Cheers to the visitors

During the walk-through practice in Florida for the season opener, Manoa chancellor Virginia Hinshaw asked: Where are the UH cheerleaders?
Somebody listened.
The cheerleaders will be making the trip to Fresno.

* * *

“Into the lion’s den,” offensive coordinator Ron Lee said of today’s walk-through in Fresno’s Bulldog Stadium.
The Warriors have not practiced on the Fresno campus since 2000, when they had a workout on a field in front of a row of fraternity houses. Let’s see, frat guys … Friday afternoon … well, it wasn’t a a pretty sight.
Coincidence or not, after that June Jones’ UH teams practiced at high school fields, community centers and, even, pro practice facilities before road games. They have never had a walk-through on Boise’s blue turf.
But that is changing under Greg McMackin, who believes the Warriors need to practice where they play — at least on the road. (Not sure why they don’t have walk-throughs at Aloha Stadium.)
In two weeks, they will have a walk-through on Boise’s field.

* * *

During the vonAppen era, “Ferd” and I decided to go on the Bulldog Stadium field before the pre-game warmups.
“You guys suck!” the fans yelled at us.
Wow we thought, fans here are tough. I mean, they were booing the visiting scribes.
We turned around.
It was the wives of the UH coaches jeering us.

My wife is a kind soul who volunteers with the foster program, helps our son’s high school and lets me take credit for catching the three mice she recently caught in our house. (“I think I did everything but jump on a chair and yell, “Eek.”) But the one thing that strains her politeness is when I ask: “Have you seen my belt?” To which she always responds, with a smirk: “Why do you need a belt?” Which is why I didn’t tell her that I forgot to pack a belt for this trip. I bought one in the San Francisco airport, although Robert Kekaula and Bobby Curran said, nearly in unison: “Why does it take you so long to buy a belt?” Do you think folks are trying to tell me I need better waist management?

It’s quiet out here in Seoul on a Friday night. I think today was a Korean holiday. “Foundation Day” I think it’s called.

When auntie Virgie speaks, people listen. I’m happy for the cheerleaders that they get to make this trip to Fresno.

the natives have been restless in waikiki, also with the ship in port at pearl harbor, a lot of ‘activities’ going on at our respective hotels, oh well.

i don’t know what the weather forecast is for UH game, but it is not going to be nice for Weber State. 57 degrees and thundershowers, with it dropping to 44 degrees at night. it is a day game, so we’ll be getting drenched in the 57 degree warmth. can someone say, borrow BG’s flask for me? brrrrrrrrrrrrr

today is good daddy/favorite uncle day; going to the apartment to cook chili and rice with caesars salad. Hoke, Kaimakaua, Umbebayashi and Eastman will be very happy tonight and this weekend….good thing they have a big rice cooker already. i heard they might be selling chili plate lunches to the other local boyz, haha

all for now, hope you’re all getting your beauty rest….off to feed the beast some bfast in a few…..

    a hui hou

  8. wafan October 3, 2008 4:05 am

One more day. I sure hope the ASPCA is not around Fresno tomorrow when the Warriors kick the dogs. Would not want any unnecessary citations.

Good morning and a happy Aloha Friday to everyone!!!

No kids today (yay!) just meetings all day (booooo!).

  9. wafan October 3, 2008 4:08 am

    Hi Bulla and Boss!

I hope the Beast and friends have a great game today. Play nice and fair while going for the jugular.

  10. Bulla October 3, 2008 4:14 am

    aloha wafan,

whew, game is tomorrow, today is walk through and study hall. mahalo for the kind words, i will let the beast know.

the weather is going to be ugly, 57 degrees and thundershowers predicted for the 1 pm game…..ouch. ponchos are packed and ready for us.

a win would be spectacular, time to knock Montana off of their perch….we’ll see. have a good day, drink your coffee so you can stay awake 🙂

aloha to pride and my other XL brothers,

did some damage in reno when i went clothes shopping. found a great store and you should check it out at http://www.casualmale.com they have a lot of great clothes and the selection is really good.

i was trying to convince the store manager to open one in honolulu, shoot, i wanted to talk about franchising the operation….but he was not a decision maker…alas.

the clothes are great quality, name brands, and a very good selection. long story short, i am sending a box via UPS home, between lyn and i, we tried to save the Reno economy by ourselves, haha.

just a heads up for my fashionable XL brothers

  13. Kekoa (iPhone) October 3, 2008 4:35 am

The clothes make the man! You are such a trend setter, a real fashion plate! I will follow your lead and dump *Omar* the tent maker!

  14. Bulla October 3, 2008 4:53 am

    haha,

Omar the tent man, yeah, didn’t have too many colors in his selection, mostly white in his racks, haha.

just a heads up for all the big boys, because i gotta admit, Big and Tall does not tickle my pickle at all.

The Beast will be unleashed, ‘Cats need the win to keep their season going, and looking for a great battle in 57 degree thundershowers…..can anyone sing, ‘Purple rain, purple rain….’ now that was a good movie.

have a great day my brother…..

  15. mctruck October 3, 2008 4:54 am

Which reminds me of me trying to find (XXXL)t-shirts for my yard maintenance man recently. Not an easy task in my town.

I am an XL myself, so yes, I’m with you Mr. XL-Bulla.

