Rainy days and Mondays

In a change to the change, the Warriors moved this morning’s scheduled practice to this afternoon. They worked out for more than an hour in the drizzle.

Right tackle Adrian Thomas, who missed his second consecutive game because of a sore disk, competed in the drills. Cornerback Jeramy Bryant (partially torn left biceps) and safety/nickelback Richard Torres (pulled left hamstring) did not work out. Their availability is in question for this week. Linebacker Blaze Soares has a 101-degree fever and did not practice, although he attended the workout.

Just noticed that Ikaika Malloe is doing well in his first season as Yale’s defensive coordinator. Yale is allowing 13.3 points per game.

I hope that the practice goes well today.

  2. Garret November 2, 2009 6:21 am

I just read Pride’s excellent post in yesterday’s blog–I didn’t realize that the Warriors are outscoring the other teams in the first and fourth quarters but are suffering big drops in both the second and third quarters. Maybe the scripted plays help UH get off to a great start in the game (Washington State, Nevada, etc.) but then the adjustments by the other team shows up in the 2nd and 3rd quarters.

  3. Garret November 2, 2009 6:23 am

It was interesting that Alex Green said that pass blocking was one of his weaknesses at his JC. That explains why he might be taking some time to get his blocking to a level good enough so that he can get more playing time.

It also means that UH recruited a RB who couldn’t block well. Still, it is probably easier to teach a good runner to block than to teach a blocker to run.

  4. Garret November 2, 2009 6:27 am

No wonder Utah State is improved–their QB Borel is #2 in the WAC (only behind Kaepernick) in total offense. And their RB Turbin is the second leading rusher in the WAC (109 points per game). At least UH just faced the best rushing offense in the WAC so they should be prepared for Utah State’s offense.

Both of their stars will be back next season, so they should be even tougher then.

  5. Garret November 2, 2009 6:30 am

David Veikune should get a lot of playing time on defense the rest of the season.

Linebacker Eric Barton left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return. With D’Qwell Jackson already out for the season, the Browns were thin at inside linebacker. At times, both rookies Maiava and David Veikune were inside together.

I would love to see us run the ball 30-40 times. Just pound it. We need to get the O Line in a rhythm, make them accountable for moving the line of scrimmage and let them have some fun doing it! Pound it hard!

  13. Slugger November 2, 2009 7:02 am

    postmanke,

    (I’m just a novice, so I don’t know much, but…)
If you run the football 30-40 times, wouldn’t you need more O-line players to have trained on specific blocking routines to open up lanes for the runner? It’ll take time to develop more guys who know what they are supposed to do if you run more versus pass, wouldn’t you? You need to be able to rotate the players out of the game to give them a break, so you’d need more players familiar with the blocking schemes.

    Pride.,

We talked about mixing the run w/ passing to throw off the opponent’s defense last week. The plays on our side would have to be called fast (no huddle) to prevent the defense from adjusting, right?

    on the blowout losses?

  16. postmanke November 2, 2009 7:38 am

    Slugger #13

uh, No. GS and the O line is more than capable of running the ball 30-40 times. Right up GS’s alley. nothing fancy, just commit and pound it. Good things will come of it esp inside the red zone. running 20 times aint enough. Deep inside Mac knows this. You’ll still get your +300 yards passing but your Recv will be just a little more wide open. Try it…

  17. ProudArmyWife808 November 2, 2009 8:00 am

Well, I voted with the 3% on the advertiser poll… I didn’t think the alternatives they gave were very nice. (I guess that’s my “mom” perspective kicking in.) My kids still wear their 12-0 t-shirts like they’re prized possessions. I’ve had my moments of despair this season, but I’m really thinking of buying tickets for Saturday just because.

  19. Buffoman November 2, 2009 8:12 am

    #16, #13

I will jump in and also state that we need to run the ball more. When JJ was here I would not be as forthcoming in saying this and my past posts indicate why. Simply put, our OC’s do not think like JJ when it comes to seeing the field and understanding the passing game. When he (JJ) once said his idea of a great game is to not run the ball, he was eblievable as he had “that understanding and could execute with a high level of success.”

Now, we are here without JJ so the passing game is different and because it is and we have seen cannot operate at the same level as JJ, we need to do something different, something that allows us to balance the game.

    Thus, the run.

So, as I’ve suggested in the past, create our own hybrid and insert a TE to help with the blocking. If we are going to run 30+ times and people are going to know that, let’s better prepare to do it by creating a better blocking scheme. The TE could be a hybrid type we’d look for, someone that can block, runs well, great hands, in other words like HUGE slot guy (not Salas, bigger).

But again (the disclaimer) I am not football coach so what do I know. Just a fan with a whole roll of pennis so I can keep adding my “2 cents”.

  20. Buffoman November 2, 2009 8:14 am

    Ha, ha.

  21. James November 2, 2009 9:15 am

Maybe injecting second, third or even fourth string quarterbacks in the second and third quarters may spark the team and give it a lift. Admit it, Moniz is not doing the job during those periods. Let him rest and give other guys a chance. There is nothing to lose, absolutely nothing. He still has to win his first game as QB. Where is Inoke? He should be able to come in and contribute and spark the team as QB. He is a true leader on the field. Play the guys who have proven themselves, have a strong desire to win and bring positive results. I am not faulting Bryant Moniz. He is good. However, it is a team effort and the coaches should utilize all the resources available at the quarterback position. The quarterback position is the biggest weakness now as I see it as an ardent UH fan. If Greg Alexander were healthy the team would be winning games. However, he is injured and out for the season. Hope the coaching staff makes the proper adjustments. The season is not over. We still have five more games. The team can still go out a winner.

  24. al November 2, 2009 9:54 am

utah st. is a critical game for moniz.
he has shown flashes of brilliance.
but, needs to be more consistent in several areas.

for one, he needs to find the right receiver at least 75% of the time.

two, he needs to hit the long ball 75% of the time.

three, he needs to develop when to air it and when to put touch on the ball. (no shame zip it in)

three and a half, cut down the int’s.

four, he needs to take care of his arm after every practice/game.

five, the coaches/trainers need to realize that his arm strength is not prepared for throwing 100x a day at this juncture. one can see that his arm is a bit fatigued. late in the game he is dropping his arm below his shoulder level. perhaps this is one of the reasons for much of the aforementioned.

    six, never give up!

    Monday Nov. 2, 2009
Port of Kahului – day 2, sailing for Hilo at 1800

It’s been less than 48 hours aboard ship and my tummy is threatening strike again…citing overload and long work hours. It’s only been 4 weeks since the Mexico cruise. Note to self: Do not go one cruises less than 6-8 weeks apart. Letsee–when is 8 weeks from now…? 🙂

I have received two invitations to cocktail parties tonight and tomorrow evening. Both are frequent cruiser related and are hosted by the Captain, so the drinks are free. Wide variety of speciality mixed drinks on trays. Being a non-drinker, a server has to make a special trip to the bar for my diet coke. Long Time UH Fan, Tom Mui, jm2375, and Garret would receive invitations too. Maybe hwnstln in LA too, but I don’t have his complete cruise dossier. 🙂

Mom is contemplating one of the many spa treatments.

    If this was a Tsai-ko Cruise…
Pool deck party from 1330-1630 with entertainment by Jimmy Mac and the Kool Kats. Hang out at the Key West bar and grill overlooking the pool if you’re not napping.

Standby to meet in the Gold Rush Saloon again as we leave Kahului and the grand excursions with the Maui Tsai-ko Chapter. Hilo tomorrow morning. Monday night football live at 2:30 PM and the “buy 5, get 1 free” helmet beer bucket available. Karaoke from 9:00 PM again.

Martini Happy Hour (2030-2130) in the Deck 13 Lanai “Martini” Bar has 50% off. Comedy Showtime in the Hollywood theater at 1900 and 2100. For the Tsaikettes, “White Hot” dance party in Club Mardi Gras from 2200 features the “ship and male” dancers. No one under 18.

    afterthoughts…
everytime an offensive flag went up my first thoughts were, “kia!”.
and so, i would be right too often.

    at first i’d be upset.
now, i realize that kia is just trying so hard to do the job that in his exuberance he will jump off early or perhaps he is that quick.

needless to say, i won’t bash a student for trying to make a play.
kia is just that, trying to make a play against the opponents best pass rushers is not an easy task. i am sure that he grades out at least 75% doing a good job.

for all the plays that we run, the oline has done fairly well. well enough for us to win offensively.

defense is emerging inspite of the continuous plaguing injuries. but, that is the game we play.

coaches too, need to step up.

oh, and yah. we need to run more often. it starts with we need to practice the run better and more perfectly.

finally, whew, its time to give alex green his day in the sun.

