Warriors arrive

The Warriors arrived in New York this morning, where they visited the National September 11 Memorial.

Coach Nick Rolovich brought a lei in memory of a friend, according to a UH official.

The Warriors then stopped for pizza — yes, this is the city that never sleeps nor stops eating — on the walk back to the buses. They are expected to arrive in Springfield, Mass., this afternoon, check into the hotel, and then have a walk-through session.

The SA has a UH Warrior football insert in today’s paper. It covers all the positions’ depth chart, and features write-ups on key players.

  6. oldie August 23, 2017 8:09 am

Just to echo H-Man, multi-page insert in today’s SA with numerous articles by Stephen. If you don’t normally get the SA, this might be a good one to pick up.

    Go Warriors!

  7. Da Punchbowl Kid August 23, 2017 8:19 am

Meanwhile, at UMASS the cry goes out: “The Warriors are coming, the Warriors are coming!!!” Time’s running out for the Minutemen!

    GO WARRIORS!!!
    CLOCK THE MINUTEMEN!!!

  8. Maddog50 August 23, 2017 8:21 am

Hopefully they got some rest on that long journey. New York is an amazing city. So now on to the game. I see it as a slightly uphill battle but a win. UMass is hungry and at home, we to have an appetite but have traveled a long way so it may take a quarter or so to get on track-I think turnovers as being a key along with the kicking game-GoWarriors!!!

  9. TChahng August 23, 2017 8:39 am

49 – 34. We will block one PAT.

  10. Stephen Tsai August 23, 2017 8:51 am

    H-Man
For some reason, the insert wasn’t posted on line.

  11. H-Man August 23, 2017 9:41 am

ST, the SA provides print copies to digital subscribers with their subscription, so I suppose it does not matter.. Regarding the game, I count on the Minutemen to score at least 4 TDs. Ad to limit them to 28 points, It will be up to the Warriors’ defense to manage the Minutemen’s running game. Conversely, Warriors have to execute their running game. I think they will. People are talking about UMass’ huge O-line – they are and are effective, especially in short yardage. But our O-line is good too and will create enough space for our runners. I say we have the horses to win.

  12. azwarrior22 August 23, 2017 9:47 am

Looked at the NCAA schedule for opening week and there are 5 games listed. All of them look to have Hawaii exemption, except for Stanford vs Rice, so how is it that Stanford gets to play a week earlier?

Really glad that Mainlanders can watch on the MWC App

    Go Warriors !!!

  13. hilorain August 23, 2017 10:25 am

    Game Week …

Love it that we’re playing these games, gotta travel anywhere to get us exposure.

Den, we have to get the win too!!!

    Hawai’i 44
    UMass 27

    Go Big Green 🌈

  15. Derek August 23, 2017 10:48 am

ST, thanks for the SA insert. Would have liked to know who the entire travel roster was, but can’t get everything I suppose. This first game is tough to pick. Forget last year, this is whole new situation, the first game as opposed to the last game. In a nutshell, both teams can score some points and both gives up a lot of points too. UMass is at home so that’s in their favor. Rolo seems to feel the team has practiced well on both sides of the ball, and have shown maturity and a business like mentality. The kicking game is a question. Key players return on both teams and both have new defensive coordinators. The difference could be turnovers, the kicking game, or a couple of big plays.

Either way, I do think it will be a high scoring affair and which defense plays better. Under Rolo, UH has won a couple of road games, at Air Force and Fresno St. and both were tight games. UMass is not a Pac 12 type game, but they played well against Florida, Miss. St., and South Carolina last year and was able to score some points. I don’t like to have a lot of stress, but I just think this game is going down to the wire again, probably on a kick. The advantage is with the home team, but I am a Hawaii fan, so I will pick our team 41-40 on a field goal by either Meskell or Trifonofitch. Let’s pray!!!!!

  16. Haleakala August 23, 2017 10:52 am

I have a digital subscription without subscribing to the print edition. I would like to see the football insert. ST, I hope it gets included in the online SA soon.

  17. Duster August 23, 2017 11:38 am

I went to the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield last year. One thing that struck me was Michael Jordan’s footprint. He has small feet for a 6’6″ guy. Now Shaq’s footprint was ginormous. There is also a Hawaii tie to the founding of b-ball that I did not know about.

As for UMass, the students aren’t in school yet, so attendance at the game may not be up to snuff. A loud UH contingent in the stands could give the Warriors an added jolt.

  18. islandman August 23, 2017 12:23 pm

New holder and placekickers this season, might affect the team results.

  19. Maddog50 August 23, 2017 12:26 pm

This blog is heating up. Latest on UMass a starting LB and team leader has retired due to knee. One of the two Qbs is questionable so I think it’s Ford we’ll be seeing

Be calm be at peace. Not to worry my almanac for 2017 shows Hawaii winning 48 to 21. I just watched “Back to the Future”. I’m not a robot.

  26. Kazu August 23, 2017 3:52 pm

Not a dye hard fan but just for the heck of it i’ll go 27-24 UH.

  27. 808WarriorFan August 23, 2017 4:23 pm

I’ve been through UH Warrior Football withdrawals since the end of The Hawaii Bowl … however I am being cautiously optimistic vs UMass … if I read correctly they return quite a bit of lettermen / starters so it’ll be a game of who has improved the most since December … it’s going to take a collective effort from everyone returning last year to put another successful campaign together now that they know what it takes to win and hopefully the UNLV & New Mexico games taught them what will happen if they get ahead of themselves & get “big headed” … everyone in The MWC now knows we are for real and won’t take us lightly.

LIVE ALOHA / PLAY WARRIOR / DEFEND THE ROCK … GO ‘BOWS … !!!!!

  28. bg August 23, 2017 5:18 pm

Couldn’t help but be extremely impressed by ST’s writing in this morning’s insert!!! Just a genius with the pun and analogy and the way he weaves a unifying theme through the article. Just catches your attention and pulls you along like a malasada on a string tied to a stick. Makes the player pop out from the background and slides in tidbits of information that demonstrate the wonderful character and energy of the team. 5 STARS….

We are fortunate beyond belief, to have Stephen writing for us. Go and read other teams’ newspapers and you’ll quickly see what I mean.

Excellent job! Stephen really enjoyed pull out section now online-I have a hard copy being sent from a friend. So now we are dogs by 2 this week. Actually going to go out and watch the game at a local establishment for the first time in a few years-one last thing-a certain sportswriter not Stephen has his predictions. Once again he will be way off, particularly the UNLV prediction. “Book that Dano”

It’s the 1936 Olympics and UMass is the first hurdle.

    30. I don’t think the football game is on OC16 ( channel 12), but the volleyball games will be on that channel.
