Shutter on travel roster

RENO — As insurance, Cayman Shutter was brought along as the fourth quarterback, behind Bryant Moniz, Brent Rausch and Shane Austin. Shutter will be used only in an emergency situation. The Warriors would like to redshirt the freshman; appearing in any game, even for one play, would jeopardize that.

* * * * *

The team practices at a local high school today. I think the temperature is in the 40s right now. It’s supposed to dip into the 30s. Robert Kekaula and Bobby Curran are wearing shorts. The Warriors will go about 90 minutes. Tomorrow will be a walk-through in the Wolf Pack’s stadium.

This might be the most awesome hotel. OK, aside from the casino — and I’m up $13.50, thanks to Wheel of Fortune slots — the rooms are spacious and gorgeous. Each room has a huge couch, long desk, fridge, microwave and flat-screen TV. There’s a second TV in the bathroom. And the shower is huge, too. Boise State and Fresno State can ditch the WAC. We need to keep Nevada.

* * * * *

The hotel. The Wednesday departures. The 2 a.m. flight after the game (following dinner at Circus-Circus). Let’s just say travel accommodations aren’t the Warriors’ problem.

Washington lost the 2nd Dreamliner line to S. Carolina. I think the last union strike and the state being so inflexible toward businesses is forcing Boeing and other major manufacturers to look elsewhere.

Expedia announced it will be moving a large component to Las Vegas earlier this week.

Union workers and government officials said they were shocked. What the heck did they expect? Higher pay, no/few tax breaks, more environmental rules/laws, higher minimum wage, higher taxes, strikes, . . .

Twice a day, mild asprin is the best blood thinner for altitude change.
Still coming from sea level to 4500 ft. can make the head spin.

About the same temperature as in Hawaii, but we have a front moving in from the northwest that is going to bring in rain, and 20mph winds. Our low tonight is forecasted to be 45.

Have been busy helping my ailing brother and his wife. Barbara and I have encountered unforeseen delays in the closing of our home.

BUT….. Life is wonderful and every day is an adventure. AND the Tsaikos, with their positive thoughts and deeds make it so!!!

    Bulla,

Safe travels in the cold north. In snow, just drive slow. A lot of people drive too fast for the road conditions. Hope you don’t hit any snow as you go. I’m sure you guys will have extra food, water, blankets in the ka’a. Flashlight?

    Go warriors!

  45. Slugger October 29, 2009 7:15 am

    Maverick,

I don’t think you’d want to thin your blood going up to altitude. I’ve lived at 7,000 ft. elevation, and what happens is your red blood cells increase to carry more oxygen in the blood. You don’t want to thin it.

  46. NYUH October 29, 2009 7:16 am

  47. Slugger October 29, 2009 7:20 am

    Ralph:

    October 28th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
Kazz if anything I’m going to volleyball, softball is early season fall conditioning, not much happening. Volleyball is season ending unless UH host a sub regional. Softball season starts in February. UH usually scrimmages with the local colleges, HPU, Chaminade, etc. and splits into green and white teams.

    Ralph,

Well I’m already going to the Wahine volleyball senior night next Sunday afternoon. I figured I’d pass on a butt-whuppin on Fresno State at home and see what I can from softball, even if it is most of the walk-ons going up against Chaminade.

Now, I may change my mind if FSU gives us some competition tonight.

Oh and I will be at the first Wahine basketball game next Wednesday. Still didn’t get my season tix yet… Hmmm… I gotta make a call to UH.

This reminds me of the movie Mr. Woodcock:

Compliments to the good Warrior fans that stand by the team 100%, including warriormojo.

In the skid the football team is experiencing it’s true that winning masks everything. And losing leaves one with a nakedness, especially the way Coach Mack and his team must be feeling as their plight is mounting. For, seemingly, every single thing the coach does is exposed and scrutinized further. And during this adversity he’s being stripped of his dignity, too, by the frustrated minority.

And where, now, we’re also seeing some fans, both partisans and nonpartisans, clashing and feuding as witnessed on other boards.