  33. aaron November 2, 2009 10:17 am

food for thought: go back to our most successful offensive seasons (2006 and 2007) and see how much we ran the ball. JJ may have always said that he’d rather not run, but success didn’t come until the running game became a bigger part of the offense. the ONLY time we’ve ever beat Boise was when we were able to run the ball effectively. that speaks volumes.

  34. jm2375 November 2, 2009 10:19 am

    Pride,

What I found fascinating by the numbers you posted was the big difference between UH dominating the scoring in the first quarter and then the opponents dominating the scoring in the second quarter. I stumbled upon the 3rd quarter stats when I looked things up one day, but I didn’t check the 1st/2nd quarter scoring splits before.

  39. Garret November 2, 2009 10:41 am

I will jump in and also state that we need to run the ball more. When JJ was here I would not be as forthcoming in saying this and my past posts indicate why.

    buffoman,

The interesting thing is that JJ is running the ball MUCH more at SMU than UH is running the ball this season…even more than when he had Nate in 2006. Green/LWJ/Chizzy all together have 82 carries, and McNeal/Line together have run the ball 171 times! That means that JJ has called runs much more than UH has. In their last game (partially to help a true freshman starting his first college game), SMU had 41 rushes and 30 passes.

In the red zone, UH has 4 rushing TDs and 9 passing TDs. SMU has 8 rushing TDs and 6 passing TDs. UH got into the red zone 33 times and SMU just 21 times, but SMU has scored more TDs.

The paper said this morning that Hawaii is in the 2nd year of the rebulding phase. With the starting OL all leaving this year, next year is a rebuillding year too. Most of the DL and 2/3 of the LB corps will also be departing. What does that tell you?
    1) It ain’t gonna be good again next year. Boise St. just reloads w/ underclassmen.
    2) With the schedule next year it doesn’t bode well either w/ USC, on the road at Army, at Colorado, at Boise, at Fresno, at Utah St..
    3) What is the redshirting QBs look in practice?
    4) I still say that UH should employ 3 wides w/ a TE or another blocking lineman to help the runnning game some of the time. Look at other successful teams!
    5) We don’t have a hurry up offense. There is no urgency.
    6) Funaki did not smell the game last week, except holding on kicks. I feel so bad for him. He should be playing more.
    7) Another power team bites the dust, USC….along w/ Georgia, Fla. St., Virginia Tech, and Oklahoma. I don’t feel so bad now about UH. Still, the statistics show that UH is one of the worst teams in the country, if not the worst. It would be a good game between us and Rice and Western Kentucky.
    8) W/ us being winless and at the bottom of the WAC conference standings I wonder what JD is going to do? Attendance is falling.
    9) The team have lost games by their own mistakes, not the other team.
That’s the disturbing thing. Inexperiece and injuries are a poor excuse.
    10) We have a fighting chance this week….if……well, you know.

    postmanke,

Thanks for elucidating. If the O-line can block for the RBs, then we should use more running plays. I also wonder why LWJ seems to get stopped more often than not. I still think he needs tai chi/push hands training to help his peripheral vision & to sense the bodies coming after him. Alex Green can power his way through, but Leon is more like a race horse. Earlier in the season, I observed the RBs going through tackling drills; maybe they just need to practice it again.

    RedZone,

I wasn’t sure what you meant with your post #47, so I looked up SMU’s depth chart to see how many of the previous coach’s recruits they were playing. I was surprised at how young their OL is!

    LT: SO starter, SO backup
    LG: SO starter, FR backup
C: SR starter, SO backup (the SR is hurt so the SO might start)
RG: SO starter, FR backup (the FR will start this week against Rice)
    RT: SO starter, FR backup

That is a very, very young OL that Adrian Klemm has molded into an excellent pass-blocking and run-blocking unit. This is Coach Klemm’s first year as an OL coach and he is doing an impressive job! If Coach Shaw leaves UH in the future I’d put Coach Klemm near the top of my wish list (Coach Cav is always the #1 OL coach on my wish list).

SMU’s travel roster for the game at Tulsa had 9 seniors and 45 underclassmen.

It’s kinda curious that JJ is doing things at SMU that we never saw in Hawaii. Wonder why?

Ever consider doing the same researsh for UH and see what bodes for 2010? Seems Coach Mack is very set in playing “seniors” and maybe in some cases not playing the “best” or who plays are the best Warriors?

Meyer has no cajones. Even Dan Wetzel agrees:

Eye-gouging is considered such a foul, filthy act that it’s banned by even our most blatantly combative exercises, including mixed martial arts and pro wrestling.

Sheriff Urban Meyer of the Gainesville PD isn’t as concerned, apparently.

Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes was caught on film purposefully jamming his fingers through the facemask of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey on Saturday in an effort to rip at Ealey’s eyes.

It was about as ugly and unbecoming of a play as there is in football.

For the act, Meyer will bench his star linebacker for the first half of the Gators’ game against Vanderbilt.

Repeat: one half. That penalty isn’t a joke, although the man dishing it out is acting like one.

    Garret,

    True and that’s my point.

That’s JJ, who once said that a perfect game was one where he never had to run the ball.

We do not have JJ. This is different. We think we can be like him, but there’s only one JJ, who now runs the ball 30 times at SMU. He sees the offensive side of the game in a whole different way and the sooner we stop believing and acting as though he was here running our offense, the quicker we may be able to find some level of success.

  74. Garret November 2, 2009 1:59 pm

    A-House,

I like it when a coach with a long-term contract plans for the long-term by playing a lot of freshmen and sophomores. I’ve seen that happen in so many other schools where the team might struggle one or two seasons because they play such young players, but when the players are juniors and seniors the team really improves and surprises people. Idaho and Utah State played with a young team in the past year or two and now they are much better, with Idaho 7-2 and Utah State improving a lot in their first year under their new coach.

Maybe UH would have done the same thing if they hadn’t had so many of the high school recruits either decommit (like the recruit that went to Oregon) or not get into school (a whole bunch fell into this category). If the high school recruits don’t get into school, then you cannot plan for the future and you end up relying on JC players or players from the previous coaching staff.

I didn’t go to the Na Koa lunch today; too much to do. Did anyone go?

  76. d1島 November 2, 2009 2:03 pm

Mofomi-sized turnout at Na Koa today.

Coach Ron gave a very detailed video session of the things that they are working to correct in the passing game between Moniz and the receivers. Prior to that he took some questions.

    – Not using the Reno DL yelling at our OL as an excuse for false starts. Some caused by being over-anxious to setup for pass pro, one time a “new” WR jumped maybe because of worrying about being in a new position.
    – They are committed to passing the ball. Going back to Spring ball, the thought was that it would take 35-40 points per game to win games due to losses on defense side. Not going to change now; can’t score that much against teams like Navy and Wiscy if they try to run the ball.
    – Disappointed in ST overall, “can’t be off-sides on a kick-off”…especially not a guy who is the Safety on the KO team! Can’t kick 1 and 9 yard punts; can’t kick OB on KO’s.
    – Really miss GA and RB; feels Jovonte Taylor is big time.
    – Alex Green and Chizzy and LWJ are all doing good but they still feel their best chance to win comes from throwing the ball.

  77. Garret November 2, 2009 2:05 pm

    Buffoman,

I agree with you. JJ has a true freshman at QB (who only started for half a season in high school!) and a lot of young players on offense and defense. So, he had his team run 41 times and they won the time of possession battle by more than 15 minutes. If I remember right, SMU had the ball for more than 37.5 minutes and Tulsa had the ball for less than 22.5 minutes.

Or, it could be that Adrian Klemm is really good at teaching an OL to run block with the offense that JJ runs. The starting RB is injured and could miss practice this week, the starting RG is injured and will have to miss their next game, and the starting C has a high ankle sprain…but still they can run the ball.

  78. Garret November 2, 2009 2:08 pm

    d1shima,

Thank you for the Na Koa luncheon information!

If the running game is working (like in a previous game when LWJ was on a roll), I wish they would stick with it a little more. UH doesn’t have to run all the time, just often enough to try to ease the pressure on the QBs and keep the defense from getting too used to rushing the QB.

