    Coach Rolo,

Is our special teams ever going to return a punt? Is it by design that we always seem to fair catch? Is our punt return scheme that bad? Seems like such a waste and a missed opportunity to turn momentum and put our offense in good field position rather than fair catching or letting the ball bounce inside the UH 10 yard line each time putting our offense in a hole. Your former teammate Chad Owens was such a game changer.

Coach Rolo I know you can’t mention specifics but just wanted to know if local recruiting has picked up with some of the success the team has experienced this season?

  3. OrtKapolei November 21, 2016 2:17 pm

    Aloha Coach Rolo,
In this Fresno St game, I noticed about 3-4 plays where Dru would turn around and said something to Paul Harris before the ball snap and Dru handed the ball to Paul. I could guess that a run play was coming. I am sure the defense can too. Those 3-4 plays resulted in the run that were stopped behind the line. Could Dru tell his running back ahead of time to make it hard to guess?

    Question:
Is there something special you’d like us fans to do during the last game to help pump up the players?

I’d really like to see the team emotional and excited to play this Saturday. I missed seeing that in them the past few games.

I recently saw a former stadium worker “pan-handling”. She was laid off a couple of years ago since the stadium downsized staff due to the reduction in attendance. (I think she is trying to get other employment.) I gave her some money and prayed for her.
It reminded me how the success of this football team can affect people’s lives. I see good things happening in this team’s future – Thank you coaches!

  5. NotNasti November 21, 2016 2:29 pm

A-House, you are starting to sound more like an A-Hole. My daughter (a student) went with her civil engineering club, and they had more than 30 students just from their club alone She said it was pretty crowded, compared to other games. I went to buy food during half-time, and the concession area near the student section was impassible, with hundreds of students milling around, drinking and having a good time. I know you are frustrated that we are not piling up the victories and points, but so are the coaches. Rolovich said that he is not satisfied with how the season has turned out. He said he was hoping to pull a “June Jones” biggest turnaround type of year. He said they should have had two more victories, and competed better against SDS and BSU. A healthy DSJ during this stretch would have made a difference, I believe.

  6. azwarrior22 November 21, 2016 2:32 pm

Are you re-evaluating the OC position, possibly re-uniting with JJ?

  9. Down with... November 21, 2016 3:01 pm

Will Brian Smith be the OC next year? Will Mayur Chaudhari be the ST coach next year?

  10. warriorsanddolphins November 21, 2016 3:16 pm

Has Oceanic not streaming the games for the mainland have a negative impact on recruiting? Will Oceanic stream the games next year?

  11. H-Man November 21, 2016 3:18 pm

Not Nasti, what game was that? The only game where hundreds of students attended was homecoming (UNLV). But since the Warriors lost that game, the students have not been showing up. A-House was being facetious when he said he saw one student (Boise St game). I saw maybe a couple dozen (two groups of maybe 12 students). Or maybe they were on the Makai side instead of their normal location on the Mauka sideline. As it turned out, it didn’t matter that Boise St had the sun all game long, winning 52-16. Meanwhile, Rolo had the benches removed on the Warriors’ sideline. What I did not understand was why the cheer leading squad remained at their normal makai location for the Boise St game, right alongside the Boise St team.

  12. Derek November 21, 2016 3:43 pm

Coach, I see very few special plays during the game, i.e. reverses, double reverse, flea flicker, read option pass, screen passes, RB or WR passes. I’m sure there’s more. Why and Why not? Even Dave Baldwin threw a TD pass to Russell Wilson yesterday in the Seahawk win, so these things do work when practiced and executed well.

  13. Akamai Okole November 21, 2016 3:46 pm

    Great Afternoon All!

    Mass Annihilation…

  14. Akamai Okole November 21, 2016 3:48 pm

    Coach Rolo,

What would be your pitch to sway an SEC commit like, hmmm….say, one to Alabama to stay in Hawaii and play? 😎

  15. SteveM November 21, 2016 3:49 pm

    RE: #11
H-Man — I agree it does not matter that much for a football team to be in the sun, except for August/September. It matters to the UH fans paying $$$ for their mauka seats when they do not want to work on their tans.

Sitting on the makai sidelines at the Boise game, I recall seeing the UH cheer leaders on our side the entire 2nd half. They started in their usual mauka sideline corner, but the empty student section probably prompted a switch. Empty seats don’t cheer. At least they got cheers going on our side. The Rainbow Dancers stayed in the end zone opposite the band.

  16. NotNasti November 21, 2016 3:58 pm

A-House was referring to the Homecoming game. He said he counted only 9 students with his binocs.

  17. NotNasti November 21, 2016 4:06 pm

H-Man, my seats are on the mauka sidelines. I sat on the makai side. I WAS NOT going to sit in the sun. I suspect most students did the same as well. Actually if you looked only at the makai side, it looked like 35K in the stands, and then turned around and looked at the mauka side, it looked like 5K (or less) in the stands. A 2:00 p.m. game was riduculous. I think it hurt the gate.