And yet, even though, I concede, I’m not a warm and fuzzy fan of the Warriors or Coach Mack I love the ones that are.

On one side of supporters/followers of the Warrior program are the fast charging scrutinizers, diggers and gloomers, like myself. And on the other side are the never wavering Warrior fan, which I truly respect because it’s their inextinguishable support that carries the team-traditionally, financially and loyally.

When it comes down to it-the never wavering fans are the anchors of the Warrior program.

    And they should be respected.

On another boards the topic was, “Who’s backing Coach Mack.” In the midst of the volleying warriormojo’s discernment centered around of why there is so much hate directed towards Coach Mack. And in the course of doing so he faced the wrath, lament and condensation of practically all of the posters there for holding his ground. In fact reading the thread it seemed like those posters were keeping a scorecard of the number of times warriormojo was knocked down. But you know something I admire people that have the courage in fighting and standing up for what they believe in, like warriormojo, especially in backing the team and the coach..

…warriormojos a Warrior for life-a strong backer of keeping the flame lit.

That in itself is respectful, commendably, and admirable as to how I see it.

    Reporters don’t root for teams.
They root for close games, because those are the easiest to write.
But a winning team also is good for reporters, because it means more interest, which means more trips, which means more … Johnny Rocket’s milkshakes.
Then again, when a team struggles, readership numbers spike.
Newspaper editors like good teams or bad teams, but not dull teams.

  83. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2009 11:14 am

The other thing is, it’s important to ask questions that come with answers.
The status of a coach is pointless. Nobody is getting fired, not after 21 games.
And asking about staff changes is pointless, too, because even if there were to be changes made — and there won’t be — nobody’s going to say anything publicly during the season.
(And, by the way, the questions have been asked privately, and the answer is “no” to both.)

  84. Pride. October 29, 2009 11:14 am

    Sounds like fun Don.

  85. Derek October 29, 2009 11:15 am

After Shane and the Phillies dispatch the Yankees this afternoon again, you can tune in at 5:30 on ESPNU 219 to watch the Wahine play Fresno St. Interesting games this weekend w/ Idaho hosting LaTech and Fresno hosting Utah St. It will show how far our team has fallen in the conference while teams like Idaho and Utah State have gotten a lot better.
I hate when people say “I’ve been coaching a long time….”. What is that mean? At the end of the day, it always come down to what have you done lately!

  86. Stephen Tsai October 29, 2009 11:18 am

Um, I really don’t think it’s important to talk about people being taken down.
I mean, these are word battles.
    Are we scoring adjectives landed?
I actually know both Mojo and Duffy, and I like ’em both, even when they irritate me. I’ve known Mojo for about 30 years. And Duffy used to be one of my inside guys.

    Nolo Contendere Quote:

“….posters (wsn) were keeping a scorecard of the number of times warriormojo was knocked down”.

    No need to count.
It went down officially as a TKO.
Mojo pleaded nolo and screamed “no mas” as he wept sheepishly and begged for Duff’s mercy.
The cyber crowd in attendance responded with an anonymous ‘thumbs down’ and threw trash at the vanquished wimp.
    Embarrassing…..Mojo needs your love.
    Give him hugs and XXXs.

Mmmmm…Johnny Rockets. Went to the one by the wharf in SF several years ago. Fun place; good burger.

Onion rings? Those were only popular a few years back when we didn’t like the French! The current Prez is OK now…and his wife! Oui oui! 😈

…speaking of which, TV in the bathroom, huh? Better to not let the world go by while one sits and “twiddles his thumbs” I guess! 😆

    ST,

If you want some good milkshakes, then you need to find a Ruby’s. They have some good milkshakes, and they have lots of choices. They also give you the silver cup that they mix the milkshake in, so it’s really two milkshakes for the price of one. Also, Sonic’s is pretty good.

Why does the “Leave a Reply” box say Mail instead of e-mail??