I agree with all the things you mentioned about the ST.

  79. (Jesse) James November 2, 2009 2:09 pm

Good afternoon Tsaikos…hope all is well…busy, busy, busy

  80. Garret November 2, 2009 2:09 pm

Mac’s weekly press conference is up on UH’s website.

On turning the corner after six straight losses…

We went to this Michael Jackson movie this past weekend. The one thing that stood out for us as a football team was the song “Man in the Mirror.” You listen to that song and it’s exactly like our football team. You’ve got to look in the mirror at yourself and say its time to change, and do what you’re talking about. And we talked about that. Whether you’re young or not, you need to take responsibility for your actions. We played six or seven freshman on Saturday. But they are not freshmen anymore. They have got to stand up. Everybody has to stand up. That’s what really made sense to me. And I think the players got the message too.

  81. Slugger November 2, 2009 2:12 pm

    Garret,

#77 ~ Re: HS recruits getting into school – That’s one thing that Coach Mack seems to emphasize. These are students who have to pass admissions requirements and then graduate to keep our APR up. Kudos to the Coach for maintaining that standard. Most of the players will not get into an NFL team, so their education is a big value.

  82. d1島 November 2, 2009 2:16 pm

    Summoa stuff…

Asked if Moniz is going thru his reads correctly (this was before he showed film). Basically Coach Ron said that for him coming from 4th on the depth, non-schollie QB, Moniz is ahead of where he should be but he’s smart and learns quick.
He needs more reps but (paying attention Al?) because of his concussion and the few reps he had in Spring, Summer and Fall they limit his reps now to keep him away from injury. He will be a good one; Coach Ron likes that he has 2 more years. He will be working on his arm strength after this year.

After watching the film with his explanation, I’m pretty satisfied that things are really not too far away from getting the offense back on track. The plays that didn’t work are not schematically bad but just technically the receivers and Moniz need to get better at identifying the proper solutions. There are open receivers and better options on virtually every play and for those not in that category if small alignment and route running errors can be corrected and/or learned from the 35-40 point per game goal should be attainable.

  83. Garret November 2, 2009 2:17 pm

    A-House,

I think a lot of it has to do with recruiting budgets. If you have just $50k for recruiting, you cannot afford to waste any money. So, you have to limit yourself into going after players who want to be a Warrior to cost-effectively recruit. If you have $170k to recruit (which Mac has now), you can send coaches to every school that you are recruiting an athlete and bring in recruits for official visits that are not committed to UH (like UH did last season with at least one uncommitted recruit).

Since you asked about 2010, here is the depth chart according to UH’s press release:

    LT: Sr. Kia, So. Hansen
    LG: Sr. Hisatake, So. Hansen
    C: Sr. Estes, Jr. Tiwanak
    RG: Sr. Ieru, So. Lefiti
RT: So. Hansen, Jr. Thomas (Sr. Letuli was the starter until getting hurt)

I think that all the receivers who play will be back in 2010, which is great. One thing that worries me is that pretty much all the starters and the backups who have played (except for Avery, a Soph.) will be seniors next season. Aside from Avery, ALL of the receivers will be gone after next season.

  84. Slugger November 2, 2009 2:19 pm

    d1,

Thanks for the report. What does “Mofomi” mean?

  85. Garret November 2, 2009 2:21 pm

    Slugger,

One problem though is that you can only recruit between 20 and 25 players each year. Some of those will be from JCs, so there are only a limited number of spots for high school recruits. If 5 to 7 of those high school recruits don’t get into UH, then the team cannot truly rebuild.

Mac doesn’t have a choice about admission standards, so I wouldn’t give him credit for players not getting into school. If UH is worried about the APR, we should worry that so many high school recruits are not admitted to the University. I know that may be because of silly requirements like the written part of the SAT/ACT, but if we want to make sure that players graduate we shouldn’t have to worry if they are going to be able to admitted into UH.

  86. Garret November 2, 2009 2:25 pm

By the way, one Tsaiko had been corresponding with Chancellor Hinshaw about the written portion of the SAT/ACT being required by UH. Chancellor Hinshaw pointed out that because of UH’s requirements a student could get into MIT and Harvard but *not* get into UH, as a way to explain UH’s requirements.

I do not think that UH is harder to graduate from than MIT or Harvard, so I do not understand why it would be a good thing for UH to exclude students that those schools would accept. But it seems that there are a lot of barriers in place to prevent these admission requirements from being changed.

  87. expat November 2, 2009 2:27 pm

Alex Green certainly has potential, but LWJ is still ahead of him in average yards per carry — although Green is catching up. LWJ does seem to like/need space more.

  88. d1島 November 2, 2009 2:27 pm

    Garret,

The Former Coach ran the ball 41 times last week. It was explained that he is probably “doing what he has to” to get the wins. If I read between the lines of that, my guess is that he doesn’t feel that he has the personnel to be successful throwing it as much as Hawaii fans would expect him to.
When I watch the film with Coach Ron explaining what was going on, it seems to me that is not the situation Hawaii is in. Guys are open or if they run routes correctly will be open or will open up their teammate. I don’t get the feeling that the Hawaii coaches feel like their players aren’t capable of getting that done real soon!

  97. Garret November 2, 2009 3:00 pm

    d1shima,

I hope that UH gets the passing game going soon. There are only 5 games left and the next 3 games would be a great time for the offense to click–if the offense can get going, these next 3 games are definitely winnable and then the team would look completely different to fans and recruits.

I always wanted UH to win the ball more when JJ was coach, which is why I liked the 2006 offense the best.

With Oregon having two schools that play D1 football, but graduating only 11.4 D1 football players per year, that means that technically they have only 5.4 D1 athletes to share if they were to share equally.

While the state of California, with their 387 D1 football players a year, split among seven D1 football schools. Each D1 school would be allowed 55.3 D1 players per year.

Pride I think coaching changes the past couple of seasons hurt USC but I think Pete will bounce back.

SMU has an all conference wide receiver and the one who coaches wrs is Jeff Reinebold. I have always believed that good coaches can coach any position. I miss watching Jeff work with the dline but I do like watchng Shaw work with the oline.

Garrett I thought I heard that the center during the Tulsa game was a freshman but I may be wrong. I do know that the quarterback was and he looks really good. And overall this season as I have stated before JJ has more rushing attempts than passing. It is interesting to note that he did pick up an all state runnining back who is 6’1 and 238 lbs. But the leading rusher is I think a senor who just may hit the 1,000 mark this season. Next year I think SMU will be the team to watch in C-USA.

  132. Ralph November 2, 2009 5:04 pm

SMU started a senior at center, Enright, he re-injured his ankle and McJunkin, Soph, came in. lots of freshmen and soph. on the OL and DL. No seniors started at LB. So I don’t know why Mac doesn’t give some of the younger guys some PT for experience.

Coach Ron says Moniz is very accurate; showed a few examples: one where ball was placed perfectly for a reception and another that was thrown right where receiver should have been but he ran a route 3 yds too deep so looks like QB underthrew.

  141. Ralph November 2, 2009 5:44 pm

don’t have to write the year off, but the coach should rotate more players into the mix. I recall coach mac stating that he was planning on rotating 8 receivers in the game, but he didn’t, and each time we had a player injured, the replacement had no experience or minimal reps. Guys like Avery and Pollard. Haven’t seen Tinoco. is there a ryan clark at slot? We were down to BSU a lot, why not give the young OL some reps, its not about quitting, its about building the team’s depth with PT and rewarding the 2nd and 3rd team with PT for their hard work at practice.

  142. d1島 November 2, 2009 5:47 pm

“Reward” the 2nd and 3rd team guys with PT when they push the starters to play good enuf to get up by 4 TD’s in the 4th….

    …or 6 in the 3rd. 😈

  143. Ralph November 2, 2009 5:49 pm

D1 you had another long delivery day or was traffic bad? 🙂

  144. Ralph November 2, 2009 5:53 pm

D1 we’re on a losing streak, its the other team that is 4 TD’s up in the 4th. You’re so funny. Tell that to the 2nd and 3rd team guys, listen for the groan or look for the stink eye, these players are working just as hard as the 1st team guys and feel just as bad as them when the team loses.

  145. d1島 November 2, 2009 5:55 pm

The receivers who are playing need the reps with Moniz to get better.

