Game day: San Diego State

SAN DIEGO — Maybe it’s the weather (crispy cool but not brrr) or this gorgeous destination city. But everyone, including the coaches, appears to be in a really happy mood. Or maybe they know something the sleepy media don’t know. Anyway, it’s game day.

> As Donnel Pumphrey ascends the NCAA’s career rushing chart, it is interesting to note how many on the leader board played against the Warriors: Ron Dayne (6,397 yards), Ricky Williams (6,279), Charles White (5,598), LaDainian Tomlinson (5,263), Montee Ball (5,140), and LaMichael James (5,082). The top 15 does not include Marshall Faulk or Michael Bennett.

> In last year’s meeting, Steven Lakalaka rushed six times for 14 yards. His brother Ronley Lakalaka made one tackle on kickoff coverage.

> It’s a homecoming game for the Aztecs.

I pray no injuries to both teams but a victory for UH.

    Amen.

    No turnovers today!

  5. Bugaz November 5, 2016 8:01 am

Best of luck to our beloved Warriors!!!

  6. cocobean November 5, 2016 9:53 am

Does anyone else have the feeling Rolo will dip into his gadget bag and pull out a trick play or two? I have a mean feeling he has plays to take advantage of Ewaliko’s speed and Ursua’s play making ability.

SDSU has a military academy size defense stocked with athletes that can run.

  7. Down with... November 5, 2016 10:15 am

Good luck boys fight hard and make Hawaii proud. Good luck coaches. Hope everyone stays healthy and has a safe trip. Beat san diego!!! Go bows!!!

  8. kev-1 November 5, 2016 10:25 am

Why not spoil sdsu’s homecoming? This UH team has proven capable of being road warriors. A win today would be huge for the future.

  9. Inyoface November 5, 2016 10:35 am

We were 21 point underdogs at Air Force. Let’s do this!!

Warriors gotta be home wreckers today! Take down the Aztecs in their house!

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    CONQUER THE AZTECS!!!

  13. cappie the dog November 5, 2016 1:03 pm

    Way to go Niumatalolo!!!

    C’mon, UH!

    P*ss off Craig Thompson!

Sting, you’ve got to play “King of Pain” at your concerts.

  14. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:10 pm

Watching this game on Oceanic Time Warner-Spectrum digital channel 247. Hhahaah. Take THAT, commercial-filled UH football pay-per-view.

The main play-by-play guy sounds a lot like Kanoa Leahy. And whoever this guy is, he is getting the Hawaiian names correctly. Wonder if either or both unnerves what certainly must be a viewing Kanoa Leahy right now.

    Aztecs. First tonscore 7-0.

  15. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:20 pm

Man. The local Hawaii commercials just CANNOT butt out of the national network coverage if UH games. Sickening. I wanna start calling some of hese “local big businesses” a word that begins with “w” and ends in “es”.

  16. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:25 pm

Aztec band much better than UH’s. Crisp.

  17. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:28 pm

Hawaii defense doing a decent job.

  18. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:30 pm

Whew. Trayvon Henderson near Incredible Hulk-class slam COULD have been interpreted as targeting. Careful Warrior defense.

    Aztecs getting held back nicely.

  19. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:32 pm

Well. Not THAT held back apparently.

Aztecs up 14-0. Still firs’ quatah. Aztecs WB throwing well.

  20. Chicken Grease November 5, 2016 1:32 pm

    * QB. Not WB.

  21. Warrior Dave November 5, 2016 1:42 pm

Lakalaka got the start but running game is tough going

  22. Buffoman November 5, 2016 1:44 pm

Wonder how many penalties we have thus far. We’re self destructing and really getting out played. Seems the only guy who came ready to play is Henderson. Everyone else look slow and just not tackling. Pumphery is making yards at will.

Hopefully we’ll get better as the games progresses, or it will be ugly.

  23. warriorfan November 5, 2016 1:46 pm

Run up the middle, run up the middle, throw a 5 yard pass, punt…If I didnt know any better, it seems Norm Chow is calling the plays again..

Come on Rolo, open up the offense or this is going to be ugly real quick…..

  24. clyde November 5, 2016 1:50 pm

SDSU also running up the middle, but Pumphrey can bounce it outside once he’s through the inside gaps.

All right, a 3-and-out. All it took was for SDSU to sit Pumphrey for a series.

  25. Buffoman November 5, 2016 1:55 pm

Okay, that staredown resulted in that pick 6. 21-0. This looks like a beat down in the making.