With so much coverage by the media on furloughs, will this affect the UH coaches and staff?

IIRC, UH football coaches will work for free on those days. Is this so?

  118. A-House October 29, 2009 1:28 pm

    ST:

I prefer Reno over Las Vegas – less crowd, friendlier people, nice weather, etc. But, getting there is a bitch!! Silver Legacy is our choice of hotel.

Need to go back at least once more to ride the “river boats” on Lake Tahoe and take the “tram ride” to the top of the hill near the Cal/Nev border. Hear that some Hawaii transplants have opened a restaurant in this area close to the water – some say food is ONO!!!

Anyone else having problems in getting to the Warrior Beat blog? I keep getting this “red, bold” message that I cannot connect.

Coach Mac stated that there is a total of 17 commits. As of today I seem to be only counting 16. Is there someone that has committed that we did not hear about yet? Just wondering.

It will be interesting to hear how IGNORANT those calling tonight’s Wahine match against Fresno State will sound when attempting to converse about our team aka the #3 team in the country.

One would think that the commentators tonight would have done their homework on the #3 team in the nation, but alas the #3 team in the country in this instance is a University of Hawaii program, so….. any such due respect from ESPN is already out of the question.

    But…

    We shall see.

Bottom of the 8th. Yankees leading 3-1. Phils had 2 man on w/ 1 out after Victorino got a single in the top of the 8th, but Utley grounded into a double play. When top of the 9th comes, Riveira pitching. He had pitched the 8th also.

  154. Derek October 29, 2009 5:19 pm

As usual, Riveira closes it out. 3-1 Yankees. On to Philly for Sat. A.J. Burnett was great today. Pedro pitched well also, but saddled w/ the loss.
One home run by Texeira. Victorino 1-4.

  155. duffer October 29, 2009 5:27 pm

    Off Topic,

Anyone stayed a the Waikiki Beachcomber with a review of the rooms?

  156. Ralph October 29, 2009 5:42 pm

I wonder if Mafua knows that she had middles, Hewitt and Kaufman not seeing any sets, and the Na wahines having difficulty digging and passing. On national TV, they got to blow Fresno out soon

  157. Ralph October 29, 2009 5:46 pm

Our Libero has got to cover more floor space, the center is always open and that’s the way the defense is set, knowing this, the libero got to be ready to make the quick move to cover the center court but it’s not happening.

  158. lava October 29, 2009 5:55 pm

How the heck is SMU going to a bowl game with its qb situation. Anyone thinking for a second they might see UH v. SMU in a bowl game this year is a ……………………………………………………..well, I don’t need to say it.

  164. chawan_cut October 29, 2009 6:29 pm

    these espnu volleyball announcers suck.

  165. Ralph October 29, 2009 6:29 pm

JM because our libero is struggling, passing is horrendous in game two. can’t run an offense if the passing is poor. Libero is in there for a reason, pass the ball or dig a solid hit and transition. We need to block better. But where is our middle attack, Mafua set to the left is too redundant, we need a change of pace.

  166. chawan_cut October 29, 2009 6:29 pm

how do you not know where the term six pack came from? you both played before.

Too many free balls to the other team. Most I have seen all season. This match going to five sets is unacceptable for the #3 team in the land.

Don’t care what Ken and Barbie are telling the TV audience, we’re giving FSU all the chances in the world.

  173. jm2375 October 29, 2009 7:14 pm

chawan – we’re spoiled, nobody does it better than Pops & McLachlin and Scott Robbs!

  174. expat October 29, 2009 7:15 pm

It is very interesting that anyone has SMU projected to go to a bowl game. Right now they are 3-4. They have five games remaining, all conference games. You would hope that they can beat Rice and Tulane, but Tulsa and Marshall will be tough and UTEP will not be a gimme. They have to win three be be 6-6. That 6-6 will also include a FCS win. At least some of those games will probably be with a new frosh QB starting as well.

    Doubtful

  175. Kazz (blkberry_storm) October 29, 2009 7:15 pm

Who the hell is “Kaiowa” on our team?