  146. d1島 November 2, 2009 6:02 pm

    Ralph,

UH was down by 4+ TD’s vs B$U; the only other time was vs the Fresnecks at 42-3 at the end of the 3rd Q. The team was 2-2 at that time, should the coach have emptied the bench then?

Noticed in todays paper they had a poll about UH football :

How are you feeling about the University of Hawaii football season so far?

    Depressed – 41.3
    cautiously optimistic – 14.4
can still make the Hawaii Bowl – 3.1
    don’t care – 41.3
That last one is what is wrong with this program!!! IMHO

    I’m in the 3.1

As of 6:16pm HS the poll stats are:

    Depressed – 41.0
    cautiously optimistic – 15.2
can still make the Hawaii Bowl – 4.1
    don’t care – 39.7

41.0 + 15.2 + 4.1 = 60.3% of those participating in the poll show some sort of care for UH football pessimistic or not.

39.7 miss 2007, well they actually only miss the months of November and December 07 and can’t even remember the rest.

Me, being me, I could give a rat’s okole about the 39.7%, but business-wise UH needs them.

Used to think winning is the only way to get people in the seats, but in 06 and 07 we did that well and YET only three sell-outs in those two seasons COMBINED.

I think if you can satisfy the 60.3% we’d be in pretty good shape.

As for the 39.7%, they come when they come. Probably if someone “get free ticket yeah?” 🙄

  148. d1島 November 2, 2009 6:12 pm

    Kazz,

The way to “spin” that is from this morning to now 33% more people are feeling that UH can still make it to the Hawaii Bowl! 😉

  149. Slugger November 2, 2009 6:15 pm

    Whew! Phillies win.

  150. Slugger November 2, 2009 6:18 pm

  151. Kazz November 2, 2009 6:21 pm

    D1,

I took the blockquoted post from Pomai earlier in the day (previous blog entry) and I dunno how some stats actually “decreased”? 😯

Maybe ppl at the advertiser found some poll enteries that managed to sneak through as some people voting more than once… Happens alot… It’s a nice illusion! 😆

  152. Ralph November 2, 2009 6:24 pm

D1 not empty the bench but the coach got to feel good about his number 2 guy at each position. It’s not like saying let the guy play the entire quarter or x number of plays. A series or part of a series, if it is only 3 and out so be it. Playing the number two guy also gives the number one some needed rest, especially the wr who is most often running vertical routes to open the field.

  154. Kazz November 2, 2009 6:30 pm

Watching the Coach Mack Show now, and you can see it in the eyes of Moniz what ST meant the night of the game in which he took the loss hard.

All players take the loss hard, but I can see the combination of youth, drive, and passion when he spoke.

Moniz and the rest of our Warriors are the ones to salvage the season, whether that means a Hawaii Bowl appearance or finishing as strong as possible with our injuries and struggles, but the bottom line is the players and coaches are the ones to fix all the problems. That takes olos. BIG olos. Bigger than the ones needed to type behind a computer screen and sit in your local Korean bar with your arms crossed while swearing at the TV to some kids that would POUND anyone that talks crap to their face in real life.

Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but our Warriors will take care of their own.

Enjoyed the piece on Alex Dunnachie. Had no idea UCLA and were also taking a look at him as well.

Not sure about the “internet sensation” stuff prior to his arrival at UH though…

Good kid, good size, good leg… soon to be “great leg”, he’ll be ok.

Still not too sure if Coach Tormey is about to “abandon” his preference of directional punts when advising Dunnachie, but if that’s the way Tormey wants it, then Dunnachie has no choice but to… In that case, he’ll be good at it sooner than later.

    😎

Chawan did more yelling than me that night. Honestly, was too tired and by the time I got home from the game and some other things it was like 2am. Will try to do so following the Wahine basketball game. No injuries to report from the Wahine, so should get a decent look at all of the players or potential starters.

  163. Garret November 2, 2009 6:44 pm

I’ve read several articles now about how Miami’s head coach is publicly showing his unhappiness with Bess’ play in their last two games. At least Bess will keep his punt return job after fumbling in two straight games.

Without mentioning names, Sparano obviously was disappointed in Davone Bess’ second straight poor game in which he lost a fumble and dropped a pass. He almost lost two fumbles but fortunately for the Dolphins the Jets chose not to challenge the call on the field.

“We’ve got to take care of the football,” Sparano said.. “We can’t put the ball on he ground. Period.”

Although Bess fumbled away a punt, Sparano said he would still retain punt-returning duties, and Ginn would remain the kickoff returner.

I like dis earlier post today

By the way, one Tsaiko had been corresponding with Chancellor Hinshaw about the written portion of the SAT/ACT being required by UH. Chancellor Hinshaw pointed out that because of UH’s requirements a student could get into MIT and Harvard but *not* get into UH, as a way to explain UH’s requirements.
I do not think that UH is harder to graduate from than MIT or Harvard, so I do not understand why it would be a good thing for UH to exclude students that those schools would accept. But it seems that there are a lot of barriers in place to prevent these admission requirements from being changed.

you hit da nail right on da head. “It seems that there are a lot of barriers in place to prevent these admission requirements from being
    changed.”

we got alot of elucidating, computating and self congragulating by peeps who got a degree and are continuing to aspire to a higher elucidating, computating and self congragulating, got anudda 5 years to go in the ERS system, no like do nuttin, hoping Medicare, Social Security and ERS continue and talk so my hyperbole and .. and … and b.s. dat …
Inoke going retire from Laie before the ACT/SAT/FBS change.

those peeps at UH Admissions are also in da 41%, da ainokea 41%.

  171. bighilofan2 November 2, 2009 7:15 pm

    hiya whitey…

so, whats the spread on the USU game?

  172. whitey November 2, 2009 7:16 pm

I don’t know if the punter is told to kick in a certain direction, but if he is, i think whoever is responsible should look at that as being a bunch of baloney. This is not the first time directional punting has hurt the team. The kicker is young and the best thing is to just let him kick away till he gets very comfortable with the games.

  173. bstunna2002 November 2, 2009 7:18 pm

I’d like to see Avery get a shot at wideout and move Kealoha back to the inside and maybe see Lewis Walker and Lemetrius Davis start or use Walker in the nickle package to replace Torres for now, I’m really impressed at what Walker brings to the table I would like to see him on the field in some capacity, just IMHO

  174. whitey November 2, 2009 7:20 pm

bhf2, it will take an adminstrative attorney to decifer uh’s entrance requirement because it is subject to non specifics essays which have no valid reason to deny a young man/woman entry to uh. imho, i think the admission’s office is so entrenched and not flexible, they will not listen to out side academic people cause it will hurt their pride.

  175. Ralph November 2, 2009 7:20 pm

Kuehu maybe just a headache or mild concussion, supposedly bumped heads with team mate last week. As a precaution they kept her out.

  176. whitey November 2, 2009 7:21 pm

imho, the team is not in condition to play the full game.

  177. Pomai November 2, 2009 7:25 pm

whitey he is doing what he is told, I don’t know why they are letting him just boom them down the field, if you will notice the first time he did last game UH got the ball on the fluff. We have seen this time after time in practice where the kick returner has a hard time handling his kicks. Coach let him kick it!!!!!!!

  178. whitey November 2, 2009 7:26 pm

watching the no saints tonight was quite interesting, not because they won, but how they prepare for the game, team condition, and using technology to help them. i don’t know much about the “mouthpiece” they wear, but much was said about how it helps them. reference about how their coach is a perfectionis on walk through was another interesting factor. i don’t know how the saints practice walk throughs, but i am sure that they don’t practice it in the hotel lobby or meeting room.

  179. whitey November 2, 2009 7:28 pm

pomai, thanks for the info. everyone who has watched practice knows ad can punt the ball for distance and hang time and that in itself is a huge weapon, but this is another thing about coach tormey not paying attention to something special.

  180. whitey November 2, 2009 7:31 pm

i like the o line cause they are doing their job of giving the qb 3-4 sec to read and make the play. i would play hansen at rt for the rest of the season cause he is learning how to play that position better with each game. i still say that running behing estes is the best cause he is the best run/pass blocker.

  181. Ralph November 2, 2009 7:33 pm

no Whitey they don’t practice in the hotel lobby, in fact, UH used their indoor facility for the Sugar Bowl practices. Lots of folks dissed JJ for not practicing at the super dome, felt it made the difference in the offense performance, actually it was the Georgia defense that made the difference. The Saints uses its practice facility but plays in the super dome, you notice tonight it did not interfere with their performance, yes the played in the dome before, only when we lose we find fault elsewhere.