  18. Old School Dave November 21, 2016 4:15 pm

Stay on course, coach! Mahalo for all you’ve done since taking over. I remember when local fans were calling for OCs such as Dave Fagg and even Paul Johnson to get fired. Some things never change here. Just saying.

  19. Old School Dave November 21, 2016 4:27 pm

Does UH have a nutritional fuel station for its players, like say, Boise State’s? Hope that you can get more in terms of resources in the near future to give UH a fighting chance with MWC schools like SDSU and Boise State.

  25. clyde November 21, 2016 5:00 pm

Question for Coach Rolo: Trailing 10-7 on 3rd-and-20 at midfield to start the fourth quarter, and Dru Brown runs a quarterback draw that results in a 4-yard loss. The play selection seemed rather conservative. Was there a real expectation that a QB draw could result in a first down, or did down-and-distance dictate the call because you would likely punt on fourth down?

  26. Not an Expert November 21, 2016 5:39 pm

It appears true freshmen has had playing time. Of the true freshmen how many did not qualify for a redshirt year and what are the players name? I am guessing 2-3 do not qualify as redshirts this year.

Last year’s class I believe is a good class and this year the hope is that it will be better and another handful of recruits may start as true freshmen. With the chance of getting better athletes do you believe that UH will contend for the title in year 3 or 4 of your tenure here?

  27. warriorsanddolphins November 21, 2016 5:44 pm

What is exactly wrong with Devan Stubblefield and Danny Lewis? Are they being disciplined or are they really hurt? I ask this because they would usually receive alot
of game time. Almost no word is said about them.

  28. al November 21, 2016 5:56 pm

    A house…

A couple of years ago we made a wager of 50 clams in passing at the Main Street Station lobby. Of course I had bet that UH would cover. But, I did give you a “pass”.

  29. Maddog50 November 21, 2016 5:58 pm

Just read Na Koa lunch recap. Glad # 4 on defense will be eligible to play. Young man has a lot of promise plays hard and is a true freshman. No overreaction to the infraction that let to his ejection-Good call Coach

  30. Jenny Talls November 21, 2016 6:06 pm

Coach, you’re all about embracing the Hawaii culture, but why do I see Eran Ganot wearing Aloha shirts while you strut along the sidelines in them generic Under Armour polos???

  33. Pride Rock November 21, 2016 6:26 pm

First, June Jones is pau. Let’s not mention that guy anymore. He had his time, dis is the Rolo era. We don’t need June Jones to bring our program back. As for a question though, Will you shave that mug come December?

  34. Boolakanaka November 21, 2016 6:29 pm

Who are the 2-3 local recruits, from this year’s graduating class, that are “must haves” for our program, notwithstanding interest from other D1 programs?

  35. Markazulu November 21, 2016 6:33 pm

Whats the biggest lesson you learned so far as a head coach?

With one game left in the season has any player shocked you with their play?

    Coach,

How many mid-year JC transfers (particularly at the DB positions) would be ideal to bring in to join the team next semester?

Also, how many greyshirts are scheduled to join the team next semester?

    Coach,

What is the status of Class of 2016 signee Marcus Armstrong-Brown?

  42. Mytake November 21, 2016 7:33 pm

My son is a UH student and watches the games on PPV. He has seen most of the games. I guess what I’m saying is although the students aren’t there physically, they may be there in spirit.

  43. cocobean November 21, 2016 7:53 pm

I am not advocating JJ for OC. But….whats the possibility of hiring him as an offensive consultant to evaluate and make recommendations?

Have him review game films and evaluate game plans, play calling, play execution, personnel, etc. etc.

Have him make recommendations to improve/soup up the current offense. Have him attend Spring ball to help implement those recommendations.

I believe a set of experienced eyes from the outside looking in may be able to see things people involved in the situation are unable to see. The remarks I hear from Brian and Stutz seems to me they are mainly focusing on play execution looking for missed blocks, misreads, missed assignments and pointing them out as why the play didn’t work. A lot of times the real correction is recognizing what thing in common the various defenses have been doing to stop the run and game plan to counter what defenses have been doing.

  44. Blu808 November 21, 2016 8:30 pm

Which player or players have surprised you with the impact that they have made on the field this season?

  45. Blu808 November 21, 2016 8:48 pm

Can the University of Hawaii give the Kahuku fans free admission to sit in the unoccupied student section of the stadium every game to do there haka?

  46. Paniolo November 21, 2016 9:02 pm

    1. Will Coach Rolovich make any staff changes after the season is over?
    2. Most Warrior fans would like to see Brian Smith assign to another position because he is not suited for Warrior football play calling. Will Coach Rolo make that change?