  16. Garret October 3, 2008 5:00 am

It is great that the cheerleaders will be making the trip! I hope that they are treated well by the Fresno crowd…

  17. mctruck October 3, 2008 5:01 am

And I’m with the coaches wives…..boooooo to all you media guys!!! you don’t know anything!!!!…nah!nah!!…just joking, ST. I am smiling from ear-to-ear over your entry above.

  18. Bulla October 3, 2008 5:01 am

    aloha mctruck,

with all of our XL population in hawaii, i thought this store would be a natural….some of my friends are XL at birth, and they don’t get smaller. not every male is a Madison Avenue model, or a Sunny Garcia photo icon…..hate to depress you DPK, but that is the truth.

just thought i would pass the info along to everyone. gives everyone a chance to get some new threads before the Tsaiko Christmas party, haha.

  19. Garret October 3, 2008 5:04 am

If I remember correctly, Chancellor Hinshaw was at UC-Davis before she came to UH. UC-Davis does not have a D-IA team, so her big intro to Warrior road trips was the Sugar Bowl, which is quite different than a normal road trip. I do not think that the cheerleaders normally make trips because of the expense, but if that money can be found (and NOT charged to the financially-strapped athletic department!) then that will be nice for the team.

  20. Garret October 3, 2008 5:05 am

    mctruck,

I agree with you about ST’s entry–funny story about the Fresno booing!

  21. Garret October 3, 2008 5:09 am

    KHNL story on the Warriors.

“As bad as we played on offense, we played hard, but as bad as we played we still got close to 400 yards, we have to execute, take what teams give us and I’ll think we’ll be okay,” said Ron Lee, Warriors offensive coordinator.

Despite Hawaii’s latest loss, the team is still confident in their potential.

“We just have to go out there and play smart, like Coach Ron was telling us, if we play smart we would’ve beat this team by a lot, San Jose State,” said Kealoha Pilares, Warriors wide receiver.

  22. Bulla October 3, 2008 5:09 am

    Garret,

could be like throwing meat to the lions by having the cheerleaders go to the dog pound….whew, maybe they’ll take their earplugs with them.

that place is notorious and well documented as one of the most brutal, fan friendly, opponent threatening stadiums…..

Warriors just need to play solid Warrior football and quiet the crowd.

    IMUA WARRIORS

  23. Garret October 3, 2008 5:09 am

The Warriors won’t dwell on the negatives, instead they’re looking to stay positive.

“This is a fun time to be on this team, because the only place we can go is up from here.”

  24. Garret October 3, 2008 5:13 am

    Bulla,

I agree about the Fresno crowd and how brutal they can be!

I’m sure that their fans and players will be trying to do all they can to get the Warriors upset, especially after UH had so many personal fouls against SJSU. The Warriors will have to remain focused, get an early lead, and discourage the crowd by playing solid football.

  25. Garret October 3, 2008 5:15 am

    KITV notes about the game.

Except for surrendering a 77-yard touchdown pass early in the first half, the Hawaii defense actually played rather well against the Spartans. In fact, the Warriors ended up stopping SJSU on two crucial drives in the fourth quarter, forcing the visitors to attempt lengthy field goals of 50 and 47 yards, which ended up giving the Spartans the win. Adam Leonard led the way with a game- high nine tackles, two of which came behind the line of scrimmage.

“We’ve had our troubles with Hawaii,” head coach Pat Hill noted in his weekly press conference. “Defensively, they are one heck of a football team. I think this football team defensively is as good as I’ve seen at Hawaii.”

  26. Garret October 3, 2008 5:16 am

Visalia Delta-Times has an article about the game.

“They lost four all-conference receivers and an all-conference quarterback,” Fresno State coach Pat Hill said. “So they’re still trying to find themselves on offense, like a lot of us do when we have new players.”

In fact, this game could be so ugly that Hill might draft a letter at halftime, thanking Jones, who left Hawaii for SMU.

On top of potential vulnerabilities, the Warriors own a lot of the intangibles Fresno State seems to be lacking.

“They still have a very experienced offensive line and I think their defense and special teams are very solid,” Hill said.

It might be a good time to mention most of Austin’s yardage came in special teams situations, and Fresno State is missing two starters from the offensive line.

  27. Garret October 3, 2008 5:19 am

The Collegian (I think this is Fresno State’s student paper) has an article about the game.

    When Hawaii runs:
    Advantage – Hawaii
Hawaii does not have a strong running attack, but the Bulldogs are missing a few players on the defensive line and a running quarterback can give the Bulldogs trouble.

    When Hawaii passes:
    Advantage – Fresno State
In years past, this has been a strength for Hawaii, but 2008 has been different. Hawaii quarterbacks have thrown four touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

    Special teams:
    Advantage – Hawaii
After last week’s performance, the Bulldogs still have a lot to prove.

  28. Garret October 3, 2008 5:20 am

The Fresno Bee of course has a story on the Warriors.

“I wouldn’t call it sad times, but definitely tough,” said Warriors quarterback Inoke Funaki, who will start for Hawaii when it plays Fresno State at 7 p.m. Saturday at Bulldog Stadium.

“We’re running the same plays, same schemes, but the results are different,” Funaki added. “It’s been trying these past couple of weeks.