  183. Kona Girl November 2, 2009 7:36 pm

Moniz really was taking the loss hard after the game. He was the first one to head to the locker room and was really hanging his head. I tried to encourage him and tell him to hold it high…lead and they will follow. The rest of the team was hanging theirs too. Understandably, it was a tough, self-inflicted loss.

HOWEVER, there were also some very encouraging moments too….we scored touchdowns, Taylor showed his speed and it was a much more competitive game than anyone expected….even the Wolfpack.

I really think we, as fans, are to blame too. We could have helped the team turn it around. Whenever the team is down, the fans are too. This is so crazy…it is our responsibility as the “12th Man” to do whatever we can to encourage our team and distract/intimidate the opponent…we failed terribly. We had plenty of fans in the stands that could have and should have made some noise during defensive plays, especially with the metal bleachers, but it was only on a few occasions that we got it together and cheer loud enough. C’mon “road warriors:, let’s get it together for the San Jose game to help intimidate the Spartans. If we work the stands as hard as the boyz are working the field, I bet we can really make a difference!!!

De-fense, stomp, stomp! De-fense, stomp, stomp!!!! on EVERY defensive play!!!

    Let’s Go Warriors, Let’s Go!!!!!

  184. whitey November 2, 2009 7:36 pm

alex g should be the #1 rb. #5, the moose should be the starting mlb, hands down. would like to see m wadsworth get more playing time on defense. it appears that the injuries that blaze s (my favortie d player) suffered last year has truly hurt his performance this year. somehow his speed and bone crunching tackles is not up to par.

  185. bighilofan2 November 2, 2009 7:38 pm

we gots to help out Tuioti. we gots to help out our University. da economy and Furlough Days give us a good opportunity to make
the kinds of changes that will help out our school, our State.

because for sure, we’ve been hinting at the problems with Admissions for along time. Kind of like taking about and taking on changes with BCS, when the right moment and opportunity comes along to foster the change, then full on, go!

we can find and make a silver lining out of our dilemma. that Okla WR SNAFU last year should count for something.

  193. Ralph November 2, 2009 7:46 pm

UH requires algebra II for entrance and includes the essay parts of the SAT and ACT and 2 years of foreign language to graduate from UH. I may be wrong on the language portion, but it did apply to my daughter’s BA degree in Anthropology. Not all colleges require algebra II, the essay portion or foreign language.

  194. Kazz November 2, 2009 7:48 pm

During fall camp, Alex Dunnachie and Coach Tormey were “joined at the hip” for the first 20 minutes before practices officially started.

Lots of directional punting being instructed and a lot of times Dunnachie was able to get the ball and the returner pinned on his own 5-15 yard line. Of course there was no pressure on Dunnachie at that time. Later on, they practiced full ST units with full rushes on Dunnachie in which he did well also.

I think the directional punting and kicking has taken away LARGE returns on us this season on average, HOWEVER it has obviously led to EXCELLENT field positioning by the OTHER team in the last 3 games or so.

Just a guess, but perhaps the confidence or the personnel isn’t there right now for Coach Tormey to be comfortable with letting Enos and Dunnachie just “kick away”. If the ball hits the middle of the field… BANG! A 40, 50, TD return by the other team perhaps? Who knows.

Dunnachie has been about 50/50 on a few instances (at Seattle and at Nevada) the punt returner couldn’t handle his punts and led to turnovers in favor of us. In the Fresno State game, I believe he had about two punts inside the FSU 25 and one inside the 15. He had a so-so debut against UCA and had bad punts against BSU and Nevada.

He’ll be ok. He’s a talent. Raw, but a talent. If he was a JUCO kid I’d be worried more.

  195. whitey November 2, 2009 7:50 pm

bhf2, crushing he can do, but to do that part, he needs his speed and lb mentality to come together which seems to be affected by his major injuries last year. he is a game changer when healthy, but right now, he does not appear to be at 90%

There will NEVER be another Colt Brennan and some cannot get over it.

There is a Bryant Moniz though and he’s shown he’ll develop and become better. Poise in the pocket, shows that “gun-slinger” mentality, quick release, accuracy, agile…

  198. whitey November 2, 2009 7:54 pm

kazz, taking a young man with no american fb experience and expecting him to by like ray guy is not very smart. you think that ray guy, his coach, appreciates that one of his students is getting wrong coaching. it took ray guy 4 yrs to become the best college punter, but one thing about him is that he always booms his punt.

EXACTLY the same as …. West. Kentucky, Washingon State, or NaMaSU. 😀 we’re at the same level of play as them. 😀

in fact, if I may suggest, have a full day meeting with Dasenbrock. Have him explain to a peep like Ralph and Whtey why the this and thats. After
you get past the half hour snow job, ask him specifically about changing the subjective interpretation requirements for entrance exams, how many people grad the subjective interpretations, who are they, how much are they paid, and then bring up Furlough Days. 😆

  203. appagom November 2, 2009 8:00 pm

Have season tickets for 31 years and I will admit, Dick Tomey had the most disciplined teams altho very conservative offensively. Bob Wagner, Von Appon, JJ, Mac coached teams lacked the discipline which include not lisitening to coaches, celevbrating, bone head plays, penalties, etc. This year such bone head plays include kickoffs – many returned out of endzone, one at sideline inside the 5 and out of bounds, 1 yard punt. I just cant stand seeing the opponents 3rd and 30, and they make the first down… time after time. Also have never seen warriors stop a fake punt. This year if u take out the BSU and FSU blowouts, its been competitive yet frustrating.

  204. Kazz November 2, 2009 8:01 pm

    Kona Girl,

    DEY U GO!!!!!!!

There is a mixture of what the angry fans deserve. Some have true passion and put in what they expect and some well, have a true passion to want to be right at no cost and don’t deserve a damn thing.

Hawaii has been guilty, like other places with a heavy fair-weather fan base, of a lot of people expecting more than what they themselves put into the program they supposedly support and I don’t strictly mean monetary donations and the purchasing of merchandise… Let’s talk about the attitude and emotional support.

It isn’t there for about 39% of them. Heck even more…

Some say, Hawaii wants winners, well… who the hell doesn’t?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?

We want a top caliber football program? Well, the people need to do their part and throw in their support whether that be $$$$$$$$ or emotional support.

Oh and buying more individual tickets for two games in 2006 and two games in 2007 don’t count… 🙄

  205. whitey November 2, 2009 8:01 pm

bhf2, actually, for uh admission, a half page with necessary requirements should be mailed to any prospective students and all program administrators be brought up to date with the requirements. notice, i said, half page cause that’s all is needed. requirements for after admission should be on another page. BUT, sometimes in this dang legal world, simple words are not acceptable to an institution of higher learning.

If a local HS football player spoke pidgin all his life, probably wrote in pidgin grammar, would he even bother with the UH admissions knowing that he had to write an essay that someone on the mainland will be grading and dictating whether he is capable of entering college at UH or would he apply to a college that did not require algebra II and the essay portion of the SAT.

kazz, some of us fans can only buy one or two tickets each year. the cost of the ticket is minor compared to buying air, hotel, and food. we luck out on trans because some of the tsaikos are willing to help us with that. so here on maui, i go to a place where they have ppv most of the time.

kazz, taking a young man with no american fb experience and expecting him to by like ray guy is not very smart. you think that ray guy, his coach, appreciates that one of his students is getting wrong coaching. it took ray guy 4 yrs to become the best college punter, but one thing about him is that he always booms his punt.

Oh no way. I’m just sticking to the Alex Dunnachie bandwagon because I do believe he, as an individual, can be a great punter.

I see what you’re getting at about “how” he’s being told to punt though and I’ve made mention of the fact and I think you and I and many other fans that don’t have their heads up their okole understand that he’s just being told what to do.

What I don’t get, nor do I care to get, is how some idiots are already saying that Dunnachie has no business punting at all and has zero talent.

That’s an ignorant comment, but considering the sources it’s not surprising at all.

BigHilo you should send an e mail to Chancellor Hinshaw in your regular pidgin explaining your complaint with the admissions policy and be straignt forward, ask her, can you understand my writing, does it make me unacceptable to UH admissions standards, well, for your information I, BigHilo, graduated from UH Law School.