I think the smog and the smug levels in so cal are overwhelming nowadays its getting to the heads of this play by play idiot.

  176. Kazz ("Shoji" in Japanese means "1000".) October 29, 2009 7:29 pm

So it took that fool about four sets to pronounce “Wahine” correctly. Maybe if the game went to 5 sets he would of gotten “Ka’aihue” right… 🙄

Sheesh… I love it when ESPN proves me right.

    Idiots.

Oh and how was that stupid comment from “valley girl” tonight?

UH playes volleyball with that Hawaiian style, which is like another country in the way they do things…

Tonight, those two idiots just sat there in silence. It did nothing but down play the several long rallies that happened tonight.

The announcers did a very good job in being horrible and taking away from a match that was closer than it should have been.

Redshirting? Tachibana is a little light for his position. Even with his weight gain. Think the coaches want him to bulk up a little more.

  187. westsidesview October 29, 2009 9:06 pm

when they are in street clothes they are likely redshirting.
redshirts can also suit up but not play–that is up to the coaches. It depends on the unis available and reward policy for service on the scout team. It varies from coach to coach.

  188. westsidesview October 29, 2009 9:21 pm

McM’s theory to convert HS LBs to DE isnt working.
    jmo.
Most of these players are too light to begin with.
I believe Paipai will be an exception and fortunately he has the body type to take fast weight gains. Athletes vary according to body types, etc…..not all can pack it on. Alama-Francis was another who developed well into a D1A DE but he had good height for rapid expansion.
Ditto for M.Purcell. Although Ikaika and Purcell performed in a different D system where more weight mass was required.
Man, just go out and recruit the size.
These tweeners are huge gambles and if they dont pan out in 2-3 years it creates gaps in depth.

    Another vital factor–training program.
    It must be quality.

  189. XxFaithxX October 29, 2009 9:21 pm

    I have seen the light….

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO4tIrjBDkk

Man, Come on Mack, Cal, Miano, crap, any coach we have….lay it down for the team….make them FEEL inspired..

That is all that this team needs, it needs YOU to come clean and admit that you are not perfect, admit that you are human and have made mistakes, but…, BUT that is not all….from now on, you will, you HAVE to do what ever it takes to ensure that this team is WHOLE, that this TEAM will do what ever it takes to WIN and that you will too. Throw way all your old pre-conceived notions about players and coaches, let them know that you TRUST them and are willing to let them GROW…do not hold them back…but PUSH them further and harder…push YOURSELF to be better.

I know, I have started to hate on Mack, but deep down, I want him and the rest of the coaches to succeed because if they do, then so will my team…, my WARRIORS!

I hope that they can win in Reno this weekend and even though it might seem bleak, there is always a chance and lets wish them luck and courage in their next test. AL: li hing (mui) just means “traveling” and mui would mean “plum”.

No – no inclination to name number one son “li hing” – there is no number two, to the best of my knowledge.

Actually, on a serious tutorial note: I don’t know about other Asians, but the Chinese usually codify children’s names, so in theory, related Muis of a certain generation would usually have a common name in their names – clumsy stated but in my case, the Chinese name would be Yat Ming and my brother Yat Chung and if my father’s brothers had sons, their first part of the name would also be Yat (something). So all the related kids of that generation could be identified with the Yat in their names – of course you could have a ringer somewhere who didn’t follow the codification.

Duffer, the Beachcomber is close to the Sheraton Waikiki; I believe it’s across the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center – very close to International Marketplace. Yes, Hilton Hawaiian Village has fireworks each Friday evening at 7:45.

  193. madeinhawaii October 29, 2009 9:51 pm

The Beachcomber sits right on top of Macy’s in Waikiki. Duke’s Alley runs along the Ewa side of it. The international Market Place runs on the Ewa side of Duke’s.

Our basketball tickets have arrived – both men’s and women’s. Is there going to be a pre- or post-game gathering Friday evening or is the get-together a BIO?