  26. Whats up November 5, 2016 1:57 pm

Wow is Norm Chow calling the plays from the booth? This game is getting ugly… Rolochowvich better adjust or this is going another national TV embarresment

  27. Kapahulu November 5, 2016 2:00 pm

    Buffoman:
Hawaii 5 penalties for 39 yards.

  28. Kapahulu November 5, 2016 2:01 pm

Make that 6 penalties for 44 yards.

  29. Buffoman November 5, 2016 2:02 pm

We are imploding with untimely penalties. If we were hoping for a win here, if we continue to play this way, it will be further out of reach than it already is.

  30. azwarrior22 November 5, 2016 2:06 pm

Why does the offense keep trying to force the run? It’s not working.

  31. azwarrior22 November 5, 2016 2:07 pm

    JJ for offensive coordinator.

  32. Buffoman November 5, 2016 2:19 pm

#31 maybe because when we pass on this team there is a good chance we’ll be intercepted. Brown is doing the stare down and we’ve paid for it. Team just not clicking.

Penalties are a telltale sign that things are not in sync.

  33. oneseason November 5, 2016 2:22 pm

Let’s hope halftime adjustments and reflections can rebuild the teams composure.

  34. Ipu Man November 5, 2016 2:26 pm

National TV? What network? Channel 2 not.
Channel 4(6) not. Channel 7/8 Not.
    ESPN?

  35. oneseason November 5, 2016 2:33 pm

#34 … shows as CBS Sports Network on screen.

  36. Buffoman November 5, 2016 2:35 pm

    Wow, they are rolling! 27-0.

  37. z November 5, 2016 2:40 pm

This is a measure of where our team is and how far we got to go to be a really good team. Still making the same old mistakes that we were earlier in the season.

  38. NorthShoreFan November 5, 2016 2:41 pm

    Guud Afternoon Tsaikos…Bootiful Day!
Anyhoo, got to re-group for second half. Don’t seem to be mentally ready to play a good team. Too many mental mistakes and special team has got to be special.
SD defense is fast. Might be able to use that against them.
That FG hurt. Down 4 scores at the half is not what makes for winning football.
    Come on Warriors!…IMUA!
Defense is starting to get up to speed. Offense need to focus!

  39. clyde November 5, 2016 2:58 pm

Think the 24-0 deficit is insurmountable although the defense has picked it up. Give Brown the opening series of the second half and if the offense is still ineffective, then maybe try another QB? In no way putting the blame on Brown as there are enough mistakes to go around the whole team.

  40. MattyBoy November 5, 2016 3:07 pm

Wow has Rolo not learned yet that his last football game included horrible offensive football and yet he continues to allow the same boring vanilla offense this game against the Aztecs today? Unreal!!! Horrible to watch.

  41. z November 5, 2016 3:08 pm

    We need new qb coach.

  42. H-Man November 5, 2016 3:13 pm

I was watching the Alabama-LSU game, then switched back to the Hawaii game just in time to see Zwahlen throw an interception.

  43. Buffoman November 5, 2016 3:25 pm

AZ is playing as I would expect a player to play in his first go round. San Diego has a terrific defense. They are doing well to make us look bad on offense.

  44. z November 5, 2016 3:26 pm

I told you about Penny. Oh well.

  45. Buffoman November 5, 2016 3:28 pm

Another score. 34-0. Don’t know if the team can bounce back from such a beat down. Let’s see what the team is made of.

  46. NorthShoreFan November 5, 2016 3:30 pm

We’ll see who the ones of offense really want to play next week. If anything, the offense should be well rested for next week.

  47. Buffoman November 5, 2016 3:50 pm

Like a hot knife through butter. Touchdown, 41-0. This is brutal.

  48. Buffoman November 5, 2016 3:59 pm

    Wow, wow! Pick 6, 48-0!

  49. azwarrior22 November 5, 2016 4:20 pm

    JJ for offensive coordinator

  50. Balko November 5, 2016 4:27 pm

It is almost as if there is a hidden job requirement that the UH head football coach must promise to fail miserably, and humiliate the school when on network TV.

One consistency from Chow to Rolo is the blindness to the fact that as the season matures, the opponents have more film and statistics to game plan against. Chow and Rolo seem to have a steadfast belief that the opposing teams don’t pay attention to tendencies and game film.

I hope the degenerate gamblers in the crowd took the over, as SDSU covered that by themselves.