  211. whitey November 2, 2009 8:09 pm

ralph, don’t want to make an issue of this, but whose fault is it if the students know only pidgin????? the funny thing about this is my first year on the mainland, all the haoles use to say to me “beg your pardon” when talking to them. at first i neva catch on, but eventually you learn, so is pidgin a hinderance to admittance to uh???????

  212. whitey November 2, 2009 8:12 pm

Oh and buying more individual tickets for two games in 2006 and two games in 2007 don’t count…

Oh and when I wrote this I don’t think I need to explain that it’s not directed at the regulars here. We’ve all come to know each other in some way so we know who’s legit about this thing we call UH athletics.

Moreso the idiots that I had to listen to in the stands on senior night in 2006 against Oregon State in which people, mostly in my age “bracket” (18-29) were screaming “What June Jones?!?!? NO SELLOUTS NEXT SEASON!!!!!!!”

My how stupid must have that punk felt in 2007, but then again when he and his cousins were busy trying to steal UH helmets during the BSU celebration I think any hope of this fool being a true UH supporter went out the window.

These are the cancers I speak of. These that make up the 39% don’t deserve a Top 25 program. Anyone that followed the team at least from 2005 would have enjoyed the 2006 season despite the tough loss to OSU, but then you have clueless idiots.

    Back to their parlay sheets!!!!!!!!!!

    Losers… 😆

Well, I think we can agree our original wager wasn’t based on negativity, just more on the fact that I thought Alexander would hold onto his #1 spot and you thought Shane Austin would win the #1 spot. We never took injuries into consideration.

Hmmm… I am interested in your proposal for a new positive wager… Lemme think about it unless you have a suggestion. Gonna grab some dinner now, be back in about 30 mins.

Whitey pidgin is what it is, it won’t change, and yes, it would be better if everyone spoke and wrote in standard English but it won’t happen here in Hawaii. Lots of foreigners with English as a second language are very successful in UH graduate school, especially in engineering, math and sciences. Most of the Ph.d. candidates in math and sciences are foreign born.

Good thing I didn’t walk over to practice this a.m. What time are they on the field tomorrow morning?

Lewis Walker has a lot of energy. He’s normally a really cheerful guy, but at practice last week, he was sorta subdued. Hope the team can get over these past few games and just concentrate on the next one.

    Derek Inouchi,

Please remind the team that they should remain on the field & sing the alma mater. Especially since this is Homecoming!

    Speaking of discpline,

What’s this nonsense about that Florida kid only getting half a game suspension for what can be construed as “assault”.

That crap was NOT on accident.

In Kazz’s world that kid would be shot in the face. How’d he like that?!?!?!?!?!?!

The Florida program just showed were they stand on that issue of sportsmanship and the NCAA and the SEC is showing they have no olos unless I’ve missed the news on them stepping in and showing Urban Meyer what REAL discipline is.

Hope that punk’s career ends badly. Karma sucks!!!!!!!

Imagine if that were a UH player?

    1) I’d be ashamed of him, for him, and for his family.
    2) We’d get trashed, the WAC would try to step in and the NCAA would make some sort of official statement condemming the incident and UH football.

The haves VERSUS the have-nots continue on a new LOW level…. 👿

Funny thing happened to me when I graduated from Infantry OCS at Fort Benning.

It suddenly dawned on me that every mistake I make will cost the lives of my men and their equipment. Therefore, I have the utmost respect of leaders who demand discipline.

Discipline in that line of work was very important for the lack thereof will/ can certainly bring distrastrous consequences. Discipline in any team sports can have the same impact execpt you don’t lose men and equipment; just the game.

Repetition of plays with discipline can bring great results. Dropping balls is a different story, but still includes discipline.

I’d like to see Dave give Cascioppo an opportunity to develop on the outside, Na Wahine will need the OH position held by Ferrell to contribute if UH expect to move through the regional.

About UH admissions — I think most of us, especially those who are alums, can agree that admissions can be frustrating. However, it isn’t like there are thousands of spots at UH that don’t get filled every year because admissions are too rigorous. UH (Manoa) has about as many students as it can handle, and in some cases, more. If you start adding students you also have to add faculty, classroom space, and even dorm space. No can at Manoa.

Easing admissions at Manoa is trying to solve a problem that doesn’t exist — except, perhaps, for athletics. But remember, recruited scholarship student athletes get preferential treatment as it is. If their paperwork and prereqs are in order they are essentially in. This is not the case for other students — they may have the grades and all the prereqs but only about 2/3 of qualified applicants will be accepted.

Someone mentioned UC Davis. It has about 10K more undergrads than UH and only about 50% of applicants get in so it is more selective.

  229. Ralph November 2, 2009 9:01 pm

Whitey and BigHilo, expat has a good objective view and it appears to be on target considering the number of students entering UH this year. Hawaii will have a three game win streak. We will kick USU, NMSU, and SJSU. Hawaii will then lose to Navy 45 to 42. Lose to Wisconsin 47 to 33. Everyone will be happy our offense with Moniz is finally scoring lots of points, and beating the point spread. 2010 will be Coach Mac’s make or break year. Smu will be in the Hawaii Bowl and Coach JJ will tell the fans in Hawaii they must back Mac, or football in Hawaii will really suffer.

  234. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 2, 2009 9:28 pm

UH wants to have the reputation as the Harvard of the Pacific. Only thing is they don’t back it up with nearly enough resources to do so. Any University of California school has difficult admissions requirements in comparison to the Cal State System. Off course UC Santa Barbara, Berkeley, and LA are probably the most difficult yet they get quality athletes to come on board. I wouldn’t know what the differences are aside from the very concrete requirements like SAT/ACT scores and average GPA etc.

I don’t consider myself smart at all but when I was in high school all my classmates thought that UH would accept us automatically considering how much high school cost for us and the amount of college prep work we did. I would think that at bigger schools that raw quantitative data like SAT/ACT, GPA, class rank etc is more important as it “weeds out” those who do not qualify. I do not know how much of the other things like admin statement, letters of rec. etc are taken into account if your scores on the quantitative parts of the admissions requirements are not even on the borderline .

East Caroline came a couple of years ago, played Boise and won. the Sheraton bowl people were happy with the turn out.

  241. Garret November 2, 2009 10:00 pm

    Ralph,

The Tsaiko who had a direct communication with Chancellor Hinshaw was told that Manoa faculty and administration decided to add the written portion of the SAT/ACT to UH’s admission requirements in 2005. UH-Manoa is well aware that other Universities do not require the writing portions of the SAT/ACT.

I personally think that the written portion of standardized tests does *not* indicate whether or not someone will do well in college. I do not understand using that written portion for admissions to UH for *any* student, not just athletes. I thought that admission requirements were to find the best students and make sure that the students would be able to be successful in the college program they are applying to. I do not think that the written portion accomplishes either of those admission goals.

UC-Davis is MUCH harder to get into than UH. I think that all the UC schools (UCLA, Berkeley, UC-San Diego, etc.) are harder to get into than UH, and they are much harder to get into than Cal State schools (SJSU, SDSU, Fresno State, etc.).

Only thing is we were Sugar Bowl-bound and the Hawaii fans were feelin good about football, especially the non-regular UH football fans.

Those were more happier times and when people are happy the wallets are a little looser.

  243. Garret November 2, 2009 10:10 pm

I really don’t like the way this newspaper describes how Central Arkansas played UH this season.

He said the Bears’ first Football Bowl Subdivision opponent was Louisiana Tech two years ago. Then, it was Tulsa last year. This year, the Bears have played the University of Hawaii and Western Kentucky, two teams on the lower end of the FBS food chain.

  244. bighilofan2 November 2, 2009 10:13 pm

    Garrett,

very good points about our admissions policy and how we got into this morass we now have regarding written portion of the entrance exam.

question is, how do we undo what is becoming a institutionalized fiasco?

  245. Garret November 2, 2009 10:13 pm

    Ralph,

I believe that BSU is a bigger draw than Nevada. They have been so good for so long that Hawaii fans would show up to watch them play…or to cheer against them. I don’t think that Nevada has the same appeal.

I know of many fans who bought Hawaii Bowl tickets, went to Aloha Stadium, entered the stadium, then left immediately without watching the game. They did that to support the local bowl, as they would be counted as part of the turnstile count. With the economy being different and the circumstances for UH not playing in the Hawaii Bowl being different, I would expect a much lower crowd for Nevada vs. East Carolina.

