Only way to go is up.

  2. Old Rainbow July 24, 2018 5:27 am

Is that a new helmet design?

  3. Jeremy July 24, 2018 5:39 am

Wait…that’s not the green matte helmet. Is UH reverting back to the metallic green?

  4. H-Man July 24, 2018 5:41 am

    Is that our new helmet?

  5. 808SEC July 24, 2018 6:42 am

If the latest media guide is any indication, it looks like the blacks may be back – https://hawaiiathletics.com/sports/2018/7/17/2018-rainbow-warrior-football-media-guide.aspx

  6. islandman July 24, 2018 7:01 am

The preseason poll prediction is the same as the final standings for 2017, except for Air Force and Utah St changing places. No creativity.

  7. Old Rainbow July 24, 2018 7:06 am

I don’t recall a fundraiser for the new black helmets.

  8. Stephen Tsai July 24, 2018 7:11 am

It’s last year’s helmets, painted black

  9. Old Rainbow July 24, 2018 7:23 am

I prefer the metallic dark green helmets that were used in June’s era, the ones that replaced the black ones used in June’s first year. But I prefer the black over the flat green ones used last year. Probably my least favorite of all UH helmets.

Glad they painted over last year’s helmet, as it saves money versus purchasing new ones. Too bad they didn’t just go with the black instead of the flat green last year.

Oh well, at least the change was made. I’m guessing the metallic green is too expensive? Or is it a registered trademark owned by a company we no longer purchase helmets from? I thought that UH’s metallic green, and San Diego State’s old metallic red helmets, were the nicest in the MWC/WAC.

  10. haka July 24, 2018 7:24 am

The old black uniforms and the dark green metallic helmets were the bomb and can’t be beat, but at least black is back! Good for marketing, good for the fans and good for the mental empowerment of the players. Look good, feel good and hopefully, play good!

Fifth? No can be fifth and win da national championship! How you figgah? Hehehe. Just gotta prove’em wrong and make a statement. Fresno did it so why can’t we? Everyone needs to buy into if literally and figuratively. I’m in!

Tavai has the ability to be the defensive player of the year and if he does, it will probably translate into the team having a good year. Let’s hope that is the case. Go Warriors!

  11. Akamai Okole July 24, 2018 7:39 am

    Great Morning All!

    One of #2 son’s teammate’s had a terrific observation.

“I love wearing all purple and hearing the other team’s reaction when they pull themselves off the turf as they tell each other they just got pancake’d by a Smurf.” 😆

This year they are playing for their 63rd consecutive winning season.

Wear any kine color…jus play yer a$$ off!

  12. Inyoface July 24, 2018 8:43 am

Fresno St. was picked to be dead last this time last year.

  13. H-Man July 24, 2018 8:58 am

Many new players to fill gaps; many new coaches; new offense; new quarterback ; coming off 3-9 season. 5th understandable. At least not 6th. Main thing they’re competitive and entertaining. Of course a winning season would be tops.

  14. 808WarriorFan July 24, 2018 9:17 am

    #14 … “H-Man” … AGREE … bummer news
… Malachi Mageo not listed on the Roster … is he Medically retired … ????? Bro was AWESOME …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

  15. H-Man July 24, 2018 9:46 am

808, you must have missed it. Malachi, #38, is listed. He looks a lot bigger in his pic. but still may not be the starter in the beginning with maybe Pritchard ahead of him. One year off and need time to shake off the rust. Looks like Mel Davis got his 6th year.

  16. 808WarriorFan July 24, 2018 9:55 am

#16 … “H-Man … In the 2018 Media Guide he’s listed in the “Letterman Lost” Section … Media Guide showing Keliam Brunn as #38 … sure hope Mel Davis is healthy, in shape, & gets that 6th year …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

  17. 808WarriorFan July 24, 2018 10:01 am

Mr Tsai … can you confirm the status of LB Malachi Mageo & RB Mel Davis … Mageo is showing in The Media Guide “Letterman Lost” Section but shows up in the Athletics Dept Fooball Website Roster

    Mahalo …

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

  18. Bulla July 24, 2018 10:32 am

Media Guide listing Keliam Brunn as #38 but not BIO, was that because he was a late add-on to the roster?

  19. Anthony Catekista July 24, 2018 10:45 am

Rainbow Warrior Pride..Better to start on lower side, let then overlook the Warriors..But they better not expect pushovers, BYU did that several times in crucial national standing games..

  20. Inyoface July 24, 2018 10:54 am

    #20 Probably

  21. Maddog50 July 24, 2018 11:12 am

New everything! Here is an observation-Tavai and Taala along with vets will strengthen the middle D-outside pressure will return heavy and overall LB crew 1’s and 2’s will a best core in conference. As far as OL is concerned with zone blocking you don’t need prototypical guys, you need wall off guys and tie up guys-I think we will have enough of them. Once camp. starts I will have a much better idea but with zone blocking it’s simpler than scheme/combo blocking. The more I see and the less said, I think we are gonna sneak out of the alley and surprise a bunch of people. This team is gonna be physical and relentless. That’s is this guys opinion!

  22. al July 24, 2018 11:13 am

Just curious to know what the status of the late recruits are?
    Scholarship?
    Preferred walk on?
    Walk on?

    Thank you in advance

If Malachi Mageo and Melvin Davis are medically cleared to play, they’ll play.
    If they’re not, they won’t.

