Wednesday’s practice

By Stephen Tsai on November 4, 2009

• Wideout Royce Pollard continues to make progress in his recovery from a stress fracture in his left fibula. The odds still are slim against him playing this weekend, especially since he has to wear a light brace. • Safety/nickelback Richard Torres said he will attempt to practice tomorrow. He has a pulled hamstring. • Lametrius Davis apparently has won the left cornerback’s job. He played 60 plays without a double minus. He came out of the game for 10 […]

Tuesday’s practice

By Stephen Tsai on November 3, 2009

• Royce Pollard, who has a stress fracture in his left fibula, worked out today. He status remains iffy for Saturday’s game against Utah State. • With Richard Torres out (pulled left hamstring), Spencer Smith is the nickelback. Mana Silva and Kenny Estes were the safeties. * Quarterback Greg Alexander attended practice. Last month, he underwent surgery to repair two torn ligaments in his left  knee. After that, he was hospitalized when the knee became infected. Alexander lost 30 pounds. […]

Rainy days and Mondays

By Stephen Tsai on November 2, 2009

In a change to the change, the Warriors moved this morning’s scheduled practice to this afternoon. They worked out for more than an hour in the drizzle. Right tackle Adrian Thomas, who missed his second consecutive game because of a sore disk, competed in the drills. Cornerback Jeramy Bryant (partially torn left biceps) and safety/nickelback Richard Torres (pulled left hamstring) did not work out. Their availability is in question for this week. Linebacker Blaze Soares has a 101-degree fever and […]

Day after

By Stephen Tsai on November 1, 2009

• If there is such a thing as playing too fast, then wideout Jovonte Taylor might be a sufferer. He has five drops in the past three games, and all appear to be a result of trying to run upfield before securing the ball. On the other hand, when he does make the catch, his quickness allows him to easily elude defenders. In recent weeks, Taylor’s big plays have overshadowed his mistakes. UH will have to live with that. • […]

UH loses sixth in a row

By Stephen Tsai on October 31, 2009

RENO — It was a familiar theme for the Warrios: too many mistakes, too many missed opportunities. The 14-0 lead was written in smoke, especially with the Colin Kaepernick-led running attack. There were short punts. Fumbled punt returns. A touchdown nullified by a penalty. A touchback nullified by a penalty. Good field position nullified by a penalty. And when the Warriors needed to make a defensive stand, they could not prevent a 6-minute drive that culminated in an insurance-padding field […]

Walk-through

By Stephen Tsai on October 30, 2009

RENO — OK, the first thing play-by-play announcer Bobby Curran noticed about today’s walk-through: Parking at UNR is a quarter for 10 minutes. We only had 30 cents, which bought us about 12 minutes. But I wasn’t worried. The rental is in Ferd’s name. * * * * * It’s Friday, so coach Greg McMackin wore slippers to practice: * * * * * Here’s the stadium: * * * * * And here’s where the Iceman delivered the winning […]

Shutter on travel roster

By Stephen Tsai on October 29, 2009

RENO — As insurance, Cayman Shutter was brought along as the fourth quarterback, behind Bryant Moniz, Brent Rausch and Shane Austin. Shutter will be used only in an emergency situation. The Warriors would like to redshirt the freshman; appearing in any game, even for one play, would jeopardize that. * * * * * The team practices at a local high school today. I think the temperature is in the 40s right now. It’s supposed to dip into the 30s. […]

Ornellas steps in

By Stephen Tsai on October 28, 2009

Kawika Ornellas is getting the first shot to replace Jeramy “J.B.” Bryant at right cornerback. Bryant will not play against Nevada because of an injured left biceps. Bryant said one doctor told hm there was a tear, another said the muscle was stretched. He said he is “week to week.” * * * * * Quarterback Bryant Moniz was cleared to practice today. He suffered a mild concussion in Saturday’s game against Boise State. Moniz will start against Nevada. * * […]