  246. whitey November 2, 2009 10:13 pm

Garret, correct me if i am wrong, but the UC schools are much harder because of the poplulation base and their out of state students are very limited for each school yr. One of my students who was a 4.0 and top student had to wait till the last minute to get into UC Davis because they were admitting only 200 out of state into the school that yr.

  247. whitey November 2, 2009 10:16 pm

ok kazz, came up with any suggestions???? like how many total tds will uh score in both navy and wisconsin game. the td count is only for uh and not the opposition.

  248. whitey November 2, 2009 10:19 pm

in the meantime, does anyone know what they were talking about the “high tech mouthpiece” being used by the no saints????

  249. Garret November 2, 2009 10:19 pm

    bighilofan2,

The written correspondence that the Tsaiko (I still haven’t said his name because I’m not sure if he wants to mention how hard he worked going up the chain at UH trying to work on this issue) received seemed to indicate that the minds of UH’s Administration *and* faculty would need to be changed for the policy to be changed. Frankly, convincing both groups to change their minds seems like a huge problem to me that would take an extremely long time to change if that would even be possible.

Given the budget cuts and the huge problems with facilities in need of maintenance, I do not think admission policies will be a priority of the administration and faculty right now. The list of facilities that need maintenance grows each year while the budget shrinks…tough problem in an economy like this.

  250. bighilofan2 November 2, 2009 10:22 pm

Look in Garrett’s post at how McCollum is talking about the UCA coach. reminded me of talking to a UCA coach the next morning in Waikiki. very very observant. head held high. two coaches, the night before, were somber, maybe distraught, but playing darts with some UCA team members and soundng football smart, very analytical. looking back, that was a very well coached team. now, reading Garrett’s post on Conque,
that man has a plan. he talks like he has a plan.

i think i’d better spend some time teaching coach how to speak fluent pidgeon. teach em the inflections of professional speaking. 😀

  251. OldDiver November 2, 2009 10:22 pm

SAT and ACT are indicators of nothing. Not success in college or success in life. That is a fact. They even tell you that when studying for the exams. This is a situation of ” We have to use some form of measurement even though it has no relevance to anything “.

  252. Garret November 2, 2009 10:24 pm

    whitey,

It is hard for in-state students to get into UC schools also! They just set their admission standards very high because they can only take so many students. California students need to achieve certain GPAs and SAT/ACT scores to even be eligible for UC schools…and even then they aren’t guaranteed to get into the preferred schools like Berkeley or UCLA. They could be forced to go to lesser-requested schools like Riverside…which is still a good school, but high school students would not prefer it over more attractive locations with better school reputations.

  253. whitey November 2, 2009 10:25 pm

    kazz, you there??????

  254. OldDiver November 2, 2009 10:26 pm

The problem with University Administrations is that they are made up of teachers. While they may be good teachers, common sense and business sense are not their strong points. Just saying from experience.

  255. Garret November 2, 2009 10:27 pm

    OldDiver,

I agree that the SAT/ACT scores don’t indicate college success. I am sad that pretty much everybody uses it. However, I believe that the written portions of the SAT/ACT tell even *less* about future college success and by their subjective nature cannot be graded uniformly to come up with an unbiased score. And most major colleges do not use that written portion because they do not believe in it…but UH does.

  256. bighilofan2 November 2, 2009 10:28 pm

    Garret,

you can appreciate the subtleties of the blunt instrument approach, the blunt trauma that will befall UH Administration if our football program skids, as many predict, into moreass. I’m not wishing it to happen, nor predicting it to happen, but we’re gonna need ballers.

and no need to worry what will happen to UH if people are admitted without written standards as a requirement.

my english is testament to what a homesteader can do with alotta luck 😀
    and sum udda stuffs. 😀

  257. whitey November 2, 2009 10:31 pm

Garret, i kinda know the UC educational system because of my experiences with swimmers, their family, and coaches in CA. I used to know some of the coaches at some of the major CA schools, but been out of coaching for quite some time. Their population base is a huge factor in giving major consideration to in state students. I don’t know if we have any schools in CA that cooperate with UH on tuition.

  258. whitey November 2, 2009 10:33 pm

    OldDiver,
you, Garret and whitey are banging on all cylinders. you guyz are absolutely right in identifying the problem.

and those writings, you’re right, they don’t mean anything. the proof is in the mainland schools. the proof is in our education system. going
    backwards backwards backwards.

true story. retired UHHChancellor Mortimer, had the pleasure of working with him on a case 5 years ago, when my english was betta. 😀 moral of the story: a writing will not measure effort, determination or juice.
our schools and teachers need to focus on developing effort, determination and inner drive in students. imho.

  261. OldDiver November 2, 2009 10:37 pm

    Garret,

I agree, it’s a pretty weird thing to require something that has even less relevance than something that has no relevance.

  263. Garret November 2, 2009 10:38 pm

You are correct that the UC schools give a preference for in-state students…just like the public Texas schools give a preference to in-state students, etc. The bar is set high for in-state students and set even higher for out-of-state students.

  271. Slugger November 3, 2009 12:21 am

Just conjecture…perhaps the UH administration/BOR included the written portion of the SAT/ACT to force students in Hawaii to work on improving their English grammar & vocabulary since pidgin is the common language used. Hidden agenda?

I think it’s due to rising enrollment, reduced facilities, creating the need to limit the number of students at UH = the additional written test to further limit accepted/qualified students.

    Good night! GO WARRIORS!!!

  272. iwonderwhytheyhateme November 3, 2009 1:03 am

I know I might get hate mail for this buuuut…

It is dirt cheap to get a college degree at UH…ESPECIALLY if you are a resident…..even as out-of-state its absurdly cheap. I know people still struggle to afford an education at these prices if you look at other Universities of comparable sizes you will see we are waaaay below the average.

Get what you pay for?….now thats for you guys to decide.

  273. Ralph November 3, 2009 1:10 am

Slugger and Expat offer good points, and on the other hand, as Garret and Old Diver pointed out, does the SAT really predict the students success in college, same with the GRE, medical and law school entry exams, maybe its best to set a higher HS core standard and guidelines for each core that is standardized for all states.

  274. Capitol -ist/WassupDoc November 3, 2009 1:39 am

November 2 (yesterday) was the deadline for filing applications to be named to one of three seats on the Board of Regents whose terms start on July 1, 2010. One position is for someone who lives in the City & County of Honolulu and one is for someone who resides in Maui County.
The third slot is for the student member.

All applications go to the Regents Candidate Advisory Council who run background checks, hold personal interviews and then select at least two candidates for each opening. That list then is sent to the Governor.

The Governor then selects someone from the list for each opening. The person must then be confirmed by the State Senate. Except in the case of someone dying or being forced to resign, all terms which start on July1 and end on June 30 run for four years.

Of the 15 current members, 14 are men. Perhaps we should start recruiting some qualified women to put in their applications for the next selection round.

Way back in the Early Stone Age, I applied to 54 universities; the only one I didn’t get into was my first choice. Back then, all schools had quotas for each state, for different religions & ethnicities, and, of course, majors. Several years later, I found out why I’d not been accepted – I was too young. From time to time, I wonder how my life might have turned out if I’d been accepted. .

    Off to bed

  275. wafan November 3, 2009 4:04 am

  276. wafan November 3, 2009 4:16 am

    Good discussions regarding admission standards.

The WA 4-year schools expect their students to have passed at least Algebra II. So now, the high school graduation requirement requires at least Algebra II for EVERY student.

What a great way to raise the drop-out rate!

  285. bighilofan2 November 3, 2009 5:37 am

reading nice feel good bio on Ikaika Malloe. Yale’s DC last year had the best record. musta had good recruits too. still, nice for Ikaika! goes to show, the stars gotta line up too in order for things to come together.

    one thing is certain:

A GREAT COACH IS A GREAT COMMUNICATOR.

PATERNO, papa BOWDEN, once upon a time they were great communicators. not the same when you’re working through assistants.
it would be like two chefs standing over a 8″ frying pan, each with a spatula. just don’t feel or look right.

  286. d1島 November 3, 2009 6:01 am

    Great Morning All!