  51. Warrior Fan November 5, 2016 4:29 pm

SDSU is the top team in our conference and we see why. UH is on the right track. This is Rolo’s first year w/the same team Chow has and already we’ve seen improvement. We’re in good hands. Be patient . #GoWarriors

  52. Warrior Dave November 5, 2016 4:31 pm

3rd down plays: Receivers need to run patterns beyond the 1st down marker. Drives me crazy.

  53. z November 5, 2016 4:34 pm

    Goose egg.

  54. z November 5, 2016 4:37 pm

LSU defense holding Bama to zero going into the 4th quarter.

  55. GaWarrior7 November 5, 2016 4:39 pm

This is a joke!!!!!!! Didn’t we fire Norm Chow as our OC? Stutz is doing a $h!tting job as wr coach and we will never consistently win with Brian Smith our OC. Nick either start calling plays or hire jj as your OC. Thanks again for the national embarrassment guys. It’s bad enough that the pieces of crap that run oceanic cable won’t let us stream the games that we can actually compete in, that the only ones we can see we are seen as a national joke. Maybe next week we can keep Boise State under 70. PATHETIC!!!!!!!!!

  56. z November 5, 2016 4:44 pm

    Not any more.

  57. cocobean November 5, 2016 4:48 pm

Today it seemed like we were a car that ran over a spike strip. It’s hard to go far with four flat tires – offense/defense/special teams/coaching. Flat, flat, flat and flat. It happens every now and then to a rebuilding team. Best thing for the team and fans is to take the one snap and clear approach.

  58. 808 November 5, 2016 5:06 pm

    #7 (yesterday’s post),

56 – 14 you say? You were close. Oh wait you meant in favor of Hawaii.

This game showed how far away Hawaii is from the top of the conference. SDSU is just bigger, stronger and faster. They will win the conference this year. If they run the table, maybe they can represent the group of 5 in one of the new years day bowls.

I just hope Hawaii can keep it close at home against Boise state. and finish the season with 2 wins against Fresno St and UMass.

  59. H-Man November 5, 2016 5:41 pm

Dru Brown didn’t seem like the same quarterback when he directed wins against Nevada and San Jose St. And it wasn’t all SDSU’s defense. His throws are different, He missed open receivers,,,, It wouldn’t have made a difference in the W/L column, but they pitched an egg. That was disappointing most of all.

  60. azwarrior22 November 5, 2016 6:06 pm

In both of the last 2 games, we tried to force the run when it wasn’t there. Our offense needs to be more creative when the run is not there.

I applaud making the QB switch in the second half but I think it was a mistake to take him out after 2 series.

  61. whitey November 5, 2016 6:15 pm

am glad to hear that AZ was able to play.

  62. whitey November 5, 2016 6:21 pm

does it make a difference who recruited the present warriors?? I don’t think so, what makes a difference is the abilities of the coaching staff to coach and guide them. maybe they need to shuffle some of the coaches around like how they move the players around. maybe a coach is in the wrong position.

  63. 3-Prong November 5, 2016 6:32 pm

Aaron Z seems to have a much stronger arm than Dru. Hard to say who is the more accurate passer. Guessing that Rolo put in AAron because passing windows were tighter and more zip was required to squeeze the passes in there.

Time to get back up and get ready for Boise.

    Go Bows!

  64. Shoko November 5, 2016 7:16 pm

Yup. Like I said earlier, coaches are pleasuring themselves in the booth more than making actual game plans.

  65. cappie the dog November 5, 2016 7:19 pm

It’s not Coach Rolovich’s fault that his offensive coordinator left for Boise State.

  66. Buffoman November 5, 2016 7:31 pm

#64 same thing happened to Chow. It is what it is.

  67. 808 November 5, 2016 7:38 pm

Since the coaches are being blamed for this loss and the other two close losses to unlv and new mexico, why don’t we throw Chow into the mix of people to blame also.

San Diego State was just better, faster and stronger than Hawaii. Even if Hawaii played a near perfect game, the result of a loss would probably still be the same.

Maybe it will take season 2 of the Rolo era to have a turn around season and reach a bowl game.

  68. Buffoman November 5, 2016 9:00 pm

Watching the high school games, where is Tua’ s brother thinking of going after he graduates from Kapolei? He throws a very nice ball and does not stare down his receivers.

