Manu-Olevao new assistant for Vulcans

apologies. just found this in pending from yesterday.

Former Wahine outside hitter Tai Manu-Olevao (2012-15) has joined Gene Kreiger’s staff at Hawaii-Hilo. Manu-Olevao was born in Hilo and joins Poli Olevao-Kahapea, who has been a volunteer assistant, on the bench.
Manu-Olevao had been playing professionally in the Philippines.

The Vulcans also added two Big West transfers in sophomores Brooke Earkman (OH, Long Beach State) and Bria Beale (OH, UC Irvine). The two will join the Vulcan squad when practice begins on August 5.

Is this guy a walk-on? No announcement from UH?
“…USA Volleyball announced this weekend that Hawai’i’s Brett Sheward and Lincoln Memorial’s Jacob Titus were selected to the U19 A1 National Training Team.

Sheward, a setter from Southern California, was named the All-Tournament Team at the 2017 USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championship with his indoor club team that competed in the 17 Open division. As a senior, he helped lead his high school team in May to its first regional championship in program history.”

    Congrats to Tai Manu-Olevao.

No official announcement but someone posted about him committing to Hawaii on Volleytalk awhile ago and Middlehitter.com has also listed him as a Hawaii commit for awhile.

He’s only 6′ so like Joe Worsley he’s on shorter side but I’d still be satisfied if he were half as good as Joe. Anybody seen him play? He, Devon Johnson (6’7″ OH), and Cole Hogland (6’5″ OH) made the Fab 50 list.

Next year at the setter position it will be Joe, Jackson Van Eekeren and Brett Sheward. Is Jayce Ashment coming back?

Next year the only position that isn’t 3+ players deep is L/DS. We have Gage Worsley and Nathan Yung. Is Jon Stanley Jr still coming to UH? I’m excited about seeing Gage at Libero but it’s a shame we’ll lose his serving.

Wonder what a assistant womens volleyball coach at UH hilo makes?
Hope it is a living wage.

After a certain date, UH seems to not announce any commits/signings. Is it because the prospects signed after the deadline and the commitments are not binding?

For the men’s, there was no formal announcement regarding Brett Sheward and also IVC Middle Blocker Matt August. I saw a photo of Matt with his UH shirt on at a signing ceremony put on by Irvine Valley College. I don’t recall anything on Hawaiiathletics.com regarding his signing at all.

The Sandbows also got a commit from Julia Scoles but no official word was put out regarding her commitment.

Then there are transfer to the UH Wahine volleyball team that was mentioned only on Volleytalk and no mention of them coming aboard on any official UH site, Sarah Liva and Leka Kiner-Falefa.

Wouldn’t be surprised if UH get another transfer or two without any type of announcement.

    4. Liva and Kiner-Falefa won’t have a press release since they are walk-ons. Only scholarship recruits and transfers are announced. Walk-ons, can, of course, walk off anytime before the season even starts.

However, Liva was mentioned in a hawaiiathletics.com article about the Moloka’i clinic.

This might be old news but I missed it when it came out; Saige Ka’aha’aina-Torres (‘Iolani 2018 grad) is headed to the Utah Utes as a setter. http://utahutes.com/news/2018/4/11/volleyball-adds-two-players-to-2018-roster.aspx?path=wvball

Was Sage ever recruited by Uh? I mean UH got a commit from Katie Long this past season she is probably the setter of the future. With Noreen still having two more years, I don’t think we were seriously after Sage. UH DO need someone to bridge that one year gap between Noreen and Katie though.

Noreen leaving after 2019 season but Katie not coming in until 2020. Robyn going JC or she can find a player who can both set and hit OPP?

Both Annie Mitchem and Adora Anae are on the Pan Am Cup Training Team.

    8. thanks. new thread up with that.

and thanks for the help on how UH announces signees.
They only do so for scholarship players. Sometimes we learn about the invited walk-ons and can add them to a story.