  47. SlippaRippa November 22, 2016 12:14 am

#45 We need as many Kahuku players AND fans as we can get!

  48. skycap November 22, 2016 5:51 am

Hi Coach I think that you should look into OC 16 football contract you will never attract fans to the games. How much Fans actually buys pay per view??? Maybe only Sports Bars, For me it worth waiting next day for replay. Watching live games is better, Please look at K5 Sports, K5 Sports, K5 Sport, so we can watch all the Football Games for Free, Free, Free,

  49. Old coach November 22, 2016 6:33 am

Many players go to Alabama few play! Ask Blake Barnett.
Coach your real job this season was to take this program from Bad to Ok, which you did!
Now the the real job begins, how do you go from occasionally great to consistently good?
How can you recruit kids from the mainland when grandma can’t watch the game because of PPV?

  50. 808SEC November 22, 2016 7:06 am

    Old Coach #49

Living on the mainland, I’ve been asking that same question for awhile. Hard to get recruits from the mainland to play for a team they don’t see, or only see when they are getting beat handily on national TV.

  51. Ipu Man November 22, 2016 7:23 am

    Coach, don’t shave your beard.
    Looking good.
Much better than your 4’oclock shadow
    morning noon and night.
    🙂

  52. A-House November 22, 2016 7:43 am

    al-san:

do not honestly remember our discussion at Main Street Station – best I can recall is seeing you at your tailgate 3 or 4 years ago

well on my way to dementia heaven!

  53. A-House November 22, 2016 7:46 am

    Coach:

running between the tackles seem to be a “must” for college and pro-teams even when the opponent has stacked it with 7 of 8 players in the “box”?

any special reason? seems like a low % call.

  54. A-House November 22, 2016 7:47 am

hope UH wins on Saturday — we want to attend the Hawaii Bowl!

    OUT!

  55. UH Fan for Life November 22, 2016 8:03 am

Coach Rolo, congratulations to your staff and the team for getting the tough road win against Fresno. We are thankful that you are leading the team, and appreciate the effort put in by the staff and players on turning around the program’s direction. This Thanksgiving, what are you most thankful for?

  56. Brantamas November 22, 2016 8:42 am

Is it true that if Hawaii participates in a post season game the MWC will get $300,000 and UH will get $300,000 if they meet the APR standard in football? If UH gets in the Hawaii bowl they should get more money besides the distribution from the bowl itself right? That would be good for the budget or maybe new uniforms, equipment, etc.

  57. oldtimer808 November 22, 2016 9:28 am

You seem to be head strong about trying to balance running and passing. If we are going to use running plays, than shouldn’t we try to run wider to open up the middle. It seems like all the teams are stacking the middle anticipating our running plays. I often scratch my head when the commitment to the passing game or the run and shoot becomes secondary. You were successful on that last drive with the run and shoot. Anyway you’re the coach and you know better and I commend you and your staff for the football culture that you have established. I wish you continued success.

  58. al November 22, 2016 9:35 am

A house how old are you anyway?

  59. al November 22, 2016 9:36 am

Ask your wife. She and my wife were both present.

  60. Rodney November 22, 2016 9:50 am

Why do fans keep asking why
OC s run the ball between the
    tackles.geeeezzz!!!!!

  61. al November 22, 2016 10:01 am

    Rodney @59…
    Exactly!

  62. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 22, 2016 10:11 am

    Coach,

Is Brian Smith in total control of offensive play calling DURING games? If not, how is it delegated and to whom is it delegated?

  63. Old Diver November 22, 2016 10:21 am

Coach, was there a weakness on the Fresno special teams offensive line you spotted or was it just an Herculean effort by the defense line to block Fresno States field goal attempt?

  64. al November 22, 2016 10:28 am

    #55…finally some sanity here.

  65. DaveLetterMan November 22, 2016 10:35 am

    Morning Tsaikos!
Old Diver – check out today’s SA. In the article it explains how the play was drawn up and then executed.

  66. al November 22, 2016 10:41 am

    Rolo…
How ironic is it that in just one year you have already lead our team to 5 wins which is half as many as your predecessor* had in four seasons.. AND we still have two games to go.

*he the guy who didn’t hire you.

  67. Scott November 22, 2016 10:52 am

Congrats on the Fresno win! Big game this weekend…Is there a way fire up the players? In the past couple of games (Boise & Fresno), they seemed to be sluggish. I remember when you (Coach Rolo) were playing the team would always come out fired up. Perhaps it’s time to bust out the film of the BYU game in which you lit them up. Oh, those were fun times!!!

  68. Scott November 22, 2016 10:57 am

Is there way to open up the playbook? The offense seems to flow better when you spread out the field and throw the ball all over (i.e. last drive against Fresno). Another thing, how come we don’t see screens, shovels, and passes to the running backs?

Thank you. Good luck this weekend against UMass!!!