    Meet the couch potato
    Thanks for stopping by.
This might not look like much now, but once this place is fixed up, we hope it serves as a
meeting place to discuss all things that are University of Hawai’i sports.
There will be updates, behind-the-scenes stories of UH figures and the people who cover them
and guest contributors. If I can figure out the equipment — and that’s an “if,” considering my
    VCR still blinks “12:00 … 12:00 …: — we’ll post sound bites and videos.
This will be your blog, too, so please send suggestions, questions and gripes. I’ll try to find the
answers. I might be a couch potato, but I’ve got a press pass, a fat Rolodex and a thick skin
    (mostly around the mid-section).
    See you in a bit.

How long has Melvin been injured? Seems like 3 years by now.

  35. warriorsanddolphins July 24, 2018 3:22 pm

I looked at the Hawaii fall roster and didnt see Michael Washington’s name. He is a slotback from Monrovia California that supposedly has the same build and speed as a previous player with the same name that played for June Jones.

    Thanks SteveM.

  39. suckkabooya July 24, 2018 3:51 pm

Different shapes, different sizes, an assortment of skill-sets. So many options on offense and defense. Should be a lot to have to prepare for. Diversity. Awesome.

  40. DaveLetterMan July 24, 2018 3:52 pm

    Michael Washington
His Twitter page says UH class of ’22
He seems excited about the new unis.

  41. wafan July 24, 2018 4:32 pm

    Huzzah!

Happy 12th birthday to the WB and resultant Tsai-kos!!!

  42. suckkabooya July 24, 2018 4:51 pm

The scout teams should be unreal too. Could probably mimic the triple option real good with all the different types of running backs. RPO, pro style, run and shoot, anything.. Should go into each game well prepared this season. So good now.

  44. suckkabooya July 24, 2018 6:55 pm

I hope we don’t give up on the tight end position in this new offense. I always thought coach Jones (coach Mac too) could have used an “H back” type sized receiver in certain sets. I was hoping La’ulu would be that type to add to that personnel group but he is listed as DL. Torres is a senior this year. Something we could pitch to a recruit looking to get NFL exposure. H back able to make plays in and out of space, tightly lined or spread out. I hope we can consider it.

  45. Tom-warriornation July 24, 2018 8:59 pm

Who needs tickets to our road game at Army, I got a group of 55 fans going. Text me at 415-324-0585. Also SJSU, Fresno or SDSU?

  46. burro sabio July 24, 2018 10:33 pm

So ST doesn’t have to explain this for the umpteenth time, fall camp is limited to 105 and the roster can be expanded on the first day of school. There are currently 103 on the roster.

Absence from the roster doesn’t mean a player is gone or is not coming. We now return you to your regular programming.

  47. ai-eee-soos July 25, 2018 12:37 am

    GO WARRIORS !!!

  48. suckkabooya July 25, 2018 1:19 am

The rotation of the defensive line’s interior should be interesting. Got some power, some quickness, and some girth. Very young yet so there is some cause for concern but this group in my opinion will be much more physical and aggressive than the finesse style group that was last year’s interior. Seven or eight deep (for the two or three spots) with a wide variety of different methods that each lineman has so to possibly wear down the opponent. Coach Logo will have them ready. Teriffic

  49. suckkabooya July 25, 2018 1:38 am

BTW if the defensive line can control the line of scrimmage much better last year’s group and they can keep Jahlani freed up and able to make plays then Jahlani Tavai may evoke some Junior Seau abilities. I think he really does have that kind of skill set. Let’s go Warriors!

  50. suckkabooya July 25, 2018 1:46 am

BTW again (sorry) Happy Birthday to the Warrior Beat and the Tsai-ko’s. 12 years old. Hitting puberty. Gotta use deodorant now.

  51. suckkabooya July 25, 2018 2:42 am

Jordan Skye was no “H-back”. Neither was Justin Clapp, Antwan Mahaley or Regan Mauia. Maybe Tui Unga could have been. Dakota Torres might be, now that he is lighter. But Clark Evans was and I think that Jonah La’ulu is. My opinion. I think we need at least one on the roster. Sorry I had too much coffee tonight.

  52. Maddog50 July 25, 2018 5:58 am

Coaches Batoon Banker and Logo should be excited and feel good about the material they have to work with now. Putting together a solid unit should come rather rapidly barring any major injuries or series of injuries. Particularly excited to watch impact and development of Ta ala, Tavai in the interior. Also the develop of the pressure or “rush” ends. Very optimistic regarding the development in impact of this group. The Lb core will also be extremely active and exciting. The guy who has a very interesting task is Mark Weber the OL coach. He now has 16-18 prospects to work with when all said and done. I can see Hensley Levao and Vanterpool dead square in the mix. Newcomers are in the mix and some of the younger guys really coming along. Believe it or not I think this group over time will develop into a capable competent group. Regardless of the preseason pick, which is well deserved based on all factors, the situation lends itself to the chemistry of new players new coaches and fresh start. I think the experience and knowledge of the new staff is extremely important and a huge upgrade from the past with coaches and players out to prove something-if you ain’t excited, take a step back change your view and take a strong look from another angle. You may be surprised at what you see! GoWarriors!!!!

  53. islandman July 25, 2018 6:13 am

Mainland fans can watch UH football home games for free on their cell phones and tablets this season. But only on those devices and not on your computer.
” Last year, the Mountain West pulled the plug on free streaming because viewers in Hawaii were able to circumvent Spectrum’s pay-per-view barriers and receive the free transmission intended for mainland fans. ” (staradvertiser, July 25)

When you view the games through your cellphone and tablet, will that be via the internet or ? The story said streaming no longer available on the internet, i think.