“You look back at what we did last year, and to be struggling now. It’s just tough. Everyone is just trying to hang in there.”

“The Sugar Bowl was a successful game for us in every way but the scoreboard,” said Gregg Takayama, communications director of the Hawaii-Manoa campus. “It was tremendous what that run did for the campus and the amount of pride there was from the whole community.

  29. Garret October 3, 2008 5:23 am

Washington Post has a quote from Colt.

As he stands on the sidelines before games, Jim Zorn performs a sort of football gymnastics, dribbling balls off the turf and slinkying them up and down his arms and spinning them on his finger. Add in some spandex, corrupt judges and a Tchaikovsky soundtrack, and you might as well call it an Olympic sport. A colleague jokingly called these “Stupid Coach Tricks,” and yesterday I finally asked Zorn about his skills.

“I call them Worthless Tricks,” he said. “There’s a lot of quarterbacks that can do it; I don’t know if anybody can do [quite] as much.”

“It’s like all this old-school Harlem Globetrotters type stuff they used to do back in the old days probably,” Colt Brennan joked. “We as young kids, we really don’t know how to do it like he does, because we’ve got too much rhythm.”

“He’s always trying to show off, he’s always trying to show he still has it,” Brennan said. “And he does. To give him credit, he kind of does.”

  30. Loa October 3, 2008 5:23 am

    morning gang!

Garret – #28, now kinda make sense that Inoke gets the start

  31. chawan_cut October 3, 2008 5:23 am

hopefully there’s a large contingent of UH fans in Fresno tomorrow. When I went 2 years ago, there was. and hopefully they allow the UH cheerleaders to stand in front of our fans. we sat near the band and they weren’t very entertaining. they were angry though.

and so if THE Princess will be on the field playing in the Alumni game, who will do the game write up? or will she be taking mental notes as she scores or passes the ball to Kai to score? i wonder if there’s ever been a story done like this by one of the players themselves.

  32. Garret October 3, 2008 5:23 am

Sorry, but that was all I found via Google this morning.

  33. King Katonk October 3, 2008 5:27 am

    ST,
Don’t worry about those hostile Fresno fans, they’re just jealous of Hawai’i. I would be bitter too if I lived in a crime-ridden, polluted, economically depressed, over taxed city in decline. (What a second, it sounds like where I live in L.A.)

Anyway, the Warriors will beat those Raisin Heads into Prune Juice!

  34. Kekoa (iPhone) October 3, 2008 5:30 am

Like I said. Score quickly, score at every opportunity and those so-called Fans disappear. It happened in 2006, we can make it happen in 2008!

  35. Loa October 3, 2008 5:35 am

King Katonk – lmffao, almost spit out my oatmeal, hehe

  36. chawan_cut October 3, 2008 5:36 am

for those of you going to the Fresno game, the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce of Northern California is having their traditional tailgate before the game. I went 2 years ago, and it was pretty big. There was food and all you can drink beer for $10.
here’s their website for more info:

    flyer here:

  39. Loa October 3, 2008 5:40 am

chawan_cut – what? all you can drink beer? when is the next flight, wonder if Koakane heard about this tg

  40. Kekoa (iPhone) October 3, 2008 5:42 am

LOA ~ What about Murphey’s? Can?

  41. KonaGirl October 3, 2008 5:44 am

Strategically placed, the Hawaii fans will be in the last two “P” sections of the stadium which is directly behind the FSU band…not good for the cheerleaders at all. This means the cheerleaders, when facing the UH fans, will be cheering directly at the FSU band and typically, the band will be rude and play every time our cheers begin. While I think it’s a great, the cheerleaders should travel to EVERY away game, they are going to have to develop some thick skin in a hurry for this one!

    GO WARRIORS!!!!

Oh, and remember, cheer as loud as you can when we are on DEFENSE!!!!

  42. chawan_cut October 3, 2008 5:47 am

oh, here’s pictures from the last time we were in fresno.
of the tailgate, the town and the game. WARNING! I take WAY too many photos.

  44. Loa October 3, 2008 5:56 am

Garret – if you still out there, have a nice cruise, i hope they no run out of food 😆

  45. King Katonk October 3, 2008 6:05 am

    Kekoa,
I would love to hit up the 99 to the “armpit” but my son has a football game tomorrow. He’s not the best player and he gets knocked around pretty good. But he still gets up after every play and doesn’t quit. I am very proud of his sportsmanship and his character; just like the Warriors.

Besides my doctor said I should refrain from breathing too much pesticides.

  46. LizKauai [iMac] BELIEVER October 3, 2008 6:13 am

    Aloha Kakahiaka!

    Way to start the day!
bulla- now I feel better about my visit to the Dress Barn in Portland. I haven’t gotten new work clothes for a few years 😆

uh oh- what’s my cat playing with (it’s still dark in here)… dead mouse!
    Good job, cats!!!

  47. bighilofan2 October 3, 2008 6:28 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere!

    Thanks Garrett for the news.

    Got lotsa work.

    Esme Woooooooosssssssshhhh

    Go Warriors!

  48. d1島: October 3, 2008 6:30 am

    Great Morning All!

