Just desserts

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2008

It’s a regular practice week for the Warriors (in preparation for the New Mexico State game), only practice is in El Paso and the workouts will be spread among UTEP and two high school facilities this week. Today, according to UH’s Derek Inouchi, was a normal Monday. The Warriors went through conditioning drills at UTEP. They will have regular practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at high schools, then a walk-through at UTEP Friday. Not sure why they’re not having a […]

Suggestions, anyone?

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2008

When we checked out of the hotel at 5 this morning — I’m assuming it was 5, since I’m still trying to figure out this time-change deal — the only UH staffer up was head trainer Eric Okasaki. He’s had a busy season. And last night was no different. Safety Mana Silva was on crutches after the game, and defensive tackle Josh Leonard didn’t play because of the ankle injury. Eric Okasaki can only do so much. Today’s question is: […]

Utah State upsets UH

By Stephen Tsai on November 1, 2008

Ouch. For the Warriors, that was easily the most devastating loss in recent years. The Warriors made too many mistakes. There were too many penalties, too many dropped passes, too many blown coverages and too many missed opportunities in the red zone. But give credit to that Utah State quarterback. He took some shots, but kept on playing. Greg McMackin said the biggest regret is that he wanted to win out to give the seniors a 10-victory season. That won’t […]

Mouse in the house

By Stephen Tsai on October 31, 2008

OGDEN — As it turned out, the Warriors practiced at Weber State’s practice facility, courtesy of WSU coach Ron McBride. “Hawai‘i’s done a lot for me, it’s the least I can do,” McBride said. The original itinerary called for the Warriors to have a walk-through in the hotel parking lot. Speaking of the hotel, the Portland State football team is here in preparation for tomorrow’s game against Weber State. Mouse Davis greeted the UH players. Jerry Glanville is somewhere in […]

UH takes 3 QBs on trip; highly regarded DB commits

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2008

Tyler Graunke is not on the 64-player travel roster, much to the disappointment of  family members who had hoped to make the drive from Arizona to the New Mexico State game. UH is taking three quarterbacks — Greg Alexander, Inoke Funaki and Brent Rausch. * * * Mike Wadsworth, a 6-foot-1, 192-pound defensive back from Silverado High (Henderson, Nev.), has decided to accept a UH scholarship offer. Wadsworth plays cornerback, safety and weakside linebacker on defense, and tailback and wideout […]

Alexander is named starter

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2008

In an announcement that was more of a formality, Greg Alexander today was named the starting quarterback for Saturday’s game against Utah State. But head coach Greg McMackin said he also has crafted a role for Inoke Funaki, who has started six games this season. Both quarterbacks will play this weekend. Alexander started the season opener against Florida, but did not play significantly until the second half against Nevada, when he rallied the Warrriors to a 38-31 victory. * * […]

Nobriga update

By Stephen Tsai on October 28, 2008

Liloa Nobriga of Palo Verde High (Las Vegas) said he gave a verbal commitment to the UH coaches on Sunday. He then called teammates and his coaches to announce his decision. Nobriga, who moved to Las Vegas last year, said his mother, girlfriend and “my friends” all live in Hawai‘i. But after a meeting with his father tonight, he said he would like to take recruiting trips to other schools. “He wants me to take trips,” said Nobriga, who added, […]

By Stephen Tsai on October 27, 2008

Greg Alexander has been named the WAC’s Offensive Player of the Week. * * * The Warriors yesterday received commitments from Joey Iosefa, a quarterback/safety from American Samoa, and linebacker Liloa Nobriga of Palo Verde High in Las Vegas. Iosefa, who is 6 feet 1 and 190 pounds, was named American Samoa’s 2007 Offensive Player of the Year in football. He also plays basketball, volleyball and soccer. Nobriga is 6 feet 3 and 230 pounds. He attended ‘Iolani School through […]
