Kanalu Young scholarship established

By Stephen Tsai on October 10, 2008

The June Jones Foundation has established an annual scholarship in which $2,500 will be awarded to a deserving UH student majoring in Hawaiian Studies. The Dr. Kanalu Young Hawaiian Studies Scholarship is named after the inspiration for the Eo Na Toa chant used by the Warriors last season. Kanalu recently passed away. * * * Whoops. I erred. The Rainbow Dancers’ posters, not calendars, will debut tomorrow. The Rainbow Dancers will be available to sign the posters between 4:30 p.m. […]

Kailua's Winchester-Makainai commits to UH; Maka cleared

By Stephen Tsai on October 9, 2008

Chauncy Winchester-Makainai, an offensive lineman from Kailua High School, today gave a verbal promise to UH. “I committed,” said Winchester-Makainai, who is 6 feet 4 and 315 pounds. He has played every position on the offensive line. According to Kailua line coach Hauoli Wong, Makainai’s “strength is at guard.” Winchester-Makainai received interest from Boise State, Colorado, Idaho, Michigan State, Utah and Washington. But, he said, “I’m from Hawai‘i, I want to play for my state. … I’ve wanted to play […]

We're giving away 2 tickets; Galdeira returns

By Stephen Tsai on October 8, 2008

Want two tickets (Makai Orange section P, row 29) to Saturday’s UH-Louisiana Tech football game? If you’re post No. 350, they are all yours. Thanks to our editor, Mark Platte, for donating the tickets. * * * One of the Warriors’ top special-team players in recent years, Guyton Galdeira, today rejoined the UH football team. “I’m just happy to be on the team again,” Galdeira said. Galdeira left the team in the spring after signing a contract to perform as […]

Pilares is moving, Billy Ray Stutzmann is not

By Stephen Tsai on October 7, 2008

Kealoha Pilares practiced at slotback today. * * * Billy Ray Stutzmann disputed an Internet report that claimed he was reneging on his commitment to UH. “That’s false,” he said, adding he will sign with the Warriors. * * * Antwan “Tua” Mahaley was kidding, I think, when he suggested he would try out for the men’s volleyball team. But maybe that isn’t so far-fetched. At 6 feet 4, with a long reach and a 33-inch vertical jump, Mahaley would […]

Monteilh, Iceman honored; Funaki is No. 1

By Stephen Tsai on October 6, 2008

Free safety Keao Monteilh and kicker Dan “Iceman” Kelly have been named winners of WAC Player of the Week awards. Monteilh is the top defender after intercepting two passes in a 32-29 upset of Fresno State. Kelly kicked another game-winner in overtime. * * * Head coach Greg McMackin announced today that Inoke Funaki will remain as his No. 1 quarterback. “There is no quarterback controversy,” McMackin said. Well, there might be at No. 2, which is now open to […]

The day after

By Stephen Tsai on October 5, 2008

Does the 48–hour rule apply to victories? * * * The Warriors aren’t saying anything publicly, but they were clearly irked about the final penalty count. While the game might have been called fairly, it wasn’t balanced: UH had 10 penalties, Fresno State had zip. Ryan Mouton said he should not have been called for pass interference. Of the karma that became a UH victory, Mouton noted: “God works in mysterious ways. He made up for it.” It also appeared […]

UH beats FS in overtime

By Stephen Tsai on October 4, 2008

FRESNO —It was craziness on the field and then in the UH locker room after Dan “The Iceman” Kelly delivered the winning field goal tonight.  And, for those who were confused, it was Antwan “Tua” Mahaley who blocked the field-goal attempt in the final minute, not Elliott Purcell. * * * It’s game day in the Land of the Raisin Sun. The team is scheduled for breakfast, meetings, pre-game meal, chapel and then off to the Bulldog Stadium. * * […]

Cheers to the visitors

By Stephen Tsai on October 3, 2008

During the walk-through practice in Florida for the season opener, Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw asked: Where are the UH cheerleaders? Somebody listened. The cheerleaders will be making the trip to Fresno. * * * “Into the lion’s den,” offensive coordinator Ron Lee said of today’s walk-through in Fresno’s Bulldog Stadium. The Warriors have not practiced on the Fresno campus since 2000, when they had a workout on a field in front of a row of fraternity houses. Let’s see, frat […]