Good news for the cheerleaders. Should be a character-building event for that group as they face a pretty hostile crowd.
Oh well, just keep in mind, when the game is over you get to pack up and come back to Hawaii…they get to go back and clean-up after a herd of cows! Now that’s bulls**t!

  49. d1島: October 3, 2008 6:32 am

    It’s Aloha Friday….do doo be doo….

Have a great day erryboddy! 😀

  50. chawan_cut October 3, 2008 6:46 am

I’m glad the Chancellor spoke up and said that. She’s been at other universities and knows what real college sports environment are like. Instead of saying “we’re just Hawaii, and we can’t have stuff like that” she said, “WHY NOT? What can we do to make it happen???” I like it. I think she and JD will make significant changes in the years to come.
Out of the dark ages we go.

  51. djmitcho October 3, 2008 6:48 am

Good Morning and Happy Aloha Friday Tsaikoland. I hope everyone traveling to the game has good and safe travels.

    Bulla,
As a XL guy myself, I am lucky I guess cause we have a casual male store here in Spokane. I usually don’t shop there unless I have to though.
That means if I need a dress shirt to fit my fat neck, thats where I go.

  52. Kekoa (iPhone) October 3, 2008 7:02 am

    Aloha Friday!

Warriors win, come back to island home. Fresno loses…where is there for them to go? That’s a horrible thought!

  53. haka October 3, 2008 7:05 am

Glad the cheerleaders will be there!

If you think the Dawg Pound will be rough on the Warriors, imagine what kind of reaction they will get from the Hawaii…..uh….hmmm…faithful, if they don’t play well.

Ahhhh, but doggonnit, it ain’t gonna happen. Every dog has it’s day, but it won’t be at the expense of the Warriors! The play book will be dog eared and wrinkly and the Warrior offense will show their bite. I’m not barking up the wrong tree either! It will be a dog fight, but Fresno’s bark is bigger than their bite and the Warrior mentality must be to be the badder junkyard dog! No bones to pick here, the Warriors know it will be ruff and they will unleash their mana!

    Have a good day everyone!
    Go Warriors!

  54. Stretch October 3, 2008 7:16 am

    Good Morning Tsaikos!!

It appears that Fresno St is not to hospitable to the visiting teams. I hope the fans don’t taunt us too much, that would be very unsportsmanlike.

  55. Stretch October 3, 2008 7:19 am

I better correct it now before the grammar police does…

    not too hospitable

  56. Rob25 October 3, 2008 7:23 am

    WE’RE HERE!!!!!

Well, we arrived in beautiful Fresno.
“Ferd” has been here since Sunday.
The weather is very nice, in the 60s, although “Ferd” told us it was in the 90s. I guess he was standing on his head at the time.

  64. Stephen Tsai October 3, 2008 7:44 am

The players are still asleep. But I saw Lumpkin and Aranda in the lobby.

The Tsaikos, led by Pomai, pulled together and were able to fund the cost of these bracelets. Let’s continue to support the women and show up for this event.

I will be putting in the order today for 20 tickets at $8 each. We still have some open seats so if anyone wants to join us, send me an email at stretch6592 at yahoo

    mornin tsaikos,

out of curiosity, Graunke hurt his hand right? But the article this morning said Rolovich sees that Graunke doesnt have 100% arm strength. Did Tyler hurt his arm at the last game in addition to his wrist area?

Basketball news for fans of Anthony Carter:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3623836

A reported deal sending Indiana Pacers guard Jamaal Tinsley to the Denver Nuggets for Steven Hunter and Chucky Atkins did not happen, according to a Nuggets team executive.

“It’s erroneous,” Nuggets vice president of basketball operations Mark Warkentien said of the report in Friday’s New York Post. “Did Dewey beat Truman?”

It will be interesting to see if anything like this does happen. As a Pacers fan, I say good riddance to Tinsley, but I don’t want him taking over A.C.’s job …

  71. Pride. October 3, 2008 8:47 am

    Bulla.

Thanks for the heads up on the store for the tall and svelte. Now I have a reason to go to Reno.

Went to a store in San Francisco once and felt out of place. There were about twenty other customers in the store at the time, and I was the only one under 6 feet 7 inches tall. Even the staff were all around 6-8 to 6-11. Didn’t have many of the svelte customers like me.

oh, and you think we have qb issues? listening to the radio here, wash st. cougar coach was quoted as saying, we only have 3 qbs (with the 2 or 3 injuries to the starters). its hard to have a scout/practice team. he said that he’s hoping there’s some kid that’s going to school that just happened to have played in HS. he was also seen at a frat football game to see if there was talent there.

  84. Pride. October 3, 2008 9:31 am

So with this game against Fresno, we should get the receivers to step it up a little bit. Study your plays, watch a lot of film, visualize the yourself running routes against all of the scenarios that you anticipate you will face on Saturday. Be as mentally prepared as you can. Prepare for everything. Mentally prepare, prepare, prepare.

Use your imagination and believe that the four of you are the best four receivers that have ever played for Hawaii. Make yourself believe that, and then play that way. Last year is gone, those guys are gone. Don’t listen to what everyone says about your inexperience. You decide for yourself who and what you want to be. If you want to be inexperienced and play tentatively, then that’s what you will be. If you want to be prepared, and play with confidence and swagger, then that’s what you will do.

