ON THIS DATE IN 1984: ‘The Human Wave’ hits Hawaii for the first time

By Jerry Campany on October 27, 2020

Hawaii fans found a unique, for the islands at least, way to celebrate a five-game winning streak on this date in 1984. The Rainbows improved to 5-3 with a key defensive stand in a 16-10 win over San Diego State in front of an Aloha Stadium crowd of 42,000. That crowd did something Honolulu Advertiser reporter Stephen Tsai did not expect. A ripple began in the North end zone early in the second quarter and by the time it returned […]

Clickbait warning: UH vs. FSU in Hawaii Bowl

By Dave Reardon on December 3, 2017

Yeah, it’s actually that other UH … the University of Houston, not the University of Hawaii. The other team is Fresno State University, not Florida State University. With a 3-9 record, Hawaii was way short of bowl eligibility — even in these days of allowing teams with records under .500 to play in postseason. The Bulldogs (9-4) vs. the Cougars (7-4) actually looks like a pretty good matchup — not bad considering what passes for bowl teams these days. The […]

How I voted in the AP poll after Week 3, with comments

By Dave Reardon on September 18, 2017

Yes, I was “on” Mississippi State ahead of the crowd (because I like their quarterback, Nick Fitzgerald, and their defense). But I was also “on” Tulsa and Appalachian State in the preseason poll … and I was “on” LSU, which MSU trounced, ranking it higher than just about everyone else. And who knows? Georgia could crush the Bulldogs this week. For the full Associated Press Top 25, go here. 1. Alabama (3-0) The Tide’s SEC opener didn’t look very challenging […]