Very interesting Stadium Authority meeting today. In addition to a detailed briefing on the various construction projects, a representative of the swap meet vendors asked the Authority to reconsider the games’ start time as well as the cancellation of the game day swap meets in the 2010 season. Also, there may be opportunities coming up over the next year or so for folks interested in the future of Aloha Stadium to express their concerns and suggestions. If you’re interested in any of these issues, please let me know.

A quick note on last Saturday’s HI-5 drive for the Hawaii High School Athletic Association: The 2009-2010 Fund Drive has reached its overall goal so that excess revenues are being carried over to the 2010-2011 school year – including the money raised last Saturday. Keith Amemiya is very interested in exploring additional community-based fundraisers so we’ll be meeting after the state football playoffs to plan something in late April.

Again, did anyone find a small black and red flashlight at the post-game T-Gate at Cabana B last Saturday? If so, please let me know.

OFF-SPORTS TOPIC: For those of you who are actively involved in a faith-based organization of any denomination which would like to get more information about providing support to homeless and at-risk families here on O`ahu, once again DrDoc and I will be making dinner for Family Promise clients – this time on Wednesday, November 11, at Nu`uanu Congregational Church.

All Tsaikos are invited to share the meal that evening and not only meet with the guests but also to talk to a FP staff members about getting your church, temple or synagogue involved.either as a host or support congregation.

Will have additional information posted on the Windward Ahupua`a Alliance website by Sunday evening.

duffer: I stayed at the Waikiki Beachcomber a few months ago. Rooms are nice. I think they were recently remodeled. Flat screen TV. Free wireless internet in the rooms so you can keep up with the WB. Bathroom was a bit small, but OK. The hotel itself is not in the resort category as the Sheraton Waikiki, but it’s nice. Parking is valet only.

    tom mui,

I’m the ringer in my family. My Dad insisted on naming me with part of my name belonging to his generation.

    Kazz,

Who was the libero tonight? My radio didn’t get the 1420 AM signal.

  198. Slugger October 29, 2009 11:37 pm

    Doc,

We’re all just meeting up at the game. Don’t even know where & who, ‘cept we know where C_C & Kazz are sitting.

Did you make it to the movie at the Shell tonight?

i used to be in favor of moving guys down 1 position to create more speed but im slowing moving away from it. you cant jsut grab a slower LB and move him to DE. he still needs the frame to put on the weight and these types of moves take time so that he doesnt lose that speed. although i do think the aaron brown move to become a full time OLB will work, i hope he is up for it.

we need help ASAP so recruit that way. a couple of tweener projects a year (Earvin Sione is a good one) are good, but we need guys ready to play ASAP.

I no longer live in Hawai`i, but my heart will always be rooted there as will be my Faith that the Warriors will prevail…be strong Warriors, be brave and and just get it done.

    AMEN. AMEN. AMEN.

    Good morning Tsaikos!

Happy Furlough Friday! No school til Monday! Not in my house.

No new post. Our blog host is either sleeping in or still in the casinos.

Slugger – libero was Liz Kaaihue as usual. Idiot announcer pronounced it “Kaiowa” or sumtin to dat effect.

Those announcers were really bad. What da heo was up with those remarks about Hawaii being like a foreign country in terms of volleyball? I kept waiting for her to actually explain what she meant by that, but neva happen.

Nice mention in the Long Beach Press-Telegram that a high school athlete from their area committed to the Warriors. I like what the opposing coach said about Taimatuia.

On defense, LBs T.J. Taimatuia and Adam Leutele are outstanding. Veach said this week Taimatuia committed to the University of Hawaii.

  218. Garret October 30, 2009 6:30 am

So, it sounds like that Miah Ostrowski says that when JJ left he had to give up his plans to play basketball and football at UH…either he just assumed that with zero conversations with his coaches (I find that unlikely), or he was told to focus on football.

“I wasn’t really thinking about football coming out of high school. But June said I could play both. When he left, I figured I had to stay with football.”