Go in with the attitude that you are the kings and Fresno needs to knock you down.

    1 – Expect to win.
2 – Expect to be in a dogfight.
3 – Expect that at sometime during the game, winning will appear to be impossible.
4 – Expect to win the game at the end of the fourth quarter.

Remember, expect to win. Toss that around in your head and meditate on that. What does it mean to expect to win. Don’t hope, or wish. or determine, but expect…to win.

Well, this is unique: The defensive line is meeting in the lobby of the hotel. Apparently whoever booked this hotel did not take into account the number of meeting rooms.
I suppose they could go to the convention center across the street, but, well, this is a rough area …

  100. Garret October 3, 2008 10:34 am

Phil Steele has his forecast for the game:

Pat Hill did a fine job the last two weeks. They were hoping for an undefeated season and after losing to Wisky they did not go into the tank. Hill has surprisingly never won a WAC title outright and that is his new goal and they take their first step towards trying to achieve it with a comfy home win.

    PHIL’S FORECAST: FRESNO ST 34 Hawaii 13

Interesting that ESPN may be setting up a college network to compete against rivals. They will do the big-name schools first, but it will be curious to see which of the local reporters they give big offers to when they expand to cover the Warriors.

ESPN already has sites up for Ohio State, Oklahoma, USC, Florida, South Carolina, and Miami. So, ESPN has been moving pretty quickly with this!

We’re hearing that ESPN has quietly been contacting journalists in regard to a new college sports project that is likely to launch later this fall. According to a source, ESPN will ease into this new venture with big-name schools first (Texas, Florida State, West Virginia, USC, etc) because they have such a large fanbase, and later with smaller schools (South Florida, Wake Forest, etc). The plan, according to a source, is to challenge Rivals for that coveted college demographic, which is extremely passionate and also loved by advertisers.

  105. madeinhawaii October 3, 2008 10:44 am

    Garret,

You would think they could just buy Rivals.

I can see it now… first they create their own “Rival, Rivals-like site” and subsequently “Rivals” popularity and value drops significantly so that Googles takes interest and buys Rivals out and that act alone revitalizes Rivals and puts them back at the top of all searches.

  106. madeinhawaii October 3, 2008 10:44 am

Maybe rivals turn them down? Anyway, ESPN has been putting some serious money behind this effort, so it will be interesting to see how things are in a year.

The comment section in the article I posted mentioned that ESPN also added Auburn.

Why does it take you so long to buy a belt?” Do you think folks are trying to tell me I need better waist management?

maybe.. .or they could have been trying to tell you to stop ‘waisting’ time … OR more likely, wanting to say something like…”No more your size, already…let’s go try someplace else.” — all the while trying to be exeedingly polite about it. No?

My late mother would have said… “It’s a sign… diet or find bigger cows.” Thank goodness cows come in different sizes.

Only the Air Force and Navy have height/weight restrictions for pilot training and submariners.

David Robinson was 6′ 4″ when he entered Annapolis, but grew and could not apply for pilot or submarine duty. In his case, as with the other academies, they will allow a cadet to complete school and they determine how they can be best placed.

    Hi, everybody,

It’s a great day, my local carrier has the game on gameplan and the world is in order. I have high hopes that the light will come on tonight in the Offense Warriors heads, Funaki avoids mistakes and the defense plays ferocious.

Should Funaki faulter again, I hope the coaches don’t wait too long to put Alex in, if he actually is the back up. With our coaches you never know.

With Graunke I think his arm has a little weakened, due to lack of practice time. I hope that after this week he’s able to practice full on. He’s still the most experienced.

I sincerely hope that Funaki will be able to translate practice into the game. I don’t know why, but I have actually a good feeling about this game.

    GO, WARRIORS!!!!

  140. lab rat October 3, 2008 1:16 pm

  141. homey ✔ October 3, 2008 1:22 pm

    Tsaikos, they’re everywhere.

FT – I don’t think Graunke arm is weak by lack of practice time. Either he tweaked it by altering his throwing motion to compensate for his hand/thumb injury or he just can’t grasp the ball effectively to make a strong throw.

    Kazz – one day…

ST – if it makes you feel better, I use a belt too.

  152. al October 3, 2008 1:45 pm

homey….great assessment of graunke’s arm situation. altho, the lack of practice would have some diminishing returns on the arm strength, but, i agree it is more to do with his gripping or lack of proper gripping of the football. the result is his over or under compensation in his throwing mechanics and we know the outcome of it.

it is wise that he rest his wrist, thumb, etc.

but i still say that he should seek proven unconventional treatments that have been successful in orient for decades. i’ll take him to a practioner myself and pay for it.

    whatta you got to lose?

  153. madeinhawaii October 3, 2008 1:46 pm

Oops… my bad …. coulda sworn I read 470… somewhere up there.. more like ALMOST 400 eh? But still… even with 400 we would have won most of the games last season.

  154. al October 3, 2008 1:50 pm

homey….no not a massage. i know you when make nice-nice at lunch today, but, take your mind away from what could be this weekend.

i talking about old fashion kiatsu, never to be confused with shiatsu. the former resets the nerves and aligns the arteries such that blood flows to heal, nerves are back in order, and one more thing, resetting any bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and the like so the bugga stay work again.

sure several minutes of pain akin to childbirth but it works all the time.
    all the time.

short guy, he gets under and lifts his opponent rendering the legs useless.

