Beau Yap commits to UH

By Stephen Tsai on January 31, 2010

Beau Yap, The Advertiser’s state Defensive Player of the Year, has accepted a football scholarship from the Warriors, according to his father, Boyd Yap. Yap, a rush end from Kamehameha Schools, had made a commitment to Baylor last week. He visited Oregon State this weekend. But after returning today, he changed his mind and pledged a commitment to the Warriors. Boyd Yap, once a Player of the Year, also played for UH in the early 1980s. * * * * […]

Cheerful dilemma

By Stephen Tsai on January 30, 2010

There is a nice problem developing at Warrior volleyball matches. The fans are starting to make noise. Last night, three showed up in costume. BowZos II? They heckled UC Irvine players, from their John Stockton-length shorts to opposite attacker Carson Clark’s membership in the Taylor Swift Fan Club. Thing is, the UH cheerleaders are leading their own cheers. And when the two sides are doing their thing at the same time, it can get confusing. Heckles and cheers aren’t always […]

Arizona is the hot spot

By Stephen Tsai on January 29, 2010

Add Colt Brennan to the growing list of Warrior-tied football players training in Arizona. The weather, easy travel access and numerous training facilities make Arizona an attractive workout area. Brennan, who has successfully recovered from three surgeries in the past 18 months, said he finally is healthy for the first time since September 2007. Brennan said he will continue training in Arizona for two months, then participate in the Washington Redskins’ two-month training program. He said he now weighs 216. […]

On the other hand …

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2010

Last week, a UH person told me that there was no way Mel deLaura, recently replaced as the head strength/conditioning coach for the Warrior football team, would go to SMU to reunite with June Jones. The person said SMU did not have any openings. But then last night, I got a call from Jones, who said that, in fact, he has two openings for strength/conditioning coaches. He said there are a bunch of procedures that need to be done first. […]

This shot doesn't count

By Stephen Tsai on January 27, 2010

The football team was told that because linebacker Brashton Satele had completed five years of eligibility and earned a degree in December, he would have to count as part of UH’s 2010 recruiting class if he were to successfully petition for a sixth year of football. Lee Ann Satele, like the rest of us, thought that was an odd rule. So she personally called the NCAA and was told that, no, her son would not count as one of the […]

Kamehameha highway

By Stephen Tsai on January 25, 2010

Two Kamehameha graduates —Kapono Rawlins-Crivello and Parker Paredes — have been added to the UH football team’s spring roster Rawlins-Crivello, who is the cousin of UH linebacker Mana Lolotai, played two years for Boise State. He moved back to Hawai‘i in 2008 to care for his mother, a cancer survivor. WAC rules reauired him to sit out two seasons. He will be eligible to play this fall. Paredess, who transferred from Southern Oregon, is the brother of UH linebacker Corey […]

Circle of (recruiting) life

By Stephen Tsai on January 24, 2010

A key member of UH’s 2010 recruiting class has four years of Division I-A experience and already has earned a bachelor’s degree. In a twist only the NCAA understands, middle linebacker Brashton Satele, who is appealing for an exemption to play as a sixth-year senior, must count as part of the 2010 recruiting class. He also will use one of the 25 initial scholarships the Warriors are allowed this year. Huh? Well, as we have been told, Satele has exhausted […]
