Darian “Stump” Godfrey, a former Texas all-state quarterback, has joined the Warriors.
He gained admission to UH a couple of weeks ago, arrived in Honolulu last night, and began attending classes this morning. He is scheduled undergo medical tests tonight, as well as attend an orientation session. He will be eligible to practice tomorrow, although, as part of NCAA transfer rules, he must redshirt this season. After that, he will have three years to play three seasons.
Godfrey played for New Mexico last year. Because that school did not issue a scholarship release to UH, Godfrey cannot receive a football scholarship from UH for the 2011-12 academic year. He will be eligible to go on scholarship next August.
He was named the 2009 Mr. Texas.
That year, he was the Texas 3A Offensive Player of the Year in leading Gilmer High to a 15-0 record.
He received multiple offers as a Gilmer senior (including from Oklahoma and Tennessee), but those schools wanted him as an “athlete.” He was recruited as a quarterback by New Mexico. UH coach Greg McMackin, who met with Godfrey for the first time this morning, said he will compete at quarterback.

The Warriors have found a way to elude the back-to-school rush: They will be practicing at 5 p.m. at Aloha Stadium.
The plan is to depart Manoa at 4:30 p.m.
Then again, they might hit the back-from-school rush.
The roster expands today, by about 18, and the injury list, we’re told, will decrease.
The newcomers who passed their physical examinations may practice today, but they are not permitted to wear pads until Wednesday.