(RE: Graunke) I like your version, makes sense.

  165. madeinhawaii October 3, 2008 2:12 pm

swan move? Was it a swan or a crane? Methinks Swans have short legs.

  166. homey ✔ October 3, 2008 2:15 pm

FT – Either that or somebody slammed him against the wall in the locker room or he slipped on soap in the shower (they do have soap right) and fell on his wrist or he was trying to win “who can throw the ball the farthest contest” and over extended himself or the sack in the last game made his arm and shoulder go limp.

so, ST, whats the mood of our warriors?
    are they ready?
    are they intense?
are they expecting to kick a**?

  180. homey ✔ October 3, 2008 2:26 pm

Kazz – Too bad Daniel-san never face Zatoichi.

  185. Kazz October 3, 2008 2:31 pm

    Homey,

I haven’t heard much this past week about how the mood of the team is. I did catch Pilares on the news earlier in the week saying how “it’s a good time to be on this team because the only way we can go is up”.

Call it what you like, but if that is a true representation of what the WHOLE team is feeling then we are good to go for tomorrow. As far as intensity goes, it’s in Fresno State so for those that haven’t been living under a rock for the past few years, they will be in for a dog fight.

Fresno State won’t have to do much to try to bait us in committing offensive fouls so cooler heads must prevail. Pat Hill is a respectable man, but no one should expect him to tell his players to “just play the game”. They had to watch us trample them in 06 and run the table last season, so they want this win as bad as we do.

If we control turnovers and personal fouls we can win this game.

  186. SteveM October 3, 2008 2:32 pm

Speaking of which, can anyone recall a JC transfer who became an All-WAc offensive lineman for UH?
I think Donovan was a transfer, but I’m not sure if he was All-WAC.

Here’s a list of All-WAC offensive linemen. I know Forney, Owen, and Donovan were JC transfers. It’s a pretty impressive list! 😛

Jason – thanks for the list. I was barely walking when those guys were winning awards in the late 70’s. That was a loooooooong time ago….

  278. Stretch October 3, 2008 6:38 pm

Congratulations to everyone on that list!!

  279. Stretch October 3, 2008 6:43 pm

    koakane – NOTHING!!

  280. Jason October 3, 2008 6:45 pm

Pretty impressive what those guys have done after their football careers, too. You got a wise blogger, a UH athletic director, a Kaua‘i mayoral candidate, a football coach/athletic director/pastor/almost World’s Strongest Man (yikes!), an agent, a broadcaster/lawyer, a construction company owner, a successful entrepreneur, a jiu jitsu champion — and those are just the ones I recognize!

  281. Garret October 3, 2008 7:09 pm

Colorado is having its homecoming game tomorrow and they sure didn’t pick a pushover like most teams pick for homecoming…Texas will play at Colorado tomorrow. For their homecoming game last year, Colorado fell behind 24-7 and then came back to beat #3 Oklahoma 27-24!

My guess is that Texas spoils Dan Hawkins’ homecoming game, winning by at least 20 points…

  282. Garret October 3, 2008 7:14 pm

Dallas Cowboys’ owner Jerry Jones responded to Terrell Owens’ complaint that they weren’t throwing the ball enough to him (even though they try to throw to him something like 15-20 times per game)…instead of telling Owens to think of what is best for the team, Jerry Jones said that they will force the ball Owens way even if he’s double covered.

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones finally weighed on the Terrell Owens’ controversy of this week.

And not surprisingly, Jones’ backed his receiver and said the Cowboys will continue to try to force the ball to Owens.

  283. Garret October 3, 2008 7:15 pm

    Jason,

That list of OL was *very* impressive!

  284. Garret October 3, 2008 7:19 pm

Samoa News article about Ikaika Malloe’s recruiting trip to Samoa.

Among those fans was Ikaika Malloe, a University of Hawaii defensive tackles coach, special teams coordinator and also football recruiter, arriving in American Samoa last Thursday for his first ever visit expressly for last Saturday’s games.

“I couldn’t have come on a better weekend,” Malloe said at Veterans Memorial Stadium while awaiting the varsity match between the Fa’asao/Marist Crusaders and Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats by taking in the junior varsity game between the Vikings and Wildcats last Friday. “This is the reason why I came this weekend and I will probably leave here with 10 to 15 players to evaluate of each perspective position.”

He left the territory last night and will be back for possibly two more trips within the current school year.

  285. Garret October 3, 2008 7:19 pm

His ethnicity is a plus with parents also.

“For the most part parents are always excited when a Polynesian coach is recruiting,” he explained, “that’s one of the advantages.”

Malloe said that “over 85%” of their players are of Polynesian descent and there are five coaches on the University of Hawaii football staff.

“The one thing about Polynesian players is their toughness and playing with a lot of heart,” the coach said. “I believe that comes from their upbringing, you never have to question their toughness. Size for us is huge, especially for the offensive linemen and linebackers. This is what (American) Samoa can provide for us.”

  286. Jason October 3, 2008 7:19 pm

I think Warren Sapp needs to talk to Jerry Jones about meddling owners. That’s 1990s football! 😉

  287. Garret October 3, 2008 7:20 pm

    Another article mentions coach Malloe.