  69. cocobean November 5, 2016 9:18 pm

#62. I think Rolo was looking for a spark to start the second half. He did the same thing in the Michigan and Arizona games. In both games we were trailing so badly at half time that he gave the backup QB(Brown) a chance to get some game experience with the possibility of sparking the offense.

Aaron does have a stronger arm than Dru but he appeared to be throwing rather than passing the ball. He looked like he was trying to put extra zip on the ball on every throw sacrificing accuracy.

  70. z November 5, 2016 9:45 pm

JJs play calling looking good against Punahoe. Kapolei goes up in the 3rd quarter 20 – 14.

  71. burro sabio November 5, 2016 10:30 pm

Shoko are you projecting what you want to be doing or do you simply have no class?

  72. Rodney November 5, 2016 10:47 pm

    Wow Hurricanes of Kapolei
    What a game.
    Miss JJ

  73. H-Man November 5, 2016 11:28 pm

Yup, I too was surprised how good the Kapolei QB and Receivers were. The throws and catches the players were making are not what you expect from high school players. JJ is doing a good job coaching their offense.

  74. Ohana Hawaii November 6, 2016 12:37 am

Awww! Hey Warriors! If you’re going to lose a game! Don’t be like Michigan! And now against San Diego State Crap!. It’s going the same like this against Boise State?. I will be surprised that Boise State is favorite by 35 point. Come on let play harder then before!. Bowl game? I don’t think so!

Washington Huskies vs Alabama Crimsontide for the National Championship
    Winner! Huskies

Kapolei Hurricanes vs St Louis Crusaders for the State Championship
    Winner! Crusaders

Donald Trump vs Hillary Clinton for President of the United States of America
Winner! needs to turn to God and it’s people to continually pray for it’s leader.

Therefore, I hate pride and arrogance,
    corruption and perverse speech.

  78. Ohana Hawaii November 6, 2016 4:50 am

Sorry! It will be a big chance that Washington get in the college playoff!. Because of their season schedule it wasn’t a strong season for them playing with low levels teams for the non conference games. Not like other teams in the top 10. If that happens a lot’s of Universities will complete to NCAA !. It’s the same like Baylor too!. If that happens University of Hawaii might have chance to reschedule the football schedule for future! Playing teams like Alabama, Oklahoma, Louisiana State, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, North Carolina, Georgia, Texas A&M, or other large conference!. They’re might or will beat Hawaii by 65 or 70 point. That way to show the NCAA why should they have the right to play in the National title playoffs!. Maybe that what Hawaii fans want to see like what Michigan did to Hawaii this season. Because remember that lot’s of the big football program don’t hold back their scores on the score broad. I don’t to see Hawaii to losses by 67 or more. Yesterday was just lucky that San Diego State only score 55 point against the Warriors! Think if that was Baylor playing Hawaii? It might be between the 60 and 70. Because they don’t put in their second string players in until 1 minutes to play. So Good luck!

  79. Shoko November 6, 2016 5:59 am

Well, wasn’t able to watch the game last night but I did DVR it. However, looking at the box score and reading some of the comments, I might want to save myself the anguish.

It’s clear the Aztecs are playing at whole other level. How they lost to Southern Alabama is beyond comprehension. Even though SDSU isn’t ranked in the top 25, they are playing a lot better than Boise State and should be ranked above them, in my opinion.

Lempa’s defense is no where near where he probably wants it to be, but I think it’s good enough against teams that have struggled offensively like Nevada, SJSU and Fresno State. The MWC is more of a defensive-minded conference compared to the WAC, so it isn’t surprising to see former WAC members that are now in the West division having difficulty competing for conference championships.

Anyway, there seems to be another “Shoko” on this blog (post #46). Haven’t posted since the Air Force game. I think it’s time to change screen names, so if there is another post from Shoko, it’s not the original Shoko!

  80. H-Man November 6, 2016 6:37 am

Ohana Hawaii, following your logic, then the Alabama Crimson Tide should not be playing for the national championship because their non-conference games includes Western Kentucky, Kent St., and Chattanooga. I thought these teams weakened their overall schedule, but it does not seem to bother pollsters and the NCAA as Alabama is currently ranked No. 1. For teams in the SEC, Big 10, ACC and the Pac 12, conference games are so tough, it is understood that they need to schedule lesser opponents in preparing for their conference gauntlet. As for Hawaii’s 63-3 loss to Michigan, I don’t see it as an embarrassment when the Wolverines beat conference foes Rutgers 78-0 and Maryland 59-3. Michigan is simply a power-house team that can steamroll an average team.