Interesting read by “Ferd” about Bryant Moniz’ stats for his first 4 starts vs Colt Brennan and Timmy Chang. Seems to back up what we heard from Coach Ron at Na Koa yesterday.

    whitey,

Here’s the info on the mouthguard they mentioned on MNF last night

  287. d1島 November 3, 2009 6:03 am

    bhf2,

Time and place for pidgin was certainly problematic for Ikaika Malloe when he first got to New Haven….plenny “Hah/Pardon me?” moments! 😆

  288. d1島 November 3, 2009 6:04 am

    Have one good one gang!

    HiHo….

  289. whitey November 3, 2009 6:23 am

Good morning Tsaikos. d1, many thanks for the info. it is most interesting.

  290. whitey November 3, 2009 6:37 am

somehow things are looking more positive for the fb warriors.

  291. whitey November 3, 2009 6:39 am

playing ornellas is a good thing for the warriors cause it shows that there are other players on the team who are not regulars that can step up. Is it time to give them a chance?????

  292. whitey November 3, 2009 6:41 am

I like Coach Mc taking a strong stance on each player’s academic standing and the team monitoring the progress of all the players. The benefits outweigh the downside and each player has a chance to get a good education.

  293. letsgowarriors November 3, 2009 6:41 am

i didnt see much of the game, if ornellas has another good game, at least we can start to shy away from JC CBs. lewis walker and kawika ornellas are only freshman.

maybe get 1 JC CB and 1 JC FS.

  294. whitey November 3, 2009 6:42 am

bhf2, as you can see, the deadline for applying for the BOR was yesterday, according to wdoc. it will be interesting to see who the maui bor is.

  301. Buffoman November 3, 2009 6:52 am

I know that this blog does a lot of football talk but I wanted to inject a basketball observation. Somehow I think the UH and coach Nash are doing some work to not be put in the same situation as coach Mac. They (UH BB) gets ranked at the bottom. okay, we know where they stand and coach does not say, oh, we’re better than that in a loud voice, if he said anything. Now when you look at the papers, the biggest reports on the team is how who is hurt and cannot go 100%. Essentially telling all of us readers, “don’t expect much and here’s the reason.”

Pretty smart. If they do win a few more than they loose and not get ranked at the bottom at the end of the season, they all look real smart. If they don’t and come out where the prediction had them, no loss, they had all of the excuse bases covered….players were hurt.

keep the expectations low so as to not generate undue criticism. Unlike what we saw with football.

  302. Pomai November 3, 2009 7:09 am

There is nothing wrong with speaking or writing pigdin, the problem comes when you can’t turn it off or knowing when to turn it off and speak proper English. As wafan said there is a time &place for pidgen.

  303. Garret November 3, 2009 7:16 am

When I taught summer fun in Hauula, I spoke pidgin very well…and then at the end of the summer I went back to Texas for college and used regular English (except for using “y’all”). However, writing I always used regular English and I cannot imagine how hard it is to write in pidgin like bighilofan2 does. I never learned to write in pidgin, just speak, so it never affected by writing.

I agree with Pomai that the important thing is to be able to turn off the pidgin (or the southern accent, etc.) at the proper time.

  304. djmitcho November 3, 2009 7:27 am

Good Morning All! Hope everyone has a good day

  305. Pomai November 3, 2009 7:40 am

  306. Slugger November 3, 2009 7:41 am

Good morning, y’all! (That’s about all the ‘southern’ I can speak.)

Howdy, midnight & Barbara! Miss you guys!

The WA 4-year schools expect their students to have passed at least Algebra II. So now, the high school graduation requirement requires at least Algebra II for EVERY student.

wafan don’t get me started on this so early in the morning. put some blame on most of the post high school institutions for demanding all entering student taking and passing algebra 2 in high school in order for them to even apply to schools.

wafan, kk (and jason) – ok, I know I’m somewhat ( ❗ ) biased, but I’d like to see stats/probability as a required class in high school. In the “real” world, how often do you use anything higher than algebra 1? Stats, at least, has real world applications, like, you know, sports books 🙄

jm# many of the subjects required in hs is determined by the universities and colleges today. that is sad because lot of kids get eliminated because they are just not academically ready. our children should be given a chance to determine their course of action. but as everyone knows we do not live in a perfect world and a chosen few determines what must be.

  322. SteveM November 3, 2009 9:35 am

    Good morning everyone!

    > > >skip if not interested in Hawaii Cruising

SteveM aboard the M/V Pride of America

    Tuesday Nov. 3, 2009
    Port of Hilo

Around 10 hours in Hilo today and the ship excursions are going out in force to see the Kilauea volcano. We will be departing at 1800 and sailing south to pause where the lava is entering the sea (ETA 2145). Seen this on 4 previous cruises–it is an impressive sight at night as you see the red lava flowing down the hill and the white steam clouds where it enters the water.

Mom is thinking about anthuriums again. Last time in Hilo, she bought huge bunches and I had to call room service for a heavy champagne bucket to store them on our balcony for 3 days. No balcony this trip–but she’s not listenin’… 🙁 Going to try steer her toward Big Island Candies rather than Banyan Drive. 👿

At the cocktail party…got offered 3 Mai Tai’s…I met the shipboard Fitness instructor, who I mistook for the Spa sales manager and poster person. 0630 morning aerobics could certainly be compelling. chawan_cut comes to mind. She jokes her office and the fitness center is located directly over the buffet on deck 12 (it is).

    If this was a Tsai-ko Cruise…
For some, the Gold Rush Saloon is the launching point for the second Cruise Director sponsored “Pub Crawl” of the cruise. 5 drinks, 5 bars, $20. Sign up at 1730 and crawling starts at 1745. ID required.

Not just karaoke tonight in the Gold Rush Saloon, but a one night only Karaoke Stars Competition Sign up between 2200-2215.
The Cruise Director’s staff would probably disqualify Pride., d1 and (J)James if they heard them sing in previous nights–offering them automatic berths in the cruise Talent show if they have one (prize is usually a free cruise and an demo tape sent to NCL corporate for review as a possible entertainment contract offer).

50’s Rock and Roll party on the pool deck with live band at 2030. 50% off (Apple) Martini Happy Hour again in the deck 13 Lanai bar at the same time.

For the golfers: Sign-up for the Waikoloa Village golf course on Wednesday (Kona) for $99, which includes transportation from ship, lunch, etc.. You may begin signups for the Jack Nicklaus Kauai Lagoons Resort (Thur-Fri) for $140.99. I’m not a golfer but the logistics and distances in Kona make the shipboard tour attractive. Don’t know about Kauai but I’m sure Stretch, duffer and Liz could make golf arrangements.

  325. Pomai November 3, 2009 9:45 am

Techie saw that, but at a thousand bucks a pop, don’t think UH will be getting them soon. LOL

  326. Slugger November 3, 2009 9:51 am

Spotted at the end of practice: Greg Alexander, looking a bit thinner. Good to see him out there smiling. Billy Ray Stutzmann is wearing a boot on his R leg; didn’t he have an ankle sprain?

I was only at practice for the last 1/2 hr.. The backup QBs were getting reps. Running drills at the end of practice: Alex Green wearing his helmet & carrying a ball. Inoke was running with a ball and he’s faster than our young DBs.

I’m wet from being blessed by ua, but it’s so much nicer than being cold in snow. Ahhh…

#325 this isn’t the Shock Doc $50 brand … But just to let you know… 1K is the midpoint of investment … $800 – $2300 is the ticket that either the player or the program will look into. There are (2) certified dentist to do this in Hawaii and just watching if there is movement . . . one slow turtle for sure … if can can, if no can … next …

Hello! Does anyone have any questions for Bob Nash? He’s today’s WB guest… Not sure why there isn’t a new post today. Show starts at noon as far as I know…

  335. Kekoa November 3, 2009 11:11 am

Techie ~ Why such a high price tag?

There are hundreds of kids that play fb that need this kind of protection. Dental insurance is expensive. Is there a reasonable plan for parents or the athletic program to consider?

I would think that a shock absorber effect would also aid in cushioning concussions even just a little bit. What’s the official word from the industry Doc.

Why the injury bug in UH AD?and what steps are you taking to alleviate the situation?

    To ‘huh?’ on # 314 and # 320,

You seem to be all kinds of uninformed or just plain ignorant.

Dunnachie (barring injury) has an NFL career waiting for him when he graduates, much like McBriar did. This kid can boom the heck out of the ball, but I guess you’ve never attended a UH game (and watched pre-game practices) because you’re not a real fan. HUH?

Brashton isn’t over-hyped, he’s INJURED! When he played last year, he was terrific; one of the bright spots on the team.