This weekend was also a special treat for local high school football players because University of Hawaii defensive tackles and special teams coordinator Ikaika Malloe was on island scouting players. He left American Samoa last night (read story later this week).

Garret — I saw your cruise listed as “sold out” yesterday. One of the best deals in the area. A tip on using the ship internet on your laptop (I assume the satellite systems are similar)–either use two browsers or two separate windows– the first to initiate connection and load their interface page/menus. As the interface page is loading, open the second page which is aimed at the blog.

This blogware has so much overhead it will take a while to load anyway, but you might save 30 seconds or so with this technique. Then I used to save the blog web page for reading off-line and copy-paste my prepared comment, not waiting for the refresh in most cases. Each session took around 4 minutes…and when you consider the cost of 75 cents per minute, the time adds up…

  291. OZ October 3, 2008 8:06 pm

    Garret,
re#19: as an academic type with friends at public universities, you know there’s no money for this.

  292. Jason October 3, 2008 8:17 pm

Breaking News: I guess there’s no shrinking glove. O.J. was found guilty of all charges.

  293. Jason October 3, 2008 8:18 pm

Wow, and that was 13 years to the day when he was acquitted.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=3624079

  294. Jason October 3, 2008 8:19 pm

That should read, guilty on all charges.

  295. Garret October 3, 2008 8:30 pm

    SteveM,

Thank you for that suggestion! I think that there is a sale on the first day and it will come out to 50 cents per minute with 10 minutes free…but even at that reduced price every minute saved will be important! The only thing I won’t be able to do is search around for articles…I will download e-mail, the blog, and upload any e-mails that I have saved.

I didn’t realize that our cruise was sold out! I’m happy that I paid less than the airline employee’s discounted price–my sister works for Hawaiian so I was checking fares. With 13 people in our travel party, that savings really adds up!

  296. Garret October 3, 2008 8:33 pm

    OZ,

Some public Universities have the money for sending cheerleaders, many do not. My post was just that I hope that money from outside the Athletic budget is being used to send the cheerleaders, since I don’t want Chancellor Hinshaw to go to Jim Donovan after the fiscal year is over and demand cuts if JD has to include those type of expenses in the budget.

  297. Garret October 3, 2008 8:34 pm

    Jason,

    13 years to the day…what a coincidence!

  298. Garret October 3, 2008 8:36 pm

    SteveM,

If the connection on the ship is slow and the blog’s bloatware takes too long to load, I just won’t be able to check the blog. I will read the stories in the local papers, plus will focus most of my paid internet access time on work e-mail.

I hope that the IT guys don’t mess with the blog and make it too slow again!

  299. Kekoa October 3, 2008 8:45 pm

For Kahuku & Farrington Fans. The score at the half is tied at 6. Both teams missed their PAT. Weight Room dedication clip coming up…

Here on da Wessai, Mililani has a very slim lead at the half over Kapolei.

Garret — my impression was was modem speeds but cruise line systems may vary and wireless technologies have advanced. You might tell us later after you see it.

But at least give us a shout when you reach Cabo San Lucas and tell us your about your cruise, amenities, and activities.

BTW– I checked 3 and 4 days (large ship) cruises from Miami this month since (J)James will be in the neighborhood. $99 – $169 cruises! Even going alone and paying double, still a bargain. Don’t know what a ex-sailor like he would do as a passenger on a boring Bahama cruise though… 😐

    Good evening Tsai-kos!

(J)J’s going to Miami? Have a Cuban sandwich for me! Go to Latin America restaurant. They’re all over Miami. Miami has good Argentinian food too. yummmm. My mouth is droooooling.

Is he going to make big body in South Beach? Can he? hehehehehe.

OK, got the HD box today. Anyone know if the Redskins game is on TV Sunday? Gotta clip da wings of the sparrows.

  311. Garret October 3, 2008 9:24 pm

Long Beach Poly beat a good Lakewood team tonight.

Lakewood quarterback Jesse Scroggins had just hit Tofi Tiedemann on a 23-yard touchdown pass to pull the Lancers within 25-15, still with 10:18 to play in the game.

On the Jackrabbits’ first play from scrimmage following that score, Barner took a handoff from quarterback Morgan Fennell and went blazing down the left sideline for an 80-yard touchdown run. The play took the wind out of the Lancers’ sails and Poly went on to win, 32-15, before a standing-room only crowd of 4,500.

Isa Lufa #8 for Farrington is making his presence known as a linebacker supreme! 5 Taclkes, 2 for losses, 1 sack. He looks very strong when he slams people to the ground…must be the new weight room!

  317. Kekoa October 3, 2008 10:12 pm

Kahuku ends it with the 13-6 score. Even with 140 yards of penalties against them! John Lessary III ‘impact’ player of the game with rushing yards, rec. yds and a booming 56 yard punt!

Kahuku remains undefeated and in sole possesion of the Red Div. East.

Kanoa sez there are 28 former Kahuku players that are currently on the roster and playing D-1 football.

You ever have those days when nothing seems to go right? I think I had mine today.

Then there’s the days everything goes just right…I hope the Warriors have that kind of day today!

    It’s Game Day Ronnie & Rob25!

No fogit hang your sign in front Mr. Kazu-Tanaka (get plenty Cam-a-rah supplies!) at the game.

My neighbors helped me drink all my German wine, and now they all going sleep! I guess I betta go rest up for the Murphy Wars latah on today.

    G’nite all…

ooooops, it’s time for me to get up, but back in Hawaii nei, everyone just getting home from going out, heee heeeee.

when you guyz do get up, let’s rock! GO WARRIORS!!!!

  357. Bulla October 4, 2008 3:37 am

Good morning again to all the Tsaikos,

Wherever you may be….the line in the sand has been drawn, and today we shall fight as Warriors……LET’S GO WARRIORS!!!

It’s 730 in Odgen, and I am going to go and drop the beast off for his game day ritual of team meeting, position meeting, eat, relax, and prepare for battle. Weber State plays Montana Grizzlies, the perennial conference champs. the game is set for 1 pm, rain and 57 degrees as the high temp., with snow in the mountains…..great. no umbrellas allowed = poncho city.

    IMUA WARRIORS
    IMUA WILDCATS

everyone let’s cheer our Warriors on to victory!!!

  358. Hawaiianbod October 4, 2008 3:56 am

    Good morning Bulla!

Best wishes to The Beast and the Wildcats! All his Tsaiko Uncles and Aunties are so proud of him. Now go tell him to kick some Grizzly arse!!! CHEE HOO!

What’s the temp like right now?

btw, how was the chili and rice feast?

Take care brother and keep safe.

  359. Garret October 4, 2008 4:07 am

It is Game Day! Too bad in my case I won’t get to see the game until Thursday night…

  360. Hawaiianbod October 4, 2008 4:20 am

    Good morning Garret!

Enjoy your vacation with all your family/friends…and eat for all us Tsaikos. Try not to work too mich on this trip.

    Keep safe and have fun!

    Bon Voyage!

  361. bighilofan2 October 4, 2008 4:36 am

    Good morning Tsaikos everywhere!

Las Vegas, you get one good job! 😀

Pride, I enjoyed catching up and reading yesterday’s posts.

    Mei Ling, welcome home.

gonna have breakfast with BarryM this a.m., catch up on scoops.

    POMAI,

    i had an epiphany. UH 37-FSU 20.

    Go Warriors!!!!!

  362. wafan October 4, 2008 4:44 am

A very Warrior morning to everyone!!!

Cool, cloudy and rainy. Good weather for football in the PNW.

  363. Bulla October 4, 2008 4:56 am

    Hawaiianbod,

The chili fest was more like David Copperfield disappearing act…or like an Esme whoooooooooosh….made 2 big pots, with a big pot of rice, diced onions, cheese to throw on top and it was history. Even the local girls who hang out with the local boys ‘wen go whack’em’. no worries, nothing like a home cooked meal for college kids.

funny note, trying to cook while the kids are in class…..looking for a can opener, no more, but get 2 ice cream scoops, ahhh, to be kids again.

right now it’s about 58 degrees, light rain, and breeze blowing. it’s going to be wet all day….Wildcats going to battle, this game rivals UH’s game as a game that will determine the rest of the season.

    IMUA WILDCATS
    IMUA WARRIORS

Leave it on the field….every ounce of effort…if you can walk, you didn’t give it your all…there will be only one victor……

do or do not, there is no try

  364. Garret October 4, 2008 4:59 am

    Hawaiianbod,

Good morning to you! Thank you for the well wishes!

I hope that the game goes well today! The first 10 minutes will be critical to set the tone and calm the crowd down a little.

  365. Garret October 4, 2008 5:04 am

USC is telling students who feel ill to stay home…there is a nasty bug spreading around campus.

USC has advice for certain students planning on attending tonight’s game.

    Stay home.

A campus-wide alert was issued early on Saturday morning warning about a suspected “highly contagious gastrointestinal virus.” At least 30 students have required medical treatment for the unknown illness that “is not usually serious, but can cause vomiting, diarrhea and stomach-cramping. The sickness usually has an incubation period of 24- to 48 hours, but may be as short as 12 hours.”

  366. Garret October 4, 2008 5:07 am

I guess Pete Carroll *did* commit an NCAA violation, despite his statement earlier this week on how what he did was okay.

It appears USC coach Pete Carroll committed an NCAA violation when he attended Loyola’s games against Mira Costa of Manhattan Beach and Concord De La Salle on separate days last month.

Mike Matthews, the Pac-10’s associate commissioner of compliance, said NCAA rules stipulate a coach can only evaluate a player once during the fall period, regardless of where the game is being played.

“When a football coach evaluates at a game, he uses an evaluation for every prospect on both teams that are playing the game,” Matthews said. “The (NCAA) rule says, `Not more than one evaluation may be used during the fall evaluation period, and not more than two evaluations may be used during the spring evaluation period.’

“If a football coach watches a football game, they’ve evaluated everybody on both teams in the game.”

One of the most highly recruited juniors in Southern California is Loyola running back Anthony Barr, who received scholarship offers from the Trojans, UCLA, Notre Dame and Stanford.

    Garret . . .

You do realize you are not the only one who will go through withdrawals while you are off-blog. What the heck are we going to do without your “off-topic” and analytical posts?
